Camera Confidence DSLR Training at YSP

Just got back and dried off from a great visit to Yorkshire Sculpture Park. I was there putting the final touches to our Camera Confidence course, 'Confidence with your DSLR'. We are fantastically privileged to be working with YSP and for our course in October we have full access to both the indoor and outdoor exhibitions. Yorkshire Sculpture Park is just of the M1 at J38, so if you've not been before it certainly worth a visit. They have regular exhibition updates, and if you've not tried the 12 gongs, then your missing out on a feeling you won't get anywhere, except inside a grand piano (visit YSP and it all makes sense!)

I'm so excited about the course, as at last I can now begin to share some of the amazing knowledge I've amassed over the course of hundreds of national and international wedding and portrait shoots. Our DSLR course if perfect for beginners or anyone wanting to get more from their DSLR. The course is on Sunday 30th October 2011, but with more already being planned for 2012. Places are limited so book soon to avoid disappointment.

Real Weddings - Paul & Caroline at Mount Pleasant Hotel, Doncaster, South Yorkshire

Paul and Caroline's wedding day started with preparations at Mount Pleasant Hotel in Doncaster South Yorkshire. Little Caroline slides into her dream wedding dress before heading to St John's Church in South Anston Sheffield. Arriving in style and to fantastic sunshine, the wedding is under way. After LOTS of hugs and kisses the couple head back to Mount Pleasant Hotel in Doncaster to celebrate their special day.

Once at Mount Pleasant Hotel, the guest are entertained by a magician and music, complete with a glass of champagne or two. Then pop into the gardens for 15 minutes to get the groups shots done, then a few personal photographs before their wedding breakfast and speeches.

The evening starts with a great dance routine by the couple for their first dance, and the evening is finished with a great firework display, which of course was all captured on video!

Thornbridge Annual Charity Garden Party

What does a photographer do on his day off? He photographs of course, and yesterday was one of those days. The difference is yesterday it was in support of the Annual Charity Garden Party hosted by the delightful Emma & Jim at their home and ever stunning Thornbridge Hall & Gardens. This now annual event is for a great course and this year it was supporting Lainey K Foundation, Helens Trust, Macmillan Cancer Care, Boots for Africa, and the National Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline.

How could I not capture this special event, especially on such a fantastic day. So Ros and I packing up the family we headed down to Thornbridge Hall, nr Bakewell in Derbyshire. We arrived shortly before 11am, and already the field was filling up rapidly with car. After the grand tour by the ever faith full Jackie, I set off armed and ready with two camera to capture the day. Problem was, it was huge, with so much going on it was hard to know where to start. Do I visit any one of the many stall, do I taste some of ther amzing cakes, or wild boar burgers, perhaps a I could try one of the beers, brewed by Thornbridge Brewery themselves. The event was spread across and within Emma and Jim's home, as once again they open their home and gardens for the public.

As I walked around the hall and garden's I stopped to chat to some of the visitors, and everyone I spoke to, no matter how young or old, all echoed the same feeling... ..."What a great event!"

Ok, enough of me talking about the event, if you went, you'll know wht a great day it was, for those that couldn't attend, then here are just some of the pictures I captured along the way.

Don't Trash The Dress - X-Cite The Dress

Today is the day of the Royal Wedding between Prince William & Catherine Middleton, and what a stunning wedding it was. This got me to thinking about Kate's beautiful dress and the American trend of 'Trash The Dress'.

For those that have not yet come across "Trash The Dress', it it's quite as bad as it seems, though I have seem some extreme shoots. It's more about have the photographs your REALLY wanted on your wedding day, but did have the location, time or ability on the day of your wedding. Many since have copied this idea, taking some stunning photographs.

So do you think Kate might have a Trash The Dress the session? Probably not, but she might want some amazing pictures of her in her dress, and perhaps Edward would like some too. And this is how many of our brides feel. So can I encourage you to not 'Box The Dress' or even 'Trash The Dress', but instead 'X-Cite The Dress' with a shoot from Stancliffe Studios.

