We all know advertising space is huge for all kinds of websites. Whether it's a blog, website, or shopping destination, real estate for ad space is very important to generate revenue (at least initially). Getting a bid for $.10 CPC vs. $10.00 CPC is a huge deal and can really make the difference in your business' bottom line, so creating quality ads to convey your message within your audiences' short attention span is huge (and imperative).

While you can decide what websites you post your ads to and what kind of audience you really want to appeal to, most of this can be done through Google AdWords organically. AdWords will reference websites within its network and place your ads in the appropriate place so you get higher traffic, impressions, clicks, whatever. This is not only good for you (if you can actually make each visit into a conversion), but good for Google because the more success you have, the more success and money Google makes.

Here is an example of Google's 300x250 and 728x90 ad that I saw populated on Mashable. This is a really catchy ad with some basic components that all good publishers and advertisers should look at and take note of. Keep in mind that information and this factor of "catchiness" varies based on the type of ad you have and the audience you are advertising to. You can change from skyscraper, to leaderboard, to the infamous 300x250. And after that, you need to focus on content, color, and most importantly - placement. For people new to this scene, I would suggest looking at "competitors" or surfing your favorite sites to look for ads that you personally would click on. Chances are you've been doing this (finding quality ads) passively all this time - those ads you clicked are the ones that deliver (so take note).

Take it as a lesson - people are still predominantly on websites (though now migrating to mobile devices), and on-page advertisements are a huge industry. Nice touch, Google.

10 Key Takeaways from "The Social Network"

Stay In School: You're Not Mark Zuckerberg. To give proper credit where it's due, I've linked you to the original article written by Vivek Wadhwa from Y Combinator. Here is what I think on the subject. We've heard people say they want to jump onto the entrepreneur wagon and ride it to riches just like Zuckerberg and Gates before him, but in reality...well, it's not realistic. We see and hear all these glorified stories, but what we don't see is all the college dropouts that have failed miserably. Even though Zuck is a very talented programmer, he had perfect timing, a good team, and luck on his side. It really is luck when you consider the following: the general public was ready for a paradigm shift in online communication, Mark met Sean, who managed to get funding and introduce him to the right people, he had team members like Dustin Moskovitz, who the movie heavily downplayed. For Zuckerberg, he was really at the right place at the right time and with the right product. Not many people will have this chance.

The idea of motivation and inspiration driven products over money is thoroughly refreshing. If you take a look back, Mark's primary focus was never to make the money. While his co-founder Eduardo Saverin and eventual President Sean Parker made it their goal to monetize Facebook and grow its value, it seemed like it was always the primary interest to build something that would be used by people. That's why markers like 1,000,000 users are so important over selling the company for a couple mil in the beginning.

Crowdsourcing was important then and it is important now. The scene where Mark shows us that he is crowdsourcing his art homework on Facebook is pure genius. Companies like crowdSpring have sprouted and began leveraging the power of crowdsourcing, showing us that it is truly a revolutionary idea that could only truly be implemented with social networks like Facebook.

Sometimes you have to break a few eggs to make an omelet. Even though Mark and Eduardo had a strong relationship and co-founded the venture together (bringing business and engineering genius together), thefacebook would never have taken off with Eduardo. I know it's a bit mean to say, but what started as an in-dorm project could not have sprouted to be the #1 social network in the world and #2 most visited site behind Google with an early focus on ad space. Zuck was right in the beginning: giving people a "cool" experience will really play its cards in the future - just look where they are now. Ads can really ruin a page and a user experience, which is something that Eduardo did not fully understand at that point in his life. Ads were money, and that's how he measured success. But ads was NOT the way to grow Facebook at such an early age, which is something that Parker knew from the get go. So while it may have seemed awful and "traitorous" to have backstabbed Eduardo like that, it was better for Facebook in the long run (they all probably have more money than they would have gotten with the initial business model).

Don't waste time, be wired in. In a subsection of 37signal's book "Rework" Jason Fried states that "Interruption is the enemy of productivity" and breaks the work day down into several pieces of high productivity disrupted by meetings, phone calls, and incessant interruptions. The phrase being "wired in" infers being a part of the product/a part of the machine. We should all learn a little lesson from programmers and implement it in our daily lives. If our goal is to build something truly impressive, you must bring it to market ASAP and iterate according to the masses. The best way to do this is to work efficiently, passionately and without interruption.

