Hello, everyone! We are super excited for this year in Youth Ministry at St. Joe's!

As most of you know, we have made a HUGE addition to the staff this year by adding Amy Schille as the Assistant Director of Youth Ministry, as well as the Director of the Youth Band. Amy's talent and experience in youth ministry, music, and retreats are already proving to be an amazing asset for our growing program. In music, Amy is quite talented. She is working on building the youth band for the 7pm Sunday masses, as well as writing some fresh mass music to go along with the new translation of the missal.

Amy is also taking charge of the Middle School youth group, the WALK. She has worked as a youth minister in the past, both in official and volunteer capacities, and has incredible experience and ideas for making religious education interactive, fun, and spiritually deep.

Our youth group numbers have grown to almost double what they were last year, and there is absolutely no way we could do it without her dedication and ability to go above and beyond!

When you see her around, be sure to welcome her to the parish and let her know what a great job she is doing!

We are meeting at Spare Time Lanes at 4pm this Sunday. Bring $10 for bowling and pizza, or $5 if you just want one or the other.

Creationfest NW!

We will be taking a group of students to Creationfest NW in Enumclaw from July 20-23. This is a 4-day event, including Christian band concerts, camping, and about 20,000 other teens from around the area. Cost is $200 per person, and covers everything except any souvenirs you may want (they'll be selling t-shirts and other paraphernalia). St. Joe's Youth have taken on the 3-5pm slot every Tuesday from now until Easter to go to Planned Parenthood and pray for an end to abortion. Everyone is welcome to join us! Teens need to grab a permission slip here and bring it with you. One slip will cover you for the remainder of this campaign. Bring a friend, a rosary, or both!

Also, if you'd like to order a t-shirt, be sure to let me know what size you want, and to bring $10 on Tuesday.

Dance Time! Fundraiser

We are holding a dance and social as a fundraiser for our youth on March 12th, from 8-midnight in Dillon Hall. Lots of music and some beverages will be on tap, and the public is welcome. Bring your friends!!

Our DJ will play a huge variety of music, and will be taking requests! Also, ballroom and swing dance instruction will be available from 7-8 pm, just for fun.

$5 will be charged at the door, and no one under 18 will be allowed in. Beer and wine will be available, ID's will be checked, and permit will be posted at the event.

High School Lock-In

We'll be having a lock in for high school students on Feb 25th. Join us on Friday night in the gym at about 6pm, and we'll wrap it up by 10 am on Saturday. Print out the permission slip here and bring it with your parent's signature on it along with $10 to cover food costs. Friends are more than welcome, just make sure they get a permission slip signed, also.

Looking forward to some fun times! :)

Volunteers Needed!!

Hey, everyone...anyone? Well, if you're reading this, you should know that we really really really need some adult volunteers to come work with our youth. If you're a teen at St. Joe's, I'm sure you know someone who would be awesome to see at youth group. If you're a parent, you should think about giving it a shot. Most of our current volunteers have students involved in the program. If you're just a random parishioner, give me a call and I'll get you the details.

I promise, if you show up once we won't "rope" you in. Come for a week. Come for two weeks. And then decide if this is something you feel would be worth dedicating some of your time to. It's a grand total of about three hours per week, but the seeds we're planting in the next generation will have eternal ramifications. Pray about it.

Youth Group Changes

Ok, guys, we're gearing up for the new programs! I'm pretty much super excited. I hope you're looking forward to it, too. For one, we get to sleep in on Sundays now. For two, we're going to have a chance to actually get to know each other. I'm excited to get to know more of you who haven't been able to come to Youth Group in the past. If we haven't had time to hang out yet, give me a call and we'll schedule some coffee time. :) If we have...well...let's hang out again. ;)

I'm going to be out of town for a convention until Jan 12, but then I'll be back with more energy and more ideas, so it should be an awesome first month of the year.

