A Sweet Surprise

This little guy decided to come a lot earlier than expected, in fact we didn't even get the chance to have the maternity session done, before his arrival! He was anxious to meet his parents, so after a few weeks in the hospital, a tiny baby boy made his way home. And I was given the opportunity to photograph his first photo session. And how wonderful he was! He slept the entire time, and I couldn't have asked for a better session. Thank you little Blake!

Engaged!

This couple were the winners of our giveaway at the Yates Bridal Show this year. Congratulations to the two of them!
They were newly engaged as of December, and were a lot of fun to photograph. They had a great way with each other and you can tell they are completely in love and excited for their upcoming wedding. I wish them all the best as they start their new life together!

2011 Brooks Bridal Show

I had a great opportunity to attend the Brooks Bridal show again this year. It was put together wonderfully with one of the hosts being my Aunt Barb who runs the Douglas Country Inn located in Brooks. They had displays set up with everything from flowers and cakes, to photography, makeup and even hair extensions. There was a fashion show done by McBride & Groom in Lethbridge, displaying some of their fabulous designs. Bride in Bloom, located in Brooks, also did a magnificent job on the flowers. Here are some of the captures from the day. And also a great job done by our models in the show.

Little Red Coat

I received this little red coat from my neighbour and friend, Sarah, after her daughter had outgrown it. When I put it on Aleeah for the first time, I totally fell in love with how cute she looked.

And I've been waiting for some decent weather to capture what I didn't want to forget, my youngest little girl and her little red coat. She insists on wearing the matching hat every time we go out. So here is the time we spent together one morning and some of the captures. My way of keeping her little.

Baby Month

January is the month for babies! Here's a few sneek peeks of what January brought. What sweethearts!

Baby Austin was little restless in the beginning, but then once he was asleep really let us get some good shots in. Thanks Austin :) Here's what I was able to edit so far from this session.

This little man is definitely doing some growing. At 9 months, he's very active and well on his way to walking. We were kept on our toes, but he did fabulously...thanks little B.

Well I'm now officially back to regular blogging. December and January have thrown me off a bit, but I've got some new posts coming each week. I'm super excited for 2011. So here's a little peek of what I've been up to (besides my painting projects of course....more on that later)

This first family picture is of a close friend that I've known since Kindergarten. I was so excited to have been asked to do pictures of her family. They seriously have the cutest kids! But unfortunately the weather was very cold that day, and not just cold...but the good old Alberta north wind cold. So we just got a few shots in between warming up in the vehicle. I still couldn't believe the kids were as happy as they were. They were so good!!

This next picture is of a 9 mth old little boy that I've been photographing now since he's been born. And it's so amazing to see his different stages. I cannot believe he's almost a year old!!

I always LOVE starting off a new year. It feels like a fresh start, new goals and ideas to accomplish, and then getting to look back on what the previous year brought and how to make the next one even better. So with that said, HAPPY 2011 to everyone! Start it off right, and set 2 goals you will definitely try to commit too....and stick with. Big or small, that's my challenge to you. And I absolutely would love to hear some of your thoughts and goals for this year.

I wanted to say THANK YOU to everyone for their support and business in 2010... and

to my faithful blog followers!!

It has been a great year and has kept me busy, but I have been given such great opportunities to have some unforgettable experiences! I love what I do, busy or not, and feel blessed to be able to take what I love doing and turn it into a business. And I could not have done it without the help of my wonderful clients and all their referrals.

I'm very excited to head into 2011!! There will be some new changes taking place in the studio as well as some new products coming out. Plus some new features added to the both the website and blog. This should be a great year!

Merry Christmas to you and your families this holiday season, and I look forward to seeing you in the new year!!

I know I've been somewhat neglectful lately on my blog posting. So to those who have faithfully checked it out lately to find nothing new...sorry. New posts are on the way. I've been caught off guard in the last few weeks with requests for winter portraits, plus lots christmas gift prints!

And don't get me wrong, I LOVE shooting winter pictures. Everything is so clean and crisp looking, and colors really stand out :) But I must honestly say, that I thought I was one of few who liked pictures in the cold winter outdoors. But turns out i've had clients with some same ideas! Which was great :) And a few adventures along the way to keep it interesting.....falling through snow that was deeper than anticipated, getting stuck in parking lots or pushing out others that are stuck, stares from Christmas shoppers as we take on bookstores and coffeshops for some creative engagement portraits, plus lots of baby bumps this month!

Photography Tip Monday:

Have you ever noticed that your shots sometimes have a cool, clammy feel to them? If so, you're not alone...
The default white balance setting for most digital cameras is auto, which is fine for most snapshots, but tends to be a bit on the "cool" side. When shooting outdoor portraits and sunny landscapes, try changing your white balance setting from auto to cloudy. That's right, cloudy. Why? This adjustment is like putting a mild warming filter on your camera. It increases the reds and yellows resulting in richer, warmer pictures.

