Messi leads Barca into Champions League quarters

BARCELONA, Spain (AP)—Lionel Messi scored once in each half Tuesday to lead Barcelona to a 3-1 win over 10-man Arsenal on Tuesday to reach the Champions League quarterfinals.

The Spanish champions went through 4-3 on aggregate, knocking out Arsenal from the competition for the second straight season after their quarterfinal win last year.

Messi has now scored 45 goals in all competitions and a club-record 33rd in Europe, eclipsing Rivaldo’s previous mark by two.

The Argentina forward made it 1-0 in first-half injury time at the Nou Camp, receiving a pass in the area from Andres Iniesta and flicking the ball over onrushing goalkeeper Manuel Almunia before dispatching it into the net.

“To talk about if it’s one of Messi’s best goals, there’s no point—he scores such great goals they become normal,” Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said.

Arsenal, which didn’t shoot once all game, leveled when Barcelona defender Sergio Busquets headed the ball into his own net in the 53rd, forcing the hosts to score twice more to advance outright.

But the visitors were reduced to 10 men when Robin van Persie received a second yellow card in the 56th, and Xavi Hernandez scored three minutes later to put Barcelona in control.

The Netherlands striker was booked by referee Massimo Busacca for time-wasting after kicking the ball away when play had just stopped for offside. But Van Persie was livid, indicating he hadn’t heard the whistle due to the noise from the 95,000-plus crowd.

“I cannot understand that view from the ref,” Van Persie said. “If there were four, five, six seconds in between, you can make a check (for offside). One second? It’s a joke.

“He’s been bad all evening, whistling against us. I don’t know why he’s here tonight. We feel betrayed a bit, when it was 1-1 it was all to play for, and in my opinion this referee killed the game.”

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was also outraged.

“I just spoke to UEFA people and they are shocked as well,” Wenger said. “You promise a fantastic football match, but what for? How he did it, frankly it’s embarrassing for the game.”

Guardiola said the Arsenal manager had one request for him.

“Wenger told me to congratulate the referee,” he said.

Cesc Fabregas had given the ball away near his own box in the buildup to the opening goal, Iniesta scooping a perfect ball between defenders to set Messi free, and the Arsenal captain later accepted responsibility.

“I take full blame for the result tonight,” Fabregas said on Twitter. “One of the worst moments of my life. I apologise.”

Fabregas had returned only 13 days after injuring his hamstring, while Van Persie was back after nine days sidelined with a knee problem. Van Persie was first booked for barging into Dani Alves toward the end of the first half as tempers flared.

With defensive duo Carles Puyol (knee) and Gerard Pique (suspension) missing, Eric Abidal and Busquets were paired as center backs. But the two were rarely tested as the Spanish champions dominated possession through slick, one-touch passing.

“The reality is that (Arsenal) were not able to string together three consecutive passes and they were not able to shoot once on goal,” Guardiola said.

Backup Arsenal goalkeeper Manuel Almunia came on in the 19th to replace Wojciech Szczesny, who dislocated a finger, and the Spaniard denied David Villa three times before Xavi made it 2-1 and 3-3 overall in the 69th minute.

Villa guided Iniesta’s short pass into the path of Xavi as he ran into the area, the Spain midfielder firing a shot that took a deflection off an Arsenal player before going into the net.

Led by Xavi, Iniesta and Messi, Barcelona continued to string together numerous short passes and create chances against a backpedalling Arsenal team struggling to repel the constant wave of attacks.

Xavi then played in Pedro Rodriguez, who was tripped inside the area by Laurent Koscielny. Messi converted the resulting penalty in the 71st to take his total against Arsenal to six goals from four games and a competition-leading eighth goal.

Barcelona wasted several more chances—the hosts had 19 shots for the match — before Arsenal substitute Nicklas Bendtner had a late opportunity to put his team through on away goals, but Javier Mascherano got back to tackle him in the box.

“We lost against a very good Barcelona side,” Wenger said. “But we have many regrets tonight because we didn’t expect to lose the game like that.”

Fantasy Football 2010/11: A Guide to Winning

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sat, 27 Nov 2010 17:45:00 -0800

Premier League Fantasy Football is a hugely popular game worldwide, and whether it’s being played for pride, money or honour, everyone wants to win. I am from www.fantasyfootballassistance.com, a website where a group of experts give advice on Fantasy Football. This is the first of a series of articles that will be published on this site in the coming weeks to help you achieve the best possible results from your fantasy football team. Throughout the next few weeks I will be passing extracts from our expert’s advice to you, the readers of caughtoffside.com. There will also be some extra, exclusive tips for caughtoffside readers which can’t be found anywhere else; however, to view all the expertise we can provide, you will have to visit our aforementioned website. For today though, the basics:

1. Pick cheaper defenders from the lower teams.

Provided these players start each match, they can be some of the cheapest players on the game and yet still provide a regular point’s score. Defenders from Stoke, Birmingham and Fulham catch the eye because of their low price tags and their solid defensive form last season. Faye, Carr and Senderos are good options from each of these teams, and all are priced generously at 4.5m. In comparison, Fabio Da Silva is priced 5m despite playing just over 150 minutes last season, showing that by paying more you don’t guarantee a higher points score. By having a variety of cheaper defenders, you also provide yourself with the option of squad rotation, meaning you only have to play the players who have a relatively easy match in that particular week. By buying these cost cutting players for your team, you also give yourself the option of including more expensive, and high scoring midfielders and strikers, which based on previous years is where the big points are available.

