Podcast 158. Apps para mi Movil/ Apps for my Phone

ESCUCHAR / LISTEN

Hace unos años mi teléfono no tenía cámara, ni conexión a Internet ni, por supuesto apps y hoy, acabo de contarlas, tengo 64. La verdad es que habitualmente utilizo alrededor de 15 pero en este momento sólo quitaría 4 o 5, el resto las puedo necesitar en otro momento.

Hay apps para todo, tengo una aplicación que me dice que tiempo va a hacer, otra para hacer fotos y subirlas a Facebook o twitter, otra para correr que me dice la velocidad, calorías, tiempo… incluso tiene GPS y puedo ver el mapa del recorrido al terminar.

Tengo una aplicación para las listas y notas de mis alumnos, otra para leer el periódico, para buscar y reservar un hotel, para comprar un billete de tren o autobús, para hacer la lista de la compra, una agenda, para saber al instante el título de la canción que está sonando en la radio de mi coche, libros para leer, guias de viaje con todo lo que necesito si voy a una ciudad desconocida, metro, autobús, restaurantes, itinerarios.

Si necesito una calculadora, un despertador, una aplicación que sincronice mi telefono con el ordenador o mi IPad, un diccionario, todo lo que necesito está en mi móvil, incluso si tengo que esperar tengo “apalabrados” para continuar la partida que empecé hace unos días, la partida o las partidas ya que te permite jugar más de una de forma simultánea.

He leído que existen 500.000 aplicaciones, el eslogan de apple decía “Hay una aplicación para eso” que es lo mismo que decir “hay aplicaciones para todo”. La mayoría están hechas por las empresas de telefonía aunque cada vez hay más gente que hace su propia aplicación.

De hecho, quizá dentro de algunas semanas puedas descargar este podcast utilizando una app, es muy probable que ssl4you se convierta en una aplicación disponible en appstore dentro de poco tiempo, y yo tendré entonces 65 aplicaciones en mi teléfono.

Apps for my phone

Some years ago my Mobile telephone had no camera, no Internet conexión and of course no apps and today, I’ve just counted them, I have 64 apps on it. The truth is that I usually use about 15 of them but now I would only delete 4 or 5, I can need the others in any moment.

There are apps for just about everything, I have one to tell me the weather, another to take pictures and upload them to facebook or twitter, another to run that tells me the speed, calories I burn, time…it even has a GPS and I can see a map with my running when I finish.

I have an application for my students names and marks, another to read the newspaper, to look for and book a hotel, to buy a train or bus ticket, to do shopping list, an agenda, to know the title of the song that’s playing in my car, books to read, travel guides with everything I need if I travel to an unknown city, underground, buses, restaurants, routes.

If I need a calculator, an alarm clock, an application to sync my smartphone with my computer or my iPad, a dictionary, everything I need is in my smartphone, even if I need pass the time I have “scrabble” to keep on playing the match I started some days ago, the match or the matches as it allows you to play more than one at the same time.

I’ve read that there are 500.000 applications, apple slogan was “there’s an app for that” what they meant that they have an app for everything. Most of them are made by smartphone manufacturers but there are most and most people making their own app.

In fact,in some weeks you may download this podcast using an app, it’s quite probable that ssl4you become an application available in appstore in some time, and then I’ll have 65 applications in my mobile phone.

En una escala del 1 al 10, ¿Qué puntuación te darías? . Te propongo hacer un test para saber si realmente eres honrado o no. He leído en un periódico que 2000 adultos contestaron esta encuesta y los resultados demostraron que somos menos honrados de lo que creemos.

Para que sea fiable debes ser totalmente sincero al contestar, cada vez que yo diga una frase debes anotar uno de estos números:

1. Nunca 2. Casi nunca 3. A veces 4. Siempre

Cuando termines cuentas los puntos que has conseguido y podrás comprobar tu nivel de “honradez” al final de este podcast.

Podcast 156. Vivir en una Cueva/ Living in Caves (Escuchar / Listen)

¿Donde te gustaría vivir? ¿Una casa en el campo? ¿Un apartamento cerca del mar? ¿Un piso en el centro de una ciudad?

¿Y vivir en una cueva?

Pues aunque te parezca increible hay gente que vive en cuevas, en mi país incluso hay gente que las compra, las restaura y las usa como segunda casa, para pasar fines de semana y vacaciones.

En España hay cuevas en Andalucía, algunas han estado abandonadas durante años pero ahora están siendo excavadas de nuevo y restauradas. Tienen electricidad, cañerías, cocinas modernas, baños, dormitorios. Algunas tienen hasta 10 habitaciones.

Forman parte del paisaje natural y todas ellas son únicas, cada una es diferente. Y No sólo hay casas, también hay teatros, hoteles, restaurantes, spas… En Guadix, en Almería, en la provincia de Granada, en el Sacromonte.

Son más baratas de construir que una casa normal, tienen paredes y techo que hay que arreglar pero no construir, están mejor aisladas y son más calidas en invierno y mas frescas en verano, una cueva en Granada mantiene una temperatura constante de 19-20 grados centígrados, algo muy excepcional si tenemos en cuenta que en la ciudad de Granada se pasan los 40 grados en verano y nieva en invierno.

En los barrios del Albaicín y el Sacromonte, la gente vive en cuevas desde hace siglos, probablemente fueron los árabes los primeros que construyeron estas cuevas cuando vinieron a España.

Mi única duda es ¿Qué pasa si tienes claustrofobia? No me parece fácil meterme en una cueva por muy cómoda y calentita que sea.

Living in caves

Where would you like to live? A house in the country? An apartment near the sea? A flat in the city centre? And, how about living in a cave?.

Perhaps you think it’s amazing but some people live in caves, in my country there are people who buy them, rebuilt them and uses them for weekends and holidays.

In Spain there are caves in Andalucía, some of them were abandoned for many years but now local builders are excavating and restoring them. They have electricity, plumbing, modern kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, spas.. In Guadix, in Almería in Granada Province, in Sacromonte…

They are cheaper to build than ordinary houses since the walls and the ceiling are already there, they´re better insulated and they are warmer in winter and cooler in summer, a cave house in Granada maintains a steady temperature of around 19-20 degrees centigrade year round.

This is quite exceptional if we think that in Granada summertime temperature pass 40 degrees and it snows in winter.

In Albaicin and Sacromonte neighbourhoods people have lived in caves for centuries, the Arabs probably brought the tradition with them when they came to Spain.

I have a doubt, What happens if you have claustrophobia? I don’t know if I would be able to live in a cave house, even it’s comfortable and warm.

Podcast 155. Garabatos/ Doodles (Escuchar/ Listen)

Coge un papel y un boli y sin pensar, dibuja algo.

¿Que es lo primero que dibujas? ¿Estrellas? ¿Casas? ¿Flores? Los grafólogos afirman que los garabatos que hacemos sin pensar siempre expresan algo.

Si dibujamos flores es porque somos personas amables y centradas. Las flechas indican que somos decididos y ambiciosos y que nuestros objetivos son claros., lo mismo que cuando dibujamos estrellas.

Mucha gente dibuja aviones, barcos, mariposas, pájaros, abejas. Todos ellos son símbolos de libertad, quien los dibuja es alguien que no quiere estar atado a nada, que le gusta cambiar de ciudad, vivir cosas nuevas.

Si escribes tus iniciales es porque te gusta ser el centro de atención y si haces cuadrados o circunferencias es porque quieres tener el control en todas las situaciones.

Ojo con los puntos enlazados porque indican ansiedad y las telas de araña que simbolizan la sensación de sentirse atrapado y el deseo de escapar de una situación.

Y si eres de esas personas que dibujan caras, las expresiones que dibujes en ellas te estarán delatando, si tu cara es sonriente es porque confias en los demás y los demás confían en ti y si dibujas una cara enfadada es porque no te fías de nadie.

También es importante el tamaño del garbato, si lo dibujas en el centro o en las esquinas, si el trazo es suave o muy marcado, etc, etc.

Asi que la próxima vez que garabatees algo, ten cuidado, quizá la persona que está a tu lado lo esta analizando.

Doodles

Get a piece of paper and a pen and without thinking, draw something.

