If your partner is a Cancer, you know how deeply they feel everything. That tough outer armor doesn’t seem to help. In their heart they want to be a hero, but are so vulnerable that they side-step many spontaneous opportunities, including with people they care about. The good news is that food is one thing your Crab enjoys completely – this is truly a passion, and it can help bridge those awkward gaps between both friends and lovers. In fact, the sign of Cancer rules over the stomach!

Before considering your menu, settle on a setting. Most Cancers would enjoy a brisk walk followed by a country style picnic with all the trimmings. Alternatively, if you’re questioning whether to bring your Cancer home or cook at their place, definitely go to their place. Cancers are “home bodies” and they’re more comfortable in their own figurative shell. You may even find that the crab wants to help in the kitchen – many are accomplished cooks who will revel in showing off every gadget in the pantry. This is actually a great ice breaker that appeals to the crabs collaborative demeanor and lets him or her revel in their hearth.

In thinking about your fare, remember that Cancers enjoy cooperative efforts, so look for playful finger food to begin your meal (and feed each other!). Crab stuffed mushrooms (wait is that cannibalism? LOL), deviled eggs, miniature sausage in brown sauce, or cheese stuffed meatballs are all great options.

Making the meatballs isn’t difficult. Take 80-20 ground meat and season it with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and if you have it some hickory or mesquite flavoring. Cut up some smoky gouda or another favorite cheese into tiny squares. Wrap the meat carefully around the cheese so it’s sealed then bake in the oven. Once the meatballs are done you can top them with steak or barbecue sauce. Watch your Cancer’s eyes smile!

When it comes to your main dish, try to make it as visually inspiring as it is flavorful. Cancer’s love artistry and originality, and do part of their eating with their eyes. What kind of recipe, you ask? Don’t be selfish, make shellfish (grin!). Here is one of my favorite plates that is incredibly simple but looks and tastes divine:

12 Large prawn (raw)

1/8 cup Extra virgin olive oil

Salt & pepper to taste

¼ cup parsley, fresh chopped

2 cloves garlic finely minced

1/4 cup Italian style breadcrumbs

4 tbs. butter, melted

¼ cup white wine

Wild rice for two (cooked)

Fresh Romano and Parmesan cheese

Directions: Devein your shrimp by cutting the back of the tail. Place the shrimp evenly spaced in a baking dish, pouring the olive oil over top. Mix parsley, garlic, salt/pepper and breadcrumbs together and sprinkle evenly over top. Bake for 20 minutes at 300 degrees (covered). Remove the covering and pour the butter and wine into the dish. Leave this for about 3-5 minutes. Place the shrimp decoratively on top of your wild rice, garnishing with fresh, thin curls of cheese and a snip of parsley.

Just one caution with all your dishes – don’t go too far out of the Crab’s comfort zone (nothing overly exotic or odd). That goes against the Cancerian’s cautious nature. Also be aware that Cancers will binge if they’re feeling threatened, so you may want to go easy on the sweets after a meal (think fresh fruit – it ties into your opening finger food course).

For beverages, if you know your Cancerian has been anxious or a little under the weather, Chamomile-jasmine tea with a hint of lemon proves to be a great pick-me-up. Even the aroma offers therapy to the crab’s spirit. Otherwise get in touch with your inner child (Cancers usually get playful with beverages). I advocate anything bubbly or that has a homey feel.

While you’re cooking it’s very important that you cook with joy and love. Pisceans are highly empathic – and in this case, they really ARE what they eat. If you’re grumpy or stressed about this meal, they’re going to become grumpy and stressed and the results won’t be pretty. Even worse, they’ll go on to try to “make it better”, being more concerned about your needs than their own. So keep it fun and playful – for background music think old rock n’ roll instead of sleepy instrumental. And absolutely no “downer” movies before or after the food – I suggest comedy or silly action adventure.

