Stanner Business Connection — Rob Hines ’08

Rob began his career in “Balloons” at “Kidz Kraze Entertainment” while still a freshman at Molloy. His DJ business — “In the Mix Entertainment” came later. Now, as a sophomore at Iona, he manages both of his businesses along with his cousin and his sister, Brianna ’10. It is a true family business and it helps him to manage the room and board costs at Iona where he carries a double major in finance and accounting.

The favorite part of his day is when he shows up at a party to DJ and then breaks out the balloons to get the party going. He is a true entertainer with a dual set of skills. The DJ work launched in 2008 and has grown through his association with Iona and through word of mouth promotion.

Anyone attending the Hall of Fame Dinner and Reunion on November 7th will see him at work on the stage as he serves up music for the evening to an audience of Stanners.

Rob is interested in working with Stanners and Stanner families as they plan their family parties and corporate events. One of his specialties is working “Sweet Sixteen” parties. He can be reached at: rhines1@iona.edu . When you e-mail him to make your reservation, be sure to let him know that you are a Stanner.

Catholic School Night at Citi-Field…

The weather was not perfect, but the attitude was outstanding… more than 125 Stanners gathered at Citi Field on Wednesday night to watch the Mets battle St. Louis 11 - 0! It was truly amazing. In addition to the game, there was “the great cannoli hunt” resulting in the most colorful and tasty find of the evening… in Met’s colors, too - go figure!

Wearing my Molloy Alumni shirt, the gentleman at the gate introduced himself as “Molloy - Class of ’80”, Travis ‘09 and Rosie the photographer came up to the Molloy section to visit, and, as I was leaving, a woman stopped me and asked, “Is that the College or Molloy High School?” As it turns out, her brother went to Molloy. My brother, Jim, a St. Dominic’s graduate commented… “You guys are Everywhere!” No truer words have ever been spoken.

Momentum Repertory Company Presents:
THE UNLIKELY ADVENTURE OF RACE McCLOUD, PRIVATE EYE

Written and Directed by Tom Hoefner ’96

The Unlikely Adventure of Race McCloud, Private Eye is a comic-book style comedy/adventure about the second-most clueless detective in Westside City. When his secret-agent family goes missing, it is up to Race and his 15 year-old super-genius niece Cookie to find them. Their search takes them around the world, and they soon face off against a masked vigilante, vampires, werewolves, ancient Egyptian curses, “Perfect” Troopers, and more as they hunt for their missing relatives.

Writer/Director Tom Hoefner first created Race McCloud over ten years ago, as the main character of a series of Murder Mystery Dinners that he began writing while a student at St. Joseph’s College, Brooklyn, at the age of 18. Over time, he has further developed Race and his world in stories designed to be told through a wide array of media, including film, comics, and audio drama. For this, Race’s definitive adventure, he has brought the detective back to where it all began, and to where he truly belongs: the stage.

Race features an original score by composer Andrew Barkan (Conlag, Noor, ads for Sprint), choreography by popular Broadway Dance Center instructor Lainie Munro (Hope and Faith w/Kelly Ripa, Oklahoma! w/Rue McClanahan), fight choreography by Eugene Solfanelli (Broken Canyon), sound design by FringeNYC veteran Geoff Moonen, and promotional artwork by cartoonist and graphic designer Kev Gillespie (www.rhcomics.com). The cast combines both young and established talent. Tom Brown as Race and Fiona Kearns as Cookie headline a group that features Ms. Munro, Mr. Solfanelli, Cas Marino (Torch Song Trilogy, Black Henna Productions), Jade Rothman, Adam Mace, Kimberly Yates, Jeremy Lardieri, Kiley McDonald, Brendan Walsh, and Ted Frank.

Mindy Smith and Jackie Jacobi founded Momentum Repertory Company in 2008 with the purpose of providing young artists a safe haven in which to develop their creative voices. Over the past year they have produced revivals of Godspell and Barefoot in the Park as well as a very successful reading series. Race McCloud is their first production of a full-length original work.

The New York International Fringe Festival - FringeNYC
A production of The Present Company
August 14th - 30th
Tickets: $15. For tickets visit www.FringeNYC.org

Thank you Brother Roy ’62

This year we bid farewell to Brother Roy George ’62, who, after 10 1/2 years as Principal has accepted the position of Vice Provincial of the Marist Brothers for North America.

We held a bon voyage party for Brother Roy this week and in his remarks, he commented on the three events that had the greatest impact on him during his tenure as Principal.

First there was 9/11. He recounted the story of sitting with one student at dismissal time. He was the last student to go home that day. He recounted how the conversations he had with Chris Waters that day will be on his heart forever. It was a defining moment for him.

There was the process of taking Molloy Co-ed and the day the girls arrived at Molloy. He remembered the TV cameras and all of the attention we received that day.

Finally, there was the 50th Anniversary Celebration and our journey to St. Patrick’s Cathedral for Mass. His only request for our 50th Anniversary was to celebrate Mass as a Catholic, Marist Community. We did, and we did it with style and class.

There are many more memories of course; Mole Day celebrations, Walk-a-thons, the teaching of Chemistry and teaching in general and, of course, the students… his kids. They are the reason we exist.

We wish you well, Brother Roy as you begin your new role as Vice Provincial.

Faculty Spotlight — Brother Thomas Schady, FMS

Brother Thomas Schady, FMS, comes to Molloy from his most recent assignment as the Associate Superintendent of Schools for the Archdiocese of New York. He served in this capacity from 1992 through 2008 and has been on sabbatical this past year. Having supervised 55 archdiocesan high schools in ten counties, he is no stranger to our work here at Molloy.

Brother grew up in the Bronx and attended Mt. St Michael’s Academy where he first met the Marist Brothers. He was impressed by their dedication and caring and their commitment to the work of education. He left high school and started his Marist training. We have been fortunate to get to know Brother Thomas this past week as he started his meetings with the administration and faculty members.

During my session with him we discussed his new assignment. Though difficult to form a lasting impression in just one week, he did feel free to say that he was most impressed by the genuine caring and generosity of spirit he experienced. “Molloy has an Educationally Sound program and is certainly one of the outstanding examples of Catholic education in the region.” He said he was “genuinely delighted” to be a part of Molloy.

No stranger to the classroom, his early teaching assignments included St. Mary’s School in Poughkeepsie, St. Joseph’s School in Kingston, St. John’s School in Beacon, NY and St. Augustine’s School in Andover, MA.
Non Scholae — Sed Vitae

Tom Hill ’05 stopped in with a friend of his from Marist College. Tom is networking to find a job in Finance or Marketing and wants other Stanners to know that he is willing to start at the bottom and work his way up… We toured the school and had a great visit.

Gerald DeMeo ’69 called in to track down a couple of his classmates from the class of ’69… it seems he is considering another pilgrimage to Woodstock in honor of their visit there 40 years ago… I wonder how many of us claim to have been there vs. how many really did attend… and can remember…

Correction — Sean Tubridy ’01 sent in the following correction this week. My apologies to Michael 01’ and Anthony ’99 .

“FYI you published that Michael D’Annunzio 01 is pursuing a degree in nursing when in fact he graduated from NYU and is an energy trader at Bank of Montreal. His brother Anthony class of 1999 is pursuing nursing and is the one who Ms Gannon saw while he visited Molloy.”

A number of students and some of our more recent college graduates have stopped by looking for work opportunities. As you might expect, these are the best and brightest in the field, and they are willing workers. Let us know your staffing needs for this summer and we will make the Stanner Connection for you. Contact our office at: cflood@molloyhs.org .