What do you draw? Stars? Houses? Flowers?. Graphologists think that doodles we draw without thinking always mean something.

If we draw flowers it’s because we are friendly and centric person, Arrows are a sign of a determined, ambitious person with clear goals in mind, the same as if we draw stars.

A lot of people draw planes, boats, butterflies, birds and bees. All of them are signs of freedom, the person who draws them doesn’t want to be tied down, someone who likes moving to another place, living new experiences.

If you write your initials it’s because you enjoy being the centre of attention and if you draw squares or circles it’s because you want to take control of the situations.

Be careful with dots forming a pattern can indicate anxiety and spiders’ webs can symbolise a feeling of being trapped and the desire to escape from a situation.

And if you are one of those who draw faces, the expressions you put on them will be betraying you, if you draw smiling faces suggest you sees good in others, angry faces mean you are mistrustful of others.

It’s also important the size of the doodle, if you draw it in the centre of the page or at the corners, if the intensity of the mark is light or very heavy, etc, etc

So, next time you doodle, be careful, maybe the person next to you is analysing it.

Podcast 154 Traducir/ Translate (Escuchar/ listen)

La mayoría de las palabras o expresiones pueden ser traducidas en otros idiomas, pero a veces, la idea o el concepto no existe en la otra lengua y resulta complicado traducir ciertas palabras.

Por ejemplo, en español existe la palabra “morriña”, la empleamos para describir un sentimiento que se tiene cuando alguien se marcha o cuando nos alejamos de un lugar en el que queremos estar, una especie de tristeza y nostalgia por esa persona que ya no está con nosotros o ese lugar en el que nos encontramos cómodos y felices. No existe en inglés ninguna palabra que exprese este sentimiento y sería difícil traducir la palabra “morriña” sin usar varias palabras , no hay término equivalente.

Otro ejemplo de palabra imposible de traducir es “regodearse” que la empleamos para describir un sentimiento de felicidad o alegría que tenemos cuando nuestro “enemigo” lo pasa mal, cuando le van mal las cosas, por ejemplo cuando le sale mal un examen o cuando no le va demasiado bien en el trabajo. No hay palabra inglesa que exprese todos estos sentimientos.

A veces las palabras no existen en un idioma porque no se necesitan, se ha descubierto una tribu en el Amazonas que no tiene vocabulario para decir la hora, nada que tenga que ver con palabras como “horas, minutos, días, meses o años” porque no los necesitan, ni siquiera tienen formas de decir la edad aunque tienen nombres para referirse a las distintas etapas de la vida y seguramente tienen miles de palabras para plantas y animales que nosotros nunca entenderíamos.

¿Hay algunas palabras o expresiones en tu idioma que son difíciles de traducir al castellano?

Problems with Translation

Most words and expressions can be translated into other languages fairly easy, but sometimes, the idea or concept doesn’t exist in the other language and then it gets complicated to translate some words.

For example, we have the word “morriña” in Spanish, we use it to describe the feeling you get when somebody leaves or when we leave a place we love, a kind of sadness and nostalgia for that person that is not with us any more or that place where we feel comfortable and happy. There isn’t in English a word that express this feeling and it would be very difficult to translate the word “morriña” without using several words, there isn’t one-word equivalent

Other example of word impossible to translate is “regodearse” , we use it to describe a feeling of happiness or joy we have when our “enemy” suffers, when things don’t go well, for example if he does really badly in an exam or when he doesn’t success at work. There’s no one word in English which sums all that up.

Podcast 153. ¿Eres ordenado? Are you Organized? (Escuchar/ Listen)

¿Eres ordenado? ¿Tienes el armario lleno a rebosar, la cocina revuelta y montones de papeles encima de tu mesa? Si la respuesta es si, te recomiendo un libro que en diez pasos te enseña a organizar tu vida, o bien contratar los servicios de un profesional que va a tu casa o a tu oficina y te dice como debes organizarte.

También podría ser una solución echar un vistazo a la sección de “productos para ordenar” como cajas, cajones, archivadores, carpetas, etc que hay en tiendas como Ikea.

Aunque te parezca mentira “El orden” se ha convertido en una industria multimillonaria basada en lo que casi todos opinamos “ser desordenado no es bueno”, sin embargo algunos expertos opinan lo contrario y creen que mantener todo ordenado nos hace perder demasiado tiempo y que el desorden tiene sus ventajas.

Parece ser que las personas cuya casa está desordenada, son con frecuencia más tolerantes que los que son muy pulcros y también son mejores padres. Existe un libro “Un Perfecto Desorden, Los beneficios Escondidos del Desorden” en el que sus autores afirman que el orden no siempre tiene como resultado “familias felices”, en una encuesta que los autores hicieron se demuestra como uno de cada 12 matrimonios se rompieron porque cada miembro de la pareja tenía una idea muy diferente sobre la conveniencia de ser ordenado o desordenado.

En el lugar de trabajo hay que tener cierto orden, esta claro, pero un poco de “lo” también es positivo. Cuando metes demasiadas cosas en los cajones, a menudo te olvidas de ellos, a mi al menos me ocurre. Joe Brand, psicólogo, opina que una mesa desordenada a menudo implica “creatividad”, en sus estudios asocia “mesas desordenadas” con salarios altos y salarios más bajos con mesas pulcramente limpias.

Resumiendo, el desorden no siempre es síntoma de desastre, por tanto deberíamos dejar de preocuparnos tanto por el orden y la organización y preocuparnos por las cosas que son realmente importantes en la vida. No creo que dejemos sin trabajo a los profesionales del “orden” , o quizá si...

Other solution could be to have a look to the “products to keep everything in its place” section like boxes, drawers, files, etc that you can find in shops like Ikea.

Despite it seems a bit weird “tidiness” has become into a multimillionaire industry based in the idea that all of us have that “to be disorganized is not good”. However some experts think the opposite and they think that to keep everything tidy makes up to lose time and the tidiness has some advantages.

It seems that people whose house is untidy, are usually more tolerant than those that are too tidy and they are also better parents. There is a book “The perfect Untidiness, the Hidden Benefits of Untidiness” , in it the authors explain that tidiness tidy is not always a sign of “happy families” in a survey they did it was demonstrated that one of twelve marriage couples was broken because each of them had a different idea about if it was convenient or not to be organized.

At work it’s necessary to be organized, but a bit “mess” is also positive. When you put too many things in a drawer you often forget them, at least it happens to me. Joe Brand, psychologist, thinks that an untidy desk usually means “creativity”, in his studies he associates “untidy desks “ with high salaries and low salaries with tidy desks.

To sum up, untidiness is not always a sign of disaster, so we should stop worrying about the tidiness and the organized things and to be worried only about the important things in the life. I don’t think we are going to make these professionals to be banned from their jobs, or maybe ….

Los colores influyen en nosotros mucho más de lo que creemos, color y humor están muy relacionados, incluso pueden hacer que cambiemos de idea en algunas ocasiones. Cada color tiene un significado y es muy curioso observar como algunas de las empresas más influyentes usan un color u otro dependiendo de sus intereses.

El rojo, por ejemplo, es un color que se asocia al amor, al peligro, dicen que produce sensación de hambre, muchos restaurantes tiene este color en sus logos: McDonald’s Burger King.

El verde nos relaja, parece que es porque es uno de los colores que nos resulta más fácil de asimilar, los hospitales a menudo emplean este color y hay muchas empresas que lo utilizan en sus logos: Starbucks, Rolex, Aston Martin, Carlsberg.

El azul transmite seguridad, aplomo, seriedad. Es un color que transmite confianza, muchos bancos son azules como Barclays o BBVA y también compañías como MoviStar o PayPal, el color azul se utiliza mucho en las redes sociales: Facebook, Tuenti, Skype, Myspace, Twiter, todos ellos tienen azul en sus logos

El amarillo es un color brillante que llama la atención, se dice también que ayuda a concentrarse y se emplea mucho en notas, libros de texto y cuadernos

El rosa tiene un efecto tranquilizador, he leído que algunos vestuarios de los campos de deporte tienen este color en las paredes para que los jugadores no salgan con agresividad al campo.

