Cancer Warrior

I have cancer and I'm gearing up for a fight.
I've decided to share my battle here for a few reasons. First, I believe prayer is the most powerful weapon there is and I want to give people an opportunity to pray with and for me. Second, I've learned a whole lot since my recent diagnosis and I want to share some of this newfound knowledge; knowledge is power and there might be others out there who need some empowerment about this type of cancer. Third, when you get a cancer diagnosis things start happening really fast and I want a place to try to help keep track of what's going on. Last, Squidoo is my "home away from home," where I live online. What better place to share my life, even the bad and scary parts, than here?
Just a note. If I write "my cancer" on this page, it's just for convenience. This is not my cancer. It may be in my body right now, but I don't want it and I'm not claiming it as my own. So please excuse the personal-sounding references to what is now my biggest enemy.
Let's proceed.

November 5, 2009: This lens was awarded a purple star today! For those not familiar with Squidoo, that is one of the highest honors a page here can receive. Thank you, Squidoo, and thanks everyone for all of your visits, comments, and support!

Making Fun of Sarah Palin - Has Political Humor Crossed the Line?

Making fun of political candidates isn't anything new and with the arrival of Sarah Palin on the scene, the comedians are out in full force. It's expected, but is it right? What about when the families of the candidates are included in the so-called humor. Is that still okay and expected, or is it a bit over the top? Is it political or is it getting just too personal? What if McCain and Palin actually win the election? The images people are creating now will be of a sitting vice president! Is it right or is it wrong? What do you think? UPDATE: This page was created during the 2008 presidential campaign when Sarah Palin was the Republican vice-presidential candidate, so most of the "humor" you see below is from that era. However, humor-in-questionable-taste with Sarah Palin and her family at the butt of it has resurfaced on early summer 2009 late night television. It looks like David Letterman has really stuck his foot in it this time with some questionable comedy in his monologue earlier this week following Governor Palin's trip to New York City with her family, specifically her trip to the New York Yankees baseball game with her 14-year-old daughter. So, the question presents itself once again: has political humor crossed the line? Would Letterman have made jokes about a liberal politician or a democrat? We're up for more debate! Read on for some (mostly tasteful) Sarah Palin humor in words, pictures, and song, watch the Letterman apology video, then leave your opinion in our duel module or in the guestbook at the bottom of the page.
Thank you Squidoo! Lens of the day recipient November 3, 2008, for Making Fun of Sarah Palin - Has Political Humor Crossed the Line?

Looking for good music and a great time? If you're in the Fort Smith, Arkansas area, check out Mr. Cabbagehead and the Screaming Radishes, the mid-south's favorite band! Enjoy Ricky Young's vocals along with host and bass player Steve "Bubba" Carter, Richard Carter on alto sax, Tommy Cunningham on lead guitar, Mike Lenzini's smooth vocals, trombone, and flute, Ronnie Thomas vocals and keyboard, Steve Clark vocals, sax, and trombone, Larry Matthews with vocals and on drums, Harley Vinsant vocals and bass, and Josh Hice on trumpet. The Cabbageheads are a busy band, performing up to 100 times a year in the Fort Smith and surrounding area as well as adjoining states. They're a favorite at local fundraisers, civic and corporate events, and even weddings if you're lucky enough to book them far enough in advance. Locals count on Mr. Cabbagehead and the Screaming Radishes for entertainment at the Mayor's 4th of July celebration in Fort Smith every year. Now in their 25th year, the band is certified by the Arkansas Arts on Tour Commission and the Mid America Arts Alliance [MAAA] and in 2007, Mr. Cabbagehead and the Screaming Radishes were inducted into the Old Town Hall of Fame in Fort Smith.

Local Fireworks Displays and Fireworks Pictures

Most large cities and many small towns celebrate July 4th with a huge fireworks display. Large displays are fabulous, but expensive. Sadly, in 2009 some cities had to cancel their traditional annual local fireworks display, but many people made do with their own displays thanks to local fireworks stands. Others simply drove to the next closest town to share in that community's traditional fireworks display. Many people who can't get out or choose not to fight the crowds watch some of the largest displays on TV. The Boston Pops celebration on the banks of the Charles River is usually televised, as is the Washington, D.C. fireworks display on the mall, accompanied by the National Symphony Orchestra. It's an annual tradition for our small-town family to cap off our Independence Day celebration by driving to the nearby "big city" to attend the fireworks display there. While this event usually falls on July 4th, weather conditions sometimes cause delays, as I'll explain below. Read on for more about local firework displays, including some great pictures of fireworks, and find out why you CAN have fireworks even if it isn't the 4th of July! Of course New York City has fabulous fireworks displays every year. Click here to buy this "Grucci Fireworks Light the Sky Over the Statue of Liberty" photographic print.

When my boys turned 7 and 4, a dear friend gave them each one of the best gifts they’ve ever received. They were capes, homemade capes made from a silky king-sized bed sheet she had picked up at a yard sale. Perfect props to help them use their imagination. The capes were copper-colored and trimmed with colorful binding, making them rather exotic-looking – and perfect to use to play dress-up. Over the years, the capes were used to turn my boys into Batman and Robin, two of the three wise men, and many more characters, most ones that they invented, characters too numerous to count. My little Batman and Robin are all grown up now. The little characters they were have turned into wise young men and I truly believe that the opportunities they had to use their imaginations contributed to the wisdom that they exhibit today. Creative make-believe play became an important vehicle for them to learn about life and, indeed, to learn how to be men. Read on to find out how I believe that happened and why, if you have little boys (or girls), nurturing their imaginations with creative play could be one of the most important gifts you give them as they grow up.

I love that the price on the Kindle was just reduced to $259. But I'm fair and I believe in free speech, so I want to know what you think. So, which is it, the Kindle or the Sony?
The Voca People

In their own words: "The Voca people are 8 friendly aliens from the planet Voca, a musical planet that has no verbal communication but use vocal expressions only. They have heard the music from earth for decades now and with their imitation abilities they have decided to pay a one evening tribute to humanity and to perform the songs they love as musical- gratitude." Frankly, I think they're stretching it a bit about the planet Voca (who's heard of that place?), but their performances do pay wonderful homage to great music that everyone recognizes here on planet Earth. Actually based in Israel, The Voca People group consists of five men and three women with amazing voices. They use those voices in a phenomanal a cappella method, creating not just music but vocals that imitate the sounds of drums and other musical instruments, creating an awesome blended sound in a humorous and entertaining way. In other words, they put on a great show for their very appreciative audiences. Browse on through the page, watch their video and let us know what you think of The Voca People in the poll and/or in the guestbook below.

