WSF Restructures World Agreements

The World Squash Federation has radically altered the process by which World Championships and Conferences are allocated.

Until now, member nations wanting to host have simply applied for the opportunity. The result of this has been no certainty that all regions of the world will have a share, secure a range of events over time, or be able to lay plans several years ahead should they wish.

The WSF has now introduced a new forward plan in which the five regions of the world have been allocated all the Federation's events and conferences right through to the year 2020.

In 2014, for example, Pan America will stage the Women's World Team Championship; while Europe will take the WSF Development Conference and WSF Federations Conference; Africa will host the Men's World Junior Individual & Team Championships (with the Women's Junior Individual Championship alongside); Asia will have the World Doubles and WSF AGM; and Oceania the World Masters.

In the following year, the 2015 Men's World Team Championship and WSF Referees Conference will be in the Pan American region; while Asia will host the Women's World Junior Individual & Team Championships (with the Men's Junior Individual); etc.

Countries interested in hosting an event or conference that has been allocated to their region will apply to become the choice of the region, and so be put forward to WSF for approval.

"It's a fairer spread, with more certainty - and better all round," commented WSF Chief Executive Andrew Shelley.

In an additional change of procedure, countries can no longer bid without specifying the actual venues and hotel, so that accessibility and suitability can be assured prior to acceptance.

15th Asian Junior Team Championships Jan 2011 - India strike gold after beating defending champions Pakistan

The Indian junior boys team created history when they downed arch rivals and defending title holders Pakistan in the 15th Asian Junior Team Championships held in Colombo, Sri Lanka to win this prestigious title for the first time in Indian squash history since the inception of the Asian Championships in 1981.

Playing to a packed crowd at the Sri Lankan Air Force base squash venue, the Indian players comprising Ramit Tandon, Abhishek Pradhan, Mahesh Mangaonkar and Vrishab Kotian rose to the occasion as they outmanoeuvred and out played the mighty Pakistanis.

The order of play for the day was 1-2-3.

Our no. 1 player and captain Ramit Tandon who had been untested so far confirmed that he is certainly the most improved Indian squash player in recent times. Playing Danish Atlas Khan the Pakistani no. 1, the match lasted 90 min and went the distance with Ramit displaying his amazing skills. Winning the first game 11 – 7 with his comprehensive finish shots Ramit was pumped up. He lost the 2nd game 6-11, but came back strongly in the 3rd winning it by the narrowest margins 11-9. Danish then took the 4th game 11-8, setting a tough 5th game ahead. The 2 played great squash and the score was neck to neck till 6-6, then Ramit jumped to a 9-6 lead. Danish then fought back to level the score and 9-9. The next two were blistering rallies with both players moving to every inch of the court. Ramit finally won the game 11-9 with a backhand volley drop.
It was a great match and the crowds were entertained to a high level of squash, which kept everyone glued to their seats until the very last point.
Major (R) S. Maniam, Consultant Coach - SRFI immediately after the match expressed “I have not seen skills at this level amongst any Indian players in the last decade.”

Abhishek Pradhan the no. 2 player was next on with Nasir Iqbal. As much as Abhishek tried running the 4 corners of the court retrieving many shots he could, in the end he was outplayed and lost 0-3.

The decider saw 2 lanky players in action, Mahesh Mangaonkar and Sadam Ul Haq.
From the onset Mahesh stamped his authority and did not give the Pakistani any hopes of winning this tie. Showing true class Mahesh romped home 3-0 as the elated Indian team jumped for joy.

“With this victory in hand, India now are the proud owners of 3 of the 4 Asian junior titles. 6 months ago, Ravi Dixit and Dipika Pallikal won the Asian Junior Individual Championship (Boys and Girls under 19 resp). Today we have won the Junior Boys Team,” said the jubilant Secretary General, SRFI – Srivatsan Subramaniam.

“This certainly augurs well for India squash, all the hard work put in by the players with the unvarying support from the federation and the government is producing the desired results” said Major (R) S. Maniam, Consultant Coach - SRFI.

“This is certainly a dream come true. I am lost for words to express my delight. Ramit was certainly the hero of the day; he has worked so very hard for this. It certainly is a great way to start the year,” said Cyrus Poncha, National Coach.

1. This year it is proposed to hold Hamdard Delton Squash Tournament from 22^nd to 25^th Jan. 2011. In case some matches are pending it can be extended till 26.1.2011.