El negro transmite autoridad y poder y se emplea mucho para vestir porque nos hace más estilizados. También puede dar un aspecto misterioso o diabólico a quien lo lleva, pensad en Drácula, por ejemplo. Algunas de las compañías más famosas que emplean el negro son Adidas, Hugo Boss y Chanel.

El Blanco se usa mucho en decoración porque es un color luminoso, neutro que queda bien en cualquier sitio. Es el color de las novias y también el color de las batas del personal de los hospitales, da sensación de limpieza, de higiene. Es un color que nos inspira confianza, Apple y Nintendo lo emplean .

El naranja transmite felicidad, energía y calor, EasyJet, Jazztel y Orange lo emplean en sus logos.

¿Cuál es tu color favorito? ¿Qué color prefieres a la hora de comprar ropa? ¿Crees que algún color te favorece más que otro?.

Mi respuesta a todas estas preguntas es “El Verde”, el verde es sin duda mi color favorito.

Black is the colour of authority and power and we use it a lot in clothes as it makes people appear thinner, it also can make the wearer seem mysterious or evil, think of Dracula for example. Companies with Black in their logos are Adidas, Hugo Boss and Chanel.

White is popular in decoration because it’s a Light neutral colour that goes with just about everything, it’s Bride’s colour and also White is the colour worn by medical staff as it symbolise hygiene and cleanliness. Apple and Nintendo use it.

Podcast 151. Escribir a Mano/ Handwriting (Escuchar/ Listen)

¿Crees que es posible saber como es una persona analizando su manera de escribir? Yo creo que si, durante algún tiempo estuve muy interesada en este tema y analizaba cada frase, cada firma. No soy ninguna experta pero leí muchos libros de grafología y descubrí que existen hasta 300 rasgos diferentes en la escritura de puño y letra.

Tu firma puede revelar mucho sobre tu personalidad, si la subrayas, es porque buscas el reconocimiento de los demás y eres engreído. Como ejemplo, Sting, Picasso, Elvis Presley y Paul McCartney subrayaban su firma.

Pero no sólo la firma es interesante, también lo es tu forma de escribir, si tu escritura tiende a ir hacia arriba es porque eres optimista y alegre, por el contrario si va hacia abajo puede que sea un síntoma de tu pesimismo.

Si tu letra se inclina a la derecha puede que sea porque eres sensible, cariñoso y extrovertido, si se mantiene vertical quizá sea porque siempre tratas de controlar tus emociones y si se inclina a la izquierda puede interpretarse como que eres una persona fría y reservada.

También es importante el tamaño, si tu escritura es pequeña es porque eres capaz de concentrarte con facilidad y mantener la concentración durante mucho tiempo, y por el contrario, si tu escritura es grande puede querer decir que te distraes con mucha facilidad.

Si mantienes más o menos el mismo espacio entre letras es porque eres una persona segura de ti misma y si tus letras están demasiado juntas puede querer decir que no te gusta demasiado estar con gente.

La grafología no es una ciencia exacta, por supuesto que no, pero algunas empresas utilizan tests grafológicos para contratar a sus empleados y las agencias de contactos la emplean para estudiar compatibilidades.

También la policía utilizaba la grafología para analizar las notas en los rescates, hoy día nadie escribe a mano, así que seguramente la letra no volverá a ser una pista.

Do you think it’s possible to say something about someone by analysing their handwriting?I think so and for some time I was very interested in this and analysed every signature, despite I’m not an expert I read some books of graphology where you can find until 300 different features of handwriting.

A person’s signature can reveal a lot about their personality. when you underline it, it’s because you like public recognition and have feelings of self-importance. Sting, Picasso. Elvis Presley and Paul MacCarney underlined their signatures.

But not only signatures are interesting, also the way you write, if you handwriting slopes upwards it’s because you are optimistic and cheerfulness, however, writing that slopes downwards could be a sign of pessimism.

Letters that are slanted to the right may be show that you are emotional, warm and outgoing, letters that are vertical could mean that you are trying to control your emotions, and letters that slant to the left may indicate that you are a cold, reserved person.

Also the size is important, if your handwriting is small it’s because you have an ability to concentrate for long periods of time, and the opposite, if your handwriting is large may indicate that you distract easily.

Average spacing between letters is considered a sign of self-confidence and if the letters are closed together may indicate that the person is uncomfortable with other people.

Of course graphology isn’t an exact science but some companies use graphology tests to hire people and dating agencies to evaluate people’s compatibility.

Also the police used graphology to analyse ransom letters, today nobody uses handwriting, so it won’t be a clue any more.

¿Alguna vez has pensado en donar tus órganos para que sean transplantados? Hay mucha gente en mi país que lo hace. España es el país con más donantes del mundo, 34 donantes por cada millón de habitantes.

No obstante, los médicos dicen que la demanda es mucho mayor que la oferta y hay aún una larga lista de pacientes esperando un trasplante, alrededor de 100.000 personas.

El hecho de hacerse donante de órganos antes o después de morir es sin duda, uno de las decisiones más generosas y desinteresadas.

Sin embargo no es fácil conseguir que alguien done los órganos de un ser querido cuando muere.

Todo el proceso necesita de mucha sensibilidad y cuidado y las personas que lo llevan a cabo son conscientes de que, a pesar de necesitar esos órganos, los intereses de la familia del donante están siempre por encima del interés por conseguir esa donación.

En una encuesta hecha en España hace unos meses se dice que de 200 familias que en un primer momento se negaron a donar los órganos de un familiar muerto, el 78% cambiaron de opinión una vez que un equipo de psicólogos y profesionales especializados en donaciones les explicaron el proceso con detalle.

Quizá la clave de ser uno de los países pioneros en trasplantes se deba a la Organización Nacional de Trasplantes (ONT) que cuenta con profesionales repartidos en 139 centros en toda España.

He leído algunas historias increibles de gente que, después de estar esperando tiempo y tiempo, por fin recibe esa llamada de teléfono que cambiará su vida.

Ahora que estamos sanos y llenos de vida quizá sea el momento de empezar a plantearnos si queremos convertirnos en donantes algún día.

Organ Donation

Have you ever considered donating your organs after death for transplation? Many people in my country do. Spain leads internationally with 34 deceased donors per million population.

Althought doctors say that organ demand exceeds supply and there are still long lists of patients waiting for transplants, around 100,000 people.

the act of donating organs, either before or after detah, must be considered as one of the most generous and selfless decision.

However, it’s not easy to get somebody donates organs of a dear ........ when he dies. The whole process needs to be handled with great care and sensitivity and the people concern know that, despity the necessity of getting those organs, family needs of the potential donor are alwyas over the interests of organ procurement.

A survey made in Spanish some months ago it’s said that of 200 families that declined to have their relatives’ organs donated, 78% changed their mind after the process was explained in detail by psicologists and donation professionals.

Maybe the clue to be one of the leaders in donation is the well planned organization (ONT) with professionals in 139 units across the country

I’ve read some incredible stories about people who, after being waiting for a long time, finally get this phone call that will change their lives.

Now that we are healthy and full of life may be a good momento to start thinking about being donors one day

Cuando se habla de lo Beatles todos tenemos alguna canción “preferida” o “inolvidable”, al menos los de mi generación. Se separaron hace 40 años, sólo la mitad de ellos siguen vivos y sin embargo siguen siendo noticia y estando entre los grupos que más dinero ganan.

Hasta su logo es un símbolo, a propósito, ¿sabías que el diseño del logo costo cinco libras?. También son un símbolo algunas de las portadas de sus discos, como Sargent Pepper y Abbey Road que en un principio iba a llamarse Everest, pero abandonaron la idea por no viajar hasta este lugar para hacer la portada del disco y decidieron finalmente llamarlo Abbey Road, el nombre de la calle donde estaba el estudio de grabación, y hacerse una foto en su paso de zebra que ha sido declarado “patrimonio nacional”.

Después de 40 años todo lo que rodea a los Beatles sigue siendo noticia, incluso viejas historias como la que leí hace poco que contaba que John Lennon no fue nunca un buen estudiante, fue expulsado del colegio por mal comportamiento:

“ Sin duda su conducta es irrecuperable…. es un caso perdido,…. hace el payaso en clase…. hace perder el tiempo a sus compañeros….” Sorprendente descripción de alguien que se convertiría en una de las personas más influyentes e importantes de su pais.