Pisceans can be very romantic, so consider preparing foods that you can feed each other, or a dinner that centers on a romantic theme. Either of these options won’t be lost on the Fish, and in fact you’ll probably hear about it for months to come. One fun example theme is red roses (a petal laden salad, rose soup, rose beef, rose liqueur or tea, and even a rose petal covered table). Roses are very edible and contain lots of vitamin C to keep your Piscean healthy!

If your Piscean likes cooking, definitely get them involved in the kitchen – they’ll LOVE tinkering with the flavors and overall presentation. Some Pisces really thrive in a culinary environment as it feeds their inventiveness and ability to think outside the box. If they don’t consider themselves a “good cook” then have them sit nearby and put in two cents now and again. Pisceans often feel overlooked, so your attention to his or her opinion is a very good element to the dining experience.

If you’re dining with others, remember that Pisceans are very sensitive. Friends with allergies or special diets need to be tended to or the Fish will be very upset. On the upside, if you can plan for those little alterations, your Piscean will appreciate the effort and enjoy good company.

Because the Piscean is highly responsible, combine your dinner plans with something that gives him or her relaxation. Offer a massage. Burn soothing incense. Get them to take off that red cape long enough to enjoy some pampering.

BEFF AND SCALLOP KABOBS
Serve with wild rice

Ingredients for the beef:
1/4 cup red wine

1/8 cup balsamic vinegar
1 clove garlic, minced

½ tsp ginger

1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper & kosher salt
3/4 pound steak, cut in 1 ” cubes
1 small red or green bell pepper, cut in 1″ squares (use half here)
1 small sweet onion cut in 1” squares (use half here)

Mix all the ingredients together and let them marinate over night in the refrigerator

Ingredients for the Scallops

¼ cup white wine

2 tbs. lemon

sprinkle of sugar

1 clove minced garlic

1 tsp. parsley & basil

salt & pepper to taste

Mix these with the remaining ½ of the peppers and onion, and likewise marinate in a separate container over night.

The next day put them on skewers switching between meat, onion, fish and pepper (if you wish you can also add grape tomatoes). Cook over a medium grill heat for about 8 minutes until done. Serve on a bed of bright fresh greens with a side of rice.

If you can find any edibles your Arian hasn’t tried they’ll be very excited to dig in! These folk don’t mind playing with their food (meaning interesting, eclectic finger food is also a nice choice. Examples here include mini lamb rolls using eggroll wrappers, Greek style deviled eggs, and a tofu fondue). While you might be tempted to repeat successful platters, don’t do them too often. The Ram will get bored and all your effort will be for naught. Because Arians are passionate communicators, small-bite food like an assortment of bruchetta will also prove very pleasing. This way your Aries can have great fare and talk in between each bite.

If you’re planning on eating out, I’d suggest seeking out signature diners – those nearly hidden gems that don’t blow your budget and still put out really good food. Remember however, that you should choose the restaurant as most Aries will choose what they think YOU want in a setting vs. something personally pleasing. Additionally, don’t be afraid to take a few friends along on the adventure. Aries appreciate good friendships where people share interests (in this case, food!)

Variety is the spice of life for your Ram, and speaking of spices they like seasonings that aren’t shy in the least. Note that the food need not be overly complex, just interesting and full-bodied (heat is sweet!). Here’s one sample recipe

Dressing:

3 tablespoons olive oil

1 1/2 Yoshida’s classic soy sauce

2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice

2 finely chopped garlic clove

1/2 teaspoon freshly grated ginger

3 tablespoons rice vinegar

red pepper flakes to taste

6 cups loose greens

1 cup bean sprouts

sesame seed sprinkle

Toss the greens and sprouts with the salad dressing and chill for about 1-2 hours. Mix well before serving and top with sesame seeds (or alternatively sesame croutons). This is a great accompaniment to tacos, a rack of ribs dripping with mango sauce, herbed goat cheese stuffed banana peppers, etc. Don’t be shy – give it a try!

