DESTINATION WEDDING INVITATION ENCLOSURES

Now that you have found the perfect INVITATION SUITE, you may be wondering what else you should include with your invitation. Below are a list of common destination wedding invitation enclosures. If you want to avoid enclosures all together, you can include all this information on your WEDDING WEBSITE. A guest who is not technologically savvy can always get their information from you directly, however, I recommend that brides and grooms include something more than just an invitation and response card when planning a St. Thomas destination wedding.

RESPONSE CARDS

Enclosed within your destination wedding invitation should be a response card including a self-addressed, stamped envelope or instructions regarding the method of reply which might include your phone number, email, or wedding website. Just remember, that not every guest is wired. So if you choose an online RSVP, make sure to have another option for those guests.

If you choose not to include a response card, include a line on the lower left corner of the invitation that says “R.S.V.P.,” the date by which you need the response, and the method by which they can respond (mailing address, phone number, email address, or website). This helps to ensure that the bride and groom and/or wedding planner have an accurate count of the number of guests expected to attend. An additional benefit of response cards is that they can also include the guests’ meal preferences so just the right amount of food and drinks are ordered.

Smart tip: Since people sometimes forget to write their names on the reply card, number your guest list, and then lightly pencil the proper number on the back of each reply card before tucking it into the addressed invitation.

HOTEL AND TRAVEL INFORMATION

Locating a hotel (or two) that’s convenient and affordable for your out-of-town guests is a common courtesy; you can pass this along using an insert card. You needn’t include all the features; just give the basic room rate, plus contact information. If you have negotiated a deal with an airline for discounted travel for your group, include this information here as well. And don’t forget the airport code, for St. Thomas, it is “STT.”

RECEPTION CARD AND/OR RELATED WEDDING EVENTS

When the reception will not be held immediately following the ceremony or at a venue other than the ceremony site, a reception card is used. This allows you move extra information like the time or location onto another sheet and keeps the invitation clutter free.

In addition, many destination weddings include more than just the ceremony and reception. Consider including a schedule of optional events and their locations such as welcome drinks, a night on the town, and a morning after breakfast just to name a few. This information can go on the wedding website, but that is not a substitute for a direct invitation. If everyone is not invited to everything, use separate invites or enclosures. Bear in mind, if guests travel for your wedding, they should be invited to everything except the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner.

AN ATTIRE CARD

Guests sometimes wonder what to wear to a wedding; you can tip them the wink by adding a line to the lower right corner of the invitation indicating “black tie” or other information. You can skip the attire card all together by including this information on the schedule of events.

MAP ENCLOSURES

A map may or may not be a helpful addition to a destination wedding invitation suite as many guests may use a taxi service to get to your wedding events or you may plan on providing transportation. But a nice aerial map of the island is always a charming addition to a St. Thomas destination wedding suite.

Several online map services will help you make one. If you want a more organic, creative touch, add artistic touches by tracing over a printout of your map, see if your calligrapher can create a map for you, or search for a graphic artist on ETSY.COM.

YOUR WEBSITE INFORMATION

In the technological age, I don’t recommend mentioning the wedding website on your invitation. I think the invitation itself should be as clutter-free as possible, but a business card sized enclosure with the web address for your website is a great idea. Not only can you avoid including enclosures all together; you can also have more information available on your site than would ever fit into your destination wedding invitation suite.

AT HOME CARD

Since a change in marital status is often accompanied by a change of address, and sometimes a change of name, this small card is a way to let people know how to contact you — and how to address you — after the wedding. The title usually reads: “At Home,” and was followed by the date you would return from your honeymoon, or your wedding date itself: “After May 22, 2010.” Nowadays, you can include your cell phone, e-mail address, and website, if you wish to share them. I think this is a great addition to any wedding invitation suite as it adds a little tradition to even the most modern invitations.

THINGS TO OMIT FROM YOUR INVITATIONS

The slips of TISSUE PAPER that find their way into invitations originated when all invitations were properly engraved (the ink can smudge, and the TISSUE PAPER keeps things neat). People who chose other printing methods included the tissue paper to camouflage their choice. If your invitation isn’t engraved, leave these out.

Even if your store provides them, do not include little cards that contain information about your registry. And don’t add the registry information to your invitation itself in any other way. It’s impolite for you to start the conversation about gifts. Even if some guests find it convenient, others will think it seems greedy. Ask family and friend to spread the news when people ask; you can also put this information one level down on a wedding website, and mention it to anyone who asks you directly.

Putting together your invitations for a destination wedding is no different from putting together a traditional invitation. It starts with the guest list. You will need to create your guest list complete with full addresses and courtesy titles such as Mr. or Doctor (if you choose to use them). Consider calling parents or friends to acquire or confirm addresses and spellings. Don’t wait until the last minute to get started, this can take a surprising amount of time and destination wedding invitations should be sent at least three months before the event.

