October 24th Connecticut Gathering – when we issued an invitation seeking hosts for Stanner gatherings in various parts of the country, George Seeberger ‘78 and his wife Lissa offered to host a cocktail party in their home in Wilton, CT. The “Gathering” will be from 4 – 6 p.m. Molloy’s President John Sherry ’61, and Alumni Director Charlie Flood ’68, will bring some traveling Stanner memorabilia and if this is like every other Stanner gathering, there will be tall tales about obscure events that may or may not have taken place in Briarwood… and some genuine memories shared as well.

If you would like to attend this Gathering, please let Nancy Catalanotto know in the Alumni Office by Friday, October 16th at 718-943-3150 or by sending an e-mail note to her at ncatalanotto@molloyhs.org .

The night will begin with our annual Mass of Remembrance at 5:30 p.m. This will take place in the DiChiaro Theater. Mass will be followed by the induction of six new members into the Stanner Hall of Fame and the presentation of one Stanner Achievement Award. Class Medallions for the 50th and 25th Anniversary classes will be presented followed by a cocktail hour and dinner dance.

Registration is open online for this event.

From the Office of Development

In the coming weeks and months we will set aside some space in the Stanner E-News to present the many ways we, as an Alumni Association, support the school. As we all know, tuition covers only part of the expense of running a school this large. The annual fund – The Fund for Molloy, the Stanners for Life Capital and Endowment Campaign and a variety of named Scholarship programs help to offset the costs associated with a private school education. Our alumni have always been supportive of these efforts, and even in these challenging economic times, we have maintained our support for Molloy.

In the next few weeks, the Fund for Molloy mailing will be coming to your homes. This is part of our annual fund drive with the proceeds going to support the operational costs associated with maintaining the Stanner Alumni Association, its communication programs and events. We will follow this effort with calls from students during the Phone-a-thon campaign. Our student volunteers look forward to this program each year and to connecting with alumni as part of this effort.

Golf Committee 2010 Hits the Ground Running!

Already preparations are underway for the 24th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic scheduled for Monday, May 3, 2010. North Hills Country Club and Plandome Country Club will once again serve as our hosts.

Our 2010 Chairman is Jim Kelly ’86. Jim is a long time member of the committee and will lead us to a new level. Our Honorary Chairperson is Ann Lonergan. Ann has been working the golf outing for many years selling raffle tickets at the dinner. Both individuals are well deserving of this honor.

Gather your friends and clients and join us on Monday, May 3rd for a wonderful day of good friends, great food and lots of fun.

Brian Klimas ’98 served as the MC for Freshman Field Days again this year… notice the Brooks Brothers look he brought to center court this year…

The Freshman liturgy was held at the start of Field Day 2009. Fr. Shannon offered his thoughts during the homily on the experiences that have given him the most fear in his life. One occurred during his first week at Molloy when he asked someone “Where’s the Gym?” The response was, “Frank, you’re standing in it”. We all have fears and we must work together to conquer them – a simple, powerful message for all of us. Stanner Erica Mundy ’04 played the piano for the choir. From the echoes created by the starter’s gun on Stanner Field, you know that everyone will go home tired today.

Everyone with possible exception of Messers Gallagher and DaGrossa – what were they thinking when they dressed for school this morning.

Around the School

Opening week Liturgies were held with each class gathering to celebrate our faith. The Senior Liturgy was also the setting for the installation of 20 Eucharistic Ministers. It is indeed heartening to see our students actively participate in every aspect of the Mass. Our choirs were wonderful, the transformation of the Curran Gym into a place for worship never ceases to amaze me and the willing participation of our student body is reason itself for celebration. With all of the challenges we face each day it is good to take time to give thanks for what we have and the opportunities ahead.

Around the Marist World

Marist leaders from the US and Ireland met this past summer to discuss what it means to be a leader in a Marist, Catholic school. Brother Thomas Schady and Mr. John Sherry represented Molloy. The attached report summarizes their work at this conference.

Brother Don Bisson’s comment is a challenge we should all consider as Stanners. Don explained that, “for Marist Educators the ultimate challenge of our leadership is to leave a legacy rooted in ongoing, life-giving service.” For the complete brief on this conference, click here.

Freshman Parent Night

With more than 420 freshmen, you can guarantee that there were many interested parents at the Freshmen Parent Night event on Thursday night. Assistant Principal for Students, Mr. Ken Auer, Freshman Counselor Brother Eugene Birmingham, Principal, Brother Thomas Schady and Freshman Guidance Counselor Mrs. Loo advised the parents on some strategies to support their freshmen students as they navigate their first year at Molloy.

Follow the Handbook

Encourage Involvement

Provide space at home to do their homework

And, “let go and let them experience this next step in their life.”

Parents then had the opportunity to follow their child’s schedule, briefly visiting each of their classrooms and teachers. The halls were alive with parents figuring out the even and odd numbering system, exploring the building and some were even looking for lockers. The evening ended with cookies and punch in the cafeteria. Many parents made new friends and renewed their Stanner Connections as alumni.

Everyone’s Back and Settling In …

All students reported to school this morning and it was indeed a full house. The halls were buzzing with activity as our freshmen made their way from class to class. There were the usual challenges – locker combinations, odd and even sides to the building and the new classrooms that have been added since last year. Other than that, the first few days were great!

Academic Achievements

Mr. Ed Jennings ’64 sent word concerning Class of 2009 AP Scholars. Molloy graduated 5 AP Scholars with Distinction, 12 AP Scholars with Honor and 30 AP Scholars. Congratulations to all of these outstanding Stanners!

Spiritual Update

We received word from Thomas Clarke ’88 that Father George Witt, S.J. ’82 will be installed as pastor of St. Ignatius Loyola Church, 980 Park Avenue, NY, NY 10028 on September 20th at 11 AM in the main church. Brother Pat Hogan provided the picture of Father Witt at the Hermitage in France, saying Mass for the Lourdes Volunteers in 2006. One historic note is that Fr. Witt is using the Chalice that Fr. Champagnat used.

News and Notes

Thomas Dwyer ’62 stopped in this week to catch up on what was new at Molloy. He visited with Jeff Gallagher ’88 and then came to the Alumni Office to look through some yearbooks. After retiring from the NYPD, Tom became a licensed PI, and has dedicated a good part of his free time to a new program called Horses for Heroes. This eight week program matches injured veterans with horses for exercise, therapy and confidence building. It is a win – win for everyone involved. Tom, a veteran himself, is doing this work as part of his personal commitment to Brother Leo Richard, his mentor. He promised Br. Leo that he would “pay it forward” in terms of helping others.

James Beattie ’02 stopped in to visit Chris Dougherty ’91. He has completed his MSW from Adelphi and is looking to start a career in counseling. His primary interest is in working with at risk youth, preferably in the school setting. His undergraduate work was completed at SUNY Binghamton. While here he visited with a number of former teachers including Jeff Gallagher ’88. He would be interested in hearing from anyone with contacts in the field of social work.