Our students are looking for summer employment opportunities. In addition to the summer work, we have approximately 30 students interesting in internships in the science community. Lab work, research work and some project work tied to their involvement in Ms. Mallia’s Integrated Science Curriculum is of most interest to these young minds. They have a strong interest in medicine, genetics, bio-engineering and general engineering. If you have an interest in mentoring a Stanner thorough this process, please contact our office at: cflood@molloyhs.org .

Around the School

Regents week, reviews and loosened tie restrictions are all in vogue this week around the school. Mr. Stolze held his annual pot-luck supper review, and mini sessions and coaching classes are being held throughout the building. The good news is that this is one of the coolest regents weeks teachers can remember. Next week we will wind down the year with the last test on Thursday. Another year behind us… everyone moves up a notch and the incoming freshmen are wondering what to expect. Many of them will find out when they arrive at freshman camp for their orientation to Molloy.

Coach Curran will host his basketball camp here this summer, and people will be in and out preparing for next year. I have heard about a wide variety of summer travel plans and for the most part, I will be home in Nashville figuring out how to make it all happen again next year. With one more E-News to go, my attentions will turn to the new web site launch in the fall.

Faculty Update — Jeff Gallagher ’88

Jeff Gallagher has been accepted to participate in the nationally recognized Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Institute, a field course in American History focused on reviewing first hand artifacts and reference materials. He will be touring a number of historical sites in the Williamsburg region. He is especially interested in working with teachers from around America studying early American history. Part of this experience requires him to return to Molloy and share his studies with the History department. In this way our investment in this program will pay additional dividends as the new information and techniques are shared with his department.

Correction: In the recent Spotlight on Palmina Dionisi, I reported her husband as Joseph… He informed me through Palmina that his name is “Carlo”… my apologies to Carlo.

Non Scholae — Sed Vitae

Ms. Gannon was out at Louie’s Restaurant in Port Washington the other day and met Michael D’Annunzio ’01. He graduated from Seton Hall with a degree in Public Relations and Restaurant Management and is now in his second year at Molloy College in pursuit of a degree in Nursing.

Kevin Ropenus ’90 and his wife of one year Gail stopped by to see us while on vacation in NY. Kevin has worked for Walgreen’s Drugs as a store manager. After nine years with the company he was able to open his own store in N. Olmsted, Ohio. Kevin’s fondest memory of Molloy was the 1988 City Championship Soccer team. He sends greetings out to all of his teammates and classmates. Now that he has entered the computer generation he promises to stay in touch. Kevin attended St. John’s University after Molloy where he majored in Government and Political Science.

Amanda Boggiano ’06 stopped in to visit with some of her former teachers and while she was here she visited the Alumni Office. In fact, she was the inspiration for the lead article in this week’s E-News. A senior at Franklin @ Marshall College majoring in Anthropology, she is turning her energy to the pursuit of employment at the end of her college experience. We discussed her recent, three-week trip to China; walking the Great Wall, visiting the Terra Cotta Soldiers and seeing the crescent lake in the Gobi Desert. She has also served in leadership positions with her sorority and, as a result, understands the politics of higher education. In addition to her life guard skills, she has worked in retail and understands working with the public.

In Memoriam

We have learned from Mr. Dombrowski that Fr. Peter Purpura’s ’99 brother, Mark passed away recently. Please keep this family in your prayers as they mourn his loss.

Henry Villadiego ’90 sent in the following notice concerning Salvatore J. Martino ’43 of Pleasant Plains who passed away on March 12, 2009. Salvatore was the beloved husband of Barbara, loving father of Janet Piccolomini and Kerry Johnston. He was my wife’s uncle by marriage. When uncle Salvatore heard that Henry went to Molloy he insisted on meeting me right away, being a St. Ann’s alum himself. He had a great affinity for his High School and is dearly missed.

Please keep this family and all Stanners who have experienced a loss this in your prayers each day. God Bless all Stanners.

Women of Molloy Roundtable Report

The Alumni Association hosted a panel of female graduates from a variety of classes to discuss ways to involve the women of Molloy in the activities of the Stanner Alumni Association. Our first two classes of female graduates have moved beyond their college experience and are currently working in a wide variety of professions, with a good number of them now pursuing graduate degrees. First on their list of topics was the value that the Stanner Alumni Association could bring to them as a networking mechanism. There was a discussion of the upcoming 5th Anniversary in November, and the potential to focus a celebration around 10 Years of Girls Athletics at Molloy. Coach Maureen Rosenbaum suggested a ten-year reunion for all of the women who have participated in the athletic program. We will work on that with the athletic department and coaches to see when an event like this might occur.

Special thanks to Melissa Stathes for organizing this event. Though unable to attend herself due to a prior academic commitment, she did encourage participation from across the years. The evening opened a dialog which we will continue as the event schedule for 2009-2010 unfolds. Thanks again to Mary Pat Gannon for attending this event and supporting the work of our Association and for her help organizing the Senior Breakfast.

Auction Lunch with NYC Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly ’59

Michael Connolly ’90 recently had lunch with several of his family members and NYC Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly ’59 at the Harvard Club in NYC. Mike purchased this auction item at the 23rd Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic. He wrote, “It was an afternoon of good food, and even better company and conversation. The Commissioner was a pleasure to meet and was a very gracious host for Mike’s family and friend who attended.”

Faculty Celebrates Br. Declan’s 55th Anniversary as a Marist Educator

Tuesday night, a dinner was held in celebration of Brother Declan Murray’s 55th year as a Marist educator. Faculty, friends, former students from St. Helena’s all turned out at Alba’s for the celebration. Mr. Sherry presented Brother with a Certificate of Appreciation for his time here at Molloy. Former students came in to sit with Brother and to reminisce about his work at St. Helena’s. Congratulations Brother, and as only Lou Santos could say, “we look forward to the next 55 years.”

Around the School

Books Collected, Reviews Under Way, Regents soon to Follow!

The books are on their carts - all counted and collected
Reviews are under way - content dots to be connected
Regents tests are in the safe - no rule to be neglected
The countdown has begun — summer sun to be reflected…

Faculty Spotlight — Palmina Dionisi

Palmina Dionisi teaches Italian… no surprises there. The story behind her teaching Italian at Molloy has a few twists and turns along the way, however. Her parents grew up and were married in Italy. As Palmina so eloquently states, she was “made in Italy, born in the USA”. She grew up in a three family home on Jackson Street in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and she is a New Yorker through and through. The other families in the house included her three male cousins, and, with few female playmates on the street, she grew up playing stickball with the boys. When I asked her about living anywhere other than NYC she was quick to say, “I can’t live anywhere without great bagels and the New York Yankees.” It seems NYC life and sports are in her blood.

She attended St. Francis of Paola and St. Adalbert’s schools in Brooklyn growing up, and then attended Grover Cleveland High School. This break in her Catholic school experience ended when she enrolled at St. John’s University where she received her degree in Italian and Secondary Education. “It was great to return to a school where the ethics were clear and the teaching was outstanding.” It was like coming home.

Palmina did her student teaching at Molloy under the direction of her mentor Francine Bonventre. After St. John’s she moved on to Rutgers University where she took graduate courses. While she studied, she taught undergraduates Italian. Between her first and second year there she went to Urbino, Italy as a teacher. She toured, taught and lived as an Italian for six weeks that summer. Her love of travel and life-long learning comes from that experience. During her second year, she took a call from Molloy concerning a teaching position. She interviewed but as it was for Spanish, a language she now teaches at Molloy. She did not get that particular position. Instead, she worked for the Port Authority of NY as a “Gateway Receptionist”. While at Rutgers she met her husband Joseph, a Supervising Language Specialist with the F.B.I. She has two sons, Vincent who attends school at Our Lady of Hope and Joseph, a sophomore at Molloy.

