Starless Glitz

Atl

2012-07-13T07:00:00.000-04:00

I almost forgot to post my photos from my trip to Atlanta! I'm really terrible at taking photos on vacation. I get caught up in my activities and completely forget to document the occassion!

1 - My view from the 34th floor at the Marriott Marquis downtown Atlanta.
2 - The view from the lobby to the top floor. The elevators were all glass.
3 - Bath & Body Works Shampoo, Conditioner, and Body Lotion. Yes, I took them home.

1 - My first time at Gladys Knight & Ron Winans Chicken & Waffles. YUMMY!!
2 - Me waiting outside in 100 degreem temps for chicken and waffles. Worth the wait!
3 - My drink (on the house) at Sear inside my hotel.
4 - My dinner one night also at Sear...seared bass and couscous! Delish!

Did I mention that this was a work trip? It was the annual Society of Human Resources national conference.
1 - Some of my swag from the conference. I do it all!
2 - Tuesday night show... Jerry Seinfeld! Yes, he still does stand-up and yes it was hilarious!
3 - Condeleeza Rice, the opening speaker for the conference. Very inspiring! I had never heard her speak before but she was truly AMAZING!!

Be Good (Lion's Song)

2012-07-11T07:00:00.000-04:00

Someone shared this video with me a few days ago. This song is beautiful! "Be Good" is the first video from Jazz singer Gregory Porter's critically acclaimed album of the same name.

Be Bohemian

2012-06-29T07:00:00.000-04:00

I was originally introduced to Boho-Gal via instagram (follow me @the_socialite1). Each day a new piece of jewelry was posted and I became more and more obsessed. I finally gave in and made a purchase. To my delight, a lovely package was waiting for me this morning in the mail. With my recent trip to Atlanta, I had completely forgotten about the little treasures I had purchased only a few days before.

I have always admired the comfy freedom that accompanies all things Bohemian. I have longed to transition my style to a more Bohemian air, so logically I've started with accessories (jewelry, hats, scarves, etc.). So here is to a more Bohemian state of existence.

Dear White People

2012-06-25T07:00:00.000-04:00

"Remember when Black movies didn't neccesarily star a dude in a fat suit and a wig? Or have major plot twists timed to Gospel numbers for no apparent reason? No?

Well believe it or not there was a time when "Black Art-House" was a thing. When movies like Do The Right Thing, Hollywood Shuffle, and Boyz In Da Hood were breaking box office records as well as making us laugh, cry, and think in ways movies hadn't before.

The humble producers of DEAR WHITE PEOPLE, a satire about being a black face in a white place, long to bring those days back." DEAR WHITE PEOPLE follows the stories of four black students at an Ivy League college where a riot breaks out over a popular "African American" themed party thrown by white students. With tongue planted firmly in cheek, the film will explore racial identity in "post-racial" America while weaving a universal story of forging one's unique path in the world.

I stumbled across this trailer on indiegogo.com and fell in love with the concept. This group of independent filmmakers are looking to raise money to get this movie produced and released at a theatre near you! After viewing the trailer, I must admit, it is a refreshing change from today's movies with predominantly black casts. Do you think this movie could be successful?

On Vacation - ATL

2012-06-23T12:00:00.000-04:00

Ok so it's not really a vacation, it's a business trip but I'm going to make the most of it!! The business aspect of my trip is scheduled to end each day by 4:00 pm which leaves plenty of time for sightseeing and fun. I have several friends who live in the area and it will be great catching up with everyone. Pictures to come, of course. Until then, have a fabulous weekend!!

My Fav Place - Desserts

2012-06-18T07:00:00.000-04:00

Red velvet cupcake

One of my favorite guilty pleasures is a local shop called Favor Desserts located in Durham, NC. The owner's story is inspirational, the desserts are impeccible.

The owner, Keijuane Hester served almost four years in prison for drug dealing. Once released (and after a string of dead end jobs) he decided to take up a skill he was already familiar with in the kitchen. With $30, a hand mixer, one regular oven, and no pans he started a baking business in his home. Starting small, he sold his cakes by the slice at beauty salons and barbershops and used that income to grow his business. He would sell a cake, buy a pan, sell a cake, buy a pan. Hester now has a store front to sell his delectable desserts.