Harry Villareal ’92 was in the news the other day. He has served as a ball boy for the US Open Tennis matches for a number of years, now. His view is much better than most, but the price he pays for the seat is a bit steeper than most. He now wears a brace on each leg to “keep him in the game”. He is quoted in the article claiming Archbishop Molloy Track as the starting point on the route to fame.

Father John Serio SDB ’71 called in this week to let us know that he has been appointed Principal of Don Bosco Cristo Rey HS in Takoma Park, MD 20912. It has an interesting concept for a high school. Students enroll as regular high school students, but they are able to offset their tuition payments through work study programs in area businesses. We will be hearing more about his work later this fall.

Samantha Pawlak ’05 has joined the staff in the Alumni / Development office as Assistant to the Director for Alumni Relations. Sam, a recent SUNY Purchase graduate with a degree in Journalism will be working on all alumni communications and events.

Matt Rizzotti ’04 has joined the staff at Molloy as a TA. He will also be working with our baseball teams and has agreed to serve as liaison to the Class of ’04 for their upcoming reunion.

Mary Braunstein ’05 has joined the staff at Molloy as a TA. She is a graduate of SUNY New Paltz and is currently pursuing her graduate degree in Education.

Opening Faculty Meeting News and Notes – Welcome Brother Thomas Schady, FMS

The faculty returned to Molloy on Tuesday with stories of a wide variety of summer travel, work and play. The opening day Mass was offered by Fr. Pat Flanagan. His sermon offered us food for thought about the “Cast of Characters” we will work with this school year. He linked his stories as an educator at St. John’s to the Gospel reading about Mary’s family lineage and the various characters who were part of her heritage. We always seem to remember those who stand out in our life… and they remember us!

Brother Thomas recognized the new members of the staff and faculty in his opening remarks and the balance of the morning involved hearing from the Administration on issues ranging from technology, to our academic and organizational success as a High School, to the physical changes in the building that took place over the summer. Some highlights include:

Sr. Elizabeth reported on the success of our Middle States, Mid-term Accreditation Report. Because of our in-depth self-evaluation, Molloy requires no further visitation at this time.

The academic success of the Class of 2009 with a 100% graduation rate and our test score consistency as a college preparatory school. Mr. Jennings data suggest that our students have done very well as a result of their time at Molloy.

Mr. Auer commented that consistency is a major key to maintaining discipline in the school.

C.J. Mallia walked the teachers through the minor changes in the electronic attendance and grade reporting for this year.

Nurse Kathy Forgione offered us some common sense solutions for keeping the flu at bay in Molloy this year… wash you hands, use sanitizer, cough into a tissue and when you have a fever, stay home… only by following these simple rules will we be able to stave off the latest version of the flu.

Mr. Sherry then welcomed everyone back, formally welcomed Brother Thomas and then offered the following thoughts.

“This summer a multitude of projects were undertaken for the improvement and upgrading of our school. Our old chemistry lab was transformed into two rooms, a new frosh computer lab and a classroom. The lab equipment has been upgraded to laptops. The DeChiaro computer lab has been transformed into a regular classroom.

Now for the things that you don’t see, but how they play an important role in the school. Two new exhaust fans were installed on the roof replacing existing equipment. All of the basements return heating pipes were replaced. Thermostats were installed on all radiators to regulate the heat. I know we will still need to tweak the system once it is turned on, but this will provide the school with a more even flow of heat and dramatic energy savings.

This could not have been done without the assistance and input from many, many people. I want to thank CJ and his staff for his work on the IT infrastructure. Thanks to Br. Pat and his crew for their help and to Gino Fazio of the Directory for overseeing the many projects.”

Century Ride

This morning a team of Stanners, Esopus veterans, and friends hit the pavement in Central Park for a 100-mile bicycle ride to the Marist Brothers Retreat House in Esopus, NY in order to raise funds for the Retreat House and Mid-Hudson Valley Camp. The rain came down, but the riders came out on top.

In addition to spiritual retreats, the Marist Brothers Retreat House is home to a nine-week camp program that caters to the needs of children and adults with developmental, mental, and physical disabilities, deaf children, children living with cancer, pediatric patients from Harlem Hospital’s Family Care Center, and inner-city students. This “joy-filled summer camp experience” has been making memories for over 35 years.

The bulk of funds raised by this year’s Esopus Century Ride will go towards restoring the pool area. A great deal of time is spent in and around the pool each summer – it is a centerpiece of camp, a place filled with wide smiles and sounds of happiness.

The Century Ride team has been training hard, and is asking for help in reaching their fundraising goal – and stresses that contributions of any amount are greatly appreciated. Secure online donations are being accepted through Active.com:

Esopus Century Ride 2009

All Present and Accounted For!

All of the students have been to school for their first day back… Locker combinations have been checked, textbooks and reading books have been picked up, schedules checked, homerooms assigned and we are ready to launch into the new year on Monday.

Welcome Back!

In the coming weeks we will introduce new staff and faculty to you via the E-News, and as time moves on, we will bring you news of the school year and happenings within the world of Stanners. We have planned some new regional meetings, a new cohesive web environment and next week we will introduce the newest members of the Stanner Hall of Fame. They will be installed formally on November 7th at the annual Mass of Remembrance and Stanner Reunion. There is much to do in preparation for these events and more innovations to come this year.

One final note. We have a new member to the Stanner Alumni Association Staff. Samantha Pawlak ‘05 has joined our staff this week and will be working in the area of Alumni relations. She holds a BA from SUNY Purchase in Journalism and Creative Writing. We look forward to having her as part of our team this year. Welcome, Samantha.

Great American Stanner Alumni Tour
Regional Reunions Tentatively Scheduled

Last year John Sherry met with a number of small groups of Stanners as he traveled. A formal gathering was held in Chicago graciously hosted by Jim O’Neill ‘80, and a number of dinners were held in NY with smaller groups.

This year we would like to gather Stanner Alumni in the following cities depending on the number of people interested and the availability of a venue for the event. At the present time we are considering the following locations and dates for the Great American Stanner Alumni Tour.

Connecticut – October
Florida – February Winter Vacation
Chicago – June – Possibly 15-17 or 18
California – SF & LA – May 7-14

If anyone is interested in hosting an event in these cities around these timeframes, please contact Charlie Flood – Director of Alumni Relations at cflood@molloyhs.org. We will keep you up to date in the E-News once sites and dates are finalized.

Sports

X-Country Camp

It was a great camp, with the possible exception of the tentative bus ride home. I am sure there is a follow-up story there somewhere! Hopefully everyone is putting in their miles. Here is evidence we actually did practice… the proof will be in the performance.

News and Notes

John Sherry ‘61, President of Molloy, reported that he had a great visit with classmates last weekend in Thornwood, NY. On Saturday, August 29 Tom Smyth’s wife Yvette had a surprise party for him to celebrate life. Attending were three of his classmates, left to right – John Sherry, Vinnie Donnelly and John Specce. Tom Smyth is seated wearing the Molloy sweatshirt.

