A beautiful lamp inspired by the Finnish "Bilberry", a small Finnish
variation of the classic blueberry. The Bilberry was one of Alvar
Aalto's favorite fruits. Alvar Aalto used to love the mustikkapiirakka
his wife (Aino Aalto) used to make...a delicous Finnish Bilberry Pie.
And indeed; the shape of his lamp design clearly resembles the
Bilberries which can still collected in the forests of Finland nowadays.
The round Alvar Aalto Bilberry lamp, model A 338, is particularly
suited as a spotlight since it provides direct non-diffused light. One
of Alvar Aalto's Finnish fixtures for Artek, the on-the-smaller-size
A 338 Bilberry Pendant Lamp will provide direct light from its offset
opening in the painted steel shade. The A 338 Bilberry lamp was used in
Alvar Aalto's renowned Maison Louis Carré (a modernist house designed
by Alvar Aalto in 1956-1958). Sleek, sophisticated and naturally

The <a href="http://www.stardust.com/artek-aalto-a338.html" target="_blank">A338 Bilberry Lamp</a> was prominently featured in Alvar Aalto's <a href="http://www.moderndesign.org/2012/07/alvar-aalto-maison-carre.html" target="_blank">Maison Louis Carré</a>. In the commune of Bazoches-sur-Guyonnes, about 40
kilometers southwest of Paris, sits one of the most important private
houses designed by Alvar Aalto: Maison Louis Carré. The client, Louis
Carré, was a prominent French art dealer who was also very interested in
architecture. He desired a house that would be able to accommodate many
guests for art viewings, but also incorporated a private component. He
commissioned Aalto to design his house in 1956.</div>

is made of velvet like etched satin opal-white hand blown glass. The
diffused light passes the lamp's shade accordingly soft and creates a
pleasant atmosphere. The lampshade is open near the bottom, so that

We had ourselves a little photo shoot with one of our favorite chairs: the transparent <a href="http://www.stardust.com/SEARCH.html?q=kartell+victoria+ghost+chair" target="_blank">Victoria Ghost Chair</a> designed by <a href="http://www.stardust.com/SEARCH.html?q=philippe+starck" target="_blank">Philippe Starck</a> for <a href="http://www.stardust.com/SEARCH.html?q=kartell" target="_blank">Kartell</a>. Classic lines and a rounded backrest show the historical origins of this chair, whilst its robust form is made from transparent polycarbonate. Scratch and weather resistant, this comfortable chair offers versatility and a unique design. The Victoria Ghost chair was designed by Philippe Starck for Kartell in Italy. Victoria Ghost is a modern interpretation of classic Louis XV-style chairs. Philippe Starck deliberately designed this chair with a smaller than usual seating area; the seating surface measures only 15" wide. This may be small for people with overly well-endowed behinds, yet, it is perfectly fine for most of us.<br />

<a href="http://www.vernerpanton.com/" target="_blank">Verner Panton</a> was one of the most influential figures in the development of design during the 1960s and 1970s. Along with his experimental approach to forms and colours, he was captivated by the potential of plastic, a novel material at the time. His aim was to create a comfortable chair made in one piece that could be used anywhere. After searching for a manufacturer for several years, Panton came into contact with <a href="http://www.vitra.com/" target="_blank">Vitra</a> in 1963. Together they developed the Panton Chair, which was first presented in 1967. </div>

Conceived by Verner Panton in 1960, the Panton Chair was developed for serial production in collaboration with Vitra. The Artemide Tolomeo Floor Lamp is an icon of Italian modern design. It was designed by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina in 1986 for <a href="http://www.stardust.com/ARTEMIDE.html" target="_blank">Artemide</a> and remains one of the most popular floor lamps in production. In its original configuration, it consists of a heavy base, two straight polished aluminum arm sections, and a matte aluminum reflector head which can swivel 360°. Steel tension cables attached to springs hidden inside the arms complete the constant-tension structure. The Artemide Tolomeo Lamp was awarded with the Compasso d'Oro design award in 1989.</div>

The AJ Floor lamp by Danish designer <a href="http://www.stardust.com/SEARCH.html?q=arne+jacobsen" target="_blank">Arne Jacobsen</a> was designed, among other lighting fixtures and the iconic <a href="http://www.stardust.com/SEARCH.html?q=arne+jacobsen+egg+chair" target="_blank">Egg Chair</a> and <a href="http://www.stardust.com/SEARCH.html?q=arne+jacobsen+swan+chair" target="_blank">Swan Chair</a>, for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. The standard lamp consists of a lampholder in an enameled brass pipe. A tilting mechanism has been installed in the pipe. The angles of the conic metal shade are made to be flush with the lampholder at the top, at least that was the intention, but in reality it is raised a little as an optical correction. When the lamp is tilted downwards, the edge is horizontal. The inside of the shade is matt white enamel. The light source is effectively screened for diffused lighting. Using a clear incandescent bulb the light is exploited the best way and the the light rays delineated preciesly.

