The Future of Star Trek Analysis

Usually the decision to cancel a show on streaming is rarely done in less than two weeks after its season has aired. Yet Paramount+ did that with Starfleet Academy. When its fast be it in streaming or regular TV it almost always indicates a show wildly underperformed and that seems likely here.

Possibly could blame the merger with Warner Bros. and Paramount but with second season yet to air and likely time on actor contracts, there was no reason to make a decision this early and quickly except to clear the decks.

Strange New Worlds will likely have both seasons release this year and wouldn't be remotely surprised if its the entire seasons at once to save money on advertising. Same with season two of Academy once its completed post-production either late this year or early 2027.

I will be blunt - Star Trek television is dead for the foreseeable future. The movies remain a possibility but suspect the plan is a complete reboot of the franchise.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Officially Cancelled

Variety and Deadline are both reporting that Paramount+ has decided to cancel Starfleet Academy which just completed its first season run. The series has a second season in post-production that is expected to be released sometime next year. Starfleet Academy Season 1 Finale Available Now

If you were waiting for Starfleet Academy to finish its season 1 run so could binge watch, the wait is over. The season one finale is now available on Paramount+ so now all ten episodes are available to view. Below is a click from the finale. Season 2 of the series have finished filming and now in post-production for a likely early 2027 release date.

As for future of Star Trek after that season 2 and Strange New Worlds season 4 and 5, that is unknown as Paramount is very busy with their borgification of Warner Bros. Odds are things will be on standby for awhile.

The Doctor Now Available on Waze

If you use the Waze app on your mobile phone for directions, you can now have it use the voice of Robert Picardo as he channels The Doctor to give out directions. The actor reprised his Voyager role for Prodigy and can be seen now on Starfleet Academy. From Waze, "The Doctor, voiced by Robert Picardo, brings his signature charm and encyclopedic knowledge to your drive with analytic ease and wit to help you navigate everything from traffic hazards to the final frontier of your daily commute. As The Doctor says, problems are not insurmountable as long as you follow his precise directions." In general, the way to change it is go Waze, touch the menu icon (the three lines stacked on each other), then touch "Settings", then "Voice and sound", under Voice section, touch "Current voice". A list of available voice will appear including Mr. Wolf, just look scroll until find "English (US) - The Doctor". You may also see banner about it on the app which will make it real quick to switch. There are also options to change car icon to the USS Athena and your mood icon to Vulcan salute.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Wraps Production

The second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy completed production today for what is looking to be its final season. Its first season is currently airing on Paramount+ with season 1 finale coming in a few weeks. It should be noted that Paul Giamatti did not return for season 2 but is open to returning if there is a season 3. As of now, there are no new plans for future shows or seasons of any show for Star Trek. Plenty of rumors but nothing concrete. With Paramount executives focused on acquiring Warner Bros., long term planning is pretty much impossible right now as planning requires a budget and budgets are in limbo right now. No acquistion and suddenly have to plan for the future and will have the money to do that. Acquire WB and money is extremely tight as the merged company will have a debt load nearly equal to its value. Star Trek could be put back in storage as ratings have been declining and the online trolls keep getting louder. The focus will shift to HBO streaming as its a greater profit center compared to Paramount+. Its a mess and a mess that may not be sorted out for weeks if not months as latest news is a $31 per share offer is seriously being considered for a company that hovered around $19 a share for years. Its the definition of overpayment. Congrats to the cast and crew of Starfleet Academy. It was nice meeting you this season and personally I am looking forward to season 2.

Star Trek: Khan Podcast on YouTube

For whatever reason, I thought the Star Trek: Khan podcast was behind a paywall but it turns out its available on YouTube. This is essentially an audio book based on a story by Nicolas Meyer (Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan) and written by long time Trek book writers Kirsten Beyer and David Mac.

The core voice cast is Naveen Andrews (Lost) as Khan, Wrenn Schmidt (For All Mankind) as Marla McGivers, Sonya Cassidy (Reacher) as Dr. Rosalind Lear, Tim Russ (Voyager) as Ensign Tuvok, and George Takei (Star Trek) as Captain Sulu.