Our FIRST eQuip (high school) night will be on Sunday, Jan 16th. We'll start at 5 with some dinner, and we'll have a pretty laid-back night, considering there's no school that Monday. Then at 7 we'll all head over to mass together. After that day, we will start having a more regular schedule each night, with dinner, games and some learning time.

Also, high schoolers, don't forget to come hang out on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school until 4ish. It's just chill time. And then Wednesdays, we'll have Delve!, our new Faith program. Come for the first one on Jan 12 at 6pm to help decide what we're going to be doing with this program. It will be a little more in-depth and intense of a study time, but we'll have fun, too. Then, each weekend we'll try to come up with some sort of an activity to do. If you have suggestions, leave a comment!

Middle school - I'll be seeing you on Monday nights from 6-8pm. Same deal as high school, tho. We'll have dinner, some game time, and then some discussion time. Should be fun!

We are trying to get more people on the leadership team, so that we can do more activities and you guys will have more of us to talk to. If you know anybody who would make a great leadership team member, encourage them to sign up. And you could always give me their contact info, too! I'll call and let them know that one of the teens thought they'd be awesome. Who could turn that down?! :)

World Youth Day Fundraisers!!!

Ok guys here's the deal. The first $1000 per person is due by the end of this month. DO NOT DECIDE YOU CANNOT GO BECAUSE OF THIS! Come talk to me if it's a major issue for your family! Personally I missed out on, well, just about everything that cost more than $25 when I was in High School, because my family just couldn't afford it. I don't want this to be an issue for any of you!

SO, we need to kick up the fundraising like ASAP.

The first one will be on Thursday Oct 7. There is a Kennewick home game vs. Hanford. We will be charging for parking and selling water and Monster energy drinks. I need some people to come before hand (by 3:30pm) to make posters. Then we need up to 10 people (6:30-10:30) to man both main entrances to the lot.

AFTER the game, we will be having our first 5th Quarter after party. Try to get as many people there as you can! I'll be bringing fliers to Youth Group on Wednesday so you can start handing them out. The cover charge for 5th Quarter will be $2. You can either pay this or help out. (St. Joe's people only...Friends should pay the cover.) If you do help out, it needs to be for a minimum of 1 hr. (We'll have food, music, games, the coffee shop will be open, and we're trying to get either RockBand or a Wii game to play on the big projector screens. And I'm open to other ideas.) Jobs available include: set up (5-7pm), running the video game tournament, taking money at the door, selling food/drinks, clean up (11-11:30pm) etc. Let's make the first one awesome so that more and more people come later in the year!

The next fundraiser will be Oct. 15 and 16. We will be showing the movie To Save A Life at 7pm both days and 3pm on Saturday. We'll need helpers to set up chairs at 5 on Friday, take money/tickets 6:30-7 both days and 2:30-3 on Saturday, and sell concessions throughout all three showings.

IF we have enough people to help convert the movie theater into a 5th Quarter, we will do another one on the 15th for the KeHS football game vs. West Valley. But people need to help sign up if that's the case.

Each hour worked will be rewarded (not each person) so that it will be fair. This is how it will work: If Jill helps for 3 hours, Dave for 2 hours and Mike for 1 hour, and we make $1200, then Jill will have $600, Dave $400, and Mike $200 added to their accounts. Make sense?

ALSO... for those who are interested in helping but aren't interested in WYD, you can definitely come work for community hours too. Just bring the slip, and I'll sign off on it.

Take Comfort in Rituals...

So I was in Starbucks the other day, and they were promoting their seasonal flavors under the phrase, "Take Comfort in Rituals." I was astounded! How cool is it that our secular culture is craving what the Church offers, and they don't even know it!