In 1987 she received another call from Bob Jones for a teaching position at Molloy; this time the fit was perfect — Italian. It has been twenty-three years, and upon reflection, she has no regrets. One of the attributes she has come to respect at Molloy is the way we teach our students. Everything is tied to faith, family, values, and integrity. These are the “positive constants” you come to expect from a Stanner.

When asked what she would like to see change here she thought for a minute and then shared. She would like to see more rigor in our senior year program. “We should incorporate a large lecture format class in preparation for the college setting. Along with that class we should teach note taking and summarizing skills in every class. Another offering in the life skills area might include personal finance, budgeting and improved consumer skills including making travel reservations, local trip planning and time management.” Preparing them for their next great adventure is part of our responsibility if we are to live up to our motto, Non Scholae Sed Vitae.

As we closed the interview we talked about the future of Molloy. She wants to see us maintain our technological leadership and test new methodologies. On-line education opportunities should be opened up to our students — especially in the area of elective courses.

The Dionisi family home in Teggiano, in the province of Salerno, Italy serves as their base in Europe for summer travel and vacations. This proves out her contention that you can only fully understand a culture if you travel.

Non Scholae — Sed Vitae

John Bonanno ’83, will probably be seen around Molloy more now that his daughter will be at here in September. He provided us with this update. “I am the Manager of Corporate Purchasing for DealerTrack, Inc. a technology company in Lake Success. Married to Josephine, we have three children, Stephanie 14, Vincent 12 and Julia 8. Stephanie will be starting Molloy in September, having won a scholarship to the school. I have been coaching CYO baseball for St. Kevin’s school in Flushing for the past 8 seasons, and coach for Bayside Little League’s summer baseball program. Also a freelance writer, I have been working on several projects that may hit the bookshelves soon.”

Laura Darcy ’05, a recent graduate from Boston College sent a report in from the field about her service work in the Dominican Republic. BC has supported a research project for the past six years involving the educational system there and for the past three years, Laura has been involved as a participant in the process which involves ten days on the ground and countless hours of preparation. Through her work she has met the Secretary of Education in the Dominican Republic, and worked with public and private schools there. This year she coordinated a charity drive effort with Mr. Santos and other Molloy faculty members resulting in the shipment of twenty-six, fifty pound suitcases full of school supplies, clothing and toys for the children in these schools. That’s 1,300 pounds of relief supplies hand carried by volunteers into the country. Laura is a living example of our motto in action. She is home for the summer Congratulations on this great work!

In Memoriam

Brian Foley wanted to remind the Molloy and the Marist community of the passing of Rich Kelly Class of ’75 from cancer on April 23, 2009.

Rich was one of the most active members of the Class of ’75 and was the president of the student government (SAC) in his senior year. He was an outstanding student and leader and participated in all aspects of life at Molloy (the Stanner, yearbook, SAC, Political Science Club) ; he was one of the most popular members of our class. After attending Columbia he considered becoming a Marist Brother and taught at a Marist high school in NJ while living in community. Throughout his life he loved History and Politics and was fluent in French. His passion for these interests all began while studying at Molloy, and is testament to the life-long influence and dedication of the teachers he enjoyed there (esp. Brothers John Klein and Rich Shea , Mr. Salmon and Mr. Diorio). He later went on to become a successful attorney as a corporate litigator for many prestigious firms. Many Stanners from ’75 reached out to Rich via phone and e-mail to comfort him during his illness. He lives on in our hearts and stands tall in our memories of Molloy.

A memorial service will be held this Saturday June 13 at 12 noon at

Our Lady of Mercy RC Church in Forest Hills
70-01 Kessel St (at 70th Ave.)
Flushing, NY 11375
(718) 268-6143

A reception for all friends and family will follow at the church. Feel free to join us.
Thanks, Brian Foley.

The 2009 Stanner Golf Classic has come to a successful end and the planning stages for the 24th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic are underway.

William Johnson ’71 and Michael McGuire ’81 served as Chairman and Honorary Chairman. Both gentlemen did a great job in serving Molloy well. Non Scholae-Sed Vitae is practiced by both Bill and Michael.

A sold out crowd played under cloudy skies and everyone enjoyed the play of the course, the food and beverages, but most importantly the camaraderie that was shared among the alumni, parents and friends. Many business connections were made on the course.

A most touching part of the evening was a toast made by President Sherry to the golfers, thanking them for the success of the outing. John Sherry then introduced Hanna Ventura and Giancarlo Mayor-Valencia, the first recipients of the John Gibbons Memorial Scholarship and presented them with a Molloy Hat.

A special thank you to the volunteers who came out to work the outing in particular Jim Kinnier, Joe Smith and AJ Power for all their hard work, for without them, this day would not be possible.

The success of this outing is made possible by the alumni and corporate golf and journal sponsors, donations, auction and the sale of raffle tickets. The winners of this year’s raffle were: 1st Prize — Jorge Acevedo, 2nd Prize — James Hartigan, 3rd Prize — Teresa-Marie Governale. All three winning tickets were sold by students. The student selling the winning ticket received a monetary prize.

Mark your calendar for Monday, May 3, 2010 for the 24th Annual Jim Kinnier Stanner Golf Classic and be a part of the fun.

Graduates come “Home” for Sr. Breakfast and their diplomas. The seniors returned to Molloy for the final act in the graduation exercises… picking up their actual diploma. Mr. Sherry greeted them, Brother Pat gave the invocation, the Alumni Office provided hats and paid for the breakfast and the faculty and staff served the meal. Brian Klimas served as MC for the event. Special thanks to Ms. Longerano and Mrs. Solari organizers of the gathering. And, a good time was had by all.

Faculty Spotlight — Brother Declan Celebrates 55 Years as a Marist Educator

Just when you thought you had heard everything there was to know about educator longevity, you receive a notice that Brother Declan Murray is celebrating his 55th year as a Marist Educator this year. A native of Philadelphia, he attended West Catholic School and remembers the day that one of the Christian brothers came to the school to talk about vocations. His close childhood friend suggested that the vocations director speak with Declan, and the dialog about his joining the order began. After a period of education and discernment, Declan realized that he was interested in religious life as a member of the Marist Brothers, where he found his spiritual home. He took the habit on July 26th 1951 and hasn’t looked back since. One of his earlier memories, prior to TV in the community was the singing that went on as the brothers did their chores and after meals. His fondest memories were of the Irish music.

His route to Molloy involved stops in Massachusetts, the Bronx, New York and Florida. He has worked on the maintenance staff at Esopus, taken care of chickens, cleaned the boilers and fed the coal furnace. He has taught a number of courses through his career including; Latin, Math Religion and describes himself as a “utility player”. While teaching at St. Helena’s he studied theology and education at Fordham. He earned his BA and MS degrees there.

Brother was instrumental in the retreat program at Esopus, worked on Sodality Retreats while in the Bronx and at Molloy, and remembers with an impish grin the work that he and Brother James Mahar did organizing the many retreats and outings in Esopus. His life as a brother, living in community with other Marists has taken him on a wondrous journey. The joy that he experiences in his life comes from the thousands of men and women he has taught and mentored along the way. His 58 years as a Marist Brother has been a life of true fraternity.

Thank you Brother Declan, your thirty-three years at Molloy and the thousands of young minds you have influenced are a tribute to the decision you made in 1951 to dedicate your life in the spirit of St. Marcellin Champagnat.

This week Mr. Sherry and Charlie Flood from the Alumni office had the privilege of visiting Br. Stephen Hanley, OSF ’47. At the recent St. Ann’s Communion breakfast we were informed that Brother Stephen, who was a St. Ann’s student from the class of 1947, never received his diploma. When classmates Jack Moran and Ed Gaughran found out about this, they asked if the school would provide him with a St. Ann’s diploma. Mr. Sherry agreed and our trip upstate to deliver the diploma along with a copy of his grade report was on. We had a wonderful lunch and visit with a wonderful Stanner who has dedicated his entire life to work as the bookkeeper for the Franciscan Friars of the Atonement — Graymoor. Congratulations, Brother Stephen.

