SPRUCE CREEK, FL - The 2009 Annual Spruce Creek Wings and Wheels event was an astounding success thanks to the efforts of the many volunteers and the leadership of Capt. Mike Kelly and his wife, Diane.

A vast collection of warbirds, antique and contemporary aircraft as well as diverse vehicles and motorcycles were on display and enjoyed by all attendees.

Kids of all ages were entertained by aerial skill displays by The Mavericks air show team as well as the Spruce Creek Gaggle. The always favorite spot landing contest was even more challenging this year thanks to the high winds brought by a weather front that moved in later in the day.

A formation of two Mustang P-51's based at Spruce Creek stole the show. The WWII ace fighters are in better than new condition thanks to the loving care of their owners, both long time residents at this world-famous fly-in community.

Children activities included a jumping house as well as diverse crafts. Food and drinks and business displays complemented another great day at Spruce Creek.

Spruce Creek WINGS & WHEELS to be held Saturday March 28th

SPRUCE CREEK, FL - Spruce Creek's most awaited event of the year, The ever popular Wings & Wheels Flying and Static Displays show will be held this Saturday March 28th. A large turnout of residents and friends and family are expected to meet at the famous "Tree" located in Windsock Park at the Spruce Creek Fly-in Community.

This year's attendance is expected to be a historical record. At the last Wings and Wheels, several thousand people were regaled with a fabulous display of formation flying along with static displays of aircraft, cars and motorcycles.

This year's event will include performances by the Spruce Creek Gaggle Flight and the Mavericks flight teams. In addition there will be a large static display of aircraft, many from WWII vintage, as well as collector cars and motorcycles. The all-volunteer event is planned and organized by the residents of the Spruce Creek Fly-In Community in Port Orange, Florida.

Additional activities include The “Spot Landing Contest”, a time-honored tradition where the local residents compare their skills to land their planes with accuracy and class. There will also be Business Displays, Food and Refreshments, 50/50 & Raffle Prizes. Special Events for Children of all ages. Funding for the activities is provided by the residents of Spruce Creek and donations from local businesses. SPRUCE CREEK, FL. - Local Spruce Creek Fly-In resident and NASCAR star, Mike Skinner has organized a two-day benefit event for this week, the third annual Toyota Skinner Round-up.

The star-studded event starts today with a "Hoe Down" from 6 to 11pm at the FanZone at Daytona International Speedway. Among the celebrities participating are jazz & blues superstar Stacy Mitchhart, NFL star Randy Moss, NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly, award-winning singer/songwriter Edwin McCain, daredevil Robby Knievel, Betty Jane France, and NASCAR drivers A. J. Allmendinger, Boris Said, Rick Crawford, Ron Hornaday and Steve Park.

Over the last two years, celebrities and the community have joined Mike in raising more than $250,000 for area charities. A live celebrity auction will also be featured with one-of-a-kind items donated by celebrities, drivers, and more. Plus, guests will have the opportunity to have pictures --- taken in Gatorade Victory Lane beside the Exide #5 Toyota Tundra. FAA Sued Over Plane Crashes

Washington, DC: You think that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the US Department of Transportation (DOT) are supposed to protect you from plane crashes so it may come as a surprise that both organizations are being sued for allegedly failing to act on safety recommendations. Yet that is exactly what has happened: two transportation safety organizations have been accused of allowing airplane crashes to occur because of their own inaction.

The National Air Disaster Alliance/Foundation (NADA) has filed the lawsuit, saying that the FAA and DOT have allowed plane crashes to occur by not following the recommendations made by the National Transportation Safety Board. Specifically, recommendations made on the NTSB's "Most Wanted Transportation Safety Improvements," which dealt with defects in plane design or flight operations, were allegedly ignored, resulting in plane crashes that could have been avoided, had the recommendations been followed.

The Alliance refers to such crashes as "déjà vu disasters." The phrase refers to plane crashes that are similar to those who have happened before and may have been prevented if the FAA had taken action on NTSB safety recommendations that were made 15 years ago. Such disasters include plane crashes involving plane icing—a possible cause of the February 12 crash that killed all 49 people on board and 1 man on the ground.

