FEATURES

MonkeyWordSearch is a powerful recursive keyword search utility with GUI input box, file select control, file-type and maxdepth filters which let you search files on your Linux PC/Laptop for your search phrases. It's features are listed below.

1.View results on browser: Display the search results on the browser.

2.Highlight keywords/search phrase[Case-insensitive!]: Highlight the keywords within search results for emphasis. You'll like it that Monkey displays a match regardless of whether it is UPPERCASE, lowercase or CamelCase!

3.List text files with/without result: Locate and separately list which files contain results and which do not.

4.List non-text(skipped) files: Locate and separately list skipped non-text/ASCII files.

4a.Here's something even more interesting. Click on the [Clickable File List] button to view the clickable version of the same page useful for viewing pdfs, images etc but remember to NOT CLICK on executable or very large files.

5.Display results as Encoded or Normal: Click anywhere inside the result box or click on the [View Results] link above the result box to display the results page that pops up for text-view or web-view of the search results. While the top [HTML-Encoded text view] is always intact, remember that the bottom [Normal HTML web view] below it may sometimes seem broken since incomplete HTML code in search results might make it look broken. This is normal behavior. Click on the [Result Fragments: Normal] button on top of the page TWICE to bring up the normal section to top.

6.View search file itself, not just results: Click on the [View File] link on the top-right of the search result box to view the file on the browser. If this link did nothing, then the filename may have goofy characters in it and, most often we can click either on the search result box or the [View Results] link and then click on the link to the file on top of the results page. If this didn't work either, at least we have the filename parts with the path so we can open the file manually.

7.Exclude big files from search but view their names: Exclude big files [greater than 5MB] from the search but view their names.

8.Find search progress percentage-completed [MonkeyWordSearchTailbox window]

How do I activate/de-activate this window? This window is activated by default. To de-activate it, find and comment these two lines in the [$HOME/tools/MonkeyWordSearch/Mws.bash] file.

[You may activate it again by uncommenting the two lines above if you choose to.]

How is it useful? Once you press [OK] on the 4th and final input box, you see this window if it is activated. This Rxvt terminal window with a fast-scrolling tailbox displays the total file count, percentage-completed, current file being processed with path among other things.

How do I exit from it? Press [CTRL-C] from within this window to exit from it. Double-click on [$HOME/tools/MonkeyWordSearch/MwsCleanup.bash] script to terminate MonkeyWordSearch completely. Find more details at the [III.Termininating MonkeyWordSearch] section below.

Is there a search log? Remember to check the [$HOME/tools/MonkeyWordSearch/MwsSearchLog.htm] file for the complete record of the search after the search completes.

9.MonkeyWordSearch window: Once you press [OK] on the 4th final input box, this [oscillating progress-bar] window starts up along with the [MonkeyWordSearchTailbox] window. Along with keyword and other input parameter details, you can also view the search progress with an oscillating progress bar. You may stop and exit from the Monkey before it completes by pressing [Escape] from within this window and pressing [Ctrl-C] from the MonkeyWordSearchTailbox window. Don't forget to cleanup strays with [$HOME/tools/MonkeyWordSearch/MwsCleanup.bash] before re-running the Monkey!

10.Use 4 GUI input boxes: These are used for inputs. Press [Escape] to exit.

NOTE 1: LINUX COMMANDS AND TOOLS USED

You wouldn't believe it that a simple program such as MonkeyWordSearch needs so many Linux commands and tools to fetch you the results! First you need to manually verify or set 4 files at the top of the $HOME/tools/MonkeyWordSearch/Mws.bash script. Change samples below to suit your environment.

Apart from these, there are 17 Linux commands/tools Monkey needs. You may appreciate the fact that Monkey automatically scans and sets the locations of these following essential Linux commands without you having to manually check each one of them. When you run Monkey, one of the first things it does is to check for these 17 files and error out if it misses anything. If MonkeyWordSearch doesn't start up, open the [$HOME/tools/MonkeyWordSearch/MwsMissing.out] file to view the details of found and not found files and fix the problems if any and re-run Monkey after fixing problems. Here's the list of these mostly standard and almost always available 17 Linux commands/tools:

NOTE 2: SIZE OF EXCLUDE FILES

While leaving out non-text/ASCII files, Monkey also excludes text files bigger than 5MB from being searched but lists their names so you can search those big files manually if you choose to. You can change the default big file size by searching for and changing the line below in the Mws.bash script

NOTE 3: OPENING FILES FROM MONKEYWORDSEARCH BROWSER LINKS OR BUTTONS

MonkeyWordSearch has made it easy for you to be safe when you click on files to open them from the browser by segregating non-text/ASCII files and excluding them from being searched. Again, even among text/ASCII files it picks out and excludes files bigger than 5MB from being searched. Best of all, MonkeyWordSearch presents you a  skipped(non-text) files page with non-clickable list of file names by default, but you can make it clickable by pressing the button just above the list. Talk about having the best of both worlds, safety and convenience! As a general rule of thumb, though, ALWAYS exercise caution when clicking on links because of the way browsers make file-associations. For example, don't click on executables, huge files etc.

NOTE 4: BROWSE YOUR SEARCH FOLDER WITH YOUR BROWSER!

Click on the link to the right of [Search Location] on the top of the main search result page to browse the search folder with your browser.

NOTE 5: X-RAY-MONKEY: MONKEY FOUND A RESULT BUT I CAN'T FIND IT IN THE FILE - HEY WHAT'S UP?

The result box shows a match but when you open the file and search for it you don't find it, what's going on? This may happen when you're searching html files where there could be matches found in non-content areas such as html code or javascript code. If you're opening the html search file with your browser, rightclick and select [view page source] and then press [CTRL-F] to do a search and you'll find it.

NOTE 6: [ViewFile] LINK ON TOP-RIGHT OF SEARCH RESULT BOX WON'T WORK - HEY WHAT'S UP?

If the [ViewFile] link on the top-right of the search result box doesn't open the file, the filename possibly has some weird characters. Click inside the result box to open the results page on a new tab/window and click on the link on the top of the page to open the file. If this doesn't work either, at least we have the path and filename of this rogue! Just open it with your file manager.

NOTE 7: RESULTS FROM A ZIP FILE IS SHOWING UP IN THE RESULT BOX - HEY WHAT'S UP?

Sometimes you may see results from zip files shown in the result box. This may be normal. If a html file is compressed into a zip file, it may be seen as "HTML document, UTF-8 Unicode text, with very long lines" by the [file] command that is used to filter text/ascii files. In this case, the file may be opened by a text editor.

NOTE 8: SMART IDEA - SAVE THAT SEARCH!

Let's say you just searched for files with the keyword [Linux] and want to save it for future. Just copy the [Mws.htm] file and rename it to something such as [Mws.linux.htm]. This will benefit especially those who keep their stuff well-organized on their PC/Laptop since they will have only one two places to search for anything! Isn't this a good idea?

NOTE 9: DUMB SEARCHES[?]

1.Avoid searching system folders if you don't intend to.[Eg. /var, /usr, /etc etc.]
2.If you delete lots of files using PcManFM GUI file manager, then your [/root/.local/share/Trash] folder for root user or [$HOME/.local/share/Trash] folder for non-root users may be huge. Remember to avoid searching these if you don't intend to.
3.Your [$HOME/.thumbnails] folder may have tens of thousands of files, you may not want to search these.

CONCLUSION

This Monkey sure made me go all bananas! Seriously, it took a lot of time and effort to get it going but it sure will make your life easy if you choose to use it! MonkeyWordSearch makes searching files on your Linux system for keywords a much better experience first since it lets you view results on your browser with keyword highlighting. Secondly you can view not just the results but the file itself. Thirdly you get a clickable list of files with results and those without. Fourthly you get a clickable list of skipped(non-text) files. And most of all, it lets you view the progress of the search the whole time while letting you terminate it INSTANTLY with just a double-click on [$HOME/toos/MonkeyWordSearch/MwsCleanup.bash] then clicking [Open] or by typing [mwsclean] from the commandline!

Here's the secret. Once you get used to typing [mws] and [mwsclean] from the commandline or its equivalent of double-clicking on [$HOME/toos/MonkeyWordSearch/Mws.bash] and [$HOME/toos/MonkeyWordSearch/MwsCleanup.bash] and then clicking [Open] to start and terminate the Monkey, I guarantee you'll be using them all the time without knowing it!

