EXCURSION TRAIN FOR ST. MARYS IN THE PLANNING STAGES

ST. MARYS, GA—On Tuesday, executives from Boatright Industries, owner and operator of St. Marys Railroad, St. Marys Little Theatre, Theatre by the Trax, and St. Marys city officials met to discuss the creation of an excursion train to run out of St. Marys.

"Boatright Companies is known for its community involvement in the many markets they serve," said Barbara Ryan, Chair of St. Marys Little Theatre. "Shane Boatright (founder and CEO of Boatright Companies) has been a generous supporter of the St. Marys Little Theatre, and now his team has come up with a great idea to help foster economic development in St. Marys while adding to the assets of our community."

Preliminary plans are for the excursion train to run from Theatre by the Trax to just beyond the Borrell Creek Bridge and disembark passengers for an entertaining experience at the Boatright Companies-owned land there. Train experiences already in discussions include a Pumpkin Patch Ride, Polar Express, Wild West, and Peter Cottontail Express. Ultimately the planning group would like to produce "A Day Out with Thomas the Tank," an event that has drawn hundreds of thousands of people in other markets.

"The extent of a train ride experience is only limited by our imagination," said Ryan who will help develop the excursion experiences.
Boatright's consultant, Jim Garnett, President of the Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum in Calera, Alabama, said it is important that the train ride go to a place that is not accessible by car. Doug Vaught, owner of Theatre by the Trax, agreed.

"Only six percent of the entire population have ever ridden a train," Vaught said. "The St. Marys Railroad excursion adventure will give everyone a chance to know what it's like to ride the rails, and at the end of the ride, there will always be a fun happening to enhance the whole experience."

The tentative arrangement is for St. Marys Railroad to provide the locomotive, driver, and passenger cars, and St. Marys Little Theatre will provide creative development and people for entertainment and event supervision.

According to Boatright, his staff will immediately go into the building and/or acquisition of open flat cars with metal seats and a cover that will hold about 50 passengers each. Two or three such rail cars will be readied before the first excursion which may be the Pumpkin Patch (in October), or even sooner if rail cars are readied before that time.

"Mr. Boatright is very community minded, and starting an excursion train in St. Marys is a win-win opportunity for the railroad and the community," said Paul Pleasant, General Manager of St. Marys Railroad.

The Heart of Dixie Railroad Museum has had great financial success with its excursion train adventures, according to Garnett. With a Birmingham metro area population similar to Jacksonville's, St. Marys Railroad Excursion train planners project a similar success given that there is no other train experience within the "area of dominant influence" that defines the regional market.

"Adding this exciting attraction to our list of already impressive tourist draws for our region including Cumberland Island and Okefenokee Swamp will make St. Marys more competitive for the lucrative tourism dollars," Ryan concluded.

CUMBERLAND ISLAND NATIONAL SEASHORE ANNOUNCES ANNUAL HUNT REGISTRATION

St. Marys, Georgia – On July 1, 2013, Cumberland Island National Seashore will begin accepting on-line registrations for the 2013-2014 Managed Hunts. The registration system will open at 8:00 a.m. on July 1, 2013, and continue until quotas have been reached for each hunt. The number of hunts one can register for is not limited.

The registration process is first come first serve through the website, www.pay.gov. The hunt fee is $35.00 per hunt per hunter except for the adult/child hunt where the fee is $35.00 per adult/child pair. Payment is required at the time of registration. The fee is non-refundable and non-transferable. Hunters can register as individuals or as a group. A group consists of 5 members plus the group lead. Standby hunters are no longer being accepted. An e-mail will confirm your registration.

To register, go to www.pay.gov and type "Cumberland" in the search box located on the left hand side of the screen under the section entitled "Find Public Forms". From the search results, select "Cumberland Island Managed Hunt" and follow the screen instructions to complete registration. Cumberland Island National Seashore assimilates Georgia Department of Natural Resources hunting regulations.