ADDRESSING WEDDING INVITATIONS FOR YOUR DESTINATION WEDDING

The Inner and Outer Envelope:

Wedding invitations are traditionally mailed inside two envelopes. This ensures that each guest will receive a pristine envelope, even if the outer envelope has been soiled in the mail. While this is not necessary, I think it is a great touch that adds that extra something special to even the most modern invitations. If your invitations do not come with two envelopes, you can order envelopes in white or a complimentary color from PAPER SOURCE.

Names and Titles:

For your destination wedding, you can use any naming convention you desire. I love the idea of keeping the outer envelopes formal and using first names only on the inner envelopes and using honorifics for family, such as “Aunt” and “Uncle.” However, should you choose to use traditional convention, here is what you need to know:

The outer envelope should include the full names and postal information for the head of household and spouse/domestic partner only (since this envelope is for the postal service). Nicknames are not used and middle names are written out or omitted (no initials). Only last names are traditionally used on the inner envelope (as there should be no confusion who Mr. and Mrs. Smith are at this point).

The inner envelope should include the names of all of the invited guests in the household including children or dates if they are invited (since the inner envelope specifies exactly who within the household is invited). Children over 16 years of age should receive their own invitation.

When inviting an unmarried couple who lives together, or an engaged couple, list each name on a separate line on both envelopes, alphabetically by last name. If you are inviting a single guest – who does not live with their date – include the guest’s name only on the outer envelope and include the line “and Guest” on the inner envelope. If you know whom he or she will be bringing, it’s more personal to include that person’s name, on a separate line on the inner envelope.

Examples:

All titles other than “Mr.,” “Mrs.,” “Ms.,” should be spelled out. For a single woman, either “Ms.” or “Miss” is appropriate; many people find the former preferable. A boy under the age of 13 is “Master,” not “Mr.” Girls and young women under age 18 are called “Miss.”

The Address

The address on a wedding invitation should be hand written. Printed labels (like the Avery brand one used by many offices) are not appropriate. However, it is acceptable to use decorative or fancy labels if they match your invitation style. I prefer to still hand write the address on the label. If your invitations are formal, you may want to consider having your envelopes inscribed by a professional calligrapher. Make sure you get your envelopes and guest list to your calligrapher at least two to three weeks before you need them.

Be sure spell out all words in the address such as “Post Office Box”, Street and even State names. House numbers smaller than 20 should be spelled out.

The Return Address

Write out all the words here too on the envelope’s back flap. This however can be printed on the envelope.

ASSEMBLING YOUR DESTINATION WEDDING INVITATIONS

All enclosures should be printed on coordinating papers. Enclosures should be stacked smallest to largest (with the invitation on the bottom). When using a folded invitation, insert the inclosures into the invitation. Insert everything into the inner envelope, print side up (facing the flap – so that when guests open the inner envelope, they see the text). Then slip the unsealed inner envelope into the outer envelope with the names facing the back flap.

MAILING YOUR DESTINATION WEDDING INVITATIONS

Bring your completed invitations to the post office (or bring a sample in advance to check the weight) so that you are sure to purchase the correct postage. If the post office does not have the design you want, you can order stamps from USPS.COM or even create your own postage at ZAZZLE.COM. If possible, I recommend that you can request that your invitations be hand-canceled – which will prevent the damage that machines can cause, and have a pretty stamp instead of printed bar code.

Adding a Special Touch:

The towns listed below will cancel your stamps for you, imprinting them with their sweet names. Enclose your stamped, addressed invitations in a large padded envelope or box, and include a note detailing your request. Address it to “Postmaster,” followed by the name of your chosen town, state, and zip code. Be sure to call ahead to let him or her know the invitations are on their way. Consider sending the envelopes Priority or Express Mail, so you can track the package. Allow enough time for invitations to be delivered, postmarked, and mailed out — ask the postmaster how long it will take.

Your save the date card should be sent to everyone you plan to invite to the wedding and should include your names, the date of the ceremony and the location. In the case of a destination wedding, you may still be trying to determine your venues, hotels and other logistics, as such, the location on your save the date card may only name the island where your wedding will be held. It is a good idea to also include your wedding website address where you can add hotel and flight information as you make your decisions.

Addressing and assembling wedding invitations can often take much longer than you think.
Destination Wedding Invitations Wording

Choosing the correct wording is one of the most confusing parts of designing your destination wedding invitations. In this article, part of the guide to designing your destination wedding invitations, I’ll walk you through the ins and outs of what to say in your wedding invitations.

Proper etiquette for wedding invitations can seem intimidating at first glance. But a common mistake is to think of etiquette as rules when in reality, etiquette is really just a series of guidelines and those guidelines are based on common sense.

When it comes to wedding invitations or any invitation for that matter, its common sense to make sure to include some crucial pieces of information: who, what, where and when. That’s it!