Non Scholae — Sed Vitae —

Fred Luhn, Class of 1984 and Jacqueline are expecting their first son on or about June 21st, 2009. Fred is a salesman at Star Toyota in Bayside, NY and Jackie is the dealership’s internet sales representative.

Joe Mendola ’80 has announced his candidacy for the position of NYC Comptroller 2009. He has received numerous party endorsements in his pursuit of this office. Mendola, a Columbia Law School graduate and a lifelong New Yorker is a financial risk manager and compliance specialist. He lives in Greenwich Village. Brother James Norton forwarded the notice of his candidacy to the Alumni office for posting in the Stanner E-News. For more information please go to: www.joemendola.com

In Memoriam

Please keep these Stanners and their families in your prayers this week as they mourn the loss of loved ones.

We received word earlier this week that Anthony Carriero, Class of 1958, passed away on May 30, 2009. Members of his class were notified by e-mail.

Bob Dittus ’81 called in to tell us of the passing of his mother, Jacqueline Dittus early Monday morning. Bob’s daughter and Mrs. Dittus’ granddaughter is Sharon Dittus ’10. Please keep this Stanner family in your prayers this week.

Once again for those from the Class of 1975 who did not get word as yet, Richard Kelly (Class of ’75) passed away a few weeks ago. According to his classmate, Kurt Schlegelmilch, MD, “Rich was an extremely amiable Stanner, and very well liked throughout the school back in the day. Many of us miss him.” We have heard from a number of his classmates sharing this same sentiment. Services will be held at Our Lady of Mercy Church in Forest Hills (70-01 Kessel St.) on Saturday June 13th at 12 noon.

Prayer Requests

Please keep Fred Luhn’s ’84 mother Josephine Luhn, age 79, in your prayers as she begins her most important battle. Josephine goes in for a liver biopsy in 2 weeks to confirm a liver cancer diagnoses. Pray it’s negative!

Last Alumni Event of the Year — June 5th 2009 - Jessica Petschauer ’04 Presents Life’s Expressions in the Theater at Molloy

No stranger to our own little theater, Jessica Petschauer ’04 has generously offered the talents of her acting troupe for two performances of her newest work, Life’s Expressions. Having written produced and performed in this off-Broadway production with her three member cast, our students and alumni will have two opportunities to see this production on June 5th. The school only performance will be held during the school day, with the evening performance starting at 7:00 PM.

Ms. Mary Ann Safrey saw one of the off-Broadway performances and shared her thoughts with the Stanner E-News - Life’s Expressions is a smart, and often witty, scripted review of unexpected depth. Set in an art museum, it explores joy and heartache, the inevitably of growing older, and our relationship with art through the stages of our lives. Three spirited and touching performances are adeptly rendered in a little jewel of a show. Miss Petschauer’s production is a lovely slice of musical theater and satisfies on many levels.

Tickets will be available at the door: Students $5.00, Adults $10.00 and Children $3.00.

Around the School — It’s Graduation Week

The seniors have rehearsed and rehearsed, and for good measure rehearsed again — they are ready! Their books have all been returned and Last night was the Graduation Liturgy. In his homily, Fr. Shannon ’76 referenced our 50th Anniversary Mass at St. Patrick’s, and many other highlights of the past four years. His words reached a maximum capacity community, once again demonstrating to the world that we are a Catholic, Marist high school. The choir, under the direction of Mr. Sheehan filled the church with wonderful music, making the evening a true celebration. The Champagnat awards were given after Mass, and we are certain that the reverie continued for many families of the graduates well into the evening.

Molloy Students in the Spotlight at MOMA

We received word from Ms. Dupre that a number of students attended a program sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art in NYC. The student on the right, Karen Zhou is a Molloy sophomore who participated in a 16-week program at MOMA and curated an exhibition of NYC student artwork which opened Friday evening at an annex of the museum. The girl on the left, Navdep Kaur, also a Molloy student, submitted that photo and had it chosen to be exhibited from more than 300 submitted photographs. The photo selected was taken en route to the Taj Mahal — as you can see in the photo, she opted for the camel ride to the famous site. The Taj Mahal is considered the finest example of Mughal architecture, a style that combines elements from Persian, Ottoman, Indian, and Islamic architectural styles.

Faculty Spotlight — Maureen Rosenbaum

Maureen Rosenbaum grew up in Queens, attended John Bowne High School, and has always been involved in athletics. She attended Queens College and received a BA in Physical Education and went on to Indiana State University where she received her MS in Athletic Administration. As an undergraduate she played Volleyball and Softball. While earning her Masters she had a teaching internship at the University Lab School. This experience encouraged great creativity and the development of innovative curriculum activities at all levels.

Upon her return to NY, she taught in both Private and Parochial schools. At the Lenox School she was both the Softball coach and the Athletic Director. When that school went through a merger, she opted to move on to the Convent of the Sacred Heart School where she worked for 8 years. When Molloy announced that it was going co-ed, she applied for a position and came on faculty in 2000 as a Physical Education and Health teacher.

“In the beginning”… there were a number of challenges that go along with any institutional change. First, there were the sports uniforms and all of the “differences between boys uniforms and girls uniforms…”. Once that was ironed out, there were the other “dress code, locker room and real estate issues that had to be addressed”. When the girls started here we nearly doubled the number of teams that needed practice space and game time. There were many scheduling issues, not to mention the establishment of relationships required to secure “home fields” and practice time for softball and volleyball teams. Maureen has worked around all of these issues with AD Mike McCleary, and will enter her 10th year at Molloy in the fall.

She enjoys the recent innovations in technology throughout the school, and uses the SmartBoard® in her health classes in a number of ways. This summer she wants to begin to develop a “social network” for the women athletes from Molloy and would like to host an alumnae event next year celebrating 10 Years of Women at Molloy. If there are any alumnae interested in helping out with this type of an event, please contact her at mrosembaum@molloyhs.org.

As she reflects on the past ten years, she is proud of the female athletes that have graduated and are coming through the program at the present time. There are a number of the women from Molloy that have made their mark on collegiate teams and she is confident that others will join their ranks in the coming years. She recalled a meeting with Angie Waterman this year, Roz Gold-Unwude’s return to work with the Girls Basketball team and the many “unbelievably talented and dedicated graduates that come back to visit and share their stories with her. In many ways, that is one of the best rewards any teacher can ask for.

As for the future, she claims to be a “perfectionist” and wants to continually develop the offerings for women at Molloy. “There is still work to be done.” She would like to see a program developed which will encourage a lifetime fitness orientation that will affect generations to come. “The female Stanners have made their mark on the NY athletic scene and we look forward to the development of many more elite athletes in the future.”

She lives on Long Island with her husband, another Athletic Director, her son and her daughter.

Non Scholae — Sed Vitae

We welcomed in the Class of 2009 this week at the final graduation rehearsal. They have made their mark on Molloy and will now go forth to nearly 100 different colleges and universities to continue their studies. In my brief comments to this exceptional group of Stanners I invoked the memory of Brother Terence Jones ’36 and asked God to bless all Stanners — Especially the 414 members of the Class of 2009.

We heard from Arasu Jambukeswaran ’92 this week. He attended the recent Diorio dinner and asked if there were any Stanners in the NY Real Estate industry with knowledge of rental apartments on the Upper East side of Manhattan. If you know of a good 1 bedroom apartment, he would like to hear from you… he can be reached at arasujam@yahoo.com . Arasu will start his new assignment with the UN as a Best Practices Officer. Congrats on the appointment, Arasu!

