The Basics of Fdisk:
Primary partitions are the only one that are bootable. They're always the C: drive when active. Normally you can only have one (More with some special tricks etc.) Extended partitions are needed when you want more than one partition. You can only have ONE Extended partition. Logical Drives come into the Extended partition. They are handy since you know that you can only have one Primary and one Extended so you can get more than only two partitions. They would be your D:, E:, etc. drives.

First you need to reboot your system with the Boot Disk inserted.

1.At the A: prompt start "FDISK."

2.If asked to use Large Disc support say Yes.

3.The first screen looks like this:

Create Dos Partition or Logical Drive
Set Active Partition
Delete Partitions or Logical DOS Drives
Display Partition Information
Change current fixed drive. (In case you have two or more Hard Drivess)
So, to prepare you hopefully did a backup from your data. You did, didn't you ?!

4.Next we need to remove the existing partitions. So go to 3.

5.Next screen like this:

Delete Primary DOS
Delete Extended DOS
Delete Logical Drives
Delete Non-DOS
Delete always in the following order

Logical (All) > Extended > Primary (Last)

6.Go back to first screen after all partitions have been removed.

7.Now we need to setup our new partitions. Go to 1.

This screen looks like this:

Create Primary DOS
Create Extended DOS
Create Logical DOS Drives
Here we create in the following order

Primary > Extended > Logical Drives.

8.First create the Primary. If asked to use all space say No and enter the amount you wish for the C: drive. It should be set automatically to be the (only) Active partition. If not it may ask you or you have to select "2. Set active partition" from the main menu.

9.Next create the Extended Partition. Use all space left.

It probably advances automatically to the next step, creating the Logical DOS Drives.

10.Enter the amount you wish for the D: partition and than the rest for the third partition.

Think first about the size for the partitions.

OK now we're finished with FDISK so just exit it. Next you need to reboot with the disc still inserted and Format all partitions (the C: partition might need to be formatted with "format c: /s", check the Win95 tip). Another reboot and you can go ahead and install Windows.

When your system supports booting from CD just insert the Windows CD and reboot. The setup will start.

If not, follow these steps:

Win98: insert Boot Disk and CD, reboot, choose "2. boot with CDROM support" and once you're at the prompt change to your CD-drive letter (depends on your partition setup) and enter "setup".
Win95: You must format the C: partition with "Format C: /s"!. Next install your CDROM driver, reboot, insert the Win95 CD, change to the CD-driveletter, Enter "setup".

By default windows XP & Vista doesn't show the Administrator in the user list at the welcome screen. Here's a way to get around it.

Procedure:
Start Menu -> Run -> regedit

Now Head up to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\Userlist

Create a new DWORD entry and name it as Administrator and change its value to 1.

Exit and Reboot for the changes to take effect.

To change it back change its value to 0 or simply delete the key.

First of all copy a icon file to the root of the drive.
example: c:\icon.ico

Then create a file called: autorun.inf in c:\autorun.inf
then open that file and type the following:

[autorun]
icon=icon.ico

save and close the file.

Now open my computer and refresh.. and woh! icon changed....
you can apply to other drives too.

Be Careful:
"autorun.inf" and "ico.ico" must be in the root of the drive.
example: c:\autorun.inf and c:\icon.ico.
same on the root.

CREATE NAMELESS FILES & FOLDERS

This Trick will allow you to create files and folders without any name.

Just follow the following Steps:

1.Select any file or folder.

2.Right click on it, press rename or simply press F2.

3.Press and hold the alt key. While holding the Alt key, type numbers 0160 from the numpad.

Note: Type the numbers 0160 from the numpad, that is, the numbers present on the right side of the keyboard. Don't type the numbers which are present on top of the character keys.

4.Press Enter and the nameless file or folder will be created.

Reason: The file or folder that seems nameless is actually named with a single space.

But what if you want to create another nameless file or folder in the same directory ?

For this you will have to rename the file with 2 spaces. Just follow these steps below:

1.Select file, press F2.

2.Hold alt key and type 0160 from the numpad.

3.Release the alt key. Now without doing anything else, again hold alt key and press 0160.

4.Press enter and you will have second nameless file in the same directory.

5.Repeat step 3 to create as many nameless files or folders in the same directory.