Linux[Zorin7 OS] Power Tip - Make The Start Menu And Task Bar Truly Yours

If you're like most people, you just use your pc/laptop as you bought it - with no snooping, no messing around - use it just the way it is. Why fix stuff if it isn't broken in the first place, right? While this policy may be best-suited for most end-users, it may not be good enough for the adventurous few, especially the geeky programmers, developers etc. They tend to take everything apart, whether or not they can put them back together. Adding user programs and scripts to the Start Menu was beyond most people's reach not too long ago. Why bother when you can create shortcuts on the desktop? Not any more. Zorin7 OS [Ubuntu] comes with a program called [Main Menu] you can start from [Start Menu->Accessories] that helps us add our programs and scripts to the Start Menu. It also has an applet on the task bar [Application launch bar settings] to add stuff to the task bar. You can start this by rightclicking on an icon in the task bar on the LHS, to the right of the [Start Menu] icon.

We are going to accomplish four things in this exercise

We'll create a oneliner shell script that digs up a random word, looks it up on the dictionary and lets you view the results from your browser.
We'll describe the steps to add it to the Zorin7 OS startup menu.
We'll describe the steps to add it to the Zorin7 OS taskbar with an icon for a one-click word lookup anytime.
We'll conclude everything with a bigger and better script that includes both the random word lookup on step1 above(no user input) and ALSO a user-word lookup(optional user input).

STEP 1: CREATE THE ONELINER SHELL SCRIPT FOR RANDOM WORD LOOKUP

A. Create the oneliner shell script for our random dictionary lookup

First create a folder such as /home/jwhat1/Tools/LDWords, create a new file[LookupDictWords.sh] and save the code below in that file within that folder (You can use a GUI editor such as Geany or Leafpad or you can use terminal editors such as Vi or Emacs or Nano to create/edit a text file in Linux).

B. Open up a terminal and change the file to executable.

Instead of running the command above from a terminal, you could also locate it on PCManFM file manager, rightclick on this file, select [properties], and set [view content] and [execute] to [anyone] and [change content] to [only owner and group] on the [permissions] tab.

C. Associate this file to be run by /bin/bash.

Rightclick on this file, select [Open With], click on [Custom Command Line] tab and enter [/bin/bash] in the [Command Line To Execute] input box, and click [OK].

D. Run the script

I.From the commandline on a terminal
Type
$bash LookupDictWords.sh

II.With PCManFM GUI file manager
1.Rightclick on LookupDictWords.sh and select [/bin/bash] to run it.
2.Doubleclick on it and when you see [Execute file] dialog box, click on [Open] to run it.

STEP 2: ADD THE SCRIPT TO THE ZORIN7 OS START MENU

So we have completed the first step of creating the file. Now let us see what we need to do to put it in the Start Menu.

1.First bring up [Main Menu] from [Start Menu->Accessories->Main Menu]. (Click on image above for bigger view)

2.Open the [New Menu] input box from [Main Menu->New Menu] and type the name of the menu/program group and a comment. Click on the icon on the top left on the input box to select an icon for our new program group if you wish.(Click on image above for bigger view)

Do you see the new Main Menu group we just created on top left? (Click on image above for bigger view)

3.Now, create a new menu item

[IMPORTANT] Click FIRST on the new menu group we created on top left.
Click on [New Item] button on the right.
Now enter a name. Use the [Browse] button to select the script or enter it manually. Type a comment if you want.
Click on the icon on the top left of the input box to select an icon for our new program if you want. (Click on image above for bigger view)

Make sure to confirm the new menu item we just created(It's in the middle right on top). (Click on image above for bigger view)

4.Click on [Start Menu->LDWords->LookupDictWords.sh] to run our new script! Did you see the random word lookup results on your browser? I did. We have successfully accomplished the first half of our goal - configuring the Main Menu to display our script! (Click on image above for bigger view)

STEP 3: DISPLAY THE SCRIPT ON THE ZORIN TASKBAR

1.Rightclick on an icon in the taskbar on the LHS to the right of the [Start Menu] and select [Application Launch Bar Settings] to bring up the [Application Launch Bar]. (Click on image above for bigger view)

2.Click on the [Arrow] to expand the [LDWords] group on the RHS and select the [LookupDictWords.sh] script. (Click on image above for bigger view)

3.Now click on the [+Add] button in the middle of the box to add the script to [Applications] on the LHS. Use the [Up] and [Down] buttons in the middle to move program icons on the task bar to the left or right. (Click on image above for bigger view)

4.Can you now see our script on the taskbar on the LHS to the right of the Start Menu? Click on it to run the script. (Click on image above for bigger view)

Yes! It works! We've got the results displayed on the browser automatically! (Click on image above for bigger view)
From now on, whenever you are thirsty for learning words or just bored, click on our icon on the taskbar to look up a random word! Just wait till you see the results on the browser before clicking again because clicking fast might return unpredictable results.

STEP 4: USE THE BIGGER AND BETTER SCRIPT [Includes BOTH User Word Lookup & Random Word Lookup]

Lets you lookup YOUR OWN WORD on the dictionary
Comes up with a random word if you leave the input box empty and press [OK]
Above all, looks much better than the random script output!

Here are the steps.

Step 4A. Back up the random word script above(For when you want to use the random script above seperately).

Step 4C. Click on the task bar icon for LookupDictWords.sh script to start.

Leave input empty and press [OK] for random word lookup or

Press [Escape] key or click on [CANCEL] to exit.

If you like this bigger script, leave it as it is. If you are lazy or if you want no input box annoyance, use the code we saved and backup this for later use instead.

PLEASE NOTE

ADD SCRIPT TO MAIN MENU FIRST
User programs and scripts need to be added to the Start Menu first before you can add them to the task bar.

DEBUGGING
First open a terminal, go to /tmp directory and run one or more of the following commands to debug.
cd /tmp;
If the browser won't start, make sure you can start your browser manually by typing at the command prompt
$chrome
or
$firefox
etc. Use
$which chrome
or
$which firefox
etc to get the path and insert it in the script if needed.

You may also use the commands below.
ls -l dicx.htm [See if output file exists]
cat dicx.htm [View contents of output file]
ps -ef|grep LookupDictWords.sh [Use this to see if the script is running and possibly remove it with the [kill -9 pid] command if needed]

CLICK-AND-WAIT
Click gently on the LookupDictWords.sh icon on the task bar, and WAIT for the browser to come back with the results BEFORE CLICKING AGAIN. Fast and furious clicking may cause unpredictable results.

Chunk-A-File: Two Ways To Split A File In Linux

Today's generations have it all easy. Even a monkey can take a more awesome picture than you can. Chips have gotten smaller and smaller(computer chips not potato chips!) but better and better. Memory once measured in bytes, and kilobytes, now gets thrown around in gigabytes and terrabytes on the desktop, primitive and bland websites of the pre-y2k era have become dizzyingly attractive, versatile and complex.

Alright, now back to file-splitting. If my memory serves me right, I don't think there were any native Unix or Linux split commands in the 1980s-90s. One would probably have a "splitting headache" just thinking about how to accomplish file splits and end up having to use third party tools! With the arrival of the native Linux split command in the early 2000s, you could, for example, now use the [split --number=10 words.out] command for dividing the words.out file into 10 equal chunks by size, and the [split --lines=9917 words.out] command to split it into 10 equal parts by line counts. However, let's explore two home-cooked scripts that I came up with, using [head] and [tail] commands, for splitting a Linux text file, the first to split it equally into 10 equal parts, and the second script to split it to its tenths both using line counts and not file size to accomplish the division.

PREP WORK - CREATE INPUT DATA FILE

PREP 1. We'll use a copy of the [/usr/share/dict/words] file as the input file.

To find the line count to divide the file into 10 parts, first find the total lines, then divide it by 10.

PREP 2. If you find it [/usr/share/dict/words file] missing, don't worry, we'll create another one[wordfile.out] on the fly.

We'll create a dummy file and populate it with output from [ls] command run on [/bin], [/usr/bin], [/usr/local/bin] folders, and even add a [.tmp] suffix to every file name for extra safety.

Good. We see that we have generated 2238 lines for our input file [wordfile.out]. Though we have created two input files [words.out and wordfile.out], we'll use the [words.out] file for this exercise. Now to display the line counts for tenths, use this oneliner.

The oneliner above calculates the total and the tenths in one loop. Remember the numbers denote line numbers in the input file.

SCRIPT 1: Script to divide the file into 10 equal parts by line count.

Ok. Here's the first script[ChunkAFile.bash] that divides the input file into 10 equal parts by line count.

The image below shows how we list the script name first, then run it, and also display the output files[t01, t02 through t10].

Let's check the wordcount [l(lines);m(characters);c(bytes)]. Towards the bottom of the image below, also notice that the line count is same[9917] for all 10 files on the first column of the listing. This verifies that our ten output files are equal by line count.