Our God is so amazing, and he has provided us with everything our hearts desire, even including ritual, which involves familiarity, comfort, and peace. Imagine if you were to walk into mass next Sunday, and instead of the usual green chausable, Fr. was wearing a Hawaiian shirt and bermuda shorts. Then, instead of reading from the Bible, he read to us from Shakespeare, said "Think about it," and sat down. After a few minutes of silence, he then stood up, said, "Ok, everyone. Great Mass. Thanks. Have a good week," and walked out. Would you feel like you'd been to mass? Would you feel like you had really taken time out of your week to worship God? I wouldn't. Obviously, this is a ridiculous, extreme example of what happens when ritual is removed from our lives, but the discomfort we feel when thinking about that happening is telling us something. It says, "The 'norm' is important. It's good to follow a schedule, a rubric. It's calming, it allows for peace."

KICKOFF Sunday!

This Sunday, the 12th is Kickoff Sunday. Instead of having Religious Ed classes or youth group, all high school and middle school students and their friends are invited to come celebrate with us from 2 to 5 pm. We will be having bbq food, cake, games, prizes, and a bounce house. It should be tons of fun. I'm really excited about this year, and I can't wait to meet you all! Oh yeah, and this counts as a class for the year, so make sure you sign in!

New Youth Minister

Hey, guys, this is Julie. I'm the new full-time Youth Minister at St. Joe's! We are going to have an awesome year. The kick-off for both Middle School and High School will be September 12 at 2 pm. We will have a BBQ, games, prizes, live praise and worship, and a few surprises... :) It's going to be an awesome time!

In the meantime, I would love to start getting to know you all. Feel free to stop by the parish office, I'll be there every morning this week from 9-noon, and some afternoons. Busy Month!

Hello hello!

January is going to be a busy month! We're starting with our Christmas Party / Dinner Meeting this Wednesday at 7:30pm. Let's start the year off right!

Next week (January 13th) we're going to a Tri-City Americans Hockey game. Tickets are just $10 but you have to buy them early (so I can get a group rate).

January 18th (Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day) is the SLEDDING TRIP! You've got to sign up by Friday the 15th ($20, includes transportation).

January 20th is going to be amazing. Stay tuned.

January 27th is (hopefully) the first Girls/Guys night of the year! I've been planning this one for months (seriously). Clear your social calendar now because you will NOT want to miss this one.

Pumpkin carving contest, games galore and of course, lots of candy.

EVERYONE WHO COMES DRESSED AS A MARTYR (someone who died for his/her faith) WILL GET A PRIZE!

Some ideas:

St. John the Baptist was beheaded,
St. Lawrence was burned on a grill
St. Joan of Arc was burned at the stake
Sts. Felicity and Perpetua were fed to wild beasts
St. Ignatius of Antioch was fed to the lions
St. Sebastian was shot with arrows
St. Bartholomew was flayed (skinned)
St. Peter was crucified upside down...

there are thousands more! Just do a little research and come up with an amazing costume.

This one's gonna be great!! Bring all your friends (seriously, the more the merrier).

BREAKING NEWS

Sorry for the last-minute update, but it's breaking news...

NO YOUTH GROUP TONIGHT because all of the adult leaders have dropped like flies. We all have the flu.

(As of last night there were still two of us who hadn't succumbed to the virus and we were going to carry on, but this morning we fell too).

We WILL play dodgeball next week, though, and we'll be painting the youth room. So be sure to be there!

In the meantime, pray we all recover, please. :)

Yakima Diocese Youth Convention!

We're off!! (This Sunday, October 11th, there's no Religious Ed for anybody)

All 1st Year Confirmation students will be coming to the Yakima Diocese Youth Convention which is gonna ROCK (I know, 'cause I helped plan it). Anyone else who wants to come is welcome, too (it's open to everybody).

For those who are going: Please meet in the parking lot in front of the church at 3:00pm this Friday, October 9th. PARENTS: please check in to make sure your paperwork is complete.

Bring a sack lunch for Friday's dinner (or $$ for fast food). We'll be returning Sunday afternoon around 4 or 5pm.

I CAN'T WAIT!!!
