One problem immediately after I boot up for the first time is that the system does not able to read my sdcard. I had one 400GB sdcard always inside my laptop's sdcard slot as my storage drive. But Ubuntu has a problem reading this sdcard. Whenever I try to mount the sdcard in the file browser, I will get an error message saying that the filesystem is unknown.

After some digging the problem actually lies with the type of file system for my micro sdcard. It seems like for Linux Kernel 5.3, and below, it does not support exFAT file system out of the box. But there is a solution to this.

To fix this issue, I will need to install 2 packages for my Ubuntu to support exFAT file system. The command line to install these packages are:

sudo add-apt-repository universe
sudo apt update
sudo apt install exfat-fuse exfat-utils

Open your terminal by using Ctrl + Alt + T or open it from your program menu, and insert these 3 lines one by one.

After that, you can head over to your file explorer and click on the sdcard to mount it. It should work flawlessly.

I am running Ubuntu 16.06 client virtually under Windows 7 Virtual Box. As normal to all user running another operating system virtually, I need to access the data on my Windows 7 from my Ubuntu.

[the version of Virtual Box that I am running now is 5.1.6, Ubuntu 16.04, and updated (Oct 2016) Windows 7 Pro SP1]

Under Virtual Box setting, you can easily share the folder on Windows 7 that you wish to access from Ubuntu. Simply go to Devices > Shared Folders > Shared Folders Settings...

From there you can choose the folder on Windows 7 that you wanted to shared to Ubuntu.

You need to make sure that you check the box for Auto-mount and Make Permanent for Ubuntu to automatically mount the shared folder.

After OK to the setting, you will need to reboot Ubuntu for the change applied.

For my case I shared 2 folder/drive to Ubuntu from Windows 7. After rebooting Ubuntu, I can see those 2 folder appear (sf_F_DRIVE and sf_D_DRIVE) under my File Explorer (Nautilus).

However the problem here is once I click on either one of the link, it show the message: This location could not be displayed. You do not have the permissions necessary to view the contents of "xxxx".

After googling around, I found out that the problem is related to the current user (under Ubuntu) not added to the vboxsf group (which had permission to view the files). Therefor the fix for this is to add current user to the vboxsf group. The script for this fix:

sudo adduser $USER vboxsf

For the changes to be effective, you will need to Log Out on Ubuntu and re-Log In. After that you shouldn't be having problem accessing the shared drive/folder.

As I save most of my data in this NTFS Drive, I enabled the Mount at startup setting under Disk setup to allow Ubuntu to automatically mount it on startup.

This work flawlessly, automatically mounted, and I even use the folder under my NTFS drive as the sync folder for my Dropbox. No issue on reading and writing files.

Problem happens whenever I try to delete some files inside this NTFS drive. Initially I thought the problem is cause by the delete key on my computer, but what really happen is that Ubuntu do not allow moving files in NTFS drive to trash. If I use Shift+Delete, the files can be deleted permanently without any problem, just the "move to trash" not working correctly.

A forumer, drs305 from this link here, suggested to add in "uid=1000" to fstab file. What I do is I add it under the Mount Options menu and it is working correctly after a reboot.
For my case, my laptop is Lenovo Y500 (with dual GT650M), and ubuntu version 14.04 64-bit. From what I read from various forum, the problem happen because Pulseaudio from ubuntu assumed that the laptop comes with stereo mic, but the real case is that some laptop only comes with single mic (forums say that this problem will not happen for laptop with stereo mic, but I am not too sure about this). Somehow both left and right mic will cancel out each other in Pulseaudio causing no sound being received by Pulseaudio.

One way around this, which is working for me is to install PulseAudio Volume Control, and mute one side of the mic volume.

1. Install PulseAudio Volume Control from Ubuntu Software Center. Search for PulseAudio Volume Control and click Install.

2. Set one channel of the mic to 0% and another channel to 50%. Run PulseAudio Volume Control by searching it from Unity Dash. Jump to the 4th tab (Input Devices), click the top right Lock icon to unlock the left and right channel "lock" and turn the volume of one channel to 0%, and another channel to around 50%. The lock Icon on the top right will lock the volume adjustment of the left and right channel together, make sure it is unlocked.

3. Disable Skype to automatically adjust mixer levels. Go to the setting of Skype, under Sound Devices, uncheck the "Allow Skype to automatically adjust my mixer levels". Having this checked will somehow cause the volume to be increase and decrease which will lead to the same volume level for both left and right channel.

Also remember not to adjust the volume of the mic level from sound setting. If you need to edit the level of the mic, you will need to go back to the PulseAudio Volume Control. Adjusting the mic level from Sound setting will also lead to same level for both left and right channel.

4. Verify the functionality of the mic on Skype. Finally, test out the functionality of the mic by running the test call services.

You can find the guide for Windows here. As for Ubuntu, I will try to share the method I found and use.

Dropbox is a powerful software to allow files syncing, and sharing between devices, and users. Me myself owned 2 Dropbox account, one for personal use (sharing files between computer and devices), and another one for my work (sharing files between colleague).

Step 1: Install Dropbox in Ubuntu. There are many ways to do this, but I personally recommend going through Ubuntu Software Center. You can simply open Ubuntu Software Center, search for "dropbox" and click Install. It might take a few minutes, and you should have your Dropbox running.

