I worked on Meridian 59, which was a wholly skill-based game, and learned a lot about the strengths and pitfalls of systems like it. One of my great pet peeves of pure skill-based systems is that they claim that they are more realistic, but they in fact can create extremely unrealistic situations inside the world.

In the original Everquest, it was not uncommon to see a player throwing himself off a cliff over and over again to improve his safe falling skill, or to see a person macroing some random text gibberish in order to improve his languages. In Meridian 59, players used to park themselves in front of low level monsters and leave the keyboard - they were unlikely to die, and could accumulate defense points in a slow, steady and totally risk-free manor. In Oblivion, the best way to build an assassin character is to hop through fields picking flowers. Jumping improves your Acrobatics (I believe), and the player needs enough flowers to grind up his Poisoning skill.

Sure, each of these could be destupidified with enough designer/programmer time and focus, but then you're coding, QAing and exploit-proofing a different advancement mechanism for every skill in the game. And you'll probably still end up with some silliness somewhere.

I know some people are offended by the idea of do stuff->gain experience->gain level->somehow get better at something completely unrelated. - I know I was too, young in my career when I designed M59. But one of the most important thing for advancement systems is that you get the behavior you incentivize. In a classic XP/Level based system, you are incentivizing your XP-granting behaviors (which in SWTOR is tilted strongly towards questing). In skill-based systems, it is trivially easy to accidentally incentivize really stupid and boring behaviors.

In other news, BioWare writer Randy Begel posted a poll to see what the motivations are behind people's Star Wars: The Old Republic class choices:

There are a lot of class polls on the forums. Most touch on what people's favorite (or least favorite) classes are, but I'd like to take the question a step further and ask why. For instance, is it a desire to stand defiantly against tyranny (story) that draws you to being a Jedi Knight, is it the appeal of flashy lightsaber combat and force acrobatics (gameplay), or perhaps just the aesthetics of being the space knight in shining armor (appearance/vanity)?

Obviously, the number of motivations aside from these basic three are legion, but I think these cover the most likely reasons certain classes appeal to certain people (and I can't have more that 25 options in my already convoluted poll, so blame it on technical limitations if you must!)

So let's hear it, which class will you play and why?

Star Wars The Old Republic Advanced Classes

Star Wars: The Old Republic's eight character classes will each split into two specialised Advanced Classes, giving the player a total of 16 choices of career in BioWare's MMO.
The first Advanced Classes to be revealed are those for the Sith Warrior. Choosing Juggernaut will shape this warrior into a tough, damage-soaking tank class, while the Marauder is all about channelling rage and maximising damage output.

Looking at the first exclusive screens of the two, it looks like the Juggernaut will feature the heavy body-modifications of Darth Vader, while the Marauder will be able ape Darth Maul's twin-lightsaber fighting style.

Juggernaut Style

Choosing your Advanced Class is a pure gameplay decision rather than a story decision. Advanced Classes will share the same epic narrative, but have different combat styles and play different roles in a group.

Each Advanced Class will have its own skills and abilities that define its role on the battlefield, and in some cases grant access to new weapon and armour types. Choosing one means you won't have any access to the skills of the other.

Darth Vader Style

And each Advanced Class will have a further three branches of skills to specialise in (equivalent to World of Warcraft's talent specialisation options on a single class). Unlike the Advanced Classes themselves, you can mix and match these if you like, although they're all trained from the same pool of points.

The first two skill trees are particular to your Advanced Class, while the the third is a shared set of skills which expand on the core abilities of the main class.

There's much we still don't know about Advanced Classes: what the other classes will advance into, when you'll make the choice, and whether you'll be able to change your choice at a later date. But it's already clear that the range of options they'll offer the player is impressively large.

Video Documentary #4 - Combat

The latest video documentary released is a look at how combat is being developed for Star Wars: The Old Republic. The other three classes currently known are the Troopers, Smugglers, and Jedi Knights, which will be fighting on the Republic side.