This three-day week offered us an interesting challenge - there was so much to do in so little time. We will say good-bye to our seniors, practice for graduation and welcome them into the Stanner Alumni Association within then next two weeks. I speak with seniors every day about their plans and “next steps”. I assure you that hope is alive as these wonderful young men and women enter the next phase of their life — college. Their plans are vast and varied. I welcome them into our Alumni Association with the hope that they will begin to appreciate their time here and be willing to stay in touch with us as they make new friends and build new relationships. I am certain that most will. In the spirit of our prayer each morning I ask every Stanner to take a minute to ask God’s blessing on them, St. Marcellin to keep their minds open and St. Ann to keep them safe.

Diorio 50th — An Outstanding Evening

What a way to start the 51st year of any career… surrounded by family, friends, colleagues, good food and a biopic video that will play in the “House of Diorio” for many years. More than 200 gathered to celebrate John Diorio’s career and to hear from the man himself what Molloy has meant to him these past 50 years.

Upcoming Alumni Events

Cyber Networking Opportunity

For the past six months we have been working on a new web environment which will coordinate all of the existing Molloy websites into one new look. It is scheduled to launch this September. We are now in the final stages of loading in school information, sports, alumni and networking tools as we wind down the school year.

One of the new features of the website will be in the alumni section. It offers any Stanner the opportunity to post a business card ad with a brief description of the work they do, identified by industry. The card, when clicked, will automatically link to an e-mail function for communication and, if you have a corporate website, it will take the viewer to your site for additional information. The cost for this service is $100.00 per year. In order to participate in this program, send two copies of your business card, the link to your company website if you have one, and your e-mail address along with your check for $100.00 made out to Archbishop Molloy High School to: Archbishop Molloy High School, Attn: Charlie Flood, 83-53 Manton Street, Briarwood, NY 11435. The service will go live in September and will remain on line through August 2010.

Around the School — Faculty Spotlight — Charlie Flood ’68

Born into the post WWII Quonset Huts of Canarsie, Brooklyn, Charlie spent his early years there and in the Pomonok Houses near Parsons Boulevard. When it was time to enter elementary school, his family moved to Hicksville, where he attended Holy Family School. With few options for Catholic high schools around, Charlie decided to return to Queens to attend Molloy.

As a LIRR commuter along with about 25 other Stanners there were many days that “the train was late”. According to the Dean of Discipline at the time, we were informed that - “there were earlier trains available”. And so, the Hicksvillians spent many an afternoon in detention. And then there were the return trips down the hill to Jamaica Station with Mr., Salmon. He taught us more than History on those ten-minute jaunts. As a member of SAC, and a few other clubs, Charlie learned about how things got done, and who the workers were that made things happen. According to Mr. Diorio, we were “the best class ever”, and we claim that title today. The one true leader of the pack was our legendary leader, Nick Pavona.

After Molloy he attended SUATC Farmingdale where he earned an Associates Degree in Pre-Social work, followed by a B.A. in Sociology, a B.S. in Education and an M.S. in Education from Oswego State. After three years as a tenured elementary classroom teacher he left the classroom to work in the textbook industry as a salesman, manager and consultant. He worked for three companies in thirteen years, ending his corporate career in Nashville, TN as Director of Abingdon Press. He opened Synergetic Publications, Inc, a publishing and consulting firm in 1988 and has served as a book and artist agent, private label publisher and professional speaker and international trainer in the accounting industry ever since. This part of his career has taken him around the world and has expanded his network to include friends on four continents and more than 35 countries.

When Molloy was looking to energize the 50th Anniversary campaign, Mr. Sherry called Charlie to see if he would consider coming on staff as Director of Alumni Relations. The answer was easy — Yes. Charlie has ramped up our electronic communications program, instituted the weekly Stanner E-News, and, since January 2009 has begun his work with the Fund for Molloy (the former Annual Fund). He will work this fall to successfully close out the $8,000,000.00 Stanners for Life scholarship and endowment campaign. “Returning to Molloy has re-affirmed my lifelong belief that, you can go home… if home involves Molloy.”

St. Ann’s Corner

Well, the men of St. Ann’s have been talking… especially the boy’s from ’52. I heard from John Walsh ’52 this week and learned that he served in the Air Force, became a trained engineer, attended law school and moved on to the practice of law with the FAA. In his spare time had four children who have provided him with nine grandchildren… his best one liner about grandchildren was that there were two fabulous things about having grandchildren…. Taillights! Thanks for the call, John.

Non Scholae — Sed Vitae

Stanner Richard Karsten summed up the latest alumni gathering best -

“A packed house, generations of Stanners, a common spirit, good food and hundreds of smiles….and-you-are-there.

I just wanted to congratulate you all for putting on a terrific Stanner event on Tuesday night. The spirit of the night captured a very special Alumni moment…. what a fitting tribute to just one man who has broadcast the Stanner spirit well beyond the walls of the school and into the hearts and minds of thousands.

We had a great time! Thank you.”

A gentle reminder that one year ago this week Dr. Pat Murphy ’60 passed away. A Stanner, gifted professional, wonderful colleague and friend to all. Let us keep his family, and all Stanner families who have lost loved ones this year in our prayers this year.

Memorial Day Weekend — As we prepare for our picnics, family gatherings and the launch of summer activities, let us take time to remember those who have died in service to America. We have our freedom at a great cost. As I research Stanner heritage I surface great stories about Stanners who have served, and those who paid the ultimate price.

God Bless all Stanners in Service today.

Research indicates that there are Stanners from every class since 1934 in our data base looking for any excuse to party. Well, the date has been set, and a save the date card will be going out in June encouraging as many Stanners as possible to “come home for a night” to reminisce with old friends. If you are interested in serving on your class reunion committee and have not as yet let the Alumni office know, please contact Charlie Flood ’68 at 718-943-3151.

This year’s reunion will include the Hall of Fame Inductions at the Mass of Remembrance. We will celebrate our 25th and 50th Anniversary classes with special medallions and every class will have a reunion picture taken that night. Register on line for your class’ reunion… sign up to be on the organizing committee or just plan on coming out for an evening of food, folks and fun!

The Athletic Awards presentation was held last night. Spirits were high as student after student received their various awards. Athletic Director Mike McCleary kept the program moving. The highlight was the pictorial review of the year on the big screen. Proud parents snapped pictures and seniors reflected on their four years here at Molloy. Brother Pat Hogan opened the event with a prayer for all athletes and you could hear his voice crackle with bittersweet pride as he mentioned the seniors. This was the seventh time this event has been held at Molloy. Pictures are posted on the website and our two Outstanding Senior Athletes, Russ Smith and Janelle Boyd stood with Stanner Pride as they accepted their awards from President Sherry. The evening was a huge success!

Around the School

Finals, AP tests, Regents, Senior Breakfast and Graduation Practice are all in full swing. Baseball, Softball, Track, Golf and Handball seasons are all winding down for the year and we are looking forward to some outstanding results. More reports will be issued next week.

St. Ann’s Corner

John McGivney ’52 called in from his home in Knoxville, TN where he has lived for most of his career with the FBI. After graduation from St. Ann’s Academy, John went on to Iona College where he received his degree in History. He worked on many interesting cases including those surrounding the Hoffa investigations throughout his career. He was reminiscing with family members and wanted some pictures from his graduation yearbook to make his point… we were able to accommodate his request.

Ed Monahan St Ann’s ’47 — wrote in to let us know that he is still above ground….he enjoys the E-News as it brings back many good memories from St Ann’s. Just to make us all a bit jealous, he mentioned that he was leaving in the morning for Bermuda with his wife of 57 years for Mothers day…God Bless Ed

Mr. Lou Barbera ’76 was out on the town last week and watched as Kevin Schwab ’99 was recognized by the Josephine Foundation for his work in the arts. Kevin won the award for Best Adult Male Actor of the Year.

