Generation by Elizabeth Gleason Thompson is a 1979 sculpture that commemorates the hundreds of people buried at the free “potter’s field” of St. Anthony Township, now St. Anthony Village. While many of the tombstones have sunk into the ground, been removed or have crumbled away, this sculpture serves as enduring figure of the history of this acre of land.

From the dedication plaque:

The St. Anthony Township Cemetery, of “Potter’s Field,” was founded by Lewis Stone on July 14, 1853, to “be used exclusively for the uses of the public as a common and free burying ground forever and never to be used for any other purpose whatever.”

Elizabeth White, wife of Lewis Stone, died at the age of 54 years and 6 months. She was buried in this acre of former homestead farm and her tombstone lies north of this sculpture.

“Generation” commemorates the hundreds of persons buried here in one of the oldest cemeteries in Hennepin County.

This sculpture, by Elizabeth Gleason Thompson, was commissioned by the City of St. Anthony and made with the help of Girl Scout Troop 1586, the Raymond Haik family and others from the community. July 1979.

This 25-ton granite "Pioneers" sculpture was given to the City of Minneapolis by the Pillsbury family during the Great Depression. It served as the centerpiece of a park near the Central Post Office in Minneapolis called Pioneer Square. Created by John Karl Daniels, the sculpture was dedicated in 1936 on the 103rd anniversary of the birth of Charles Loring, the father of the Minneapolis Park System.

In the name of urban renewal the sculpture was moved in 1967 after being offered to anyone willing to relocate it, a move that was “greatly upsetting” to the then 90-year-old Daniels, according to Monumental Minnesota: A Guide to Outdoor Sculpture.

The sculpture now sits on the corner of 5th Avenue and Main Street NE and, in time, will be moved across Main Street into the newly constructed B.F. Nelson park on the east bank of the Mississippi River across from downtown Minneapolis.

This stelae by Foster Willey, Jr. near the intersection of 33rd Avenue NE and Central Avenue in Northeast Minneapolis features numerous rail motifs. The piece entitled, The 4020, illustrates the rich rail heritage that has been ever-present in the area since the early days of the City of Minneapolis.

As part of the Central Avenue reconstruction project through Northeast Minneapolis, the City of Minneapolis commissioned Foster Willey Jr. to create a number of stelae commemorating the history of the area. This stelae, found near the intersection of 35th Avenue NE and Central Avenue references the tradition of growing wheat in this area. At one time, it has been said, the wheat grown in this region was enough to feed the world. Much of the wheat grown in this area was carried south to the banks of the Mississippi River where it was ground into flour at large mills like the Washburn and Pillsbury A Mills.
