Hi Denise
I am a final year photography degree student and for a project I am documenting Staffies and there owners. It’s to show the range of many different people that own and love the staffy breed and show that they are not like the media says and that they are not owned as status symbols but owned by families and older people as well.
If you are willing to get involved in the project it will be a few shots of you/you and your family and your staffy outside your house to show the different people that own the breed and try to prove that they are not the dangerous breed that people see them.
I am based in Woking, Surrey and I am willing to travel you will also receive a printed copy of the best shot.

A quick video for you. It is true that the camera puts on a few pounds and I was wearing 4 layers . At least that is my excuse!

The weather here in the UK is bitter at the moment and as humans we are turning up the heating. Something important to remember is that staffys, though a tough Dog are subject to extremes of temperature. At both ends of the spectrum both feeling the heat and the cold. This is especially true when it comes to staffordshire bullterrier puppies.

As a result consider getting your Staffy a coat. It can make a huge difference to their temparature.

Staffy puppy jumping is a fact of life when it comes to owning a Staffy dog. All puppies will jump. It is a natural habit for them especially when they live with humans. The challenge is that initially, your young Staffy puppy jumping up might be quite cute. However, longer term it can cause issues. Here are 3 tips that will work for you and your Staffordshire bullterrier puppy and a jump free life.

1. Don’t Reward Your Staffy Puppy with Affection

Staffordshire bullterriers are loving dogs as any Staffy owner will tell you. They like nothing better than to greet their owner by jumping up for a scratch or tickle.

Now dogs are not human and when they experience you being affectionate to them they perceive they have done something to be praised for i.e. jumping up.

Hard though it might be when you get home ignore your Staffy if it is jumping up at you. At all costs avoid eye contact and turn your back on them. They will soon walk away.

2. Reward positive behaviour.

Once they have walked away. Then you can greet them. Go over to them and bend down. Keep hold of their collar and pet them.They minute they start to jump up at you. Use a no command. Or walk away. You can also use a treat here to reinforce behaviour. Useful to all make sure you have some kibble in your pocket.

3. Be consistent at all levels

The thing with Staffy puppy training is you need to be consistent. This is a dog that loves affection and will attempt to get it from other members of the family. So you MUST make sure that everyone is behaving in the same way then your Staffy will get the message. In other words “If I jump up I don’t get a cuddle. If I sit and wait I do .”

Remember Staffy’s are intelligent dogs don’t misjudge the playfulness and happy smile for un-intelligence. It is the opposite.

Staffy puppies are cute and adorable. Well I guess most puppies could fit into that category. The small little bundle will soon grow up though and then things just might be different.

The Staffordshire bullterrier is the 5th most popular breed of dog in the UK and is also popular in Australia and parts of the US.

It is easy to see why when you look at this particular breed. The advantages are many. Here are just 4 facts that many Staffy owners supply for the reason they love this breed so much.

1. Affectionate

A Staffy pup loves nothing better than to snuggle up next to year. Ideally on your lap or sitting on your knee. It does not change as they get older either. They still love to be with you.

2. Small

This is a consideration for many new Staffy owners. The Staffordshire bullterrier generally is a small dog particularly in height. As usual the Staffy female is smaller than the male. Though they are a small Dog pound for pound they are one of the strongest dogs around. This is often misquoted by many people and ends up with people maligning the breed.

3. Short haired

This is a smooth coated and short haired dog. This has many benefits. Though if you suffer from allergies don’t think that you are safe if you have a Staffy. They still shed hair. A great plus point is that they need fewer baths. The coat they have is actually self cleaning and often a muddy Staffy will some how appear clean just hours later.

4. Good with Children

Staffys love children. In fact they have the nickname of the nanny dog. If you have children in your family a Staffy could in honesty not be a better pet.

Crate training is becoming popular as the must do thing when training a new puppy. Staffy puppies are one of the most popular dogs around and take well to living in a crate during their first months in a new home. Crate training has 2 distinct advantages when bringing up a young Staffy.