Arne Jacobsen created his beautiful AJ Floor Lamp (designed in 1960) to echo the oblique angles of his Series 3300 furniture, which included the Egg Chair and the Swan Chair. The heavy cast iron base of the lamp is a sloped wedge with a circular cutout that was originally designed to hold an ashtray, but is equally successful left empty, as it mirrors the shape of circles and cylinders found throughout the series. To maximize the lamp's functionality as a reading light, Jacobsen created a shade that tilts up or down, directing maximum light to where it's needed. Like the Swan and Egg chairs, the AJ Floor Lamp was designed for the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, for which Jacobsen designed every element, from the skyscraper structure to the stainless steel cutlery. Arne Jacobsen was cool and we are totally cool with that too.

Arne Jacobsen was very productive both as an architect and as a designer. His cooperation with Fritz Hansen dates back to 1934. The Ant and Series 7 chairs, produced in 1952, propelled both Jacobsen and Fritz Hansen's names into furniture history. At the end of the 50's Arne Jacobsen designed the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, which introduced the Egg, the Swan, the Swan sofa and Series 3300 to the design world. The l-shaped legs of <a href="http://www.stardust.com/aalto-artek-60-stool-p-artek.html" target="_blank">Stool 60</a> were
revolutionary for their technical realization and it represented a boost
for all the modern Scandinavian design. To bend the leg of Aalto’s
stool, the same technique is still in use: a piece of straight, solid
birch was sawn open at the end in the direction of the fibres, forming
the shape of a fan. Thin pieces of plywood were then glued in the
grooves. This structure makes it possible to bend the wood by heating or
steaming the desired corner/angle and when dry it will have a very
strong texture that can be easily joined to the seat of the stool.</div>

Alvar Aalto (1898-1976), one of the founders of Artek, was born in Kuortane, Finland. Alvar Aalto is recognized today as one of the great masters of modern architecture. During his long and prolific career, Aalto’s work embraced almost all key public institutions - town halls, theatres, churches, libraries and universities - as well as standardized housing and private homes.
Aalto’s architecture is distinctively Finnish. It is marked by a warm humanity and strong individuality. Like all great art, however, Aalto’s architecture transcends national boundaries. Alvar Aalto began designing furnishings as a natural and important extension of his architectural thinking. His first modern piece of furniture was created in 1931-32 for the Tuberculosis Sanatorium in Paimio, which proved to be his international breakthrough. Artek was set up in 1935 to market and sell Alvar and Aino Aalto's furniture, lamps and textiles, particularly on international markets where Artek focused its operations from the initial stages.
Through the innovations in form and line that were born in his furniture designs, Alvar Aalto’s name has also become important in the history of design. In fact, Aalto first achieved fame in Continental Europe as a furniture designer, and only later on as an architect. His contribution to furniture design was among his foremost achievements in its own right, and it sowed the seed from which many of his architectural ideas sprang forth. Today we pay tribute to one of the most amazing landmarks of New York City: <a href="http://www.grandcentralterminal.com/" target="_blank">Grand Central Terminal</a>. We've had a love affair with this beautiful building from the moment we arrived in New York many years ago. Grand Central Terminal survived many ups and downs in the last 100 years. Yet, it looks better than ever; especially on the inside! <br />
2013 is the year that New York's grande dame celebrates its centennial anniversary. Reason enough for a little homage! Stardust loves these amazing photographs of cathedral-like Grand Central Terminal (sometimes incorrectly named Grand Central Station) in New York City from a bygone era. <br />

We made sure to use the authentic original images without alterations. Plus, we've selected only those photographs that display a beautiful balance between light and shadow. The photographer is referenced when known. If it's not, please let us know the photographer's name and we will be happy to update the credits.