The following players from Pakistan have shown considerable interest to participate in this tournament.

Mr. Gogi Alauddin has formerly been world No. 2 and had beaten a legendry Geof Hunt many times.

We are hoping that these players can come and participate in this tournament.

We are planning to change the format of the tournament and make it a handicap team event. We also propose that teams should have joint Indian and Pakistani players so that there is a lot of interaction comraderie and friendship. While the tournament would be mainly for the junior players, we are proposing that every team can have one senior player so that players can get to play with legends like Gogi Alauddin etc.

We are proposing that a team should consist of four players in which 3 will play in a match. The players will be designated as 1,2,3,4 and the No. 1 player of one team will play with the No. 1 player of the other team and so on. It will be a handicap event and handicaps will be given by the tournament committee which can be changed after each game. The games will be of 15 points best of 3.

Outstation teams will be provided boarding lodging in Hamdard Public School. As there is limited number of accommodation available, accommodation will be given on first come basis.

The Pakistani players will be given to each team by draw of lots.

Entries can be made for the full team or participants can enter singly and they will be given a team by draw of lots.

In each team 3 players will have to be of below 19 years of age and they can have one senior player.

The entry fee for participants not desiring boarding and lodging would be Rs.600/- per person, Rs.1500/- for a team of three and Rs.2000/- for a team of four.

For participants desirous of boarding and lodging the entry fee will be Rs.1500/- per person, Rs.4000/- for a team of three and Rs.5000/- for a team of four.

There will be a gala dinner on the 25^th Jan. 2011.

T-Shirts and attractive prizes will be given to the participants.

The last date for entry would be 15.1.2011 and entries have to come along with entry fee otherwise they will not be accepted.

The above is a broad format and there can be some changes as per decision of tournament committee.

Delhi Jr Team Trials: Results Day 1 - 16 october 2010

A competitive session of squash was witnessed at Day 1 of the trials today. Kids and parents all came forward to do their bit. Dr Bharatinder Singh, Chairman Selection Committee was there to mentor and guide the officials, motivate the players, give useful tips and also to play a couple of games with the top Delhi juniors. Lalit Advani, Arjun Khanna and Nikhil Pant...all Selection Committee members got down to preparing draws for different categories right at the very beginning. Sri Vijay Goel, President, DSA too came over to encourage the budding players. Sri Sharad Sharma helped out with managing the tournament desk while Puneet Singh volunteered to get things organised. Vivek Kumar gave a helping hand in conducting the trials. Special thanks are due to Dr Tarun Sahani and Amrit Mann for getting us the permission to conduct the trials at the NOIDA Center for Squash since Delhi Courts were unavailable due to CWG 2010.

World Squash Day 2010 theme: Take Squash to the kids & get new players in!!

The theme for this year's World Squash Day on Saturday 6 November is to encourage clubs and associations all over the globe to increase playing numbers.

So, on November 6th, the challenge for every club in the world is to attract:

20 new junior players, and
10 new adult members

World Squash Day is supported by the World Squash Federation (WSF), and Chief Executive Andrew Shelley says: "This is a wonderful idea to create an explosive worldwide rise in participation levels.

"Countries like Egypt are leading the way when it comes to producing wave after wave of fantastic junior players but the springboard for this is the sheer number of juniors at nearly every club in the country.

"If other nations wish to compete at the highest level then the starting point is to increase junior participation levels - as part of the main thrust to ensure that the lifeblood of our sport, the next generation, keeps expanding of course."

As leading squash players from all over the world arrive to compete in the Commonwealth Games in India, the plan for World Squash Day 2010 is to create a platform to encourage stars of the future.

World Squash Day founder Alan Thatcher, chairman of the Kent SRA in England, added: "Squash has a massive worldwide following with some 20 million players enjoying the game in more than 120 countries.

"Participation levels are increasing in a huge number of countries but here in the UK the game has suffered because of court closures. However, it has been heartening to see that trend being reversed in many regions.

"The single most important thing that we can do for the sport is to bring on a new generation of squash players to safeguard the future of the sport.

"Therefore it is essential that clubs and squash associations all over the globe get behind World Squash Day to produce a significant increase in participation levels."

Last year World Squash Day generated a massive global show of support for squash's Olympic bid.

This year clubs and federations can announce their activities on the event website www.worldsquashday.com

Thatcher added: "The website has a list of ideas for clubs to get involved and organise events to showcase our fantastic sport."