Last year Kevin played Groucho Marx for The Parkside Players. The reviews were very positive and word of his work circulated to The Josephine Foundation. The rest, as they say is now part of the record books. Congratulations, Kevin!

Not to be outdone by a Stanner from ’99, Rick Reilly ’63 sent a copy of the program from the Beijing Playhouse where he played the role of Capulet in Romeo and Juliet… Congrats on your stage career! Keep this thought in mind… we (Stanners) are everywhere… and, in places you would least suspect. Excellent work, Rick!

Remember When…

The year… 1989, the place, the floor of the stock exchange… the man in the middle… Tom Bradley ’74. Aaaah, those were the days… Tom was working the airline industry hard as it fluctuated all over the place…. Retired from the floor, we see Tom around school as he picks up and delivers his son Stephen to Molloy…

More than 230 golfers took to the courses at Plandome CC and North Hills CC in the mist on Monday morning in pursuit of the coveted plaque on the John Gibbons Memorial Trophy. Despite a slightly less than cooperative Mother Nature, their spirits could not be dampened and a good time was had by all. One of the high points of the dinner was when John Sherry introduced the winners of the first two Gibbons Memorial Scholarships. They were presented with Molloy caps and welcomed into the Stanner Family by many alumni and friends. As we packed up the signs and leftover “stuff” of the tournament we were all thankful for the generosity and support of our alumni, families and corporate sponsors.

As many in the greater NY area have noted, the only sports event this week was the Stanner Classic. Track has been active but no reports have come to this office this week other than the alumni reports below. We will keep you posted as the results and standings come in.

Around the School

Rock Aid — Rock Aid VI will begin tonight at 7 PM in the Curran Gym. Three rock bands, continuous music and the proceeds will support the Marist Mission work in the Philippines with the children and families surviving off the garbage dumps.

Masquerade Ball — An evening of fun, dancing and the “mystery of the Masquarade Ball”. Sponsored by the French Club, this night on the town will be one to remember.

AP Tests — The year end ritual of testing is well under way. This week we have the AP tests in the Curran Gymnasium, and for most of the seniors, the end of the year, and the end of their time at Molloy is in sight. Mixed emotions abound!

Faculty Spotlight — Mr. John Diorio — “I can’t believe it’s 50 Years”

The date: January 1960 — The place Manhattan — The event — A phone call from Brother Philip Damian at Archbishop Molloy HS. Mr. Diorio senior took the call and thought it was a joke until he realized that the call was for his son, our very own John Diorio… It went like this… “Are you still interested in a teaching position at Molloy?” The answer came quickly — Yes… a ten-minute interview held the next day was the start of a 50 year career at Molloy.

“Mr. D” was born in mid-town Manhattan into a working class family. He attended Epiphany Grammar School and LaSalle Academy. He continued his education earning a BA degree in Philosophy and Political Science from St. John’s University in Brooklyn in 1959. He then went on to Fordham University for his Masters degree in Education and Political Science in 1963.

A legend in the political arena, John worked on a number of campaigns including the John V. Lindsay Congressional and Mayoral Campaigns. He also served as a legislative aide to Lindsay. His other favorite campaigns included, Congressman Joseph Addabbo, Joseph Addabbo Jr., Andrew Cuomo, John Faso, John Sabini, Ralph Caso and William Cahn.

He is very proud of the number of quality guest speakers he has had come through his classroom. Congressman Joe Addabbo was a major influence on many of John’s early classes. In fact, Molloy was one of the congressman’s speaking engagements.

And then there is the infamous “face pat” — a sign of affection… His quote, “I’m Ready!” was a phrase he picked up from J. Edgar Hoover when he testified before Congress. The Director had the impunity to tell the committee — “I’m Ready”… this was passed on through John V. Lindsay and remains the kick off for most of his classes today.

When asked to talk about his best day at Molloy he said he “can’t find just one… there are many, many days while driving home I consider myself to be the luckiest man in the world to teach at Molloy.”

We talked a little about the colleagues he has worked with over the years. Brother Terence was one of the men I miss the most. He epitomized what I thought a Marist Brother should be. manly, strong, intelligent, engaged, giving and one heck of a tenor. One funny incident was the infamous stairway confrontation when Brother Terence almost threw the young teacher John Diorio into detention until he realized that he was actually on staff. There have been many Brothers John considers mentors and friends through the years. Brother James Damien, Brother Angus, Brother Victus all contributed to his development here at Molloy.

More of a traditionalist than innovator, John is recognized for his development of the Government courses at Molloy. They were a natural for Mr. D… his practical applications and the speakers he brought in made the Molloy version of American Government unique then and today. His work with the Political Science Club for almost thirty years was an area where education met the real world in his mind. Our kids interacted with real, working politicians.

When reflecting on his three daughters he comments on their basic goodness and how proud of them he is as mothers. His wife, Theresa was a stay at home mom and managed the home which freed John up to give his full attention to his work at Molloy and the various jobs he held outside of Molloy. She went to work as a nurse once her family was out on their own. Throughout his teaching career he has worked on campaigns or at his second job at Roosevelt Raceway to financially support his choice to be an educator and to stay at Molloy.

Recognizing that change is a constant, he singles out the one change at Molloy that had the most impact over his fifty year career - the decision to become a co-educational institution. “It fundamentally changed the nature of the school. The Social, Athletic and the Academic involvement all changed over a four year period of time. Our status as a male sports powerhouse in the City changed with the decrease in male enrollment. As the population changed, we became recognized for our Girl’s sports program throughout the region as well.

Molloy faces new challenges in the future. The demographics of our market have changed and we will have to continually adapt as Queens changes. The emphasis on the most academically oriented, college bound students has challenged Molloy’s heritage in some ways. We still attract many well rounded students but over a fifty year span, our focus on attracting the academically proficient students has required adjustments in other aspects of school life.

In all, as an honorary alumnus, and Stanner Hall of Fame member, Mr. Diorio has lived up to our motto — Non Scholae, Sed Vitae as few others have. He has dedicated fifty years to this school and our alumni.

John Nolty reminisces with John Sherry

Mr. John Nolty ’48 stopped in to the alumni office to visit. He was returning from his home on Marco Island, Florida to attend a family wedding. John spends about six months in Florida and six months here in NY. A retiree from Con Edison after a 40 year career there, he spends time traveling and visiting with friends and former colleagues. John started his career as an apprentice splicer and retired as a Division Manager. It seems you cannot hold a good Stanner down. John is shown here looking over yearbook photos with John Sherry, President of Molloy.

We also had a follow-up call from Mr. Bernie Hughes ’43. He called to check on the yearbook he left with us for the St. Ann’s Archives here in the office. We assured him that we would take good care of it and that it would be appreciated by generations of Stanners to come. Bernie spent most of his career as a stock broker after two brief stints working for the Diamond Match company and Schlitz Brewing. Bernie was one of the St. Ann’s graduates who recently attended the St. Ann’s Communion Breakfast.

Non Scholae — Sed Vitae

Reflections from a ’64 Stanner -
John Minett: ’64 (a long time ago, but just yesterday)

I am a member of that ancient class of 1964. When TVs were black and white without remote control and the world seemed a much simpler place. Molloy was strict, run by no-nonsense brothers who had the full and unquestioning support of parents.

All boys, you had to stand for your 20 minutes of lunch, and if you failed two subjects in a marking period you paid with two hours of study detention for the next marking period (no writing - you stood and studied in the cafeteria under the watchful eye of patrolling brothers). Work. Study. Respect.