Ringo y Paul han continuado su carrera en solitario, colaboran con otros grupos y sus opiniones siguen siendo tenidas en cuenta, no hay más que ver las últimas declaraciones de Ringo que comentó que apenas iba a Liverpool y no puso buena cara cuando le preguntaron si volvería a vivir allí , sus fans llegaron a quitar la cabeza del batería de un monumento hecho en la ciudad.

Yo no soy una de esas fans que gritan o escriben a sus ídolos pero reconozco que cuando pisé Abbey Road sentí algo especial.

When we talk about the Beatles all of us have a favourite or unforgettable song, or at least people from my generation have it. They split up 40 years ago, only half of them are still alive, however they are often in the news and they are among the highest earning bands.

Even their logo is a symbol, by the way, did you know the logo design cost 5 pounds. The album covers are also a symbol, like Sargent Pepper and Abbey Road that was originally going to be called Everest, but the band went off the idea as they had to travel to the place to shoot the album cover, in the end they decided to name the album “Abbey Road” as the name of the street where the recording studio was and they shot the zebra crossing which has been granted grade listing.

After 40 years, everything around Beatles keeps on being news, even old stories like the one I read some days ago which told that John Lennon wasn’t a good student, he even was expelled from school for bad behaviour “ Certainly on the road to failure… hopeless… rather a clown in class…. Wasting other pupils’ time” Amazing description of somebody who would later become one of the most influential and important in his country”

Ringo and Paul have gone onto a successful solo career, they collaborate with other bands and their opinions are still important, just as an example the controversy that Ringo caused when he claimed he rarely returns to Liverpool, and appeared disgusted when he asked if he would ever move back there. Angry fans in the city cut off the head of the drummer of the monument made in the city

I’m not one of those fans that cry or write letters to their idols but I have to admit that when I step Abbey Road I felt something special

¿Tienes una cuenta en Facebook? Mary Simmonds acaba de hacerse una, escribió un diario para contar su experiencia. quiero leertelo.

Lunes: Desde hoy soy usuario de Facebook, he encontrado aquí a alguna gente que conocía y en unas horas he conseguido juntar siete amigos. ¡Nunca me he sentido tan popular! Me pregunto si Steve, mi compañero de piso de la universidad estará por aquí….

Martes: ¿Sabes una cosa? He encontrado a Steve y he recibido muchos mensajes de bienvenida en mi “muro”. He quedado con Steve para tomar una cerveza después de no habernos visto durante años.

Lo he pasado muy bien con Steve, hemos estado hablando de utilizar Facebook en el móvil y me ha presentado a un montón de amigos, algunos viejos compañeros de clase, otros amigos nuevos, nos hemos hecho unas cuantas fotos y las hemos subido a Facebook.

Miércoles: ¡Que Desastre! Mi madre también está en Facebook y ha visto mis fotos de anoche bailando encima de la mesa, no se si mi padre las habrá visto pero no me gustaría nada

Jueves: Tengo un mensaje de mi novio, por lo visto no he cambiado las opciones en mi Facebook y todo lo que escribo o subo lo ve todo el mundo. Me enseña a manejar la privacidad.

Viernes: Es hora de actualizar mi estado, estoy un poco aburrida y escribo “ mi trabajo es muy aburrido, tengo muchísimas ganas de que llegue el fin de semana”. Nada más escribirlo aparecen un montón de mensajes en mi muro y a muchos de mis amigos “les gusta” lo que he dicho. Es sorprendente que a 70 personas les guste mi comentario.

Sábado:¡Buenas noticias! ¡Tengo 100 amigos! Pero… ¿que pasa? He recibido un mensaje de alguien a quien no le gusta lo que digo ni le gusto yo, repaso la lista de 100 amigos pero no consigo saber quien es exactamente, la crítica es un poco dura, esto no lo tenía previsto,

Domingo: Me levanto y miro mi página de Facebook, me preparo un café y vuelvo a mirar mi página de Facebook, Me ducho y vuelvo a mirar mi página de Facebook, antes de salir echo un vistazo a mi página de Facebook. ¡Creo que me estoy obsesionando!, creo que es hora de terminar con esto antes de que esto termine conmigo, así que borro mi cuenta, no es tan fácil como crearla pero al fin lo consigo. Que alivio, vuelta al sencillo, práctico y viejo e-mail.

Tengo un mensaje, “Un amigo te ha invitado a unirte a Twitter”….. Ni hablar.

Facebook Phobia

Monday: From today I’m a facebooker, I’ve found a few people here I used to know and in some hours I’ve got seven friends. I’ve never felt so popular! I wonder if Steve, my old university flatmate Steve is on here.

Tuesday: Do you know? I’ve found Steve and I’ve received lots of welcoming messages on my “wall”. I have met Steve for a drink after not seeing him for years.

I’ve enjoyed Steve a lot, we have been talking about using Facebook for our phone and we have met other friends, some of them old classmates, some new friends, we have taken some photos and have been uploaded to Facebook.

Wednesday: Disaster! My mum’s on Facebook and has seen my photos dancing on the table last night, I don’t know if my father has seen them. I wouldn’t like.

Thursday: There’s a message from my boyfriend, it seems I haven’t changed my settings and everything I write or upload is shown to everybody. He teaches me to set up my privacy.

Friday: Time to update my status, I’m a bit bored and write “ Work is boring. Can’t wait for the weekend!”. A minute later I receive a lot of messages on my wall, most of my friends “like” what I’ve written. It’s amazing that 70 people like my comment.

Saturday: Good news! I’ve got 100 friends!. But… what happens? I’ve got a message from somebody that doesn’t like my comments neither me, I look through my friends list to try to work out who it’s but I don’t remember who is he, the comment is a bit cruel, I had no idea that this could happen.

Sunday: I wake up and check my Facebook page. Make coffee and check my Facebook page again, I have a shower and check the page once more, before leaving home I also check my Facebook. This is becoming an obsession! I think it’s time to end it all before it takes over my life. I delete my account, it’s not as easy as to create it but I get it at last. What a relief, back to good, old, simple e-mails.

I have got a message : “A friend has invited you to join Twitter”… No way.

Hace unos meses decidí que era hora dar un aspecto diferente a mi casa, decidí cambiar el salón, uno de los dormitorios, el estudio, la cocina y un baño y ¿Qué sitio mejor que Ikea para convertir tu casa en una casa acogedora por un precio razonable?

Comprar en Ikea tiene sus ventajas, para empezar tiene, como ya he dicho, precios razonables, he encontrado un buen sofá por 499 euros lo había desde 299. He comprado una estantería de la serie Billy, una de las mas vendidas, según me dijo uno que estaba comprándola también y una mesa con sus 4 sillas para el salón por 59 euros cada una.

Para la cocina he comprado una mesa, seis sillas y armarios con las puertas de cristal, me han atendido y ayudado a diseñarla y ¡me han dado una garantía de 25 años!

El armario del dormitorio me ha costado 629 euros Y había tres colores para elegir, he comprado también la cama, el colchón, almohada, edredón, cojines, incluso las cortinas para la ventana.

Sin embargo hay algún inconveniente, no siempre es fácil montar los muebles, hay que seguir el dibujo y siempre tienes dudas de si faltará algo, nunca falta y siempre acaba encajando todo pero lleva su tiempo.

Mucha gente compra en Ikea y es muy habitual encontrarte con tus muebles en casas de amigos o casas que aparecen en televisión, pero los muebles son bonitos, y no son caros y a mi personalmente no me importa que los tengan los demás.

IKEA Houses.

I decided some months ago that it was time to give my home a new look. I decided to change the living room, one of the bedrooms, the study, the kitchen and the bathroom and there is no better place than Ikea to make your home warm and cosy without spending much money.

Buying in Ikea has clear advantages. For a start, it’s cheap, I’ve found a nice sofa by 499 euro, althought there were some by 299. I’ve also bought a bookcase, the chain’s Billy bookcase, one of the most popular, told me one of the shoppers who was also buying it, and a table with four chairs by 59 each.

I’ve bought a table, six chairs and some cupboards with glass doors for the kitchen, they helped me to design it and it comes with a guarantee too, 25 year warranty!

