Exercising access in fitness refurb

A Stannah Midilift XLplus platform lift is exercising access for people of all mobility levels to first-class fitness facilities in Highgrove Pool & Fitness Centre, a recently refurbished leisure complex in Ruislip, Middlesex.

Operating between three floors, the Midilift XLplus brings access to facilities including the pool level and top gym spectators level. Other amenities within the complex include steam and sauna rooms, dance studio, high-tech gym and aerobiking studio.

Supplied in a self-supporting structure, the Midilift XLplus is quick and easy to install. It looks and performs like a traditional passenger lift but at reduced running costs, which supports the energy conservation measures installed by Hillingdon Council.

At ground level the Midilift XLplus is located in the extended and improved front entrance and reception area. The light, spacious refurbishment is complemented by fully glazed, panoramic landing doors at all levels, and two half-height mirrors to the car interior. On the upper levels, the rear wall is also fully glazed. On entering the upper levels, the lift car travels within a dedicated external structure to the front elevation of the building which is visible from the car park. Four glass panels to the front of this structure allow natural light to enter the lift, which both showcases the lift and makes the journey a scenic experience.

Hydraulically driven at a speed of 0.15m/s over a distance of 7670mm, the Midilift XLplus carries rated loads up to 400kg. Safety features include a light-grey studded floor, edge entrance protection, audio-visual notification of floor level and travel direction, emergency lowering and alarm via a back-up battery, overload indicator, key switch to isolate the lift at the main floor, and an intercom system.

Operation is via one-touch call stations at the landings, with automatic button controls inside the lift car. A two-tone chime at each landing alerts the passenger on the lift’s arrival at the desired level.

The Midlift XLplus was specified by architect, Dominic Cole, of award-winning London architects, Studio E: “This demanding refurbishment called for a cost-effective, easily installed people-moving solution which was fulfilled perfectly by Stannah’s Midlift XLplus lift system. It does not require a pit or motor room yet delivers all the benefits of a standard passenger lift. We have used Stannah lift products before and, especially for design and build contracts, we prefer to use a respected, well-established name in the lift industry.”

The Midilift XLplus is Part M (England & Wales) and Section 4.2 (Scotland) compliant; meets the requirements of the Equality Act 2010; and is serviced by the London & South East branch of Stannah Lift Services, part of a nationwide network providing 24 hour, 365 days a year support.

Bridging the gap

How Stannah lifts are central to the spectacular new station in Reading

The much-anticipated regeneration of Reading railway station features 14 Stannah bespoke lifts to ensure the easy movement of people and goods to every platform of this multi-million structure.

In summer 2012 a huge new passenger bridge, which was constructed alongside the station, was slid into position across the existing tracks. The new station concourse, which opened at Easter 2013, was cleverly created on this gigantic bridge that provides access to every part of the station.

On entering the station from the north side there are two 20-person (1500kg) passenger/goods lifts providing travel to the elevated bridge area. A third matching lift travelling three stops, with a capacity of 20 persons (1500kg), is for staff use only and is operated by a swipe card system. At bridge level these lifts appear as a triplex, adjacent to the escalators.

The bridge features a series of five central lift shafts running right across the concourse, each plinth housing two lifts; one for passenger use and a second that can be used by staff with goods too. The five 2-stop 16 person (1200kg) passenger lifts travel 12.7 metres to the platforms below. The five 2-stop 20-person (1500kg) staff/goods lifts travel 12.7 metres to and from service areas.

An additional four 4-stop 16-person lift for staff use only sits in the corner of the bridge back of house for office staff.

All the lifts are hydraulically driven and all fourteen motor rooms are housed on the entry level of the station on both the north and south sides of the station.

Stannah engineers worked round the clock during an intense three-month period when ten lifts were installed simultaneously to meet deadlines for their clients, Principal Contractor Costain/Hochtief and Network Rail.

Mark Jarratt, Project Manager for Stannah comments:

“Working on the emerging new building, immediately adjacent to the existing and fully functioning station, was extremely demanding. The logistics and time constraints around the lift installations meant our efforts were 24/7 to meet the deadlines and open the new station to the public. The fully accessible station is on an impressive scale and our lifts are literally central to the day to day life of Reading Station.”

All the Stannah lifting equipment at Reading is supplied with guarantees and will be maintained by the Brackley branch of Stannah Lift Services, covering South Midlands and Home Counties as part of the nationwide service and maintenance contract with Network Rail.

FIVE IN A ROW!

Stannah celebrates 5th Gold RoSPA Award

The Stannah Lifts Group of Companies, based in Andover, Hampshire and at eleven locations across the UK, has had its approach to the prevention of accidents and ill health recognised in the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2013 for the 5th consecutive year.

