Police Arrested 3 suspects in Connection with A/L Examination Paper Leak

In a significant development regarding the leakage of the GCE A/L 2023 Agricultural Science question papers, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has apprehended a peon of the Moratuwa Maha Vidyalaya exam center. The suspect, identified as a 38-year-old male, was taken into custody on January 15.

The police spokesman, addressing the media, revealed that the arrest was made following a thorough investigation into the incident. The suspect, who held the position of peon at the Moratuwa Maha Vidyalaya exam center, allegedly played a pivotal role in the unauthorized dissemination of the Agricultural Science question papers.

Earlier today, police Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested an employee who was on duty at the examination center in Ampara. It is alleged that the employee played a role in the distribution of the leaked paper to a teacher, who was apprehended earlier in connection with the same case.

On January 14, A 52-year-old male government school teacher from Ampara, who also conducted tuition classes, has been apprehended by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) for allegedly leaking the GCE A/L Agricultural Science I & II question papers.

The Examinations Commissioner has assured the public that a new date for the reexamination of the Agricultural Science subject will be duly communicated in advance.

The decision to cancel the exam came after credible information surfaced, indicating that the question paper had been compromised to the social media.

The economic crisis has had a major impact on people’s mental health. Some groups, including students, people living alone, and those with pre-existing mental health conditions, have been particularly affected. “Suicide is never the answer – there is always HOPE “

Sri Lanka had a suicide rate of 6.9/100,000 in 1950 which dramatically increased to 47/100,000 by 1995 to clock the highest in the world. But suicide prevention strategies implemented on recommendations by the Presidential Task Force of 1997 succeeded in bringing the rate down to 24/100,000 in 2004, 18/100,000 in 2014, and 16/100,000 in 2019. These included decriminalising the act of suicide (1998), a Life Skills Programme introduced by the Ministry of Education (1998), and banning the use of extremely toxic pesticides.

Suicide, A major public health problem in Sri Lanka which demands attention, but its prevention and control, unfortunately, are not an easy task. According to WHO, close to 800 000 people die globally by suicide every year, which is one person every 40 seconds. Furthermore, for each suicide, there are more than 20 suicide attempts.

Sri Lanka Government to support the indigenous Culinary Art

President Ranil Wickremesinghe said that it is the aim of the Government to maximize the contribution of tourism in order to achieve the development goals of the country.

Sri Lanka's unique Culinary Art has attracted tourist from all over the world and maximum Government support will be extended to its promotion, the President mentioned.

The President made this statement while declaring open the Culinary Art Food Expo (CAFÉ) 2023 (09) at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) premises in Colombo.

The Chefs Guild of Lanka organizes the Culinary Art and Food Exhibition, which showcases the talent of culinary artists from all over Sri Lanka.

This year's exhibition consists of 88 product and service booths and the President also joined in observing the booths. The President was also engaged in a cordial conversation with the chefs who participated in the exhibition, also inquired about the issues they were facing.

The President also said that many new programs will be implemented for the advancement of the field, including the establishment of a Culinary Art school and the introduction of a system for ranking chefs.

Further speaking President Ranil Wickremesinghe said;

First of all, I must thank you for inviting me to this exhibition. And what you have displayed here fits in with the growth policy of the Government. The growth policy of the Government includes tourism to double and in first stage the numbers to go up to 5 million. Secondly, increase their revenue per tourist, which means we have to now go to the high end tourists.

Some are worried whether it is a difficult jump to make. I don't think you have any option. We have a large number of human resources leaving the country because it is far more attractive elsewhere. We have at least got to match Maldives in the remuneration. Otherwise you can't run a tourist industry.

That can only be done if we are prepared to increase the rate thereby. But to do that we must give a good service. There are many aspects; But remember, one that is common to all is cuisine. The tourists are coming here because they are interested in cuisine.

As far as the suppliers are concerned, we would like you to remain in a high standard and even go have a higher standard, be able to make a mark that somehow you can even export some of your products to other countries.

We have to ensure that we have a sufficient number of tests in this country as the industry expands. Unfortunately, at the moment we haven't. We have no means of satisfying the demand. So the Government will certainly help different hotels and associations to expand the number. Don't expect the Government to do it. We don't. We can't cater to that market that is required. So that has to be done by the non-Government sector and we are certainly willing to help.