Dr. Favio Gaudio ‘85 Makes the NY Daily News Front Page

Dr. Favio Gaudio ‘85 was on the medical miracle team which appeared on the front page of Wednesday’s NY Daily News. He appeared on CBS’ Early Show on Thursday, September 3rd. I spoke with him Wednesday morning and told him that I would share this information with his fellow Stanners. He reminisced about Molloy and Mr. Salmon, “the man who inspired me to become a Doctor”.

Brooklyn dad makes miracle recovery from cardiac arrest

A Brooklyn dad whose heart stopped beating for an incredible 45 minutes was released from the hospital Tuesday.
Joseph Tiralosi was raised from the dead after he went into sudden cardiac arrest two weeks ago.

More thoughts from New Orleans Trip

The following thoughts came into the office from Christine Lewis ‘06 after the St. Marcellin Society trip to New Orleans this summer:

Sharing a desire to help others and a connection to Molloy, Janine Accardi (Esopus & Lourdes volunteer), Cassondra Calandrillo (’07), Chris Dougherty (’91, Guidance Department), Kelly Early (Math Department), Dominic Garafola (’06), Scott Kuhner (’05), Christine Lewis (’06), Joe LoGiudice (’06), Cristina Penin (’08), and Bryan Proano (’04) headed down to New Orleans for 10 days of volunteer work and experiencing the city. Having decided to drive down, we were graciously accommodated by Molloy Alumni Director Charlie Flood, ‘68 and his wife Linda overnight at their Tennessee home during both legs of the trip.

While in New Orleans we worked with Catholic Charities Operation Helping Hands through the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Working closely with volunteers from Notre Dame as well as Louisiana locals, we ten assisted in removing lead from two work sites. Both homes had been heavily affected by Hurricane Katrina, and the goal was to make them safe for both renovation and living.

O’Neal Bourgeois, the foreman of the Burgundy St. site, was kind enough to take us to see the infamous levees, the demolished remains of what was once the largest mangrove forest, and the numerous vacant and damaged lots that remain in the lower Ninth Ward. Having lost his home in Katrina, Neal was just one of the countless people we encountered who are devoting their life to restoring New Orleans.

When not working we were able to take in many of the sights and tastes New Orleans had to offer. From shrimp & alligator cheesecake appetizers at “Jacques-imos” to snow balls with the “Queen of the Ball” we had a sampling of many things classic to the area. We also got to see the French Quarter, the Garden District, the Mississippi River, Bourbon St. and we celebrated a Saturday vigil mass at the Cathedral of Saint Louis right in Jackson Square. The trip was a learning experience for all who were involved, and none of us will ever forget it.

November 7th — Reunion Time at Molloy

Calling all Stanners from Classes ending in either a 4 or 9!

50th Anniversary Stanners from 1959

The Golden Anniversary class is the St. Ann’s / Molloy class of 1959. They will receive their gold medallions at the Mass of Remembrance that evening. These men started at St. Ann’s and went on to graduate from Archbishop Molloy High School. Of special interest to them will be; St. Ann’s Courtyard, the St. Ann’s Bell and Statue along with the memorabilia in the St. Ann’s display case.

25th Anniversary Stanners from 1984

The Silver Anniversary Class, the class of 1984, will celebrate 25 years that night. Members of the class will receive their Silver Medallions at the Mass of Remembrance that evening. We are certain of a good turn out from these Stanners due to their ongoing commitment to the school in so many ways.

All other reunion groups will have special areas designated at the cocktail hour to gather and reminisce. Dinner tables will also be designated by reunion class.

Online Reunion Registration

Runners Take Notice!

A number of Stanners maintain their health through their participation in track events across the country. Dorothy DeNoto, Librarian, A. J. Power, class of 1984, Kevin Power, class of 1987, and Chrissy Maio, wife of Stanner Tony Maio (who could not compete due to back surgery but was there to cheer us on), class of 1984. There is a part of this story that some of us do not know. Dorothy DeNoto was not always an athlete. Her story is an inspiration to all of us who fight the battle of the bulge…

Transformation from Super Slouch to Elite Athlete

Who could have ever envisioned when 15 year Molloy Librarian, Dorothy DeNoto was almost 400 pounds that she would ever consider herself an athlete… certainly not her. At her heaviest three and a half years ago, she could barely move more than a few feet without feeling tremendous pain in her feet and back…her breathing was labored. All of that changed when she lost more than 250 pounds with tremendous encouragement and support from the Molloy Community. However, that was not enough for one Molloy alumnus. Fellow faculty member and Girls Varsity Track Coach A.J. Power, class of 1984, knew that Dorothy could do more.

Through gentle prodding AJ convinced her to sign up for the Mighty North Fork Triathlon, held every year a mile from his dad’s house. It was tradition for his family and friends to spend the weekend together and compete in that race. Once committed, Dorothy’s training began in earnest. Biking, swimming, running and competing in the State Park Summer Run Series every Monday night along with running in the Shelter Island 10K were all part of her grueling effort to physically prepare herself for the challenge. When she crossed that finish line, A.J and other Stanner supporters were there to see her smiling in triumph. A.J. Power has created an athletic monster. She went from super slouch to competitive athlete.

Dorothy is currently training for 2 more biathlons, one more triathlon and Molloy’s — Andrew Harvey Memorial Run, all taking place this fall. She plans to share her new athletic skills with others who want to get more physically fit. One idea she has is starting a Physical Fitness Club for students who don’t feel that they have the capability to be athletic. Her eyes well up with tears as she thinks about how much her life has changed. She feels blessed that she had so much support from the Molloy family.

Dorothy sent in the following picture of the event. “The first one is when the finish line was around the corner and AJ came back to see where I was and told me ‘Dorothy, its right around the corner, you did it’….I got overwhelmed, started to cry, had to stop to compose myself and the professional race photographer was right there, unbeknownst to me and shot the picture — it’s priceless. The second picture is me crossing the finish line and the third one, is of the Stanner related people who were racing with me and supporting me every step of the way. The 4th and final picture is of me and AJ after the race. How fun is this!”

Freshman Camp — A Huge Success

Earlier this summer 116 incoming freshmen attended AMHS Freshman Camp in Esopus. The Camp Director this year was our own Jim Sheldon ’88. Brother Roy ’62 couldn’t stay away, and ran the kitchen as chief cook and bottle washer. Below are a few pictures from camp. Additional photographs are on the web site. As you can see from the photographs many students, faculty, administrators and alumni participated in making this a wonderful experience.

Freshman camp is designed to give attendees a jump start on developing their friendships, understanding what it means to be a Stanner and to have some fun. Many student’s list Freshman Camp as one of the most memorable experiences as a Stanner. The Brian’s — Kelly ’94 and Klimas ’98 were essential cogs in the big wheels of Summer Camp this year, as always.

Alumni Support the Esopus Summer Camp Programs

Where Non Scholae Sed Vitae Comes to Life

In addition to the Freshman Camp, there are many other Marist camps held over the summer which serve a variety of constituents. Many Molloy alumni quietly support these camps with their time and talent. Yet, without their help, these camps could not afford to operate. The Brothers are also a major part of the Marist Camp system. Many of them spend the last days of school preparing for their “summer work” in the camps. Brother James Vagan, Brother Bob Andrews and Brother Pat Hogan to name three, devote countless hours to the work involved in maintaining this valuable part of the Marist tradition.