Transportation to Cumberland Island is by passenger ferry or private boat. The passenger ferry departs from the National Park Service dock in St. Marys, Georgia at 10:00 a.m. on the hunt check-in day, typically Sunday. The return ferry departs from the Plum Orchard dock at 10:30 a.m. on close-out day, typically Thursday. The round trip fare is $30.00. Reservations for the ferry must be made when you receive your hunt confirmation. The reservation number is 877-860-6787 or 912-882-4335. Small boat charters are no longer available. No other charter or water taxi operators are authorized to operate to the Seashore.

Check-in for each hunt is mandatory and will be held at the Plum Orchard Hunt Camp and begins on the first day of each hunt, typically Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. All hunters are required to present their hunting license, picture identification and hunt confirmation during this check in. Camping during the six designated hunting periods and in the designated hunting camping areas is for registered hunters only and non-hunters are prohibited from camping during these time periods.

Hunters may set up camp no earlier than 8:00 a.m. the day of hunt check-in. All hunters must depart by 12:00 p.m. the day of check-out. Camping during the hunt is restricted to registered hunters and all participants are required to camp at Plum Orchard Hunt Camp or Brickhill Campground. Plum Orchard Hunt Camp allows open fires in fire rings and also has bathrooms and showers. Brickhill Campground is located in designated Wilderness and has no amenities. There are no bathrooms, open fires are prohibited; propane stoves required. All trash, including toilet paper must be removed by the person-no trash receptacles available.

Private boaters must check-in at Plum Orchard Hunt Camp. Private boats must be beached or stream anchored. Private boats may use Plum Orchard dock to load/unload gear but are not allowed to dock overnight.

Hunting at Cumberland Island National Seashore is authorized by federal law and occurs in designated Wilderness areas only. A Georgia Big Game License is required for hunting deer and hog in addition to a regular Georgia Hunting License or a Primitive Weapons License (if using primitive weapons). Cumberland Island National Seashore follows Georgia Department of Natural Resources hunting regulations. Hunting on Cumberland Island is managed to benefit the island’s wildlife resources and to provide a quality experience for park visitors. In order to continue effective management of the resources you may be invited to complete a brief 10 minute questionnaire about your hunting experience. COASTAL GEORGIA FILM ALLIANCE CALLS FOR EXTRAS

Film Day: June 23 at 10 a.m. at the old paper mill site in St. Marys, Georgia

ST. MARYS, GA—If you’ve ever wanted to be in the movies, perhaps this is your chance.

The Coastal Georgia Film Alliance (CGFA) has put out a call for extras for the filming of “Preserve,” an apocalyptic story that takes place 170 years after a disaster has driven humanity underground. Survivors finally emerge to the surface and seek safe harbor in an unwelcoming world.

The Film Alliance is seeking adults between the ages of 18 and 55 who are physically fit as they will be playing roles that require running. According to CGFA talent coordinator and vice chair, Barbara Ryan, the scene calls for between 60-75 extras, all on a volunteer basis.

“Participants will be asked to wear their grungiest ‘survival clothes,’” Ryan said. “And on-site makeup artists will do the rest to bring the illusion to life.”

Ryan said the signup for extras will be on a first-respond, first-enrolled basis.

“This is the first movie we’ve coordinated where we’re encompassing the talents of our newly enrolled Alliance partners of Liberty, McIntosh, and Charlton Counties,” Ryan said. “Glynn County and northeast Florida residents are welcome as well, so we’re expecting a big response.”

“Preserve” was written by Wayne Degan and is being directed by Brandon Herron, both residents of Coastal Georgia.

Doug Vaught, CGFA chair, has been assisting the filming of “Preserve” for approximately six weeks, and has been impressed.

“Much of the film is being made in St. Marys on the old paper mill site—in fact, the site actually inspired the writing of the film,” Vaught said. “And scenes are being filmed in surrounding counties as well.”

Vaught went on to say that the Film Alliance and the movie producers are very grateful to the trustees of the paper mill property for allowing the film to be made without any compensation to the property.