"As a direct result of the DOT and FAA refusal to adopt the safety recommendations of the NTSB, hundreds of lives have been needlessly lost," the lawsuit states. The lawsuit demands that the FAA adopt NTSB recommendations regarding icing and runway safety. Some of those recommendations are over 15 years old, while others are over 10 years old. The lawsuit does not seek monetary damages.

The NTSB has deemed the FAA's lack of action on its recommendations as "unacceptable." In a recent edition of its "Most Wanted Transportation Safety Improvements," the NTSB stated, "Before another accident or serious incident occurs, the FAA should evaluate all existing turbo propeller-driven airplanes in service using the new information available" regarding freezing rain. NADA notes that during the 15 years that the FAA has studied airplane icing there have been 3 turboprop plane crashes and 100 casualties.

Critics of the FAA and DOT say that they are too close to the airline industry to properly regulate and investigate it, even allowing people hired by airlines to participate in investigations. People who have lost loved ones in plane crashes say they back the lawsuit and it is time for the FAA to take passenger safety seriously.

The National Air Disaster Alliance/Foundation was founded by air crash survivors and family members of victims to raise the standard of safety for airplane passengers.

Spruce Creek Bonfire 2009: Record Attendance

SPRUCE CREEK - The annual Spruce Creek Fly-In Community Bonfire Event was held last night at "The Tree" in Windsock Park. This year's event saw a historic record attendance by residents and their friends at the world famous airpark community in Port Orange, Florida.

The bonfire was kicked off by a formation exhibition by members of the Spruce Creek Gaggle Flight Team which made several passes with trailing smoke for the enjoyment of the spectators. The Gaggle Flight Team is composed of residents of the Spruce Creek Fly-in which graciously donate their time and aircraft to complement many area events.

Residents braved the cold weather with temperatures dropping all the way down to 49° F, considered "cold" in the balmy North-East Florida area. All attending the event were treated with delicious country fried chicken and baked beans while socializing with fellow neighbors. In addition, there were several tables with desserts ranging from home made cookies to brownies and cakes. Soft drinks for the kids and beer kegs for the grey-haired kids were also served, all free of charge and sponsored by the Community Relations Committee of the Spruce Creek Property Owners Association.

The bonfire at the center of the event brought warmth and a festive atmosphere. There was also a smaller bonfire where the children's roasted marshmallows. The Spruce Creek Children's and Recreation Committee handed out glowing bracelets much to the delight of the little ones.

Held every year, the Spruce Creek Bonfire is one of several loved and widely attended traditions organized by the residents of the Spruce Creek Fly-in. Spruce Creek Toy Parade 2008

SPRUCE CREEK, FL - The 2008 Annual Toy Parade was held in Spruce Creek yesterday March 13th, 2008. Over a thousand people were in attendance at this, one of the most cherished celebrations of the year at the world-famous fly-in community.

The Toy Parade is organized by the Spruce Creek Flying Club and many resident volunteers and is unique in the world as it is held by and for the residents of the Spruce Creek Fly-In. In addition to a fantastic air show led by the Spruce Creek Gaggle Team. Kids of all ages were entertained by aerial skill displays by The Mavericks air show team.

The parade was composed of a vast collection of Christmas-themed warbirds, antique and contemporary aircraft as well as diverse vehicles and motorcycles. The always favorite "Spruce Creek Drill Team" and the "Creekettes" performed their coordinated skill displays while marching to the music.

The Spruce Creek Children and Recreation Committee has organized this year's Fall Carnival for the children of Spruce Creek to be held this Saturday October 25th, 2008 from noon to 4:00 pm at the Tree in Windsock Park.

This year, the popular carnival-style extravaganza will include the favorites from years past: The Rock Wall, Bounce Houses, Bungee-Jump and the always popular Inflatable Obstacle Course. The traditional hay ride is a must for all. Also there will be Crafts, Face Painting, Clowns, Magicians, Pumpkin Decoration and a few other events and activities to ensure entertainment for all. Spruce Creek children and families of all ages are invited to participate.

As always, hot dogs and refreshments will be available.

Embry-Riddle launches first Ph.D. in Aviation in the nation

Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University will offer two new doctoral degree programs in 2009, including the first Ph.D. in Aviation in the U.S.

The new Ph.D. in Aviation program will allow students to pursue interests in aviation in a multidisciplinary environment. The flexible, online program will require one week a year on campus and will take about three years to complete.

Embry-Riddle is also offering a new Ph.D. program in Engineering Physics at the Daytona Beach Campus, which covers topics in space physics, upper atmospheric physics, remote sensing, spacecraft instrumentation, spacecraft systems engineering, and control of aerospace systems.

"These doctoral programs are designed to give both working professionals and research professionals the opportunity to pursue their intellectual interests through rigorous programs and meet their professional goals to prepare them to serve as our aviation, science, and engineering technology leaders of tomorrow," said Dr. John P. Johnson, Embry-Riddle president.

Spruce Creek Back to School Party to be held Saturday September 13th

The Spruce Creek Children and Recreation Committee has organized this year's Back to School Party for the children of Spruce Creek to be held this Saturday September 13 at the Spruce Creek Country Club. The event will start at 5:30pm and is scheduled to go on until 9:00 pm.

This time, the popular end-of-summer party will have a Caribbean theme complete with DJ, dancing, swimming, games, slide and bounce house, prizes and children of all ages are invited to participate.

As always, hot dogs and refreshments will be available. Food provided by the club.

The Spruce Creek Journal has partnered with Stormpulse to provide an incredible interactive storm tracking map. The beautifully-rendered map shows the current and projected tracks of all active named storms in the Atlantic basin. Additional features allow the historical display of storm paths from as far back as 1851. Users can click on the map to zoom and pan for a better view. The storm information box shows wind speed and other parameters from the National Weather Service for any point in the storm track.

Embry-Riddle Keeps Top Spot in U.S. News & World Report’s Best College Rankings

DAYTONA BEACH -- Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University has once again earned the top ranking in the annual “America’s Best Colleges” guide published by U.S. News & World Report magazine.

In the specialty category of “Aerospace/Aeronautical/Astronautical Engineering Programs” at schools where the highest degree is a master’s, Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus took first place, followed by the U.S. Air Force Academy in second, and Embry-Riddle’s Prescott, Ariz., campus in third.

The university, which has one of the largest aerospace engineering programs in the nation, has won the top spot every year since the category was introduced in 2001.

“For the ninth year in a row, U.S. News has honored Embry-Riddle for outstanding achievement in ‘Aerospace Engineering’ and in the ‘overall Undergraduate Engineering’ category,” said Dr. John P. Johnson, the university’s president. “We are extremely proud of this accomplishment and think it is a reflection of Embry-Riddle’s quality faculty, staff, and students in our engineering departments and throughout the university."

In the overall category of “Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs” where the highest degree is a master’s, both campuses rank in the top 20. Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus is ranked number nine, tied with Villanova University. Embry-Riddle’s Prescott campus is number 20, tied with Baylor University, Bradley University, Santa Clara University, and Valparaiso University.

Embry-Riddle’s Daytona Beach campus is 13th in the overall category of “Best Universities – Master’s” (South Region).

The rankings for the “Best University” category are based on reputation (25%), graduation and retention rates (25%), faculty resources (20%), student selectivity (15%), financial resources (10%), and alumni giving rate (5%). Runway Incursions can ruin your day

Here is a good example of how situational awareness avoided a possible disaster. The First Officer is a female who was recently hired with extremely low experience. The Captain has failed several check rides. The female tower controller gets confused and doesn't realize what's happening. The only smart guy in the bunch is the U.S. Air Pilot who is waiting for takeoff. Listen to what he decides to do!

Spruce Creek Country Club extends no-fee promotion

Raw Video: Plane Takes Off From I-95 After Emergency Landing

After landing in the median of Interstate 95 in Volusia County, a small plane took off again Tuesday afternoon.

It happened near the U.S. Highway 1 exit in Ormond Beach.Authorities said the emergency landing brought traffic in both directions to a stop for a short time.

During a flight from Ormond Beach to Flagler beach, a cylinder seized up and the engine failed, forcing the landing.

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said two people were aboard the plane at the time of the landing, an instructor and a student pilot. Initial reports said only the pilot was on board. Neither passenger was injured.

The plane’s owner, Adrian Thompson, was called to the scene to make repairs. It took three hours to repair the single-engine Cessna 150.

Thompson told police he needed 600 feet of highway to get up to speed to take off so troopers ensured he had enough highway space to get off the ground.

"We decided to go ahead and allow him to make repairs, we got the clearance from the FAA to do it," Florida Highway Patrol trooper Wooster Woodward said. "He’ll take off from here. It’ll be much more expeditious to do that. To dismantle the aircraft would have taken over 8 hours and it would have caused a major traffic distraction. This way, we’ll be in and out in less than three."

Spruce Creek 2008 Children Olympic Summer Bash to be held June 21

SPRUCE CREEK - The Spruce Creek Children and Recreation Committee has organized this year's Big Summer Bash event for the children of Spruce Creek to be held on Saturday, June 21 at the Spruce Creek Fly-in children's playground. The event will start at 10:00 am and is scheduled to go on until 1:00 pm.

The event's theme for this year is the Olympics, and activities planned include a variety of games for kids of all ages to compete in. From sac races to egg relays and tug-of-war, to jousting matches and a bungee run. There will also be water games to cool off in two water slides. So bring your swim suits and towels!

As always, hot dogs and refreshments will be available.

The Summer Bash is one of the many children activities organized each year by the Spruce Creek Children's Recreation Committee. The Committee is managed by volunteer residents of the Spruce Creek Fly-in. The mission of the Committee is to provide safe, fun and healthy activities and opportunities for the children and families of the Spruce Creek Fly-in community.

Funding for the activities is provided by the residents of Spruce Creek and donations from local businesses. Other activities held throughout the year include the Annual Easter Egg Hunt, Family Movie Night, and Breakfast with Santa. Additional children's events are organized in conjunction with the famous Spruce Creek festivals: Wings and Wheels, the Annual Bonfire, and the Toy Parade.

Please bring your aluminum cans and box tops to support the Committee's S.O.S. campaign to help Volusia County Schools.

Collect as many aluminum cans as you can. For example, rather than recycle your cans at home, put them in a trash bag or box and bring them on the 21st. Be resourceful; collect cans at parties or your workplace. Encourage your kids to be creative because there are aluminum cans everywhere. Each pound of aluminum is worth approximately 50 cents.

Collect as many Box Top coupons as you can. Look on products you already purchase everyday like cereal boxes and paper products and cut off the Box Top. Keep them in a safe place and bring them on the 21st. Again, be creative; get your neighbors and friends involved. Each Box Top is worth 10 cents for the schools. We all have valuable money for our schools already sitting in our cupboards. Whatever we collect on the 21st will be donated back to the schools. Spruce Creek High School: Top 100 in the Nation ! ... again

SPRUCE CREEK - Newsweek Magazine has again ranked Spruce Creek High School in the top 100 schools in the nation. The prestigious ranking is based on the number of International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement and Cambridge exams schools give compared to their numbers of graduates. This is the fifth year the Spruce Creek school has made the list. By scoring high on those exams, students can earn college credit for courses taken in high school.

All schools that made the top 100 are in the top 5 percent of public schools. The top 100 schools are selected out of the top 1,300 top U.S. high schools. The selection criteria also rates the schools on a "Challenge Index" reflecting research showing a strong correlation between the rigor of a student's high school courses to success in college. For 2008, Spruce Creek High School ranked 92 on the list.

Members can post and share in discussions, create personal blogs, create and join specialty groups, post events, classifieds, photographs and videos, ask open questions to the membership and much more. Road Closure at Spruce Creek

The Spruce Creek Public Works will be commencing work on a drainage and road construction project on Seclusion Drive. Starting on 4/7/2008, Seclusion Drive from Cessna Blvd. to Country Club Drive will be closed for approximately 8 weeks. Access to Cessna Blvd. will be via a detour through Country Club Drive to Cochran Court.

A temporary road will be constructed from Cochran Ct. to Taxiway Uniform continuing to Taxiways Whiskey and Victor. Detour signs will be posted & POA Security Officers will be on duty as necessary to assist with traffic control.