I survived, graduated near the bottom of my class and went on to… Graduate from St Mary’s College in KS in 1969. Get a MS in English from CCNY. Further my education at St John’s U, Queens College and New York Law School (one year). Teach in a tough junior high school in Bed-Sty for 10 years. Enter the world of business (advertising, research, business development) where I remain today. Have three children who are now happy adults finding their own way. Be happily married for almost 40 years.

And much, much more.

I think often of Brother Peter Martin (Dean of Discipline) and Room 121 (Detention Room). I had some real character building experiences with that man in that room that have been a source of inner strength to me through the years.

Update: Jim McKay ’71 - My son Alexander (Sasha) is now 15 and an avid soccer player. I retired as a Deputy CFO at US DOJ and after several short assignments including one in Afghanistan. I am now co- leading a sweeping and comprehensive financial stewardship project in support of the Defense Logistics Agency. It’s a job for a 40 year old, but it uses all skills I learned in my life including my Molloy experience.

Track Alumni update — Congratulations Robert Pasqual ‘77 and Matt Swit ‘68 both earned age group awards in the 10k on Sunday. Long Island Marathon–10K Lauren Diffendale ’04 — Pace 7:05 — 3rd Place.

In Memoriam

We heard from Ronald Jost ’81 concerning the passing of John P. Brown ’81

I am sad to inform you of the death of John P. Brown on May 5, 2009. John was a Sergeant with the Amtrak P.D. Beloved son of Maureen and the late Barry. Loving brother of Robert and Dawn Brown, Eileen and Michael Treanor, Kathleen and William Meade, and Maureen Brown and Kelly Riley. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Reposing Leo F. Kearns Funeral Home, 61-40 Woodhaven Blvd., Rego Park on Thursday 7-9 P.M. and Friday 2-4 & 7-9 P.M. Funeral Mass Saturday, 10:00 A.M. St. Adalbert Church, Elmhurst.
We received word this week that Brother Roy George ’62 has been appointed to serve this Marist Brothers Province as Vice Provincial. Brother Roy has served as Principal here at Molloy for ten years. He has also taught AP Chemistry here during that time. When I asked him how he felt about his new assignment he expressed some mixed emotions. He enjoys his work with students and in the school environment very much and will miss day to day contact — “They energize me”. Speaking for myself, his daily reflections during Morning Prayer, his academic leadership as Principal, and his dedication as a Stanner to Molloy will be missed.

Brother Thomas Schady named Principal of Archbishop Molloy HS

As of July 1st, we will welcome our new Principal, Brother Thomas Schady. A Marist Brother for almost thirty-five years, Brother Thomas has completed graduate studies in Education, Educational Leadership, and Educational Administration from the University of San Diego, Manhattan College, Fordham University, and Loyola Marymount University. He holds a Master of Science in Library Science from C.W. Post and a Bachelor of Arts in English from Marist College.

For the past sixteen years, Brother Thomas has served as Associate Superintendent of Schools in the Archdiocese of New York. In this capacity, he provided academic direction and resources to 55 archdiocesan, independent, and parish high schools which served approximately 28,000 students. Prior to this archdiocesan position, Brother Thomas served for five years as Principal of Saint Agnes Boys High School in Manhattan. He has also served as a teacher and administrator in elementary schools in upstate New York and in Andover, Massachusetts.

Upcoming Alumni Events — GOLF, GOLF, GOLF

Monday, May 4th — the time … All Day Long…

As the saying goes, “A bad day on the golf course beats a great day at the office…”

Monday will bring out the competitive nature in approximately 250 Stanners, friends and family at the 23rd Annual Jim Kinnier — Stanner Golf Classic. This event is Sold Out as of today and the dinner will be bigger than ever. Watch early next week for the pictures which will be posted on the web site as soon as possible.

Special thanks to our Corporate Sponsors, the many Volunteers who make this day possible, and to the Golf Committee for the year-round work they do to make this Scholarship Fundraiser possible. Our goal each year is to raise money for our Stanner Scholarship programs. This outing, the raffle and auction serve to support this endowment year after year. Now in its 23rd year, the Stanner Golf Classic has taken on a life of its own. Our theme for this outing is: Securing Tomorrow’s Scholarships Today!

Diorio Celebrates 50th Anniversary — He’s Ready!

On May 19th, Koenig’s Restaurant in Floral Park will host Stanners, colleagues, family, and the many friends of John Diorio as they gather in celebration of John’s 50th Anniversary as an educator at Molloy. Few teachers ever reach this milestone, and yet, John has somehow made this look easy. More than 10,000 Stanners have experienced his trademark comment, “I’m Ready” at the start of each class, and even more have received the famous “face pat”. All that being said, let us gather in Floral Park to make this a night for his memory book. Register on-line today!

Congratulations Girls Frosh City Champs Sophmore’s 3rd place. It was a great outing for the Girl’s Track team last week as the Freshmen Team took first in the City Championships. The coaches were “over the top” with our Freshman Team performance. AJ Power commented that we have terrific depth on our track team with this performance. The Girl’s set school, meet and personal best’s across the board.

Around the School

So much to do… so little time. These last eight weeks of school are anything but quiet. Sports are in full swing, the awards ceremonies and banquets seem to take up many an evening. The school is alive and well…

Spring Concert Held — Stanner Talent Shines!

The Music Department took center stage on Tuesday night. A wonderful evening of entertainment was enjoyed by a full house as Mr. Leonardo brought out the best from our school band and Mr. Sheehan had the choirs in full voice. It was a night to remember.

Academic Awards Night Demonstrates Stanner Academic Achievements:

Wednesday night brought out the best in the academic arena at Molloy with many students receiving awards in all areas for academic excellence. Mr. Sherry said, “it was gratifying to see our students achieve, and to see the parents pride come out as each student took the podium.”

2009 Series Scholarships for Academic Excellence:

The New York State Education Department has announced the following winners: Nicholas Chan, Angela Dumlao, Michelle Eichorst, Julianne Keyes, Christopher Kosiewska, Stephanie Kotnik, Kristen Lasak, Jonathan Mangar, Mary Napolitano, Dorota Sawicki Audrey Tung, and Daniel Waters. Congratulations to all!

Talent Show Tonight!

Approximately 30 performers will take the stage tonight at the Faculty — Student Talent Show in the Curran Gymnasium. As the year winds down and students begin to ramp up for finals it is good to find many different outlets through which to let off some steam… Talent Show night is one such forum. Mr. Gambino has gathered an All-star team for this year’s show.

Faculty Spotlight — John Martinson ’84

John Martinson has always been focused on Basketball. As a youngster growing up in Rockaway, he attended St. Francis de Sales School prior to coming to Molloy. During his years at Molloy he was active in all aspects of the school with a major emphasis on sports. He came to Molloy based on its reputation in Basketball under Coach Curran’s leadership. He was determined to learn the game and play it in a competitive environment. His four years at Molloy gave him a balanced foundation in all areas; academics, sports and spirit, preparing him for his college years.

His focus paid off with a scholarship to Georgia Tech where he received a BS degree in Management. He went on to St. John’s University where he earned an MBA degree with an eye to working in business or on Wall Street. He interviewed a number of firms, and after looking at the lifestyle the business world offered, he opted to look into a more sports and family friendly option — education.

John continued his education at Queens College where he received a second Masters Degree in Secondary Education. He started his educational career at Molloy as a TA. He was hired as a Physical Education / Health teacher by Brother Richard Van Houten in 1998.