The Gold award was presented to Debbie Lee who accepted it on behalf of the Stannah team at a ceremony at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole Hotel, at the National Exhibition Centre, on Tuesday, May 14th, 2013.

Dating back to 1956, the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards scheme is the largest and longest-running programme of its kind in the UK. It recognises commitment to accident and ill health prevention and is open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes from across the UK and overseas. The scheme does not just look at accident records, but also entrants’ overarching health and safety management systems, including important practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.

David Rawlins, awards manager at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), a safety charity with a 95-year history, said: “The RoSPA Awards programme provides well-deserved recognition for the winners and spurs on other organisations to raise their standards of accident and ill health prevention. We congratulate Stannah Lifts Group of Companies on its success and encourage it, and all our other winners, to remain committed to safety and health, an approach that is well recognised to be good for workers and the bottom line.”

Jon Stannah, Managing Director, said:

“Health and safety is a constant priority in our business. The well-being and safety of our staff, our customers and our lift users is paramount to our organisation. We are delighted to have been recognised for a fifth consecutive year in the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2013 and congratulate our dedicated health and safety team on their excellent work. I am delighted that Debbie Lee and Glen Peters will be receiving the award on behalf of their whole team.”

The majority of RoSPA’s awards are non-competitive, marking achievement at merit, bronze, silver and gold levels. Organisations maintaining high standards can win gold medals, president’s awards and orders of distinction.

Competitive awards are presented in more than 20 sectors, and specialist awards recognise excellence in specific areas, such as the management of occupational road risk.

The headline sponsor for the RoSPA Awards 2013 is NEBOSH (the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health).

Three days of award ceremonies and three gala evening dinners were held in Birmingham from May 14-16, alongside Safety and Health Expo 2013, which is Europe’s leading annual health and safety exhibition. An award ceremony and gala dinner will also take place in Glasgow on September 20. See www.rospa.com/awards/ for more information about the RoSPA Occupational Health and Safety Awards.

With a little help from your friends ...

A group of Andover adults with learning disabilities are celebrating the relocation of their work based activities into a brand new industrial unit, made possible by local company Stannah.

The official opening of the premises was marked with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque by Sir George Young. He was joined by representatives from Adsema, Hampshire County Council and Stannah on 28th May 2013 at 12 noon at Unit 5, Anton Business Park.

HCC Andover Day Services in East Portway supports adults with learning disabilities within the Andover community. As part of the Day Service activities the Service offered people an opportunity to have an experience of work under the banner of ADSEMA. ( Andover Day Service Electronic& Mechanical Assemblies)

Currently Hampshire County Council is transforming services for people with learning disabilities which has presented an ideal opportunity for ADSEMA to look at new ways of developing and modernising their service including a move into their own premises, away from the traditional large building based day.

Stannah are one of ADSEMA’s clients and have always valued the local partnership. On hearing of ADSEMA’s situation they proposed a new site that will help the ADSEMA team continue their good work.

ADSEMA’s move into the unit on Anton Mill Industrial Estate is part of a next step towards a community-based enterprise - with a little help (and sponsorship) from their friends at Stannah - and continued support from Hampshire County Council.

Gill Duncan, Director of Adult Services for Hampshire County Council said:

‘ADSEMA has been part of our activities since the early 1990s but changes to the way we offer services to people have required us to make sweeping changes. Over the years our service users at the day centre have carried out a range of light industrial work for several local companies on quite a casual basis. To move forward we want to set ourselves up as a more formal enterprise.

“With Stannah’s help we are now looking forward to a new beginning with exciting plans to extend our services to the community whilst retaining the work based activities. Stannah staff have completely fitted out the unit so it says a huge ‘welcome’ to a group of people who can find change difficult. We are delighted with the new facility and are very appreciative of the support and generosity of the Stannah Group.”

Steve Burberry from Adsema was delighted to welcome everyone to witness the fruition of everyone’s hard work and was delighted to hand over to two Adsema members to add their thanks to everyone involved.

Sir George Young praised the project saying it really is a shining example of what can be achieved if a community come together to support each other. He thanked Jon Stannah for his vision in enabling the project and releasing his staff to make the transformation possible.

Everyone enjoyed a tour of the unit and a celebration lunch together with a chance to chat to some of the Adsema service users who have adapted to their new home so well.