We're told that the Imperial Agent will let players explore "the underbelly of the Empire" and will be using high-tech gear to help them with their infiltration and assassination. Let the speculation begin.

This leaves two unannounced classes, and we have a suspicion there'll be news on them before too long. My name is Drew Karpyshyn. I was the lead writer on the original Star Wars™: Knights of the Old Republic™ game, as well as the author of several Star Wars™ novels. And I’m here to tell you about the Jedi Knight character class.

Now, anyone who’s familiar with my novels Darth Bane: Path of Destruction, Darth Bane: Rule of Two and the upcoming Darth Bane: Dynasty of Evil might be surprised to hear I’m working on the Jedi Knight class. But I was excited to step away from the dark side so I could embrace the challenge of writing the “good guy”. (Or “girl,” of course.)

And let’s be honest: the Jedi Knight is *the* iconic character in this universe. Nothing says Star Wars like a brown-robed figure brandishing a shimmering energy blade of righteous destruction. The Jedi Knight is the classic take-charge, smite-evil, save-the-girl action hero. We’re all familiar with Luke Skywalker, of course. But he wasn’t the only lightsaber wielding champion of virtue to flip, spin and somersault his way across the big screen. Young Obi-Wan Kenobi and Mace Windu both proved you can kick ass and take names while still valiantly battling to uphold the ideals of the Jedi Code.

Ah, the Jedi Code. That’s where things get interesting, isn’t it? Because the Jedi are more than just unstoppable Force warriors. They’re symbols; they embody an ideal. The Code dictates that a Jedi’s actions must be driven by logic and reason. There is no emotion, there is peace.

Nice theory. In practice, however, it’s never that simple. Jedi Knights strive for mental, physical and spiritual perfection, but they’re still human. (Well, not just human, but you know what I mean.) They’re not infallible, and meting out justice in a dangerous galaxy sometimes means getting your hands dirty.

You see, combat is never a problem for the Jedi Knight. Acrobatic lightsaber moves, unleashing devastating Force attacks and back-round kicking opponents in the face are second nature. But what happens when a sworn enemy surrenders and begs you for mercy? You *know* letting him live is going to come back and bite you. Unfortunately, slicing an unarmed opponent in half sort of violates everything the Jedi stand for. So, do you let him live? Or do you bend the rules – just this once – for the greater good?

Suppose you don’t kill him. What if he offers you power in exchange for letting him go free? You can use that power for good. Make the galaxy a better place. The Jedi Council might disapprove, but they’re not out here on the front lines fighting for their lives day in and day out, are they?

Maybe that’s what the Jedi need. Someone with a bit more of an edge. Someone willing to push the limits. Someone willing to cross the lines and battle the Sith on their own terms.

Only once you start down that path, it’s sometimes hard to turn back. Maybe the true heroes are the ones who resist the easy way out. Maybe the Code is what gives the Jedi their enduring strength. Maybe honoring its tenets under all circumstances is the only way to achieve ultimate victory over the dark side.

But the path of uncompromising virtue is a hard road. Take the whole “Jedi must avoid emotional attachments” thing. Love, romance – the Council has decreed these feelings must be denied. Yet after the heat of battle, is it so wrong to seek comfort in the arms of another? Is it better to live a life of solitude and loneliness, or to admit your true feelings and keep your secret affair hidden from those who would pass unfair judgment?

These are the kinds of questions you will face when you play the Jedi Knight. The galaxy needs a savior. The light side needs a champion. What kind will you be? Are you a paragon of virtue; the shining example the Council holds up to show the rest of the galaxy? Or are you a renegade, defying both Code and the Council as you purge Sith from the galaxy?

Whichever path you choose, just be sure to keep your lightsaber handy. I have a feeling you’re going to need it.

Drew Karpyshyn
Senior Writer

Revealed: The Jedi Knight

The latest class, the Jedi Knight, was just revealed on the official SWTor.com site.

For thousands of years the Knights of the Jedi Order have been the guardians of peace and justice in The Old Republic. I didn’t see any form of complex AI in there, as alot of the Mobs we just standing there shooting at each other. But its already been stated that the game will not be out this year but they are hoping to start beta testing soon.

