Dr. Hahna was Panelist at "Tuning Into Health: MT's Impact Across PA"

Dr. Hahna was a panelist at the roundtable "Tuning Into Health: Music Therapy's Impact Across Pennsylvania" on April 14, 2026. This event was held at West Chester University and included remarks by the President & Dean of the Wells School of Music at West Chester University, MT faculty & students at West Chester University, as well as state officials such as Senator Carolyn Comitta, Secretary Al Schmidt (Department of State), and Mike Chmielewski (Director of the Department of State Office of Legislative Affairs). The event included demonstrations of music therapy, testimony on the power of music therapy to support a variety of clinical needs, and the need to reduce barriers to accessing music therapy in the Commonwealth of PA.

Throughout the semester, some of our MT students have been participating in Interprofessional Education (IPE) events with other departments on campus, such as a mini-IPE event at George Junior Republic & Clean Moore with SW, RT, & psychology! We also had the pleasure of participating in a large IPE event with all of the health care professions at SRU. This is a great way for our students to learn about how to work with different professions.

SRU Faculty-Student Research Highlight: Music Therapy with Cancer Survivors

The SRU Music Therapy Program is grateful for the funding we received from Slippery Rock University to conduct a faculty-student research grant with 5 music therapy students, 2 SRU faculty, and 1 on-site music therapist to better understand the use of music therapy with cancer survivors in an outpatient cancer center. The following individuals were part of our research team:

MT Student Researchers: Ashley Loss, Lilla McNerney, Anna O'Malley, Emily Rossi, & Elizabeth Schooley
SRU Music Faculty: Amy Baker & Nicole Hahna
On-Site Music Therapist: Rhiannon Rieger

As a result of our research grant, we were able to better understand the experiences of survivors of gynecological cancer in outpatient music therapy. We are grateful to have had the opportunity to present the findings of our qualitative research at the following events:

Music Therapy Student Recitals

This semester, many of our music therapy students held recitals on their major instrument, which was not required. These students include Alyssa Packer (trumpet), Jocelyn Bentley (saxophone), Ben Johnston (oboe), and Anna O'Malley (flute). Our students learn piano, guitar, voice, and percussion and, on top of all that, dedicate so much time and energy to an additional primary instrument.

Their recitals included a wide variety of music, including chamber, jazz, classical, and more. We loved to see the music therapy influence in Alyssa and Jocelyn's when they pulled out the guitar and vocals! We are so proud of their hard work and musicianship. Choosing to host a recital is going above and beyond our department requirements and we are so proud to have students who challenge themselves and work so hard.

Music Therapy Department Takes on PMEA!

We would love to extend a huge congratulations to our department members who presented this year the the Pennsylvania Music Educator's Association Conference in Erie, PA! Our undergraduate head, Dr. Nicole Hahna, presented "What Music Educators Need to Know About Music Therapy". Her co-presenters included fellow music therapists, Allison Broadderick and Amber Haer. This presentation was a wonderful introduction to music educators about the field of music therapy and how it relates to music education. This is Dr. Hahna's third presentation of the semester and we are so proud.

Additionally, one of our MT students, Ben Johnston, co-presented with Dr. Jonathan Helmick about equitable programming in ensembles. Since 2020, the SRU Wind Ensemble has been working to diversify their music library to include underrepresented composers. This project has allowed for commissions and purchases of more music to widen the repertoire given to students.

Voz Versatil: Enhancing Functional Voice Skills for Music Therapists

This past week, Dr. Candelaria and Dr. Hahna presented at the MAR-AMTA 2024 Conference and we are so proud! They educated their colleagues on how to work with voice training for music therapists. Dr. Candelaria used examples from her studies with MT students in Voice Methods.

Voice Methods is a second semester, freshman year course for MT students to explore how to use their voice in music therapy-specific environments. Students learn up to three songs, two in English and one in Spanish, and perform them for the rest of the class. The students work on these songs throughout the semester in the style of a master class with Dr. Candelaria.

Dr. Candelaria and Dr. Hahna collaborated to present and it was a highly attended session at conference. Congratulations to our wonderful professors!

Spring 2024 Music Therapy Club Benefit Concert Recap

Spring 2024 Music Therapy Club Benefit Concert

A big thank you to all of our wonderful students who performed and volunteered for our Spring 2024 Music Therapy Club Benefit Concert! We had a wonderful concert full of a bizarre variety of acts, as per usual. This concert is such a wonderful chance for our students to share their musical talents that we don't encounter at our typical performances. Our students formed bands to play country music, bluegrass tunes, and some original works! It was so wonderful to see music therapy, music education, and music performance students alike participating in this concert and collaborating with one another.

I particularly appreciated the impromptu bluegrass performance at intermission, two original works premiered (by Natalie Miller and our lovely professor Vern), and a variety of bands playing works by Toby Keith, the Eagles, and more!

The money raised from this concert supports our students in being able to attend the annual MAR-AMTA conference. Conference is coming up soon, from April 4th-6th. We are so grateful for everyone who donated to our club and help give us the opportunity to attend conference to learn about groundbreaking work in our field!