Perhaps one of New York's finest monuments, Grand Central Terminal was designed in a Beaux-Arts style by the architectural firms of Reed and Stem and Warren and Wetmore. The terminal opened on February 2nd 1913 when trains were still a luxurious means of traveling across America. It was dubbed the greatest railway terminal in the world and had an $80 million price tag (a very large sum back in 1913)! The beautiful astronomical mural on the Main Concourse's ceiling depicts the Mediterranean sky during the October to March zodiac, featuring 2,500 stars. Designed in France and constructed in Long Island City, the massive figures of Roman gods Mercury, Minerva and Hercules look down from Grand Central's 42nd Street entrance. Weighing 1,500 tons and 66 feet in length, the figures were carved separately and then joined together on the Terminal's exterior. The world's largest Tiffany clock, measuring 14 feet, resides at the center of the sculptural group at Grand Central's 42nd Street entrance.<br />
<br />
In 1968, Penn Central (the owner of Grand Central Terminal) unveiled plans to demolish the Station. Plans called for a tower designed by modernist architect Marcel Breuer even bigger than the Pan Am Building to be built over Grand Central. Perhaps it is awkward that Marcel Breuer even considered playing part in this atrocity. The plans drew huge opposition, most prominently from Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Six months prior to the unveiling of the Breuer plans, the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission designated Grand Central Terminal a "landmark". Nowadays more than 750,000 people pass through Grand Central Terminal which is the entire population of Alaska.<br />

The combination of black and white photography, filtered light streaming through the windows, New York City, Grand Central Terminal, and the atmosphere of a lingering Depression Era create a perfect storm of photographic wonderfulness.<br />

These astonishingly beautiful black & white and sometimes sepia-colored photographs have something dauntingly beautiful. The effect would be difficult if not impossible to repeat today. The terminal used to be filled with sooth from the trains and quite a bit of tobacco smoke. In addition, light can no longer beam in because of the numerous tall adjacent buildings that now dwarf Grand Central Terminal. Still, it is nice to try to imagine what it felt like to stand in those beautiful beams of light that we see in old photos such as these. Wish we had a time machine! 1941, the dawn of war: it's perhaps sobering to realize that the above photographs by John Collier were shot just two months prior to the attack on Pearl Harbor. During World War II a USO Canteen was located inside Grand Central reflecting the important role that the Terminal served as a point of departure for thousands of American troops.<br />
<br />
In 1957 the Hungarian-born French photographer Brassaï visited the US for the first time and took perhaps one of the last great light&shadow photographs. Soon after; new construction outside Grand Central Terminal would block out most sunlight coming through the windows of Grand Central Terminal.<br />

To celebrate the 80th anniversary of a beloved piece of modern furniture, the <a href="http://www.stardust.com/aalto-artek-e60-stool.html" target="_blank">Aalto Stool E60</a>, Stardust is bringing back this beautiful example of Finnish design. The E60 stool designed by <a href="http://www.stardust.com/SEARCH.html?q=aalto" target="_blank">Alvar Aalto</a> is one of the icons of furniture design and a <a href="http://www.stardust.com/SEARCH.html?q=stardust+staff+pick" target="_blank">Stardust Staff Pick</a>.
Sleek, sophisticated and unmistakably modern. Alvar Aalto’s
four-legged stackable E60 stool was presented for the first time in 1933
and it was a sensation in the design world of his time. The stool's
L-leg was revolutionary for its technical realization and it represented
a boost for all the modern Scandinavian design. To bend the leg of
Aalto’s stool, the same technique is still in use: a piece of straight,
solid birch was sawn open at the end in the direction of the fibres,
forming the shape of a fan. Thin pieces of plywood were then glued in
the grooves. This structure makes it possible to bend the wood by
heating or steaming the desired corner/angle and when dry it will have a
very strong texture that can be easily joined to the seat of the stool.
Aalto stool is still today a beautiful genious product, whose simple
shape will always be modern. </div>

This year the four-legged <a href="http://www.stardust.com/aalto-artek-e60-stool.html" target="_blank">Alvar Aalto Stool E60</a>, a classic of Scandinavian modernism, becomes an octogenarian. But despite its vintage it still looks as contemporary as ever, as do all of Alvar Aalto’s designs, including the three-legged Stool 60. For five years Aalto and Marsio conducted experiments together into the bending of wood (in a manner that would make Charles and Ray Eames famous as well).</div>

Throughout 1932 the couple finally developed the distinctive bent L-shaped leg that made their design possible.
Originally the stools were manufactured by Huonekalu-ja Rakennustyotehdas and were a great success. Which is why, in 1935, Aalto and his wife decided to form Artek; a furniture company that has produced them from birch veneer ever since. The <a href="http://www.stardust.com/aalto-artek-e60-stool.html" target="_blank">Alvar Aalto E60 Stool</a> by Artek is now available through <a href="http://www.stardust.com/" target="_blank">Stardust</a>.<br />