When you walk into Favor Desserts, the first thing you notice is the smell--that heavenly aroma of something absolutely delicious baking in the back. The second thing you notice is the contemporary decor which makes it the perfect spot to relax with a date for a devine cupcake and a cup of coffee. If you're in the Raleigh-Durham area (or planning to visit), this place should go on the top of your list if you're looking for a sugar fix.

Just for Tweets

2012-06-14T07:30:00.000-04:00

I love Twitter. My followers are so diverse and unique. I follow everyone from business men and women, underground music artists, chefs, stylists, and regular Joes and Janes. They are a constant and endless source of entertainment and information. Here are a few tweets that made me chuckle or think over the past week.

(This is a sports reference. If you don't get it, it's ok.)

Dress Like a Goddess

2012-06-11T07:00:00.001-04:00

Etsy is one of my favorite websites to window shop so imagine my delight when I came across RiverOfRomansk's exquisite little shop. River of Romansk "is whimsical, romantic and enchanting...recreat[ing] an era of dainty loveliness; of sash and ribbons, satins and laces.. all of which are reminiscence of a time more dreamy and innocent." Anyone who knows me would ROTFL at the idea of me being excited about ribbons and lace but how can you not fall in love with these elegant dresses?

Nueva York - Day 4

2012-06-06T07:00:00.000-04:00

As my vacation progressed, I became less and less focused on photos so forgive the lameness of these pictures. It's so easy to get caught in awe in this place. Monday was super hot so we decided to hang somewhere cool---the movies. I saw Battleship and MIB 3. I'm really not a movie person but I thought they were both good flicks. I was pleased with Rhianna's performance in Battleship and I really liked the way the movie referenced some aspects of the board game. That was pretty neat. Will Smith was of course funny in MIB 3 but the movie did have a interesting twist at the end that I didn't expect!! That's all I'm going to say to keep from spoiling either movie for anyone.

Movie stubs. Notice the prices. Both were matinees.

After the movies, we made a quick stop at White Castle. I must confess, this was my first White Castle experience. Thanks to the State of New York, which requires restaurants to post calorie information next to all foods on the menu, I knew exactly how unhealthy my delicious meal was. I'm not gonna lie...it kinda ruined the thrill a bit for me.

My first White Castle experience--delish!!

A friend of mine insisted on Spanish food later that evening. Good call! Unfortunately, I can't remember the name of the place but the food was great. I felt much better about this meal than my burgers earlier.

Spanish meal

This is the last recap of my trip since my photos are getting super boring now lol. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and I will DEFINITELY make plans to return.

Nueva York - Day 3

2012-06-04T07:00:00.000-04:00

This was by far the best day of my vacation. Technically, I was outside of New York but it was still part of my vacation so I will include it under the same umbrella. I traveled to Bloomfield, New Jersey to celebrate the 40th birthday of a fabulous woman.

The Birthday Girl and her loving husband.

I've decided that if I'm a fraction as fabulous as this woman 10 years from now, I will consider myself blessed. There were so many people who traveled for miles and several states away to join her in this wonderful occasion. No matter how big or expensive the gifts, it's the people who make life worth living.

Oakeside Mansion, Bloomfield, NJ

The party was held at Oakeside Mansion with about 150 guests.

The tablesetting

Me and my "date". We had a blast!

I realized after the night was over that I never took a picture of my outfit!! It slipped my mind in the midst of all of the excitement. Once photos come back from the photographer, I'll have to snatch one and post it.

The food was AMAZING!!

There was an abundant amount of food. Overall, this was not a good weekend for dieting. Not including the heavy hor d'oeuvres served during cocktail hour, the dinner included eggplant parmesan, turkey, stuffing, and roasted potatoes. After dinner, cute dessert trays were placed on each table (which was nearly devoured before I could take a photo). This was followed by birthday cake.

No, that's not cake. You are mistaken.

Gift from her husband -- a Mercedes Benz complete with big red bow!

This was the best part of the night. Her husband surprised her with car keys inside of a Tiffany's box. After her initial shock, she couldn't stop crying. Ladies, if you're wondering (because I asked), they met on a blind date and he has no available brothers, cousins, or friends. Bummer.

Open bar with ONLY top shelf beverages! The bartenders were super nice and generous pourers.

