Kolkata Calling...

2016-07-03T15:31:00.001+05:30

My first visit to Kolkata since I picked up the camera seriously. An interesting place with a lot happening all the time, Kolkata offers a lot of sites and moments worth capturing in the camera. With these pictures, I'd say that I've only scratched the surface mildly. So, I'd call 'Kolkata Calling' a project that is WIP. I'm promising myself to be back in Kolkata and capture many more aspects of the city of joy.

Brilliant Banaras...

2016-03-31T15:57:00.001+05:30

It's called the City of Moksha, the Oldest City lived by Mankind, the holiest for Hindus, and so on. Much has been said and written about it. My addition, albeit at the expense of repetition, is that it's a wonderful place for photography enthusiasts to get going practising their craft. The streets and lanes, the ghats, the food, the people...it's a happening place.

Sweeping Changes: The ghats of Banaras are clean enough for one to walk all over...

2015-10-15T18:21:00.002+05:30

Every day, since years, it has attracted thousands of visitors to be mesmerized by its beauty from all angles of the great monument. But now, the Taj Mahal...as I gathered...some or the other part of it will always be in its cleaning phase till the foreseeable future. Pollution of all sorts, acid rain and whatever has now left it in such a state that we may not see it in a way we expect it to be. The scaffolding for cleaning one of its minarets is just the kind of eyesore we will end up seeing most often. Bad...so bad...blame it on us humans.

But then, as they say, a rose by another name would still be a rose. The Taj, any which way, will still be Taj…Wow Taj.

The Taj Mahal…can it be anything else but beautiful. Beautiful for its architecture is obvious. More beautiful for love being the reason for its creation.

Ravana Today - Born to Burn.

2014-09-28T12:15:00.000+05:30

While the effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkaran and Meghnad are made to be set afire, a great lot of creativity and a huge bit of effort goes into it. There is a lot of competition to make one to look better than the other...and there are a lot of orders to be delivered. Titarpur in west Delhi is the place where the work of making these effigies is concentrated, albeit, only for 3 months of the year. Take a look.

It all starts with the making of frames using bamboo, held together by wires and strings.

The frames are layered with with paper, old sarees and such material.

Heads...

Different parts of the effigy are then given a coat of colour.

While this beastly 'Ravan' is dummy enough to do any harm to this beauty, save her from those 'Ravans' roaming the streets in the form of beastly men difficult to identify.

The face is what lends a certain 'personality' to the effigy in which the moustache is the better part of differentiation...and the artists bring in their creative thoughts, the most over here.

Child labour and all that...on a rather surprising note this chap likes lending a hand to other family members in the seasonal business of making those effigies.

Adjusting for a great top view.

Twirly

Make up time.

The typical Ravan wala...muchhadd.

As the sun goes down, curious onlookers admiring the beauty of the effigies of Meghnad, Ravana and Kumbhkaran, one last time before they go blazing.

While burning the Ravana is a ritual carried on from ages...let it mean today to be a pledge to get rid of the evils plaguing our world.

Woman of (lot of) substance.

Fashion statement or Faith?

Under the bull's eye!!!

The parrot picks the card...the man parrots the fortune to the fortune seeker.

Awe Triangle!!!

At a time when we are taking pride in going digital, we still haven't started saying 'Kindle is the best friend one can have'. The feel of a book in hand is very different than a device. But...read anyway.

A razor in hand in any context can be intimidating. It's a matter of trust that one accepts it to get close to your neck.

One can go far in life, if together with someone dear.

Waiting with uncertainty can be a painful experience. Whoever you might be waiting for...there is an expectation. You may or may not get what you expect. So...there are no pleasant surprises of getting what you didn't expect while waiting.

Girls...please save them for goodness sake.

"Pink-Panthers"? Or "Sita aur Gita" of Italy...

'Wondering my blunders'.

Forget about parallel banks. They are right outside one...exchanging old notes for new ones at a discount.

You'll never know what you can do unless you try. Be brave. Have faith.

It's better to try things out and have a chance to succeed, than to sit on your bum and be a failure in your mind.

Creating a marvel is easier than being able to keep it that way. The Red Fort in Delhi, built way back in 1648, continues to charm us...thanks to the effort of people like him.

Economic Disparity...happens when one has a lot covered up and with some surplus, not desirous of giving away any.

With people looking in different directions...does any one care these days?

Forget about Rejuvenation Resorts and Oxygen Bars...come to a park instead. Leave aside your Pads. Tabs, Smarties...and what have you. Fetch your good old newspaper, sit back, relax...go back in time. Slow down once in a while.

Lonely...oh so lonely. I'm so lonely, I have nobody to call my own.

Memories from Orchha - December '13.

2013-12-30T16:24:00.001+05:30

28-30 Dec' 2014: A weekend at Orchha to round off the year with my camera. Orchha, a small place near Jhansi had much to offer if these pictures were to say so. Got there and felt filled with bliss. Friendly people all around with no one in a hurry. Nice weather and great food helped in being one with the place....and then these pics happened.

Bliss: This is about a state of mind being one with the surrounding beauty of nature and man-made monuments.

The 'Chhatris' of Orchha...in memory of the family members of the Bundela rulers of the 17th and 18th century.

My Personal Favorites

Every step you take, every move you make...the shadow follows you.

Absolutely a matter of chance. While I wanted to click birdy pics at Sultanpur, the birds chose to be far away from me. And instead came this great blue bull....I didn't mind at all.

Got Bull!!!

A pedestrian crossing in Seoul. There is something mysterious about this....while you see something, you think about what you don't see.

On air, seeing land and water meeting up...approaching the HongKong Airport.

Aah...if only i'm assured of a rest as peaceful and magical as this, I'd want rest right away.

Music on the Move!!!

On a Sunday afternoon...while just fooling with the camera on the terrace. I trailed the plane for a silhouette. The bird that came on the way seemed like a gift from the god above. To me it added a reference point depending on who you treat as the main subject in the picture.