1. Security and Mimicking their Den

The general idea is that your puppy or dog is contained and starts to appreciate their boundaries. Staffys are affectionate dogs. As any owner will know that is an understatement. Yet there are many advantages in using a crate to establish control. Especially with a strong willed dog like a Staffy.

Points to consider is that the crate should not be used as punishment instead it needs to be a safe haven for them.

Staffys are part of the terrier breed and as a result like to stay enclosed. In the wild they will often bury themselves under leaves to feel warm and safe.

To some extent the crate mimics’ this. Giving your Staffy a sense of warm and safety.

2. Toilet or Potty Training

The other aspect that works well with a crate is that generally animal do not like to soil in their sleeping area. Using a crate can really help toilet training your Staffy puppy. You can establish an excellent routine with them by putting them into their crate at certain times of the day or night.

Crates are well worth the investment. You can continue using them forever or they can also double as a safe and secure transport method for your car.

Crate training is popular across the Globe though it has to be said more so in the US than in the UK.

The premise is the dog has its own “den” which is the crate. The Staffy pup of course generally does not like to soil in his or her own space so this helps in getting the dog used to where they can and cannot.

The general idea is that they sleep, rest, take naps and generally hang out in the crate.This is not a new idea, and you will find that many Staffys love being in a crate.

Flo our own Staffy had a crate for the first 6 months. The only reason we removed it was because
it was taking over the whole Kitchen!

We still use it to this day as a transportation method. In fact of her own volition if we are in the garage or garden and her Crate is around she will go inside it and sleep on her cushion which is kept there.

Smart Staffy! Staffy’s like many animals need to feel secure and a crate enables this to happen especially when they are first away from the pack.

Keeping your Staffordshire bullterrier puppy in their crate while it is home alone can also help prevent injuries as well as toilet training accidents

The crate becomes the puppy’s own space and provides it with feelings of security. Make sure they have their own toys inside to play with. Perhaps an old tee shirt of yours to snuggle up to if you are away.

Staffy Dog Jumping

How To Stop My Staffy Jumping is a question we often get from new Staffy owners? It does not matter if it is a Staffy pup or a Staffy dog. It is something they do

The challenge is though many of us Staffy owners are cool with it, friend’s family and fellow humans often don’t appreciate a big strong Staffy jumping on them. Especially with all the bad press surrounding this breed.

It is actually an easy habit to break. There are 2 important tips though that you need to implement for the best result;

1. Be Strong

Staffordshire bullterriers are one of the most loving dogs on the planet and they love to say hello!

So they often jump up for a greeting. We love them just as much so we end up stroking them.

No! No!

This is the issue. In their simple map of the world petting is something that happens as a reward so they think they have done something great.

You need to reverse it. So when they sit and stay then they get the reward.

Sounds good in practise and is often hard when they give you that indignant look.

Be strong and consistent and they will get the message. So when you walk in no eye contact look away and turn your back on them till they calm down. Then go and fuss them. You will be amazed how quick they catch on.

Staffy Puppies: Just Some of The Reasons They Are My Favourite Breed

Staffy puppies are popular across the globe and are not just a UK phenomenon.

I am biased I know and yet I can think of so many positive reasons why this is the Top Breed.

1. They look good.

I know I am biased again. If you have not been to the Staffy’s rule fan page for a while just go and have a look at the pictures and you will see what I mean

2. They are Intelligent

OK some people might think I am pushing this and I would love your feedback on this one. I know Flo understands a lot of what I say. And not just is it bonio time.

3. They are great Company

If you spend a lot of time on your own your Staffy will give you lots of love and affection. Is it just me or does your Staffy need to constantly press there body against you all the time!

4. They are Trainable

Yes they are. If you start early you can have an amazing Staffy. They even win obedience competitions.

5. They Are Clean…..You know what I mean

When we trained “toilet trained” Flo, or “potty trained” if you are from the US. She was dry at night in literally weeks. Within 5 months we did not have any accidents.

6. They have a fantastic Smile

Who can resist a Staffy smile?

7. Gorgeous Eyes

Biased again and a Staffys eyes are so powerful. Just make sure they don’t manipulate you to much.