From there, you can be as traditional and formal or as creative and fun as you like.

For more formal weddings, there’s nothing wrong with using the tried and true traditional wedding invitation wording. But destination weddings are anything but traditional, so feel free to be as creative as you want. Just make sure that you cover the basics in your invitation.

To do that, I’m going to walk you through a traditional wedding invitation so that you can ‘how it’s done’ but I encourage you to put your own spin on things. Some traditions are meant to be bent, and others are meant to be broken!

The Anatomy of a Wedding Invitation

Below is a sample wedding invitation, based on the ‘rules’ of etiquette for a formal wedding. Note how this information covers the important information – who is hosting, that the event is a wedding, who is getting married, and where and when the event is taking place.

Mr. and Mrs. James Edward Jones
Request the honour of your presence at the marriage of their daughter
Rebecca Elizabeth
to
Adam David Armstrong
time and date

THE HOST LINE

The host line informs the reader who is hosting the event.

Traditionally, this is the bride’s parents, but ever-changing family structures, the acceptance of same-sex marriages, and financial dynamics mean that this may include the groom’s parents or the couple themselves. And those changes may require changing the order below.

Courtesy Titles

The most traditional and formal invitations include the use of courtesy titles such as Mr., Mrs., Doctor etc.

When using these titles, Mr. and Mrs. can be abbreviated but any other titles (or suffixes – such as Junior or Doctor) should be spelled out.

If you choose to use courtesy titles, remember: most married couples follow the standard format: Mr. and Mrs. Husband’s Full Name.

Omitting courtesy titles is a little less formal and it also allows the use the first names of married women. If you use this option, you should omit middle names as well.

If the bride’s parents are hosting, use the phrase “of their daughter” before the bride’s name on the request line.

If the groom’s parents are hosting, use the phrase “to/and their son” before the groom’s name on the Bride and Groom Lines.

If both parents sets of parents are hosting, each set of parents names are listed on separate lines starting with the bride’s parents with an “and” on its own line between the sets of names.

If they have different surnames, an “and” joins them.

If they are divorced, names are listed on separate lines without an “and” between them and the mother’s name is always first. If she has remarried, use her married name.

*Traditionally step-parents are omitted, but you can include them if you like. If the remarried parent has a different surname from his or her spouse, put the birth parent first.

If one parent has passed away, the deceased parent is not traditionally included on the invitation. But you might want to include them anyway. If this is the case, in order to make it clear that the deceased parent is not issuing the invitation, the deceased parent is usually mentioned after the bride or groom on the Bride and Groom line using the phrase “daughter of the late…”

If the couple is hosting the wedding, omit the host line altogether, begin the invitation with the Bride and Groom Lines, followed by the request line. Another option is to use the phrase “Together with their families” in the host line.

THE REQUEST LINE

The request line invites the reader and specifies the event. The two most traditional phrases included in this line are “request the honor of your presence” and “request the pleasure of your company.” The first indicates the ceremony will be in a house of worship; the second indicates that it will not. Other examples include “would be delighted by your presence” and “invite you to join them,” and “invite you to share in the joy/celebration.”

The second part of this line specifies that the event is a wedding. “at the marriage of” is the most commonly used wording, however “to the wedding” or “wedding celebration of.” If the bride and groom are hosting, <g class="gr_ gr_99 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="99" data-gr-id="99">common</g> wording might include “at their marriage,” “at their wedding celebration,” and even “to witness their wedding and celebrate the beginning of their lives together.”

To add a bit of fun to your destination wedding invitation, you might consider using wording on your something like:

..request the pleasure of your company

as we fly away to celebrate the marriage of…

THE BRIDE AND GROOM LINES

Regardless of who is hosting this destination wedding, the bridal couple are the stars of this show and their names should be set apart (in larger or different font) and on separate lines. The “to,” “and” or ampersand between them should go on it’s on its own line. Traditional American formatting uses the word “to;” although some Jewish formats use the word “and.”

If the bride or groom’s last name is the same as her/his parents listed on the host line, only her/his given and middle names are used. No courtesy title (Miss, Ms. or Mr.) are used.

THE DATE AND TIME LINES

Spell out numbers and capitalize proper nouns only; you can begin these lines with the prepositions like “on” and “at” (not capitalized) if you’d like. The day, date and month are traditionally spelled out, and the year is usually omitted (unless you want to date the invitation for keepsake value). The time should be spelled out as well using “o’clock” or “half past.” But don’t worry about using a.m. or p.m., or a phrase such as “in the evening,” unless it is unclear, such as for an eight o’clock wedding. Using numerals is a more modern practice, however, it is not necessarily more casual. Whether you choose a traditional or modern style, make sure you use it uniformly throughout.

THE LOCATION LINE

It is traditional not to include street addresses of houses of worship or well-known locations. Commas are not used at the ends of lines, and the state is always spelled out. The ZIP code is omitted.