We will also help by starting one school, specifically for cuisine and culinary work. So that's what we can do. I hope that the others will take up. There has been a demand in the South. I think we can have one in Nuwara Eliya, Bandarawela, Ella and Dambulla. We can help ensure you to get chefs from abroad who also have the experience to ensure that their knowledge and the experience is passed onto the younger members of this profession.

Secondly, I think we should have some system of grading our chefs. So why don't we have international standards and give a few stars? I think when the new tourist policy is announced it is a matter that you will have to discuss with the Ministry of Tourism.

I would like to see some of the private entrepreneurs coming forward. You can't develop the tourist industry without developing the human resources.

It is useless giving tax incentives for hotels if they haven't got the manpower for the kitchens. So the Government is willing to help and to work together with, most probably in the next two months, announce our new policies and you will be surprised at what changes we are going to make. And similarly your association and others involved in the tourist trade will get together I presume, to help us go forward.

Remember, we have a good future and we do so by developing the young talent we have. All those people here should one day become good chefs and I hope work in Sri Lanka. But we have to ensure the conditions here are conducive to them for staying in the country.

First of all, let me welcome all of you for one of the most challenging events; ‘CAFE 2023’ that we will stage. When I say challenging since 2019, we were not able to stage the event due to the COVID and many issues that we faced.

However, this year we took a bold decision. In fact, we took a chance wondering whether we would have the response that we normally have had in the past. However, the response has been great for this event considering the situation that the country has been in. And believe me; I had my doubts as well because the tourism sector was the hardest hit. And I will say I agree 100% that we have come from it much faster than we ever thought we would.

And we have to thank the President solely and its supportive government that made it happen. There were many businesses that had to close down, but you can see many of them also opening. Now, our main objective in the scale of Lanka is to fly the image of our chefs’ sky high. And secondly, we have a commitment to train and develop as Sri Lankans in the industry.

Dengue Fever Spreading – Over 70000 dengue cases report in Sri Lanka

So far this year 2022 according to National Dengue Control Unit data, over 70,000 dengue cases report. Dengue fever increases in Sri Lanka, usually soon after rainfall as rains are optimal for mosquito breeding.

So far a total of 70,403 suspected dengue cases reported in Sri Lanka. Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children says that the number of children who are currently receiving treatment for the dengue virus has also increased.

Puttalam, Kalpitiya, Wennappuwa, Chilaw, Mahawewa, Matale, Kandy, Kalutara and Panadura MOH areas have been identified Dengue high risk zones according to NDCU.

Schools to re-open

State Minister of Education Aravindh Kumar has announced that all government and government approved private schools island-wide which were closed due to bad weather on Friday (Dec. 09), will reopen December 12.

The Ministry of Education declared Friday a special holiday for all government and government-approved private schools, taking the prevailing adverse weather condition into account, following the inquiries made from the Department of Meteorology and the Disaster Management Centre.

Over 1000 cattle and goats died due to bad weather

Agriculture Ministry says that 1,092 heads of cattle and goats have died due to the shock of prevailing cold weather, in the Northern and Eastern provinces reports Hirunews.lk.

According to the statistics by the Department of Animal Production and Health, 358 cattle and 191 goats have died in the Northern Province, while 444 cattle, 34 buffaloes and 65 goats have died in the Eastern Province.

The transportation of beef and mutton at district and provincial level has been suspended with immediate effect.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe has ordered to suspend the transportation of beef and mutton at district and provincial level with immediate effect in order to safeguard public health considering the sudden death of cattle, buffalos and goats in the Northern and Eastern Provinces.

The President has also instructed the relevant district officers and the Police to act responsibly in this regard.

University Grants Commission UGC Chairman Senior Professor Sampath Amaratunga says that registration of students selected for university degree courses based on the results of the Advanced Level Examination 2021 held in 2022 will start from next week. The chairman further says that students selected for the degree courses in the universities were informed to register through text messages and e-mails. Steps will be taken to re-admit the students to the vacant courses after the students have registered for each course.