The series is set between classic Star Trek episode Space Seed (1967)just after James T. Kirk left Khan Noonien Singh and his people on Ceti Alpha V to the beginning of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. It explores the events that occurred to turn Khan into such a wrathful person over the course of nine episodes.

Strange New Worlds Casts McCoy and Sulu

Production for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is complete but seems the final season may have some fun with the transition to TOS crew in the final episode. Veteran actor Thomas Jane (The Expanse) has been cast as Bones while rookie actor Kai Murakami will play Sulu.

The extent of the roles were not specified but the series showrunner have said they had planned to end the series by handing the bridge off to Kirk so makes sense to include other members of the bridge crew. As for Chekov, he didn't join the series until season 2. They might figure out a way to include him or just not since continuity wise no reason to. No reason date yet for season 4 or 5 of the series.

Its A Wrap on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

As of Friday, 12/19 around 11:15pm as reported by Anson Mount with a picture of his ready room desk covered in cloth, it was an official wrap on production for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, ending the cast and crew's work on the show. Season 4 and season 5 don't have release dates.

The cast may be assembled to do some additional voice over and promotional work but I also wouldn't be remotely surprised if its limited to just posts on social media and maybe one last full cast San Diego Comic-Con appearance depending if Paramount wants to pay for it which is not remotely guaranteed.

New Starfleet Academy Posters and Clip

It looks like the online marketing campaign for Starfleet Academy's January 15th premiere has begun. Paramount+ has revealed a poster that definitely leans into the teenagers in school vibe of the show with a poster that could have come from most later 1990s shows like Friends, One Tree Hill, etc. They followed it up with a four minute clip that provides an introduction to the new ship USS Athena, Holly Hunter's Captain Nahle Ake, and Paul Giamatti as Nus Braka who makes it clear he is there to chew the scenery (and probably having a ball while doing it).

Star Trek LEGO Set Officially Revealed

LEGO has officially revealed their first official set with Star Trek. LEGO set 10356 U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D is set for release on November 28 (Black Friday in the states) at a cost of $400 for 3600 pieces. The full size model will be 10.5" tall, 23.5" long x 18.5" wide (26.67 cm x 59.69 cm x 46.99 cm) and yes the saucer section does separate.

The mini-figures included with the set will be Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Data, Geordi La Forge, Will Riker, Deanna Troi, Beverly Crusher, Worf, Guinan and Wesley Crusher along with mini-fig sized accessories like phaser, tricorder, PADD and more.

If buy the first weekend of release (while supplies last), there is a LEGO 40768 Type 15 Shuttlepod, specifically the Onizuka from season five episode that introduced Ro Laren which is why she is the mini-fig for that bonus set.

Paramount Done With Star Trek 4

In an article from Variety that looks into first 100 days of Paramount after the merge, it was reveled that Paramount no longer intends to make Star Trek 4. The article says "The hope is to have a fresh “Star Trek” movie, though the studio has moved on from the idea of bringing back Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and the rest of the ensemble from the J.J. Abrams reboot."

It is possible this is incorrect second hand information but it has been ten years since Star Trek Beyond (ST4 failed timeline). The writing has been on the wall for a long time. Ellison's first 100 days has mostly been focused on trying to move CBS News to the right politically, laying off thousands, and trying to buy Warner Bros. so its hard to know for sure exactly what is going on pipeline wise for Paramount movies and TV.

Generally new studio regimes do not like to make use of what previous leadership didn't get around to executing and often trash all previous plans except for those doing exceptionally well like the Yellowstone franchise. A good chance the Star Trek Origin film that was in the scripting stages is probably dead. What all of this means for the future of Star Trek TV remains to be seen. My guess is no decisions will be made until after get an idea on how well Starfleet Academy does.

Starfleet Academy Launch Date, Trailer and SNW Clip

Saturday Star Trek held a panel at the New York ComicCon that revealed new information for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. The series will premiere with two episodes on January 15 with new episodes weekly after that. As part of that, the first vid trailer for the new series. After that, turns out Stephen Colbert has joined the cast in a voice role as the Digital Dean of Students giving daily voice announcements during episodes.