Commonwealth Games 2010 Boasts World-Class Squash Field

Led by nine players from both the men's and women's world top 20 rankings, the cast list for next week's Commonwealth Games Squash championships in Delhi will be world-class - with Malaysia's world number one Nicol David seeded to win the women's singles gold medal and England's Nick Matthew, the world No2, expected to take men's gold.

Players from 27 countries will compete in the two singles events which get underway at the superb new eleven-court Siri Fort Complex - which features an all-glass centre court - on Monday 4 October. Following the Gold and Bronze medal play-offs on Friday 8 October, the three Doubles championships (Men, Women & Mixed) will take place from Saturday 9th to Wednesday 13th October.

New medallists will be certain in the Women's Singles event - with no previous winners in the field, and after Nicol David finished only in fourth place in Melbourne in 2006. It was the 27-year-old from Penang's third successive appearance in the event following her debut in her home country in the sport's first appearance in the Games in 1998.

Nicol David, who celebrated her 50th successive month as world number one this month, is in sparkling form after winning a record-equalling fifth World Open title in Egypt earlier this month.

"After my win at the World Open in Sharm El Sheikh I'm looking forward to bringing that over to Delhi for the Commonwealth Games," said the Malaysian on the eve of her departure for Delhi. "The Games will be a completely different atmosphere and being part of the Malaysian contingent will be a nice boost to do my best out there for the country.

"The Commonwealth Games is always special and I will go all out for it!"

Nick Matthew is also enjoying the best form of his career this year after becoming the first player to win three PSA Super Series championships. But, after becoming England's first world number one for six years in June, the 30-year-old from Sheffield suffered a minor setback when illness forced him to withdraw from the British Grand Prix, the biggest event in Europe this year, in England earlier this month.

"I'm fully fit now and looking forward to being in Delhi," said Matthew as he joined his England team-mates for the flight to India. "I hear that the atmosphere in the England camp has been buzzing and we all can't wait to get out there and get amongst it now.

"On a personal point of view, it will be my second Commonwealth Games - and the first one was among the highlights of my career, so I can't wait to get playing, especially after missing the British Grand Prix.

"Hopefully the enforced rest has done me good," added the gold favourite.

Whilst a new gold medallist is assured in both the men's and women's events, Australia's David Palmer will be hoping to win his third successive medal after clinching Bronze in England in 2002 and Silver on home soil four years ago.

One his country's most successful players of all-time, Palmer celebrated ten complete years in the world's top 10 last month - and earlier this month rediscovered his former form by reaching the semi-finals of the British Grand Prix in Manchester.

Despite losing to Egypt's Ramy Ashour, the reigning world number one and the event's eventual champion, Palmer took positives from his performance: "It's given me encouragement," said the two-time World Open champion. "I haven't been able to play a match like that for the last four or five months.

"The Commonwealth Games is very important to me - and it looks as if I'm back in form. It's better late than never! "So I can go back home and be happy now.

"But it's going to be very tough in Delhi," admitted the 34-year-old fifth seed.

DELHI TEAM FOR PARTICIPATION IN ALL INDIA JUNIOR INTER-STATE SQUASH TOURNAMENT FROM 29th OCT. 2010 TO 2ND NOV. 2010

We had sent a circular on 17.9.2010 wherein we had asked all squash players desirous of taking part in above tournament to send their names to Delhi Squash Association.

A number of names have been received.

JP Open is taking place from 1.10.2010 to 4.10.2010 at Greater Noida. Most of the squash playing children are taking part in the above tournament.

It has been decided that a tentative team will be selected by 6.10.2010 by the selection committee consisting of Shri Bharatinder Singh, Chairman, Shri Vijay Goel, Shri Lalit Advani & Sri Nikhil Pant. (they can co-opt any other member if they so like) based on the performance at JP Open and the past performance of the children.

If any children who are not satisfied with the selection of the children made by the committee should inform Mr. Sharad Sharma by 10th October, 2010 and send a payment of Rs.250/- by way of Demand Draft in favour of Delhi Squash Association or by cash.. The Committee will then fix a date for a trial and trial will be done accordingly.

Delhi Squash Association will be conducting the Junior Delhi State Team Trial for Boys and Girls, U-15 and U-19
teams for the Junior Inter State Squash Championship to be held from 29th Oct to 2nd Nov 2010 at Chennai.

