What is a pulley?

It drives the generator, gas distribution mechanism, car air conditioning and pump. If you need to install a new oil seal, you will need to remove the pulley. Dismantling is also possible if the pulley itself is damaged. They can be very different, and different cars have their own characteristics of this part.

A crankshaft with a pulley for a V-belt is the most common option in the automotive industry. They were equipped and equipped with buses, cars and trucks. The main advantage of this type is its versatility: it is possible to install on it not only the original, but also other types of belts.

To reliably combine the angle of rotation of the camshaft with the crankshaft, the outer rim of the wheel is equipped with teeth, and the inner surface of the belt is provided with grooves. How to unscrew the bolt / nut of the crankshaft pulley

The design solution in VAZ cars involves fixing the pulley with a massive bolt - with its removal, the most common problem for motorists. The difficulty lies in the location of the bolt: it is necessary to correctly position the key and apply force, which is extremely difficult.

To successfully remove the crankshaft pulley, you will need:

· wheel chocks;

· mounts;

· set of wrenches 38 or 36 and 10;

· screwdrivers.

Work is carried out on a lift or in a viewing hole. Before starting dismantling, it is necessary to check the crankcase ventilation system. If the system is contaminated, under the influence of excessive gas pressure, the oil seal begins to pass grease.

Work stages

To start removing the crankshaft pulley, you need to install the car on the site for repair or above the inspection hole and be sure to immobilize the car.

Next, you need to remove the cover, which closes the wires of the units, to provide access to motor parts to be replaced.

After that, loosen the tension of the drive chain and remove the electric generator and the power steering belt.

Crankshaft replacement

· Remove the air filter unit and the dirt shield.

· Loosen the nut on the generator.

· Loosen the nut and the alternator belt tension bolt.

· Loosen and remove the alternator drive belt. After that, the pulley is enough just to remove the pulley with just a few movements. It can also be removed with a removable device.

When removing the pulley, care must be taken not to damage the keyway. A loose fit of a part in a groove will greatly accelerate its wear.

Stuffing box replacement

Turning to dismantling and replacing the oil seals, you need to adhere to the work plan: Unscrew all the bolts and nuts that secure the drive cover to the pallet with a No. 10 wrench. Remove the drive cover together with the gasket and remove the gasket residues.