“This is the kind of community spirit that will come back to us tenfold as we continue to pursue projects that ultimately can make a difference in economic development for our region,” said Vaught.

BRAG is headed our way!

The St. Marys Convention & Visitors Bureau is pleased to share that the wildly popular 34^th Annual BRAG Ride will end its seven day bicycle in St. Marys on Saturday, June 8 bringing 800-1,100 people to town. The annual ride changes routes each year and, this year, began in Cordele on June 2 and will travel through and spend time in Tifton, Douglas, Waycross and Brunswick on its way to St. Marys. The End-of-the-Ride event will happen in the Howard Gilman Memorial Park and will include the rider’s end-of road meal, photo displays of the previous day’s rides, musical entertainment will be provided from 11am-1pm by the Unites States Navy rock band, “Pride” and a BRAG shower station will be set up for riders. Riders are expected to begin biking into downtown between 10am and 11am and continue arriving through 2pm.

Special Olympics Georgia hosts the rest stops during the BRAG ride. The three Camden County rest stop locations are the Satilla River Waterfront Park, Kingsland’s Maple Ford Park and the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Franklin Gate parking lot near the Bancroft Sail Display. Boy Scout Troop 318 is assisting SOGA but additional volunteers are welcome at the Kings Bay rest stop between 9am-1pm. Riders can enjoy drinks, sandwiches and an opportunity to interact with local residents.

All roads along the route are open to normal traffic, so we ask that drivers keep alert and use caution when sharing the road with the cyclists. We also ask locals to note that boat trailer parking at the Osborne Street boat ramp will be limited until after 3pm. The Meeting Street boat ramp may be a better option for the day. Many of the riders will be staying in town after the event and we encourage our residents to interact with and welcome the group with the southern charm our visitors have come to know us for.

The over 350 mile ride is not a race but a family-oriented adventure through some of the most scenic communities in Georgia. Riders say the ride is recreational, social and, in many ways educational. While this sojourn can be strenuous with the warm Georgia days and miles of pedaling each day it has been completed by all types of people including children, college students, military members, business professionals of all kinds and retired people from all walks of life.

SCHOLARSHIPS AWARDED FOR THEATRE CAMP

ST. MARY, GA—St. Marys Little Theatre, Lisa Allen Dance Works, and The Friese Studio of Music announced the awarding of three scholarships to this year's Summer Musical Theatre Camp scheduled for June 10-14 and June 17-21. Scholarship recipients included Jillian Draper, Piper Ramsey, and Kaelyn Sosebee.
Registrations to the Theatre Camp are still available through May 20, and can be made at Lisa Allen Dance Works or at The Friese Studio of Music. Camp attendees should be ages 5 to 16.

This year's two-week musical theatre camp is themed "Love Disney," and will incorporate music, dance, and drama with favorite Disney characters played by camp attendees. According to Lisa Allen, owner of Lisa Allen Danceworks, every attendee will be a part of the grand showcase at the end of the two-week camp.

"The 'Love Disney' experience will enhance self expression and help build self confidence while the children learn to sing, dance and act," Allen said. "Even seasoned performers will find the camp refreshing and an opportunity to polish their skills and build their resume."

Allen went on to say that all levels of experience are welcome, even kids who have never performed in front of an audience before.

Megan Friese, owner of The Friese Studio of Music, said, "Last year's theatre camp was so successful, we decided it must be a yearly event. Parents and the public were impressed by how much we accomplished in the two week period, and many of our attendees went on to participate in subsequent performances in and out of our area."

Barbara Ryan, Director of St. Marys Little Theatre (SMLT), said that the 2013 Musical Theatre Camp is an official program of SMLT's outreach to encourage the youth of Camden County to get involved in performing arts.

"Research shows that young people who participate in community theatre have the opportunity to develop skills such as improved communication, critical thinking, and social skills—all key components of any self-development program," Ryan said. "This year's camp will empower children to express themselves physically, emotionally, and intellectually. And the most important thing is that the kids will be having fun, which is what summertime is all about."