Saint Marcellin Society Members travel to New Orleans

Lead Paint Abatement and Katrina Recovery were the Orders of the Day.

Ten Stanners and guests journeyed from Briarwood to New Orleans to work with the Diocese there on their ongoing Katrina Relief project. Various individuals worked on finish carpentry, painting and lead paint abatement in one home.

Chris Dougherty and the team stopped in Nashville and stayed with Charlie Flood ’68 and his wife, Linda on their way down south and back. The drive was long but the work was rewarding. These Stanners and guests will have much to remember about their commitment and service to others as they reflect on this trip in years to come.

Scott Kuhner ’05, summed up his experience in the following note:

“New Orleans was a tremendous gift to each member. We gained new friends, a greater appreciation for nature’s devastating power, some out—of—this—world food, amongst many other things. But what may have been the most grand benefit was the impact it had on our sense of selves. We have all come to know images of ourselves; a scholar, a counselor, a nurse, jobless, college kid, or teacher, to name a few. On this trip we gave into the idea of being something else. We experienced ourselves in a totally different way. We put down our usual selves and adopted this new persona, informed by our past experiences but open to something new. We dove into New Orleans head first and came away with an appreciation for the capacity we have as people. I never knew I could be so pleased, so happy, and so excited to be alive. The work we did, the people we worked and lived with, and that attitude we took have changed us forever.

Thank you for making it possible.

Others in the SMS journeyed to Lourdes to serve others as part of their spiritual development and commitment to our motto; Non Scholae Sed Vitae. We will have more on these trips and Stanners in Service section of the annual magazine in November.

Molloy Softball Players travels to Italy

Coach Lou Santos took 14 Molloy Softball players along with others from the area to Italy for 2 weeks this summer. In all 43 people; parents, family members and friends, traveled to watch the team play a total of 10 games in Verona and Bolate, outside of Milan. In order to get a sense of the culture, the girls stayed with players from other teams in both cities.

They also visited Rome, saw all the usual highlights and on the feast day of St. Peter where the Pope came out to St. Peter’s square offered his blessing in six languages. As part of the tour, they stopped to pay respects at the US Memorial Cemetery at Anzio. They also went to Florence for the arts and shopping… Venice rounded out the itinerary.

David Martocci ’80 let the office know that there is a golf outing on September 12th celebrating the life of his brother and fellow Stanner, Thomas ’78. Thomas passed away last September and a tribute page has been set up in his name on the St. Jude’s Hospital page. Read David’s tribute to his brother and fellow Stanner at this website.

If you would like to attend this outing, please contact David at: maj2@comcast.net for more details.

Ozzie Egas ’02 sent word that he and his wife are the proud parents of Elizabeth Angelica, born on July 31st 2009. This is their third child, and as Ozzie said in his note… a future Stanner. We wish the Egas family good health and much rest.

In Memoriam

We received word over the summer about a number of Stanners and friends who passed.

As many of you know from the website notification, the class of 2008 has lost another member. Daniel Malecki ’08 was in a fatal auto accident while in Poland over the summer. Please keep the entire Malicki family and especially his brother and fellow Stanner, Sebastian ’06 in your prayers as they celebrate his life and mourn his loss.

William O’Hanlon sent us a note on the website that John Taliercio ’73 passed away after a prolonged battle with multiple myeloma. John left behind his wife and their 8 year old son. Please keep this family in your prayers as they grieve.

Br. John Mole’ sent us a note on the website that Peter Michael Korniluk a graduate from St. Ann’s Grammar School passed away on Saturday August 8th this year. He had spoken with Peter’s wife, Lee and they shared his story. Pete worked for Disney for many years having been hired by Roy Disney, personally.

Many of you will remember Stefan “Steve” Marton from his years on the maintenance staff at Molloy. Always a willing helper, he retired in 2008 after 28 years of service to the school. Steve passed away this summer. Nancy Catalanotto (Mrs. “C”) from the President’s office took the time to visit with his family and to share stories about Steve.

Brother John Alexis, a former Molloy faculty member, treasurer of the school and a long time resident of the 4th Floor Community of Marist Brothers passed away from complications after surgery on July 25th.

Former faculty colleague and Director of the Alumni Association Jim Kinnier wrote the following tribute to Brother John Alexis:

“I was sorry to hear about the death of Brother John Alexis. There are not many Saints that walked the Halls of Molloy but Brother John was one of them. He was a quiet man who did God’s work in a gentle and Christian way. I will truly miss him. My condolences to the Marist Brothers and to his family.”

Please keep these Stanner families and all who have passed in your prayers and thoughts.

God Bless all Stanners!

Rob began his career in “Balloons” at “Kidz Kraze Entertainment” while still a freshman at Molloy. His DJ business — “In the Mix Entertainment” came later. Now, as a sophomore at Iona, he manages both of his businesses along with his cousin and his sister, Brianna ’10. It is a true family business and it helps him to manage the room and board costs at Iona where he carries a double major in finance and accounting.

The favorite part of his day is when he shows up at a party to DJ and then breaks out the balloons to get the party going. He is a true entertainer with a dual set of skills. The DJ work launched in 2008 and has grown through his association with Iona and through word of mouth promotion.

Anyone attending the Hall of Fame Dinner and Reunion on November 7th will see him at work on the stage as he serves up music for the evening to an audience of Stanners.

Rob is interested in working with Stanners and Stanner families as they plan their family parties and corporate events. One of his specialties is working “Sweet Sixteen” parties. He can be reached at: rhines1@iona.edu . When you e-mail him to make your reservation, be sure to let him know that you are a Stanner.

Catholic School Night at Citi-Field…

The weather was not perfect, but the attitude was outstanding… more than 125 Stanners gathered at Citi Field on Wednesday night to watch the Mets battle St. Louis 11 – 0! It was truly amazing. In addition to the game, there was “the great cannoli hunt” resulting in the most colorful and tasty find of the evening… in Met’s colors, too – go figure!

Wearing my Molloy Alumni shirt, the gentleman at the gate introduced himself as “Molloy – Class of ’80”, Travis ‘09 and Rosie the photographer came up to the Molloy section to visit, and, as I was leaving, a woman stopped me and asked, “Is that the College or Molloy High School?” As it turns out, her brother went to Molloy. My brother, Jim, a St. Dominic’s graduate commented… “You guys are Everywhere!” No truer words have ever been spoken.

Momentum Repertory Company Presents:
THE UNLIKELY ADVENTURE OF RACE McCLOUD, PRIVATE EYE

Written and Directed by Tom Hoefner ’96

The Unlikely Adventure of Race McCloud, Private Eye is a comic-book style comedy/adventure about the second-most clueless detective in Westside City. When his secret-agent family goes missing, it is up to Race and his 15 year-old super-genius niece Cookie to find them. Their search takes them around the world, and they soon face off against a masked vigilante, vampires, werewolves, ancient Egyptian curses, “Perfect” Troopers, and more as they hunt for their missing relatives.