Anthare IUSF launches protest against Kotelawala Private University Bill

Sri Lanka’s major students’ union, Inter University Students’ Federation IUSF “Anthare” says the government is planning to pass the Kotelawala Private University Act, which was defeated in 2018, in another round. IUSF further says that Cabinet approval was obtained for the bill on March 26 and the Kotelawala Bill is scheduled to be discussed in the Consultative Committee of the Ministry of Defense tomorrow June 22.

On June 21 , IUSF launched a protest near Colombo Fort Railway Station demanding government to withdraw the proposed Kotelawala Private University Act. A tense situation arose during the protest among police and students.

“The government has launched an attack on a peaceful protest organized by the Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) today against the Kotelawala Act, which is destroying free education to be passed under the guise of an epidemic. The protest continued to be disrupted and assaults, reprimands and threats were made. It is the policy of the government to launch repression instead of responding to the call for rights and all forces must line up against it” says Inter University Student Federation.

Inter University Student Federation is planning to launch several protests coming days against the Kotelawala Private University Act.

University lecturers union, the Federation of University Teachers’ Association (FUTA) is not happy over the proposed bill and says that universities and higher education will be militarized through the Bill. The KNDU Bill was presented to Parliament in March 2021.

Meanwhile National People’s Power (NPP) Parliamentarian Dr. Harini Amarasuriya recently said the proposed Bill will pave the way for militarisation and privatisation of Higher Education in the country. The Parliamentarian said that the proposed Bill will also reduce the standards of the country’s Higher Education Sector.

A new member joined to the Sri Lankan university system. Professor G. L. Peiris, Minister of Education issued a Gazette Extraordinary and convert the “Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka,” as “University of Vavuniya, Sri Lanka”. Vavuniya University will be the 17th National University of Sri Lanka. Hence the Vavuniya Campus affiliated to the University of Jaffna will be an independent university from August 1st.

THE UNIVERSITIES ACT, No. 16 OF 1978 Order under section 21
BY virtue of the powers vested in me by section 21 of the Universities Act, No. 16 of 1978,1, Professor G. L. Peiris, Minister of Education, in consultation with the University Grants Commission, do by this Order —
(a) establish with effect from August 01, 2021, a University, for the purpose of providing, promoting and developing higher education in the branches of learning of Business Studies, Applied Science and Technology Studies;
(b) assign such University the name and style of “University of Vavuniya, Sri Lanka”;
(c) specify the location which shall be the seat of such University within the administrative District of Vavuniya;
(d) specify that the University shall develop courses connected to a wide range of related disciplines with the aim of providing the students with a well-grounded education with potential to develop specialization in chosen disciplines;
(e) specify that the University shall place greater emphasis on educating students on creating value within the local resource base; and
(f) specify that such University shall comprise of the Faculties and the Departments of study set out in Column I and II respectively, of the Schedule hereto: –

GCE O/L Exam Results Release to delay due to COVID 3rd wave. Results in July month?

According to some sources O/L exam results release will delay due to the prevailing 3rd coronavirus wave, limit government offices’ staff, lock-downs and travel restrictions. Sources suggest result will release in July. Several fake news are circulating via social media saying O/L exam results release dates. Results will release to examination department official www.doenets.lk website. Examination Department officials have NOT so far announced the exact O/L results releasing date or the time.

Few months ago Sri Lanka Education Minister said that 2020 GCE O/L examination results will be released in June month. The results of the GCE Ordinary Level Exam held from March 01 to 10 are expected to be released by June month and accordingly, plans have been made to start new A/L classes for these students from 2021 July, said Education Minister Prof. GL Peiris.

FUTA unhappy over arbitrary rejection of nominations for the post of VC of Open University of Sri Lanka. Writes to President expressing extreme displeasure and strong opposition

Sri Lanka university teachers’ union, Federation of University Teachers Associations (FUTA) writes to President Gotabaya Rajapaksa expressing extreme displeasure and strong opposition regarding the arbitrary rejection of the names of candidates recommended by the council of the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL), for the post of Vice Chancellor (VC).

According to FUTA, President’s office has arbitrarily rejected the shortlist names with no apparent reason. FUTA says they believe such an arbitrary action creates an extremely negative precedent for the entire university system. This arbitrary rejection implies that President has no faith either in the VC selection system introduced by the government or in the council of the university, which is the supreme governance body of the institution. This message sent out by this action is that the President will reject nominations for the post of VC until such time that a name acceptable to the him is forwarded and it will lead to the direct politicization of the VC selection process. Such an impression within the academic community will discourage many highly qualified and independent academics from applying for the top position in the university, leaving the door open for mediocre and politically partisan individuals to become the VC.