SCRIPT 2: Script to divide the file to its tenths by line count.

Let's now examine the second script[ChunkAFileTenth.bash] that divides the input file to its tenths by line count. Here's the script

Same as above with script1, the image below shows the listing of the script name, then shows it being run, and finally displays the output files[01-tenth.out through 10-tenth.out]. See how their sizes increase with every tenth.

Okay. We are through with our two scripts! We have come up with new ways to calculate and accomplish how to split a file into ten equal parts, and also to split it to its tenths and verified our results with line counts. Remember we can use the same technic to extend it to split a file to its hundredths[1/100th(1%), 2/100th(2%) through 100/100th(100%) etc.]

Bible Quiz

It will be close to 3 months tomorrow since I wrote the last blog post[Sig3-Simple Image Gallery For Linux]. While it has always been my top priority to keep this blog and my sqlhtm.com website updated as frequently as possible, it has been a hard thing to do because of where I am in life now - away from home, waiting anxiously to get back to work, family and life. Luckily, what has been a loss of productivity on the blog end, has been a gain for the website since I have added a few more stuff to the website.[Bible Quiz, Aesop Tweets Browser and Aesop Tweets Slide show]. In this post, I just wanted to write about a bunch of interesting things that came my way during the last few weeks.

1. BIBLE QUIZ

Do you know there is an interesting little Bible Quiz at sqlhtm.com? This is the latest Html/Javascript online applications there. It is a tiny little starter quiz with just 20 questions from the first few chapters of the first two books of the Bible[Genesis and Exodus]. While you can easily score 100% with single answer questions, you may not do so with a multiple-choice type quiz, at least not easily! Don't complain, things have been smoothed out here. For one thing, you can click on any answer choice of any question any number of times without time or number of attempt restrictions. For another, you just need to press the "Check Answer" button for a hidden answer box with the answer text to slide out for you! I am sure you will find this quiz exciting and informative. Go ahead, take a look and make sure you are a real Bible expert!

2. NUMBER CRUNCHING

You know what, I also tripped on the words "1 crore crores" somewhere somehow and didn't know how much it really stood for. So I started to dig a little, crunch some 1's and 0' and ended up with the table I think you will find useful, specially if you are an Indian NRI, since it has a side-by-side comparison of the numbers of the Indian and Western number formats. This table has been heavily inspired by a website I found on my mobile phone, which I could not find again to make a mention of! While I want to thank them I also want to remind you that the numbers are valid for their own currencies and not as conversion of, for example, the US dollar to the Indian rupee or the Indian rupee to the US dollar. In other words, we're doing number analysis here, not currency conversion.

All the numbers crunched and tabled, I finally found the answer to my nagging question: How much really is "1 crore crores"?

Answer:
1 crore crores is 100000000000000[14 zeroes after 1], [10,00,00,00,00,00,000 in Indian number format][100,000,000,000,000 in Western number format].
1 crore crores happens to be Western 100 Trillion[=100,000 Billions][=100 Million Millons][=100,000,000 Millions].
1 crore crores happens to be Indian 100 Lakh Crores[=10,000 Lakh Lakhs].

My problem solved, I still have a bigger question: Why should some people in the world have soooooo much more money than all the others???

I think, in all fairness, income distribution should be more equitable where ever you are, most everyone hovering around the median, give or take, for example, a 10-time disparity between the highest and the lowest.

To illustrate this, consider a hypothetical situation where the lowest income someone makes is $10/hr [$1600/month][$20,000/yr] and the highest income that anyone can make is capped at $100/hr [$16,000/month][$200,000/yr]. While you may say this kind of thing is hard to implement in the current scheme of things, how can you justify a handful of individuals making more money than even some small countries? How can you turn a blind eye to how this in turn deprives thousands of unemployed people's opportunity to get employed and support their loved ones? THERE'S GOT TO BE A WAY TO SPREAD THE WEALTH OF THE NATIONS MORE EVENLY AMONG THE PEOPLE. What would be the downside to this kind of approach? What do you think?

3. JAVASCRIPT TIPS

Talking of numbers, I also wanted to share 2 functions I used in my Bible quiz, that use numbers in interesting ways.

Tip 1 [Deep and complex nested If statement]

I have used the Javascript "IF" statement(short form) before but wasn't sure how nested or complex it could be. The Bible quiz gave me a chance to test out and use a complex nested short form of the "IF" statement.

Problem

Every one of the 20 questions in the Bible quiz has multiple-choice answers [a,b,c,d,e,f and g]. I need to convert these into numbers [1,2,3,4,5,6 and 7] so I can use it to retrieve the correct answer from the answers array.

Solution

Look at the code below. Receiving one of the letters "a" through "g" as input, this function assigns a corresponding number "1" through "7" as the value of the variable "anscnv" and returns it.

Else if "let" is equal to "f" then return 6;
Else return 7;

Tip 2 [Ceil is the champ here!]

Problem

I have a little show/hide accordion blue answer box on the top of every row [5 questions per row] that opens up when you press the "Check Answer" button and closes when you click on the "Close" button on the top right. That means a total of 4 boxes for 20 questions. The problem is to store
"1" as the box number in the variable ansboxnum when we click any of the five "Check Answer" buttons on the 1st row,
"2" as the box number in the variable ansboxnum when we click any of the five "Check Answer" buttons on the 2nd row,
"3" as the box number in the variable ansboxnum when we click any of the five "Check Answer" buttons on the 3rd row and
"4" as the box number in the variable ansboxnum when we click any of the five "Check Answer" buttons on the 4th row.

Solution

There could be many ways to solve this but here is one. Look at the line of code below.


var ansboxnum = (Math.ceil(q / 5) <= 1 ? 1 : Math.ceil(q / 5));

Assuming q to be the question number[1 through 20], this is what the code above does. If q divided by 5 rounded up(ceil) is less than or equal to 1 then it stores 1 as the value of the variable "ansboxnum", else it stores q/5 rounded up(ceil) as ansboxnum. This means,
for q in questions [1,2,3,4,5] it stores 1,
for q in questions [6,7,8,9,10] it stores 2,
for q in questions [11,12,13,14,15] it stores 3 and
for q in questions [16,17,18,19,20] it stores 4, exactly what we need.

4. INDIAN BUDGET[2014-15]

I recently read about the Indian budget in the papers and looked for something that would interest me as an NRI. Sure, yes, I did find some thing interesting! The tax-free baggage allowance for inbound fliers has been upped to Rs.45,000[$748 USD] from Rs.35,000[$582 USD] for the budget year 2014-15. So, travellers, remember to bring that $700 USD in, invest, donate or make good use of it anyway you can!

Sig3 - Simple Image Gallery For Linux

"No, no, this isn't a world band shortwave radio, this is Sig3-a tiny Linux image gallery generator!"

Sig3 is an image gallery generator for Linux. By making thumbnails of common image files in a folder, Sig3 helps you preview them and also open them with your browser where you can do almost anything and everything to them with browser addons and plugins.

For example, assuming you have installed ColorZilla for Firefox, when you run Sig3 and the image gallery comes up on a Firefox window, you'll also notice ColorZilla's colorpicker icon on the toolbar.[Enable it first with Menu->View->Toolbars->Navigation Toolbar]. Now click on it and move it over the thumbnails on the left panel of the Sig3 image gallery to view the color code of every pixel on every thumbnail! Just click to copy it to the clipboard so you can paste it without memorizing it! How cool! By identifying color codes of an image you can style the image's container or page with a matching or contrasting color in your web projects! This is just a little example. Think of all the image addons, plugins, tools, possibilities!

I built it on Zorin OS 7/Ubuntu Linux with a shell script and use it often myself. I am sure you'll find tons of uses for it. It's really easy to use, you can either type [sig3] from a terminal, [double-click] on the [sig3.bash] script or [Rightclick] on an image folder and select [sig3.bash] from the [Open With] menu to create and view the image gallery on your browser. Obviously, as mentioned later, you need to create a link called sig3 at /usr/bin and also make sure it is executable before you can do that. I used a Linux user account [jc] with root privileges. You might need root privileges to create the link at /usr/bin. Remember to disregard the square brackets used throughout for highlight and emphasis. Go ahead and read more.

UPDATE

Have you tried Sig3 on your laptop/pc yet? Have you at least tried the online demo? If you feel that things are a little slow or that the transitions don't work for you, it probably is the image size and number of images! Try it on a folder with small [clipart type] images and I guarantee that things will work perfectly! I experienced this myself! This is something I have also observed not just here, but also in many online image galleries; the more the number of images in the gallery and the bigger the sizes of images, the longer it takes for the images to load and the transitions to work. Also make sure your browser supports CSS3 transitions by comparing with other image galleries with transitions. Well, that's my humble opinion!

