  • You pull up to a lovely stable for your lesson with a new trainer. There are fancy cars and lots of stalls. You notice there aren’t any horses outside and it’s a beautiful, bug-free day. Not much turnout, sure, but at least a few horses should be out, no? You go into the stable and see all 22 horses inside dark, dusty stalls. The lesson horses are in fair weight, but their tack is disgusting and there are signs of neglect everywhere. Parked out front of the stable is the owner/manager’s fancy sports car. The girths inside are falling apart. The DILEMMA: The trainer has been recommended by a few people you hold in high regard. What do you do?
  • You see a fellow boarder mistreating her horse and she doesn’t know you’ve seen anything. Do you speak up about it? If so, to whom?
  • If you were invited to a fancy dinner party overseas and horsemeat was on the menu, would you try it?
  • A trail buddy has been riding rather dangerously. There aren’t many folks to ride out with these days. Do you go with him or do you pass on the company and ride out alone?

• The Mustang Heritage Foundation, in cooperation with the BLM, created the Extreme Mustang Makeover event in order to recognize and highlight the value of Mustangs through a national training competition. About the Spurring Incident from Episode 4:  Regarding  the trainer who won the derby cross at Myopia: According to Dictionary.com,  the word myopia not only describes an ophthalmic condition in which one can see only what is very close in front of him (in other words, nearsightedness), it is also defined as “a lack of foresight or discernment.”
 
The latter is most assuredly a fitting description of any trainer who puts winning above compassion, sportsmanship, or common sense.
 
Unfortunately, trainers like this have been around since the beginning of time and will probably continue to show up occasionally in the future. In my opinion, there is no talking to such individuals; they already think they know everything, will tell you to mind your business, and close themselves off.
 
The best thing that we can do is exactly what the good folks at the Myopia show did; strip him of his winnings, and banish him. A trainer who cannot compete will soon be a trainer out of business.
For those who don’t compete but rather run pleasure riding stables, it is up to savvy horse people to step forward and contact Animal Control when a horse (or any animal) is being abused.
 
One hopes that this trainer’s embarrassment will prompt him to reflect on–and change–his training philosophy.
 
And if not, let’s just hope the numerous other qualified and reputable trainers out there–those who train with integrity and are passionate about bringing out the best in horses and humans–will outshine the few bad apples.
 
And…I did have one other idea. Maybe someone who listens to this show and lives nearby this trainer could download “The Stable Scoop” onto a CD and send it to him in the mail. If he knew the entire country was talking about him, maybe he’d be “inspired” to try another approach to horsemanship.

The unofficial weekly radio show (podcast) that brings you news and interviews about the 2010 World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Lexington, Kentucky. We save you time by gathering all the important WEG news for you! Listen every week as the horse world gets ready for 2010! Part of The Horse Radio Network.