Going Rogue: An American Life, by Sarah Palin

Good news for Christmas shoppers. Publication of Sarah Palin's memoir Going Rogue: An American Life has been moved up to November 17, 2009. Just hours after announcement of the book's publication date, Going Rogue shot to #1 on the Amazon.com bestselling books chart. The former governor of Alaska and 2008 Republican vice presidential candidate has been busy working with collaborator Lynn Vincent to write the book since resigning as governor on July 26, 2009. Original target for publication was Spring 2010, but the decision was made to release the book early to take advantage of Sarah Palin's popularity, which should carry nicely through the holiday shopping season. Unfortunately for my fellow Kindle owners, the ebook format will not be released until December 26. Planning to read the book? Preorder a copy below then chime in with your opinion of Sarah Palin. Love her or hate her? We want to know.

Amazon Kindle DX Big Screen E-Reader

After months of speculation, the new, big-screen Kindle DX from Amazon.com is here! On Wednesday, May 6, 2009, Amazon.com announced its latest version of the popular Kindle wireless reading device and started taking orders. The Kindle DX is now in stock and shipping, to very good reviews. The new Kindle DX is designed with a much larger, 9.7 inch screen (compared to 6 inches for Kindle 2), very newspaper and textbook friendly. In fact, the big-screen Kindle is being used at several universities by fall, preloaded for students with information for some selected classes. The DX is also very business document friendly and includes a PDF reader, so its market certainly goes far beyond that of college students. Check below for more information and details, including Kindle DX pictures.

You've made a lens. That's great! Think you have a finished product on your hand? Well, you probably don't. Around here, we like nice, well prepared fresh squid! It's very important to keep your Squidoo lenses updated in order to keep both your lensrank and your search engine rank rising, but just how does a lensmaster accomplish that and keep on building lenses? Based on a previous blog post, below are six quick ways to update a Squidoo lens. Try to do one or more of these updates on a few of your lenses daily, if you have time, or at least weekly. Keep your lenses fresh to keep that lensrank rising and to keep the search spiders happy. Not enough information? Still have questions?

Is your Siamese sad? Tabby troubled? Burmese bored? If your cats need entertainment, it's time to turn on the bird movie! That's what we affectionately call the DVD that we play for our cats when they are bored and need a little outdoor entertainment, indoors. Oreo and Dandy are inside cats who have never partaken in the pleasure of the pursuit of winged prey. They're certainly attracted to birds, though; that's obvious when they watch them through the window. So, what would they do if we presented them with a nice, long video of birds and squirrels cavorting on the TV screen? Take a look and see what happened.

Loco Moco, A Traditional Hawaiian Breakfast Food

Call me crazy, but I love loco moco! Loco moco is the name of a popular breakfast meal served in restaurants in the state of Hawaii. It's a true breakfast in a bowl, a meal high in protein, perfect for storing up energy before hitting the surf (or school, or even the office)! I'm not a surfer, but I know a thing or two about breakfast - and this is definitely an unusual breakfast food, at least in all places besides Hawaii. Turns out that back in 1949 a group of guys requested that the owner of their local favorite restaurant in Hilo, Hawaii, create a cheap meal for their breakfast. They requested a bowl of rice with a hamburger on top, covered in gravy and crowned with a fried egg. Their wish was her command and the rest, as they say, is history. The breakfast dish was so crazy they decided to call it "loco." "Moco" made a nice rhyme and loco moco was born. These days you'll find loco moco on the menu at many eateries in Hawaii and it's as popular as ever. If you can't make it to Hawaii, you can do as I do and duplicate the dish at home. My version features brown rice, although the original has the sticky, white variety. If you prefer vegetarian, choose a veggie burger. If you can't do breakfast without ham or bacon, toss them in instead. Oh, and don't limit loco moco to breakfast. This makes a great lunch or even a nice, easy supper meal-in-a-bowl. No matter how you stack it, loco moco is a great-tasting, very filling, totally comfort food meal. I love it!

No-Bake chocolate oatmeal cookies with peanut butter is a favorite recipe, one that nearly everyone loves. The recipe is quick and easy to prepare, great to take to a cookie exchange or give as a gift, but if you're planning to give them away, be sure to make an extra batch for your own family; as rich as they are, they won't last long! Sending cookies to a soldier, Marine, or sailor overseas? These are a perfect choice. Despite the fact that they're chocolate, they do well even when sending to Iraq (think desert heat). I've sent multiple batches to my sons and they've always told me they arrived intact, no problem at all. Just be sure to send plenty so they can share with their buddies. If you're like many people who have tried this recipe but something always seems to go wrong (sticky cookies, too soft, too dry), look below for my tips and secrets for making the perfect batch. Enjoy!

One of my favorite summer drinks is Cherry Limeade from Sonic. It's a cool, refreshing drink, guaranteed to tickle the taste buds with its limey-sweet flavor and to cool you off on a hot, summer day. Before our family moved to the mid-south in the early 1990s, I had never seen or heard of a Sonic Drive-In. On a break during our house-hunting visit, though, our realtor pulled in to Sonic, treated us to a Cherry Limeade and it was love at first sip. You can imagine my delight when, years later, I ran across a Sonic Cherry Limeade recipe. Now I can make my own at home! Whether there's a Sonic Drive-In near you or, especially, if you've never had the opportunity to enjoy Sonic, stick with us here and learn how to make Sonic Cherry Limeade. It's easy and the whole family will love it! P.S. Looking for Sonic's program to help teachers?
Squidoo Changed My Life! (Has it changed yours?)

April 2009. Happy anniversary to me! It's been two years now since I got started on Squidoo. Wow, what an outstanding ride it has been! Since I've been a lensmaster on Squidoo, I've learned to think differently from the way I thought before. My powers of observation have totally changed - and definitely for the better. Everything that I hear or see now becomes or reminds me of an idea for a lens. I keep paper and pen handy all the time to jot down ideas. Why, I even asked for (and received) a mini voice recorder for my last birthday to record my thoughts when I can't write them down fast enough. That big blue lens has really been working its magic on me! Why, sometimes when I look down I expect to see orange tentacles typing on the keyboard! Oh, did I mention that I'm making money on Squidoo, too? It's true! In my two years on Squidoo, countless dishes have remained undone. Countless songs have remained unsung. Countless dreams have remained, uh, undrumd (who has time to sleep?). Yes, I'm a different person now than I was a year ago. Has Squidoo changed your life, too? Think about it, then write about it in the audience participation module below. What? You're not a Squidoo lensmaster yet? We can fix that! Sign up here and let your wild ride begin!

Who is Sonia Sotomayor, Obama's First-Ever Nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court?