In terms of plating and presentation – let your Ram set the table and help you dish out the food. They love to fuss artistically and have an uncanny knack for setting a really amazing table that’s also completely functional for everyone present. There will never be a huge centerpiece on the table, for example, because Aries’ can talk through it! Just remember to have all the elements of your place settings ready for the ever-impatient Ram otherwise they’ll loose focus and move on to something else.

What about beverages? Anything that comes in red is acceptable – red wines, red juices, pink flavored waters, etc.. In particular Arians seem to like energy drinks, probably because they run full-throttle through life and need that extra boost to stay on their game.

For dessert forego the traditional cakes, pies, cookies etc. Aries likes somewhat tangy-sweet blends. Lemon or grapefruit cheesecake is one option (dot the top with thin slices of a favorite fruit and a drizzle of honey). Or how about cranberry nut bars, perfectly suited for snacking while watching a movie together.

One last piece of advice – try to remember that an Arian lives “NOW” – it’s not about what happened in traffic, or during the preparations. It’s not about what you’re doing later that night either. Each moment in the meal is it’s own celebration, which is really satisfying if you love to cook. You’ll find Aries will tell you about every nuance – even those that aren’t quite right – with verbal skills suited to Shakespeare.

The easiest way to shop for a Capricorn is to understand their nature. The most important things to people born under this sign are their careers, stability and overall sensibility. Capricorns don’t get lots of things for themselves, so the gifts they receive will be treasured if the item is truly down-to-earth and pragmatic. Don’t bother with trendy chia pets (unless they grow herbs) or other fad items, for example. Instead find those items that help the Capricorn obtain goals like a solid planner for home and work.

Bear in mind that Capricorn has a frugal streak. He or she will be uncomfortable and awkward with overly expensive gifts. Value for the dollar is appreciated, value for the dollar that’s useful – even more so! Aquarius

If you’re shopping for an Aquarian this years, you have my sympathy. Aquarians are incredibly changeable and equally distractible. What interested them last week (or even 10 minutes ago) goes the way of the newest “pretty, shiny” thing or activity. Don’t despair, however. There is a solution – techno gadgets! For whatever reason Aquarians love the newest, coolest technological items, especially those that come with lots of bells and whistles to keep the Water Bearer from getting bored. Perhaps a web cam or a Nano would do the trick.

Convention isn’t the Aquarian’s strong suit. n some ways Aquarians are a bit like a hippie – bright colors, unusual lines, funky styles all seem to appeal to their artistic side. Tie die – yes! Work tie – no (unless it’s tyedied LOL). Even if your gift is simple, presenting it with a puzzle or poem that hints at what’s inside will both please and tease your Water Bearer.

One word of caution. Aquarians want something that show you actually thought about the gift for more than 5 minutes. Forget cheap, common, cookie-cutter items. Embrace the unusual, eccentric, mysterious, and wild. In fact, a CD with Motley Crue’s “Wild Side” might be perfect for your Water Bearer’s car.

Pisces

Pisces are the mystics and dreamers of the Zodiac, sometimes preferring fantasy to reality. With that in mind any gifts that allow them to escape for a moment (or a few hours) pleases the Fish greatly. Think about things like movie and play tickets, a short term get away, good fantasy novels, or even lush body care products with which your Pisces can pamper himself or herself.

Some key words to remember in shopping for a Pisces are beauty, creativity, sensuality, and spirituality. Also most Pisces have refined tastes, but hesitate to splurge on themselves. This gives you the perfect chance to step into the fray with an excellent wine, a gorgeous seascape painting, or a night on the town with lots of sights, sounds and flavors.

In the clothing department – go for shoes (or shoes and socks). Pisceans need supportive shoes but don’t spend the money for a really good pair (very often using that money for other members of the family or friends in need). Alternatively fuzzy slippers will make your Fish smile (especially if they are whimsical). Texturally, Pisces like fluid clothing – nothing that constrains, and it has to feel good against the skin. No itchy wool please.