View local folders and files from the browser itself! Extremely useful to view html, text, image and pdf files in the browser itself! Be your age and avoid clicking on huge files, exe files or unknown file types though:) This is important.
5.YEAR CALENDAR WITH LIVE CLOCK: [Cal] button
View year calendar-2014 with a live clock. You know what, you can actually use it next year, the year after that, and on and on.
6.THEMES: [ThemeLt & ThemeDk buttons]
Press one of these buttons repeatedly till you get to a color of your choice for the theme of the search box on the left hand side. Also, if you change a background image and find that the default theme for that bg slot doesn't match the colors of the image, change it at the end of the INPUT tag. For example, to change the default theme of [Bg1], change the [setTheme] statement at the end below with a named[Eg. pink] or hexadecimal[Eg. #00ff00] color to match those of the image.
Tip!

After clicking on a [Theme] button, mouseover on it to find the active color.
Follow the same procedure to change the theme color for the other 5 images if needed.
7.HTML5 MUSIC PLAYER[Some newer browsers only]
Use the HTML5 music player to play one track, over and over again! Either listen to the sample here or swap it with your own favorite mp3 or ogg music files. Remember Firefox can play .ogg files but not mp3, Chrome can play both. Look for and change the code below in the Multisearch3.htm file to change the music file.

Click on this to hide the search box on the left and the viewer on the right. Click on this again to show the search box again. Doubleclick not neccesary!

I once came across an interesting oneliner on stackoverflow. This little seemingly repetitive sequence of three sets of decimal numbers really was counting. Counting big time! From zero through one thousand! Impressive. Check the original oneliner below.

CURLIES FOR COLOR CODE GENERATION?

A while after reading this, I needed a way to generate websafe colors for my color-matching/color-testing tool and this little guy suddenly jumped at me from nowhere. Can I use this counter for my color tool? If I can get it to create the list of color codes for me, that would be so great since I can improve upon it! I started simply at first and got the list of color codes. Then I added a div to hold the styling elements. Finally I added width, height and background color to the style string and stored the output in a html file with the 216 websafe colors and immediately opened it with the browser all at once. All within the oneliner itself, of course! It was so simple, so easy and so cool. You must try this oneliner and two other variations of it yourself to view the websafe color pages it creates. Don't forget to change the browser if needed!

HOW I UNDERSTAND THE RED,GREEN,BLUE[RGB] COLOR SCHEME
Think of a movie screen with 3 lights behind it colored red, green and blue. Assume you have a brightness controller with a slider for each color numbered 0 through 255 for brightness control. Now it is easy to imagine what would happen when you move all three color sliders down to zero [0 0 0]. There would be complete darkness - color black[#000]! With the sliders maxed out[255 255 255], there would be maximum brightness - color white[#fff]! Moving each slider randomly any way you like, you get all the different colors on the color palette. For example with the sliders at [0 100 0] you get dark green, at [255 0 0] you get red etc. One of my todo items is to mix 1 can each of red, green and blue paints to see how white the mixture would be!

Look at the color pairs below. These 8 pairs make up the 16 basic colors. These complement each other really nicely! Lighter shades of these pairs would be my first choice for simple, no-frills color-coordination!

DECIMAL COLOR NOTATION

All colors can be noted in the decimal form using digits 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9. For example the color black has the decimal form [0 0 0] in the RGB representation, three numbers one for red, green and blue each at the one end of the spectrum. The same way, the color white has the decimal form [255 255 255] at the other end.

HEXADECIMAL COLOR NOTATION

TRIPLETS

All the doubled up hexadecimal colors can be shrunk to 3digits. For example the color black [#00 00 00] can also be written as #000 using just one zero for every doubled up zero. The same way, the color white [#ff ff ff] can also be written as #fff using just one f for every doubled f. This kind of triplet short form is specified by CSS only so they need to be used within the style strings of CSS only. Some browsers may not respect them.

OKAY WITH COLOR THEORY, LET'S GET BACK TO OUR ONE-LINER

First, count the colors. We should have 216 websafe colors.

Good, we have our 216, no problem. Now the color codes themselves.

We just got the skeleton structure for our websafe color list. Let us go ahead and put some flesh on it to make up the html styling.

Insert an empty div tag to hold the styling string. Remember to escape the "<",">","/" characters with "\" since they have special meaning in shell scripting.

Get the style tag in and remember to escape the space character " " and double quote """ escaped with the "\" this time.

Add the width, height, and background tags and escape the ":" and "#" characters.

We're almost done! This in fact is our html content!

Add the code to store the html output in a file and open it with the web browser to view it all at once.

I used Chrome, you change it to match your browser if it is different.

Do you see the html output file displayed? Yes but it's so narrow! Let's increase the width to 100% so we can see the colors in all their glory.

Wow. Our little oneliner looks nothing short of magnificent to me. Don't you agree?

JWHAT'S "CURLY COUNTER" COMPUTER COUNTING TEST

I was suddenly inspired to put the original curly counter oneliner above to test on my Toshiba Satellite M45-S165 laptop with 1.50GHz CPU, 1.4GB RAM and 80GB harddisk. While the original counted to a thousand, I tried to count as high as I could in steps. The obvious fact is to repeat the curly sets as many times as you need. For example, a thousand has 3 zeroes so use three curly sets, for 10k use 4 curly sets, for 100k use 5 sets, for 1m use 6 sets and so on. I used the time command to time the runtime of each run of the test.

Counting to 1000-zipped through in .006 seconds
real 0m0.006s
user 0m0.004s
sys 0m0.000s

Counting to 10000-very fast, completed counting in .246 seconds
real 0m0.246s
user 0m0.040s
sys 0m0.000s

Counting to 100000-fast, just about 3 seconds
real 0m2.756s

Counting to 1000000-slow, 29 minutes
real 0m29.918s

Counting to 10000000-squeezed the living day lights out of the CPU, RAM and Swap. It just prepped on and on, wouln't start running even after 30 minutes! The 1.5GHz CPU maxed out as expected. The 1.4GB RAM maxed out too. Started swapping after about ten minutes and was about to reach 1.2GB. Luckily I closed my Chrome windows and freed up over 700mb but it didn't help. CPU% dropped and stabilized but swapping continued and threatened to reach max again. It didn't start running so I gave up and exited after about 30 minutes.

GROUP I [Yahoo.com through Duckduckgo.com on the top of the box on the left]
This is my most favorite group as a developer of this search tool. Multi-search users need to type their keywords just ONCE and they can then click on the buttons of any of the first set of 16 search engines any way they like! Typing the keyword on every site is NOT NEEDED.

GROUP II [Lycos.com through Surfwax.com in the middle of the box on the left]

Then there is also a bunch of search sites that Multi-search can't get to work as with the first group above. Here you need to press a button to open it on the viewer on the right side, then type the keywords on their search bar. And repeat the same procedure if you click on another button from the second group again. Typing the keywords on every site IS NEEDED. Not perfect but okay I'd guess.

GROUP III [Google.com and others like it]

You can't see this group on the box on the left. This group won't let Multi-search bring up their search sites on the viewer on the right so we can use it as group I or group II. You need to go to their website from your browser and search there all by yourself. Remember however, that the world doesn't end if Multi-search can't access Google. Others can, and so there's a workaround here anyway. Use and be satisfied with meta search engines such as dogpile, metasearch, metacrawler and others that bring up results from major search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Yandex and Baidu.

In the last article, we discussed start menu customization and LHS taskbar tray customization. Let us continue with four more important tasks here - setting the System Prompt, Aliases, Rightclick-Open/With and Default Programs - four tasks that are useful to any Puppy Lucid510 Linux user at any time whether used at logon or after it.

1. SETTING THE SYSTEM PROMPT
When useful? At logon or anytime

Start a terminal [Startmenu-Utility-Urxvt terminal emulator].
See the pound sign[#]?
Now type

#export PS1=''

What happened? Pound's gone. Vanished. We are poor now, too bad, wait a second. Now type

ls

See the file list? Type

df

See the used, free space allocation display?

Hey, stop stop, where do you think are we going with this now?

Easy! Cool down! We just saw the effects of setting the system prompt to null a minute ago with
export PS1='' and got impoverished. Let us reset the system prompt with a better prompt. Type

Got the hostname!

Hostname and the username!

Hostname, username and the current working directory!

At last! This code gave us the hostname, userid, current working directory and our pound back! We are rich again now! But why is everything in black and white? Let's add some color to it and also thank a reference site on the net for sharing a variant of the line of code below we are building upon.

