Congratulations Track and Field Athletes!

Congratulations to 1,300+ student athletes who participated in the district-wide elementary and middle school track and field meets held during the month of May. The track and field meets are just one of several district-wide athletic events that take place for students each year. Thanks to all the Physical Education teachers who committed their time to preparing students for the events.

Community Ed’s Track and Field Instructional Program is for athletes of all ability levels and introduces kids to the fun of of the sport. Led by trained coaches, athletes practice twice per week and participate in two intra-squad meets. The program is being offered at Lafayette and Rockwood Summit High Schools and runs June 3-July 20. Mr. Miller gets stickered with Luck!

On Monday, Stanton students started Mr. Miller's last week of school with notes of love and support. Throughout the day, kindergarten through fifth graders visited Mr. Miller and "stickered" him with encouraging words as he prepares for his last few days as Stanton's Principal. He will be missed.

Summer Savings Week with Community Ed

Summer is almost here! To celebrate, Rockwood Community Education is offering a week of savings on summer programs May 6-10, 2013. Each day, two different camps, clinics or classes will be offered at a reduced price for one day only.

The deals will begin at 9 a.m. and will be available until 10 p.m. each day. Be sure to visit the Community Education website each day to take advantage of these special savings.

5th Grade Promotion

DESE Parent Survey: Services for Special Education

The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) is gathering information from parents who have a child(ren) who receives special education services.

Below is a link to a copy of the survey with two options for submission: online or mail. This survey is confidential; individual responses are not shared with the school district or anyone else.

All surveys should be completed by May 10, 2013.

Prop S Provides Funds for Rockwood Summit School Community

Rockwood has a $38.4 million no-tax increase bond issue on the ballot. The bond issue is titled Proposition S.

At Rockwood Summit, Prop S would provide funding to renovate the front entrance and cafeteria space. This would provide additional safety modifications to the open commons area at the main entrance of the high school. At Stanton Elementary and Uthoff Valley Elementary, the kitchen and cafeteria spaces would be renovated to allow the schools to address child nutrition needs and better manage lunch shifts. These schools have had significant growth in student enrollment the last few years.

Prop S: What Does It Mean For Our School?

On Tuesday, April 2, Rockwood residents will be asked to vote on Prop S, a $38.4 million no-tax rate increase bond issue.

The proposed bond issue supports students by focusing on safety measures, technology improvements and updates to our current facilities.

· Safety: Provide for safety modifications, such as security cameras, door-locking systems and check-in centers at school entrances.

· Technology: Update computers and networks so students are prepared for upcoming state-mandated online assessments.

· School Improvements: Repair and renovate existing schools to maintain the district’s investment in facilities and buildings.

This referendum would not require an increase to the district’s current debt service tax rate. A four-sevenths (57.14 percent) majority is necessary for passage. Election Day is April 2. Please remember to vote.

Fifth Grade Students Can Get a Sneak Peek at Middle School this Summer

Getting ready to start middle school, but not sure what to expect?

Join us this summer for the Welcome to Middle School program, where you’ll have the chance to experience what life will be like over the next three years! Visit the different areas of a middle school building while learning about the daily schedule, time management techniques, extra-curricular opportunities, lockers and more. Each day covers a new topic and provides students with valuable information to make a successful transition to middle school. Taught by certified Rockwood teachers.

Math Acceleration K-5th Grade

Rockwood is committed to the academic and personal success for every student. This includes providing an education with high academic standards and rigor that promotes academic development. It is important for parents to understand the components of math acceleration as educators work to provide the most appropriate math instruction for students and their learning.

What is math acceleration?
Math acceleration moves students through math curriculum at rates that are faster than the typical pace of the curriculum. It matches the level and complexity of math curriculum to the readiness and motivation of the student. Math acceleration is aligned with Rockwood Policy 2535 – Student Academic Acceleration.

What kinds of math instruction are available for students?
Teachers have a variety of instructional methods for math instruction, including:

· Subject-matter acceleration – For part of the school day, students are placed in classrooms with students at a higher grade level for advanced math instruction.

· Classroom differentiation – Students remain in their classroom and teachers use a variety of instructional approaches to modify content and processes in response to the learner’s readiness and academic needs.

How will teachers determine what is appropriate math instruction for my child?
Teachers will use multiple sources to ensure students are receiving challenging math instruction: student performance in the classroom, scores on the Stanford and MAP Terra Nova assessments, scores on the preview test and teacher observations.

Are all Rockwood students going to take a preview test to determine math acceleration for the coming school year?
No. It is important to remember that preview tests are assessments of the next grade level math curriculum. This testing identifies learning objectives already mastered and determines if the student is ready to move to more advanced math curriculum. If the results on state/national tests and classroom assessments indicate the student is receiving the appropriate level of math instruction, then requiring the student to take the preview test is not recommended.

When will parents be informed if math acceleration is needed for their child for the 2013-2014 school year?
Parents of K-5th grade students will receive a notification letter by April 20.

Is there an appeal process if I want math acceleration to be reconsidered for my child?
Yes. Parents can complete a Parent Appeal Form. Please note that parents have one opportunity to submit an appeal form during the math acceleration process.

PSA and Poster Contest

Deadline for student poster and video submissions for this year’s “As Seen By Teens” substance abuse prevention contest is January 22nd. Share your creative message and win an awesome prize, such as an IPod, $100 gift card, sporting event tickets, lunch for friends, or a movie package.

Stanton Service Leaders helped our school collect over 450 towels for the Humane Society. Project manager, Chloe Ceballos, has a love for animals and researched the Humane Society only to find out they were in need of towels to use at their local facilities. Our community did a remarkable job donating. Thank your for the support you give our kids to follow their dreams.
