I think I mispoke and said it would be for making trap doors to use with the Sweetheart stamp set the heart shaped treat cups. When I downloaded the photos I intended to use, I realized I had photographed the circular cups. No worries, I'll go ahead with my tutorial and then show you how to adapt the instructions to the heart shaped treat cups.

I've forgotten how long tutorials take, and it's in progress. In the meantime, I've got some scrapbook pages to share with you. These are some of the pages that I created while on a recent scrapbooking weekend. (In an effort to keep the kids busy, my husband actually bought Moon Sand for my 3 year old and let him play with it in the family room - it might be a while before I score another weekend away!).

I really struggled with these pages, probably because the photos were of scenery and contain lots of natural colors. At the crop, I did the basic layout and matted the photos, but didn't adhere anything other than the title and the ribbon across the bottom (it's the reverse side of the Soft Suede Polka Dot grosgrain ribbon). Figured I'd glam it up a little more at home, and share the process with you. Sort of an evolution of a scrapbook layout!

The other day I was making cards with some of paper from the Sweet Pea Paper Stack. I was using the paper with the little turquoise and brown birds with really long legs on the Sahara Sand background. Needless to say, I had cut off their little legs, which now looked liked stripes on the patterned paper. The leftovers from my cards seemed perfectly suited for the Sahara Sand card stock of my layout. Tucked it slightly under the ribbon and got some instant interest on these plain pages. (I'll share the Sweet Pea bird cards with you soon - I have a whole series of them!)

Then I added the matted photos. There was quite a large space left for journaling, and I decided to use this cool shape made from the Top Note die. I provided a tutorial for this in a previous newsletter - if you missed it, sign up for my free monthly newsletter below and then shoot me an email to request the back issue with the Top Note tutorial.

I thought the journaling would be more in keeping with the layout if it looked like a sign, and immediately thought of the hemp twine. Decided to add some hardware and dug into my (retired) Antique Brass Hodgepodge Hardware. The sign is hanging from a Build-a-Brad containing a stamped image from the Autumn Days set. Here's a close-up of the sign:

All in all, I'm happy with how this turned out. I'm glad that I didn't adhere to much in the beginning, and gave it a little time. And look at those nice stripes in the photo above - you'd never know they were bird legs!

The take-away advice? If you're not satisfied with something, don't stick your layers or elements down. Keep them loose but together and re-visit them occasionally. Keep playing and substituting, and you'll find something that works!

Here are individual shots of both pages:

As promised, here are the other two cards from a class I taught at a scrapbooking weekend I helped run with some other Stampin' Up! demonstrators recently. I taught the class with another demonstrator, and shared the cards of my design in my previous post. The two cards I'm sharing here were Melissa's contribution to the class. After we taught the class, we sat down and made each other's cards, which was a nice treat for both of us.

Melissa borrowed the design of the first card from none other than Shelli Gardner, the co-founder and CEO of Stampin' Up!. Hey, if you're going to copy, do it from the best! This card was really fun to make because we used one of the stencils from the Definitely Decorative catalog (it's from the Elegant Trio on page 11). I haven't paid much attention to the stencils, but think I'll be correcting that soon! We held the stencil in place, and brayered over it with Versamark ink. You've got to press pretty hard to get the Versamark down into all of the openings. Then, we heat embossed with clear embossing powder. After that, we sponged Pretty in Pink and Close to Cocoa around the flower with sponge daubers. The ink does not stick to the embossed image, and wipes right off.

The background was stamped with the Vintage Vogue stamp set that's in the Occasions mini catalog. In keeping with the distressed, vintage look of the card, the images were stamped off (a technique where you ink up the stamp, stamp it onto scrap paper and then onto your project. This results in a less strong, slightly faded image). I forgot to stamp off once, so then did so again in the opposite corner so that it looked intentional. The distressed look was completed by tearing the corners and sponging around the outside of the paper with the sponge dauber. The card is finished off with half-back pearls from the Pretties Kit and a pretty soft pink button from the Sherbet designer button set. Here's a link to the original card on Shelli's blog - it's worth a peek, as there are some fun elements not included on this card.

Melissa's second card used the Sweetheart stamp set and the heart shaped treat cups. It features a "trap door" so that the treats can be removed without removing the card. As you can see from this card, this set and the heart shaped cup aren't limited to Valentine's Day. You can learn more about these items (which don't appear in a catalog) here. I used these for my Valentine's cards, and snapped extra photos along the way for a tutorial. I'll put that together soon to share with you!