Arbitrary rejection of the nominations for the post of Vice Chancellor of the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL).

Full Letter – As the Federation of University Teachers Associations (FUTA), the body that represents all academic staff of the entire state university system in the country we write to express our extreme displeasure and strong opposition regarding the arbitrary rejection of the names of candidates recommended by the council of the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL), for the post of Vice Chancellor (VC) of that University, which falls vacant on 23/06/2021.

We would like to bring to your attention that these candidates have been selected following a procedure introduced by your government through the University Grants Commission (UGC) Circular No 02/2020 of 4th May 2020. Under this system, five candidates are selected at first by a five-member committee comprising two academics from within the university and three members nominated by the UGC. The circular requires this committee to allocate marks to the applicants according to a pre-defined set of criteria as specified in the aforementioned circular. Then within the same day, the council of the university re-allocates marks for the five candidates based on their qualifications, experience and a presentation they may before the council, and select three names which are ranked according to the marks they receive. This list is then forwarded to the UGC and the UGC is expected to forward this list to your excellency with its recommendation. As mentioned in clause no.34 (1) (a) of the Universities Act of 1978 it is the President’s duty to then appoint a suitable candidate from the three names thus sent considering the UGC’s recommendation.

We observe that this entire procedure, which took up to 06 months was carried out properly in this instance, but your office has arbitrarily rejected the shortlist with no apparent reason. As FUTA we believe such an arbitrary action creates an extremely negative precedent for the entire university system. This arbitrary rejection implies that you have no faith either in the VC selection system introduced by your own government or in the council of the university, which is the supreme governance body of the institution. This message sent out by this action is that the President will reject nominations for the post of VC until such time that a name acceptable to the him is forwarded and it will lead to the direct politicization of the VC selection process. In the current period of crisis where the Corona virus pandemic has caused multiple negative impacts on Sri Lanka’s economy and society, we need independent and qualified academics to lead our university system. Upending an established procedure and creating confusion within the academic community is not the kind of action that we as FUTA expect from an enlightened political leadership. We also believe that the arbitrary rejection of the nominations undermines the core principles of autonomy and democratic governance enshrined within the Universities Act of 1978 and creates an impression of highly politicized executive overreach in university governance. Given the above context, FUTA demands that the re-advertisement process for the post of VC of the OUSL be immediately halted and that a suitable candidate from the already recommended list be appointed as soon as possible. Your excellency’s failure to act responsibly and transparently at this juncture can lead to the destabilization of the entire university system of the country.

Western Province Schools to open by February 15

Sri Lanka Education Ministry is hoping to re-open the schools in the Western Province (WP) by February 15, Education Ministry Secretary Prof. Kapila Perera said. Western Province Schools to open by February 15.

He said the Education Ministry should act based on the information received from the non-health risk schools and accordingly could commence educational activities in other schools in the rest of the areas in the WP. Hence, such recommendations should be submitted to the Ministry before February 10.

Based on that, decision will be taken subsequent to the recommendation by the Director General of Health. He said the District Development Committees will meet on January 28, 29 and February 1 to take appropriate decisions regarding the commencement of schools with the participation of the Regional Health Officers.

Accordingly, it was revealed that there are 1,576 schools in 11 education zones in the WP, from those schools, nearly 79,000 children are scheduled to sit for the GCE Ordinary Level Examination scheduled to be held in March, he said.

The Health authorities have agreed to open 907 schools in the WP from January 25 for the students who will appear for the O/L Examination this year, he said.

It was decided at a discussion held at the Ministry yesterday about the commencement of schools for other grades in the WP after consulting all parties including the Government Agents, Divisional Secretaries and Chairmen of the Regional Development Institutions in each District, Prof. Perera added. Sri Lanka conveys its gratitude to India for Covid19 vaccine gift

Expressing its gratitude for India’s help in a time of need, Sri Lanka has thanked New Delhi for its gift of 5 lakh Covid-19 vaccine doses. The island-nation received the consignment of Covishield vaccines from India on Thursday, reports IndiaNewsNetwork

A statement from the Sri Lankan President’s office stated that vaccination is set to commence from January 29 at six main hospitals in the Western Province. The island-nation has prioritized 150,000 health workers, 120,000 members of tri-forces, police and security forces, the release added.

Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa took to Twitter to acknowledge India’s help. He said, “Received 500,000 Covid-19 vaccines provided by people of India at BIA today (28).

Thank you PM Shri Narendra Modi and people of India for the generosity shown towards people of Sri Lanka at this time in need.”

India’s gift of vaccines was handed over to President Rajapaksa at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) by High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka Gopal Baglay in a programme titled ‘Vaccine Maitri- Gifting of India’s Covishiled Vaccines to Sri Lanka’.

The vaccines, weighing about 1,323 kg, will initially be stored at the airport’s cold storage facilities before being transported in refrigerated vehicles to 25 districts at a temperature of 2-8 degrees Celsius.

India has supplied a consignment of 500,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covishield vaccine manufactured by Pune-based Serum Institute of India. Sri Lanka’s drug regulatory authority had earlier this month approved emergency use of the Covishield Vaccine.

The vaccines that reached Colombo on Thursday are India’s gift to the island-nation under its ‘Vaccine Maitri’ initiative, under which it has supplied vaccines to seven other countries in the South Asian region.

The supply of vaccines by India is a fulfillment of the promise made by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to his Sri Lankan counterpart Mahinda Rajapaksa during the bilateral summit held in September last year.

Prime Minister Modi had pledged all possible support to the island-nation for minimizing health and economic impact of the pandemic.

Sri Lanka is an important constituent of India’s Neighbourhood First policy. In keeping with this policy, New Delhi launched Operation Vaccine Maitri under which it supplied Covid-19 vaccines to Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Myanmar, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar had paid a three-day state visit to Sri Lanka in January and had discussed cooperation for post-Covid health and economic recovery. Jaishankar had received a formal request from Sri Lanka for India’s assistance in obtaining the Covid vaccines.

The online registration of students for the new 2019/2020 academic year in universities commenced. University Online Registration for students commences and student can apply via UGC official website. The University Grants Commission said measures are in place for students to register online.

Accordingly, students can log on to www.ugc.ac.lk and register. 41,500 students are to be registered for the 2019/2020 academic year.

Online registration for students who sat for the GCE Advanced Level examination 2019/20 can register for universities from November 23, the University Grants Commission (UGC) said in a statement. Students can complete the registration via www.ugc.ac.lk. The UGC states that special intake will be available for the applicants with exceptional abilities/ skills in sports to Universities-Academic Year 2019/2020.

Stress is normal and can even be motivational in driving us to be more productive. Stress is the body's natural response to events occurring around us and our environment—it's how we respond to challenges and situations that may stir up strong emotions, like fear.

What is Academic Stress?

Academic stress is experienced when the body responds to an event (called a "stressor”) related to academia or school. The condition is common among students who feel that they do not have the capacity to meet the demands of their work or their classes. Stressors are most commonly reported to be exams, public speaking, and a lack of time to complete their work, either due to an overload of assignments or an inability to balance their commitments.

As such, it's important to come up with ways to minimize your stress in order to maintain your health.

How To Cope With Academic Stress

1. Write Down Important Dates

It can be easy to forget important dates once you start accumulating more assignments or schoolwork. Make it easier on yourself by keeping a calendar of your commitments and dates that assignments are due, in addition to the dates of exams.

2. Create To-Do Lists and Time Tables

Outlining your tasks and budgeting your time can help you feel less overwhelmed as due dates and exams approach. Breaking down projects and assignments into smaller parts can help you visualize what you need to do, making your work more manageable.

Assigning blocks of time to your tasks will help keep you on track. Try to be realistic about how much time it will take you to complete a reading or writing assignment so that you aren't overwhelmed or pressured for time if you fall a bit behind schedule.

3. Ask For Help If You Don't Understand

Don't be afraid to ask for help if you have trouble grasping a concept or can't solve a problem you've spent a lot of time on. You may waste time and energy focusing on the problem that could be spent on other tasks. Reach out to a friend, a peer, or your teacher with your concerns and your approach. Sometimes another perspective or explanation can be all you need to see the problem in a new light.