For a St. Thomas destination wedding invitation, the address is usually not necessary. Most of your guests will be taking taxis, or you will have most likely included a map in your wedding invitation suite. Leave the address out to keep your invitation uncluttered.

ST. THOMAS WEDDING L<g class="gr_ gr_92 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="92" data-gr-id="92">OCATIONS</g>

THE RECEPTION LINE OR CARD

While the reception information is sometimes included on the main invitation, you can also use a SEPARATE CARD. This is particularly helpful if the reception is at a different location than the ceremony or does not begin immediately after. By using a separate card, your invitation will remain uncluttered.

If you choose to include reception information on the main invitation, you might use a phrase like “reception to follow”, “reception immediately following” or “dinner and dancing to follow.” If you are not serving a full meal, it is a good idea to let guests know by using a phrase such as “champagne toast to follow” or “cocktail reception and cake immediately following the ceremony.”

THE R.S.V.P. LINE OR RESPONSE CARD

Brides today generally include a REPLY CARD that matches their wedding invitation, as well as a stamped envelope to encourage guests to respond to their invitation in a timely manner. Traditional etiquette does not require this. If you choose not to include a response card, include a line on the lower left corner of the invitation that says “R.S.V.P.,” the date by which you need the response, and the method by which they can respond (mailing address, phone number, email address, or WEBSITE).

Smart tip: Since people sometimes forget to write their names on the reply card, number your guest list, and then lightly pencil the proper number on the back of each reply card before tucking it into the addressed invitation.

SPECIAL DETAILS TO C<g class="gr_ gr_95 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="95" data-gr-id="95">ONSIDER</g>

If you want to stress the importance of the style of dress – black tie, for instance, or casual attire – <g class="gr_ gr_102 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" id="102" data-gr-id="102">place</g> that information in the lower right corner, or on the reception card. For your destination wedding invitation, you might consider using wording to remind guests to wear or bring their <g class="gr_ gr_97 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_disable_anim_appear ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="97" data-gr-id="97">flip flops</g>, regardless of the level of dress you expect them to wear.

The only thing that should not be included anywhere on your invitation – or in your invitation suite – is your REGISTRY INFORMATION. The only place where it is acceptable to include registry information is on your website. Once you register, tell your family and bridal party the details. They will spread the news or guests will ask you directly.

If your wedding is adults only, be sure to address your invitations properly. It is not acceptable to say “adult only” anywhere in your invitation or invitation suite.

HOW TO PLAN A DESTINATION WEDDING IN ST. THOMAS, VIRGIN ISLANDS

If you’re like most of my clients, you’ve never planned a wedding before. Most likely, you’ve never even been to the Virgin Islands and you have no idea how to start the planning process. Which makes sense.

I mean, if you’re planning a wedding on your home turf, then you’d probably already have a few venues and even a few vendors in mind. And of course, you have family, friends, and co-workers for referrals.

But instead, you’re starting from scratch with an island wedding. And you have the daunting task of spending countless hours searching, researching and <g class="gr_ gr_20 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del" id="20" data-gr-id="20">re-searching</g> before you.

Research is good, but why not get the answers from an expert? (Hint: That’s Me!)

THE CRUCIAL FIRST STAGE OF WEDDING PLANNING: THE PRE-PLANNING

You know the adage “measure twice, cut once”? Well, it doesn’t actually tell you anything about planning your project. Before you’re ready to even measure, you’ve got decisions to make. For example, if you were building a cabinet, you’d need to know what it’s for, where it is going, and a myriad of other details. You would need to make some pre-planning decisions before making that first measurement and cut.

The same is true with wedding planning.

Researching options and exploring ideas is a great way to start the process of planning your wedding.

But, believe it or not, many couples jump headlong into the planning process without really considering or discussing some crucial and important things. And with so much to read and digest and decide on out there, they waste a lot of time scouring the internet and find themselves no further along.

At this point, I imagine you’ve sat down and talked with your fiance (or are preparing to do so tonight) about the type of wedding you’d like – specifically whether or not you want a destination wedding and where and when that destination wedding might be.

In this Pre-Planning stage of wedding planning, the first thing you should discuss with your partner is the where, how, and the when of the big day.

For The Where – my vote (if it counts for anything) is St. Thomas or St. John, US Virgin Islands! (Duh!)

Once you’ve narrowed down your island, you’ve probably also decided The How of getting to the island – via cruise or staying with us for a few days (or more!) at a hotel or vacation villa.

If you’re staying with us on the island, you don’t need to know all of the specifics such as accommodations, etc, just yet. That’s something we can discuss when we delve into the planning process. After covering The Where and The How – you should also start thinking about …

The When of your big day. Unless you’re planning to get married on your anniversary, or some other prescribed date (for example 9/19/19, 2/20/20 – hurry, these dates go fast!), you don’t have to set a firm date yet. But it’s a good idea to set a date range or <g class="gr_ gr_19 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="19" data-gr-id="19">season</g> like next May or June, or next winter. That way, we’ll know how long we have to get things planned.

