Vijayawada City

Vijayawada is located on the banks of river Krishna in the beautiful coastal line of AndhraPradesh, a southern state of India. Also known as Bezawada, this predominantly business city attracts many piligrims for its temple dedicated to Durga and also the city is a base for visiting the Buddhist excavations at Amaravati, which is 70 km away.

This city has triumph in its name. Vijayawada literally translates to "The Place of Victory". According to legends, the city is named after the victory of Arjuna, the Pandava prince of “Mahabaratha”, who offered his prayers atop the Indrakeeladri Hill and won the blessings of Lord Shiva.

The cosmopolitan city of vijayawada is surrounded by many important places. The towns, Kuchipudi, Mangalagiri and Kondapalli, which are famous for dance, temples and handicrafts respectively, are easily accessible from Vijayawada.

“Prakasam Barrage” and the railway bridge across the river have helped the region expand its agricultural and commercial base. The regions around the city have a fertile soil and are irrigated by the river Krishna, which runs through the heart of the city. Hence the city presents a colorful and varied picture and is a bustling center for business, pilgrimage, tourism, agriculture and higher education. With rapid strides taken in these areas, Vijayawada is looking forward to an exciting future.

Vijayawada is a major transit of Andhra Pradesh with two National Highways, National Highway 5, from Madras to Calcutta and National Highway 9 from Vijayawada to Mumbai, State Highways, District Roads. Andhra Pradesh University of Health Sciences was inaugurated on 9-4-1986 Ex. Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Sri N.T. Rama Rao. The University of Health Sciences started functioning at Vijayawada from 01-11-1986. The total number of colleges affiliated to the University at the time of its establishment was 27. Now the affiliated colleges have now gone up to 316. The Degrees awarded by the University are recognized by the statutory bodies like the Medical Council of India, the Dental Council of India, the Central Council of Indian Medicine and the Central Council of Homoeopathy and Indian Nursing Council.

Kondapalli fort, dating back to 7th century, was built by King Krishna Deva Raya and served as a business center in its earlier stages but was later converted into a military training base by British. Kondapalli Fort is one of the beautiful locations situated around 16 Km from Vijayawada. Kondapalli Fort is a popular picnic spot among the locales. Kondapalli village is famous for handmade toys named as kondapalli toys. Kondapalli made of light wood they are exported to all over world.

Kanaka Durga temple is very famous in India located top of Indrakeeladri hills. She is considered as Shaktipeetham. But, there is no reference to her in “Ashtadasa Shakti peetha stotram”. Dasara Sharan Navaratras are the biggest and most celebrated festive season in Vijayawada Kanaka Durga temple.