4. Keep a Regular Schedule

Having a routine helps to cultivate healthy and positive habits that can help us feel accomplished and motivated to handle more tasks. Implementing small tasks like cleaning your room or workspace, making your bed, brushing your teeth, eating breakfast before sitting down to study can take a little pressure off of your bigger tasks since you've already gotten off to a good start for the day.

Maintaining a routine also ensures that you balance your responsibilities and your schoolwork with time to relax. Prioritizing a balance between work and life keeps us in control of our schedules, rather than allowing our work to dictate your schedule. Make sure your schedule includes time to exercise, catching up with your loved ones, eating healthy meals, and sleeping regularly in order to have enough energy to do your work.

5. Take Breaks

It's important to take breaks when you're studying or working, especially if you feel yourself getting overwhelmed. Suppressing your anxiety or frustration can often backfire, leading you to worry more or get upset later on. Take moments to stretch and to do breathing exercises throughout the day, either between your classes or if you've been reading or sitting for a while. Studies show that movement and breathing help lower your blood pressure in addition to releasing hormones like oxytocin or serotonin lower stress levels in the body. Even just five to ten minutes of movement or breathing can help you feel re-energized.

6. Reward Yourself

Giving yourself incentives like a sweet treat or things to look forward to (playing a game, seeing a friend) after accomplishing a few tasks, or achieving your goals will keep you motivated. You're working hard and deserve the acknowledgment! Rewards also help to boost your confidence and may release endorphins that keep you happy.

7. Seek Help If Necessary

If you find yourself in a place where you're so overwhelmed that these tips don't help, talk to someone who can help. All Universities reopen in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka University Grant Commission UGC decided to reopen the universities. UGC to reopen the universities from August 17 Monday for all years. First, Second and Third year students’ exams dates will be announced later. Examinations of 4th-year students of all universities already started. Earlier UGC decided to reopen the universities following two months long coronavirus vacation from June 15. Under the re-opening process, Medical Faculties of all state universities for final year students reopened from June 15.

“The UGC Chairman Prof Sampath Amaratunga says that lectures conducted online due to the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic have shown remarkable progress. All universities under National University System will commence their academic activities on August 17,” he said.

Addressing a press conference in Colombo Prof Amaratunga said the examinations of the third year students of medical faculties continued uninterrupted from July 15.

He added that all universities should comply with guidelines issued by the heatlh authorities to prevent the spread of Covid - 19.

Commenting on the hostel facilities at universities, the UGC Chairman said that only one student was allowed to occupy a hostel room due to concerns regarding the spread of the virus. “Accommodation facilities will be provided at universities as usual with the resumption of academic activities,” he said.

Universities opening dates

Final year examinations of all medical faculties started from June 15.

Examinations of 4th-year students of all universities commenced from the June 22.
Faculties of Arts, Science, Law and Education at the University of Colombo reopened for exams on June 29.
Faculty of Agriculture at the University of Peradeniya reopened on June 28.
Exams of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura continued from August 04.

First, Second and Third year students’ exams dates will be announced later.

All universities are expected to conclude the final year exams by August 15, the UGC chairman said.

Decision was taken by UGC after consult with health officials. Currently Sri Lanka is continuously taking measures against the coronavirus. The Government has made arrangements to provide the maximum possible facilities for students to distantly continue their education.

On March, Sri Lanka’s University Grants Commission ordered all universities to close after the country announced its first COVID-19 case.

Ministry of Higher Education has been informed to review the present situation and with the agreement of the University administrations and University Grant Commission UGC decide the date to open the universities for students.

Sri Lanka’s University Grants Commission has acknowledged that new admissions to universities could also be delayed due to the closures and public sector shutdowns as the government declared special holidays and curfew.

This is the fourth occasion that all universities have been closed in Sri Lanka. In 2019, all universities and schools closed after the deadly blasts in churches and hotels that killed hundreds of people on Easter Sunday. The closure lasted a month.

In August 2012, the government closed all universities after a two-month lecturer strike, while in November 2013, universities closed for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.

Professor Sampath Amaratunga added that in collaboration with the Ministry of Health a circular on healthcare measures to be taken to prevent coronavirus infection in universities will be issued soon in near future.