The wardrobe cost 629 euro and they have three different colours to choose, I have also bought the bed, the mattress, the pillow, the duvet, the cushions, even the curtains for the window.

However there are some downsides. Assembling the furniture isn’t always easy, you have to follow the drawing and you always have doubts if all the pieces you need are there, it never happens and at the end everything is put together, but it takes its time.

A lot of people buy in Ikea and it’s very common to see your furniture in your friend’s or your neighbour’s home, even on television, but the furniture looks good and affordable and I personally don’t mind if everybody has the same.

¿Te gusta el chocolate? El chocolate se come en todas partes y gusta a todo el mundo y no sólo por su sabor, está demostrado que tiene ciertos efectos terapéuticos.

Yo había comprobado que el chocolate me sentaba “bien” pero por lo visto no se trata sólo de una sensación, el chocolate hace que nuestro cerebro produzca opiáceos naturales que calman el dolor y nos hacen sentir bien, y no sólo eso, también produce una sustancia química llamada “anandamide” que contribuye a ese sentimiento de bienestar.

Hay tantos tipos que el problema es elegir, cuando voy al supermercado y me pongo delante del chocolate siempre me quedo pensando ¿Cuál cojo? Chocolate negro, chocolate con leche, chocolate blanco…

Mi hermana que es una experta dice que necesitamos usar los cinco sentidos a la hora de elegir el chocolate.

Dice que la vista es importante porque el buen chocolate tiene un brillo especial. aconseja frotar el chocolate con el dedo y olerlo, si es bueno deberá tener un olor fuerte. El oído también cuenta, cuando partes un trozo de chocolate debe sonar como si rompieras un trozo fino de madera. Y en cuanto al tacto dice que el buen chocolate debe deshacerse en la boca y quedarse como un líquido espeso y por supuesto el más importante de los sentidos a la hora de comer chocolate “el sabor” que dejando al lado las preferencia de cada uno el buen chocolate no debe ser ni demasiado dulce ni demasiado amargo.

Los sentidos ayudan, por tanto a distinguir un buen chocolate del que no lo es

Asi que la próxima vez que vayas a comprarlo no te olvides de ninguno y a la hora de comerlo, sientate, relajate y disfruta con todos los sentidos.

Chocolate

Do you like chocolate? I think people eat chocolate all over the world and not only because of the taste, it has been proved that chocolate has some therapeutic effects.

I had checked that chocolate makes me feel well but it’s clear tit’s not only a feeling I have read that chocolate makes our brain to produce natural opiates that stop pain and make us feel good, and not only that, it also produces a chemical called anandamida that seems. to give us that happiness feeling.

When I go to the supermarket and I stand in front of the chocolate section I always wonder: which one am I going to buy this time? Black chocolate, chocolate with milk, white chocolate…

My sister, who is an expert, says that you need five senses to choose chocolate. Sight: Good chocolate has a shine to it. Smell: she says you must rub the chocolate with your finger and smell it, if the chocolate is good it should have a deep smell. Sound: when you break a piece of chocolate it must sound similar to that of a thin piece of wood being broken. Touch: The chocolate should melt easily in your mouth becoming a thick liquid and of course, the most important of the senses when you eat chocolate” taste” : Good chocolate should not taste too sweet or too bitter.

Senses help to distinguish a good chocolate from a bad one. So, the next time you go to buy it, don’t forget any and when you start to eat it, sit down quietly, relax and enjoy with the five senses

¿Cuánto tiempo hace que sacaste el carnet de conducir? ¿Lo pasaste a la primera? ¿Fue difícil?

Yo lo saqué hace mil años y los exámenes han cambiado aunque no tanto como cabría esperar después de tanto tiempo.

El examen sigue teniendo dos partes, una teórica y otra práctica. La parte teórica cambiará a partir de octubre, el 50% de las preguntas estarán relacionadas con la “seguridad vial”, la mecánica no será ya tan importante y el aspirante deberá conocer aspectos como la influencia del alcohol en la conducción, el coste de los accidentes de tráfico, etc.

La parte práctica, como es lógico, consiste en sentarse en el coche y conducir. La persona o personas que examinan se sientan atrás y van dando instrucciones al “nervioso” conductor que debe señalizar adecuadamente todas las maniobras, colocarse en el lado correcto, ajustarse a la velocidad que este establecida en cada tramo, aparcar y no cometer ningún error grave o realizar maniobras peligrosas.

Es difícil mantener la calma, controlar el coche, escuchar con atención y contestar lo que te pregunta el que te esta examinando y este “suplicio” que ahora dura más o menos media hora, en el futuro serán 50 minutos.

Yo recuerdo mi examen de conducir como una pesadilla, tenía miedo de todo, de meterme por dirección prohibida, de subirme al bordillo, de no ser capaz de aparcar. La verdad es que no es tan difícil como parece pero a los 18 años y sin ninguna experiencia tienes la impresión de que te va a costar un triunfo conseguir el carnet de conducir y al final resulta ¡que no era para tanto!

Driving Test

How long ago was it since you took your driving test? Did you pass first time? Was it difficult?

I took mine a thousand years ago and exams have changed but not so much after so much time.

The exam still has two parts, a theory test and a practical part. The theory part will change next October, at least 50% of the questions will be about safe driving and the mechanical part will be less important. There will be questions about the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol, the cost of traffic accidents, etc

The practical part, obviously, consists mostly of driving. The examiner or examiners sit at the back and give instructions to the “nervous” driver who must signal at the right time, make sure he is in the correct line, stick to the speed limit park and not make any serious or dangerous driving errors.

It’s very difficult to remain calm, to control the car, listen carefully and answer the questions the examiner asks you and this torture, that now takes half an hour, will last 50 minutes in the future.

I remember my driving exam as a nightmare, I was afraid of everything, I was afraid of driving in the wrong direction, to mount the kerb, afraid of not being able to park the car, but at the end it’s not so difficult as you imagined but when you are 18 and have no experience at all you have the feeling that it’s going to be nearly impossible getting your driving license the first time you try it..

¿Cuándo fue la última vez que fuiste a un restaurante buffet? Según las estadísticas cada vez comemos más en este tipo de restaurantes. La verdad es que son baratos y algunos tienen ofertas increíbles “Come todo lo que puedas por sólo12 euros” “Sin límite, 8 euros con la bebida incluida”.

En mi país los hay de todas clases, la cadena Fresc Co ofrece sobre todo verduras y pizzas, los Wok ofrecen comida asiática, hay buffets de comida tradicional, los hay para todos los gustos.

La ofertas se basan en la cantidad y en la variedad. Algunos restaurantes de este tipo ofertan hasta 101 platos diferentes, al menos eso dice la publicidad. Hay platos fríos y calientes, carne, pescado, ensaladas, sándwiches, pasta, patatas… sabores dulces y salados para mezclar, comida que se prepara en el momento, comida ya preparada.

A mi me gustan mucho los buffets, será porque me gusta combinar dulce con salado, carne con mermelada o fruta, probar diferentes tipos de pan, mezclar de todo en esos grandes bols de ensalada y probar , sobre todo probar de todo un poco.

No suelo comer a dos carrillos, enseguida tengo la sensación de estar llena, pero me gusta mucho la variedad y estos restaurantes la tienen. Mi marido piensa exactamente lo contrario, a el le gusta sentarse tranquilamente y que le sirvan la comida, odia levantarse a llenar el plato, se queja de que la comida se queda fría y no le gustan las mezclas.

Así que tenemos que alternar cuando salimos a comer y no llevo muy bien la cuenta pero me parece que comemos bastantes más veces en restaurantes tradicionales en los que te sirven en mesa y con mantel.

Buffet Revival

When was the last time you went to a buffet restaurant? According to a recent survey, we eat more and more at these restaurants. The truth is that they are cheap and some have amazing offers “Eat as much as you can for just 12 euros” “ unlimited portions, 8 euros , one free drink included”

In my country there are different kinds of them, Fresc Co chain offers vegetables and pizzas, Wok chain offers Asian food, there are buffets specialized in traditional food, there are buffets to suit all tastes.