Get it in writing and read your contracts. It's important to get agreements in writing when you are bringing someone into your project, let's say..an NDA Mr. Winklevi (though this is not really the case since the product that they were trying to produce was not directly resembling thefacebook). Also, it is just as important, if not MORE important to thoroughly read contracts that you sign - or at least have an attorney read your agreements for you. In the case of Eduardo Saverin, he wasn't so lucky and suffered a 25% share decrease, though 5% and roughly $1.3B isn't bad at all.

Prepare to lose some friends over a great idea. While it may seem like an amazing opportunity to work on a product you are passionate about with your very best friends, think again. Most of the times you are rarely engaged with your friends in this kind of setting...and once money becomes involved, the entire situation becomes messy. With something as game-changing and revolutionary as Facebook, there was bound to be some internal dispute. Pick your team wisely.

Ideas hold no value, execution counts. What you create is rightfully yours. It's the twins faults that they didn't have Mark sign an NDA, though this may not have prevented Zuck from doing what he did. In any case, the case was simply put (and settled if you ask me) by Eisenberg's most resonant line in the film: "If you were the inventors of Facebook, you'd have invented Facebook." There were services like Friendster and MySpace (oops, My_____) that existed before Facebook, but even though they had the capability and history behind them to create the Facebook concept, they didn't. Enough said.

Don't be afraid to rock the boat. I really enjoyed the scene when Zuck first launch www.facemash.com and subsequently crashed the Hardvard system. Just like Napster defied the system, this was more like a sign of Mark's capabilities and his capacity to do revolutionary things. Sometimes it takes breaking a simple rule (or crashing an entire school's network) to make you realize the potential of a product that would otherwise be halted by red tape.

Go out and build, be inspired. This was the first thing that I thought of (besides, I wish I had created Facebook, hah) when I left that theater. You may not be Zuck, but it just shows how one simple idea, executed on time and well can redefine the way people interact with each other. Who knew Facebook would be an international phenomenon that caused a paradigm-shift in business attitudes, expectations, and the way we all communicate with each other. I'm sure Mark Zuckerberg, himself, was not thinking about this when he wrote the first line of code. So focus on your product, build something with passion, and see where your hard work will take you. It takes time to build something great, as the cliche saying goes: Rome wasn't built in a day."

With social media (namely Facebook and Twitter) becoming dominant forces on the internet and in our daily interactions with people, one question arises that challenges the validity and possible redundancy of SEO (search engine optimization) - is it really SEO vs. social media?

For those of you who aren't exactly sure of what SEO is or does, it is a set of rules/framework that is implemented in almost every step of your website creating process. From registering a domain, to picking appropriate names for your images, and finally down to the hard code, SEO is what gets your website to the top pages of major search engines. To some, it is considered a hardwired marketing tool (also called SEM for search engine marketing), it makes sure that you get more hits on your website by positioning yourself accurately and as efficiently on search engine pages as possible - and for those of you that use Google, Bing, Yahoo, whatever, you know how important it is to be on the top pages (mainly the first page). But search engine doesn't work independently, it requires careful positioning and passive collaboration with search engine spiders that search for relevant content and keywords (relevance is important), PageRank (that's LARRY PAGE(Rank) from Google) and link building, and a variety of other variables that determine your overall search engine ranking. Therefore, ranking high in search engines and getting a good SEO can be the decisive factor between whether you or your competition sells more.

But now that social media is becoming ever more popular on the web, does search engine optimization still matter? Well, the answer is yes. While some people may claim that social media and social networks may take the place of SEO and people will more naturally search for businesses services like Facebook and Twitter, having high ranking in an organic search is still an utterly important factor and builds important credibility. Consider this simple fact: if people are still Googling, then it's still important to get good search engine ranking.

However, this isn't to say that social media is any less important. It's actually just as important and is an important factor that is beginning to work more in collaboration with organic search engine queries. Today, we see that tweets are being incorporated in organic Google searches. In addition, searches for businesses or company employees will almost always result in a Google results page that reflects their Twitter username or Facebook profile. Moreover, creating a virtual brand that retains your business personality is important in reaching out to customers and clients at a much more personal and intimate level. And if you ask anyone today that actively uses the internet for their searching and browsing needs, they will almost always say that they use multiple points of data (organic search engine listings, virtual presence on social networks, and word of mouth from friends) to determine the perfect store or product they are looking for. With SEO and social media covered - that's already two sources of data that you've maximized to gaining reputation for new clients. But let's not forget that last one, which is just as important as the two. With greater presence on social media, your web influence can take the place of WOM in some circumstances, but also deliver good advice that is passed through your social networks.

