I started thinking about tea, and my mind just went here. Sadly, I see more tea related comics in the immediate future. On the bright side, that means the Pirates may get new hats for a couple days. And new hats are always nice.

I had hoped to have more info on the pocket perspective, but it was not to be so. Actually, I did find out a fair amount of stuff, but nothing particularly useful or even funny.

I tend to think of the Little Pirate as being much smarter than his Captain. Part of that is probably the fact that I tend to put Eli’s mind into the Little Pirate, and Eli is really the most important person as far as the comic is concerned.

The book is still not done. I wish I had a better update than that, but I’m sticking to my goal of July 16, which is only a week away, so I need to get crackin’.

Did I spell “canon” right?

I wrote this fairly early, yet I’m finishing it up after midnight. sheesh.

Bad habits creeping in. It’s late as I write this and I have to avoid writing myself into a grim corner I don’t want to deal with again. (The Marble thing seemed like a good idea until I couldn’t figure out how to get out of the arc.) Two bad habits I need to get over.

I like the hats, I really do. I think everyone should wear one of these.

I’m learning the joys of tracing paper overlays in order to get proportions right without redrawing every figure. It makes life very handy.

I’m noticing a pattern in these stories where I tend to put myself in situations where I have to draw new stuff. I find that odd, since, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, I’m not a particularly good artist. But just look at today’s comic. It almost screams for Thursdays comic to have a dilophosaurus having tea with a Rex and Brontosaurus. Probably in a lacy hat. Maybe gloves. But now I have to draw that. Why do I do this to myself?

I like the idea of the ninja using alliteration to get his point across.

I also rather enjoy the Rex in headphones, and I think they turned out quite nice.

Just so you know, the comment about Dilophosaurus is broadly accurate. Of all the dinosaurs in Jurrasic park that both Crichton and Spielberg took liberties with Dilo was the most profound. These critters were originally somewhere around the 20ft long mark instead of about 5 as portrayed in the film. The spitting thing is completely made up, too, but I agree with Crichton it certainly makes for a more amusing story.

Man, that went faster than I thought it would.

I also thought I’d have the book ready to go by now, but formatting in Word has proven to be a bigger pain in the neck than previously suspected. I also have to try to rein in my desire to explain a lot of stuff that no one in their right mind would want to know. And, of course, trying to sort out talking about Eli without making the book a bummer. The comic simply would not exist without Eli, but it’s hard to laugh at a joke when you know the art was done by a dead kid. Part of me simply ignores that fact while I’m writing the strip. Maybe that’s why I’ve had so much trouble figuring out what to say; I hate coming to terms with it in no uncertain terms. (You see what I mean about over-explaining things?)

I work better with actual deadlines, so let’s say July 7th I’ll have a link up for the first 100 book. I’ll have more merchandise available before then. I just have to figure out if it’s worth putting up an actual store page or what I want to do.

Holy cow! I actually made it to number 100. 

Now, I’m going to take a two week hiatus and work on some stuff for the comic. The big project is a collection of the first 100 comics in print. I’ll have all of the comics in higher resolution and with comments and such available, probably from Lulu.com, by the time I come back with new comics. 

I’d also like to make the site look a little nicer. It gets the job done, but it could certainly be prettier. 

I’ll also do my level best to get some buttons and maybe t-shirts cranked out, but those aren’t too high on the list, unless I start getting lots of emails/comments asking for them.