Writer/Director Tom Hoefner first created Race McCloud over ten years ago, as the main character of a series of Murder Mystery Dinners that he began writing while a student at St. Joseph’s College, Brooklyn, at the age of 18. Over time, he has further developed Race and his world in stories designed to be told through a wide array of media, including film, comics, and audio drama. For this, Race’s definitive adventure, he has brought the detective back to where it all began, and to where he truly belongs: the stage.

Race features an original score by composer Andrew Barkan (Conlag, Noor, ads for Sprint), choreography by popular Broadway Dance Center instructor Lainie Munro (Hope and Faith w/Kelly Ripa, Oklahoma! w/Rue McClanahan), fight choreography by Eugene Solfanelli (Broken Canyon), sound design by FringeNYC veteran Geoff Moonen, and promotional artwork by cartoonist and graphic designer Kev Gillespie (www.rhcomics.com). The cast combines both young and established talent. Tom Brown as Race and Fiona Kearns as Cookie headline a group that features Ms. Munro, Mr. Solfanelli, Cas Marino (Torch Song Trilogy, Black Henna Productions), Jade Rothman, Adam Mace, Kimberly Yates, Jeremy Lardieri, Kiley McDonald, Brendan Walsh, and Ted Frank.

Mindy Smith and Jackie Jacobi founded Momentum Repertory Company in 2008 with the purpose of providing young artists a safe haven in which to develop their creative voices. Over the past year they have produced revivals of Godspell and Barefoot in the Park as well as a very successful reading series. Race McCloud is their first production of a full-length original work.

The New York International Fringe Festival – FringeNYC
A production of The Present Company
August 14th – 30th
Tickets: $15. For tickets visit www.FringeNYC.org

Thank you Brother Roy ’62

This year we bid farewell to Brother Roy George ’62, who, after 10 1/2 years as Principal has accepted the position of Vice Provincial of the Marist Brothers for North America.

We held a bon voyage party for Brother Roy this week and in his remarks, he commented on the three events that had the greatest impact on him during his tenure as Principal.

First there was 9/11. He recounted the story of sitting with one student at dismissal time. He was the last student to go home that day. He recounted how the conversations he had with Chris Waters that day will be on his heart forever. It was a defining moment for him.

There was the process of taking Molloy Co-ed and the day the girls arrived at Molloy. He remembered the TV cameras and all of the attention we received that day.

Finally, there was the 50th Anniversary Celebration and our journey to St. Patrick’s Cathedral for Mass. His only request for our 50th Anniversary was to celebrate Mass as a Catholic, Marist Community. We did, and we did it with style and class.

There are many more memories of course; Mole Day celebrations, Walk-a-thons, the teaching of Chemistry and teaching in general and, of course, the students… his kids. They are the reason we exist.

We wish you well, Brother Roy as you begin your new role as Vice Provincial.

Faculty Spotlight — Brother Thomas Schady, FMS

Brother Thomas Schady, FMS, comes to Molloy from his most recent assignment as the Associate Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of New York. He served in this capacity from 1992 through 2008 and has been on sabbatical this past year. Having supervised 55 archdiocesan high schools in ten counties, he is no stranger to our work here at Molloy.

Brother grew up in the Bronx and attended Mt. St Michael’s Academy where he first met the Marist Brothers. He was impressed by their dedication and caring and their commitment to the work of education. He left high school and started his Marist training. We have been fortunate to get to know Brother Thomas this past week as he started his meetings with the administration and faculty members.

During my session with him we discussed his new assignment. Though difficult to form a lasting impression in just one week, he did feel free to say that he was most impressed by the genuine caring and generosity of spirit he experienced. “Molloy has an Educationally Sound program and is certainly one of the outstanding examples of Catholic education in the region.” He said he was “genuinely delighted” to be a part of Molloy.

No stranger to the classroom, his early teaching assignments included St. Mary’s School in Poughkeepsie, St. Joseph’s School in Kingston, St. John’s School in Beacon, NY and St. Augustine’s School in Andover, MA. He served as Principal in St. Agnes Boys High School in NY, and as District Superintendent of Schools in Dutchess and Ulster Counties in NY prior to becoming the Associate Superintendent.

Brother Thomas holds a BA in English from Marist College, a Masters Degree in Library Science from C.W. Post, LI University. He has additional graduate work in; Education, Educational Leadership, and Educational Administration from; the University of San Diego, Manhattan College, Fordham University and Loyola Marymount University. His Certifications include; NYS School District Administration, NYS School Administrator and Supervisor, NYS English Teacher (7-12) and NYS Media Specialist.

We welcome Brother Thomas to our community and will keep him in our prayers as he makes his transition to this new position.

Non Scholae — Sed Vitae

Tom Hill ’05 stopped in with a friend of his from Marist College. Tom is networking to find a job in Finance or Marketing and wants other Stanners to know that he is willing to start at the bottom and work his way up… We toured the school and had a great visit.

Gerald DeMeo ’69 called in to track down a couple of his classmates from the class of ’69… it seems he is considering another pilgrimage to Woodstock in honor of their visit there 40 years ago… I wonder how many of us claim to have been there vs. how many really did attend… and can remember…

Correction — Sean Tubridy ’01 sent in the following correction this week. My apologies to Michael 01’ and Anthony ’99 .

“FYI you published that Michael D’Annunzio 01 is pursuing a degree in nursing when in fact he graduated from NYU and is an energy trader at Bank of Montreal. His brother Anthony class of 1999 is pursuing nursing and is the one who Ms Gannon saw while he visited Molloy.”

A number of students and some of our more recent college graduates have stopped by looking for work opportunities. As you might expect, these are the best and brightest in the field, and they are willing workers. Let us know your staffing needs for this summer and we will make the Stanner Connection for you. Contact our office at: cflood@molloyhs.org .

Our students are looking for summer employment opportunities. In addition to the summer work, we have approximately 30 students interesting in internships in the science community. Lab work, research work and some project work tied to their involvement in Ms. Mallia’s Integrated Science Curriculum is of most interest to these young minds. They have a strong interest in medicine, genetics, bio-engineering and general engineering. If you have an interest in mentoring a Stanner thorough this process, please contact our office at: cflood@molloyhs.org .

Around the School

Regents week, reviews and loosened tie restrictions are all in vogue this week around the school. Mr. Stolze held his annual pot-luck supper review, and mini sessions and coaching classes are being held throughout the building. The good news is that this is one of the coolest regents weeks teachers can remember. Next week we will wind down the year with the last test on Thursday. Another year behind us… everyone moves up a notch and the incoming freshmen are wondering what to expect. Many of them will find out when they arrive at freshman camp for their orientation to Molloy.

Coach Curran will host his basketball camp here this summer, and people will be in and out preparing for next year. I have heard about a wide variety of summer travel plans and for the most part, I will be home in Nashville figuring out how to make it all happen again next year. With one more E-News to go, my attentions will turn to the new web site launch in the fall.