Offers are based in quantity and variety too. Some of these restaurants offer more than 101 different dishes, at least that is what adverts say. There are cold and hot choices, meat, fish, salads, sandwiches, pasta, potatoes… sweet and salad and salad to mix, food that is prepared in front of you, food cooked in advance.

I love buffets, it must be because I like mix sweet and salad, meat with marmelada and fruit, to taste different kinds of bread, to mix everything in those big bols for salad and taste, mainly taste everything.

I don’t usually stuff myself , I feel myself full after the first course but I like variety a lot and these restaurants have a lot of food to choose. My husband thinks exactly the opposite, he likes to sit down quietly and be served, he hates to go for the food, he complains because the food is often cold and he doesn’t like mixes

Leer es una buena forma de aprender un idioma, aprendes palabras nuevas, revisas las que ya sabías y te vas quedando con miles de expresiones y palabras nuevas sin apenas esfuerzo.

Al leer trabaja el subconsciente, no hay que hacer ejercicios, ni memorizar reglas gramaticales, todo es mucho más fácil y natural, el lenguaje desfila ante tus ojos y queda registrado en tu cerebro. Fácil, ¿verdad?

De todos modos hay algunos trucos que tenemos que tener en cuenta, el primero: debes leer sólo cosas que realmente te apetezca leer, revistas, periódicos, páginas web… las posibilidades son infinitas, sólo es cuestión de encontrar algo que nos guste, algo que nos motive. También es importante que elijamos el nivel adecuado, es mejor empezar por algo sencillo, incluso algún libro que ya hayamos leído en nuestro idioma, al no tener que preocuparnos por entender todo el contenido, leeremos más relajados y aprenderemos más fácilmente.

Podemos también empezar por leer periódicos, en lugar de libros, es fácil seguir una noticia que previamente conocemos. Las revistas son también muy útiles, podemos elegir entre cientos de temas: negocios, ropa, animales, deportes, ordenadores, cocina…temas concretos que nos interesen y nos resulten familiares.

Mi segundo consejo es: no utilices el diccionario constantemente, lee sin que te importe no saber todos los significados, relee el párrafo para comprender la idea general y saltaté las palabras que no entiendas, si buscas todas las palabras y expresiones que desconoces, leer se convertirá en un trabajo en lugar de ser algo entretenido y agradable. Eso si, puedes anotar las expresiones nuevas o las frases que te gustaría utilizar , pero intenta no perder la concentración en lo que estas leyendo y ponte pequeñas metas. Por ejemplo, leer 10 o 15 páginas diarias e ir aumentando cada semana, o cada mes.

Leer puede ser muy útil cuando estamos aprendiendo un idioma. Pasar un buen rato leyendo y aprendiendo sólo depende de ti.

Learn a Language by Reading

Reading is a great way to learn a language, you learn new words, revise previously taught structures and absorb thousands of expressions and new words without any effort.

By reading, learning takes place subconsciously, there are no exercises to do, no grammar rules to learn, it’s all natural and easier. The language flows in through your eyes and gets registered in your brain. It’s easy, isn’t it?

Anyway, there are some tricks we have to take into account, the first one: You must read only things you want to read, books, magazines, newspapers, websites… the list has no end the main thing is to (it’s a matter of finding) something that we like, something that motivates us to read. It’s also important to choose the right level, it’s better to start with something easy, a book we have already read in our own language, we won’t have to be worried about understanding all the content, we’ll read relaxed and we’ll learn easily.

We can also read newspapers at first, it’s easy to follow news we already know. Magazines are also useful, we can choose among hundreds of topics: business, clothing, pets, sports, computers, cooking… and read about topics that we are interested in and are familiar for us.

My second advice is: don’t use the dictionary all the time, it’s not important to new all the words, re-read the paragraph to understand the idea and skip words you don’t understand, if you look up all the words and expressions you don’t know, reading will become a work more than something enjoyable. Of course, you can make a note of any new words and phrases that you like to use, but try no to break your concentration too much and set yourself mini objectives. For example, read 10 or 15 pages a day and increase the number each week or month.

Reading can be very useful when we are learning a new language, to enjoy and have fun reading and learning it’s up to you.

Podcast 142. Meter la Pata. Gaffes (Escuchar/ Listen)

Nadie es perfecto. Todos cometemos errores al escribir. Yo cada vez que escribo un texto para mis alumnos o pongo un examen. Siempre… bueno, casi siempre lo reviso pero aún así, se me escapa algún error y ellos se dan cuenta inmediatamente.

Normalmente son cosas sin importancia aunque en el último examen la cosa fue un poco diferente. Tenía puesto en el ordenador el idioma “español” y escribía el examen en inglés con lo cual corregía automáticamente las palabras que podía, juntaba y separaba letras y en una de esas ocasiones la frase “she decided to put all clothes…” escribió “she decided to puta ll clothes”, y “puta” es una de esas palabras que llamamos “tacos” y que los alumnos detectan rápidamente, tienen una especie de radar para estas palabras.

Nada serio pero si un motivo para estar repitiendo la broma un par de días.

Y como nadie es perfecto he usado mi ejemplo para demostrar que lo mío no es nada comparado con lo que ocurrió en Australia donde tuvieron que devolver a la imprenta nada menos que 7,000 copias de un libro de cocina en el que en una receta de pasta aparecía: añadir “salt and freshly-ground people”, en lugar de “pepper” y eso a pesar de que el libro fue revisado por un corrector, pero como hemos dicho, nadie es perfecto.

Otro ejemplo de errores desastrosos ocurrió en Chile que después de utilizar miles de monedas con el nombre del país mal escrito, en las monedas de 50 pesos acuñadas en 2008, aparecía “Chiiie” en lugar de Chile, se dieron cuenta del error y como no hay mal que por bien no venga al final no sólo no se han retirado de la circulación sino que se han convertido en piezas de coleccionista.

Gaffes

All of us make mistakes when we type, I often do when I type a text or an exam for my students. I always revise it, or nearly always but even doing it , there is always a mistake that escapes my notice and they realize immediately.

They are usually unimportant mistakes although the one I made in the last exam was a bit different. I usually have “Spanish language” in my computer and while I was typing in English the computer corrected the words it didn’t understand as Spanish words, it joined and separated words and in a moment the sentence “she decided to put all clothes…” the computer corrected to “She decided to puta ll clothes” and “puta” is one of those words we call in Spanish “tacos” and the students immediately detected it, they have a special radar for these words.

Nothing serious, of course, but it was a good joke to repeat again and again for a couple of days.

Nobody is perfect and I have used my own example to prove that my mistakes are not important compared to what happened in Australia where a company had to reprint 7,000 copies of a cook book where one pasta recipe listed: Add “salt and freshly-ground people” instead of “pepper” despite the whole book was revised by the proofreader but as I said before, nobody is perfect.

Another example of typing mistake disasters took place in Chile where after thousands of coins were used with the name of the country spelt wrongly, the 50 peso coins were issued in 2008 and instead of Chile, the coins had “Chiiie” on them, realised the mistake, but as every cloud has a silver lining, at the end the coins have become collector items and there are no plans to take them out of circulation

¿Eres de los que te gusta desayunar en una taza de Bart Simpson o ponerte un sombrero de Britney Spears? ¿Acabas de comprarte una cazadora con el logo de tu equipo favorito? ¿Compras posters, pegatinas y gorras cada vez que vas a un concierto?.

Camisetas, cuadernos, vídeo juegos, el merchandising es un buen negocio. Hasta hace poco los Simpson y Star Trek eran los que más productos ofrecían a sus seguidores. Ahora son los vampiros Bella y Edward, que han convertido Twilight en una industria multimillonaria, desde juegos para la Wii, un libro de cocina (amor al primer mordisco), vendas para heridas, llaveros, un sujetador twilight y hasta una cortina de baño con el mismito Edward Cullen a tamaño natural, imagínate ducharte mientras el vampiro te observa. Esta claro que el merchandising no tiene límites.

El caso es que hasta ahora giraba en torno al mundo del cine, la música, personajes de televisión, pero con Obama ha llegado también al mundo de la política. La tienda on line e-Bay ofrece de todo: monedas conmemorativas, camisetas, platos, material deportivo, cigarros, caramelos, hasta puedes pasarte un buen rato con el comic de Obama Spiderman, ha llegado la Obama- manía, hasta el punto que los abogados de la Casa Blanca están intentando restringir el uso de la imagen del Presidente Obama, eso si, con mucho tiento para que no disminuya ni un ápice el entusiasmo que los americanos sienten por su presidente.