Once you have some of the preliminary stuff worked out, you’re almost ready to go crazy and start pinning beach wedding photos to your Pinterest board BUT there are some other <g class="gr_ gr_139 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="139" data-gr-id="139">element</g>s you’ll want to have put some thought into before we dive too deep into planning your wedding.

PRE-PLANNING STAGE 2: WEDDING SIZE & GUEST LIST

Guest List Advice: Invite all the grandparents (even the mean ones). Don’t invite the whole office, unless you really love them. Don’t use your wedding to reconnect with friends you’ve lost touch with. Don’t let your parents go wild with invites…unless they’re paying for it all.

Your wedding’s size is one of the most important details in all of the wedding planning decisions. Having a general sense of the size of the wedding will help direct all future discussions and decisions, from the location to the timeline to the cake. You two should start thinking about whether you want to:

Elope (and/or maybe bring a few guests)

Have an intimate celebration (maybe 20 or less)

Have a small wedding (maybe 20 – 40 guests)

Have a blow out bash (50+ guests)

Having a sense of the size of your wedding will set you up for the Final Stage of Pre-Planning: Budgeting.

PRE-PLANNING STAGE 3: BUDGETING

So now you know you know all about the island (that it exists, how to get here, and why St. Thomas is the best choice for your wedding), and have an idea of the type of wedding you want to host ( a big bash, something intimate, or screw hosting, we’re eloping!). Now it’s time to talk about how much it’s going to cost?

WRONG!!!

I’ve found that in the wedding industry as a whole, vendors, blogs, other websites seem to avoid the topic of money. And yet, this is one of the most important things to consider when planning your wedding.

Before diving into costs and decisions and looking at all of the pretty things, the best thing you can do to make planning your wedding as easy as possible is to figure out how much you have to spend.

I’ve found that budget isn’t a really good word to describe what you need at this stage. I checked out a thesaurus (don’t judge me) in search of a better word. It suggested “allowance”, “allocation” or “quota:. I happened to like “allocation”. Because budget could include every penny you spend on the entire trip (accommodations, travel, rental cars, food, excursions, etc.).

So instead of thinking of this stage as ‘budgeting’ (calculating each expense in excruciating detail), think of this stage as ‘allocating’ for the actual wedding costs.

Separating or allocating an amount <g class="gr_ gr_48 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="48" data-gr-id="48">for</g> wedding expenses will make everything easier down the road.

The question to ask yourselves is how much do you plan to spend on your wedding? You don’t need an exact figure but you’ll want to know a range that you want to stay within.

If at this stage, you just have a grand total number for the entire trip and wedding, say $15,000, start by taking a look at airfare and accommodations (check out any travel site – Orbitz, Expedia, etc.) and subtract that amount from the big number.

So if travel and accommodation are $5,000, you’ll have approximately $10,000 for the wedding. A great place to start!

You can find many wedding budget calculators online. I don’t find them nearly as helpful as calling an actual, local wedding planner like me. But they are a good start to give you a general sense of average numbers.

NOW WE CAN START PLANNING!!!

That’s right, we can finally jump headlong into planning and make the hard decisions like whether you will have a ‘first look’ before the ceremony, chose which world-class beach for your wedding ceremony, and select the perfect flavor for your wedding cake.

In fact, the ease of the marriage license application process is one of the top selling points of getting married in the Virgin Islands.

Bring the license with you to the ceremony and the wedding officiant or minister and witnesses will sign after the ceremony.
If you are going to the courthouse on your own, simply let your cab driver know that you are going to the Superior Court for a marriage license (next to Fort Christian). If you are driving, the courthouse is located at the intersections of routes 30 and 35. There is a stop light at the intersections and a large parking lot across the street (you’ll see a big red fort – Fort Christian). Park there for the day and walk to the shops after picking up your license.

For more information, visit the USVI Superior Court website. Just a word of caution, the court’s website hasn’t been updated in a while and is in need of a little love.

There are several pieces of outdated information.

A birth certificate is NOT required to pick up your marriage license. Only a government-issued photo ID is required. In the case of non-US citizens, you will need to bring your passport.

The courthouse allows pick up of the marriage license between 8 am and 5 pm on normal business days. The website says 2:30 because that’s when the cashier leaves, but if you’ve followed the directions above, you will have paid both the application fee ($100) and the license fee ($100), totaling $200, when you sent in your application. This also will expedite the pickup process so that you can get back to your vacation that much faster

The language on the website speaks of ‘brides’ and ‘grooms’. Same-sex weddings are legal in the USVI. When you click to download the forms, you’ll see that the forms have been updated to be gender neutral.