Anyone can participate in the "Treasures by the Trax" events in three different ways: Reserve a free vendor space (donation of 20% of proceeds is requested); drop items at Theatre by the Trax ahead of time (to donate all proceeds), or just come and shop til you drop!

St. Marys Little Theatre vice chair L. J. Williams said, "This is a great opportunity for the public to contribute to the cultural landscape of our community while at the same time giving their home a good sprucing up."

According to Doug Vaught, chair of Coastal Georgia Film Alliance, the Alliance plans to use their portion of the funds to promote Coastal Georgia to the international film and television community. St. Marys Little Theatre will fund upcoming productions and children's programs with their portion of the proceeds.

"Often people forget the monetary requirements to keep performing arts alive," St. Marys Little Theatre chair Barbara Ryan said. "Besides costumes, lighting, staging, and props, there is also a need for promotional and educational materials to assure that the public is kept informed about events."

COASTAL GEORGIA FILM ALLIANCE SECURES TWO MORE FILM PROJECTS FOR CAMDEN

Film producer Kim Murray had such a great experience filming in Camden County in January of this year, she contacted the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance (CGFA) to see about filming a short here in the near future. Murray is the producer of "The Prisoner," the locally shot film directed by international award-winning director Mahmoud Shoulizadeh whose film, "Noora," took first place in the 49th International Film Festival of Taormina in Italy. Murray's new project is called "Mime in a Box," and is set to film in Camden County in late Spring. On Sunday, Coastal Georgia Film Alliance co-founders, Doug Vaught and Barbara Ryan, scouted locations with the creators of "Mime in a Box." According to the film's writer, Samad Banks, the short is very "Twilight Zonish" in its plot and presentation, and will involve local extras as talent.

Sunday was a busy day in Camden for film projects. On the same day, Vaught and Ryan facilitated the filming of "Preserve," an apocalyptic short that was written specifically for its film location—the old paper mill site in St. Marys.

Brandon Herron brought his film crew into Camden for shooting after his positive experience filming "The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands," based on a Stephen King short story.

Herron said, "The Coastal Georgia Film Alliance people are the ones that made this happen. We've had such an outpouring of support from the Alliance who provided all the extras we needed and organized everything to assure everyone's safety on the set."

Wayne Degan, who wrote "Preserve," has collaborated with Herron on other film projects and wrote "Preserve" after touring the paper mill site during a recent film production.

Degan said, "One of my mentors, Robert Rodriquez of Sin City fame, once said, 'if you don't have the big money, shoot around what you have.' The property in St. Marys definitely drove the concept of this film."

"Preserve" takes place 170 years after a major disaster that drove survivors underground. Humans are re-emerging topside as the film focuses on four people seeking safety in a rough world.

"These survivors are a lot like the pioneers in the early days of America," Degan said. "Fighting the need to be complacent, they leave a comfortable place to explore life and improve their lot."

"Georgia's 'up to 30% tax credits' for filmmakers is a compelling reason for filmmakers to come to the area," said Vaught, who also serves as chair of CGFA. "But with so many locales to choose from, and the potential of economic impact to a community so desirable, bringing film projects to an area can be very competitive."

Vaught said that the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance works closely with the State of Georgia to fulfill location requests and to make sure that filmmakers have a positive experience.

"When filmmakers visit the Film Alliance website (www.coastalgeorgiafilm.org), they hear what previous producers say about filming in Camden County, and that goes a long way to selling them on our area," Vaught continued. "We're in the business of 'repeat business' so we want to make sure everything in the filming process is handled professionally."

Since its formation in 2010, the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance has facilitated the production of two television pilots, two full length film features, two television series, four film shorts, one video production, and another short has been secured for the near future.

CGFA's first project, "Eye of the Hurricane," in which hundreds of locals were employed as extras, has been distributed in Canada and South America and is currently under negotiation for release in the United States through The Hallmark Channel.