A menor escala pero con cierta relación, en mi país, si tu visitas Asturias, lugar de donde procede la Princesa Leticia, podrás comerte unas galletitas con forma de corazón o unos bombones llamados “letizias” que algún pastelero inventó para conmemorar el hecho.
Eso si, nunca se sabe si comerte la galleta significa que “estás a favor” o “estás en contra” de lo que representa. Eso, cada uno sabrá.

Merchandising Mania

Are you one of those who likes to have a coffee in a Bart Simpson cup?. Do you wear a Britney Spears hat? . Have you bought a jacket with your team’s logo on it? Do you buy posters, sticks and caps when you go to a concert?

T- shirts, notebooks, video games, merchandising is a profitable business. Till now the Simpson Family and Star Trek offered a whole range of products for the fans. But now the vampires Bella and Edward have turned Twilight into a multi million dollar industry, from games for Wii, a cook book (Love at First Bite) bandages for injuries, keyrings, a Twilight bra and even a Edward Cullen shower curtain, imagine yourself having him watching over you as you take a shower. It’s obvious that merchandising has no limits.

The thing is that till now it was focused on cinema, music, television characters, etc, but with Obama it has arrived to political world. On line shop e-Bay offers everything: commemorative coins, t-shirts, plates, sports equipment, cigars, sweets, you can even enjoy a comic of Obama Spiderman. Obama Mania is here, and it’s so spread that White House lawyers are trying to restrict the use of President Obama’s image but being careful not to squelch the enthusiasm that the public has for the president.

On a small scale but related with this, in my country, if you visit Asturias, the place where Princess Leticia comes from, you will be able to have some heart-shaped biscuits or some chocolates called “Letizias” that a baker invented to commemorate the event.

Podcast 140. Spotify es la Solución (Escuchar/ listen)

La industria discográfica está en crisis. Hace unos años si querías un disco no tenías más remedio que comprarlo. Las compañías discográficas manejaban el sistema de distribución y fijaban los precios pero llegó la piratería y empezó a afectar a las ventas.

Todos hemos compartido archivos de música en la red en alguna ocasión, hay muchos programas gratis para hacerlo y la mayoría pensamos que “compartir” archivos de música en Internet, de vez en cuando, es “aceptable”, sólo un 20 % cree que no lo es.

Comprar un CD en una tienda sigue siendo caro y la música está a nuestro alcance en la red. Lo cierto es que muchas tiendas de discos han tenido que cerrar y las compañías de discos han perdido millones.

Pero parece que la solución a este problema está cada día más cerca desde que Spotify fue lanzado al público en 2008. Se trata de un servicio de difusión de archivos de música. Los usuarios podemos buscar por artista, álbum o género y hay aproximadamente 6 millones de canciones, además existe la posibilidad de crear tus propias listas y editarlas para otros usuarios o pedir que te cree una lista de canciones basada en tus preferencias.

Sé que Spotify no está disponible en todos los países, en mi pais si puedes acceder aunque es necesaria una invitación, supongo que lo hacen para limitar el número de usuarios. Puedes acceder a todas las canciones, pero hay anuncios entre las canciones y es esta publicidad la que genera dinero y permite a spotify pagar un “royalty” por cada canción. Además existe la posibilidad de pagar una cantidad mensual como suscriptor, alrededor de 10 euros y escuchar las canciones sin anuncios.

Con el dinero de la publicidad y de los suscriptores spotify paga al sello discográfico y parece que esta puede ser la solución para todos. Música más barata pero no gratis. La idea es buena.

Spotify to the Rescue

Music industry is in crisis. Some years ago if you wanted to have a CD you had no option but to buy it. Record labels managed the system of distribution and they fixed the prices but the piracy appeared and this began to affect sales.
Everybody has shared music files in the internet, there is free software to do it and most of us think that to share music files from time to time is “acceptable”, only 20 percent thinks that it’s “never acceptable”

To buy a CD in a shop is expensive and music is within reach in the net, but it’s true that many music shops have gone out of business, and record companies are losing millions, but it seems that the solution to this problem is clearer every day from Spotify was launched for public access on 2008, it’s a music streaming service. The users can browse for music by artist, album or by genre and there are about 6 million tracks, besides you can also create your own playlists and edit them for other users or ask for a list of songs based on your preferences.

I know that Spotify is only available in some countries, you can access in my country but you need an invitation, I suppose it’s to limit numbers. You can access to all the songs but advertisements are played periodically between songs and advertising generates money and allows Spotify to pay “royalty” per stream. You can also pay a monthly subscription fee of about 10 euros and to listen to the songs without any interference from adverts.

Spotify pays the record labels using money from subscriptions and from advertising and this can be the solution for all. Cheaper music but not free music, this can be a good idea.

Podcast 139. Locos por el Futbol/ Football Vocabulary (Escuchar/ Listen)

¿Te gusta el fútbol? Si la respuesta es “si”, estás de enhorabuena, durante un mes podrás ver fútbol a diario. Si la respuesta es “no” este podcast no es para ti.

Durante este campeonato de la copa del mundo de fútbol, que va a celebrarse en Sudáfrica oiremos un montón de palabras y expresiones que hoy quiero repasar aquí con vosotros, seguramente todos sois unos expertos en vocabulario futbolístico pero estoy hoy aquí por si hay alguien que aún no sabe muy bien como se dice en castellano “offside” “fuera de juego” o “free kick” “tiro libre”, o simplemente quiere hablar de fútbol en mi lengua.

Empecemos por la palabra “campo” que es donde se juegan los partidos, sus nombres los asociamos a las ciudades y son conocidos mundialmente, aunque no seas muy aficionado al fútbol si oyes hablar del Nou Camp, inmediatamente piensas en Barcelona, si te hablan del Bernabeu en Madrid y si dicen que “marcaron o fallaron un gol de penalty” o que “ganaron en la tanda de penalties” en La Bombonera, sabes que estaban jugando en Argentina.

“La portería” es donde los jugadores pretender meter los “goles” y “el portero” o “guardameta” es el encargado de evitarlo. Normalmente los goles los meten los “delanteros” mientras que “los defensas” intentan que estos no “marquen”.
Además están los “extremos o alas” y los “centro campistas” que son los que preparan los ataques. Y para organizar todo esta el “árbitro” que emplea un “silbato” para marcar las “faltas” y reparte, cuando es necesario, “tarjetas amarillas” o “rojas”. En ocasiones “arbitrar” no es tan fácil como parece , si el árbitro duda si hay “penalty” o el jugador se ha “tirado a la piscina” consulta con “el juez de línea” que vigila desde los lados del campo.

Los jugadores pueden protestar si la decisión no les parece justa pero las reglas dicen que deben abandonar el campo inmediatamente si son expulsados por el árbitro, según Mr Blatter, el presidente de la FIFA, los errores son parte del juego, y la decisión del árbitro es definitiva.

Y una vez explicado todo esto, sólo me queda decir que “ojalá gane La Roja este campeonato del mundo, !que ya va siendo hora!

FOOTBALL CRAZY

Do you like football? If the answer is “yes”, you are lucky, because for a whole month you’ll be able to watch football diary. But If the answer is “no”, this podcast is not for you.

During this South Africa world cup football championship we will hear a lot of words and expressions that I want to review with you , you are probably experts about football vocabulary but I’m here today in case there is still someone who doesn’t know well how to say “offside” or “free Kick” in Spanish, or simply wants to talk about football in my language.

Let’s start with the word “pitch”, it’s the place where the matches are placed, we associate their names with the cities and they are known worldwide, it doesn’t matter if you are not very fond of football, if you hear somebody talking about Nou Camp, you immediately think in Barcelona, if somebody talks about Bernabeu, you think in Madrid and if they say “they scored a goal or they failed a penalty shoot” or “they finally won in a penalty shootout” in La Bombonera you know that they were playing in Argentina

“The goal” is the place where the footballers try to score “goals” and the “goalkeeper” is the one who tries to avoid it. The goals are usually scored by the “strikers” and the “defenders” are the players who try to prevent them to do it. There are also “wingers” and “midfielders” who are important setting up attacks. And to organise everything we have “the referee” the person who manages the game and uses a whistle for fouls and gives out, when it’s necessary, “yellow” or “red cards”. Sometimes it’s not as easy as we think, if the referee has doubts about a “penalty” or if the player “dives” he asks the “assistant referee” who monitors from the sides .