Take candid pictures
Ignore the impulse to force your subjects to always pose staring at the camera. Variety is important. Take candid pictures to show them working, playing, leaning against a banister chatting, or relaxing.

A wedding in Picture Butte...and then Destination Jamaica!

It's up....the awaited sneek peek from the most recent Wedding/Jamaica Trip. Ryan & Amanda had their wedding in Picture Butte the day before their trip, and minus the wind...it turned out to be a fantastic day for November. And a thanks to Shannon again, for adding her creative style to the day and helping out!

I had a chance to meet some of the family, shoot some formals and the reception, and then the next day off to Jamaica to finish off the rest of their pictures. We didn't really know any of the group that well (other than from the day before), but both Jeff and I couldn't have asked for a better group to go with. They were all so fun, outgoing and so easy to get along with. Thanks again to Ryan & Amanda for allowing me to share in the day with the both of you. And to those that were in Jamaica... it was so nice getting to know all of you, and what fun we had!

Photo Tip of the Week:

Try using natural light! You may be surprised to learn that cloudy, overcast days provide the best lighting for pictures of people. Bright sun makes people squint, and it throws harsh shadows on their faces. On overcast days, the soft light flatters faces. Indoors, try turning off the flash and use the light coming in from a window to give your subject a soft, almost glowing appearance.

Photography Tip Mondays

I know...today is actually Tuesday, but I didn't have a chance last night to put up a blog post. But every Monday, I thought it would be fun to post little tips and tricks to help make better pictures. And you don't even need a big fancy camera. Mondays photo tips are aimed to help those with any type of camera...big or small. And don't forget to post your comments, I would love to hear from you. Happy Picture Taking!

Photo Tip Monday:
Eye-to-eye contact is as engaging in a picture as in real life. So try sitting on the ground and snapping some photos from the child's perspective. Expressions will look more natural, your flash photos will be more evenly lit from nose to toe, and the background will probably look a lot better, too. This also works great for pets!

Love this Time!

This year has been a bit crazy for weddings, and has kept me pretty busy. But one thing I've noticed is that you need to have fun and take the time to enjoy each other on your wedding day.

The little things may seem to matter at the time, but ultimately you will not remember that as much as the time spent with each other. And I can say for sure, that when you're having pictures done, one thing you need to try and do, is have some moments where your entire focus is on the one you just married. Just try to forget everyone and everything around you for just a few seconds, and you will be amazed at the pictures that come from it. This time will turn out to be an image that describes exactly how you felt on that special day, and will bring back those feelings everytime you look at it. Love this time!!

Take a little look at the wedding from last Saturday. This couple was so great to work with! And the groom made it hard for me to sometimes have a steady hand from laughing. They both had such a great sense of humor. Congratulations to the two of them and starting their new life together!

Wow, we've been lucky lately with some great weather for photos, even the wind seems to be co-operating. This month has turned out great for the family and portrait sessions we have done! Here's a little peek at the most recent ones.

I've also had clients wondering lately what to do with all their images once they have them. Most people want a way to display a lot of images as it's sometimes hard to choose just one. So here's an idea to capture a whole family....plus their spouses and kids too. This can be printed in a 20x20 size, and helps to display everyone in one picture without it looking too crowded. Love These Baby Ages!

How fast babies grow and change! The first year is such a treasure to enjoy. It seems I just barely did this little guys newborn photos, and now he's 6 months old, and such a cute little man at that. The first year goes by quickly and before you know it they're toddlers! We actually first tried the session in the studio, but realized quickly that it just wasn't going to work....it's hard to have smiles when you're so tired. But I was able to get one picture that I really love, and can't help but to post.

And then a few days later we tried again, but this time, in his own backyard. This worked out great because we were even able to get their big dog in the picture, and they absolutely adore each other. Who says you always need a fancy park... pictures sometimes turn out best right in your own backyard ;) Take a look

I also had the chance to photograph a little 3 month old girl the same week, and you foget so quickly that in the first 3 months that they have already developed their own little personalities. From smiles & giggles to that inquisitive look they give when seeing something for the first time...such moments to rememeber. This little lady didn't have a lot of giggles that day for us, but what a sweetheart she was with her different expressions. Enjoy the little sneek peek, she's a doll.

Autumn Wedding

I think that Fall weddings may be my new favorite time of year for wedding photos. There were some gorgeous colors in the flower choices and also in the wedding party and the orange complimented the changing leaves and warm lighting....a sure sign that Fall had arrived.  It was so great working with these two; a couple that compliments each other perfectly in every way. And what's a Lethbridge wedding without a little wind... well we just worked with it, and lucky enough the wind had only started near the end.

Congratulations to the both of them and starting their new life together. And thank you for letting me share the day, and also having a few good laughs during photos ;)    .....which is what its all about, enjoying the day!

A perfect Autumn Day....