Faculty Update — Jeff Gallagher ’88

Jeff Gallagher has been accepted to participate in the nationally recognized Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute, a field course in American History focused on reviewing first hand artifacts and reference materials. He will be touring a number of historical sites in the Williamsburg region. He is especially interested in working with teachers from around America studying early American history. Part of this experience requires him to return to Molloy and share his studies with the History department. In this way our investment in this program will pay additional dividends as the new information and techniques are shared with his department.

Correction: In the recent Spotlight on Palmina Dionisi, I reported her husband as Joseph… He informed me through Palmina that his name is “Carlo”… my apologies to Carlo.

Non Scholae — Sed Vitae

Ms. Gannon was out at Louie’s Restaurant in Port Washington the other day and met Michael D’Annunzio ’01. He graduated from Seton Hall with a degree in Public Relations and Restaurant Management and is now in his second year at Molloy College in pursuit of a degree in Nursing.

Kevin Ropenus ’90 and his wife of one year Gail stopped by to see us while on vacation in NY. Kevin has worked for Walgreen’s Drugs as a store manager. After nine years with the company he was able to open his own store in N. Olmsted, Ohio. Kevin’s fondest memory of Molloy was the 1988 City Championship Soccer team. He sends greetings out to all of his teammates and classmates. Now that he has entered the computer generation he promises to stay in touch. Kevin attended St. John’s University after Molloy where he majored in Government and Political Science.

Amanda Boggiano ’06 stopped in to visit with some of her former teachers and while she was here she visited the Alumni Office. In fact, she was the inspiration for the lead article in this week’s E-News. A senior at Franklin @ Marshall College majoring in Anthropology, she is turning her energy to the pursuit of employment at the end of her college experience. We discussed her recent, three-week trip to China; walking the Great Wall, visiting the Terra Cotta Soldiers and seeing the crescent lake in the Gobi Desert. She has also served in leadership positions with her sorority and, as a result, understands the politics of higher education. In addition to her life guard skills, she has worked in retail and understands working with the public.

In Memoriam

We have learned from Mr. Dombrowski that Fr. Peter Purpura’s ’99 brother, Mark passed away recently. Please keep this family in your prayers as they mourn his loss.

Henry Villadiego ’90 sent in the following notice concerning Salvatore J. Martino ’43 of Pleasant Plains who passed away on March 12, 2009. Salvatore was the beloved husband of Barbara, loving father of Janet Piccolomini and Kerry Johnston. He was my wife’s uncle by marriage. When uncle Salvatore heard that Henry went to Molloy he insisted on meeting me right away, being a St. Ann’s alum himself. He had a great affinity for his High School and is dearly missed.

Please keep this family and all Stanners who have experienced a loss this in your prayers each day. God Bless all Stanners.

Women of Molloy Roundtable Report

The Alumni Association hosted a panel of female graduates from a variety of classes to discuss ways to involve the women of Molloy in the activities of the Stanner Alumni Association. Our first two classes of female graduates have moved beyond their college experience and are currently working in a wide variety of professions, with a good number of them now pursuing graduate degrees. First on their list of topics was the value that the Stanner Alumni Association could bring to them as a networking mechanism. There was a discussion of the upcoming 5th Anniversary in November, and the potential to focus a celebration around 10 Years of Girls Athletics at Molloy. Coach Maureen Rosenbaum suggested a ten-year reunion for all of the women who have participated in the athletic program. We will work on that with the athletic department and coaches to see when an event like this might occur.

Special thanks to Melissa Stathes for organizing this event. Though unable to attend herself due to a prior academic commitment, she did encourage participation from across the years. The evening opened a dialog which we will continue as the event schedule for 2009-2010 unfolds. Thanks again to Mary Pat Gannon for attending this event and supporting the work of our Association and for her help organizing the Senior Breakfast.

Auction Lunch with NYC Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly ’59

Michael Connolly ’90 recently had lunch with several of his family members and NYC Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly ’59 at the Harvard Club in NYC. Mike purchased this auction item at the 23rd Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic. He wrote, “It was an afternoon of good food, and even better company and conversation. The Commissioner was a pleasure to meet and was a very gracious host for Mike’s family and friend who attended.”

Faculty Celebrates Br. Declan’s 55th Anniversary as a Marist Educator

Tuesday night, a dinner was held in celebration of Brother Declan Murray’s 55th year as a Marist educator. Faculty, friends, former students from St. Helena’s all turned out at Alba’s for the celebration. Mr. Sherry presented Brother with a Certificate of Appreciation for his time here at Molloy. Former students came in to sit with Brother and to reminisce about his work at St. Helena’s. Congratulations Brother, and as only Lou Santos could say, “we look forward to the next 55 years.”

The books are on their carts – all counted and collected
Reviews are under way – content dots to be connected
Regents tests are in the safe – no rule to be neglected
The countdown has begun — summer sun to be reflected…

Faculty Spotlight — Palmina Dionisi

Palmina Dionisi teaches Italian… no surprises there. The story behind her teaching Italian at Molloy has a few twists and turns along the way, however. Her parents grew up and were married in Italy. As Palmina so eloquently states, she was “made in Italy, born in the USA”. She grew up in a three family home on Jackson Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and she is a New Yorker through and through. The other families in the house included her three male cousins, and, with few female playmates on the street, she grew up playing stickball with the boys. When I asked her about living anywhere other than NYC she was quick to say, “I can’t live anywhere without great bagels and the New York Yankees.” It seems NYC life and sports are in her blood.

She attended St. Francis of Paola and St. Adalbert’s schools in Brooklyn growing up, and then attended Grover Cleveland High School. This break in her Catholic school experience ended when she enrolled at St. John’s University where she received her degree in Italian and Secondary Education. “It was great to return to a school where the ethics were clear and the teaching was outstanding.” It was like coming home.

Palmina did her student teaching at Molloy under the direction of her mentor Francine Bonventre. After St. John’s she moved on to Rutgers University where she took graduate courses. While she studied, she taught undergraduates Italian. Between her first and second year there she went to Urbino, Italy as a teacher. She toured, taught and lived as an Italian for six weeks that summer. Her love of travel and life-long learning comes from that experience. During her second year, she took a call from Molloy concerning a teaching position. She interviewed but as it was for Spanish, a language she now teaches at Molloy. She did not get that particular position. Instead, she worked for the Port Authority of NY as a “Gateway Receptionist”. While at Rutgers she met her husband Joseph, a Supervising Language Specialist with the F.B.I. She has two sons, Vincent who attends school at Our Lady of Hope and Joseph, a sophomore at Molloy.

In 1987 she received another call from Bob Jones for a teaching position at Molloy; this time the fit was perfect — Italian. It has been twenty-three years, and upon reflection, she has no regrets. One of the attributes she has come to respect at Molloy is the way we teach our students. Everything is tied to faith, family, values, and integrity. These are the “positive constants” you come to expect from a Stanner.

When asked what she would like to see change here she thought for a minute and then shared. She would like to see more rigor in our senior year program. “We should incorporate a large lecture format class in preparation for the college setting. Along with that class we should teach note taking and summarizing skills in every class. Another offering in the life skills area might include personal finance, budgeting and improved consumer skills including making travel reservations, local trip planning and time management.” Preparing them for their next great adventure is part of our responsibility if we are to live up to our motto, Non Scholae Sed Vitae.