TWEAKING WINDOWS SENT TO MENU

How often do you copy songs from a CD? Or some photos from a CD?

What do you do? You select the required files and do a CTRL –C. Open the destination folder and do a CTRL-V. Here is something you can benefit time from. Customize your SEND TO MENU.

This sounds simple and you can do it in less than sixty seconds.
You can create your own BASKET.

First you’ll need access to hidden files. So change your view settings to make all hidden files visible.
Tools -> folder options -> view (tab) and select the show hidden files and folders.
go to parent drive:/documents and settings/(user name)/send to

Open up my computer and locate your most used folders.

Create a shortcut of the most used folders in SEND TO FOLDER.You can do this in a number of ways.

Right click -> send to desktop(create shortcut) and move the shortcut from the desktop to the SEND TO FOLDER.

Copy the most used folder and go to SEND TO FOLDER and right click -> paste shortcut.

Also remember to rename the shortcuts to send to videos or send to potos. We don’t need confusion when we use the same later.

Normally Windows warning beeps are very useful to identify when problem happen. One internal speaker in your system casing creates these beeps. But some time when you are working with your laptop in the library and other quiet areas, then these beeps will be disturbing others. Protocols are set of rules and procedures for communicating. There are many protocols are used but some are commonly used protocols. They are:

TCP/IP

X.25

IPX/SPX and

But the most important protocol is TCP/IP. In this protocol data transmission is managed by dividing the data into different pieces called packets. Each packet of data contains a part of actual data, source computer address, destination address, and information for reassembling data at destination computer. These packets of data travel along the fastest available path in the network. This type of data transmission is called packet switching and is used in internet communication. This is the reason that the protocol is also called Internet Protocol.

TCP/IP is divided into 3 usable classes and 2 experimental classes. Class A, B, C are usable classes and D, E are experimental classes. We can not use experimental classes in network.

UNINSTALL WINDOWS XP USING COMMAND PROMPT (CMD)

Uninstall the upgraded version of windows XP using the command prompt options. If you have upgraded your operating system from the previous versions of windows 98 Second Edition, or Windows Millennium Edition (Me) and now you wants to revert to the operating system that was previously installed on your computer. Windows XP can be removed by uninstalling from a Command Prompt option in Safe mode because XP includes the Uninstall Windows XP option.

Follow the given steps to revert to the operating system that was previously installed on your computer:

To manage windows XP, first you should log onto your computer with administrative rights.

First boot your system in Safe mode by pressing F8 button at the same time before the windows logo appears.

First click on Start button and type cmd in Run option then press Ok button to display the Command Prompt.

At the command prompt type cd/ command and press enter.

Now again type the command cd\windows\system32 and press enter button. After execution of this command, system will change the previous directory mode.

Now type the command at command prompt osuninst.exe to start the process.

Now on the computer screen, follow the instructions on the screen to begin uninstalling Windows XP from your computer to restore the previous operating system.

DELETE SHARED FILES AND FOLDERS

Today tip will help you to delete the files and folders that are being used by another programs and applications, for example a virus affected file. You have tried to delete such kind of files or folders and received the any following messages.

Cannot delete file: the file is in use by the other program

Cannot delete file: There has been a sharing violation

Cannot delete file: The file is in use by another program or user

Cannot delete file: Disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

Cannot delete file: The source or destination file may be in use

Normally, a windows restart will allow you to delete such files or folders that are being used by other program, but if you want to manage it without restart your computer then simply you need to download a freeware tool called Unlocker.

You can download this tool for any windows version using Unlocker link. Download it and run the easy setup.

After installation, right click on file or folder that you want to delete and select the option Unlocker.

If your requested file or folder is used or locked by other application then a small window listing of lockers will appear.

Here simply click on “Unlock All” button and now you can easily delete this file.

DOS 6 POINTS 22 INTERNAL COMMANDS.

DOS 6.22 internal commands DOS (Disk Operating System) has 2 type of commands.

Internal DOS Commands.
External DOS Commands.

In this article I am going to explain only DOS 6.22 internal commands. DOS 6.22 based on 3 files.

Config.sys
Command.com
Io.sys

If you have these 3 files then DOS will boot using these 3 files. These are called DOS 6.22 booting or boot files. All internal commands place in command.com file. Dot com extension is executable in DOS 6.22. here are few DOS internal commands list.