Here's a picture of the trap door inside the card. Clever - my trap doors have always been part of the card front. It's nice to try them out in a different location:

I won't supply complete recipes here, as these cards are not "mine", even though I made them. I was pretty specific in the text about much of the material. If you have questions about the material or techniques used, feel free to shoot me an email or ask your question in a comment.

Check back, as I'll be belatedly sharing my Valentine cards with you, along with a tutorial on the 'trap doors'! The tutorial might take me a bit of time, but I've also got tons of samples using the Sweet Pea Paper stack and more to share!

Circumstances kept me away from my craft table and computer, and then I hit a creative dry spell which extended my absence. I have crafted a bit, and have some projects to catch you up on. I even spent some time learning a new craft, and maybe I'll share bits of that with you, too - so stay tuned!

I'll start out with some cards from a class I taught at a weekend scrapboook crop that I ran with some other Stampin' Up! demonstrators this past weekend in New Jersey. If you'd like to learn more about upcoming weekend crops in New Jersey, let me know!

Class attendees made eight cards - 2 each of 4 designs. I shared the class with another demonstrator and today I'm sharing the cards I designed for the class. The 2 cards above are basically the same card, with slight changes in the paper and flowers used. On the 1st card, I layered a Rose Red 5 Petal Flower punch behind the light pink felt flower to make it a little more substantial. The 2nd card features the "Kisses" die-cut note cards available in the Occasions Mini Catalog. These little notes are the perfect size for the Whimsical Words stamp set (Sale-A-Bration freebie!). Since these two cards are so similar, they counted as "one" of my cards - I just wanted to give everyone a variety of the Sweet Pea Stitched Felt flowers to play with.

Here's the second card of my design that we made:

This card features one of my favorite papers from the Sweet Pea Paper Stack. This great (thick) pad of paper has some amazing patterned papers. I love that there's so much paper using the same set of colors - makes for some great combinations!

The bird & sentiment are from the Sweatheart set (this is the stamp set that corresponds with the heart-shaped Sweet Treats cups and the heart punch - but it's not just for Valentine's Day!). The bird was colored with Old Olive & So Saffron markers directly on the stamp, which was then applied to the paper. The scalloped square behind the bird was made with the new Scallop Trim Corner punch from the Occasions catalog. If you start with a 2" square, you can do this entirely with the corner punch. I learned this great tip from a video on Stampin' Up!'s You Tube channel - here's a link to SU's Corner & Border Punch Video. Check it out and get busy punching!

Since I haven't been blogging for a while, everything's a bit out of date. I'll update my mini catalog links over the next few days. In the meantime, if you'd like to receive a Sale-A-Bration catalog (good thru March 31) or the Occasions catalog (thru April 30), let me know. In my next post, I'll share the other two cards from this fun class, so be sure to check back soon.

In my two previous posts (scroll down to see them), I shared some Christmas card "rejects". They're not really rejects at all - I was just playing with colors and DSP that appealed to a customer of mine. We were trying to come up with a Christmas card in which she could include a photo of her children. Once we got the color combo down, I came up with a layout for her. She did not want a traditional 'single-crease' card, but something more interesting or mechanical. She also did not want to just slip in the photo, but to incorporate it as part of the card.

What I came up with was a Gatefold card that contained a traditional card insert. Hard to explain, but I think the photos below will make it clear. I am not sharing the actual card, as that design was specifically for my customer, but I will share the layout and the color combo!

The colors were Kraft and Bordering blue, a soft, pretty, peaceful color combination.

Here's the front of the Gatefold card:

It's still a standard 5 1/2" x 4 1/4" size. I started with a 4 1/4" x 11" piece of card stock. I scored this at 2 3/4" on each side. The circle element is firmly attached to one side of the card only. The card is held closed by tucking the circle element under the smaller punched image, which is raised up on a dimensional.

When you open the card, it looks like this:

This is a 5 1/4" x 8" piece of card stock, scored & folded at 4". It's like a card within a card. Here's a view of the inside of the "inner card":

My customer used Repositionable Dotto to attach the photo to the upper portion of the card. Recipients can either remove the photo or cut the top flap from the card to retain the matted photo.

I enjoy getting together with Barb each year to plan her Christmas cards - she always challenges me (this card is WAY easier than the card I designed and she made last year!). If you need help designing a card or other kind of paper craft project, I'd be happy to help you out. Contact me for more information!