Not to be confused with the British Virgin Islands (BVI), the US Virgin Islands (USVI) are comprised of three main islands: St. Thomas, St. John, and St. Croix. You’ll also hear about “The Fourth Virgin” which is Water Island, located in the Charlotte Amalie Harbor.

St. Thomas, St. John and Water Island are geographically close to one another and traveling between islands takes 20 minutes by ferry.
A Little History Of the Virgin Islands

Now I’m about to drop a little history…and while I admit this has almost nothing to do with weddings, I love the history of our little islands! And if you ever find yourself on Jeopardy, you’ll be glad to know all of this:

Originally a Danish outpost in the early days of exploration and piracy, the Virgin Islands for a big pile of gold ($25 million). I always imagine a bunch of guys around a table. And then someone throws a bunch of gold bars, and then they all smoke cigars.

Around the time of World War I, the Virgin Islands were considered a military asset and outpost for guarding against enemies trying to attack the US from the Caribbean Sea. (Or maybe they secretly knew that one day, the most beautiful weddings in the world would be hosted here!)

That momentous day when the Virgin Islands became US Territories is now celebrated by locals during their day of independence, known as “Transfer Day”. It’s also a great reason to give everyone a day off from school and work. (Except for me, if your wedding is on Transfer Day.)

Reflecting the islands’ Danish roots, when visiting historic districts, you’ll find the architecture is distinct and beautiful dating back hundreds of years. Most of the street names in downtown Charlotte Amalie (the capital of St. Thomas) are completely unpronounceable (Kronprindensens, Wimmelskafts or <g class="gr_ gr_70 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="70" data-gr-id="70">Regjerings</g>).

The few street signs all have the word “Gade” after the name which is Danish for “street”. Everyone (even locals) in St. Thomas will tell you that it should be pronounced “Gada” (rhymes with Prada), but I have it on good authority that the true Danish pronunciation sounds like “Ge-<g class="gr_ gr_62 gr-alert gr_spell gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim ContextualSpelling ins-del multiReplace" id="62" data-gr-id="62">ud</g>“.

Regardless, the only thing you need to know is that it’s definitely not “Gade” (rhymes with shade).

Among the beautiful historical buildings in downtown Charlotte Amalie, you’ll find streets and alleys that lend themselves to strolling and exploring.

Most of the streets are filled with shop after shop. When I’m downtown, I try to ignore the shops and soak up the history a little…but eventually, I do get sucked into a jewelry store or two.

Heading downtown to the historic district is one of my favorite things to do with couples after the wedding. The buildings make the perfect backdrop for off-the-beach couple’s portraits.

“The Rock” and “Love City”

St. Thomas is known as “Rock City” or “The Rock”. And that’s because it’s a large chunk of rock, floating in the sea. Don’t worry, they tie the islands down at night so they won’t float away. The terrain is made up of hills and small mountains, so it’s not the most pedestrian-friendly locale.

St. Thomas is 31 square miles (about the size of Manhattan) with only 55,000 full-time residents. There can be up to 20,000 “temporary residents” on busy cruise ship days, as cruise ship passengers come ashore.

St. Thomas is located at Latitude 18. You’ll see a lot of souvenirs and gifts that reference Latitude 18…and now you know why.

Just a few miles to the east of St. Thomas, St. John is known as “Love City”. And that’s because…I have no idea.

St. John is largely undeveloped, covered mostly in <g class="gr_ gr_77 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins doubleReplace replaceWithoutSep" id="77" data-gr-id="77">tropical</g> jungle. Other than Cruz Bay, the island is pretty quiet. Cruz Bay, however, is loaded with shops and activity. If your wedding party is looking for a fun night out on St. John, you’ll probably end up in one of the many restaurants or bars in Cruz Bay.

At 20 square miles, St. John is smaller than St. Thomas and has less than 10,000 full-time residents. And because of most the island is National Park, the island seems untamed, rugged, and secluded.

If you’re into hiking and exploring, there are numerous trails and off-the-beaten-path beaches to discover.

A Word of Caution: Before you start dropping names like a boss – I’ve never heard “Small City” before in my life. Just call it Water Island.

And if you’re keeping track, even smaller than St. John is Water Island. Dr. Google just informed me that Water Island is sometimes referred to as “Small City.” It’s only 500 acres with a population of 182 souls as of the last census.

Water Island has one notable beach with a couple of beach bars if you want to spend the day there. Transportation is limited to golf carts which you can rent and explore the island if you wish.

BY AIR – Flying to St. Thomas/St. John

There’s no airport on St. John (or Water Island), so if you’re flying in, you’ll fly into the Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas (Airport Code STT). It’s a tiny airport but several major carriers come through including United, American and Jet Blue.

If you have the chance to connect through on regional carrier Cape Air, you’ll get a great view of the islands and clear waters of the Caribbean. They operate small prop planes and run flights between Puerto Rico and St. Thomas. They also service the Northeast and Cape Cod…hence the name.