All players desirous of getting selected to any of the teams must send their entries to Delhi Squash Association.

India to host the Squash World Cup 2011

Delhi kids and keen parents could plan to visit Chennai.......!!

"The already strong programme of squash majors has been enlivened
today by the announcement that the SDAT WSF World Cup will take place
in India next year from 812 March.

Spearheaded by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT),
the biennial event will be held in Chennai in 2011, 2013, and 2015,
with the final rounds next year being played on an all-glass show court
erected at the Express Avenue Mall, the largest shopping complex in
southern India.

Sixteen national teams featuring top players from all over the world
will compete, with two men and one woman being the format. Favourites
to be vying for the title are expected to include Australia, Egypt,
England, France, Malaysia, Netherlands, and hosts India.

Thanks to the relentless efforts of World Squash Federation President
Mr N Ramachandran, the Tamil Nadu Government is contributing a total of
one million dollars for the next five years. In granting this
sponsorship, the TN Government spoke highly of the efficient and
professional manner in which the Tamil Nadu Squash Rackets Association
functions:

We are eagerly looking forward to hosting the worlds best squash
players in Chennai, said a delighted TNSRA Secretary General Mr
Srivatsan Subramaniam. The event next year will feature a prize fund of
$(US)125,000, with $(US)50,000 going to the winning team.

Enthusiastically welcoming the championship which will be played in his
home city, WSF President Ramachandran explained: "Not only is this
exciting event a great boost for India, with the opportunity of
watching top stars competing in the flesh and on TV, but the bigger
picture is that we have added an important international event to our
shop-window."

Endorsing this, WSF Chief Executive Andrew Shelley added: "We see it as
essential to work with the mens and womens Tours to maximise our
media impact and to provide a full range of world titles for our sport.

"The World Cup is the only event in the squash calendar in which we
have a single competition for both men and women. Having one which is
staged every other year, starting next March, is a major step forward."

The Junior Nationals entry form is available on www.indiasquash.com - The event is from 25 - 29 Oct. The Interstate championships are from 29 Oct – 2 Nov 2010. The closing date for the event is 20 SEPTEMBER 2010.

PLS NOTE

Players seeded top 4 and those who finish top 4 in each category will be required to undergo a radiological evaluation of age. In addition, the SRFI Observer has the right to order medical tests / dope test on any other player, if required.
Each participant will pay an entry fee of 250/- to The Squash Rackets Federation of India. A consolidated demand draft of the entry fee must be sent by each affiliated state associations / associate members payable to the Squash Rackets Federation of India at the time of sending the entry.
Entries must be sent to the Squash Rackets Federation of India only through the affiliated state associations of the Federation. No direct individual entries will be accepted. Entries can also be sent directly to the Federation through Associate members under section 9 (b) of the Constitution viz. Clubs, Schools, Colleges, or other organizations not specified.
For any accommodation requirements you may contact me. Hotel Marriott has offered us a special rate of 3,500 (nett) including breakfast for a double room and `4,000 for a triple room.

July –Aug 2010: UP State Open Squash Championship July 30th to 01st Aug 2010

The newly renovated Squash Complex in Noida Stadium was the host of one of the most popular squash events in the region over the weekend. The event saw the presence of all the top players in Northern India converging for the event with a record 358 entries in nine categories ( Women – 3 and Men -6 ) ranging from Under 13 to over 40 for men with representation from Allahabad, Varanasi, Kanpur, Bareilly, Dhampur, Chandigarh, Delhi and the NCR.

The event was held under the aegis of the UP State Squash Association (UPSRA)and was organized by the District Gautam Budh Nagar Squash Racket Association ( DGBNSRA).The 4 glass back courts complex with a wide viewing gallery within a stadium complex is an excellent facility and we must be thankful to Noida administration for having given these facilities stated Dr NK Pandey Secretary UPSRA.

The Noida Centre for Squash under the mentorship of Lalit Verma, Wg Cdr Bir Singh & nationally acclaimed squash coach Puneet Singh is attracting young talent even from Delhi and many of the children are seeded among the top 8 in the country including two national champions in a short span of less than two years stated Dr Tarun Sahni President of the DGBNSRA

The Mens & Womens Final was a closely fought event followed by the Prize Distribution carried out by Mr Pramod Aggarwal IAS Director Sports MOS&YA, Shri CB Singh Deputy CEO Noida and Dr Bharatinder Singh Chief Medical Officer for the Commonwealth games.