<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/StampWithLisat/~4/ePhCRRc-nVI" height="1" width="1" />

In yesterday's post, I shared some "concept" cards I made for a customer who wanted to make 130 Christmas cards. The final card had to have a way to contain a photo of her kids, but first I just made up a few 'regular' cards using color combinations and patterned paper that appealed to her.

Today I'm sharing two cards made in the winning color combination - Kraft and Bordering Blue. This is such a peaceful & soothing color combination - I really like it (and so did my customer)!

The card above is simple & elegant - a winner if you're looking for something you can turn out in a hurry. I dressed up what might otherwise be a too-plain card by crimping the bottom of the front. It adds some texture and visual interest without crowding or overwhelming the card. I've used this layout before, so it might look familiar to some of you.

This card features the new Serene Snowflakes dressed up as ornaments. I stamped Whisper White craft ink directly onto the card stock. Last year, I made a similar card with vellum layered on top of the card stock. You can see that card and get some tips for embossing on vellum in that post.

In the next day or two, I'll share the layout of the final version of the card. We found a great way to make the card more than a simple fold-over card and to showcase her photo. I won't share the final card itself (that's Barb's card!), but the layout I will share - it's fun, interesting, and not too hard to mass produce.

Rec ipe for both cards (images copyright Stampin' Up! 1990-2009):
Paper: Kraft, Bordering Blue, Very Vanilla
Ink: Basic Gray, Soft Suede
Stamps: Delightful Decorations, Serene Snowflakes, Four the Holidays
Accessories: Ornament Punch, paper crimper, silver elastic cord, Scallop Circle Punch, 1 3/8" Circle Punch, dimensionals
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/StampWithLisat/~4/0Qzx5wklaz0" height="1" width="1" />

I help her design the cards each year - we get together and take a look at the colors, patterned papers and stamps that appeal to her. Then I make up a couple of samples and we take it from there.

Although she likes cards with unique folds and always looks for a clever way to enclose a picture of her children, here are some of the 'plain' concept cards I made for her this year. They're not really rejects - just part of the process!

These samples use Kraft paper and the Christmas Cocoa paper:

That's it - 3 simple cards, each well suited for mass production! If you haven't started your cards yet, you can't get much simpler than this. They each use such a little bit of the patterned paper that your paper pack will go a long way!

No separate recipes, but I used Kraft, Real Red, Soft Suede & Whisper White card stock, Soft Suede and Real Red Ink, Christmas Cocoa DSP, Season of Joy & Dasher stamp sets, corner rounder, 3/4" circle punch, gold elastic cord, Real Red Grosgrain ribbon, Star Punch, dimensionals - think that's it! Enjoy!

A boxed set of cards always makes a thoughtful gift for your hostess. With so many parties coming up, why not whip up a few sets and be prepared? These make great hostess gifts, teacher gifts or gifts for anyone you'd like to remember with a simple gift this season.

As you can see, the cards don't need to be elaborate in order to be pretty. The Medallion stamp is perfect for making quick but elegant cards. Below is a picture of a boxed set of 6 cards and envelopes. You can find instructions to make the box and lid in this post.

I made two variations of the same card, just alternating colors. I used Bermuda Bay and Rich Razzleberry. Here's a shot of each one:

A few tips for getting a good impression from the Medallion stamp, or any large or background stamp:

1. Paper! The quality of your paper really makes a difference! The smooth surface of Stampin' Up!'s Whisper White or Very Vanilla is perfect for accepting ink without bleeding or splotching. When I first started stamping, I used what I thought was less expensive packs of white paper that I purchased at my local craft store. I couldn't understand why other people were getting much better impressions using the same stamps and the same ink as me. I realized the paper was the difference. I even did the math and realized there was little or no difference in cost per sheet.

2. Upside down!

place the stamp, rubber side up, and ink by pressing an ink pad all over it, or by using a brayer

place your paper carefully on top of the inked stamp

place a piece of paper (I use discarded printer paper) on top and gently rub your hand across the top for even coverage

3. If you don't want to go the upside-down route, your stamping surface is key! I usually use a plastic folding table as my work surface. There's a little bit of give on the surface of this table. That 'give' can lead to catching some ink from the edge of the stamp on your paper. When using a large solid stamp such as the Medallion, I head for my kitchen counters! The hard surface helps ensure a good impression. Just make sure to apply steady, even pressure.