As a reminder, there’s no passport required for US citizens for travel from the mainland to the US Virgin Islands.

If your destination is St. Thomas, then you’re just a short taxi ride away from your hotel or villa; and only 10 minutes from the courthouse if you’re doing your marriage license here. There are plenty of taxis and a dispatcher waiting as you walk out of the airport. You can also hire a private taxi or have a limousine waiting for you when you arrive.

If your wedding is on St. John or Water Island, you’ll have a quick drive to the ferry dock and then a short ferry ride to either island. Ferries to St. John leave St. Thomas every hour from Red Hook and more sporadically from downtown Charlotte Amalie. The Water Island ferry is more sporadic, but you can see the ferry schedules here.

BY SEA – Cruising to St. Thomas/St. John

St. Thomas is a bit of a cruise ship mecca. I don’t have official numbers, but I’m guessing it’s one of the most popular islands in the Caribbean for cruise ships. St. Thomas loves cruise ships so much, it has 2 separate docks to accommodate up to 6 ships on a given day. And sometimes even more anchored in the harbor.

The two docks, West Indian Co. and Crown Bay, are within 10 minutes of each other (and with downtown Charlotte Amalie and the courthouse right in between them). There are taxis lined up as you get off the ship but I recommend pre-booking your ride to your wedding ceremony so you don’t have to wait in the dispatch line or have to ride share.

Important note about coming via cruise ship:

The Virgin Islands are in the Atlantic Time Zone and we are too cool for daylight savings time.

Why does this matter? Almost every ship departing from the US mainland operates on Eastern Standard Time throughout the cruise – so you don’t have to change your clocks again after flying to the east coast.

In the summer months (once you have sprung forward), this won’t matter. Eastern Time and Atlantic time will be the same.

But in the fall and winter months (when you’ve fallen back), that’s another story. We’ll be 1 hour ahead of eastern time, so when arriving in port, you’ll need to ensure that you and your guests are operating on “St. Thomas Time” or Atlantic Standard Time.

For those of you flying into the islands, you’ll need somewhere to lay your head. Before we start to talk about where that might be, I want to first tell you that St. Thomas and St. John <g class="gr_ gr_62 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="62" data-gr-id="62">aren’t</g> like many of the other Caribbean Islands. Visitors don’t typically lock themselves in a resort and never leave the property.

Our islands are small. St. Thomas is only 13 miles long. So rarely are car rides more than 15 minutes to get anywhere.

Hotels/Resorts

There are many hotel and accommodation options. You can go for the mega-resort experience at hotels such as the Marriott Frenchman’s Reef on St. Thomas or the Westin on St. John. If you’re looking for a luxury resort, check out the Ritz-Carlton on St. Thomas or Caneel Bay on St. John. There are also several small boutique properties on both islands. The best way to check out resort options and pricing for hotel rooms is to do a little research on orbitz.com.

Villas/Condos

Now that we’ve covered hotels, I’ll let you in on a secret. As you know, the islands are small and easy to get around. If you want the most bang for your buck, check out vrbo.com. There are literally hundreds of condos and vacation villa rentals available.

To see everything that St. Thomas and St. John have to offer, check out VRBO.com.

You’ll find awesome, beachfront studio, one, two and three bedroom condos at properties that have amenities like pools and multiple restaurants. One of my favorite locations is Sapphire beach.

At Sapphire Beach, there are 4 distinct condo properties at varying price points, all just steps from the beach with amazing views.

If you have a bigger group, there are also several vacation rental homes available, some oceanfront, some with sweeping hilltop views, and most with a glorious infinity edge pool. I’ve found that staying at a villa with family is a great idea for a few reasons:

You get to spend more time with your guests. In a hotel, you’ll most likely be on different floors or even in different buildings. So getting everyone together can be difficult.

In most cases, a vacation villa is more affordable than a hotel.

Having your own kitchen means you won’t have to eat out for every meal. (My husband can last an entire day on a gallon of milk and a couple of boxes of cereal.)

Privacy. A private pool. A private estate. All to yourself. No sharing with 300 strangers.

And the best reason – there are quite a few villas that allow weddings and events on property. There’s the convenience of not having to travel all over the island on your wedding day. Oh, and at a villa, you’re not subject to buy out fees and venue fees!

My three favorite villas for weddings on St. Thomas are Villa Serenita, Indochine Estate, and Sand Dollar Estate. But I recently discovered Infinity and I’m in love!

Not only are these three villas absolutely beautiful and an amazing option for your vacation stay<g class="gr_ gr_25 gr-alert gr_tiny gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-ins replaceWithoutSep" id="25" data-gr-id="25">,</g> they are also great choices to host your destination wedding.

So now, let’s talk about having a destination wedding.

