Winters Reflections in Nature

I captured this water shot one winter day this January while visiting family on Long island. This was part of an old estate bulkhead at one time and now it was rotting away. There's a beauty in decay and nature didn't disappoint this day.
I was happy to see the reflections and capture it so well.
The wind was still,the sun's angle was just right so it worked out.
I'm starting to appreciate reflections more in my work; they are natures mirror.

A Little Sunshine in the Winter

I thought this yellow Water Lilly would brighten the mood up a bit as it's the middle of winter.

Even though we haven't received the usual snow and nasty weather (yet) I miss the cheery faces and smells of the flowers in my garden.
Photos remind us instantly of places, people, events, smells, sounds and feelings. It's amazing how powerful an image is.

In the Shadows..

This one is called " In the shadows of the morning fog". I like the eerie feeling I get from watching from the shadows of the trees.

It was taken in early October one foggy morning. Fog is one of my favorite subjects to use and photograph in my work.
It seems to take on a life of its' own.
I have other photos using fog as the main subject.

Autumn leaves are hot!

I listed this photo recently on my etsy shop..hot autumn leaves, it is about the vibrant colors of the autumn season and displays maple tree leaves as they are changing from cool green to spicy red and yellow hues.
This is my favorite time of year..at least for colors.
I love earth tones so October and November are ideal for those of us that love the reds, yellow,browns of the season.
Funny thing about these hues; they feel warm for such a cool time.
So grab your camera and snap away before they're all gone.

Surreal morning mist climbing the hill photo

I love to find the unusual shot and like many photographers, it may be a happy accident.
I woke up early last October and was excited to see the sun shining on the morning fog as it climbed up the hill.
It was so surreal...and of course, ran to get my camera. Shots like these don't always appear and so shot away in the cold morning air,even before my first cup of coffee. Now that's dedication!
Find something you are passionate about, learn everything you can.and practice, practice, practice...

Misty Autumn Morning Photo

Autumn is coming-you can feel it in the air. The mornings are very cool despite the fact that this is still August in Kentucky.
I grew up in New York and autumn always meant back to school. I have mixed feelings about that now as I was a teacher for years.yes,even teachers become nervous about returning.
I live in a rural area of Kentucky now and the landscaping is very beautiful. I guess beauty is int eh eye of the beholder. Some think that not having malls and subdivisions everywhere is dreadful. I prefer the trees, lakes and animals to people sometimes.
The leaves will be falling soon ,usually they all drop by Halloween. No I don't like that aspect ,not do I enjoy the long,cold winter,stuck in the house.The best part of winter is the quiet. No one is around,tractors are sitting still in the barns,kids are staying in the houses and the animals are tucked away till spring.

Momma Robin Hidden in Bush

I captured this photo of a momma Robin feeding her babies in a bush. She was very well hidden and I only discovered them after the babies began chirping.
The babies have very large mouths at this stage. This comical to see that they are all mouth when it comes to feeding. I guess that one with the biggest opening get feed!
nature photography has always been a favorite subject of mine. Animals are a challenge to shoot and I may have to shoot many times over a period of a few weeks to capture the right look.
Most of us that photograph nature can identify with this process I'm sure.It's gratifying to see the final product.

Take Photographs in a Different Eye

I like to photograph familiar items and some unusual shots of familiar items. Like most photographers, I look for the most interesting angle of a subject.
Here is a recent photo of one section of a vintage silver photo frame that had many details to it.

Anyone seeing this would assume it was a painting and rightly so. Most people aren't used to seeing things in a different way.
I think the most frustrating thing for me to hear is "that's pretty picture. " I like compliments but do they really see it? An image should invoke an emotion or memories from another time or place.

Isn't he cute? This little guy, all of 2 inches, was the perfect subject. He sat still, looked into the camera lens and posed for me.if he had any teeth, he may have smiled. LOL
Through the magic of post editing, I am able to present something not easily seen with the naked eye. If I hadn't see him move at first I wouldn't have noticed him.
I always take a number of photos whenever I'm shooting nature scenes. You never know how they will turn up after downloading them into the computer.

I woke up early one morning and noticed a heavy fog still lingering on the fields behind the house. Since it is early Autumn, the days are becoming cooler and nights fog is formed by the rivers and creeks all around.
It's a strange sight to behold; the early evening fog rolling in from the woods over the grass.
This happened when I lived near the bays and oceans and but didn't imagine seeing that happen when I moved inland .
I took the liberty to alter it a bit to enhance the mood.

Last of the Summer Beach Road Photo

This is a lonely beach road taken in East Islip, NY beach, near the marina. The beach is very well used in the warmer weather,especially by sports teams, and fishermen.
This is such a lonely place now.
I edited it in a washed out sepia tone to emphasis the feeling. The beach has such a different mood in the autumn.

What's Big , Yellow and Black and Hangs Around?

A big yellow and black spider was hanging around my lamp post just above the dying Day Lilly stalks. I thought it was another yellow flower and almost grabbed it.
I've never seen this before and was awestruck!
Of course I fetched my camera and snapped away!
A I ventured closer and closer, I began to wonder if I should be getting this close.

After all, some spiders jump,such as black widows.

I was almost bit by one of those as a kid!
In all it's ugliness,she is very pretty in her own way.

Dragonfly resting art photo

Dragonfly photo up close and personal.
I am so happy to finally photograph one of these!
They are not easy to catch but I found one resting outside my window in the garden.
This one is a real beauty; I don't know if it's male or female, but it's beautiful.

There were a few of them flying around so I waited for them to land and snapped a way.
It takes 10 or so bad photos to find one good one.
If you're patient you will be rewarded.

Photo Forgotten Road Uncovered from lake Cumberland

Here's a photo of a road that was covered for many years by lake Cumberland in Burnside,KY.
Since the near collapse of Wolf Creek Dam downstream from Burnside, the Army Corp of Engineers decided to lower the lake level to take pressure off the dam.
The lowered lake has produced some interesting sights. This road was the main road in the 1950's and ran through Burnside. The whole town had to be moved,and people re located when the dam was completed.
Many tunnels,caves and foundations of old buildings are uncovered now.
The dam is scheduled to be complete in 2012 and the lake level will rise again.
This is a good time to get the camera to photograph never seen places and objects.

Pink Hibiscus in Full Bloom

This vibrant pink flower is the size of a man's hand and blooms each year for about a week,if I'm lucky.
I'm not sure of the particular name of it but hibiscus are considered to ne wildflowers that grow anturally in the woods.
Mine grows behind the house ,in a sunny location.
I think pink is my favorite flower color, followed by yellow and then red.
i feel happy whenver I see it and other flowers .
Flowers are mother natures' smiles I guess.

Rabbits Romping in the Grass Photo

Here's a cute little bunny romping and playing in the yard with his friends. Every night before the sun sets, they come out of hiding and play in the yard,

They are fun to watch. Seems like they haven't a care in the world; just watch for dogs, eagles , hawks, coyotes and some guy with a shotgun.

Wildlife is one of my favorite subjects. Animals in their natural setting can be a challenge to shoot. I aim the camera at their direction and zoom in. As they get into my viewfinder I start snapping away.

I change the settings to see which is looking good.

The digital cameras are great!

Tell a Story with Many Shots of the Same Subject

You can tell a story in photos. Some refer to this method as photojournalism.

Shooting nature isn't always thought of when you mention photojournalism. Most of the time there are people and events being portrayed.

But I prefer to shoot nature and animals.

This is the continuing photo story of a Robin that visited last year and tried to build her nests in the oddest places. I made her the focus of my work; shooting her in different locations, in different light and weather conditions. I think it gave me good practice to shoot like this.

I remember feeling hesitant when first starting out with this new digital camera with a 10x zoom lens. I tried to zoom in at various distances and shot many times until I was happy .

It may keep a new photographer from shooting anything. Just go for it and learn as you go. You can make a photo book about an animal with many shots.

I know Why the Robin Sings Nature Photo

I know why the Robin sings. It's finally Springtime in the Lake Cumberland region so the birds are out in force!

This robin was captured in the big maple tree behind my house. After a few hours of waiting and watching I was able to get a few good shots!

She was busy gathering twigs and grass to build her nest. Unfortunately she chose to build it on my windowsill. For some strange reason,this robin didn't know where to build her nest. She had tried to build previous nests on the gutter downspout elbows, the gutter, and the top of the deck fence. I think she needs some help, because she may a little inexperienced.

No matter, I allowed her to continue building her nest on the windowsill.

I guess I felt sorry for her. She tried so hard!

Why not go out to the parks this week and try to capture animals in their natural habitat?

I love to photograph outdoor scenes and animals the best.

Photos that Capture the Beautiful Skies All Around Us

Whoever thought a sky could be so beautiful? Photographing the clouds and sky on a late April afternoon captured a scene that reminds me of a painting. Of course, I tweaked it a bit with photo editing software. The end result is a painted effect of a farmhouse that is dwarfed by the enormously beautiful, blue hues and billowing clouds of varying shades.

There are people who don't see the beauty in nature; I pity them.

I like to look for the unassuming, plain and less obvious gems in everyday life.

This is very calming and mellow photo of country life.

Though it's no Currier and Ives print, it does feel right to me.

Photographing is not just technique; it's a gut feeling. Much like painting, an artist has to "feel" the moment that it is right. Sometimes I don't realize I've captured a gem until it's in the downloading stage and I'm viewing it on the monitor.

Experiment with photo editing software and make different versions of one photo.

Your digital camera usually comes with software and you can also use free editions online. Two of my favorites to use is Piknik and Paint.net.

I first started using Piknik with my Flickr account. Now you can use it alone and create a lot of fun designs. Try them today.

Photographing Frozen Winter Scenes

This is turning out to be a long winter. Southern Kentucky usually has mild winters, but this is certainly an exception.

I captured some icy scenery last winter because I didn't think we'd ever see it again, but I was wrong.

I shot this icicle- draped clothes line pole during a snowstorm last year. The icicles make it appear as if it had long white hair. I guess you need to use your imagination. LOL

It was an eery and beautiful sight to behold.

Winter photography is a challenge. it challenges me to find some beauty in an otherwise ugly time of the year.

I usually choose the setting by experimenting with bunch of shots. Sometimes a night portrait setting does better on cloudy days than a daylight portrait setting. On snowy days I have used the sports or "action" setting.

Admittedly I am not an expert in the technical parts of photography.

I am only interested in the end product.