In May 2009, President Barack Obama selected federal appeals judge Sonia Sotomayor as his nominee to become the next justice of the United States Supreme Court. On April 30, 2009, justice David Souter announced that he intended to retire from the court at the end of this year's term (the term runs from early October to late June or early July). This was President Obama's first opportunity to affect his influence on the court with the appointment of a justice likely to be hold a view of law similar to his own. As expected, Obama's choice was a woman since only one female justice currently sits on the court. Through the summer of 2009, hearings were held in the United States Senate as debate raged about Sonia Sotomayor's qualifications, although her ratification seemed sure. Indeed, she was approved and was sworn in August 8, 2009. What is Justice Sonia Sotomayor's background? What process does a Supreme Court nominee have to go through to become confirmed as a justice? We will answer those questions and explain more about the Supreme Court on this page as well as current tweets from Twitter on now Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor.
Collecting and Organizing the Best Recipes on Squidoo (Add yours!)

I love to cook and really love collecting and trying new recipes. I've been sharing a few of my family's favorite recipes here on Squidoo in the last few months and have more recipe lenses in the works. In order to organize my recipes and to provide a cookbook of sorts, I decided to make this recipe lensography, arranged by category. Since I love collecting recipes as much as I love preparing them, and since some of the best cooks in the world are lensmasters on Squidoo, I've provided a section below where you can add links to your recipe lenses and, wow, I've collected a bunch of great ones! Add as many of your recipe lens links as you like, then feel free to include the plexo on your own lenses and encourage others to participate. We have wonderful cooks on Squidoo, so what a collection we'll end up with! Thanks in advance for your contribution and, just maybe, my next favorite recipe of all time! Happy cooking, and happy eating!

He lives at the North Pole.
He raises reindeer.
He wears a red suit and sports a white beard. He's jolly. He's fat. A merry, old elf.
He's making a list, checking it twice.
He's coming to town. In a sleigh. Must be Santa, Santa Claus. (And, oh yes! He is real!)

(I knew you'd ask.) Jack turned 95 on September 26, 2009, and is going strong! I'm old enough to remember him leading workouts, watching him on a small black and white television set with the ubiquitous jumpsuit and ballet slippers. I remember his shape, the very wide shoulders and very narrow hips. I was too young to fall in love, but I was not too young to be impressed. Jack LaLanne invented fitness, or at least brought it to the masses, and he's been talking about it, writing about it, and practicing good fitness and health habits for nearly 80 years now. Do you remember Jack as I do? If you've ever heard of him you probably do. Although the TV has been in color for decades now, Jack still shows up on the screen from time to time and has hardly changed a bit.

Not as strong as you used to be? Have a touch of arthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, or another disability? If you ever have a problem opening jars in the kitchen, you need the Black & Decker Lids Off Jar Opener. Used to be when I had a tight lid to open I, damsel in distress, just called, "Oh, Hero, I need help!" and one of my strong teenage sons would happily come to my rescue. But when they grew up and left home, taking their muscles with them, the task of opening those pesky tight-lidded jars was left to me. My husband could handle them, but he wasn't always available. Truth be told, neither of us has quite the strength we used to have and, in fact, I have a touch of arthritis that affects my grip. Re-enter one of my heroes. A few Christmases ago I opened a gift from one of my sons and pulled out this Black & Decker electric jar opener. What a thoughtful gift! It's a great addition to my countertop of useful kitchen gadgets, it works great, and I love it! No more banging tight jar lids with a knife handle. No more searching for the rubber round 'tuit opener that didn't help much anyway. No more changing the menu because I can't get the silly jar open! Instead, I plug in the Black & Decker, insert the jar, and I'm on my way. It's true. The Black & Decker Lids Off Jar Opener is my new kitchen hero!

What do you think of when you hear "April 15th"? Unless it's your birthday, chances are you think of the dreaded day that the annual tax return must be filed and the dreaded taxes must be paid. The day that the post office stays open 'til midnight. The day before the tax accountants get to take a day off for a change. Nobody looks forward to paying taxes, but it's something that has to be done. The good news is that the FairTax plan makes it easy to pay taxes and, most importantly, makes paying taxes fair for everyone from every socioeconomic group in the country. Skeptical? Then read on. We'll provide you with the basics then give you resources where you can find out more - and find out how to support the FairTax, this simple but comprehensive plan to abolish not the 15th of April but the 16th Amendment and the IRS as we know it.

In fact, some of the best tweets on Twitter are about cats and dogs. Or just cats, or just dogs. I've collected some of my favorite tweets about cats and dogs below, followed by more tweets just about cats, and still more tweets just about dogs. Tweet your thoughts about cats and dogs (or cats, or dogs) at the bottom of each list. If you love cats and dogs (or cats, or dogs) then you just might enjoy this lens. And if you have something to tweet about the subject, add yours to the list below and Twitter will take it from there. Woof! Meow! (You know that the cat always has to have the last word.)

Are you an eBay seller? Have a Bonanzle booth? Sell books or other merchandise on Amazon.com? Do you need help promoting and marketing your online retail business? Then you've come to the right place. We're here to give you tips, ideas, and suggestions about using Squidoo to help get visitors to your sales sites and, as a result, make more sales. This lens (that's what we call pages here on Squidoo) was created to complement the online radio show "The River, The Ranch, & The Bay" but you don't have to listen to the show to benefit from our tips. The show is presented weekly by two experienced eBay sellers, Kathy Simpson (katskloset) and Beth Cherkowsky (depressionglasswarehouse). Both have now branched out into other selling venues and offer their insight and expertise, as well as that of their regular guests, on their weekly radio show, free to anyone who would like to listen and learn. More details about how you can tune in are presented below. Ready to broaden your horizons? Get set.
Weird Remedies, or What else Preparation H, Duct Tape, Soap (and more) Can Do for You

The treatments we're going to talk about aren't quite as weird as the picture shows (in fact, nowhere near that weird), but they're kind of unusual. Thing is, they work. At least they work for some people and who's to say they won't work for you. Reports of success with alternative uses of products such as Preparation H and duct tape are anecdotal, but we think they may be worth a try. In fact, we've tried some of these ourselves and have been surprisingly pleased with the results. So, read on and maybe you'll find a rather nontraditional, if not weird, "cure" for something that ails you. If so, or if you know of other weird remedies, I hope you'll leave us a message in our guestbook near the bottom of the page. Disclaimer: The information presented here is for informational purposes only. Consult your physician before doing anything really crazy to yourself.
Sharing My Faith

I answer to many names. I'm Susan, of course, as well as Honey, daughter, granddaughter, sister, aunt and, especially, "Mom!" If you know me online, likely you know me as Susan52 or perhaps my52cents. All of those names have special and significant meaning to me, but the name that is the most important, the one I take most seriously, is the name Christian. Although I don't talk about my faith much, that does not mean that I am in any way ashamed of my Christianity. Indeed, I am humbled to be a child of the King. Simply, I prefer to practice my faith quietly and, instead, demonstrate the qualities of Christianity by my actions rather than by bold declarations. Not that there's anything wrong with bold declarations of one's faith; that's just not my style. In fact, I feel that by proclaiming my faith here I may be setting myself up for scrutiny that might get in the way of my quiet witness, but that is a chance that I've decided to take. Jesus said, "Seek and ye shall find." I believe that at this time in our history more people than ever are seeking truth; indeed, the truth that will set them free. If you're seeking, perhaps you found this page for a reason and perhaps my quiet witness, presented on this page, will help you find the Truth that passeth all understanding so that you, too, may answer to the name Christian.