Sith Warrior Revealed

The next class that has been announced for Star Wars: The Old Republic is the Sith Warrior. Their success culminated in a bold civilization, made stronger when dark Force-users arrived and interbred after being driven out of the early Jedi Order. This ancient Sith civilization eventually became a superpower and challenged the Republic during the Great Hyperspace war. Their defeat drove a handful of survivors into deep space where they regrouped and rebuilt, determined to return.

Over time, the new Sith Empire lost its way back to Korriban, until a visit a few centuries ago by two Jedi returning from the Mandalorian wars. Turned to the dark side, the two Jedi, Revan and Malak, attempted to reclaim the Sith’s legacy in the known galaxy, but turned on each other and self-destructed.

The true Sith Empire, governed by a thousand-year-old Dark Emperor, wisely waited, and returned to the known galaxy only when completely prepared to defeat the Jedi and the Republic.

Retaking the holy planet of Korriban as a top priority, the Sith re-established the glorious Sith Academy and began training a new generation of Sith to inherit their dark legacy and seize their birthright as the true rulers of the galaxy.

New Random Information

Seeing though there are a few new bits of info floating around this week. They show you what some of the abilities are for the smuggler class. These were posted by Jinx in the post here.

Smash (Sith)

Force Choke (Sith)

Electro Dart (Smuggler)

Interesting seeing the descriptions. Seems that each move is a CC move. Electro Dart would be similar to a Rogue’s sap in WoW, Choke and Smash are CC abilities also. Waiting to see what other abilities are also planned. From what has been announced and shown so far, I’m left with alot of questions regarding abilities.

Are these the only abilities we get?

Do we start with these abilities straight away?

Are there more that haven’t been shown yet?

Do abilities get unlocked as you progress higher through the levels?

The list goes on.

Wonder if they will follow the WoW style of leveling where you get upgrades to that skill every few levels and once in a while get a new ability. Could even be possible that we get every skill when we start, but as you level you get points to place into any ability and make it more powerfull. Guess we’ll just have to wait until things become a bit more clearer regarding how abilities will be gained or even if there are any more.

Star Wars The Old Republic Leveling System

Today game developer DamianSchubert gave us some new details about what type of advancement system we will see in TOR.

The design team believes that one of the hallmarks of both great Bioware products and of the strongest MMOs is a solid character progression system. By this, we think characters should get stronger, they should gain more flexibility (i.e. more abilities or other choices to make in combat), and they should be presented with different avenues for character development within their class.

There are multiple ways to build an advancement system in an MMO. We did indeed choose to go with a level-based system for SW:TOR. It seemed to be the best system to align with our other goals for the game, including the story progression elements. Our version of advancement gives greater returns for questing and story than simply killing critters.

Regarding the grind: level systems aren’t inherently bad, and in fact are a lot of fun in a lot of games, both MMOs and not. A leveling system (and indeed, any advancement system) becomes a grind when it is poorly tuned – when it’s too slowly paced, when its uneven (i.e. ‘hell levels’), when the rewards are poorly paced (i.e. no rewards between levels 35-39 but several at level 40), or when the advancement system acts as a barrier between you and what you really want to do. When this happens, people stop just enjoying the game and start looking for ways to maximize their advancement efficiency. This is when people start talking about there being a ‘grind’. Put another way, the ‘grind’ is a symptom of a bigger problem, that being the act of progressing your character isn’t inherently fun on its own.

Again, this is no way limited to level-based systems – I’ve certainly played MMOs without levels where players ‘grinded’ up their skills, their abilities, or their faction reputations, among other things. Still, we’re pretty sure we have a handle on how to keep the advancement path smooth but interesting, and advancement rate is one of the things that we’ve been asking our players about in all of our internal playtesting.

Behind the Scenes Interview wth Derron Ross

Here is an interview with Derron Ross, the animation supervisor for Bioware.