What exactly is an engagement photography shoot?

Sometimes also called a pre-wedding photography shoot, this is not only a photography session, its also an opportunity to spend some time with us to plan and prepare you for your wedding day. It might sound very boring, but it's far from it it's really is fun!

Both parts of the session are important to you as the excited couple planning your wedding day and to us as your chosen photographer. Planning your wedding photography, includes your wedding day schedule, what groups shots you'd like, and also getting to know who your key wedding party members are. This ensures we know all the who, what, when and where's of your wedding day. It also ensures that your photography is fully integrated into your day rather than your day having revolve around the photographer - this certainly is not our style!

Once the planning part is done, we head off around your wedding venue looking for all the best spots to capture some contemporary photographs. Along the way, we'll teach a you few things to help you relax in front of the camera and look your very best. This isn't about making you stand in awkward poses, the photographs we capture will be natural, relaxed and of course fun.

It's time for change

Over the last 6 months at Stancliffe Studios photography I've been busy clearing my decks and preparing for a year of change in 2011. As a photographer who continuously strives for better, I welcome change with open arms, so long as it's for the better, and that is exactly what I have planned...

In 2011 I will be working hard to bring you an all new portrait portfolio of options and products, even more contemporary and elegant than before. Fresh back from a recent and significant trade fair we have a list of new wall, desk and book ideas for all our clients. Bigger still we will be launching an all new website called Photography For Life, dedicated to capturing todays lifestyle images for you and your family. On the wedding front, two of our major suppliers have some fantastic new updates, so new demonstrations will be coming online over the course of the year. A sneaky update this includes some great new cover options, and at last a great matt finished paper, perfect for todays modern wedding couple. As well as the updates, which I love, I'm also very excited about an all new coffee book which is a fantastic alternative to our larger Italian and Classical wedding day photography albums.

And it doesn't stop there... The Queen's visit to Sheffield

Today was a special day for the people of Sheffield, and for me. Special as the Queen came to visit Sheffield for the first time since 1954 to officially open the SITraN (Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience) building. The unit is once of the most advanced in the world, researching such medical conditions as MND, Parkinson's, Alzheimers and Multiple Sclerosis. It was a special day for me, as I was invited to assist in the photography and videography of the Queen and Prince Philips offical visit.

Wedding and Portraits all in one day...

Wedding and baby photographs are my true specialty so I've was very fortunate I had both in one day on Sunday. After a busy Saturday at a Wedding at Tankersley Manor, Sheffield, Sunday was spent with the lovely Mrs & Mrs Kirk, to complete a wedding day photography follow-up after the couples honeymoon. Two weeks after their big day at The Ashes, Stoke-On-Trent, we sat down to review their wedding photographs (teaser set below). Unfortunately I got my usual complaint... ..there was to many great photographs to choose from.

Then my after was spent with a previous wedding couple photographing their 6 month old baby boy...

On Friday 24th September 2010 the amazing Magna centre in Rotherham, South Yorkshire played host to a wonderful night of entertainment.

This now yearly special event started by Darren & Gail of JB Doors, is in support of two wonderful charities, Western Park Hospital Cancer Charity and PACT (Parents’ Association of Children with Tumours and Leukaemia). This year Darren and Gail out-did themselves once again and gave the 650 attendees an amazing evening of food, entertainment and an opportunity to buy some great items such as signed football shirts, F1 Driving Day, private plane to France, and so much more.

The evening's total has yet be finalised, but it's anticipated that the evening will have raised over £30,000 for the two charities, with Stancliffe Studios donating £1,000 through the sale of prints, and framed prints during the course of the evening.

Facebook - The final fix...

Facebook is both a fantastic way of staying in touch with your friends and family, but also a very powerful business tool. Over the past 18 months Facebook has made several updates to the way it works and how this benefits people personally and as a business. As a business owner of Stancliffe Studios, obviously I want to utilise facebook to keep in touch with my fans, but that is getting mixed-up with how I use facebook in my personal life. I have therefore decided to make a clear distinction between how I use facebook in each instance, and to such end I have created a whole new personal profile for my friends and family, and this will remain detached from my business pages.

