Chalkboards are all the rage now as they are being used for wedding signages, menu boards for restaurants or even as home decorations! If you're a Pinterest fan like us here in Square Art, I'm sure you have been following all the beautiful typography and creative uses of chalkboard paint with glee. Imagine how happy we were to know that we can actually make our own chalkboard paint and in ANY COLOUR that we want?

We stumbled upon this DIY project by A Beautiful Mess on Pinterest (where else? :D) and cannot wait to try it out ourselves. Square Art currently sells white grout at RM8.00 for a 100gm pack. For this project, you will only need a tablespoon-full, so that means you can have more than one chalkboard paint to try on! Yay! Try it out today! :)

Mosaic Photo Frame for a Baby Boy

If you are a new mother like me, you would definitely know how precious time is. Since welcoming the arrival of my baby boy, my time has been largely centered around the feeding/pooping/sleeping schedule of Jared. So a lot of projects and me-time have been put on hold the last few months. But now that he's a little older and can amuse himself with his playthings at longer intervals, I find that I can now squeeze in some crafting time (with breaks every now and then when the baby calls).

So I would like to share a project that I've been meaning to do for awhile now - a mosaic frame for my baby. We took this picture of him sleeping when he was just a few weeks old. It's amazing to see how much changes have taken place in such a short time! Do enjoy this little tutorial!

Step 1

Gather the items and tools you will need:

A photoframe

A photograph to fit in the frame

Choose your mosaic tile colours. Blue seems to be the default colour for baby boys :)

These are the tools you will need: tile nipper (optional), square grid,
double-sided tape and some wooden stickers to add to the design.

I find that using a tweezer makes it easier to grab and stick on the tiles. Especially
when the tiles are as small as 5mm x 5mm!

Step 2:

Paste double-side tape on all sides of the frame.

Step 3:

Decide on your mosaic design. Think of these questions:

a) Do I want a conventional (uniform pattern and colours, even spaces) or fun design (no particular pattern, different tile sizes, etc.)?

b) Am I going to use grout? If yes, you have to leave ample space in between.

c) Does my design match my photo?

I decided on the unconventional, no particular pattern method. I already chose my colours so the next step is to decide how to put the tiles together. Because it's a picture of a baby sleeping, I didn't want it to be too funky so I kept it to muted blues and a neat, but not uniform, pattern. I also decided not to use grout as I liked how the black frame came out with the tile colours.

Step 4:

Start sticking the tiles onto the frame.

I started off by putting my tiles on the square grid. Then, turn it over onto your frame.

The square grid was also used for this and this projects.

Note: Remember the colours come out the mirror image of what you
first see on the square grid (because you have to turn it over).

Instead, I decided to take the easier route and used 2 tile sizes (10mm and 5mm ones) to create a design. This is my favourite method to mosaic. And this is how a finished section looks like:

It is okay to not have them perfectly straight - it adds to the personality of the design.

Step 5:

Keep on sticking and sticking! This is how the end result looked like:

Step 6:

Glue on some wooden stickers to add to the frame:

All done! My empty white wall now has a beautiful picture of my baby. Do one for yourself today!

Supplies Surprise!

It's been such a long time since our last post. We've got so much to update you guys! For starters, in July we participated in our first Supplies Surprise Bazaar organized by The Handmade Movement held in Bandar Sunway. It was a great experience as it was our first time joining an event where there were mainly craft suppliers. There were also a handful of handmade sellers as well so it was a great feast for the eyes to see what was on offer.

Here are some pictures to remember by!

LATE POST: Our last stint in 2011 at the Markets.

This post has been long in waiting! Below are the pictures of the last Crafty that we attended in Jaya One on 17th of December. It was a great outing and we had a little elf helper to join us too. As Christmas was around the corner, we showcased a lot of our ready-made frames for sale as gifts and also some Christmas-themed kits. Thank you to all who came by our booth that day!

So in our last blog post, we dropped some hints as to what surprises are in store for you this weekend. Here are the answers to the hints:

As a kid, my brother and I used to call McD's double cheeseburger the Double-Double Cheeseburger 'coz it seemed so huge to us then. But don't come finding cheeseburgers on our booth! What we meant is that we will be sharing the booth with a sister shop called DeejaiSupplies which will be selling all kinds of craft supplies. It will be a double-double seller booth! Keeps on giving

The gift that keeps on giving

Some of you read of the news of the Thailand flood that happened in the past few months which inundated about 1/3 of Thailand. Many people had lost their lives, homes and livelihood from the unpredictable waters and some are still suffering now. As part of this year's charity act, 10% of the sales proceeds received from this weekend from our sister shop Deejai Supplies will go to a direct fund for crafters and artisans affected by the flood. Please help us make this possible by passing the word and visiting our booth! Come get a gift that keeps on giving...