On a side note, many people think social media means ONLY Facebook, Twitter, and the like, but that's simply not true. While it is among the most important resources that build virtual presence online, things like creating a blog that generates thousands of hits and comments, making videos like the Blendtec blender videos (which has increased its ranking for the keyword "blender"), and other things of a viral nature are just as effective. Taking this to the next level; if SEO is NOT optimized for content appropriately and link building is weak, having a pure a stronger social media marketing strategy will always be better.

So let's take a quick look back and what we've discussed.

More companies are moving from traditional means of marketing in display/print/TV ads and moving to a much more interactive and cheap method of marketing through SEO(SEM) and social media(SNO)

SEO and social media complement each other by collaborating to deliver relevant information to an end-user that will trust a source if it is credible in multiple facets

Word of mouth is just as important if not the most important factor in swaying most people to making a purchase or trusting a business and social media can be a strong influence on WOM if done correctly

In many cases, social media will narrow the target customer/client into a niche audience and allow the appropriate businesses to funnel these selected people into their chosen search keywords

Today, they are both becoming ever more intertwined. SEO has begun to focus on real-time news and information from sources like Twitter, etc. and trying to make social media more relevant in organic searches. When people look for a business or a product on Google, they may find tweets from the company or their Twitter profile, which may convert into a click and then a future deal. So while both SEO and social media advance each day, they become more interconnected and even more important for businesses to take advantage of. Google and other search engines want people to find the answer they are looking for and in many cases social media may help them get there by portraying a more human feel than just search engine generated results can deliver. And lastly, social media will help any business communicate beyond the initial introduction to your new and existing customers in a way that a static page cannot.

So, what do you think? As a company, do you think SEO or social media is more important? Let us know what you think and if you share our sentiment.

Hey Square2 Technologies fans and friends,

In case you missed it last week, we started a new #SQ2 feature on Twitter where we will share 1 SEO tip every day. Just follow us at @SQ2Tek to get the scoop or search for our hashtag #SQ2. We're testing this feature out to become more involved with our Twitter followers and share facts and tips for heavy web users and even first time bloggers who are trying to create greater presence on the web. In essence, we will be tipping you off to the tricks of the trade, some more obvious than others and some a little trickier that took us years of professional experience to find - and yes, you get the inside scoop (limit one per day :]).

Here are some of the latest #SQ2 #SEO tweets straight from our Twitter stream:

via hookupfeed.com

For those of you who just started reading and following us, HookUpFeed (or HUF as the regulars call it) is one of our clients. We've worked with them relentlessly in the last couple of months to get them relaunched and rebranded (in a sense). Since we've been on board, Square2 Technologies has helped HUF launch a new website, develop some online presence in major social networks, and promote a killer contest.

The latest contest, #2 since bringing us on board, gave HUF users the chance to opt-in a new shortcode (text 'Jaron' to 65374). Trumping numbers for the last contest, HUF managed to bring in 8,000 uniques - many from Jaron's fan base.

For the contest, users text the keyword 'Jaron' into HUF's special shortcode to enter for a chance to win a trip to Las Vegas! Included are the cost of the flight, hotel, tickets to the Coyote Country Fest 2010 at the Orleans Hotel, backstage passes, and some spending money - for TWO! What a great promotion from HUF!

Unfortunately for you guys, the promotion has since ended and HUF has already picked a randomly generated user.

We promise to keep you up to date with future HUF happenings, deals, and work we're doing with them. But if you wanted to learn more, check out their new site at: http://www.hookupfeed.com

Happy TGIF!

Square2 Technologies is now on Posterous! As we were considering a method to get our latest news to you, we thought a middle blogging platform would be the best, most informative, and interactive way to do it. We wanted to have a single place where all of our friends and clients could come to read about the work we've been doing and ask questions about existing projects. One additional feature that attracted us to Posterous was the infinitely easy domain registration process - of which you will soon find our blog hosted at blog.sq2tek.com. We also like how Posterous seamlessly integrates with all our other social networks - Twitter, FB page, and more through their autopost feature. We hope this blog will become a site for our fans, clients, and partners to communicate with each other and talk about interesting topics.

If you are new to Square2 Technologies or just stumbled upon our blog, here is a brief introduction:
