You have the skills necessary to do the job; in fact, you’ve done similar jobs in previous companies. You know you rocked the interview, heck - you could probably do the job with your eyes closed.

The following week you get that anticipated follow up call from the employer, only to inform you that “…though your skills and qualification are impressive, you are not a cultural fit”…an ambiguous decline? Not for the employer.

So what does an employer mean by “cultural fit” – cultural fit means different things for different companies. Fit refers to not only fitting within the technical parameters of the job, but also how an individual aligns with the companies values, and norms as well as having those types of behaviours and qualities that will support their culture.

Are they a customer focused call centre environment, risk taking start-up company, or a conservative company steeped with tradition and slow to change? It goes to show that an individual who thrives in a fast paced, ever changing environment, won’t “fit” into a bureaucratic organization with loads of red tape.

So don’t take it personally, they’ve done you a favour.

It's the basics, but often over looked

Prior to a job interview, do your research on the company that you will be interviewing at. Find out their products and services, what their corporate culture is like, what awards and recognition they have received etc. Showing initiative in researching the company is an effective way of demonstrating to an employer that you are keen to work for their organization.