I almost forgot to mention, there was an open bar the entire night!! I had a DD so I took full advantage. I was on vacation, after all.

Nueva York - Day 1

2012-05-31T07:00:00.000-04:00

Needless to say, I had a blast in New York. There is so much to see and do it makes it hard to leave. I had a long to-do list that quickly became irrelevant once I got into the swing of things. Instead of creating a single blog entry about my entire trip, I've decided to break it up and elaborate on the highlights. I hope you enjoy!!

Harlem, NY

The Demolition Depot was one of the first buildings I spotted when I got off the bus in Harlem. I really liked how old parts were used to create the wording across the building and you can see all types of rummage through the windows. The Demolition Depot is a unique source of vintage plumbing fixtures, doors, windows, shutters, railings, gates, etc, etc. which are geared towards the re-creation and renovation of period places. I was inspired. If I hadn't been bogged down with luggage (and, more importantly, if they had been open), I would have stopped and taken a look around.

On a more random note, the 2nd building I noticed was the DMV and the line was down the block!! Keep in mind it was about 8:30am on Friday morning. Sheesh!

Brooklyn, NY

I didn't have a lot of time for photos initially as I was on a strict timeline to get to my dear friend's apartment before he left for an appointment. Unfortunately, even after rushing, I arrived too late. I used my free morning to get some breakfast at the bottega and get a much needed pedicure. The bottega and the nail shop were across the street from each other and a block from my friend's apartment. How awesome is that? Reason number #459 why I love NYC!!

After feeding my belly and getting my feet to a more presentable state, I took a moment to chill out on the stoop. I noticed the texture and colors in the aged door behind me and decided it would make a great back drop for a photo. Viola!! This was the result. I concluded that if I ever made a CD, this would be my album cover.

That evening I went out to Iguana New York Restaurant & Dance Lounge. The drinks were strong and the music was great. What more can a girl ask for? The night also included a stop at Ray's Pizza (I'm not sure which one but it was delish!). Here I am at the end of the night (roughly around 5:15 am) waiting for the subway after a great evening in the city!!

On Vacation - NYC

2012-05-25T18:30:00.000-04:00

I'm spoiling myself this year as promised and doing more traveling. This weekend I'll be taking my Southern Hospitality to the wonderful and amazing city of New York. I'm looking forward to all the exciting events taking place for Memorial Day. Stay tuned for photos from my trip (seriously this time). Until then, Happy Friday!!

2012-05-14T14:19:00.004-04:00

I'm all about representin for natural black beauty, especially in a society where silky straight is the most politically correct hair type. There is something about rockin my fro or a colorful scarf and wearing a natural hair t-shirt that makes me feel extra confident. Not to mention the positive comments and compliments make me feel extra awesome. Sometimes you have to toot your own horn! Here are a few t-shirts that I'd like to add to my repertoire...WHICH ONE IS YOUR FAVORITE?

To-Do List

2012-05-04T07:00:00.000-04:00

Wear a shirt that says "Life". Hand out lemons on the street corner.
Hire two private investigators. Get them to follow each other.
Major in philosophy. Ask people WHY they want fries with that.
Go into a crowded elevator and say, "I bet you're all wondering why I gathered you here," with a straight face.
Make vanilla pudding. Put in mayo jar. Eat in public.
Become a teacher. Make a test where every answer is "C". Enjoy the show.
Wait until someone is about to sneeze. Right before they do, loudly scream, "PIKA PIKAAA!!!"
Run into a store, ask what year it is. When someone answers, yell "It worked!" and run out cheering.
Buy a horse, name it "Oscar Takes the Lead", enter it into horse races.
Invite someone into your office, turn around in office chair and say, "I've been expecting you..."
Change your name to Simon. Speak in third person.
Buy a parrot. Teach the parrot to say, "Help I've been turned into a parrot."
Follow joggers around in a car blasting "Eye of the Tiger" for encouragement.

Which ones are you adding to your list?

Black & White

2012-05-02T07:00:00.000-04:00

I don't remember photography being this difficult when I was on the yearbook committee in high school. I couldn't get the right lighting with these photos but I enjoyed this outfit. I was going for kind of an 80s vibe with this look. I put my hair into a faux-hawk and left the shoulder pads in this blazer that I got from the thrift shop. I carried the black and white color scheme all the way down to my shoes. Sadly this is the last time I'll be able to wear these shoes. I broke the heel while I was out!!