Pink Pickled Eggs Recipe

Easter at our house, since I was a kid, has always included pink pickled eggs. They're fun, they're easy to make, they're pretty, and they taste delicious! In case you're wondering, pickled eggs don't really taste like pickles. I'm not sure how to describe what they taste like, but "tangy" comes to mind. If you're not sure that you'd like them, pick up a can of beets at the store, dedicate a half-dozen eggs to the cause and give them a try. It'll be a fun experiment and you might end up loving the taste. Follow the simple instructions below. There's a photo gallery, too, so you can see how the eggs look as they progress through several days of pickling. I think they're best at day four or five (when they're really more purple than pink) so if you're planning these for Sunday dinner, start them on Tuesday or Wednesday. Enjoy!

She was born on June 5, 2008. She's a puppy in this picture, but now she's over one-year old! She's Daisy, our yellow Labrador retriever. We got her when she was six-weeks old. I didn't want a puppy, didn't want to go through the chewing and the housebreaking, but it didn't quite work out that way. Our friends got a lab who happened to meet a boy lab and, as nature would have it, Daisy and her seven brothers and sisters were born. I had my eyes and ears open, looking for the perfect adult rescue dog, but these little yellow lab puppies needed homes, too, and the rest is history. History in the making, that is. This lens is about Daisy, making history at our house.

Known on Squidoo as Susan52, I'm a wife and a mom, a baby boomer, a writer and editor, and a busy businessperson who's still trying to figure out what she really wants to be when she grows up. As for the 52, well, let's just say it was a very good year, especially for my mom and dad. It's also two shiny quarters and two bright pennies, which can take a girl a long way from home if she works as smart as she works hard. This bio/lensography is about me and mine, and especially about my lenses on Squidoo. I'm especially proud of the honors I've received as a lensmaster, a few of which you can see here. Thanks so much for visiting my lenses!

It's for real. It's not a trick or an illusion. The man you see is just moments away from being propelled through the air from the barrel of this huge cannon. We have pictures so you can see for yourself that it's true. Is he crazy? Is he a fool? Why would anyone allow themselves to be shot out of a cannon? Is it safe? How does it work, anyway? Read on to learn more. Find out about the first human cannonball (a young girl in a spring-loaded cannon), about human cannonball circus acts from the past, and about the current distance record holder, whose son you see here preparing for blastoff at a recent performance.
Sonic Drive-In, My Favorite for Fast Food and Fun

It isn't fancy, it isn't at all exclusive, but Sonic Drive-In is one of our very favorite places for a quick, delicious meal, for a cold drink to cool us on a hot, summer's day, or for a great ice cream treat when we're in the mood for something sweet. Sonic Drive-In is headquartered in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, but has locations across the country, from sea to shining sea. Our closest, and favorite, location is a quick five-minute drive from our house. There are Sonic Drive-Ins in 35 United States and one in Mexico, so hopefully there's a location near you. If not, be sure and look for their colorful "retro future" drive-ins when you're traveling. Whether you're in the mood for hot, crispy, thick-sliced onion rings or for a slushy, flavorful drink that will cool you from the inside out (watch out for brain freeze!) then you must drive in to your closest Sonic location. Want to know more about Sonic and why we love our neighborhood Sonic Drive-In? Read on. P.S. Looking for Sonic's program to help teachers?

Ever wonder who invented the typewriter? Or do you think much about typewriters at all? Chances are, most of us take for granted the predecessor to the modern keyboards that we use today on our home and office computers, our laptop computers, and even on our phones. These days, just about everybody types to some extent either on a computer keyboard or just sending text messages to their friends. So, whether you realize it or not, typing and typewriters actually do play a part in your life. Read on for some highlights from the history of typing and the typewriter as well as my tribute to someone who played a big part in my life, my typing teacher. Add your contribution to this page by taking part in the poll or by leaving a message in the guestbook.

Why is the American Flag Red, White, and Blue?

Why is the flag of the United States red, white, and blue? What are the significance of those colors? Traditionally, it is said that George Washington believed the stars were taken from the sky, the red from the British colors, and the white stripes signified the secession from the home country. It turns out that no official reason for the choice of the colors was recorded by the Continental Congress. It is true, though, that in 1782 the Congress of the Confederation chose red, white, and blue for the Great Seal of the United States and listed their meaning as white for purity and innocence, red for valor and hardiness, and blue for vigilance, perseverance, and justice. No matter what the original meaning of the colors, our "grand old flag," continues to represent patriotism and pride in the United States, land that we love, home of the free and the brave. Read on to learn more about Old Glory, the red, white, and blue, our American flag.
Adam Lambert, American Idol runner-up and superstar to be. What's the buzz on Adam now? Even though Idol is over for the year and Adam didn't win (Kris Allen did, in case you've been out of touch) the debate goes on over who's more deserving. There are lots of opinions on both sides and you know where to find them, right? On Twitter, of course. Adam Lambert has a fantastic, loyal fan base and now has signed a record deal, so he's doing just great. He also has a huge number of fans (okay, and foes) on Twitter who just love tweeting about him. Check below for some of our favorite tweets about Adam, then check out Adam's tweets, too (is it the real Adam Lambert??) - and add your own! We'll also show you where you can download all of the best American Idol performances by Adam Lambert and the rest of your 2009 American Idol Top 10 favorites. Rock on!
Delicious Dump Cake - A Family Favorite!

Just to clarify, "dump" in the case of this dump cake recipe is used as a verb, as in "dump the ingredients into the pan." Sound messy? Not really. Sound simple? That's because it is simple, simple but oh, so tasty! While there are some variations to the dump cake recipe theme, this version, our family's favorite, uses cherry pie filling and crushed pineapple. Sometimes we top it with nuts, sometimes we don't. Sometimes I make a smaller version and that variation is described below. Dump cake is a great cake to take to a potluck or serve for a special occasion. Top warm dump cake with a scoop of good vanilla ice cream for an extra-special treat. Oh, my, I'm making my mouth water! Let's get on with the dump cake recipe . . . P.S. Don't miss the BONUS RECIPE below, Mom's Pumpkin Crunch. It's fantastic, sort of a dump cake version of pumpkin pie.

