Jake in action against Fulham on the last day of the season

Posted 28 May 2012 10:00am
After a breakthrough season, Jake Livermore has spoken about how it feels to play for the club he loves.
The midfielder made 38 appearances across all four of the competitions we were involved in, cementing his place in the first team squad.
Born in Enfield, Livermore has been with us since his schooldays. He grew up in a Spurs-supporting household and although Arsenal were among those clubs reported to be interested in adding him to their Academy, there was only one direction for him.
“It had to be Tottenham, it couldn’t have been anywhere else – and, thankfully, Spurs also wanted me,” he says. “I’m proud to be a Spurs player and when I was 16 and told that they would take me on full-time, I could not have been happier.
“I was also fortunate that all the family love Spurs, including my father and uncle who were particularly keen. And my mother Heather was a major influence in those early days when she would just tell me to believe, make it happen and be worthy of it when it did.
“So I shared my dream with all of them and their delight in seeing me get this far makes it even better for me. I’ve always been a confident type of person and I agree that that’s certainly helped me along the way but you still need people behind you and I’m glad that I was able to justify their belief.
“When you’re growing up you have so many friends and players you’re playing with who don’t make it and it’s difficult because you sometimes think that you’ll be one of them. But I owe a lot to my family to keeping me going and keeping me strong.”

]]>The Spurs Academy finished as runners-up in the Volksbank Cup in Germany after a penalty shootout loss in the final to Mexican side, Club America.
Alex Inglethorpe’s team had earlier put in an outstanding performance to beat Werder Bremen 3-0 in the semi-finals with goals from Bentaleb, Zapata-Caicedo and Ward ensuring we had a chance to win the tournament.
But despite dominating possession and creating the majority of chances in the final, the lads were unable to breakdown a stubborn Club America team.
With the match finishing 0-0, it was left to the lottery of spot-kicks to decide the fixture and it was the excellent Alex Pritchard who was unfortunate enough to miss the decisive kick, allowing the Mexican side to win the shootout 4-3.
“It was an awful way to end it but there are lots of positives to take from the tournament,” Inglethorpe told tottenhamhotspur.com after the final.
“I thought we were outstanding against Werder Bremen. It was a very complete performance. We controlled the game, with and without the ball, and I thought we were standout in how we approached the game.
“The result in the final is hard to take because I think we were the better team. Club America were good but they backed right off us; we had all the ball, all the initiative and a couple of chances but we couldn’t score.”
After playing five matches in three days, Inglethorpe stressed the positives of competing so strongly in such a high quality competition.
“The most pleasing thing about the tournament is that, whilst we’ve finished second, the best players in the tournament were ours.
“Nabil Bentaleb, Jack Bartram, Kevin Stewart, Alex Pritchard and Ryan Fredericks were all very, very good. Nabil in particular looked like a complete midfield player.
“It’s difficult for all of us [to accept a loss on penalties], because everybody has put so much into it. We have to console ourselves with the fact that I believe we had the best players in the competition.
“The reason we go to these tournaments is because the Premier League is an international league. We’ve played a Mexican side, two German sides, a Swiss side and a Mexican side. We know that we can compete against some of the best young players in the world.”
TEAM VS WERDER BREMEN: Lawrence, A.McQueen, Ball, Stewart, Barthram (Gardiner 46), Bentaleb (Smith 44), Gomelt, Munns, McEvoy (W-Lassen 36), Ward, Z-Caicedo (Pritchard 41)
Goals: Bentaleb 8, Z-Caicedo 9, Ward 33
TEAM VS CLUB AMERICA: Miles, Barthram, Ball, Stewart, Smith, Bentaleb, Gomelt, Munns, Pritchard, Fredericks (McEvoy 47), Zapata-Caicedo

Scott Parker, Rafa van der Vaart and Sandro all played for their countries on Saturday in the latest round of international friendlies.
Scott played 56 minutes for Roy Hodgson’s team as England secured a 1-0 win in Norway courtesy of an Ashley Young goal early in the game.
Bulgaria inflicted a surprise 2-1 defeat on the Netherlands in Amsterdam, with Rafa playing 64 minutes of the match. Robin Van Persie gave the home side the lead before van der Vaart conceded a penalty for handball which was duly scored, and the Bulgarians scored again in the dying seconds to secure victory.
In Germany, Sandro played 85 minutes of Brazil’s 3-1 win over Denmark with the midfielder putting in a typically energetic shift.

Niko played the second half of Croatia’s win over Estonia

With Euro 2012 approaching fast, Croatia got their preparations off to a perfect start with a 3-1 win over Estonia.
Vedran Corluka scored the opening goal for Slaven Bilic’s team with a volley from close range, and Niko Kranjcar, playing as a second half substitute, initiated the move which led to Ognjen Vukojevic sealing victory with Croatia’s third goal.
Back in England, Harry Kane played 89 minutes as England U19s got their European Championship qualifying campaign off to an impressive start with a 5-0 win over Slovenia at Deepdale.
The forward caused Slovenia all sorts of problems with his movement and probing runs in the first half, with two players cautioned for cynical fouls on the Spurs player.