Fish out of water also appreciate watery gifts. If you live near a beach, consider getting a gift certificate for jet skiing or sailing, for example. Inside the house, a salt water aquarium would be a huge hit.

If you’re scratching your head trying to figure out what to get the ever-metered Libra in your life, music is one great option. Nearly all Libras treasure music. Choose a CD that they can use in the car or office on more stressful days. Or if you’re not sure about musical tastes an I-Tune gift card will certainly work!

As an air sign, Libras have a well-refined sense of smell. They’re often sensitive to bad odors, so a small air purifier would be a wonderful asset. Alternatively, find some light, clean smelling incense (nothing too heady).

In terms of the other senses, visually your Libra responds to flow and color. If choosing a statue, for example, it should seem nearly lifelike and offer vivid hues. This concept extends into the Libra’s wardrobe – nothing too constraining (Libras like flexibility in clothing and people) and rich, distinctive colors.

Most Libras are very social creatures and love to talk so a new cell phone or a pre-paid package for the existing one would keep the Libra “in touch.” If your Libra also likes to entertain, then gather up some refined party gear for him or her. Sleek Champaign glasses, unique linen holders, and tasteful centerpieces are examples that awaken the Libra love of beauty and symmetry. For the romantic Libra, go with gourmet chocolate, a soft fuzzy wrap, or something that reflects an intimate story that only the two of you know and understand.

Scorpio

Scorpios are incredibly fun to tease with gifts. They revel in a good mystery and the longer the suspense goes on the better. If there is any way you can make a “treasure hunt” of sorts for the gift, that would be truly enjoyed by the sporty spirit of our Scorpion (and also keeps the suspense going). Speaking of mystery, books and films of that genre, or even memorabilia from a favorite story make Scorpios very happy. For clothing, Scorpios tend to be very discriminating and lean toward fashion trends. If its something that feels sexy and sultry, even better. Last but not least remember that Scorpios have both competitive and perfectionist edges. Giving them a game that challenges and maintains interest appeals to that spirited nature. Sagittarius

Don’t fuss too much when you’re wrapping your Archer’s gift. They’re not going to carefully pull off the tape and ribbons to re-use later. This is a grab-and-go moment! And what to put inside the wrappings? The first idea comes from Sagittarius’ love of the great outdoors. Anything that keeps them comfortable in nature will be more than welcome, like Alaskan mukluks, leg warmers, waterproof gloves, diving gear, and camping items.

Cancer

The keynote for shopping for a Cancer is meaningfulness. Items that you really put some thought into are far more appreciated than grabbing a gift certificate or pre-bundled goodie basket. Also hand made items are nearly always a hit! As you’re pondering and shopping remember that most Cancers love silver hues and tasty beverages. Maybe buy that long-awaited espresso machine (if its silver toned, all the better!).

Cancers tend to be very focused on hearth and home, and typically love anything that helps them in that space (especially with entertaining). From lovingly crafted family cookbooks and hand painted family tress to picture frames and photo albums, the sentimental nature of Cancerians responds to these types of gifts with glee. Speaking of sentimental, remember to gear your gift so it reflects your relationship with this person in an intimate way.

Other common Crab passions include gardening, gourmet food, and antiques. So, buy heirloom tomatoes, and antique garden tools and watch them swoon! If funds allow, toss in some really functional gardening clothes – Crabs love to feel comfortable.

One trait among Cancers that that they hold on to the past tenaciously. While this might not always be a positive attribute you can use that tendency in gift giving – make a memory box or a memento collage. Leo

Leo represents the King or Queen of the beasts. People born under this sign are dramatic, charismatic, and want to be the center of attention. When shopping for them – watch for items that show off any physical attribute – like a tight muscle shirt or a perfectly designed red and gold hair clip. Also know that your Lion is a creative sort. Where Leo was prone to love big bold gifts, Virgo is far more logical and grounded. Most Virgos do not like overly lavish presents. It makes them feel uncomfortable. So be pragmatic but clever. Instead of something flashy inside the box – make the wrappings themselves really eye-catching. This appeals to the detailed-oriented nature of Virgos, and “reasonable” gifts will please their economical-mindedness; something home made even more so.