This cat has been humiliated. You look, you laugh. Sure, it's funny to you, but how does the cat feel? Cats aren't dogs. Dogs don't mind being humiliated. In fact, dogs thrive on humiliation. But cats have pride. They detest humiliation. They ignore us or, worse, they give us that look. They shed on our best dress pants. They scratch our most expensive piece of furniture and knock over our favorite knick-knack. They invent new mischief. Cats get even. What must we do to get our life back after we have humiliated our cat? We must treat him as royalty. We must give him the attention that he believes, indeed that he truly knows he deserves. We must give up our bed to him and sleep on the couch. We must lavish him with love, praise, and attention. We must shower him with gifts and adoration. We must worship the very ground his four paws walk upon. We must. He is Cat. Cat rules.

Obamustache: Is Barack Obama Growing a Mustache?

Watching news coverage of President Obama's trip to Egypt recently (June 3rd), I noticed what appeared to be a shadow on the presidential upper lip. Did the president not bother to shave? Did he forget to pack his razor? Or, could he actually be growing a mustache? I think he is growing a mustache. At this point it appears thin and straight, but just imagine the possibilities! For that matter, imagine the reasons. Actually, I'm not sure I want to imagine. Perhaps there will be an official press release about the issue soon. In the meantime, I'm curious what other people think about this phenomenon, the presidential mustache. What do you think? Like the idea? Think it's inappropriate? sexy? Sound off with your opinions below.
Cherished Family Favorite Recipes

One of my most cherished possessions is my collection of family favorite recipes. These are the recipes that I use on a daily basis, tried and true recipes that my family loves. My collection isn't huge, but it's big enough to take up a shelf in my pantry, which is where I keep all of my family favorite recipes so that I can find them easily. Now, if you opened my pantry and tried to find a specific recipe, you might have to search for awhile. Of course I know where they all are, so that means nobody had better fool with the cookbooks, notebooks, and recipe files on that shelf or come supper time they might be waiting while I figure out where you moved the one I was looking for! The cookbooks and notebook in the picture are the ones that contain most of our family favorite recipes, and many of the pages are marked with newspaper clippings of recipes or envelopes with recipes written on them. Some of those are a bit food spattered, obviously well used and well loved. And no, my collection of family favorite recipes is not for sale at any price! Visit with me for the next few minutes as I share part of my collection with you and let you know where you can find some of our family's favorite recipes as well as new ones that will become your family's favorites.

Need a cake for a party or a special occasion? How about for Easter or for a birthday? This coconut cream cake is the perfect choice. It's sweet, very rich and flavorful, pretty, and even a little bit decadent! You might think a dessert with all those qualities would be a challenge to bake, but this recipe is very easy, I promise. It's one of our favorite indulgences and, trust me, I don't "do" difficult. If you like cake and love coconut, you've come to the right place.
How did Alex Trebek become Alex The Best? Our family has invited Alex Trebek, host of the long-running game show Jeopardy!, into our living room for years, since our boys were little kids. When we would hear the announcer begin, "And now, here is the host of Jeopardy . . ." our three-year-old would finish the introduction, shouting "Alex The Best!" So, that's how Alex Trebek became Alex The Best, at least at our house. It's been over 20 years, but still every day at Jeopardy! time, we interrupt Johnny Gilbert to shout "Alex The Best!" There's more to Alex Trebek than Jeopardy! He also hosts the annual National Geographic Bee, is active with World Vision and other charitable organizations, often tours military bases with the USO, bringing Jeopardy! to our troops, and is a husband and proud father of two.

Squidoo experts say that lensmasters should write about things they know. Things they love. Things they're passionate about. Indeed, a lens often reveals a lot about its lensmaster and his or her interests and passions. Reading down a list of my lenses you might wonder how one person could have written on such an eclectic range of subjects. Upon closer examination, you might even wonder if several people contributed to the list. Could one person have so many interests, so many passions? Who is this person? On my personal blog I describe myself as a combination of the inner child, the giant squid, the sassy alter ego, and the baby boomer. It wasn't planned, but I think most of my lenses really do reflect one of those segments of my personality. Which is the real me? Actually, they all are. To get to know the whole me, the sum of my parts, you need to get to know a little bit about each of those parts, what I call my four personas. Read on as the real Susan52 is revealed, persona by persona. Caveat! This lens was made to complete an assignment for the RocketMoms group. I was told to talk about myself and if I don't, I won't graduate! So please bear with me as I focus, for now, on the four faces of me.

The Best Easy Banana Pudding Recipe Ever

Not only is this banana pudding quick and easy to prepare, it tastes great! In fact, it's one of our family's favorite desserts. The finished product is so very creamy and rivals cooked, homemade Southern banana pudding. If you prefer, you may substitute the cooked version of the pudding or a homemade pudding recipe; just cool a bit before adding the bananas and the Cool Whip. Prefer pie? Simply use a pie crust of your choice (graham cracker, a regular baked pie crust, even chocolate), leave out the vanilla wafers, and in minutes you have an easy banana cream pie. Let me know how you like it!

The Art of J. C. Leyendecker

J.C. Leyendecker was an American illustrator who lived and painted during the first half of the 20th century. He became famous for his men's fashion advertisements, particularly those for Arrow shirts featuring the Arrow Collars Man, as well as his Saturday Evening Post magazine covers. Leyendecker preceded Norman Rockwell in that role and was, in fact, a friend and hero of Norman Rockwell. The artwork here is "Weapons For Liberty" one of Leyendecker's World War I posters featuring the Third Liberty Loan Campaign and the Boy Scouts of America. We hope you enjoy visiting this page to learn more about J.C. Leyendecker and to see more examples of his art.

