Upcoming Events:

Sat., Nov. 26th, 2011 - Service Day at Mother Revelacion's Convent in DC. We will attend 8am Mass here at St. John's and then drive up to DC to spend the day with Mother Revelacion working on her convent - painting, fall gardening and doing odd jobs. We'll finish the day with dinner with her and some of her sisters before returning to St. John's in the early evening. Contact Rich Olon if you'd like to join us.

Fri., Dec. 2, 2011 - Ice skating at the Capitol Clubhouse in Waldorf. An evening for the family. More details to come.

Fri/Sat, Dec. 30/31st - Middle School Lock-In. The theme for this Lock-In is Mary. Put this event on your calendar and start stocking up on your sleep now.

Sat., Jan. 7, 2012 - Snow Tubing at Liberty Mountain in Carroll Valley, PA. We'll be taking 2 buses and joining with St. Aloysius and Holy Angels for an afternoon of snow tubing. We'll register everyone between 7:30 and 7:45am. Attend Mass together and then depart for Liberty Mountain. The event will cost $55 and is open to all Jr. and Sr. Youth Group members. Seating is limited. RSVP to Rich Olon if you'd like to attend.

Mon, Jan. 23rd, 2012 - Youth Rally and Mass for Life. Put this amazing event on your calendar and plan on joining us for the day. Seating is limited and is open to all Jr. and Sr. Youth Group members. RSVP to Rich Olon if you'd like to attend.

Jr. Youth Group Lock-In (with IHM's Middle School Youth Group)

Jr. Youth Group will be holding a Lock-in Friday, October 14th, from 7pm until Saturday morning, October 15th, at 8:30am. All 6th - 8th graders are welcome. Immaculate Heart of Mary's Youth Group will be joining us for this lock-in.

The cost is $20 plus a snack for the group - think brownies, cookies, fruit, raw vegetables, etc. (Scholarships are available).
Bring a sleeping bag and pillow, toiletries and, if you'd like, extra clothing.

Our rough itinerary is:
7pm - sign-in
7:15-7:45 - Skit/Icebreaker on Martrydom
7:45-10:00 - games
10:00 - small group discussion on Martyrdom
11:00 - bonfire
11:30 - pizza
12-1am - Holy Hour
1:15-3:15 - Movie
3:30-6:30 - boys off to the St. Jude Room and the girls to the Comfy Couch and Deacon rooms for rest/sleep
6:45-7:15 - breakfast
7:15-7:50 - clean-up
8-8:30 - Mass. Families are encouraged to join us for Mass.

Jr. Youth Group Lock-In

Jr. Youth Group will be holding a Lock-in Friday, April 29th, from 7pm until Saturday morning, April 3oth, at 8:30am. All 6th - 8th graders are welcome. The cost is $20 and a snack for the group - think brownies, cookies, fruit, raw vegetables, etc. Bring a sleeping bag and pillow, an old pair of shorts/pants and tee-shirt, and, if you'd like, toiletries or extra clothing.

Our rough itinerary is:

7pm - sign-in
7-7:30 - Surprise game
7:30 - break out discussion groups and some free time
8:00-9:00 - basketball tournament or Wi dance-off
9:00 - Living Rosary outside
9:30 - Surprise game
10:30 - bonfire & capture the flag
11:30 - pizza
12-1am - Holy Hour
1:15-3:15 - Movie
3:30-6:30 - boys off to the St. Jude Room and the girls to the Comfy Couch and Deacon rooms for rest/sleep
6:45-7:15 - breakfast
7:15-7:50 - clean-up
8-8:30 - Mass

Southern Maryland Youth Day - Saturday, March 19th

SMYD will be held on Saturday, March 19th at Immaculate Heart of Mary in Lexington Park, MD from 9am until 8pm. The day is open to all students currently in grades 8-12 and the cost is $25 for the day, which includes a tee-shirt if you register by February 28th.

Join hundreds of other teens for a day of games, a concert, professional speakers, lots of food, and lots of fun. Fr. Leo Patalinghug, nationally acclaimed youth speaker, will be speaking throughout the day. More information about Fr. Leo can be found at www.gracebeforemeals.com/frleo_bio.php

Jr. Youth Group Lock-in

Jr. Youth Group will be holding a Lock-in Friday, February 4th, from 7pm until Saturday morning, February 5th, at 8:30am. All 6th - 8th graders are welcome. The cost is $10 and a snack for the group - think brownies, cookies, fruit, raw vegetables, etc.