The respective Ministry will commence sending letters of appointment to those who got selected immediately. Appointed candidates should report to their nearest Divisional Secretariat DS office on September 2.

The programme to provide employment to 100,000 poorest of the poor will be implemented by the Task Force established solely for this purpose from 02nd, September.

The number of unemployed university graduates to be recruited is 50,000. For the remaining 100,000 jobs, candidates will be selected from families of the lowest strata of income earners in the society.

The programme to employ 50,000 graduates and 100,000 low-income earners was formulated within weeks after President Rajapaksa assuming office in November 2019.

Shortlisting suitable candidates from applications received from graduates commenced in the first week of February. A Multi-Purpose Development Task Force was established to recruit 100,000 low-income earners. The objective of the programme is to transform Sri Lanka into a country free from poverty as per the “Saubhagyaye Dekma” policy statement of the President.

Chairman of the Election Commission directed to suspend the program to offer jobs for 150,000 unemployed persons following the announcement of the General Election 2020. Accordingly, the programme was suspended. Immediately after the conclusion of the General election on the 5th of August, President Rajapaksa took measures to establish the executive of the Government adhering to the provisions given in the Chapter VIII of the Constitution.

The Prime Minister of the new government took oaths on Sunday, the 9th of August. The Secretary to the Prime Minister was appointed on the following day. A week after the election on August 12, both Cabinet ministers and state ministers were sworn in. Secretaries to the Ministries were appointed on the following day (August 13). The inaugural parliamentary session will ceremonially commence on the next Thursday (20). Following the formal establishment of the administration, the President has decided to implement the programme of providing 150,000 employment opportunities without any delay.

Colombo International Book Fair on September at BMICH

The Colombo International Book Fair 2020, organized by the Sri Lanka Book Publishers Association for the 22nd consecutive year, begins on September 18 at the BMICH, Colombo. The books exhibition will run till September 27, from 9 am to 9 pm every day. Organizers have arranged special health and COVID19 safety measures.

This is a good news for book lovers. Colombo International Book Fair CIBF 2020 begins at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) from the September 18th Friday to the 27th Sunday. CIBF is considered as the Sri Lanka’s largest book Exhibition. There will be strict safety measures due to ongoing Coronavirus outbreak.

When is Colombo Book Fair begin?

Here is a great chance for Pre-schools, school students, university students and higher education students to buy Books, Magazines and Stationery at special discounts. The Colombo international Book fair 2020 will be held from September 18 to 27th at 9.00 am to 9.00 pm.

Sri Lanka Book Publishers Association is organizing the fair for the 22nd year. Book Publishers Association says there will be about 400 stalls both local and foreign. Around 150 publishing companies will participate in the fair this year. Entrance is free for schoolchildren, university students, members of the clergy and armed forces personnel (in uniform). Others charge a fee of Rs.20 or Rs. 50. Fee is not yet finalized.

CIBF is the largest book exhibition in Sri Lanka and event held annually drawing crowds from all parts of the island.

Special Discounts
The Book Fair will see publishers, importers and retailers of books in English, Sinhala and Tamil as well as stationery, offering their products at various discounts. Pre-schools, Schools and universities can get special discounts. Also discounts ranging from 5% to 70% grants at the event and lot of Bargain Books available at the exhibition. The fair starts at 9.00 am and end 9.00 pm.

Large Crowd
Last year Book Fair (CIBF) visited by a million customers during the nine days period. Due to coronavirus outbreak, there will be special health and safety regulations.

Therefore large crowd will be visiting day time, Hence if you want select books freely recommended visit at night. Special shuttle bus service has arranged from Bambalapitiya to Borella. Because of the possible traffic, Police to launch special Traffic plan. In addition Police provides special parking plan near BMICH till September 27.

Much awaited 2019 A/L Re Correction Results (Re scrutiny Results) to Release before August 2nd week told Examination Department Commissioner Sanath Pujitha to "Lanka Education". "Currently we have completed most of the tasks and there are few more to complete, we are doing the re-calculations, there are 63 subjects for this re-calculations, and we have to complete the Z re-calculations process again" Examination Department Commissioner Sanath Pujitha told to "Lanka Education".