Best of the Fairtax on Twitter

These days it seems there's a tax on everything and it seems politicians are looking for creative ways to put an additional tax on everything we eat, drink, drive, or own. Taxes are necessary to pay for government services, but do they need to take so much? How much longer can this go on before there is simply nothing left? Why de-motivate people to work and earn more for their families when earning more simply means paying more income tax? If you're sick of being controlled by taxes or if you feel that the current method of a tax on everything and everything with a tax, then you need to learn about the FairTax. Its name reflects its purpose, a consumption tax that is based on what you spend, not what you earn. It's a tax that YOU control. In short, with the FairTax you would bring home one hundred percent of your paycheck, then you'd pay taxes only on what you spend. To put every citizen, no matter what their income, on equal footing, the government would provide each household with a "prebate" each month, an amount of money to cover the necessary purchases that a family must make each month (think groceries!). Beyond that, if you choose to buy more and spend more each month, then you'll pay a tax on any NEW goods that you purchase. If you choose to save your money, you won't pay a penny more in taxes on your income. If a wealthy person wants to buy a new boat, an expensive coat, or a diamond ring, that person will pay a consumption tax on those goods. Spend more, pay more in taxes. The FairTax system would also eliminate fraud and tax cheats. If a pimp or drug dealer makes money on his illegal activity then spends that money on any new item, he'll pay a tax. No more cheating the income tax system by not claiming and paying taxes on illegal income. People are talking about the FairTax and when people talk, they tweet! We've chosen some of the best recent tweets from Twitter about the FairTax. It's amazing how much one can learn on Twitter. Read the tweets below and follow the links to get a great education on the FairTax and how people feel about it. Then, if you become convinced, as I have, that the FairTax could solve our country's economic woes, become a supporter of the FairTax. Let your representatives in Congress know that you want them to support the FairTax!

Swine Flu Facts - Should You Be Worried?

The news seems to change by the minute, but on Sunday, April 26th, 2009, the United States government declared a public health emergency relating to the recent quick spread of swine flu. The next day, people were asked to reconsider their travel plans. The public began to worry as dire-sounding news coverage increased. Five days later, the name of the flu was changed to Influenza A (N1H1) and, while more cases are still being confirmed daily, the situation appears to be improving. In fact, you might be hard pressed to find a mention of swine flu on the news at this point. What does all this mean? Should you still be worried? How can you protect your family and yourself from this flu? We explore the current situation and provide information and questions about swine flu, or H1N1 flu, with their answers below.

Arkansas was the 25th state to be admitted to the union, on June 15, 1836. Arkansas ranks 29th in area and 32nd in population among the 50 states. The capital of Arkansas is Little Rock, which is also the largest city in the state followed by Fort Smith, located in the western part of the state. Arkansas is referred to as the Natural State and sometimes as the Diamond State. Arkansas is the only state in the United States where diamonds can be found, which is why the diamond shape was chosen to appear on the state flag. Arkansas is also one of the largest rice-producing states. Famous Arkansans currently in the public eye include former president Bill Clinton (former governor of the state) and now Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, as well as former governor and presidential candidate Mike Huckabee.
Why Not Turn a Blog Post into a Squidoo Lens!

I had a bit of a revelation today, one of those "duh" moments that make me feel really smart yet really dumb at the same time. I realized that I could take one of my blog posts, one I'm really proud of, and turn it into a Squidoo lens. Now, isn't that just the most obvious concept you've ever heard of? Yeah, me too. I learned it from Seth Godin of all people. You know, the inventor of Squidoo, the Head Squid himself. It's a concept that's amazingly simple though, I'm guessing, often overlooked. Of course it makes me feel better to think I'm not the only one who hasn't been taking advantage of a resource, one I already own, to use as a topic for a lens. Read on to learn more.

A Tale of Two Susans

Once there was a lensmaster named Susan52 who met a lensmaster named SusanVillasLewis. Online, that is. They had more in common than just their names and when the opportunity arose to meet in person, they did. What fun! They live a state apart, but when SusanVillasLewis was chosen to participate in Seth Godin's "Don't Go To Business School" internship at Squidoo HQ in New York, she had to drive through Susan52's home state to get there, so the two decided to get together for lunch. After all, a girl on the road has to eat! And that's how the meeting at the Macaroni Grill in Little Rock came about. Did you ever wonder how someone you "know" online would be in person? In this case, Susan was just exactly how I knew she would be. What a fun visit we had. I hope you get the opportunity to meet a Squidoo friend sometime, too. Or have you? Read on, then let us know, below. Photo courtesy of Susan52's husband.

FairTax vs Flat Tax

The FairTax is Better than a Flat Tax The IRS has gotten lost in its 60,000 pages of tax code and taxpayers are suffering from it. I want a fair tax, and I choose the FairTax plan. Some people think a flat tax is a good idea. Others want to know what in the world the difference is between the FairTax plan and a flat tax. Some use the two terms interchangeably. Well, they're not the same and I'm going to show you why. And after I do, I'm still going to tell you that the FairTax is better than any flat tax you can throw my way. You can have your say, too, but at the end of the day I still say the FairTax is better than a flat tax - or any other tax plan.

For Jack Bauer Fans and Fans of 24

He's like an action figure in real life. Well, sort of. Jack Bauer is the action figure-like star of the Fox television show "24," played by actor Kiefer Sutherland. Now entering its seventh season, "24" is presented in real-time with each one-hour episode representing one hour in the life of federal agent Jack Bauer. Each season has consisted of 24 episodes, thus 24 hours of Jack Bauer's life. Most of the action in the first six seasons took place in terrorist-ridden Los Angeles, California, centering around Bauer and his interaction with the fictional CTU, or Counter Terrorist Unit, as well as with government officials in Washington, D.C. At the end of season six, CTU was disbanded and season seven, including Jack Bauer, has been moved to Washington, D.C. Whatever action the writers of this award-winning series have planned, Jack Bauer is bound to be in the midst of it, as usual. And fans aren't complaining. Are you a 24 fan? A Jack Bauer fan? Hang onto your hat, hold onto your seat, and get ready to enjoy the ride! Get your own Jack Bauer action figure here.

Resurrection Cookies for Easter

"He is risen!" "Cool!" That's not quite the traditional Easter greeting and response, but it's the one we use at our house ever since our rather precocious firstborn gave the "cool" response one Easter morning at our house many years ago. Indeed, the resurrection of Jesus is a pretty cool story, and I don't think He would mind that we refer to it that way. Resurrection cookies, also called Easter story cookies, are a wonderful tool to use to present the story of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ in a way that children can understand. With the children participating in making the cookies on the night before Easter, then opening the cookies on Easter morning and seeing that the cookies, like the tomb, are miraculously empty, it's an object lession that will stick with a child for a very long time. If you've never tried this presentation or these cookies, we hope you'll choose this year to make them a part of your Easter celebration. It is a humbling experience to go through the process from egg white to empty cookie-tomb, and a wonderful way to start your family's Easter morning off with a joyous "He is Risen!" Cool!

I'm talking about a computer geek, a techie geek, someone who's attached to their laptop, sits in front of a keyboard all day and half the night, someone who owns every electronic gadget known to man, someone most people wouldn't think of as being particularly romantic. Can "romance" and "geek" get together? Certainly they can, and they do when it comes to gift-giving.
I'm an Undecided Voter. Should I vote for Obama or McCain? Convince Me!