Command	Explanation and usage
DIR	This command is used to display the list of files in current directory or folder.
TIME	This command is used to display and change current system time.
DATE	This command is used to display and change current system date.
CLS	Clear the screens.
RENAME	Rename a file.
DEL or ERASE	Delete one or multiple files.
COPY	Copy one or multiple files.
MOVE	Move one or multiple files.
MD or MKDIR	Create new directory or folder.
CD or CHDIR	Change current folder or directory path.
RD or RMDIR	Remove an empty folder or directory.
PROMPT	To view or change current dos prompt.
VOL	To view hard disk volume or label.
ECHO	To display a message (DOS variables can be use with this command.)
SET	To view or change DOS variables list.
GOTO	To jump the cursor but only in Batch programming.
IF	To check condition but only in Batch programming.
PAUSE	To pause the process normally used in Batch programming.
VER	Displays the DOS version information.
TYPE	Display the contents of a file.
CALL	To call other file in Batch programming.

DOS (Disk Operating System) is first operating system release by Microsoft. Before Microsoft; DOS was released by IBM named IBM DOS. Bill Gates started own company Microsoft and released MS DOS 1.0. Before invention GUI Operating System (Windows) DOS’s last version was 6.22. After DOS 6.22 Microsoft never release MS DOS. MS DOS was a simple and command based operating system. There was no use of mouse in MS DOS. All commands were type able from keyboard. Some MS DOS’s famous commands are still in use in Windows Shell (Command Prompt). There were two types of commands in MS DOS.

Internal Commands

Internet commands were built in DOS shell commands and do not need any external file. Here are some internal commands.

DIR
Get the list of files in current folder or directory

CLS
Clears current working screen of MS DOS)

DATE
View or change current date of system

TIME
View or change current time of system

REN or RENAME
Rename a file

COPY
Copy a file

VER
Get the current DOS version

MD
Create directory or folder

RD

Note: All internal commands are still supported in Windows Command Prompt.
External Commands

External commands were not part of DOS shell and need external files same like Windows Library (DLL) files. Here are some MS DOS’s external commands.

DELTREE
Remove folder including all sub folders and files

LABEL
View or change disk’s label name

FORMAT
Format the Hard Disk or Floppy Disk

CHKDSK
Run disk check on Hard Disk or Floppy Disk.

WHAT ARE FILE TYPES?

What are file types?
File name has 2 parts in it. First one is file title and second is file extension. File extension represents file type. For example "computer.jpg" is a complete file name. Word "computer" is file title and after dot "jpg" is extension. Extension ".jpg" represents that this is a JPEG image or photo file. You must aware of few famous file types or extensions. Here are few examples of famous file types.

DOC
DOC is extension of Microsoft's Word document. You need to install Microsoft Word for read a DOC file. If you don't have installed Microsoft Word in your Windows system then you can use Microsoft's Word Viewer 2003 for view/read DOC file.

XLS
XLS is extension of Microsoft Excel's work book. You need to install Microsoft Excel for read a XLS file. If you don't have installed Microsoft Excel in your Windows system then you can use Microsoft's Excel Viewer 2003 for view/read XLS file.

PDF
PDF if "portable document format". After fame of DOC document there was a problem in images and fonts when DOC document file is transferred to another environment or computer. If another computer doesn’t have installed fonts containing DOC document then DOC file changes its formats and styles. User is unable to read DOC file due to unavailability of fonts that are used in DOC file. To avoid these kinds of problems PDF invented. PDF can contain and embed images and fonts in it and also provide password protected security for reading and writing. PDF also take care about file size.

JPG
JPG is an image or photo file. JPG is standard compressed images file. In the beginning of GUI windows interface and image files there was only BMP (Bitmap) file but BMP doesn’t take care about file size. In other words JPG is latest and standard compressed format of BMP file.

ASCII

ASCII stands for American Standard Code for Information and Interchange. ft is the standard code to represent alphanumeric data. It is defined by ANSI (American Standards Institute).. The first ASCII code was 7-bit code. Then ASCII 7-bit code system was extended to 8-bit code. Today, ASCII 8-bit code system is mostly used in all types of computers. This code system is popular in data communicating.