Europe. The Cesta, a magic lantern created by well-known designer Miguel
Mila, consists of a cherry wood structure and an inner ball of light.
Its oval volume and handle make it equally ideal for table tops and the
floor. In the mid-sixties, the Cesta's supporting structure was made of
Manila cane and the ball of light was made of plastic. Santa &
Cole dignified and updated it after 1996, using heat-curved cherry wood
and an opal crystal ball which enclosed the bulb, and adding a dimmer

It is a lamp with a sense of nostalgia, which is proving even more
attractive for the newer generations. It is reminiscent of the style of
lantern which hung on coastal houses as a signal for the returning
sailors, and which was also found in country houses and terraces open to
the dark nights of 1970s Spain. Today, it is a classic lantern found in
houses with a wide range of decors, and bears the characteristic stamp
of its designer Miguel Mila. Like a traditional Japanese or Chinese
lantern or portable torch, it would not be out of place in the Japanese
palaces of the Edo period, with its careful modulation of light and
shadow.
The attention to detail is reflected in the fact that not a single screw
is visible, and that a wooden pin enables the handle to be turned and
prevents it escaping from its guide, with the result that all the
materials employed for the mechanism are wood

The <a href="http://www.stardust.com/floschasen.html" target="_blank">Chasen Pendant Lamp</a> was designed by Patricia Urquiola for Flos. Spanish architect and designer Patricia Urquiola lives in Milan where she runs Studio Urquiola, a firm that focuses on exhibitions, art direction, and architecture. Prior to starting her own company in 2001, she managed the design group Lissoni Associati.
Over the years, Urquiola has worked with many well-known furniture houses, including Moroso, De Padova, Agape, B&B, Alessi, Driade, Foscarini, Kartell, Flos, Molteni, and Artelano. She has received numerous design awards including A&W Designer of the Year and Design Prize Cologne, and is sought after as a speaker at conferences and universities across the globe.
Patricia graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Madrid in graduated in 1989. In 1991, as head of the product development team at De Padova, she designed her first commercial furniture pieces in collaboration with Vico Magistretti. Her work was deemed highly imaginative, yet functionally pragmatic, an appealing combination that has defined her work for the last two decades.
Urquiola says after more than 20 years in the industry, she's still not exactly sure how she arrives at a finished design. "All the little answers to the questions give you a sense of the product," she says. "It's a lot of work, the mood of the piece is what people catch - I just flow with the river and try to do things that a
re sincere, that anyone can understand." </div>

The Tolomeo by Artemide sure is no flash-in-the-pan. As one of the most beloved icons of modern design; the Tolomeo has captured the limelight of architects, interior designers and home-owners alike since its introduction in 1989. It continues to be one of the most popular desk lamps more than 20 years after it was released. The Tolomeo desk lamp is an icon of Italian modern design unlike any other. Tolomeo was designed by Michele De Lucchi and Giancarlo Fassina in 1986 for the Artemide lighting company. In its original configuration (still available from Stardust), it consists of a heavy base, two straight polished aluminum arm sections (each approximately 45 cm long), and a matte aluminum reflector head which can swivel 360°. Steel tension cables attached to springs hidden inside the arms complete the constant-tension structure. It won the Compasso d'Oro design prize in 1989. Probably the most famous and most photographed Case Study House is the Case Study House #22, also known as the Stahl House, designed by Pierre Koenig. This Case Study Project came immediately after the Case Study House #21 with which it has many architectural similarities indeed. The Stahl House, constructed on a beautiful bluff overlooking the ever-growing city of Los Angeles, was designed with an L-shaped plan and minimalist structure made of steel and glass. Its minimal design, together with the spectacular Julius Shulman photographs, made this Case Study House one of the icons of the mid-century modern architecture movement and an example of experimental construction methods.<br />

Pierre Koenig designed the Stahl House with all rooms facing the minimalist swimming pool spanned by a concrete footbridge that easily linked the car parking space with the entrance. Pierre Koenig created Case Study House #22 is a pavilion made of steel, framing 20-foot wide elements of glass that defined the inner space; a minimal and elegant design.<br />

In 1999, it was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. In 2007, the American Institute of Architects listed the Stahl House as one of the top 150 structures on its "America's Favorite Architecture" list, one of only 11 in Southern California, and the only privately owned.<br />

experimental and with a commitment to transcending the boundaries
between science, technology, design and architecture, the brilliant and inventive designer Ross Lovegrove continues to embrace nature as the inspiration for his new creations. An apparently organic round form conceals an innovative optical unit
that uses an inspiring side emission to ensure competitive lighting
performance and significantly reduced power consumptions. A circular
fluorescent diffuses the light into the environment over 360° thanks to
optics just 45mm in height: the light flow is completely collected and
directed laterally towards the space without disturbing the gaze. To his surprise, Neutra agreed.