For the vast majority of my fans this will have no real impact other than a positive one, as I can now utilise Facebook and our business page to their maximum use and keep everyone up to date on what we are doing, our latest work, and updates of new products and services!

On a personal level, unfortunately this means my friends and family have the little job of reconnecting to me via my new facebook page.

I'm back and straight into my first photographic assignment 'Friends Together'

Well after a two weeks break, I'm back, refreshed and ready to go, which was a good job. Having only landed back in the UK at noon, I was thrown straight back into the fun with a shoot at 4pm for 'Friends Together'.

The assignment was to capture some new publicity photographs of the family and children who depend on this special group for help. Friends Together are a local based group funded by Nottinghamshire Children's Fund, offering services for families of children and young people with additional needs.

Overall, I have to admit it was a great two hours, made only better by meeting the team who work so hard to help these families, making their lives that little bit easy, and a lot more fun. If you would like more information about the group, please contact Dianne Edwards on 01777-274463 Ext 4464.

Holiday time!

Well the last 24 hours have certainly been manic, in fact the last two weeks, hence the lack of posts! Well I'm writing this blog as I sit on a plane on my way to a quick break in Turkey before the summer wedding photography season really kicks up another gear.

The last few weeks whilst busy playing catch-up have certainly been an enjoyable time. I've had the fantastic pleasure of photographing a wedding at the Palm House in Sefton Park, Liverpool, another wedding in Hull and another at the Priest House Hotel, Castle Donnington in Derbyshire. We've captured some wonderful and important memories along the way with one couple playing giant connect four, another singing with Elvis (what friends do after a glass of champagne), sunset pictures by the river side and of course all those moments of happiness as they exchange promises to each other and laugher at the grooms expense during the best mans speech... ...and many many more.

In the last 24 hours in preperations for my quick getaway I've sent one album to Italy for production, checked on the progress of three others, and sent a further two coffee books to Amsterdam for reproduction. I've then processed two family photography shoots taken on-location at Harewood House and a park near our studios in Sheffield.

For one of the lifestyle/on-location family shoots we've created a stunning deep wood framed panoramic of the little boys eating ice-creams and for other family they choosen one of our stunning and vibrant contemporary acrylics.

So all in all a wonderful time has been had by all. Whilst I might be tired the huge hug I received from the bride as I left them at midnight last weekend summed up how important my job is; and a pleasureable one to boot!

We been very conscious that our wedding gallery / portfolio is little out of date, so we now updated this 135 new wedding day photographs showing a wide range of the images we cover. Our portfolio now includes photographs including, the wedding preparations, civil and church ceremonies, kids, confetti throwing, the first dance, having fun with the groups, cutting of the cake, and some stunning couples photographs, with a few extra special photographs taken at night outside...

Oh and if that wasn't enough, we've also added more of those all important detail shots of the dress, shoes, flowers, cuff links and more. Then to finish, we added some addition photos taken during the speeches, and look out for the groom with his head in hands.

Secret Sessions - Party hard with Richard and the gang...

As a photography I always like to have the gauntlet thrown down now and then, and last Saturday night was certainly one of those photographic challenges I couldn't say no too. Despite photographing a wedding all day, I left the happy couple at midnight and headed into town. Arriving at Aroma on London Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire for a private dance function organised by Richard and the gang (see www.steeltownvip.com for more information). I have to admit I really didn't know what to expect...

As if photographing in a dance club wasn't hard enough, when i get there I find out the lighting rigs hadn't arrived due to a problem, so I was photographing in the dark!!

So here is a small selection of photographs taken on the night, or should I say early hours of Saturday morning.

On Monday I was at the annual UK photography trade show, where many of the worlds leading suppliers show-off their new products and services. I usually walk away from such a full day of scrutinising product after product feeling tired yet still looking forward to working with new suppliers. This year I almost bounced out of the doors feeling highly excited by what I had seen and discussed, to the point I couldn't sleep on Monday night! It's now midnight on Tuesday and I'm still thinking of all the fantastic photographic products, and already we have plans for several new lines...

