THURSDAY, July 7 (HealthDay News) -- While there has been a significant decline in colon cancer death rates in the past two decades, a new report reveals that the downward trend is not spread evenly across the United States, with the southern part of the nation lagging far behind the north.

Focusing on the time period between 1990 and 2007, the current study found that in certain instances the growing regional gap is quite dramatic: ranging from no drop whatsoever in colon cancer mortality rates in the southern state of Mississippi to a 33 percent plummet in colon cancer deaths across the northern states of Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York and Alaska.

"There is certainly a clear regional disparity in colorectal cancer death rates in the U.S.," noted study co-author Ahmedin Jemal, vice president for surveillance research at the American Cancer Society. "And there are several factors that might contribute to this."

"One factor may be colorectal screening rates, state-by-state," Jemal observed, "with indications of a much lower utilization of screenings in the southern states. And secondly, although we didn't collect data on treatment for colorectal cancer by states, we already know from previous studies that those who live in poorer neighborhoods and more rural areas are less likely to have insurance coverage, and less likely to receive standard treatment for colorectal cancer."

"And the third factor," he added, "is that smoking and obesity are known risk factors for colorectal cancer. And for both prevalence is much higher in the southern states, compared to other regions."

Jemal and his colleagues report their findings in the July issue of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention.

According to a separate report issued by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention earlier this week, declining colon cancer death rates have not stripped the disease of its deadly status. The CDC report noted that it currently ranks second among cancers as a killer of American men and women, and the American Cancer Society (ACS) report characterizes it as the nation's number three cancer killer.

Part of the continuing problem, according to the CDC, is that despite the availability of highly effective screening techniques, only two-thirds of Americans got tested for the disease in 2010. And although that figure represents a significant jump in screening rates (52 percent to 65 percent), 22 million men and women still did not get screened.

However, the CDC noted that colon cancer death rates have nonetheless plunged dramatically.

To dig a little deeper into how that breaks down state by state, the ACS authors analyzed 17 years of information reported by the National Center for Health Statistics.

The bottom line: Overall, the northeast saw a far greater drop in colorectal death rates than did the south.

For example, the team noted that northern states such as New York and Massachusetts saw their decline in colorectal cancer death rates pick up significant speed over the study period, from an annual drop of 2.5 percent n the 1990s to a annual drop of between 4 percent and 5 percent in the 2000s.

By contrast, southern states like Mississippi and Alabama saw their annual death rates remain more or less constant over the same timeframe.

Interestingly, the researchers found that over the study period the highest colorectal cancer death rates migrated. While the highest death rates had been found among northeastern states in the 1990s, by the mid-2000s the highest death rates were in states in the Appalachian corridor.

To get at what might be driving these state-by-state trends, Jemal and his associates stressed the marked regional differences in insurance coverage. For example, U.S. Census Bureau numbers for 2007 revealed that while nearly 19 percent of Mississippians and Louisianans lacked coverage at the time, that figure was just 5.4 percent in Massachusetts.

What's more, while the national poverty rate currently hovers at about 13 percent, that figure shoots up to one in five in Mississippi.

In terms of the prevalence of notable disease risk factors, the South has been less quick to kick the smoking habit than either the Northwest or West, the study authors noted, while obesity remains a greater issue in the South than in other regions of the country.

Dr. Felice Schnoll-Sussman, director of research at the Jay Monahan Center for Gastrointestinal Health at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City, said that while such underlying explanations "make sense," the findings are both "surprising" and "shocking."

"You might expect there might be some difference in the death rate between, say, a state like New York where you can bump into a physician at every corner, and other places where there aren't as many," she said. "You'd think we'd find maybe a 5 or 10 percent difference. But for there to be such a large difference is really what is so shocking and sad."

"And it's really unacceptable," Schnoll-Sussman added. "Because we have already made great strides in getting the word out that colorectal cancer is identifiable and treatable. So, I would say that this study isn't so much focused on trying to answer the question as to why this is happening as it is highlighting a call for action to try and make a difference for those patients for whom likely economic disparities are playing a huge role in all of this. So we need to continue to focus on access to care, education of the patient, education of the internists, open access to endoscopy and bringing down barriers related to the fear of having a screening done. That's where we can make an impact. That's where we can make a difference."