John has seen many changes since his time here as a Stanner. The transition to a co-educational institution was one of the changes we discussed. He feels that the change provided an excellent opportunity for Molloy to continue its legacy as an outstanding academic school. He loves the work here as a teacher and as Assistant Coach for the Varsity Basketball program. Any more, the Basketball season requires year-round attention. Between Open Gyms, the BB Season, and Camps, his year pretty much revolves around Sports… and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

As a Stanner teacher here at Molloy, John feels that the school is still alive with Stanner Spirit. We offer something for every student with balance and opportunity in more ways than we did back when he was a student here. His wish for the future of Molloy is that we will maintain our relevance as a college preparatory high school with an emphasis on our Mission as a Marist school.

St. Ann’s Corner

And a Good Time was had by All!

As you can see from the album of pictures posted on the website, this year’s St. Ann’s Communion Breakfast was one for the memory books. Memorabilia was scrutinized, the St. Ann’s Courtyard was in full bloom, and the Mass in St. Ann’s Chapel, celebrated by Fr. John Serio ’71 SDB, was attended by 60 participants.

In all, the day was a huge success. There were celebrations within celebrations as Peter Wojcicki ’77 celebrated his 50th Birthday with relatives and fellow Stanners at Molloy that day. Traditionally held in NYC, the decision was made to bring this event to Molloy due to the fact that all of the memorabilia and archives reside here.

Non Scholae — Sed Vitae

This summer the Saint Marcellin Society, a group that sends Mission Service Teams into the world from Molloy, will be “On the Road” to New Orleans to work on a Katrina Hurricane relief project. They will be supporting the Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New Orleans project, Operation Helping Hands. They will be installing dry wall and laminate flooring during their week-long service commitment. On their way to and from Louisiana, they will be staying in Nashville with Charlie ’68 and Linda Flood. Alumni in the Middle Tennessee area are invited to come by and meet the team as they travel through Music City. Details and contact information will be announced as the travel plan unfolds. Also, we noticed that there were a number of alumni in the New Orleans area. Perhaps some of them would like to host a mid-week “reception” for the team as they do this charitable work. If you would like to support this work with gas money or van rental support funding, please contact Chris Dougherty at cdougherty@molloyhs.org .

Indebted to his mentor, Leo, Tony agrees to seek out a lonely old man who thinks he’s God and cure the man of his delusion. At first hesitant and reluctant to undertake the task, Tony’s mission leads him on a quest that he never could have foreseen. Timeless mysteries begin to unravel even as skepticism and temptation conspire to keep the truth hidden.

From the streets of Manhattan to a quiet harbor on the Long Island Sound, from a chessboard where the Light and Dark forces face off to the final revelation, Tony finds salvation in the unlikeliest of ways.

Inspired by actual events, How I Got Lucky and Bumped into God is a thought provoking and touching account of how an act of kindness can change the destiny of a man and how the love a boy has for his Father can save them both.

In the interest of bringing Stanners together around the country, the alumni office is planning to launch a series of small gatherings in homes or clubs as we go through the next school year. At this point we have identified two opportunities for the next school year. Alumni in Florida and Connecticut have offered space. We will announce times and final locations soon. There has also been some discussion of a Southern California gathering next year. As more and more of us realize that there are Stanners everywhere, it enriches our network and extends the world of possibilities.

Stanners in Service to Others

Stanner Junior, Kyra Aloizos, and seniors; Jin Hong, and Russ Smith participated in the Coler Goldwater Hospital Wheelchair Classic over the holiday. These students played in the fundraising classic and met the people who will benefit from their service. Stanners serve our community — and others — in many different ways throughout the year.

Around the School — Faculty Spotlight — Mike Harrison

Mike Harrison grew up in Elmhurst and attended Monsignor McClancy High School. He attended NYU for his undergraduate work in History and Political Science and went on to earn a Masters Degree in Special Education at St. John’s.

His first teaching assignment was at St. Luke’s School in Whitestone where he taught Religion and History to 7th graders for five years. While there he noticed that students would come back from time to time and talk of the great experience they were having at Molloy. One student in particular told him of a “Mr. Salmon”, a great history teacher he had at Molloy which got him thinking about a possible career move. As fate would have it, he sent his resume to Molloy and other Catholic high schools in the area and was called in for an interview with Brother John Klein. The rest as they say is history.

During his 22 years at Molloy he has taught most of the courses offered in the history department. Starting with Global History 1 & 2 he has taught International Law, AP European History, AP Psych, Economics, Business Law and Sociology. This coming school year he will be introducing a new course in Personal Finance. “We need to prepare our students for ‘real world’ economics”. This innovation will support our mission to prepare our students for their new life as independent college students.

Mike took a sabbatical last year and followed his other passion — travel. He traveled to Austria, Italy (where he as access to a family home on the Amalfi coast) and Croatia. One of the more interesting sites he saw was an “in-tact” Roman style Coliseum in Pula, Italy. He spoke of the importance of travel through more ancient lands in order to fully understand history. It is his way of adding to his depth of knowledge and life experiences.

Alumni come into the office daily and we chat about their experiences at Molloy. More often than not, specific names come up in conversation and many times Mike Harrison is mentioned with a smile and a wink… you see, he is known as a stickler for detail when it comes to research and documentation. His sense of academic rigor comes from his personal commitment to prepare our students for their college experience. They will have to construct arguments, organize facts, and present a defensible position if they are to be successful at the University level. Our students are capable and it is our responsibility to hold them accountable to very high standards of performance.

He carries this sense of preparation and presentation to the work that he does with the newly re-organized Political Science Club. Began years ago by Mr. Diorio, this group meets to discuss the world of politics and the implications of political decisions on society. He also works with the Chess Club and Team. He feels that Chess, as a game, is a life lesson. Preparing students to think many moves out to reach an objective is a lesson his players learn well. The team has competed in National Championships around the country in years past.

As far as the future is concerned Mike would like to see Molloy maintain its Catholic core as a college preparatory school. He has enjoyed his 22 years here and looks forward to many more.

St. Ann’s Corner

Sunday Morning, April 26th — The St. Ann’s Communion Breakfast will begin with registration at 9:30, Mass at 10:30 and a wonderful breakfast in the faculty lounge following Mass. All graduates of St. Ann’s Academy are welcome to attend and there will be a special presentation to the members of the 50th Anniversary Class from 1959.

Brother John Raeihle ’61 and Brendan Cloonan ’01 spent most of his Easter break working to beautify the St. Ann’s Courtyard as our gateway into Molloy. As you can see from the pictures, this month long clean-up and re-planting has more than accomplished this task. Brother John worked with some seniors on the initial clean-up but the majority of the work was completed over the break by the maintenance crew under the watchful eye and direction of Brother John. Special thanks to all who helped make this part of the St. Ann’s connection. One question remains… just how did Brother John get the tree to be in full bloom this weekend… Hmmmm.

Tom Walsh ’34 — In the News — Still Bowling After all these Years! (91!)

Tom Walsh from the class of ’34 wrote in and added a couple of articles to the mix about his bowling prowess at 91 years of age. Tom started his work life as a member of NYPD’s finest, and after WWII service as a pilot, he went to Owatonna, MN with a comrade to open an airport there. He returned to NY and worked again with the NYPD after which he joined the ranks of the pilots of Pan Am World Airways. This brought him back to Ireland — his parent’s homeland many, many times over the years. His final work was as a commercial pilot for Josten’s on their company plane. For some interesting and historical pictures, click on the thumbnail. The original article appeared in the Owatonna People’s Press last month.

The Auer family welcomed Casey Jack Auer into the family, entering the world at 22.5 in. 9lbs. 10 oz. at 7:57 am on Easter Sunday morning, 4/12/09. Ken Auer sent a note over the break about this wonderful news! Get some rest… you’ll need it!

Mark Gallagher ’71 stopped in to visit with John Sherry ’61 and Coach Curran this week. They reminisced about Mr. Diorio’s Political Science classes and Mr. Salmon’s ability to weave a story about almost anything…