For our portrait photography line-up we will be introducing:

Some all new framing ranges and sizes
Some fantastic contemporary canvas options
An extension to our acrylic range with some more modern presentation ideas
We are also seeking to introduce a whole new coffee table book range for our portrait sessions.

For our wedding photography line-up we have even more:

A brand new contemporary album range which is absolutely stunning!
Some updates to our traditional or overlay album range
Further updates on our album design options...but don't worry all designs will remain in house and exclusively by me...
more framing options (as part of our portrait range as well)
And last but not least we are also hoping to extend our wedding stationary options

So without doubt I've got a lot of work to do to review, test, sample and bring fully online all of these great products and services, but wow am I looking forward to it.

Recently I've been feeling a little low having not been able to lift a camera for over 6 weeks since a my little accident on the slopes, Today however that changed and I was once again reminded why all this pain is worth it. Today I received a card from a client and inside it read....

Our Referral Rewards Scheme is live!

Referral rewards for you and your friends

As you may or may not know, almost all of my advertising is done by word of mouth, and there is no greater compliment than to see our clients again. Second to that is a referral to their friends and family...

In order to keep prices down, I do not spend a fortune on advertising our wedding and portrait photography services. Instead, I would rather reward my clients for spreading my name around. So as a gift, I am offering a Referral Rewards program.

What do I get for a Wedding Referral?
For every wedding referral we offer a reward of £30 cash or double-up to £60 of photography gift vouchers.
For the referred couple, they get either a free Bridal Boudoir or Cherish Your Dress shoot, or £50 off any signed mount or photography guest book.

What do I get for a Portrait Referral?
For every portrait referral we offer a reward of £15 cash or double-up to £30 of photography gift vouchers.
For the referred individual, couple or family, they get 25% off any shoot of their choice, and a further £20 off the total value of all products purchased as result of that shoot.

What do I get for any other referrals?
As a photographer I’ve covered a wide range of other photographic services over the years, from commercial, PR, events and much more. I’m happy to offer a referral reward for any business I receive, but the total value of the reward will be dependent upon the specific referral. Please contact us at the studio for more information.

Do I get a reward as a returning client?
Whilst we do not offer a referral reward to someone referring themselves, we do offer a discount to returning clients. All returning clients receive a 50% discount on portrait shoots, and a further 5% on all products purchased as result of that shoot.

Can I transfer my gift vouchers to a friend or family member?
Yes, of course you can. In fact you might even decide to give the vouchers to a friend or family member as a photography gift. Please note that all photography gift vouchers have a limited life.

Is there a limit to the number of referrals I can send you?
Limit? Of course not, in fact I’d positively encourage you to refer more clients... ...I love giving vouchers to everyone.

Can my gift vouchers be combined with other discount and reward programs?
As a general rule, I’m afraid not. We will however try to be as fair as we can, so please contact us at the studio to discuss your specific scenario.

Now for the boring bit... ...The Referral Reward Terms

A successfully generated lead is defined as a fully referred prospect who becomes an invoiced client of Stancliffe Studios.
Stancliffe Studios shall be in receipt of client funds before releasing referral fees to an associated registered referrer.
Any referral fees shall be made in UK Pounds Sterling within 14 days of the referred client paying their invoice in full.
Referral fees shall be paid by cheque, PayPal, or gift vouchers dependent upon option selected.
You can not claim fees on a referral when you are the client or immediate family of the client.
Any customer that you refer cannot be a previous customer of Stancliffe Studios or any subsidiaries.
Whilst we will endeavor to make contact with you to inform you of the status of a lead, it is your responsibility to maintain contact with us.

As a wedding and portrait photography, the idea of sharing your photographs via video can sometime feel a little... well... strange. So it's with a little bit of intrepidation I've released my first youTube video. I hope you enjoy this montage of photographs taken at Clumber Park Hotel and the surrounding venues and National Trust Park.