As part of this panel, Entertainment Weekly posted their article with showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau who talked a little about the series. As indicated in the trailer, the U.S.S. Athena is likely the mainset of the series as it doubles both as a starship and campus when it docks on Earth. Chancellor Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) is both captain of the ship and president of the Academy.

The series follows the first class of cadets after the Academy opens for the first time in 120 years thanks to the Burn preventing warp travel (storyline from Discovery). one of the leads is Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta), who joined the Academy in an effort to find his mom (Tatiana Maslany). Her disappearance seemed tied to the Klingon-Tellarite hybrid Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti) who is the big bad of the season.

Other characters include S.A.M. (Kerrice Brooks) which stands for Series Acclimation Mil. This character is a newborn hologram and first hologram to enroll in the Academy. The main set is a two level atrium that will allow for longer walk and talks then normal due to its size. The series has already been renewed for a second season, but a third will depend on how well it does when it comes out next year.

Lastly here is a clip for Strange New Worlds season 4 which currently doesn't have a release date but likely mid to late 2026.

Magic: The Gathering x Star Trek Set Announced for Late 2026

If a fan of Magic: The Gathering, will be pleased to know that Star Trek will be getting its own set in November 2026 so more than a year away. If don't know the game, this news doesn't mean much but for many it could be very exciting, especially since Magic tends to create outstanding artwork for their sets.

The news was revealed as part of MagicCon Atlanta that was held over the weekend. Other news from the 2026 roadmap include a Marvel Super Heroes set in June, The Hobbit in August. More details here. There are also Secret Lair releases (think super expensive mini-sets) involving Jaws, Dwight from The Office, Furby and more. If a player, these are interesting times with all the crossovers that Hasbro plans on.

The Center Seat Documentary Now Available for Free

For the 55th anniversary of Star Trek, a 11 episode documentary series was created that looked back at the history of Star Trek from TOS to Enterprise. The first six episodes aired on the History Channel and the last six were streamed instead. The producers of the series, the Nacelle Company (The Toys That Made Us among others), has now put the episodes up on their YouTube channel. Worth watching for any fan. Post-Merger, Star Trek Is a 'High Priority'

A little bit of good news for Star Trek fans post Paramount/Skydance merger. According to Dana Goldberg "Star Trek is a priority across the company." Goldberg was Skydance's Chief Creative Officer and now co-leader of Paramount studios. Part of the plan is to possibly not treat the movie and TV side as siloed and look at them "holistically" with Goldberg saying "We’re going to make sure those conversations are happening together so that we can do what’s best for [Star Trek] as a whole."

Now what this actually means remains unknown as there have not been enough movies for the separation of film vs TV to be an issue. Its debatable if the "holistic" view has benefitted Marvel. On top of that its directly contradicted by continued plans for Star Trek 4. It remains a possibility using a script from Steve Yockey (Dead Boy Detectives and others) whose work I have enjoyed over the years. The "Star Trek: Origins" (placeholder name) movie is also still in the script writing stage Seth Grahame Smith (Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) writing and Toby Haynes (Andor) directing.

On the Star Trek TV front, nothing specific was said which this early in the merger process doesn't mean anything good or bad. My take is a bunch of PR business friendly words were said to what amounts to Paramount will continue with this franchise but don't yet have specifics on what that will be.

Part of the press conference was name dropping other franchises like Top Gun and Transformers as possible new movies. Really though there was no specifics and it all could be summed up as Paramount has intellectual property that they plan on taking advantage of by making more movies per year with a wider variety of budgets. On the network front, they are keeping the properties with no current plans to sell and are aiming to treat them more like brands rather than channels with Nickelodeon and BET cited as examples.

I suspect the new owners are too polite to say the previous owners underutilized and were too cheap to take advantage of the many successful properties that Paramount owns and they plan on changing that.