A wedding in the Caribbean is a dream come true for many. And although you now know a bit about the islands, you might still be wondering whether or not a destination wedding is right for you.

For some couple’s, the answer is an automatic yes.

Some couples choose a destination wedding because of the location is significant to them – it’s where they fell in love or got engaged. For others, a destination wedding appeals to their love of travel and far away places.

And then there are some couples who are stressed out of their minds about planning a wedding at home, so they decide to run away and do something fun and easy.

01. A Unique Experience

I always tell my clients that there are no rules for destination weddings – other than that you must be sure to say “I Do” when the time comes.

When planning a destination wedding, you can get creative – exchange vows on a beach, a sailboat, in sugar mill ruins or at a million dollar villa. You can have a religious ceremony in a Caribbean church followed by a breakfast celebration or a beach party and BBQ.

Note: Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day; my food o choice is slightly-burnt waffles with real maple syrup.

Even if your wedding vision is traditional, a destination wedding in the islands will be unlike any other wedding you’ve ever seen.

02. It’s a Once-in-a-Lifetime Reunion

Spending a vacation with family and friends offers a lot of one-on-one time with all of your guests.

Imagine having close friends and family from each stage of your life in one magical place for the purpose of celebrating you and your love. Whether they are coming from around the country, or even the globe, your wedding will not only be a vacation but a once in a lifetime opportunity to reunite with those that matter most.

This is one of my favorite things about destination weddings!

For me personally, every time I attend a wedding for one of my friends, I am going to a destination wedding.

You see, traveling from the islands to my friends’ weddings in the mainland US is like traveling somewhere exotic to me (even Milwaukee, Wisconsin). I’ve gotten to enjoy some fantastic and delicious locations. Locations with stores like Target and Whole Foods. And they have these places called “malls” where there are literally hundreds of stores that sell everything my heart desires.

But in reality, when I’ve attended weddings for friends, I travel, but these aren’t true destination weddings for the couple or the other guests. The bride, the groom and most of the guests are local to the area, and somehow I don’t get to see the couple, except <g class="gr_ gr_106 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar replaceWithoutSep" id="106" data-gr-id="106">from</g> my seat in the audience.

That is not the case with a true destination wedding. They tend to last a few days, giving you and your fiance plenty of time to just hang out and really celebrate with your loved ones.

03. They’re Cost-Effective

That isn’t to say that a destination wedding will cost pennies on the dollar compared to a traditional wedding at home, BUT as the guest list shrinks, so will your costs. And you get a lot more value for your $$$. (For example, if you had to pay $3,000 for your venue at your local party center vs. $3,000 for a venue that overlooks the Caribbean Sea.)

You also have the chance to have a non-traditional wedding without the pressure of doing things the ‘right’ way. I’ve never had a guest complain that a couple chose to have a snorkel sail instead of a traditional wedding rehearsal dinner. The usual response to any activity is “Wait? What? Whoo-hoo!” Seriously, who wouldn’t love celebrating with you on your wedding day on a gorgeous beach and then getting to actually swim in that crystal-clear, blue water?

04. You’ve Got a Built-in Honeymoon. Did you know that something like 90% of couples <g class="gr_ gr_124 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar multiReplace" id="124" data-gr-id="124">don’t</g> have a honeymoon? Sounds crazy, right? Well, that’s not true for a destination wedding – you get one thrown in for free!

Things to Do in St. Thomas and St. John

Curious about what you might do on your Virgin Islands Vacation? While you’re down here, make sure you take advantage of everything there is to do and explore in the Virgin Islands.

// 01. –Get Married of Course!!! But when you’re not at the wedding, you’re on vacation, on a tropical island. It’s paradise.

// 02. –The Beach and Water Activities. Most of the things to do when in St. Thomas and St. John center around being at the beach or the water. There are so many beautiful beaches to visit and enjoy. And while you won’t run out of beaches, even if you visit two per day, I recommend spending at least one day out on the water for a sailing tour, snorkel tour or powerboat adventure.

// 03. –Be on Vacation. There are tons of sites to see, but you didn’t come to a Caribbean island for a fast paced vacation. Take the time to relax. Get a massage. Find a shady spot by the pool, or even better, on the beach and grab a nap. Then have a fantastic dinner at an amazing restaurant.

// 04. –Go Adventuring. I know I just said to relax and nap, but come on, you’re on vacation and who knows when you’ll make it back. Let’s make the most of it. Go hiking in the National Park on St. John, take a zip line canopy tour on St. Thomas, go horseback riding, or try to survive the Devil’s Triangle at Mahogany Run Golf Course.

WHAT NEXT?

So there you go, the decision has been made, you’re getting married in the Virgin Islands…what next?

It’s time to send me a note to start the planning process! If you’re planning a traditional destination wedding, elopement, cruise ship wedding or vow renewal, the first thing you should do is call 340-642-0195 or contact me to get started.