All you need to bring is a sleeping bag and pillow and, if you'd like, toiletries or extra clothing.

Our rough itinerary is:

7pm - sign-in
7-10:30 - basketball tournament, Twister competition, 2 separate break-out discussions, dodgeball, a craft service project, and some other activities.
10:30 - bonfire
11:30 - pizza
12-1am - Holy Hour
1:15-3:15 - Movie
3:30-6:30 - boys off to the St. Jude Room and the girls to the Comfy Couch and Deacon rooms for rest/sleep
6:45-7:15 - breakfast
7:15-7:50 - clean-up and set up the MHC for Cardinal Wuerl's visit
8-8:30 - Mass

Families are welcomed to join us for Mass.

***SNOW TUBING TIME CHANGE***
Due to a change in our snow tubing time slot, we are now leaving St. John's at 8am (not 7am) and returning around 5pm. Please be at St. John's between 7:30-7:45am Saturday morning. We will arrive at Liberty Mountain around 11am, eat lunch, snow tube from noon until 2pm and then board the bus and return home.

Jr. Youth Group Lock-In
The Jr. Youth Group will be holding a Lock-In at the MHC on Friday night, February 4th. The event will run from Friday night until Saturday morning. More details coming soon.

Snow Tubing at Liberty Mountain Resort
We are joining St. Aloysius and Holy Angels for a snow tubing trip to Liberty Mountain Resort in Carroll Valley, PA on Saturday, January 8th. We have chartered a tour bus for the day and will be leaving St. John's parking lot at 8am sharp (plan on arriving at St. John's between 7:30-7:45am) and will be returning around 5:00pm.

The total cost for the day is $50 per person and covers transportation, lunch at Liberty Mountain Lodge and 2 hours of snow tubing. Tickets are limited (55 total) and will be distributed on a first-come, first-serve basis. If you would like to attend, contact Rich Olon at 301-373-2281 x226 (work) or sjyg@verizon.net by no later than midday Friday. A St. John's permission form and Liberty Mountain release form must be completed and submitted upon boarding the bus. There is a restroom on the bus.

Pizza Party with Fr. Ray
Congratulations go out to the Jr. Youth Group for winning the Christmas raffle sales contest, and the prize of a pizza party at Fr. Ray's house. The Jr. YG raised just over $1,000, while the Sr. YG raised nearly $600. After paying for the raffle prizes, we have approx. $1,300 to spend on Christmas presents for families in need. Because of your time and efforts and the generous support of our parish, there will be a few local families, including a number of children, waking Christmas morning to a merrier Christmas and evidence of Christ's Spirit of giving. The Jr. YG is meeting Saturday, December 18th, from 6-8pm at the MHC. At 7pm we will walk over to Fr. Ray's house for the pizza party and parents can pick the youth up at 8pm there (please walk into the house and say hello when you arrive to pick up the youth).

High School Christmas Dance
St. John's Sr. Youth Group will be hosting a High School Christmas Dance on Friday, December 17th from 7-10pm. Music and refreshments will be provided. All area high school students are invited. The price is $7 single/$10 couple in advance (rsvp by emailing sjyg@verizon.net and pay at the door) or $10 single/$15 couple at the door without an rsvp.

Christmas Raffle
Week 1 - Sarahann Cohey won the Nativity Statue of the Holy Family and the Jr. Youth Group is leading the Sr. Youth Group in sales. The group that raises the most money wins a pizza party with Fr. Ray and the Youth Group leaders.
Week 2 - Raffle tickets will be sold after all Masses. This week's prize is a beautiful leather-bound NAB Catholic Answer Bible with a pray-along Rosary embossed into the back cover.

Snow Tubing
We are planning our annual snow-tubing trip at Ski Liberty for Saturday, January 8th. Details will be coming soon.

Youth Rally and Mass for Life
January 24th (Monday) St. John's will be taking a charter bus up to the Youth Rally and Mass for Life at the Verizon Center in DC. We have 55 tickets to the event and want to fill the bus with our youth. Join 20,000 students from around the country at an amazing Rally and Mass. Catholic musicians open the event followed by confessions, a rosary prayed by all and Mass to be celebrated by Cardinal Wuerl and priests from around the world. We will stop for lunch and make another stop (still in the planning stages) on the way back to St. John's. Call or email Rich Olon (301-373-2281/sjyg@verizon.net) to reserve your ticket.