Note: In general, in any system where the user logs on using the bash, bourne and korn shells, the .profile file in the user's home directory is run first. In my Puppy Lucid510 Linux system, as I am the ONLY user on my system, I used the /etc/profile file to put this code in there even though it is a system-wide file. On bigger systems with many users, the individual .profile files in each user's home directory must be used instead!

JWhat's Bonus - Display US Holidays In The System Prompt!

Here's a little code block I came up with that you can append to your startup file [user's .profile or system's /etc/profile] to display the month, date and major US holidays in the system prompt. Thanks to a little oneliner I found on a reference site or forum on the net, we also get to colorize the system prompt and to display the hostname, username, and current working directory too!

What? Holidays in system prompt? Who'd want that? Everyone'll be home anyway!

Yeah, but for those who mess with their Linux systems all the time, it may make sense. Again you can add birthdays, anniversaries and important days to make it really useful even on regular days!!!

Requirement
The holiday prompt is refreshed only when the .profile or /etc/profile is run which is at every login/relogin or bootup/reboot. So, remember to put this line of code in a script and run it first thing everyday with cron.

For individual users run this line from a cron-scheduled script everyday at 00:01am

For all users run this line from a cron-scheduled script everyday at 00:01am
. /etc/profile

Now, let's make sure that the code block above works correctly!

1.Open the /etc/profile file. Copy the code block above and paste it at the end. Save it.
2.Open a terminal.
3.Set the date to January 1.
Press [Start menu], then [Desktop] and then [Set date and time]. Use arrows by the left and right of the month to go to [January] and set the date to [1]. Press [Ok].
4.In the next window [Set time tool], press [Ok].
5.In the next window [info], press [Ok] and wait for a few seconds.
6.Now, in the terminal, type
# . /etc/profile

If everything's fine we should be seeing "1,Jan-NewYear'sDay..." in the system prompt.

Here's the fun part!
You can accomplish lots of different things other than displaying the dull boring [#] or [$] symbol in the system prompt by modifying the code block above. For example, you can

That's it for the system prompt configuration, let us move to aliases.

2. SETTING COMMAND SHORTCUTS WITH ALIAS
When useful? At logon or anytime

Consider the Linux command "ls". Let us type the following at the system prompt.

#ls -lstrh

This command displays a time sorted, human-readable listing of files in the current directory with the latest files at the end. It would be great if instead of typing

ls -lstrh

every time everywhere we create a shortcut like

wouldn't it? We can then type
#l
at the command prompt easily every time! That's what we did in the first line of the alias command list above [See image above]. For a one-time run, we can create a session-expiring alias like this. [Note: My system also allowed me to use single quotes instead of double quotes!]

#alias l="ls -lstrh"

If we want to be more enterprising, we can put this shortcut into a persistent file that is run by default at every login. In Puppy Lucid510, this persistent config file /root/.bashrc has only one line pointing to

#. /etc/profile

and /etc/profile in turn is used to store all default login configuration parameters. So, let us open the /etc/profile file and put these lines at the end of the file. Since /etc/profile is run every time the /root/.bashrc file is run, which is at every logon, we're all set! [Note: Bigger systems with many users must use the .profile file at the user's home directory instead] Let's test it out real quick. First open /etc/profile with geany text editor.

#geany /etc/profile &

Let's type this line at the end of this file.

Let's save this file and run /root/.bashrc for our changes to take effect immediately.

#. /root/.bashrc

Once we have done the above we can then simply type 'l' at the dollar prompt from a terminal in any directory to view a neat, time-sorted and human-readable listing!

3. CREATING SOFTLINKS FOR THE ROX-FILER RIGHTCLICK OPENWITH/SENDTO
When useful? At logon or anytime

It's easy to customize the way we want to open different file types with different programs of our choice in Puppy Lucid510. For example, assume we want to rightclick on a html file and open it with Chromium, Firefox or Opera. This is what we need to do.

We have just created three softlinks for these three programs at the [/root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/SendTo] folder. Changes take place immediately so we can rightclick on a html file and select [OpenWith] to make sure we can open it with any of the three browsers mentioned above.

NOTE: The information below comes from the window that opens when we rightclick on a file or folder and choose [File] or [Dir] menu, then select [Openwith] and then select [Customize] at the bottom.

The [Send To] menu provides a quick way to send some files to an application. 
The applications listed are those in the following directories:

/root/.config/rox.sourceforge.net/SendTo
/etc/xdg/rox.sourceforge.net/SendTo

I'll show you your SendTo directory now; you should symlink (Ctrl+Shift drag) 
any applications you want into it. The 'Send To' menu may be opened by Shift+Menu clicking over a file.

Advanced use:
You can also create subdirectories called '.text_html', '.text', etc which will 
only be shown for files of that type. '.group' is shown only when multiple files 
are selected.

4. SETTING DEFAULT PROGRAMS FOR DIFFERENT FILE TYPES

When useful? At logon or anytime

What, you are not satisfied with a [Rightclick-Open/With] strategy? We can also easily configure a program to open a filetype by default whenever we click on it. Just run these lines from the commandline or from within a script

Now whenever we click on ANY html file it will be opened by Chromium. Just change it to Firefox or Opera if required.

5. BONUS TIP: INFINITE LOOP TO CHECK STATUS OF FILE COPY OR FILE DOWNLOAD

Whether we are copying a giant 1gb or bigger file locally, or downloading stuff over slow internet, there is an easy way to check progress from the commandline.

while true; do du /your-folder/your-giant-file ; sleep 20; date; done

First note the size of the source file before copying/download begins. Then run this command and see how it keeps updating the terminal with the latest file size every 20 seconds and so if the file size is the same several times, the download probably stopped with success or errors. We can press [Ctrl-C] to break out of the loop and check if the file has been downloaded successfully or copied fully and/or rerun the loop command if needed. The [date] command gives a timestamp to tie up the [file size] to. Change the [time interval] to repeat as needed.

Power Up Puppy Lucid 510 Linux - Two Tips To Customize The Start Up Sequence!

Puppy Start Menu - Add A New Menu Group

I have seen a bunch of Live CD Linux distros but when it comes to packing a ton of packages in a small size [Puppy Lucid 5.1.0-where I am still at-under 130MB; the latest Puppy Lucid 5.2.8 just 133MB, download from here], nothing comes close to Puppy Linux. Extendable for even more versatility and power with the dev package and with the ability to run from RAM without even a hard disk, we have most of what we need to run a decent family pc or laptop! Not forgetting the save files that help us keep our sanity by storing persistent settings across shutdowns, and the multitude of open source gems out there, there is hardly very little we'll miss unless we're sitting on the bleeding edge of computing. Let us consider two simple ways to pack even more punch to the Puppy startup sequence, first by customizing the Start Menu and secondly by customizing the LHS tray. Remember we are working with Puppy Lucid 510 Linux here. Don't squat somewhere in Arch Linux and complain if you find things missing or not as found here :)

I. CUSTOMIZING THE START MENU

We'll keep things simple and consider only how to add a simple new menu [JCMenu] with a few puppy programs and one of our own scripts between two existing menus [Fun] and [JWhatGKFJ-1], (see "Before" image above on the left). Remember that we can use the [< Separator/ >] tag to separate menus or menu items(programs themselves) just as we have used two separators in our [JCMenu] to separate three program groups (see "After" image above on the right). Assume that we have coded our stuff into the following block [Note:All tags below have been padded with the space character as the second character on the LHS and the RHS. Notice how we have used a menu label, a couple of image icons and a program group for our menu above.

MENU LABEL: The label is where we name our menu [JCMenu].

ICONS: For simplicity we are reusing existing Puppy icons games24.png from /usr/local/lib/X11/pixmaps for the menu and picpuz.png from /usr/share/pixmaps/ for the menu items.

PROGRAMS: Here are three ways we can run programs from the Start Menu.

1.For starting up most puppy default programs, we can just call them by name like this.

2.Programs such as htop that require the terminal for the whole duration of their run may need to be called like this.

II. CUSTOMIZING THE LHS TRAY ON THE TASKBAR AT THE BOTTOM

Let's look at how we can improve the LHS tray next to the Start Menu icon on the taskbar at the bottom by adding some more icons there. As you know, this is probably the best place to keep icons of the top few programs we run everytime day after day. This time we'll modify the /root/.jwmrc-tray file to add more items to the LHS tray. As usual, let's backup the current file before we start.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION!

A [space] character has been inserted after the first character and before the last character of some xml tags in the display code blocks to protect display and need to be removed before use if copy/pasted. For example,

from code display must have the spaces removed when used in xml source code.