Color Block

2012-04-30T07:00:00.000-04:00

I apologize for being missing in action over the past few weeks. I assure you it's for a very good reason but it's too soon to share (I know, it's not fair). In the meantime, I'll share with you an outfit I wore over the weekend. I'm loving this color block trend. I often color block (even before it was "trendy") but I decided to try a different combination of pieces and colors.

I'm still in the learning process with my camera and tripod so please be patient with my amateur photos. I'm going to get better...I promise!!

April Shopping

2012-04-24T10:17:00.004-04:00

Over the past month or so, I have been working on building a new wardrobe. I've dropped two dress sizes with my recent weight loss and my closet is bare. I've been trying to work with the few pieces I had but the repeats were just a little too frequent for my preference (even with my remixes) and wearing super baggy clothes is not sexy. During a recent shopping adventure, I picked up a few new pieces:

3 blazers
2 jackets
2 pair of pants
2 tops
1 jumpsuit
1 pair of sandals

Yes, I even bought white pants!! Now that I have a tripod (that's what we single girls have to do) and clothes that fit, I'll be posting more photos of my outfits.

Mega Millions

2012-04-11T07:00:00.000-04:00

As I'm sure you know, the Mega Millions Jackpot hit a historical high of $656 million last week. I've only gambled three times my whole life -- twice with someone else's money (lol seriously, I'm THAT cheap) but I put my $2 into the pot this time around. The immediate cash payout for a single winner would come to $474 million. WOW!! That's a lot of scratch.

Of course with so much money up for grabs, the conversation among my family, friends, and coworkers (before the winning numbers were picked and we all discovered that we didn't win) was, "What would you do with a half a billion dollars??" No, no, not the obvious, "ordinary" stuff like paying off bills, buy a cool house, drive your dream car, get a maid, make sure your family and closest friends were taken care of, blah, blah...who cares. I mean the one crazy, insane I'm-rich-and-I-know-it thing you would do with your money. That answer is nothing I had to dwell over for any period of time. I would go Mariah Carey on my closet. Yeah, super crazy. I know you've seen and drooled over it before but I honestly can't get enough of it. Would I have an associate working there full time? YES. Her job would be to put together outfits for me each day and rotate my clothing so I don't accidentally wear the same thing twice...ewww!! That's what poor people do! My "used" clothing items would go towards a charitable cause. I would resell the items at a crazy discounted price (for "less fortunate" fashionistas) and the proceeds would go towards Dress for Success, an organization I currently volunteer for. What would you do?

For your viewing pleasure, I've added a few photos of my...errr Mariah's closet.

Open-Toe Shoe Pledge

2012-04-10T10:13:00.002-04:00

The time has come. The leaves have returned to the trees, flowers are blooming and the weather is warm. It's the perfect opportunity to step out with those cute peep-toe or open-toe shoes that have been buried deep in your closet for the past several months. It seems that every year there are serious violators who give this time of year a bad name. I took this pledge from Yoli Loves in a effort to stop "winter feet" from appearing in spring and summer. I urge all of you to take the pledge too!!

I pledge to follow the Rules when wearing sandals and other open-toe shoes:

I promise to always wear sandals that fit. My toes will not hang over and touch the ground, nor will my heels spill over the backs. The sides and tops of my feet will not pudge out between the straps.

I will go polish-free or vow to keep the polish fresh, intact and chip-free.
I will not cheat and just touch up my big toe.

I will sand down any mounds of skin before they turn hard and yellow.

I will shave the hairs off my big toe.

I won't wear pantyhose even if my misinformed girlfriend, coworker, mother, sister tells me the toe seam really will stay under my toes if I tuck it there.

If a strap breaks, I won't duct-tape, pin, glue or tuck it back into place hoping it will stay put. I will get my shoe fixed or toss it.

I will not live in corn denial; rather I will lean on my good friend Dr. Scholl's if my feet need him.

I will resist the urge to buy jelly shoes at Payless for the low, low price of $4.99 even if my feet are small enough to fit into the kids' sizes. This is out of concern for my safety and the safety of others. No one can walk properly when standing in a pool of sweat and I would hate to take someone down with me as I fall and break my ankle.

