SPS Movie Night

SPS will be hosting the first movie night of this academic year. We will be watching Primer, an independent film that involves time travel and all the drama and moral dilemmas that go along with it. This is planned to occur on Friday, Nov. 18th from 7-9pm in PSCB 210. Should anything go awry, I will send out another e-mail through Eileen. We will begin the movie around 7:20 after everyone's had their fill of the pizza and refreshments that SPS will be providing. If you would like to take a break from all that studying that I'm sure you're all doing, feel free to come and join us.

Event: Smashing Pumpkins

So for those of you who haven't heard and are keeping tabs on this site, Smashing Pumpkins is the name of the event for the pumpkin drop we are planning to have. I plan to freeze a bunch of pumpkins with liquid nitrogen and drop them off the 4th and/or 5th floor of the FRH stairwell facing the fountain. "Why?" You might ask. My response, "Because I think it's cool... Pun intended." Furthermore, I think it would be a short bit of entertainment that others can watch and promote SPS. The event is scheduled for 6:15pm Monday Oct. 31st. I will confirm whether or not this event goes through this Friday, Oct. 28th on this website, and also send out an invite to everyone in the physics department.

Second SPS Meeting

The Society of Physics Students will be having our second meeting at the end of this week. I know that I said that I wanted to have a meeting biweekly, but rainstorm -> sickness = bad times. But I still want to have a meeting, so details are as follows:
Date: Friday, October 21st
Start Time: 1pm
End Time: 2pm(-ish)
Location: FRH 2137, the SPS club room
This will be what I like to call a "mini-meeting". I'll bring cookies and I'll update members on the status of our upcoming event, called "Smashing Pumpkins"(as an aside, I enjoy being misleading particularly when it comes to naming events). Anyways, I'd also like to schedule movie nights over the upcoming weeks, but only know a few physics-y movies, so I'd like to open discussion on that topic. There is another topic that I'll bring up during the meeting that I'd like to keep secret until then (at least, I still think it's a secret).
I hope to see your faces then.

First Meeting of the School Year

VISITOR NIGHT AT THE UCI OBSERVATORY

Date: Saturday, March 5
Time: 7-9 pm
Location: The Observatory at the University of
California, Irvine

Come to the Observatory and use our telescopes to see the star-forming Orion Nebulae and numerous globular and open star clusters. Learn how to use a night sky map to locate your favorite constellations. Listen to a lecture entitled "When Galaxies Collide" by Dr. Elizabeth Barton and learn about how galaxy collisions trigger bursts of star formation and what insights the newly-proposed thirty meter telescope may hold for galaxy evolution.

Visitor Nights are open to the public so feel free to forward this message along to friends and neighbors who might be interested. Visitor Nights are free of charge, although we ask for a $5 donation per family to defray the costs, and parking on campus costs $2/hr or a maximum of $8. No reservations are required. They are fun for the entire family - children, teens, parents and grandparents. Please remember to dress warmly and bring along flashlights. We heartily encourage amateur astronomers to bring along their own telescopes to share with our visitors.

Winter break may be over, but the fun shouldn't stop there. Come take a mini break with a FREE pizza party and the Society of Physics Students this Friday, the 21st, at 1:00pm in FRH 2111.

We hope to go over the SPS project and fun, upcoming events. Anyone want to see a taping of The Big Bang Theory? Who's interested in getting Mathematica 8 for the SPS computers? Let's discuss.

SPS Camping Trip

Hey Everyone!

The Society of Physics Students at UC Irvine is planning a camping trip for next Saturday, May 15. We will be joining the Palomar Observatory's 'Explore the Stars' event for stargazing, potlucking and camping at the Palomar Observatory campground. Physics undergraduates, graduates, faculty and other members of the Physics and Astronomy department are invited to come. The event is free for UCI attendees!

Explore the Stars is a collaboration between amateur astronomers from across Southern California and the Forest Service, with support from Palomar Observatory. One night a month from spring through fall of each year, Observatory Campground on Palomar Mt. becomes a true dark site, and, after a talk on an astronomy-related topic, campers from all over the mountain and other visitors have a chance to see some of the sights of the night sky through the telescopes of the ETS volunteers.

If you are interested, please fill out the registration sheet soon so we can coordinate carpooling & camping gear. Registration is free! Any questions should be directed to Alexandre Colavin (acolavin@uci.edu)

Hey Everyone! Society of Physics Students is having another movie night, this time around we'll be watching The Last Starfighter. Come join us for a night of fun, and as usual we'll provide pizza and drinks, for free!

Spring Series Camping Trip

We're planning a star-gazing camping trip for this quarter, on the night of May 15th!

One night a month from spring through fall of each year, Observatory Campground on Palomar Mt. becomes a true dark site, and, after a talk on an astronomy-related topic, campers from all over the mountain and other visitors have a chance to see some of the sights of the night sky through the telescopes of the ETS volunteers. Join SPS on a camping trip.

This event will be potluck based, so please bring food to share with other SPS and ETS members.