Remember to use the bulk replace option in the text editor you use to save time and also to

prevent some angry cursing. For example, in Geany and gnome-text-editor I used this method to

remove the extraneous spacing in a few key strokes and a few seconds instead of individual

replacements that might have taken for ever. Make changes first in a fresh new blank editor page so you can transfer the text to the script after the editing is complete. Where it applies

below, remove the square brackets used for accent and to mark out the space character.

   Type [geany] leaving out the square brackets from command line or start it from [Start Menu]->[Accessories]
   Paste and select the text to change.
   Press [Ctrl-H] to bring up the replace box and click on [Replace All] to expand. 
   Type [< ] in the [Search for] input box.

[Repost] Reuse Used CDs - Make A Coffee Mug Wind Chime!

I've always admired and never stopped thinking about little toys that are powered by natural forces such as gravity, air and sun light. Anything that moves, swings, or dances for no reason is a favorite of mine [flowers, trees, windmill blades, toddlers above all]. So you can imagine how happy I was when I discovered an idea for an easy-to-do DIY non-stop wind-chime. This toy needs next to nothing. If you are a techie who loves coffee or tea and also natural sounds, then this will be your favorite toy, something you'll be proud of.

WHAT YOU NEED

1.A tall ceramic coffee mug or clear glass

2.A tea spoon or a small silver spoon

3.An used CD or a bunch of used CDs

4.Constant air stream from a fan or open window

WHAT YOU DO

1.Put the CD on top of the ceramic coffee mug.
2.Slide the narrow end of the tea spoon through the hole in the middle of the CD [The spoon should be short so it doesn't touch the bottom of the mug. The top of the spoon should swing back and forth facing the direction of the incoming air stream. The bottom of the spoon should tap on the inside wall of the coffee mug] Depending on the flow of air, the spoon chimes nonstop.
3.Put the coffee mug with the spoon facing an air source with a steady stream of air like a table fan, ceiling fan or open window so the chiming can begin.

REMEMBER

NOTE 1: Thirsting for a complete audio/visual experience?

Try a clear glass instead of the ceramic mug.

NOTE 2: Only have a long spoon but plenty of used cds?

Stack as many cds as you need to raise the height so the head of the spoon would swing back and forth without touching the bottom!

NOTE 3: Spoon too heavy and moves CD around easily?

Stack a bunch of CDs to make them stable. Possibly try gluing them.

NOTE 4: No chime, stops soon?

Move the CD or CD stack gently around to get the spoon to chime the best way it can.

NOTE 5: Had enough, need to stop?

When you are tired of the music, would rather not annoy others or if it's time for the next cup of hot java, just pull out the spoon for the chiming to stop!

NOTE 6: Want some health benefit?

Blow on it gently for a few minutes daily for a refreshing breathing exercise!

It's a big bad world of confusion and noise around us. Create an ambiance of quiet calm when you need it and also save the planet by reusing everyday objects like used CDs. Spend some time to assemble your own little personal chime that is waiting to be useful to you everyday of your coffee-drinking or tea-drinking existence!

@Font-face - There Is More To Fonts Than Font-Family!

GET THE SAME LOOK EVERYWHERE WITH @FONT-FACE. GUARANTEED!

Even if someone had the worst website in the world, people might still flock to that site if only it had a great-looking font scheme. However simple or sparse that website, if it had a clean font scheme and used plenty of white space in a smart way, it could still make a lot of people visit often. The white color has the amazing quality of bringing out the real character of any and every font especially at higher sizes. In the old days it was so easy to just get by with some basic fonts and the header and paragraph tags. Not so anymore. The web has grown as if on steroids over the past decade and things are not simple anymore. While configuring a good font for your website with the @font-face css rule may look complex and cumbersome, it doesn't have to be so. Definitely not if you choose to use the simple scheme described in this article. I have been using Puppy Lucid Linux5.1 for over a year now and I have come up with a shell script which discovers and displays all installed fonts on a Linux system by dynamically generating code for the @font-face rules in the style block in the header and also the code for the body text in a webpage you can view with your browser. It may even show you the simplest way to use @font-face rules in your own webpages to make sure anyone and everyone in the whole wide world would see the same font display!

NOW YOU SEE, NOW YOU DON'T

Don't you hate it when the text and image editors on your Linux system can display all installed fonts correctly but your web pages can't? It happened a lot to me on my Puppy Lucid Linux5.1 and that's the reason for this article. Even after I installed the fonts correctly and used body text with font-family in the tags, it still wouldn't show all fonts! If you guessed not using @font-face in the stylesheet with font-family and physical file location as the reason, you are web smart! And once I did it, it was like going digging and finding gold. All fonts sprang to life so spectacularly I couldn't believe my eyes!

FONT LOCATIONS AND INSTALLATION ON A LINUX SYSTEM

PUPPY LUCID5.1 LINUX

Step 1: Copy the ttf or other font files to /root/.fonts directory. You may also copy the true type fonts to the /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF directory.
Step 2: Run the fc-cache command to cache the fonts.
fc-cache -fv
Step 3: Restart your browser for changes to take effect.

OTHER LINUX FLAVORS [MAY VARY]

Step 1: Download and copy the true type font files to /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF directory.
Step 2: Restart your browser for changes to take effect.

NOTE 1. Soft Links
You may also keep the font files at any directory and create soft links to font locations like this:
ln -s /your-font-directory/your-font.ttf /root/.fonts
or
ln -s /your-font-directory/your-font.ttf /usr/share/fonts/default/TTF

NOTE 2. Puppy Linux Font Locations
I'm not sure, but the following information probably comes from the Puppy Linux documentation or the helpful puppy forums.

fc-cache -fv command caches fonts from these directories and cleans some of them at the end.

Try running the script on all the directories returned by running the command

fc-cache -fv. Trace soft links to their source files if needed.

NOTE 5. As Few Fonts As Possible

Use only the minimum-required number of fonts at your website as it may become unbearably resource-hungry.

Okay, so we now know how to install fonts on Puppy and other Linux systems. Let us go ahead and see how to use the @font-face rule in your embedded style sheet. First we will get the font location and loop to read one font at a time to generate the @font-face code in the head section and then we will loop one more time to create the code, this time for the anchor or paragraph tags inside the body of the web page.

The script below combines both steps to dynamically produce the list of all installed fonts on your Linux system in a web page.

INSTALLATION OF THE SCRIPT

GUI

1.DOWNLOAD SCRIPT and extract the file gen-fonts.sh at /tmp.

2.Change the first 2 lines of the script for font directory and the browser string

3.With a file manager like ROX-filer, right-click on the gen-fonts.sh file, and check the 3 boxes at the end to make all 3 executable

4.Click on the script to generate and view the list of installed fonts in your system.

COMMAND LINE

1.DOWNLOAD SCRIPT and extract the file gen-fonts.sh at /tmp.

2.Change the first 2 lines of the script for font directory and the browser string

3.Open up a terminal and type cd /tmp; chmod 755 gen-fonts.sh

4.Type ./gen-fonts.sh to run and view the installed fonts in a html file

ADAPTING THE SCRIPT FOR USE IN WEBSITES ONLINE

First, copy your font files to a directory on your server, such as public-html/fonts or www/fonts, both of which point to the same location.
Second, taking the code below as a sample , create @font-face rules for every font in the style block of the header. Eg.

To end, put your text within tags such as "a" or "p" in the body. Eg.

When we use fonts this way on the server hosting our website, everyone will see the same font on their laptop or pc even if they don't have this font installed. The only requirement is that their browsers must support the @font-face rule.

There has not been a whole lot of updates for several weeks since I am fighting all odds and keeping myself busy with adapting Font3dTemplates wordart program for Linux (You must take a look at some samples made from this online application to start with!). About:about - Your Secret Tunnel To Tons Of Browser-related Information

We all know about "about:blank". Have you ever thought about "about:about"? I didn't, till recently. It's hard to believe, but this is how it happened! While on a search for finding something humorous about "about:blank", I stumbled on "about:about" and couldn't stop being amazed at how much browser-related information I missed all my life without knowing about it. There can be very few browser-related commands like "about:about". Type it in the address bar in every browser for the ultimate collection of any and every configurable and read-only browser-related parameter, a lot of which we may not find in regular Edit->Preferences. Once I knew about this obscure command, I ran it through the three browsers I have on my laptop and collected text and screenshots of the various options of this powerful command. Other than the Chrome, Firefox and Opera browsers you see in this article, I'm sure every other version of every other browser on every other operating system will have it's own unique implementation of this command.

One little thing that attracted my attention is that when you click on options such as "about:flags" or type "about:flags" in the address bar, Chromium changes it to display "chrome://flags" etc. So, don't be alarmed to see this in the address bars of the four screenshots below. This happened only on Chromium and not on Firefox.