ADSEMA will exist to:

Create real jobs for people with learning disabilities and others

Offer practical training that will lead to other work roles

Continue to provide meaningful work based activities to people who cannot progress beyond ADSEMA

Extend their work to include desk top publishing, administration, reception work

Continue to provide a safe, secure environment with support and opportunities

Gary Kinghorn and Lee Ness from Stannah have overseen the change of use at the unit and are delighted to see how well the group have settle in.

Gary comments:

“Working with ADSEMA has always been rewarding and we’re really looking forward to helping the group grow into their new home. The interior fit-out has been purpose-built to suit everyone’s needs, maximise productivity and, of course, to be safe and secure. We wish ADSEMA every success in their new venture.”

Interacting in The Crystal

Two Stannah lift products are helping visitors to The Crystal appreciate a vision of urban sustainability. Located in London’s Victoria Dock, this state-of-the-art building is hosting Our Urban Future – the world’s largest exhibition on the future of sustainable cities – as well as a dedicated Centre of Competence for Cities (COC).

Futuristic in every sense, The Crystal is a £30-million initiative from global engineering and electronics conglomerate, Siemens. One of the world’s greenest buildings, which is aiming for exemplary BREEAM and LEED accreditation, it provides an interactive exhibition hall, office space for around 60 employees, a 270-seat auditorium, shop, restaurant and café facilities.

Taking centre stage in the exhibition hall, the Midilift XLplus interacts between ground and mezzanine levels within the City Icon. This is a 6-metre-tall, generative artwork comprising an LED ‘city grid’ screen visualising the major themes of the exhibition. It was designed by creative technology consultancy, Hirsch and Mann, in collaboration with ‘creators of compelling branded content’, Squint Opera – the visionaries behind the entire interactivity suite.

Supplied in a self-supporting structure making it quick and easy to install (no need for a load-bearing lift shaft, lifting beam or pit), the Midilift XLplus was the ideal solution for the City Icon feature – a self-supporting structure itself! At the upper level, a bridge links both structures, the lift and its users to further interactive features.

Looking and behaving like a conventional passenger lift but at reduced running costs, the Midilift XLplus also complements the focus on sustainability.

Traction-driven at a speed of 0.15m/s over a distance of 3570mm, the Midilift XLplus carries rated loads up to 400kg. Its many standard features include a 900mm clear opening at each entrance for optimum manoeuvrability, panoramic glazed landing doors for light-filled travel, two-tone arrival chime at each landing, surface-mounted call station with LED display and push-button control.

The 250kg Trolleylift is a floor-level service lift designed to protect staff by minimising manual handling. Located on the ground floor, it moves refreshments on trolleys at a speed of 0.17m/s between the kitchen and the 1st-floor seminar rooms.

Supplied in a structure-supported enclosure it took just 2-3 days to install and comprises a robust, easy-clean, single-entry stainless steel lift car complemented by left-hand hinged doors fitted with safety locks. A collapsible gate protects goods from falling out of the lift car whilst in motion.

The Trolleylift also features fully automatic push button control with call and send facilities at each landing entrance, ‘lift arrival’, ‘lift occupied’ and ‘lift position’ indicators at each entrance, and an audible lift arrival buzzer.

The motor is mounted at the top of the lift structure and drives a high quality reduction gearbox fitted with a traction vee-sheave. An electro-magnetic disc brake is supplied, with emergency release mechanism. The reliable controller and counter-balance drive system ensure electrical consumption is minimal.

Silke Thomson-Pottebohm, PR Manager for The Crystal, comments: “Since opening in September 2012, The Crystal has been inundated with visitors drawn to its interactive sustainability exhibition, enlightening events and thought-leadership conferences. The Stannah Midilift XLplus and 250kg Trolleylift help navigate and service our facilities, supporting our vision to educate everyone about the technologies and solutions that can help to improve urban life and sustainability.”

A full range of optional features and finishes is available for both lift products which also meet the requirements of all relevant standards. They are also serviced by the London & the South East (Dartford) branch of Stannah Lift Services, part of a nationwide network providing 24 hour, 365 days a year support.

Access is looking up in Specsavers!

A Stannah Midilift SL platform lift is improving access in the Fareham branch of Specsavers. This is the latest Stannah installation for Specsavers, with other models from the Midilift range hard at work in their Southampton, Aberdeen, Eastleigh and Exeter branches.

Located in the main shopping area, this busy town centre outlet needed medium-rise access over two floors for people who cannot use the stairs, from parents with pushchairs to bag-laden shoppers and wheelchair-users.

The Midilift SL proved the ideal solution. Supplied in a self-supporting structure, it is quick and easy to install, and looks and performs much like a traditional passenger lift but at reduced running costs.