The 2008 presidential election is history here in the United States of America and Barack Obama won fair and square. A few weeks prior to the election, which was on November 4, 2008, I posed this challenge to visitors to this lens: "Let's say I'm an undecided voter. Who should I vote for? This is your opportunity to convince me to vote for your candidate!" The lens received many responses, most emotion-charged and heartfelt. The lens received a nice number of visits, many from true undecided voters. It's nice to believe that a forum such as this one played a part in people making up their minds on such an important decision. The comments remain below, at least for now, and it may be interesting to review them as time passes and as we watch to see what happens during President Obama's time in office. People's opinions as they stated them here may or may not change; only time will tell. In the meantime, thank you to all who contributed, and may God continue to bless America.

This lens is about quilting, but then again it isn't. I actually made this lens to demonstrate how simple it is to get started on Squidoo by sharing something you do, something you love, something you're passionate about, such as your favorite hobby. I used quilting as an example. I'm not a quilter, but I was able to put this lens together using the modules in the workshop provided for me by Squidoo. Just think how well I could personzlize it if I had the actual quilting expertise and experience to share. Squidoo is fun, free, and easy to use. If you're passionate about quilts or quilting, you can make a lens like this one, using your own pictures and sharing your expertise. Your lens would be like this one, but different, exhibiting your own personal flair. If you have another hobby or a favorite activity, gadget, person, or any subject that you love, it will be easy for you to share that subject on Squidoo. Just do something similar to what I've done here. When you're ready to get started, just click on the "Create a Lens" button at the bottom of any Squidoo lens, or you can start here. For more details on how this lens was built and how you can make one like it, read this blog post.

What's wrong with this picture? Nothing at all, but imagine the picture reversed, with Hillary's hand on the Bible, swearing to uphold the Constitution of the United States, and former president Bill Clinton proudly looking on.
On January 20, 2009, the United States could have faced two "firsts" had the primaries gone differently. One could have been the first female president, a former First Lady. Second could have been the first husband of a United States president.
Yes, America, Bill Clinton could have become the first First Gentleman of the United States of America.

If you were born between 1946 and 1964, you're in the group commonly referred to as baby boomers. It's an exciting time for those of us who fall into that category, but it can be a scary time, too. Are you a baby boomer? What issues concern you? What aspects of growing older do you look forward to? What issues do you dread? Are you looking forward to newfound freedom as you age and your responsibilities change? Are you worried about how getting older will affect you physically or otherwise? Tell us. Are you excited? Encourage us! What baby boomer issues are on your mind? We want to know. Tweet your reply using the Twitter form below, or leave a longer answer in our guestbook at the bottom of the page. In between, we've provided some information that we hope will help address the baby boomer issues that are of interest to you.

My Top 5 Favorite Movies

To be honest, I'm not much of a movie goer. In fact, I haven't been to the theater to see a movie for a couple of years, and it might have been that time that I fell asleep in the cushy, reclining seat and missed most of the show. Seven bucks for a nap? Nah, I'll stay home. And when I do, I'll likely watch one of my top five favorites on DVD - again. Call me old-fashioned, call me sentimental, call me eclectic for sure, but these are the movies that I think of when asked to name my favorites. Wait! I've decided to add one more, my favorite Christmas season movie. So make it my top six, the bonus at no extra charge - and you can watch it any time of the year!

An American Carol, the Movie

What happens when Michael Moore meets "A Christmas Carol"? Why, that would be "An American Carol," the latest from director David Zucker (think "Airplane" and "Naked Gun"). You won't find Scrooge, but you'll find Michael Malone (played by Kevin Farley), a Hollywood filmmaker who decides he wants to abolish the 4th of July. Fear not, patriotic Americans! Before you can say red, white, and blue, Malone is visited by three rather familiar-looking spirits who take him on a journey through history to show him the true meaning of America. If you'd like the chance to laugh at liberals, then don't miss this hilarious movie, opening across the fruited plain on October 3rd. Wait, you say you are a liberal? Hey, be a good sport and watch the movie anyway. Bet you'll laugh, too! Have you seen it? Love it? Hate it? Review it!

The only good thing about bad times is that when life isn't going so well, we tend to return to our spiritual roots. For Christians, the root of our faith lies in the cross of Calvary, the old rugged cross, the cross upon which Jesus died. Of course it was not His death but His resurrection that matters to us and our salvation, but if not for the cross, we would be lost. When times get tough, Christians cling to the cross. What better way to cling to the cross than to have a cross to hold in our hands, a cross to provide comfort and consolation. Browse this page to find holding crosses, crosses you can cling to, and more to bring comfort in trying times. This "I Asked Jesus" art print is available from allposters.com.

If you have a son from kindergarten to college age, there's a good chance that Boy Scouting has touched your family. Perhaps you were a Boy Scout when you were younger. Maybe, like me, you were a leader in the Boy Scout program. (Yes, I was a den mother.) From Tiger Cubs to Eagle Scout, there's a program for boys of every age, programs that develop character in our youth. In fact, the Venturer program involves young women, too, up to the age of 20. Each of these programs within the framework of the Boy Scouts of America is designed to develop positive values in our young citizens. The products presented here are officially licensed. The postage is real United States postage, good for mailing any card or letter and perfect for showing your support for the Tiger Cubs, the Cub Scouts, Boy Scout programs including merit badges, Eagle Scouts, and more. By the way, don't be surprised to see other items in the mix, including mouse pads, magnets, or postcards. New products are being added!
Embarrassing Products in Plain Brown Wrappers

It can be embarrassing to shop for certain products at your local drug or discount store, but now you can throw away the disguise and shop for all those products-that-you-wish-you-didn't-need from the comfort (and privacy) of your own computer. You know what they are, the hair regrowth and hemorrhoid creams, the products for bad digestion and bad breath, the jock itch powder and the anti-snore strips that are embarrassing enough to wear, let alone pay for when your nosy neighbor is behind you in the checkout line. Let's hear it for the plain brown box that comes in the mail with no one the wiser about what's inside. Yes, even your mail carrier doesn't know for sure and, in fact, thinks you must be really smart if you've read all those books he's been delivering lately! We're here to help you find and shop for all those products you'd just rather not buy at the store. There's another benefit, too. While you're treating your gas problem, you're saving on gasoline! Shop on!

I fell in love with B. Kliban's striped cat in the mid-1970s, shortly after illustrator Bernard Kliban's first book, Cat, was published. Now, this ubiquitous, rather portly striped cat graces everything from books to shirts to sugar bowls which, by the way, are great collectible pieces. Here's my favorite B. Kliban cat verse (picture the cat sitting on a stool, strumming a guitar, singin' a tune): Love to eat them mousies. . . Mousies what I love to eat. Bite they little heads off, nibble on they tiny feet.