About:flags [Experiments such as for print preview and multiple profiles that can be enabled. Users are strictly warned to proceed at their own risk due to the experimental nature of these options].

About:memory [I found this to be very interesting. Displays memory allocated to every tab open. I was surprised to find that the summary on top displays memory used not just by the Chromium browser but also other currently-running browsers. [Opera and Firefox you see that I had running].

About:plugins [Another location to enable/disable plugins other than from Wrench(Settings)->Preferences->Under the hood->Content settings->Plugins->Enable/disable individual plugins].

About:version [Remember to grab the command line equivalent of however you started Chromium from here for use in your shell scripts].

3. FIREFOX-13.0 [Linux]

Firefox 13.0 has the highest number of about:about options, a whopping 25! Chromium 12.0 has 18 clickable and 6 non-clickable options. [The non-clickable ones are for debugging only, you have to type them into the address bar every time].

About:addons [Configurable addons manager to download addons on demand. This panel also has tabs for extentions, themes and plugins].

About:cache [Displays disk and offline cache device locations and content].

About:config [Change internal defaults at your own risk. Click twice to change or rightclick for more options. Has so many obscure options that this could be the theme of a whole new article!].

About:home [Main dashboard. Start here].

About:permissions [Permissions manager for mozilla and all sites. Manage permissions for passwords, cookies, popups, share location and offline storage].

About:memory [You can view a neatly-presented memory allocation map for Firefox processes in a tree view].

FINAL WORD

Browsers, there are a million but "About:about", there is only one. You don't have to be a digital ninja to try the experimental or debugging options of this command. Sick and tired of image and multimedia overload in everyday browsing and want to skip images for a while but need to read the text at the same time? Travelling and stuck with low bandwidth? Researching reference sites and need text browsing by choice? There may be a hundred and one reasons, but let us set out to find a few easy ways for text browsing.

1.GOOGLE SEARCH PAGE

Select [CACHED OPTION] from the pulldown menu at the end of the second line of every search page result and then click on [TEXT-ONLY VERSION] to view the text-only version of the page. If you know the address of the website, you can first type cache:www.website.com and then select the [TEXT-ONLY VERSION] from the top-right.

2.CHROMIUM 12.0[LINUX]

Select [DO NOT SHOW ANY IMAGES] radio button from the SETTINGS wrench with the tool tip "customize and control chromium"->[PREFERENCES]->[UNDER THE HOOD]->[PRIVACY]->[CONTENT SETTINGS]->[IMAGES].

Okay, having the newer browsers covered, let us spend the rest of the article
with the CLI[command line interface] of the slightly older Lynx Text Browser to
get to the text or html versions of a web page and also get lists of links within
the same page.

DOWNLOAD THE LYNX BROWSER

First download the lynx browser from http://lynx.browser.org. Lynx 2.8.7 runs
on Un*x, MacOS, VMS, Windows 95/98/NT, DOS386+. I use it with Puppy Lucid 5.1 Linux on my Toshiba Satellite laptop. Once we have downloaded and installed the Lynx browser, we can browse the text version of the websites on the web with the default program or we can also use the CLI to get things done from the commandline like we do in this article. Once we have the address of the web page, we can use the -base, -dump, -listonly and -nonumbers options of the lynx CLI to get things going. I am using the geany text editor on my linux system to view the results of the lynx command for this article. Use a text editor , location and filenames of your choice.

TYPICAL USES OF THE LYNX COMMAND

GETTING LINKS FROM GOOGLE SERP[Search Engine Results Page] FOR THE LYNX CLI USAGE SUCH AS ABOVE

CASE1: CLEAN LINK ON THE SECOND LINE BELOW THE TITLE LINE

If we have a good link with a clean format such as http://www.sqlhtm.com/About.htm, we'll have absolutely no problems but if we're going to depend on google search for links, we might get lucky or unlucky depending on what the SERP[search engine results page] deigns to provide us. Look at the image above and consider the two cases below. First we have some results with a clean web address on the second line of the result below the top title line such as the one below. We can grab this just like it is and use it without changes.

CASE2: MESSY LINK TO CLEAN UP FOR LYNX CLI USAGE

While an address such as the one above is what we want, oftentimes we run out of luck and end up having to rightclick on the title and select the [copy link
address] option to get a really messy google-formatted link with characters that
need to be cleaned up so the link is acceptable to the lynx command line deity.
To do this, we need to delete a portion at the beginning of the messy address,
delete another at the end, and also replace the code [%3A] with colon [:] and [%2F] with forward slash [/] in the reminder of the address.

EXAMPLE

Do you notice the three dots from hell leading to nowhere in the middle and also at the end? This is no good. So we'll rightclick on the top title link and select the [copy link address] option to get an equally-lousy-if-not-worse address below.

There, we got what we needed, a really clean lynx CLI-acceptable address!
Using this address in any of the several ways above, we can get what we want - the html or text version of the page with or without the links on the page!

REDIRECTS

If the link we are using is a redirect, then we may not get the text of the
page at once, but only an alternate link in the output of the lynx command. We need to run the same lynx command again with this redirect link and then we will get the required text source of the page.

FINAL WORD

While a picture may be worth a thousand words, it is nice to be able to be content with words for a change, at least once in a while, at least considering the useless, bloated, unhealthy or harmful images on the net! But dude, I know where you are headed right after reading this - right back to your G+s, pinterests and tumblrs, but really can't blame you. Who'd want to stay with text only other than those stuck with dial-up or slow internet?

Are Your Image Tweets Erroring Out? Stop The Fast Finger Syndrome!

PROBLEM

You managed to get that lucky, hard-to-get, once-in-a-blue-moon image captured on your cell phone. Or you just found a really funny or interesting image somewhere on the web and can't wait to share it with the world.

So you start your twitter session, press the image button from the tweet window to select the image from the hard disk and press the tweet button and are greeted by the "Error creating status" or the "tweeting a photo timed out" errors!

Not just once or twice, you have been trying a number of times always ending up with those darn errors!

Here is the fact: Text tweets almost always get tweeted at once except during severe server load periods. But image or media tweets add extra burden to the tweet with their size. A small image with a few KB size may get by easily whereas huge images and videos are sure to take a few seconds to a few minutes for the upload to server to complete! So, what now?

SOLUTION

Curb your enthusiasm, dude! Stop your fast fingers and try this first!

If your image tweets error out with the above errors, first select the image from the hard disk, WAIT A FEW MINUTES till the data transfer icon in the system tray stops blinking if you have one, which means that the image has fully been uploaded, and then press the TWEET button for a successful tweet! This applies to most image uploads on slow internet but may also apply to bigger image or video uploads even on faster bandwidth!

"Got slow internet and image tweets erroring out? Go slow, wait till the image has fully been uploaded, and then press the TWEET button!"

Why You Should Always Grep Carefully If Your Search String Has ">" In It.

It's Better "Quoted" Than "Naught"ed!

Behold the mighty little ">" symbol in a Unix/Linux grep command. If not quoted, it will empty the file being searched.

EASY EMPTY

If you've been on the Unix/Linux platforms for a while, I am sure that you'll remember this good old technique to empty files.

>test.log

This command nulls out the test.log file and is usually used to empty fat old error files and log files.

THE DANGER OF UNQUOTED ">" WITHIN A GREP COMMAND

While the command above is perfectly fine, accidents do happen especially if and when we are dumb, careless or in a big hurry! That's why we better watch out for the greater than symbol [">"] used carelessly in a grep command. If it is not quoted, it empties the file. Makes it 0 bytes. Zero. Zilch. Nada. Naught. Nothing! What a nightmare! There's no way out except with a backup. It doesn't matter it is a 1KB file or 1GB. There is nothing left in the file so you can try the "string" command or similar. How dangerous!

EXAMPLE

Let us prove this with an example. Look at the image above. We have a test file called hworld1.log and we are going to search for a string "echo hello >" within the file. First look at the file itself.

$cat hworld1.log

#!/bin/sh
#Beware the greater than symbol in a grep command. Always quote it!
touch hello.log
echo hello>hello.log
echo world>>hello.log
ls -l hello.log
exit

CORRECT USAGE OF THE GREP COMMAND

To search for the string "echo hello >" within the hworld1.log file, type

$grep "echo hello >" hworld1.log

and everything is fine. Check the image above.

DANGER! INCORRECT USAGE

Suppose you are in a hurry to go out and you accidentally forget to quote your > symbol in your grep command. Now it is not part of the search string you intend it to be anymore. The grep command looks for part of the search string [echo] in the wrong place [non-existent hello file] and the input file [hworld1.log] is overwritten with null instead! Never try

$grep echo hello > hworld1.log

or else the hworld1.log file is nulled out! Check the image above.