Trivia: Dee Jai in Thai means a feeling of happiness, or happy. So that's what we will try bringing to the flood victims.

Congratulations to our lucky draw winners! The email has been sent out on Saturday morning notifying them of it. We had 60 participants that day but only 20 qualified for a prize with total prizes worth RM285 to be given out. Markets @ Jaya One - from a different perspective

Last Saturday we participated in Markets @ Jaya One 10 under Crafty - the handmade and craft supplies section. Many of you may not know that Square Art is very much a family business, owned by a husband & wife team, packed by parents, brothers and sisters and the occasional craft booth tended by sisters and mothers. And last Saturday was no different, here is a snapshot of what Caryn, my sister, experienced in our last craft fair outing.

"Each time when Crafty comes around, there's always a sense of nervousness, making sure that our customers get the best. For a newcomer like us, it's always intimidating to set up the store amongst people who probably went through thick and thin just to be where they're at right now. But nonetheless, the show must go on. This time, I'm glad to have my mother who so willingly stayed from 10am to 6pm with me. From the carrying of stocks, to the setting up, to entertaining the customers and even to the point of packing up. It's good to have my mother there because she was a good buddy that kept me company when the crowd was slow.

One funny incident during the market was when a sudden rush of wind swept through the stores. One by one, things from each store fell like a stack of dominoes. It was a funny sight as it went on for awhile. I even had to stand like I was modelling for a photoshoot but in actual fact, I was trying to balance my stands and the displays. It was very funny indeed."

It's never too early for Christmas!

As for my mother, she was just contented talking to the people coming to the booth and observing the young people. It did make her feel younger again!

Hi everyone! I hope all of you are preparing to close the year in a big way. I simply cannot believe that it is October already and as I was counting off the months to December, I honestly did not know that it was less than 3 months away!

Back when I was 6 or 7, I used to do a countdown towards Christmas which always meant new dresses and shoes, and lots of presents! I used to have a McDonald's calendar colouring book and I usually X'ed out the dates leading towards Christmas. Fast-forward to the present day, even though I no longer have a McDonald's calendar, I still have the same excited feeling whenever Christmas is approaching! Oooh, presents! And never too early to start listening to Christmas carols! :D

So this year, we are preparing some new items specially for you this Christmas - a season of love and giving. Some of the kits are Christmas-themed, some of them are not. This year, if you are planning to give something to your loved ones, why not get them a DIY Kit to work on themselves? Markets @JayaOne - How to make the most of it.

It's happening this Saturday and thought I'd just pique some interest by writing a fun post about it. How to make the most of your weekend outing in Jaya One? Let me count the ways:

Get your favourite frappuccino with an extra shot from Starbucks to get you going through the day.
Bring a cutesy umbrella to shield you from the sun's UV rays and don't forget the sunnies.
Wear comfortable yet fashionable shoes, you'll be walking around a lot and in a fashionable crowd.
Dress to please (yet comfortably)! There will be photographers lurking around and you might just get your 5 mins of fame on Facebook.
BYOB (last 'B' meaning Bag!). Most shops do give out paper/plastic bags but what's better then doing your bit for the environment whilst shopping?
Bring friends along. You will be trying out items and who better to give you support then your close friends.
Take lots of pictures and tag, tag, tag!
Find out more about the shops you visit by talking to the owner and getting their name cards. Most of the time you can find more information about them on their blog or website.
Find out in advance which stores you'd like to visit so you can better plan your time. You can find out more on participating vendors on organizers' websites:

Squared! IKEA's MALMA mirror frame

Recently, a customer asked what she could do with her IKEA mirror frames which she bought recently. It was such an interesting conversation it brought me to experiment on some of them myself! I finally finished one and one more yet to grout. Still not sure what grout colours to use - should I use white/black or beige?

Here's how it looked like initially.

Sadly, the word "Love"didn't quite stand out as I hoped it would :(