Players can complain if they think that the decision is not right but the rules say that a player must immediately leave the pitch when he has been sent off by the referee, according to Mr Blatter, The FIFA president, mistakes are just part of the game and the referee’s call must be seen as final.

And now that I have explained everything there is only one thing I want to say “I wish La Roja won this world championship, it’s about time!”

Podcast 138 . Libro Electrónico/ E-book (Escuchar/ Listen)

¿Tienes un e-book? ¿Estás dándole vueltas? ¿crees que acabarás comprándolo?

He estado pensando y he preguntado a algunos amigos que lo tienen porque la verdad es que no acabo de decidirme.

Esta claro que tiene ventajas, quizá la más importante sea “el peso” si estás acostumbrado a leer en el transporte público, enseguida te darás cuenta de que poder coger el libro y pasar las páginas con una sola mano es una gran ventaja, también si te gusta leer en la cama o tumbada en el sofá, un libro grande acaba pesando un montón.

Tengo una amiga que viaja mucho y es una gran lectora, siempre lleva 5 o 6 libros en la maleta cuando va de vacaciones, estoy pensando que para ella sería una buena solución comprar uno, me han dicho que puedes llevar cientos de libros en uno.

Un compañero de trabajo, que se lo regalaron en Navidad, dice que además de estas ventajas una de las mejores cosas que tiene, es que puedes aumentar el tamaño de la letra y la verdad, ahora que empiezo a tener problemas para leer esas letras tan pequeñas de las ediciones de bolsillo, creo que me vendría bien. Además tiene una función de búsqueda de personajes o lugares, que si estás trabajando sobre un libro puede ser muy útil.

Entre los pocos inconvenientes que he encontrado está la falta de disponibilidad, no todas los libros que se publican están en formato digital, aunque me han hablado del Proyecto Gutenberg que ofrece descargas de cientos de libros gratis en la red.

Quizá el mayor inconveniente será no poder escribir mis propias anotaciones en el margen, además siempre me ha gustado subrayar frases o marcar párrafos, ya se que mucha gente no es partidaria pero a mi me gusta escribir en los libros y esto lo tengo bastante difícil con el e-book..

Ya veremos, tendré que adaptarme, son más las ventajas que los inconvenientes.

e-books

Have you got an e-book? Are you thinking about buying it? Do you think you will buy one at the end?.

I’ve been thinking and I’ve asked some e-book owners because I still haven’t made up my mind . It’s clear that it has advantages, maybe the most important is the weight, if you are used to reading in the public transport, you know that to be able to hold the book and turn the pages with one hand is a great advantage and an e-book is definitely more confortable to read in bed or if you’re lying on a sofa.

I’ve a friend who travels a lot, she is a good reader and she always carries loads of books in her luggage, I think it would be a good idea for her, they have told me that you can store hundreds of books on them.

A colleague, who received one at Christmas, has told me that apart from the fact that, it’s great the function for increasing font size, and the truth is that since I’ve starting to have problems to read small letters in pocket-sized books it would be very useful. Besides, they also have a search function to look for characters or places which can be very useful if you are working on a book.

Among the e-book owners one of the biggest complaints is the lack of availability, not all the published books are available in electronic form, however I’ve heard about “Project Gutenberg” that offers hundreds of titles all of them free to download.

Maybe the biggest disadvantage will be not to be able to write my own notes in the margins, besides I’ve always been fond of underlining sentences to mark paragraphs. I know that many people don’t agree but I like to write on my books and this will be imposible using e-books.

I will have to adapt myself since there are more advantages than disadvantages.

Volveré Pronto

Debido a problemas de trabajo he estado un tiempo alejada de aquí.
Preparar los podcasts, grabarlos y subirlos a la red me lleva mucho tiempo y no he podido últimamente dedicarle todo el que necesita.

Espero volver pronto con nuevos podcasts, nuevas canciones y nuevos textos. En junio quiero retomar esta actividad que tantas satisfacciones me ha dado siempre.

Os pido disculpas por este tiempo y espero que volvais a seguir mis capítulos una vez que todo vuelva a la normalidad.

Podcast 137. Tiempo Loco /Crazy Weather (Escuchar/ listen)

Hablar del tiempo ha dejado de ser una conversación vacía de contenido, últimamente el tiempo se está convirtiendo en la primera noticia del día.

Era más fácil cuando sabíamos a que atenernos y hacía mucho frío en invierno, frío en otoño, calorcito y lluvia en primavera y un calor asfixiante en verano.

Y es que a todos, de una forma u otra nos afecta el tiempo, al menos a mi me afecta. Si me levanto, miro por la ventana y me encuentro con un día lluvioso, sin proponérmelo, me pongo de mal humor, gruñona; mientras que si entra sol por la ventana mi humor cambia y me siento bien, contenta, exagerando un poco, “radiante de felicidad”.

Últimamente mi humor cambia por momentos, igual que el tiempo, lo que empieza siendo un buen día puede convertirse en un día lluvioso y frío y a la hora de comer estoy trabajando muerta de frío y sin paraguas. Los que somos sensibles a los cambios de tiempo corremos el riesgo de sufrir varios cambios de personalidad al día, desde que nos levantamos hasta que nos vamos a la cama.

El tiempo está cambiando, nieva en Abril, las temperaturas suben o bajan 20 grados de la noche al día o de un día para otro y, hablando ahora en serio, seas o no sensible a los cambios de tiempo, estos cambios bruscos nos afectan a todos.

En mi idioma no tenemos una expresión que explique esto tan bien como en inglés que cuando estas enfadado o deprimido dicen que estas “under the weather” mientras que si tienes “a sunny disposition” es porque te encuentras bien, estás contento.

En castellano sólo recuerdo una frase que tiene que ver con el tiempo y el humor “A mal tiempo buena cara” una buena manera de decir que uno no debe dejarse influenciar por las nubes, la lluvia, la nieve y el sol o los problemas, ya que el dicho tiene mucho que ver también con tratar de superar las situaciones complicadas con una buena disposición de ánimo.

De cualquier manera lo mejor es que estamos en primavera, la naturaleza está empezando a demostrarlo aunque sigamos necesitando el abrigo y la bufanda cuando vamos a trabajar por las mañanas.
¡Y el buen tiempo me sienta tan bien!

Crazy Weather

Lately, to talk about weather is not a small- talk conversation any more, weather has become the first news. It was easier when we knew that it was frozen in Winter, cold in Autum., warm and rainy in Spring and terribly hot in Summer. Because people in one way or another are affected by the weather, at least I’m affected.

If I get up, look through the window and find a rainy day, I have no intention of doing it but I become in a bad mood and groan and if the sun shines through the bedroom window my mood changes and I feel well, happy, exagerating a bit, “I am glowing with happiness”.

Lately my mood changes at the drop of a hat, like the weather, what starts off as a pleasant sunny day, can easily become a rainy, cold day and at lunch time I am terribly cold at work and without umbrella.

People like me who are weather sensitive lately run the risk of changing our personality several times during the day, from we wake up until we go to bed at night.

Weather is changing, it snows in April, temperatures raise or drop 20 degrees from night to midday or from one day to another, and talking now seriously, you can be or not be sensitive to weather changes but these sudden changes affect everybody.

In my language we haven’t an expression that reflects this as clear as in English that when somebody feels unhappy or depressed they say he is under the weather. And if you have a sunny disposition it is because you feel well, you are cheerful.

I only remember one idiom in Spanish related to weather and humor “A mal tiempo buena cara” a good way to say you mustn’t be influenced by the clouds, the rain, the snow or the sun or by the problems you have, as the idiom also refers to get through the difficult situations with a good mood.

Anyway, the best is that we are in Spring now, nature is coming back to life althought we keep on wearing coats and scarves when we go to work in the morning.
And I feel so well with good weather!