As we closed the interview we talked about the future of Molloy. She wants to see us maintain our technological leadership and test new methodologies. On-line education opportunities should be opened up to our students — especially in the area of elective courses.

The Dionisi family home in Teggiano, in the province of Salerno, Italy serves as their base in Europe for summer travel and vacations. This proves out her contention that you can only fully understand a culture if you travel.

Non Scholae — Sed Vitae

John Bonanno ’83, will probably be seen around Molloy more now that his daughter will be at here in September. He provided us with this update. “I am the Manager of Corporate Purchasing for DealerTrack, Inc. a technology company in Lake Success. Married to Josephine, we have three children, Stephanie 14, Vincent 12 and Julia 8. Stephanie will be starting Molloy in September, having won a scholarship to the school. I have been coaching CYO baseball for St. Kevin’s school in Flushing for the past 8 seasons, and coach for Bayside Little League’s summer baseball program. Also a freelance writer, I have been working on several projects that may hit the bookshelves soon.”

Laura Darcy ’05, a recent graduate from Boston College sent a report in from the field about her service work in the Dominican Republic. BC has supported a research project for the past six years involving the educational system there and for the past three years, Laura has been involved as a participant in the process which involves ten days on the ground and countless hours of preparation. Through her work she has met the Secretary of Education in the Dominican Republic, and worked with public and private schools there. This year she coordinated a charity drive effort with Mr. Santos and other Molloy faculty members resulting in the shipment of twenty-six, fifty pound suitcases full of school supplies, clothing and toys for the children in these schools. That’s 1,300 pounds of relief supplies hand carried by volunteers into the country. Laura is a living example of our motto in action. She is home for the summer Congratulations on this great work!

In Memoriam

Brian Foley wanted to remind the Molloy and the Marist community of the passing of Rich Kelly Class of ’75 from cancer on April 23, 2009.

Rich was one of the most active members of the Class of ’75 and was the president of the student government (SAC) in his senior year. He was an outstanding student and leader and participated in all aspects of life at Molloy (the Stanner, yearbook, SAC, Political Science Club) ; he was one of the most popular members of our class. After attending Columbia he considered becoming a Marist Brother and taught at a Marist high school in NJ while living in community. Throughout his life he loved History and Politics and was fluent in French. His passion for these interests all began while studying at Molloy, and is testament to the life-long influence and dedication of the teachers he enjoyed there (esp. Brothers John Klein and Rich Shea , Mr. Salmon and Mr. Diorio). He later went on to become a successful attorney as a corporate litigator for many prestigious firms. Many Stanners from ’75 reached out to Rich via phone and e-mail to comfort him during his illness. He lives on in our hearts and stands tall in our memories of Molloy.

A memorial service will be held this Saturday June 13 at 12 noon at

Our Lady of Mercy RC Church in Forest Hills
70-01 Kessel St (at 70th Ave.)
Flushing, NY 11375
(718) 268-6143

A reception for all friends and family will follow at the church. Feel free to join us.
Thanks, Brian Foley.

The 2009 Stanner Golf Classic has come to a successful end and the planning stages for the 24th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic are underway.

Photos by Francis X. Bailey ’75

William Johnson ’71 and Michael McGuire ’81 served as Chairman and Honorary Chairman. Both gentlemen did a great job in serving Molloy well. Non Scholae-Sed Vitae is practiced by both Bill and Michael.

A sold out crowd played under cloudy skies and everyone enjoyed the play of the course, the food and beverages, but most importantly the camaraderie that was shared among the alumni, parents and friends. Many business connections were made on the course.

A most touching part of the evening was a toast made by President Sherry to the golfers, thanking them for the success of the outing. John Sherry then introduced Hanna Ventura and Giancarlo Mayor-Valencia, the first recipients of the John Gibbons Memorial Scholarship and presented them with a Molloy Hat.

Hanna and Giancarlo with John Sherry. Photo: Francis X. Bailey ’75

A special thank you to the volunteers who came out to work the outing in particular Jim Kinnier, Joe Smith and AJ Power for all their hard work, for without them, this day would not be possible.

The success of this outing is made possible by the alumni and corporate golf and journal sponsors, donations, auction and the sale of raffle tickets. The winners of this year’s raffle were: 1st Prize — Jorge Acevedo, 2nd Prize — James Hartigan, 3rd Prize — Teresa-Marie Governale. All three winning tickets were sold by students. The student selling the winning ticket received a monetary prize.

Graduates come “Home” for Sr. Breakfast and their diplomas. The seniors returned to Molloy for the final act in the graduation exercises… picking up their actual diploma. Mr. Sherry greeted them, Brother Pat gave the invocation, the Alumni Office provided hats and paid for the breakfast and the faculty and staff served the meal. Brian Klimas served as MC for the event. Special thanks to Ms. Longerano and Mrs. Solari organizers of the gathering. And, a good time was had by all.

Faculty Spotlight — Brother Declan Celebrates 55 Years as a Marist Educator

Just when you thought you had heard everything there was to know about educator longevity, you receive a notice that Brother Declan Murray is celebrating his 55th year as a Marist Educator this year. A native of Philadelphia, he attended West Catholic School and remembers the day that one of the Christian brothers came to the school to talk about vocations. His close childhood friend suggested that the vocations director speak with Declan, and the dialog about his joining the order began. After a period of education and discernment, Declan realized that he was interested in religious life as a member of the Marist Brothers, where he found his spiritual home. He took the habit on July 26th 1951 and hasn’t looked back since. One of his earlier memories, prior to TV in the community was the singing that went on as the brothers did their chores and after meals. His fondest memories were of the Irish music.

His route to Molloy involved stops in Massachusetts, the Bronx, New York and Florida. He has worked on the maintenance staff at Esopus, taken care of chickens, cleaned the boilers and fed the coal furnace. He has taught a number of courses through his career including; Latin, Math Religion and describes himself as a “utility player”. While teaching at St. Helena’s he studied theology and education at Fordham. He earned his BA and MS degrees there.

Brother was instrumental in the retreat program at Esopus, worked on Sodality Retreats while in the Bronx and at Molloy, and remembers with an impish grin the work that he and Brother James Mahar did organizing the many retreats and outings in Esopus. His life as a brother, living in community with other Marists has taken him on a wondrous journey. The joy that he experiences in his life comes from the thousands of men and women he has taught and mentored along the way. His 58 years as a Marist Brother has been a life of true fraternity.

Thank you Brother Declan, your thirty-three years at Molloy and the thousands of young minds you have influenced are a tribute to the decision you made in 1951 to dedicate your life in the spirit of St. Marcellin Champagnat.

This week Mr. Sherry and Charlie Flood from the Alumni office had the privilege of visiting Br. Stephen Hanley, OSF ’47. At the recent St. Ann’s Communion breakfast we were informed that Brother Stephen, who was a St. Ann’s student from the class of 1947, never received his diploma. When classmates Jack Moran and Ed Gaughran found out about this, they asked if the school would provide him with a St. Ann’s diploma. Mr. Sherry agreed and our trip upstate to deliver the diploma along with a copy of his grade report was on. We had a wonderful lunch and visit with a wonderful Stanner who has dedicated his entire life to work as the bookkeeper for the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement — Graymoor. Congratulations, Brother Stephen.