Certain tests need to be performed for a doctor to be able to diagnose lung cancer. Below is a description of some of the more common tests doctors use.

Chest X-Ray

A chest x-ray is the most common test used when lung cancer is suspected. It uses small amounts of radiation to take a picture of the inside of the chest, including the lungs. Tumors in your lungs can be seen on a chest x-ray. Your doctor may compare old chest x-rays with recent ones to see if the tumor is growing or shrinking.

Computed Tomography (CT) Scan

Computed tomography, also known as a CAT or CT scan, is another test used to help diagnose lung cancer. It’s similar to a chest x-ray but it gives a more detailed picture of the lungs. A CAT scan can detect extremely small tumors that may not be seen on a chest x-ray. Also, it may help your doctor determine whether or not the tumor has spread into the surrounding lymph nodes.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), or MRI, is similar to a CAT scan, but it uses magnetic fields instead of radiation to create a picture. An MRI produces clear images of your internal body parts, including tissues, muscles, nerves, and bones. Your doctor can use these images to detect the presence of tumors.

Positron Emission Tomography (PET) Scan, or PET scan, determines the way the cells in the body act in the presence of sugar. Normal cells take in sugar and use it to make energy. Cancer cells usually take in more sugar than normal cells. If you are going to have a PET scan, your doctor will give you a special type of sugar before the test. The PET scan will detect the presence of tumors by detecting “hot spots,” which are bright colored areas on the picture where the sugar has been taken in by cells. The more sugar the tumor takes in, the more likely it is a cancer.

A special type of PET scan is available, which involves the use of a special sugar called fluoro-deoxyglucose (FDG). This PET scan is useful in evaluating the extent of your cancer. More FDG taken up by your lung tissues can mean a more advanced stage of cancer. A PET scan using FDG is more accurate in determining the stage of your cancer compared to a CAT scan.

Sputum Cytology

In this test, your sputum (or mucous that is coughed up) is collected and examined under the microscope to look for cancer cells. The most accurate way to do this test is to collect and analyze early morning mucus for three days.

Biopsy

The techniques that allow the doctor to view the inside of your body do not test the tumor for the presence of cancer cells. So, these tests do not provide absolute proof that you have cancer. To confirm the presence of cancer, a sample of tissue from the tumor is necessary. A biopsy is the removal and examination of a tissue sample from the tumor to determine if it is cancerous (malignant) or non-cancerous (benign). Biopsies can be obtained in several different ways depending on the location and the size of a tumor. Below are different ways a biopsy can be taken.

Treatment of Non-small Cell Lung Cancer

In general, early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (stage 0-II) is treated with surgery. Surgeons cure many patients with early-stage lung cancer with a single operation. Radiation therapy can also be used to treat and cure early-stage lung tumors in people who cannot tolerate surgery. Stage III non-small cell lung cancer has spread so much that surgery or radiation alone is either impossible, or not enough to treat the disease. Patients with stage III disease have a high risk of the cancer returning, either in the same place, or at a distant location, even if surgery or radiation has completely removed the cancer. For this reason, doctors generally do not recommend immediate surgery, and may recommend immediate chemotherapy for patients with stage III disease.Chemotherapy can shrink a stage IIIA tumor, and make it easier for the surgeon to remove, or easier for the radiation oncologist to irradiate. In theory, since chemotherapy travels throughout the body it can kill cancer cells that have traveled to distant sites.Because of the highrisk of distant and local recurrence, stage IIIB tumors are usually not removed surgically, no matter how effective chemotherapy might be. For these patients, chemotherapy delivered at the same time as radiation has been shown to improve the ability of radiation to shrink the cancer. With these concepts in mind, patients with stage III disease are generally treated with some combination of chemotherapy followed by surgery, or chemotherapy followed by radiation. Some patients, especially those with stage IIIB disease, are treated with chemotherapy at the same time as radiation. Treatment of stage III non-small cell lung cancer with combination therapy has resulted in prolonged survival for many patients. Delivering chemotherapy and radiation at the same time may cause greater side effects.