Unicode

Unicode is a worldwide character code standard. In this code system 16-bits (2 bytes) are used to represent a single character or symbol. Using this code system, 65, 536 (216) different characters can be represented inside the computer. The first 256 codes in Unicode are identical to the 256 codes used by ASCII system.

The Unicode standard was developed in 1991 by a joint engineering team from Apple Computer Corporation and Xerox Corporation. Unicode system is supported by the popular operating systems such as Windows 2000 and OS/2 and also supported by some applications.

MANAGE STARTUP OR BOOTING APP.

Microsoft Windows use different places for booting processes and application. Microsoft Windows use Windows Registry, Boot.ini and Start up Menu for booting or start up applications.

To manage all start up applications is not an easy task but I will tell you an easy task. Microsoft Windows has built in utility for managing start up applications.
Open Run Command, type msconfig and press enter.
System Configuration Utility will load.

Note: Microsoft Windows 2000 does not support this utility.

After loading this utility click on Startup tab and manage all starting applications. If you want to disable any startup process then un check that process and click OK.

Windows will ask to reboot Windows. You can reboot your Windows.

CUSTOMIZE SEND TO MENU

What is Send To menu?
First of all you must know about Send To menu. When you right click on any file or folder in Microsoft Windows XP. You can see Send To sub menu on Context Menu.

You can see some default shortcuts in Send To like My Documents, Compress (zip) folder, Mail Recipient, CD Drive, Desktop etc. I want to add D: Drive shortcut in this Send To Menu.

Here are some steps you have to follow to add new short cut of D: Drive in Sent To Menu.
Open Run Command from Start Menu (Shortcut: WindowsButton + R)
Type %homepath%SendTo and press enter

After this a Send To folder will open you can create new short cut in this folder.
Right click in Folder space and click on New -> Shortcut and type this command D: (Do not click on Browse button).
Click on Next Button

Type your shortcut description My D Drive and click on Finish button.

That's all. You have finished the process. Now you can see your created short cut in Send To menu.

CREATE HDD PARTITION IN WINDOWS XP

Creating hard disk partition using Microsoft Windows XP is too much easy function. You can create, delete and edit hard disk partitions using Windows XP's built in utility (Disk Management).

To load Disk Management utility perform the following steps.
Right click on My computer and click on Manage.
Select disk management from left panel.
Disk management will load.
You can see list of all disks including fixed hard disk, CD-ROM/Writer and USB disks. Management of hard disk partitions is too much easy using this "Disk Management" utility.

You can delete partition by right click on any partition.
You can create new partition by right click on any disk.

Note: If you have data in your partition then you will loose all your data when you will delete your partition. If you want to change your partition size without loosing your data then you can use a third party software "Partition Magic" at your own risk.

Partition Magic can change your partition without loosing your data. It can also change File system of your disk. You can change your file system from NTFS to FAT32 without loosing a file and vice versa.

Remember Windows built in command convert can change file system from FAT to NTFS but it can not convert NTFS to FAT.

HOW TO GET WINDOWS SPECIAL FOLDERS

If you are logged in Windows XP then your login has some special folders according to logged-in user like every logged-in user has own settings in a special folder. Every logged-in user has own desktop folder. Every logged-in user has own "My document" folder.

I am going to explain method to get those special folders. Type the following commands in "Run command".

Get home drive of Windows type the following command in "Run command"
%HOMEDRIVE%

Open Windows folder. It will open folder where Windows is installed.
%WinDir%

Get and open Common Program Files folder.
%CommonProgramFiles%

Get and open Application data folder of current user.
%AppData%

Get and open folder which has all user profiles.
%ALLUSERSPROFILE%

Get and open home path of logged-in user.
%HomePath%

Get and open Program Files folders (Program Files folder has all installed program of Windows).
%ProgramFiles%

Open System drive. Normally it is C: but it can be different in some circumstances.
%SystemDrive%

Open System root folder.
%SystemRoot%

Open temporary files folder.
%Temp%
or
%Tmp%

Open current user's profile folder.
%UserProfile%

Open Desktop folder.
%UserProfile%Desktop

Note: These commands are not case sensitive. You can use these commands in any case like you can use %SystemRoot% or %SYSTEMROOT% or %SyStEmRoOt%. Every case will work on Windows.
