Happy New Year everyone!

My new year's resolution is to work harder than ever to make Stardew Valley the best game I can and to get it into your hands as quick as possible. It's going to be a big year!
I'd also like to let everyone know that Stardew Valley was selected as IndieDB's Editor's Choice Upcoming Indie Game of the Year for 2012!

I recently posted to YouTube a video called "Stardew Valley Soundtrack Highlights" that included several songs from this game. All of the songs in the video were created entirely by me on this very PC. So it was a shock for me to discover that the video is blocked in Germany and Japan due to a copyright claim issued by EMI, suggesting my video includes copyrighted material from the song "Myron Butler-Not My Own (feat. Tasha Cobbs)".

The claim is so absurd that I can only imagine it being the result of a poorly designed music recognition bot. The dumbest part is that I already disputed the claim a while back, thinking that a human would look at it and immediately drop the claim... but this morning I discovered that my dispute was rejected by EMI. Now I have to file an appeal to EMI (during which I am warned multiple times by youtube that such an appeal could result in legal action against me and a strike to my youtube account) in order to exonerate myself against this ridiculously absurd claim and regain control over my own copyrighted material. *double sigh* *triple sigh*. We live in a strange world. Sorry for the rant. <3

Here's a little demo video of making your own buildings, with some random fence/lighting setups. I'm kind of a messy guy, but I'm sure some people will make really neat, well planned farm layouts. It'll be fun to see what people come up with.

Hi everyone, here's a video with some extended gameplay footage... You can see quite a few of the "improvements" I've made since first posting the game to Steam Greenlight and releasing the first trailer:
-Tall Grass
-Wild trees to chop down
-Fences
-More frames per animation
-Actually see the sword when you swing it.
-Lighting/Lanterns
-Overall color and terrain improvements.

I was kind of running around sporadically in the mines... sorry if you got dizzy.

Here is one thing I recently added... fences!

Build them any way you want... It's up to you to make the best use of them for your purposes, whether that's to keep the tall grass out, to keep your animals in, or to keep your farm looking sharp! Craft 4 different fence types, each with its own unique look and durability.

Well, I got that lighting system all worked out! Also, day turns to night in a smooth and continuous way, rather than chunky. Added the "Lantern" as a new tool. You'll need your lantern if you want to explore the caves! As the fuel is used up, the radius of light decreases, and finally snuffs out. You wouldn't want to get stuck in the caves with no light... who knows what's lurking in the shadows?

Hey everyone, today I started working on a lighting system... and on making night-time look a lot more mysterious. I am very pleased with the results so far, and lighting in general opens up a lot of new possibilities for Stardew Valley. Here's a screenshot:

Hey everyone, here's a very short video that shows a couple of the new things I've added recently (chopping down trees and tall grass):

The tall grass is replacing the earlier "weeds" (that looked so much like HM). Grass will appear randomly on the farm and will then start spreading if you don't cut it back. However, your animals can eat this grass when outdoors, so you might want to think twice about destroying every clump in sight. Also, fences will be somewhat important since they provide a way to control the spread of grass (grass can't grow through a fence).

Trees will have multiple uses, and since they don't grow in winter you might want to set up a tree farm in fall so you have plenty of wood to chop during the off season. I also have more plans for trees in the future (after alpha).

Here is what I'm working on next:

Farm stand to replace the shipping bin
Better character portraits (I will post examples soon)
NPC's "pathfind" to their destinations instead of walking on preset paths. This will allow me to greatly increase the complexity of the characters' behavior.

Well I've finished updating all the graphics! ... I think everything is looking a lot better than it did. Now I'm changing a few other aspects of the game:

Instead of dumping your items into a shipping bin, you place them into a farmstand next to your house. If all goes well, the locals will visit and hopefully buy from your stand (at a premium price). A guy in a truck comes at night to pick up anything that's left.

Sticks and stumps are gone. Instead, you'll get wood from chopping down trees. I'm still thinking about the best way to acquire stone. If you have any great ideas about collecting stone, let me know ;)

My goodness, thank you so much for prompting me to refresh the graphics, everyone! When I look at my new graphics side-by-side with the old, I can hardly believe my eyes. It's like the old graphics had a film of bone-dry primordial dust on top which I've removed to reveal a technicolor dream! I guess when you stare at something ugly long enough you just get used to it.

I'm afraid I'm almost going overboard with the new colors, so I'll post new vs. old screenshots of my changes soon to see what you think. I'm also doing what I can to reduce the "grid feeling" of the tile maps.
Okay, I'm getting back to work now... ^-^

After getting some useful input from the steam community, I've decided to spend some time improving all of the graphics in Stardew Valley. I will post new screenshots and a new trailer when I am finished.

Also, I've decided I am committed to making modding as easy as possible. As of right now, it would be fairly simple for anyone to completely redo the graphics, all character dialogue, item names/prices/edibility,
and change or add more cutscenes. However, I would like to add more modding possibilities, such as adding new monsters, entirely new characters, new crops, more animals, and anything else I can think of that isn't insanely hard to implement. I'd also like to either provide clear instructions on how to mod the game, or even create a seperate application to aid in the process. Please let me know what you think, as well as any other features you would love to see in a farming game. Thanks!