Vaught said, "Every film project, no matter how small, in some way contributes to the local economy. Local services such as hotels, car rentals, carpenters, electricians, retail stores, restaurants, and more benefit. Okefenokee NWR Cane Pole Trail Boardwalk Repaired

When the 2011-2012 Honey Prairie Fire roared through the Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge, it was repeating a centuries-old pattern of regeneration of the swamp and its longleaf pine uplands. But many of the human-built structures that helped people enjoy these habitats were consumed in the flames. One of these was the Cane Pole Trail Boardwalk, which succumbed in June 2011. The wooden boardwalk and its covered 20x30 foot platform have now been rebuilt and are open to the public. The boardwalk leaves the quarter-mile long Cane Pole Trail along the Suwannee Canal and extends north for 100 feet into Mizell Prairie for a sample of the wetland prairie that dominates the eastern portion of the Refuge.

The Refuge is also beginning construction of the three-quarter mile Chesser Island Boardwalk, which was also destroyed in the fire. Anticipated completion date is early August. The Suwannee Canal Recreation Area boat basin and piers are also being rebuilt, with completion expected in April.

The second Flashlight Easter Hunt which is a Family Hunt will begin at 8:30 PM. Prizes will include: candy and toys. Grand Prizes will be one round of mini-golf! Team Camden Hosts Newly Elected State Board of Transportation Representative

St. Marys, Georgia (March 2013) - The Economic Development Organizations of Camden County, hosted the Honorable Ann Purcell for a two day tour of Camden County on March 4^th and 5^th. Former Legislator Ann Purcell was recently elected to the State Board of Transportation of Georgia representing the 17 county 1st Congressional District. Her visit included a number of Georgia Department of Transportation staff members and was comprised of a tour of areas in Woodbine, Kingsland and St. Marys and a “Meet and Greet” presentation prior to her departure.

Team Camden felt it was important, as our new district representative, that Purcell view Camden County early in her term and be apprised personally of the concerns, questions, successes and failures regarding current and future plans for the area and that she have the opportunity to meet and talk to Camden’s community leaders, administrators and elected officials.

The all-cities tour included community highlights, project updates and reviews, and traffic safety concerns. The visit included a “Meet and Greet” session held in Kingsland, where after an energetic introduction by Artie Jones III, Director of the City of St. Marys Economic Development Office, Purcell shared how she was impressed with the unity she observed while in Camden County. Mrs. Purcell was eager to let Camden County know that she is available to us and willing to assist whenever possible. She showed great understanding and concern for our position on Interstate 95 and discussed how important it is for all of us on the I-95 corridor to do whatever we can to use this asset and get travelers off of the highway and into our communities. Other topics discussed during the visit were gateway grants for beautification of interchanges, community partnerships in high-traffic areas with heavy litter, improvement and expansion ideas for evacuation routes, and tree-clearing around interchanges for better business visibility.

Georgia DOT is governed by a 14-member State Transportation Board which exercises general control and supervision of the Department. The Board is entrusted with powers which include, but are not limited to: naming the Commissioner; designating which public roads are encompassed within the state highway system; approving long-range transportation plans; overseeing the administration of construction contracts; and authorizing lease agreements. Board Members are elected by a majority of a General Assembly caucus from each of Georgia’s fourteen congressional districts. Each board member serves a five-year term.

Team Camden is made up of members representing each of the Camden County Economic Development Organizations including the Camden County Chamber of Commerce, The Camden County Joint Development Authority, The Camden Partnership, Kingsland Development Authority, Kingsland Downtown Development Authority, Kingsland Convention & Visitors Bureau, St. Marys Downtown Development Authority, St. Marys Industrial Development Authority, St. Marys Convention & Visitors Bureau, and the Woodbine Downtown Development Authority. The group works toward developing a well-coordinated team approach and presenting a unified approach for economic development to best position Camden County to reach its economic potential.