The Spurs Academy progressed to the semi-finals of the Volksbank Cup with victories over Hannover 96 and RCD Mallorca on Saturday.
A 3-0 victory over Hannover thanks to goals from Munns, Bentaleb and Fredericks, followed by a 1-0 win against Mallorca – who only needed a draw to progress – ensured we progress to face Werder Bremen in the semi-finals.
A loss to Grasshopper Zurich on Friday meant that only two wins would guarantee that we would make iit through to the latter stages of the tournament, and coach Alex Inglethorpe was delighted with the performances.
“I thought we were outstanding against Hannover. It had style and we were very clinical in winning 3-0. We were delighted with how the game went. That meant that we still had a tough game against Mallorca as we needed to win, and we managed to do that in the second to last minute of normal time,” Alex told tottenhamhotspur.com after the match.
“It was really pleasing and we deserved it. We’ve been the most attacking team, and I think we’ve been the most adventurous, so I’m really pleased we’re in the semi-final.
“It was a collective effort; everybody has made a start, everybody has contributed, and I think that the most pleasing aspect was that as good as the first performance was against Zurich, I thought the displays today were very good in a different way.
“Weh had to deal with Mallorca who knew that they only needed a draw and so were slow and wasted time, but we kept our cool and didn’t get frustrated at all and eventually we got out reward.”
A semi-final against Werder Bremen is next up on Sunday and Inglethorpe is confident of victory.
“If we can do what we know is right, and play in the way and style in which we’re capable of, then I’ve got high hopes for us. I think it’s been an outstanding achievement up to now.”
TEAM VS HANNOVER: Lawrence; Barthram; Ball; Stewart; Smith; Bentaleb; Gomelt; Pritchard; Fredericks; Munns (Gardiner 50); Z-Caicedo (Ward 44)
Goals: Munns 19, Bentaleb 41, Fredericks 50+2
TEAM VS MALLORCA: Miles ; Gardiner (Munns 28) ; Ball; Stewart; Barthram; Bentaleb; Gomelt; Lameiras (Z-Caicedo 26); W-Lassen (A.McQueen 44); Pritchard; McEvoy
Goal: A.McQueen 48min

]]>Spurs Academy got their Volksbank Cup campaign off to a tough start with a 2-4 loss to Grasshopper Zurich in Stemwede, Germany.
In the first of three 50-minute group matches in the eight-team tournament for Under-19s, the lads found themselves 0-3 down after only sixteen minutes.
Nabil Bentalab pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after good work from Ryan Fredericks soon after half-time, only for Alex Inglethorpe’s team to go 4-1 down just two minutes later.
Grant Ward scored late on after superb hold-up play from Victor Zapata-Caicedo to raise hopes of a comeback, but it wasn’t to be.
“We started off really brightly and had a good chance to score in the first couple of minutes, and then slightly against the run of play Grasshopper Zurich scored a really good counter-attacking goal,” Inglethorpe said after the match.
“From then on, we were the architects of our own downfall because we chased the game a little bit early. We were too gung-ho too soon, and before we knew it, we were 3-0 down at half-time.
“I thought we played a good game in the second half, we were a little bit more considered in what we did, and I saw lots of intensity. Although we came out on the wrong end of it, I thought Ryan Fredericks was exceptional, Alex Pritchard came into it really well and there are certainly some positives to take from the match.
“I thought it was a very good game of youth football in the end.”
We face Germany’s Hannover 96 and RDC Mallorca of Spain in our remaining group stage matches on Saturday.
Spurs team: Miles, Waller-Lassen, Ball (Z-Caicedo 28), Stewart, Barthram, A.McQueen, Bentaleb, Munns, Fredericks (Ward 35), McEvoy, Pritchard (Lameiras 46)
Goals For: Bentaleb 31, Ward 46

Brad kept 14 clean sheets in the Premier League this season.

Brad Friedel spoke of his pride after recording a 25-year best 14 clean sheets in the league last season – but, typically, was quick to divert the praise to the team around him.
The goalkeeper was an ever-present in the Premier League and made it 14 clean sheets with an excellent display against Fulham on the final day of the season.
That is the best clean sheet total since David Pleat’s fine team of 1986-87.
Ray Clemence kept 19 clean sheets as we finished third in the old First Division, lost in the final of the FA Cup and semi-finals of the League Cup.
“A good defensive record is always the base for a successful team,” said Brad, who stretched his record of consecutive starts in the Premier League to 304 last season.
“Clean sheets are a cumulative effort, it’s not just the work of one person.
“In some games, like Blackburn, I kept a clean sheet without having to touch the ball.
“As a goalkeeper, obviously you always go out and try not to concede goals so if you keep a clean sheet, you feel like you’ve done your job.
“But I would much rather win the game 2-1 and get the three points than draw 0-0 and just get one.
“Every goalkeeper is pleased when they record a clean sheet. I had no idea that 14 was the best at the club for 25 years but what I will say is that I hope we can better it next season.”
