SRP Solar Electric Rebate

SRP has announced a change to their Solar Electric System Rebate, reducing it from $2.15/watt down to a $1/watt temporarily until May 1st, 2011. This incentive only applies to SRP customers who are looking to put in a Solar Electric System before that date. This solar electric rebate reduction makes installing a Solar Water Heating System an even more appealing step towards an energy efficient home. Solar hot water has about 3 to 4 times the payback that solar electricity does and is much cheaper to install.

Another great way to lower your electric bill is an Energy Star Audit of your home. SRP is going to announce that they will be joining the Energy Star Audit Program. APS currently offers an Energy Star Home Audit and it appears that SRP may be starting their program as soon as November or December. This program should match APS in funding and mirror the APS program which includes up to a $1,500 rebate to fix a home’s energy efficiency issues. The current APS Energy Audit Program offers a comprehensive energy audit, including a blower door test of the home, for a discounted $99. You also receive 10 CFL light bulbs, a low flow showerhead and three sink aerators for the $99. The blower door test identifies any leaks in the building envelope, including the duct system, which will help identify the fastest return on investment in making your home more energy-efficient.

I'm really excited about SRP announcing this program because this is a great first step for an SRP customer to make their home energy efficient. The Energy Audit combined with solar hot water would be a very good first step to take this year for an SRP homeowner. One important note about the federal energy efficiency tax credit, it does expire this year as of December 31. So if SRP does announce their energy audit program, time is of the essence. With the federal efficiency tax credit and SRP funding, 60% of an energy star retrofit can be covered, which dramatically shortens the payback time for such an important step.