MEET AT ST. MARYS WATERFRONT PARK

The St. Marys EarthKeepers will be picking up litter in Downtown St. Marys as part of the 2013 St. Marys River Celebration. The annual spring cleaning of the river and tributaries will be held Saturday, March 16, throughout four counties bordering the St. Marys River in Georgia and Florida. This one-day volunteer event gives area citizens an opportunity to play an important role in good Earth stewardship. All participants interested in helping on the EarthKeepers team should meet at the Howard Gilman Memorial Park on St. Marys' Waterfront at 8:00 a.m. for supplies and an assigned area of cleanup. After the cleanup, around noon, volunteers will be treated to a celebration event at Traders Hill in Folkston. To register with the EarthKeepers, email barbara@stormersmarketing.com or simply show up at the scheduled time.

Last year's River Cleanup and Celebration brought out over 800 participants, and volunteers retrieved approximately 54,000 pounds of trash along the river and its tributaries. The luncheon that followed at Traders Hill drew a big crowd, and it is anticipated that this year's event will be an even greater success.
Alex Kearns, Chair of St. Marys EarthKeepers, said that the river cleanup is vital to the protection of many of our marine animals.

"Trash along our downtown streets often ends up in our waterways," Kearns said "and it is (conservatively) estimated that discarded plastics cause 50,000-90,000 deaths of marine animals each year. By working together to prevent litter from damaging the health of our river, we can make a profound difference – locally and globally."

Crooked River State Park wins award for best operations

ST. MARYS, GA, March 4, 2013 -- Crooked River State Park near St. Marys was awarded the Most Outstanding Park Operation Award by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Awards were presented during a recent conference co-hosted by the park system and Friends of Georgia State Parks & Historic Sites.

According to region manager Tommy Turk, "Crooked River is a park that does all things well." Facilities and grounds are well maintained, and park staff complete many projects that would normally be done by outside contractors, saving state funds. Equipment shared by many parks within southern Georgia is kept in good condition by Crooked River staff. Rangers assist in regional law enforcement training and search and rescue operations. The park is also known for its nature center and outstanding programming, such as guided kayak trips and birding classes.

Located on southern tip of Georgia's "Colonial Coast," Crooked River State Park is the perfect spot for enjoying the intracoastal waterway and maritime forest. Campsites are surrounded by palmettos and Spanish moss, while cottages are set near the tidal river. A boat ramp is popular with anglers and paddlers. Just down the road is the ferry to famous Cumberland Island National Seashore known for secluded beaches and wild horses. Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge Announces Summer Hours

Okefenokee National Wildlife Refuge will begin its summer hours of operation Friday, March 1, 2013. The East Entrance, located seven miles southwest of Folkston, GA, will open one-half hour before sunrise and close at 7:30 p.m.

Summer hours are in effect March 1 to October 31, 2013. With longer hours, visitors can enjoy the day-use canoe trails until 6:00 p.m. The gate to the Swamp Island Drive now stays open until 6:00 p.m., and visitors are expected to exit the drive by 7:00 p.m.

With more than five inches of rain the past week, water levels are improving, and gators are out basking. The resident Florida sandhill cranes may be seen engaging in their fascinating courtship dances, the red-shouldered hawks are tidying their Canal nest, and there are turtles galore – all of which can be seen on a tour down the Suwannee Canal into the wetland prairies.

Ranger-led interpretive programs on gators, birds, and habitats are offered every Saturday. For more information contact the refuge’s visitor center from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily at (912) 496-7836.

To book overnight trips into the swamp call the canoe hotline (912) 496-3331. The line is staffed only from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Monday through Friday, except federal holidays.

Refuge partner Okefenokee Adventures (912-496-7156) offers guided boat rides into the swamp, canoe and kayak rentals, and sunset and overnight canoe tours, including one scheduled for March 11-13. With the longer hours, visitors can enjoy the refuge and its offerings that much more.

Stephen King story filmed in St. Marys

STEPHEN KING SHORT STORY COMES ALIVE IN FILM PRODUCED IN CAMDEN COUNTY

ST. MARYS, GA—Coastal Georgia Film Alliance announced the recent filming of "The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands," in St. Marys, Georgia. The film is based upon a Stephen King short story that is part of King's Dollar Baby Films program. Filmmaker Brandon Herron also filmed parts of the story in Darien and Brunswick.