Non Scholae — Sed Vitae —

In Memoriam

Please keep these Stanners and their families in your prayers this week as they mourn the loss of loved ones.

We received word earlier this week that Anthony Carriero, Class of 1958, passed away on May 30, 2009. Members of his class were notified by e-mail.

Bob Dittus ’81 called in to tell us of the passing of his mother, Jacqueline Dittus early Monday morning. Bob’s daughter and Mrs. Dittus’ granddaughter is Sharon Dittus ’10. Please keep this Stanner family in your prayers this week.

Once again for those from the Class of 1975 who did not get word as yet, Richard Kelly (Class of ’75) passed away a few weeks ago. According to his classmate, Kurt Schlegelmilch, MD, “Rich was an extremely amiable Stanner, and very well liked throughout the school back in the day. Many of us miss him.” We have heard from a number of his classmates sharing this same sentiment. Services will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Forest Hills (70-01 Kessel St.) on Saturday June 13th at 12 noon.

Prayer Requests

Please keep Fred Luhn’s ’84 mother Josephine Luhn, age 79, in your prayers as she begins her most important battle. Josephine goes in for a liver biopsy in 2 weeks to confirm a liver cancer diagnoses. Pray it’s negative!

Last Alumni Event of the Year — June 5th 2009 – Jessica Petschauer ’04 Presents Life’s Expressions in the Theater at Molloy

No stranger to our own little theater, Jessica Petschauer ’04 has generously offered the talents of her acting troupe for two performances of her newest work, Life’s Expressions. Having written produced and performed in this off-Broadway production with her three member cast, our students and alumni will have two opportunities to see this production on June 5th. The school only performance will be held during the school day, with the evening performance starting at 7:00 PM.

Ms. Mary Ann Safrey saw one of the off-Broadway performances and shared her thoughts with the Stanner E-News – Life’s Expressions is a smart, and often witty, scripted review of unexpected depth. Set in an art museum, it explores joy and heartache, the inevitably of growing older, and our relationship with art through the stages of our lives. Three spirited and touching performances are adeptly rendered in a little jewel of a show. Miss Petschauer’s production is a lovely slice of musical theater and satisfies on many levels.

Tickets will be available at the door: Students $5.00, Adults $10.00 and Children $3.00.

The seniors have rehearsed and rehearsed, and for good measure rehearsed again — they are ready! Their books have all been returned and Last night was the Graduation Liturgy. In his homily, Fr. Shannon ’76 referenced our 50th Anniversary Mass at St. Patrick’s, and many other highlights of the past four years. His words reached a maximum capacity community, once again demonstrating to the world that we are a Catholic, Marist high school. The choir, under the direction of Mr. Sheehan filled the church with wonderful music, making the evening a true celebration. The Champagnat awards were given after Mass, and we are certain that the reverie continued for many families of the graduates well into the evening.

Molloy Students in the Spotlight at MOMA

We received word from Ms. Dupre that a number of students attended a program sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. The student on the right, Karen Zhou is a Molloy sophomore who participated in a 16-week program at MOMA and curated an exhibition of NYC student artwork which opened Friday evening at an annex of the museum. The girl on the left, Navdep Kaur, also a Molloy student, submitted that photo and had it chosen to be exhibited from more than 300 submitted photographs. The photo selected was taken en route to the Taj Mahal — as you can see in the photo, she opted for the camel ride to the famous site. The Taj Mahal is considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Ottoman, Indian, and Islamic architectural styles.

Faculty Spotlight — Maureen Rosenbaum

Maureen Rosenbaum grew up in Queens, attended John Bowne High School, and has always been involved in athletics. She attended Queens College and received a BA in Physical Education and went on to Indiana State University where she received her MS in Athletic Administration. As an undergraduate she played Volleyball and Softball. While earning her Masters she had a teaching internship at the University Lab School. This experience encouraged great creativity and the development of innovative curriculum activities at all levels.

Upon her return to NY, she taught in both Private and Parochial schools. At the Lenox School she was both the Softball coach and the Athletic Director. When that school went through a merger, she opted to move on to the Convent of the Sacred Heart School where she worked for 8 years. When Molloy announced that it was going co-ed, she applied for a position and came on faculty in 2000 as a Physical Education and Health teacher.

“In the beginning”… there were a number of challenges that go along with any institutional change. First, there were the sports uniforms and all of the “differences between boys uniforms and girls uniforms…”. Once that was ironed out, there were the other “dress code, locker room and real estate issues that had to be addressed”. When the girls started here we nearly doubled the number of teams that needed practice space and game time. There were many scheduling issues, not to mention the establishment of relationships required to secure “home fields” and practice time for softball and volleyball teams. Maureen has worked around all of these issues with AD Mike McCleary, and will enter her 10th year at Molloy in the fall.

She enjoys the recent innovations in technology throughout the school, and uses the SmartBoard® in her health classes in a number of ways. This summer she wants to begin to develop a “social network” for the women athletes from Molloy and would like to host an alumnae event next year celebrating 10 Years of Women at Molloy. If there are any alumnae interested in helping out with this type of an event, please contact her at mrosembaum@molloyhs.org.

As she reflects on the past ten years, she is proud of the female athletes that have graduated and are coming through the program at the present time. There are a number of the women from Molloy that have made their mark on collegiate teams and she is confident that others will join their ranks in the coming years. She recalled a meeting with Angie Waterman this year, Roz Gold-Unwude’s return to work with the Girls Basketball team and the many “unbelievably talented and dedicated graduates that come back to visit and share their stories with her. In many ways, that is one of the best rewards any teacher can ask for.

As for the future, she claims to be a “perfectionist” and wants to continually develop the offerings for women at Molloy. “There is still work to be done.” She would like to see a program developed which will encourage a lifetime fitness orientation that will affect generations to come. “The female Stanners have made their mark on the NY athletic scene and we look forward to the development of many more elite athletes in the future.”

She lives on Long Island with her husband, another Athletic Director, her son and her daughter.

Non Scholae — Sed Vitae

We welcomed in the Class of 2009 this week at the final graduation rehearsal. They have made their mark on Molloy and will now go forth to nearly 100 different colleges and universities to continue their studies. In my brief comments to this exceptional group of Stanners I invoked the memory of Brother Terence Jones ’36 and asked God to bless all Stanners — Especially the 414 members of the Class of 2009.

We heard from Arasu Jambukeswaran ’92 this week. He attended the recent Diorio dinner and asked if there were any Stanners in the NY Real Estate industry with knowledge of rental apartments on the Upper East side of Manhattan. If you know of a good 1 bedroom apartment, he would like to hear from you… he can be reached at arasujam@yahoo.com . Arasu will start his new assignment with the UN as a Best Practices Officer. Congrats on the appointment, Arasu!
