I've seen a lot of Games come and go, but nothing and I mean nothing stands up like a Blizzard game. Years past the expiration date, players will be going at each others throats in world wide competitions.

So, when a sequel comes along, The Gaming Universe grinds to a halt. And guess what just happened...yeah, you know what I'm talking about.

Steps

Command respect. Don't use "1337 Speak" like all the other wannabes, good spelling and grammar shows a respectable player. It also shows you are spending a lot of time typing when you should be managing! Don't trash talk either.
You must have a worker being produced at all times. This is especially true on money maps, but is important for terran and protoss in normal maps as well.
Scout the map. Gathering intel is vital so you can counter the opponent. Knowing the locations of multiple enemy bases is also important so you can disrupt the opponents economy.
Don't send your Marines/Zealots/Zerglings to death. If doing a rush, things aren't turning out well, leave, and park your units outside their base. Its not worth letting them die.
Know your shortkeys. In StarCraft the person who can penetrate their enemies defence wins. With the speed shortkeys can give you, you can take your enemies unaware.
Learn different "build orders" from friends, replays and online. Obviously adapt if your opponent counters.
Hotkey your units. A well controlled group of zerglings can take down a group of zealots if you surround them.
Know your unit's advantages and disadvantages. Use the advantages to your advantage and try to find counters when opponents exploit your disadvantage.
Spend as many of your resources as possible, but be aware of what you spend it on. (this is known as "macromanagement")
If you lose, type "gg" (which means "good game") to show good manners (type first). If you win and your opponent types "gg", type it back.

Warnings

Talking like a newbie will destroy your chances of looking like a pro no matter how good you are.
Pros LAN, but if you ever want to get to that position playing on Battle.net is your only way. Ladder games don't hurt either.