"The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands" is from "Skeleton Crew," King's second collection of short fiction. When Herron discovered that King was inclined to sometimes give aspiring filmmakers rights to his short stories, he pursued the process and ended up with one year's non-commercial film rights to the story. Herron had previously produced a documentary, but never a narrative and wanted more than anything to have a film that could be seen at a film festival.

According to Herron, the story is told mostly through flashbacks to the early twentieth century. The "teller" relates his meeting of a man with a curse and the strange events that took place over a friendly poker game. The flashback sequences will be black and white while the modern scenes will be in color.

"I've been watching a lot of older black and white films," said Herron. "My biggest influence for the look of the film is Stanley Kubrick's 'Killer's Kiss.' It has a great shadowy, moody feel to it."

Herron said the Coastal Georgia Film Alliance made filming in St. Marys easy. "They provided me with a location that worked out great," he said. Herron also said that finding actors was never a challenge.

"I know a lot of Stephen King fans," Herron said. "Some of my actors even doubled as crew members."

Herron's goal for the film is to get it into film festivals. He plans to continue to make films, his life's passion. "I've fallen in love with filmmaking and I think a few of the cast members have as well," he said.

Coastal Georgia Film Alliance chair, Doug Vaught, said that projects like Herron's can bring a lot of notice to St. Marys and the surrounding area when it comes to the filmmaking community.

"The Film Alliance plans to include 'The Man Who Would Not Shake Hands' in an upcoming micro film fest to be held at Theatre by the Trax," Vaught said. "We are fortunate to be able to showcase local artists creating films like Herron's that are inspired by legends like Stephen King."

Olde Towne Gallery - Featured Artist

St. Marys gallery February guest artist

Sherry Rowell describes her work as “wearable, functional, and whimsical art”, and she is displaying some of her gourd art at Olde Towne Gallery through the month of February. The artist began a few years ago with more traditional styles in gourd art but soon developed a more creative flair. Last year Rowell expanded the variety of gourd styles adding very contemporary designs. She continuously finds new uses for gourds and has become increasingly creative with designs and colors on this seemingly traditional craft material. See her work at the gallery located at 304 Osborne St. in downtown St. Marys next to Cedar Oak Cafe and open 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily.

Cumberland Island to Perform Prescribed Burn on Debris Pile

Cumberland Island National Seashore announced today they are moving ahead with a fire management maintenance project on the island, which will occur within the next 30 days. This burn project will be conducted on the south end of the island known locally as Raccoon Keys on the debris pile. The pile covers a relatively small area of the Keys, approximately 100 feet by 20 feet and consists of dried vegetation from island landscape and right-of-way maintenance.

A carefully developed burn prescription has been approved for this project both locally and regionally. The National Park Service must meet a defined set of conditions before starting the prescribed burn including obtaining all burning permits from the Georgia Forestry Commission. Fire managers will also look for acceptable burning conditions including good smoke dispersal and favorable winds which will carry the smoke out to sea as to not impact the Intracoastal Waterway, or the neighboring communities of St. Marys, Kings Bay Submarine Base, and Fernandina Beach, Florida. “Overall safety and smoke management are our primary concerns for this operation” said Cumberland Island National Seashore Superintendent Fred Boyles.

Fire managers anticipate visible smoke for several days after the initial start of the pile burn. The burn will be conducted and monitored by trained, experienced National Park Service firefighters. Access to the area will be restricted while the fire is active. For more information during the burning period, please visit www.inciweb.org for periodic updates.

Cumberland Island National Seashore is the largest and southernmost barrier island in Georgia. The park is the home to approximately 36,000 acres of pristine maritime forest, undeveloped beaches, freshwater lakes, wide brackish marshes and over 9,800 acres of Congressionally designated Wilderness.