BACKUPS ARE NOT LUXURY-THEY ARE AN ABSOLUTE NECESSITY

It's always top priority to back up anything worthwhile on the pc/laptop regularly. Even with backups, it's never safe to use ">" in a grep command without quotes carelessly! Remember the tiny, little ">" can make a tiny 1KB file or a 1GB monster file empty in a second!

REQUIREMENTS

Tested on Puppy Lucid 510. Puppy Linux allows both single and double quotes within the grep command. Check with your Unix/Linux platform for details on how things work with regard to single or double quotes.

Oneliner To Display Filesize With Line And Word Count

It looks logical but have you ever thought of the file size as the total number of characters in a file?

I didn't, for a very long time!

This command returns the size of all files in a directory with line, word and character counts also! As we said just above, the character count happens to be the filesize also!

wc `ls -p|grep -v "/$"`|gawk -F " " '{print $1 "\t" $2 "\t" $3 "\t" $4|"sort -gk 1"}'

Let us break it down:

wc : Find line, word and character counts

ls -p|grep -v "/$" : List files in directory without directory information

gawk -F " " '{print $1 "\t" $2 "\t" $3 "\t" $4 : List lines, words, chars and file
names

sort -gk 1 : Sort the above on line count

Just remember that

there should be no spaces in file names.
there should be at least one file in the directory.

Works on Puppy Lucid510 Linux, may work on other flavors. Test it out for yourself!

You know what, I suddenly tripped on an idea to start a whole bunch of sites in a whole bunch of tabs - all at once - using a shell script! Really amazing!

What You May Be Missing

Are you one of the power users? Maximize your productivity by automating repetitive typing! We usually start the browsers manually, and type the addresses every time manually or use bookmarks to open sites-even those sites we can't stop visiting every single day of our lives such as the email sites, the ISPs, the social sites, the movie/tv sites and the devotional sites!

Even if you used a shell script, you may not be opening more than one tab at a time!

Even if some browsers such as the Chromium-browser give you the option to open a bunch of tabs when you open a new tab in the second session after exiting with a bunch of sites in the first, other browsers may not have that feature!

Tiny Oneliner. One-Click Wonder!

Wouldn't it be great to be able to start a bunch of sites in several tabs "at the press of a button" all at once by using a shell script? It is right here. It works in Chromium, Opera and Firefox on Puppy Lucid Linux5.1.0 and it should work with other browsers in other distros too!

Suppress "The Flash Plug-in Was Blocked Because It Is Out Of Date" Error

PROBLEM

I am using Chromium 12.0.742.112 (90304) on Puppy Lucid510 Linux and I used to get the annoying "The flash plug-in blocked because it is out of date" error [see image above] when I encountered flash content while browsing flash-enabled websites.

SOLUTION

Since I just wanted to suppress the error, [The proper solution obviously is to upgrade the plugin but I am trying live cds so I just want to live with as few installs/upgrades as required] I used a tip from Google Chrome support and started Chromium with the "--allow-outdated-plugins" option like this:

chromium-browser --allow-outdated-plugins "http://my-error-throwing-site.com"

and the error message simply vanished! If you have a similar error, remember this error could be generic so give this solution a try first on your other Linux distros before trying other solutions!

One day I noticed a little itchy lump on my arm. I looked harder and noticed a number of these tiny little lumps and bumps all over my upper body. I was mystified and terrified at the same time! Then I realized that these were the result of mosquito bite!

Top Ways To Stop The Bites

Mosquitoes seem to defy all known counter-measures such as smokes, vapors and rechargeable electric bats. Their whine is the most annoying sound in the world which is so unbearable. They creep silently on you when you have your eyeballs fixed on the screen of your PC/laptop, they suck blood so quietly you don't even realize it and they smear blood all over your pure white shirt when you accidentally crush them.

Futile Efforts: Day Time

Even if you cover all doors and windows with netting, they are smart enough to wait patiently near the front and back doors as if your doorway is the ticket counter and beat all human beings in entering the room the moment the door is opened. Just can't stop them!

My only wish is that it rained all the time around where ever I am because I have observed that mosquitoes go missing while it rains [they probably go on cruise vacations during rainfall!]. Not one in sight when it rains!!!

Life has changed a lot since I was a kid. I don't get to see any lizard catch a fly or mosquito these days however hard I look! Back in the 70s and 80s I remember them feasting on insects on walls to their heart's content!

Summary of Techniques To Fight The Mosquitoes

The SMOKE Technique: This is cheap but has average effect. Even if you buy a mosquito coil the size of the milky way galaxy, they'll still find some mysterious breathing technique that lets them keep on whining!

The VAPOR/LIQUID Technique: Probably the most effective. A little pricier but the most effective if you could keep your windows and doors closed. Mosquitoes have no chance, they flee or end up dead.

The BAT Technique: Rechargeable and so a lot more cheaper than other methods but require careful handling to keep them unbroken especially if there are small children around. Noisy but have such a wide hit area not even your hundred-year old great great grandma will miss a mosquito if she took a swing at it! Annoying as the sole method because you can't concentrate on anything useful, can't get anything done! Picking up the bat and running after a mosquito here and a mosquito there makes you distracted, angry and unproductive!

What Hit Me

My last haircut hit me like the "BIG BANG THEORY".

No, no, hold on. It wasn't that I was hit with Newton's apple, it was the bottle of shampoo that hit me. The shampoo that I used to wash my hair after the haircut. What's wrong with it? Did they make it syrupy, alcoholic, drinkable too? No. Not yet!

Shampoo Is Golden

Now, I've always used shampoo grudgingly as a "once-in-a-blue-moon", "ladies-special", "what's-so-special-about-it" kind of common item. Quite the opposite. Used with discretion, there is absolutely nothing like it to improve your looks and your self-confidence at the same time! So true you can stop buying shampoo for the image of the models on the bottle and start buying it for what it is worth. A ton of gold!

I remember a few of the things I loved while at my last job every single day of every year there, among other things: my morning routine of prayer, exercise, shower, coffee and my weekly routine of eat-out lunch and shampoo-hair Fridays. I absolutely loved it!

Rescue Your Trapped Cell Phone Image! Use An Upload Script!

Problem

You once had a Windows(XP+) pc/laptop and used the Nokia PC Suite [Windows only] to manage transfer of your files, images, contacts etc between your cell phone and the outside world. And then your hard disk crashed and took the Nokia software with it. Until the disk repair/replacement and/or new pc/laptop purchase you decided to take the Linux route to digital survival. You miss a lot of your comfort programs, your tried-and-tested shortcuts and routines but you've learned to accept life, one live-cd startup/shutdown at a time. Thank goodness you have fairly decent, if not better, replacements for any and every Windows tool from open source on your Linux pc, but there still are some sore points, the Nokia PC Suite, for example. It is Windows-only which means files and images on your cell phone are literally locked out if you are on Linux! And when your pretty niece comes calling about the birthday photo you took on your cell phone a few months ago, you're stuck.

Solution[*See Note Below]

Not to worry. There's a way out! With a mobile browser like UCBrowser and an upload script like file-upload.php you can solve your problem easily!

Just make sure that you have access to a web hosting account with cpanel or similar tools.

Then download and install a file upload script from the internet [I used the file-upload.php (file upload form) script from zubrag.com]. There may be others like it if you can't use this for some reason.

Now change the parameters in the script to point to your server:

destination folder
max file size
success url

If you don't use mysql database, you can comment out

the 4 db parameters
1. db_host
2. db_database
3. db_username
4. db_password
the table creation part
The lines between
# if (DO_LOG) {
and # // if (DO_LOG)

Start your mobile browser [I used UCBrowser-an amazing, feature-filled mobile browser] and type www.yourservername.com/file-upload.php to bring up the file upload page with file name input.

First press the [Browse] button to select the image from the cell phone [E:\images\...\yourimage.jpg], and press the [Upload] button to upload it to your server.

That's all! Unless you have errors you should have your cell phone image now on your server from where you can download it to your pc/laptop or upload it to blogger, flicker etc.

In Short

Nokia Pc Suite is a Windows only software. While on Linux you can use a file upload script to transfer your images or files from your Nokia N73 or similar cell phone to your Linux pc/laptop or to other websites like blogger, flicker etc.

Note

Keep this route to file transfer as a last resort. The other 2 options might be easier if you can get them to work instead.

Card Reader: Simply pull out the mini SD card and connect to it your pc/laptop from your card reader

This 6 part sequence [mm/dd/yy hh:mm:ss] of which the picture displays only 5, is a thing of a century, it only happens once every hundred years!