Advanced Non-small Cell Lung Cancer Patients with stage IV non-small cell lung cancer or stage IIIB disease due to cancer cells in fluid around the lung (called "advanced" disease) are typically not treated with surgery or radiation. Rarely, a single brain or adrenal metastasis can be removed surgically or radiation can treat a single site of disease. However, patients with advanced disease are at very high risk for their cancer growing in a different location, so most patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer are treated with chemotherapy alone.

The goal of chemotherapy is to shrink the cancer, relieve discomfort caused by the cancer, and slow the spread of the disease. Rarely, chemotherapy can cause metastatic lung cancer to disappear completely, but these patients are still at very high risk of cancer returning. Therefore, patients with advanced disease are never considered "cured" of their cancer no matter how well the chemotherapy works. There are two things that will stop the spreading of cancer in its tracks. One is high levels of oxygen and the other is highly alkaline substances. Ionic water can be made to be highly alkaline.

While this brand of ionizer could be a cancer treatment by itself, in fact it is recommended to be used as a supplemental treatment. It is very synergistic with the frequency generator, but if a person cannot afford both (each is over $2,000), they should use the frequency generator because it works more directly against cancer.

If you do use both protocols together be sure to take some ionized water about 15 minutes prior to starting the frequency generator.

I do not recommend this product with the Cesium Chloride protocol because both of these protocols are alkaline protocols and they would be redundant.

Kangan water is just as good as this product but costs about twice as much.

Limu Juice

There are many brands of Limu Juice, and to be honest, I don't know which brand is the best for cancer. But I do know one brand which is superb at treating cancer. It can be a stand-alone protocol; but for now I only recommend it to "buy time" for advanced cancer patients. To "buy time" means it extends the life of the patient very significantly to allow other treatments to do their job. This product can give the main protocols several extra months to do their work!!

The number one priority for an advanced cancer patient is to supercharge the non-cancerous cells with nutrients. This product not only does that, but also helps to safely kill cancer cells with a molecule called: fucoidan. I have personally been aware of the effectiveness of this brand of Limu juice on "buying time" for a very advanced cancer patient.

The recommended therapeutic dose is 16 ounces a day for an adult. This daily dose should be spread out into several small glasses taken throughout the day!!

This natural plant of the Aloe family has been curing cancer in Brazil and Europe for decades. While it can be used as a stand-alone protocol, at the current time it is primarily recommended as a supplemental protocol to help other cancer treatments be significantly more effective.

The product not only includes the aloe arborescens plant, but also two other items to make the aloe arborescens more effective than it would be by itself. The exact formula has been refined over many years and is public information. Very few people have access to mature aloe arborescens plants, but fortunately high quality commercial versions which contain the formula are available.

Bob Beck was a PhD in physics who was an expert in electromedicine. He developed a protocol which used four different treatments:
1) Blood Purifier,
2) Magnetic Pulser,
3) Ozonated Water,
4) Colloidal Silver

This protocol is not strong enough to be a stand-alone treatment for cancer, but there are three situations where this protocol is critical. First, is in building the immune system. The Bob Beck protocol cleans the blood of microbes. By cleaning the blood of microbes the immune system will be rebuilt faster than normal treatments will provide.

Second, this protocol can stop the spread of cancer for several kinds of cancer: melanoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and uterine cancer. It may help stop the spread of cancer for other types of cancer as well, but this issue is still under research.

Third, is fast-spreading cancers. There are two reasons that cancer can be fast-spreading. First, the cancer cells divide at a higher than normal rate. Alternative Cancer Treatments For Stage IV Cancer Patients

As already mentioned, there are hundreds of alternative cancer treatments. However, less than two dozen of these protocols are strong enough to give advanced cancer patients real hope for survival.

There are five "Stage IV" protocols or "primary" protocols which will be discussed on this page. They are among the best of the best home treatments.

The natural question arises: can two primary cancer treatments be used at the same time? Generally, the answer is 'no'. These treatments are so potent that if they were to be combined they may kill too many cancer cells too fast resulting in too much debris for the liver to safely process.

Because the primary cancer treatments generally should not be combined, a list of "secondary" or "Stage IV Supplemental" treatments, which can supercharge the primary treatment, is provided. These treatments CAN generally be combined with the "Stage IV" protocols and "supercharge" them.