Arkansan. Born in Hope. Magna cum laude college grad. Ordained Southern Baptist minister. Former pastor. Husband of Janet. Father of three. Marathon runner. Musician. Republican. Social and fiscal conservative. Former two-plus term governor of Arkansas. Former chairman of the National Governors Association. Now, former candidate for President of the United States of America.
Mike Huckabee was the 44th governor of the state of Arkansas. This page was created to report on his race to become the 44th president of the United States.
This page has been updated throughout Mike Huckabee's candidacy in the Republican presidential primary race. Mike Huckabee vowed to stay in the race, staying true to his supporters, until one single candidate received the required number of delegates to claim the win. Following the primaries of March 4, 2008, Senator John McCain topped that number and claimed the win, and Governor Huckabee dropped out. Certainly Mike Huckabee has made a name for himself on the national scene and we can expect to hear from this fine man for some time. In fact, Mike Huckabee has started a political action committee, the Huck PAC, which you can read about below. We will also keep many of the videos and other information about Huckabee from the campaign, those things that help reveal his character and beliefs.

McCain-Palin 2008

It was the morning after the close of the Democratic National Convention and Barack Obama's grand speech when Republican presidential candidate John McCain took over the spotlight with the announcement of his choice for running mate, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. What a surprise to the nation, most of whom replied, "Sarah who?" The Republican National Convention is over, Sarah Palin has made her bring-the-house-down speech, and "Sarah" is the name on everyone's lips as the candidates hit the campaign trail. As the campaign progresses, the McCain-Palin ticket popularity has risen and fallen (depending on whose poll you believe) as the candidates have continued to campaign - and to debate. How do you feel about all this? What do you think of McCain's choice and the chance for the GOP ticket in November? Undecided? Read more about both Sarah Palin and John McCain here, then vote in our polls and leave your comments below. Looking for McCain-Palin bumper stickers, buttons, t-shirts, and other campaign gear? You'll find those on this page, too. Get your McCain-Palin campaign buttons (and more) here! NEW! John McCain makes Joe the Plumber an instant celebrity! (Joe the Plumber t-shirts, too!)

Red Hats & the Women Who Wear Them

What a great tribute to Red Hatters, those wonderful women of "a certain age" whose purpose it is to rekindle the ability to laugh at themselves and with each other. The purple and red attire worn by Red Hatters is based on the poem, Warning by Jenny Joseph. Most of the hats in this book were created to wear for special occasions and social functions by members of Red Hat Society chapters around the country and around the world. Each hat embodies the spirit of the society as well as that of its creator. From thrift store hats to lamp shades, each hat is carefully crafted and lovingly decorated using flowers, feathers, ribbon, rhinestones, artificial fruit, red and purple fringe, and just about any embellishment you can imagine. Each hat in the book is featured with its owner and its description, revealing the owners' amazing and varied personalities, all having in common the organization's goals of kindling friendships and rediscovering the value of play. The book also contains a bit of hat history and hat trivia that is not to be missed by any lover of hats, red or otherwise. You've gotta admire these women with hattitude!

They've always said they had faces made for radio. Well, PBS must have taken them seriously because they've animated Tom and Ray Magliozzi, also known as The Tappet Brothers, and given them their own TV show! The Car Talk guys may not show their faces, but they do lend their voices to their animated counterparts in the upcoming summer series based on their weekly NPR radio show. Haven't heard of Car Talk? Wow, are you missing out! You don't even have to like cars or have a car problem to enjoy the radio show. At our house, the Car Talk hour is sacred and, even though it's my husband who's the car guy, I love listening to Tom and Ray, too. They're funny guys, but they really know their stuff, and they must be doing something right because their show is one of the most popular hours on National Public Radio each week. "As the Wrench Turns" premiered Wednesday, July 9. To see if it's so bad it's already been canceled, check your local listings. (I've always wanted to say that!) Read on to learn more.

What part of STOP don't you understand?

Do you stop at STOP signs? I mean do you really stop? It seems there are a whole lot of people on the road these days who don't seem to know the meaning of the word STOP. Recently I was waiting in my car in a parking lot by the back entrance of our town's Wal-Mart store. From where I was sitting I could see the road leading out of the parking lot onto the street behind the store. The entire time I was there I watched that intersection and I didn't see even one car actually stop at the STOP sign before they turned out onto the street. Not one! In fact, several people didn't even slow down but just kept right on going. I'll concede that there was little to no traffic on that back street at the time, but I've had many opportunities to observe drivers at that particular intersection and barely slowing down at the STOP sign is the norm rather than the exception. Besides, "Stop unless there's nobody coming" isn't the way the law is written. Maybe it's because I'm the parent of a cop that I notice these things, or maybe it's because I'm a law-abiding citizen who actually does stop at STOP signs, but the drivers' collective behavior today just really rubbed me the wrong way. What part of "STOP" don't you people understand? Read on. (Don't stop now!)

Julie Andrews' career as a performer has spanned more than sixty years as she has established these and so many more wonderful characters on stage, in the movies, and on television. Today, Dame Julie Andrews is also a wife, a mom, and now an author, too.

You recognize her as Mary Poppins, Eliza Doolittle, and The Sound of Music's Maria, but there's more to Julie Andrews than her wonderful voice and her great talent as an actress. She's also a writer, an author of children's books as well as an advocate for children's literacy. Julie began writing children's books over 35 years ago as a result of a game she played with her children. After the first one, she liked it and, happily for all of us, has continued writing. Many of her children's books are co-authored with her daughter, Emma. Several have been best sellers. Some have become classics. Julie's books are featured below. If you love Julie Andrews and if you enjoy reading, we think you're really going to love Julie Andrews Edwards, the author.

Anything for a Vote

Think this has been a wild election year? Well, it hasn't been the first. Funny how history repeats itself. Too tough, too soft, too smart, too dumb, too old (John McCain isn't the first to have heard it), or just downright crazy. Those are some of the kinder things presidential candidates have been accused of. From George Washington to George Bush, presidents and their campaigns have virtually all come with baggage, some real, some invented by the other side. The author has done a great job of putting together anecdotes for every presidential election in American history up to the current one (which may need a volume all to itself, but I digress). Take a break from the current crazy election year politics. Read this book. Laugh a little - or a lot. It'll help take the edge off the next few months leading up to November 4th.

September 2007. You heard his name over and over for weeks and weeks. You knew that General Petraeus's report to the president and Congress would likely shape the future role of the United States in Iraq, and it did. Now, the General is back in the news with testimony before Congress - and the presidential candidates. So, who is this general who holds so much power and wields so much influence on the President of the United States? Let's take a look at the general's background and some of his qualifications.