I will take my toe ring off toward the end of the day if my toes swell and begin to look like Vienna sausages.

I will be brutally honest with my girlfriend/sister/coworker when she asks me if her feet are too ugly to wear sandals. Someone has to tell her that her toes are as long as my fingers and no sandal makes creepy feet look good.

I will promise if I wear flip flops that I will ensure that they are actually flip and flop, making the correct noise while walking. I will swear NOT to slide or drag my feet while wearing them.

I will promise to go to my local nail salon at least once per season and have a real pedicure (they are about $35 and worth EVERY penny).

I will promise to throw away any white/off-white sandals that show signs of wear... nothing is tackier than dirty white sandals.

Don't keep this to yourself - pass it on to other sisters.

How to Care for Introverts

2012-04-05T07:00:00.000-04:00

If asked, my friends would describe me as bubbly, friendly, outgoing, a social butterfly, and the life of the party. I enjoy meeting new people, having new experiences, and at times I'm okay with being the center of attention (not for an extended time but short bursts of attention are okay). Outgoing? Sometimes. I have always considered myself to be a shy person but NOBODY agrees with that. After coming across this list, I stand corrected. I've decided that a better description is that I'm an introvert who can be shy depending on the situation. I wish I could print this out and give it to my friends, family, and coworkers as a guide. Any other introverts out there?

Healthy Me - Part I

2012-04-02T18:36:00.001-04:00

I have been working diligently to lose weight over the past several months. The journey has not been an easy one, especially through the holidays. But I'm excited to announce that with the help of my nutritionist and lots of hard work, I've lost 25 lbs!! My goal is to lose approximately 40 lbs by Memorial Day weekend because in my book, that's the official kick-off for summer.

How did I do it?

I made better food choices -- more fruits and veggies and fewer dinners out and convenience foods.
I was more active -- I completed the Couch to 5k running program, took short walks during my lunch break and after dinner, and joined a gym (I never go to the gym without a workout plan).
I was consistent -- which is the most important part!! I will be honest and say there were days/weeks when I didn't eat so well or when I didn't work out at all. But I didn't let those days keep me from getting back into my routine and staying focused.

I'm guilty of having an all-or-nothing attitude but with long-term goals, consistency is key. Being successful everyday is impossible but as long as at the end of the week or month, you've had more successful days than non-successful ones, you're headed in the right direction. I take it one meal at at time, one workout at at time, one pound at a time.

Below are my before and during (cause I'm not quite done!!) photos in the same swimsuit. Although it's hard to tell, the swimsuit is a little big now but this helps give a visual of my weight loss. I'm really excited about this journey. It hasn't been easy but DEFINITELY worth it. Do you have any health or fitness goals you're working towards?

Disappointed Hunger Games Fans

2012-03-26T22:06:00.001-04:00

America has exasperated me for the past several weeks with the ongoing coverage and updates on the Trayvon Martin "investigation" and racist campaign bumpers stickers created by Obama non-supporters but I've been trying to bounce back. I try not to let those types of things get me down. Of course, just when I think I can go back to blogging about shoes, bags, and clothes, I come across an article on Jezebel about book fan reactions to The Hunger Games movie. As you all know The Hunger Games movie was released over the weekend. The highly anticipated movie was expected to do well with so many fans of the book written by Suzanne Collins.

The movie did make history by being the 3rd largest grossing movie in box office history ($155 million) but many book fans were disappointed in the casting. More specifically, they were let down that there were so many characters in the movie who were black (namely Rue and Cinna). Wait...what? Nope, you heard me! The Jezebel article has photos of tweets posted by several people who were "disappointed" that Rue was a black girl. One tweeter went so far as to say that Rue's death wasn't as sad after discovering she was black.

This breaks my heart. I've read many books which later were turned into movies. Everyone knows the book is always better because the movie never captures all the details outlined in the book, sometimes it changes the storyline completely. But to be disappointed that the race of the characters weren't what you expected is absurd and straight up racist. It also shows that many did not read the book carefully since the author described Rue as having "dark brown skin". Be sure to read the entire article and view other tweets posted on Jezebel. There is also a The Hunger Games Tumblr (unofficial) page which has many of the comments (positive and negative) from the movie and the book. America has come so far but still has so far to go.