2. Study the fixture list.

The upcoming fixtures are the most important thing, as if your team is filled with players with easy matches your points score should obviously be higher. For example, Manchester City players are currently being favoured by many, with Tevez likely to find himself in many fantasy managers’ teams. However, a look at the fixture list will show that City have one of the hardest starts of the top clubs, playing 3 of the top 7 from last year in their first 6 games. This is not to say that Manchester City players will not do well, but it is definitely something to consider when selecting your team for the start of the season. One team who have a relatively easy start is Bolton, and with new addition Martin Petrov valued at only 6 million, we believe he could score more highly than some of the more famous and more expensive players at Manchester City. On our website we will recommend players who have relatively easy upcoming matches, meaning you make the right selections. However, some people prefer to do it for themselves, and we also cater for this. On our website there is a fixture tracker, where the next 6 matches for each team are rated according to points scoring potential. By studying this tracker you can select players from the teams who have the easiest future matches, meaning you gain an instant advantage over your rivals.

3. Don’t pick defensive midfielders.

Defensive midfielders, even for the bigger teams can be very cheap; this often tempts managers into including them, but there is a reason for their cheap price tag. A case study is Nigel De Jong, who, at only 4.5 million may seem a good, cheap option from a highly ranked team. However, despite playing over 2500 league minutes last season De Jong managed no goals, no assists and scored a meagre 73 points. Currently around 10% of people have selected De Jong, which shows manager’s readiness to give up on goal scoring midfielders for a cheap big name player. The issue with these defensive players is that they spend their time making tackles, then giving the ball to the more creative players. While this is crucial to the team, it does not mean big points on fantasy football as the points come for assists and goals, as shown by De Jong’s disastrous points tally. For this reason the defensive midfielders should be avoided, and cheap attacking players, even from lower teams should be selected instead. Players we recommend from this group are Nolan for 5.5 million, and Adam for 5 million (but more on him later).

4. Pick set piece takers.

Some players often score good points across the season, simply due to assists from free kicks, and goals from penalties. Frank Lampard, for example, scored 10 penalties in the premier league last season, and while most players will not score as many as this, it is clear that high points are available simply for being the penalty kick taker. The problem with this is that many of the penalty kick takers are expensive, meaning that better value may be found elsewhere. However, Charlie Adam is only 5 million, and as penalty and free kick taker for newly promoted Blackpool we believe he could be a good option for your team. To find out more about Charlie Adam’s fantasy football prowess, visit our website where he is listed as the ‘gamble’ option for week 1.

Lingerie Football League coming to a city near you

noreply@blogger.com (Unknown) — Sun, 15 Aug 2010 15:39:00 -0700

Ladies running around in lingerie tackling each other on national television?

Yes that’s right! You probably all remember the pay per view Super Bowl halftime show in 2004, when 2 teams of models were matched up against each other to battle in out in what was known as the Lingerie Bowl. Well since then it has become so popular that the league is launching a 10 team franchise that is set to play games starting in fall of 2009 (which will air on cable TV no less).

Currently there are just four teams, the Tampa Bay Breeze, Miami Caliente, Los Angeles Temptation, and the Phoenix Scorch. These 4 will go head to head the night before the Super Bowl down in Tampa, FL for Lingerie Bowl VI. You can actually buy tickets to it on their website, www.lingeriebowl.com.

These 4, along with the 6 new teams will then start preparing for the first official 10 game season. Games will be played on Friday nights so they do not interfere with college and pro games… what better way to extend your football weekend? Here's the lineup:

Western Conference Teams: Eastern Conference Teams:

-San Diego Seduction -Chicago Bliss

-Los Angeles Temptation -New England Euphoria

-Seattle Mist -Atlanta Steam

-Phoenix Scorch -Tampa Breeze

-Dallas Desire -Miami Caliente

The more I read about this league, the more I like it! I wonder if I could play for the IWFL in the spring and the LFL in the fall? Of course it is hard to believe that the Lingerie League would be as serious or as competitive as the league I’m in now… but how fun! My question is, would you guys actually come to a game?

I went ahead and sent an email to the “Interested Players” link on the website just in case I decide that it would be a good idea. Can’t hurt right? I’ll keep you updated on how that goes.

The rest of the week:

Brewers are at Cincinnati, Badgers have a bye, and of course, the big Packers/Cowboys game Sunday night. With both teams 2-0 this will be a showdown! I actually had to turn down tickets to the game because Sunday is also the date of this year’s Miss WI USA Pageant…I can’t believe it either. Who schedules these things!?!? I’ll still be watching from a sports bar in Madison though.

What’s the prediction?

As much as I love the Packers, and keeping in mind that they have never lost to Dallas at Lambeau, I have to go with the Cowboys winning a close game.

With Woodson and Grant sitting out of practice, even when they do play Sunday I don’t think they’ll be 100%. Our defense still has a few kinks to work out and this doesn’t help.

I hope the Packers prove me wrong though!