The Roddenberry Archive has released a new short documentary that looks into the history of Star Trek: Phase II that was the placeholder name for what would a planned TV revival of Star Trek: The Original Series before the decision was made to make The Motion Picture instead. The video covers not just the history that started planning before Star Wars came out, look at behind the scenes test pics, designs and re-creation of planned sets and ships with CGI. Worth checking out.

In addition, the Archive posted other videos including an interview with Walter Koenig, a look back at the "Shatnerverse" of books (fun reads) by Judith and Reeves-Stevens (worth reading any of their Trek books), and a conversation with Wrath of Khan director Nicholas Meyer.

Watch Strange New Worlds Murder Mystery Full Episode for Free

Paramount has made the season 3, episode 4 episode called "A Space Adventure Hour" available for free on YouTube, Pluto TV, Roku and on Paramount+. The episode makes use of the now classic holodeck style episode that The Next Generation first created. Don't worry, the pre-TNG holodeck is explained and important part of the main plot which in this case is a 1969 murder mystery with the cast playing different suspects and clearly having a ball doing it. The setting makes it a perfect fit for Jonathan Frakes, TNG's Riker, to direct the episode. It was a fun episode and highly recommend giving it a viewing.

SDCC 2025 Reveals Starfleet Academy, Khan, and Puppet SNW Teasers

Today the panel for Star Trek was held at the San Diego Comic-Con 2025. As part of it, new teaser trailers were released. The first one is for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy that has an approximate release date of early 2026. An overview of the cadets is here.

Next is a teaser for Star Trek: Khan audio series. Initially planned as a TV miniseries, unknown behind the scenes difficulties reduced it to an audio series. The story is based on script from long time Star Trek book writers Kirsten Beyer and David Mack. The audio series will follow Khan as he and his people survive on Ceti Alpha V as the planet's environment rapidly changes for the worse. The audio series will premiere on September 8th on carious podcast platforms. Voice cast includes George Takei as Captain Sulu, Tim Russ as Ensign Tuvok, Naveen Andrews (Lost) as Khan, Wrenn Schmidt (For All Mankind) as Lt. Maria McGivers and more.

The last teaser is for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 genre bending episode of a puppet episode involving a transporter accident using puppets built by Jim Henson’s Creature Shop. As for season three's deep dive into another genre, that will be coming out next week for a classic Agatha Christie type murder mystery in an episode called "A Space Adventure Hour."

Paramount and Skydance Merger Approved By FCC

After paying a $16 million bribe and agreeing to end all DEI programs, the FCC has finally approved the $8 billion merger of Paramount and Skydance. Before complain, I am not injecting politics, this comes from the FCC.

“...Skydance has made written commitments to ensure that the new company’s programming embodies a diversity of viewpoints from across the political and ideological spectrum. Skydance will also adopt measures that can root out the bias that has undermined trust in the national news media. These commitments, if implemented, would enable CBS to operate in the public interest and focus on fair, unbiased, and fact-based coverage. Doing so would begin the process of earning back Americans’ trust. Today’s decision also marks another step forward in the FCC’s efforts to eliminate invidious forms of DEI.”

Now that the political part of the merger is done, the financial part is expected to close on August 7 with the official name being "Paramount Skydance Corporation", with David Ellison in charge of it. He is the son of billionaire Larry Ellison who founded Oracle. What this means for Hollywood and Star Trek fans is a big question mark.

What can be assumed is massive cuts and layoffs are coming as financial backer of this deal, RedBird Capital, say they identified $2 billion in savings from the merger. Speculation on how they reach that number, outside of layoffs, include selling parts of the company such as various studio properties and their cable network (BET, MTV, Nickelodeon, Showtime and others). This will also likely mean across the board budget cuts and cancellations of TV shows and movies including in production ones (like say The Late Show with Stephen Colbert).

What does this mean for Star Trek? Skydance co-produced Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond so they have a connection which is not nothing but that doesn't indicate future decisions. Chances are with contracts signed and budgets already allocated, the current production slate of Star Trek shows will be allowed to run their current course. Even if it takes time, Star Trek always makes its money back. That means Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will complete its five seasons and Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will be able to complete the second season. After that? Its up in the air.