Hydraulically-driven at a speed of 0.15m/s over a distance of 3645mm, the Midilift SL can carry rated loads up to 400kg. The landing door is fully glazed at both levels. At ground level, the shop-facing side panel is also fully glazed, complemented by glazed panels to the top. This not only maximises light into the lift itself but contributes to the store’s light, spacious aesthetic.

Safety features include non-slip flooring, edge entrance protection,audio-visual notification of floor level and travel direction, emergency lowering and alarm via a back-up battery, overload indicator, key switch to isolate the lift at the main floor, and an intercom system.

A 900mm clear opening at each entrance eases access, as does the 1100mm x 1400mm platform which is the largest size option and maximises freedom of movement.

Operation is via one-touch call stations at the landings, with constant-pressure button controls inside the lift car.
A mammoth task ahead at Birmingham New Street

The Stannah Escalator and Moving Walkway team are a crucial element of the mammoth regeneration project centred around Birmingham New Street Station.

36 Stannah escalators will be vital to the flow of human traffic in this spectacular project. Installation is well underway with the project stretching well into 2014 before completion.

The project partnership of Network Rail, Birmingham City Council, Advantage West Midlands, Centro and the Department for Transport with Mace as principal contractor, will turn Birmingham New Street into a 21st century hub for the entire region, with capacity to handle up to 250,000 passengers each day.

Over 140,000 passengers currently use New Street every day. That's double the amount it was designed for when it was rebuilt in 1967. The station will remain fully operational throughout construction and minimising disruption to rail passengers and shoppers and enabling operators to maintain uninterrupted train services is the first priority on site.

The new world-class station for Birmingham will provide:

Room for even more passengers to use the station in comfort

More accessible, brighter and clearer platforms, reached by new escalators and new public lifts

A grand concourse three and a half times bigger than at present and enclosed by a giant, light-filled atrium

A stunning new station facade, adding to Birmingham's growing reputation for good design

Eight pedestrian entrances including a new 24hr walkway to improve access to and through the station

The stimulus for the physical regeneration of the areas surrounding the station leading to the potential creation of over 10,000 new jobs

The Stannah team are working round the clock. Crucial deliveries of escalator units all happen in the night to minimise traffic congestion and allow the safe movement of each section into place while the site is relatively quiet.

This is just the beginning…

Housed in the 19th-century Corn Exchange, the venue is named after John Peel, the legendary English disk jockey, radio presenter and journalist. It is now a community hotspot of eclectic and non-elitist cultural activities and events, with the Midilift XLplus supporting its goal ‘to see more members of the community able to participate in and enjoy the benefits of pursuing their own artistic endeavours and supporting the efforts of others’.

Our range of cabin platform lifts has just got bigger

Stannah adds to their family of platform lifts

Providing solutions for access in the built environment is our business. We introduced our first cabin platform lift in 2009 and have since installed more than 100 cabin platform lifts. Today we have broadened our range to manufacture a cabin platform lift that uses a hydraulic drive as an ideal, cost-effective choice for low-rise situations.

Our NEW Stannah Midilift SLplus is a top-of-the-range version of our original hydraulically driven part-enclosed Midilift SL, but with the addition of a full height cabin. We haven’t lost any of the platform space as light rays and safety beams, around the entrance, protect the traveller without restricting the floor area.

It’s easy to install in its own structure, needs a very minimal pit of 70mm for level entry or can be supplied with a ramp and requires headroom of just 2500mm. The lift’s drive system is neatly tucked away in a small cabinet that needs very little space. Of course, our new platform lift complies with all the latest manufacturing and safety standards and is available directly from our manufacturing base in the UK.

The best bit?

The NEW Stannah Midilift SLplus looks and operates just like a conventional passenger lift giving your building fabulous looks without breaking the budget.

Welcome to our extended family of platform lifts.

‘Goods Lifts - Your Questions Answered’ is our new information booklet designed to act as a guide to identifying your need, evaluating the potential loads and frequency of travel and answering all those questions that inevitably arise when considering a goods or service lift.

If you are responsible for moving goods then you may have considered investing in a lift to improve operations, cut costs and protect your staff from injuries caused by manual handling. At Stannah we aim to provide our customers with products fit for purpose, but understanding what best suits your needs can be confusing. Our easy-reference downloadable advisory booklet should prove an invaluable reference for all goods lifts related considerations. The new publication contains advice on current Lift Regulations and Standards, clarifying your responsibilities and those of your lift provider.

With thousands of dumbwaiter service lifts and larger goods lifts installed and relied on right across the UK we know that lifts are vital to business efficiency. To keep our (and other manufacturers) lifts in tip-top condition we have more than 350 Stannah lift engineers nationwide, who are asked questions every day.