Virgos appreciate cleanliness, so organic lotion and soap are nearly 100% sure to bring a smile. Also items that appeal to the studious Virgo mind will be appreciated (a few books by a favorite author is one good fit). Remember that your Virgo is probably a diligent worker so a leather organizer or computerized calendar software might just fit the bill.

Aries

The ram is a very active sign. People born in Aries typically like being fit and they’re even more focused on it when they know someone is going to be looking. So anything health-oriented is great – think food coop gift certificate, a work out DVD, or a gym membership. Additionally, as fire sign Aries love red things – from wine to clothing and everything in between items that favor deep-cranberry hues will please your Ram to no end. In fact, it might be fun to put together a red theme basket of some of your Aries’ favorite goodies. Tying to fire, also look for things that burn. Rich aromatic incense or uniquely crafted candles come immediately to mind.

The Ram nearly always loves flowers (yes, even the guys) but think along the lines of a potted plant so the beauty doesn’t die. The Ram has an artistic heart, and a true love of nature. Something that lives and grows combines two loves in one (hey, maybe a bonsai to feed that creative soul!). One word of warning, make sure the pot isn’t something overly sweet. The Ram isn’t a sign that goes for a lot of cutesy items. They’re more pragmatic than that. Instead, look to gold or bronze tone pots (this ties into fire too).

Speaking of pragmatic, take a look around your Aries’ living space. Are there any household items that could use a facelift? Unlike some signs, the Ram would appreciate good tool and treasure them forever. Try Shun knives, copper/stainless pans, or a new digital camera.

Next is Taurus.

Where the Aries has a practical side for gifts, flip that completely with Taurus – the more sparkle and sensual the better! I’d suggest a gift basket that has something the Bull can see, taste, touch, hear and feel. Go for a really lush cashmere scarf, gourmet candies or finger food, a small knick knack with lots of color, earthy perfume or cologne and a CD from a favorite artist. Having said that, if your budget is tight find ONE high-quality item and spend the whole budget on that item. Taurus does not like “over the counter” goods.

Something else your Taurus will love is if you give them a full body massage with some lush oils or creams. Turn down the lights, put on that CD, burn some incense and let your fingers do the talking. If your partner’s had any stresses lately (and who hasn’t) you’ll find they melt away. It’s a great way to present your gift! Follow the massage with a favorite meal made from scratch (or if you’re pressed for time, ordered from the Bull’s favorite restaurant). Remember to dress for the night! Let your Taurus drink you in with his or her eyes. What happens after that is up to you!

Finally we come to Gemini.

Because you’re dealing with the twins, you’ll find that there’s a lot of divergent possibilities (and what they’re really going to like may change moment to moment!). One thing is certain, Gemini’s have tons of personality and usually a lot of companions – so anything that helps them stay organized and in touch is one great gift idea (think PDA, cell phone, or a nice leather telephone book). The first two options also appeal to the gadget-passion Gemini’s seem to possess.

A must on your shopping list for the twins are books. I’ve found antiquarian tomes by favorite authors are usually a HUGE hit no matter which twin you have on hand. Second to that – consider an adventure of some type. Presenting your Gemini with an exotic vacation to historical or curious places will make them very happy, indeed.

Like Taurus, Gemini likes shiny and unique things so definitely look for rare and hard-to-find items (coins are one option). And if you’re hoping to occupy the Twins with some good brain food, get puzzles like soduko to feed that ever-hungry intellect.

When a woman’s Moon occupies the same sign as man’s Sun, this signals a real yin/yang relationship. The man sees her as the feminine part that completes him and vice versa.