Step 2: Create Shell Script to start multiple instance of Dropbox. You do not need to continue with the Dropbox configuration, or if you already have a Dropbox setup and running, just "quit" it. Create a .sh file, and store it somewhere. (I found this method from this page here, the original code provided do not work on ubuntu 14.04, and I edit some part of it)

The content of the .sh file:

#!/bin/bash

dropboxes=".dropbox-1 .dropbox-2"

for dropbox in $dropboxes

do

    HOME="/home/$USER"

    if ! [ -d "$HOME/$dropbox" ]

    then

        mkdir "$HOME/$dropbox" 2> /dev/null

        ln -s "$HOME/.Xauthority" "$HOME/$dropbox/" 2> /dev/null

    fi

    HOME="$HOME/$dropbox"

    /var/lib/dropbox/.dropbox-dist/dropboxd 2> /dev/null &

done

Step 3: Add the .sh file to be executed automatically on startup. You can go to your Startup Application list, and you should find a Dropbox in the list by default. Edit it and replace the command with the execution of your .sh file. For example I store my .sh file under "/mnt/Data/Software/ubuntu/SH/" folder, and the name of the .sh file is "dropbox.sh"

So, my edited Startup Application Command:

Step 4: Reboot and setup both Dropbox instance. Upon reboot, if everything is in order, you will have 2 instance of Dropbox setup running. I have no Idea how to know which are which, I just simply insert my first account to the 1st one that pop out. After setting up both account, you should have 2 dropbox syncing at the background.

So far both account is syncing properly, no crash, no issue. The only downside of this method is there is no way to know which icon is for which account, the way to overcome this is to store both "Dropbox" folder at 2 known places. To access the folder simply use file explorer to browse to the directory for each account.

Also take note that, there is no way to edit the name of the main syncing folder. It has to be always "Dropbox", and this will prevent putting both account's folder on the same folder.

Sometimes, when I have some process running in my laptop, I wish I just turn off the monitor and leave it running.

After some googling, I found this. Someone suggest to use the command:

sh -c "sleep 1 && xset dpms force off"

I tried execute it under terminal, and it works. To be able to make it controllable by a combination key on keyboard, I created a shortcut for it under Application Shortcuts editor.

I recently purchased D-Link DWA-171 USB WiFi dongle, more info here.

It is a mini size USB WiFi dongle that support dual band and comes with IEEE 802.11ac. I tried it on my Windows maching, it is working great, I can easily get the driver provided on its product page. But it does not work out of the box in my Ubuntu.

I previously found this page here, where it provide the driver for ubuntu, I downloaded, and try to make and install, but the make itself doesn't successfully complete. It shows 2 errors on the summary of the make.

After more searches, I found this discussion here, where people also discussing on how to install the driver for DWA-171, until I found this comment.

Text version for the code:

sudo apt-get install git
git clone https://github.com/abperiasamy/rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux.git
cd rtl8812AU_8821AU_linux
make
sudo make install
sudo modprobe 8812au

I followed it and now it successfully installed. I guess the difference between the method above and the method of downloading the driver from its wikidevi page is the 2nd method actually using the latest version of its driver, and the its wikidevi page might still carrying its older version of driver.

Update 161005

The original method above seems not works for 5GHz network. To support 5GHz network, please use the updated command:

Whenever I tried to run Update Manager, it will pop out a message box saying "Waiting for jockey-backend to exit". I believe this is a bug of ubuntu 11.10.

I found the solution for this problem from http://naveenubuntu.blogspot.com/2011/09/waiting-for-jockey-backend-to-exit.html, and you simply need to follow these few steps to manually end the jockey-backend and allows your ubuntu to update software cache.

What is jockey-backend ?

Jockey is a tool for installing third-party hardware drivers.

Jockey provides the infrastructure and the user interface for finding
and installing third-party drivers which are applicable to the computer.
This includes drivers which are added or updated after the release of a
distribution, or drivers which cannot be included into the distribution
for various reasons (CD space limitation, licensing problems, etc.).

Solution :
You only need jockey for enabling restricted drivers, afterwards you can safely disable it.

Open Terminal and type following commands:

1) To get into root mode
    sudo -i

2) To check the process id of jockey
    ps -e | grep jockey

Output: 2982 pts/0 00:00:00 jockey

remember the process id(2982)

3)Type the following to stop/kill the process

  sudo kill -9 [process_id]

sudo kill -9 2982

Install Google Chrome on ubuntu 11.10 (64-bit)

I just finish installing a fresh copy of Ubuntu 11.10 64-bit. I found the solution from http://www.google.co.uk/support/forum/p/Chrome/thread?tid=381d28fd49d3fc52&hl=en, the workaround for this is to install Google Chrome via Terminal. The instruction:

Step one: Download chrome to your Download Directory from http://www.google.com/chrome

Step Two: Open Terminal ( Ctrl + Alt + T )

Step Three: Run this command:
sudo apt-get install libnspr4-0d libnss3-1d libxss1 libcurl3

I guess this step is to install some required libraries for Google Chrome.

Step Four: Run this other command (Not Optional)
sudo dpkg -i './Downloads/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb'
For this step, please modify the command if your downloaded Google Chrome installer is not located in your Downloads folder. For me the Google Chrome installer is located under my Desktop, so the command will be:
sudo dpkg -i '/home/tph/Desktop/google-chrome-stable_current_amd64.deb'

Step Five: Hit the "Super" Key and search for Chrome.

After following all the steps, I had my Google Chrome running nicely under my Ubuntu 11.10. Thanks to Luke Woods.
If you wish to access files on another drive/partition, you will have to open it or mount it. There is not much problem about that one, but the problem comes when you have auto started program that need to use the files in the non-primary drive. For me, the problem happen when I use Dropbox. I store my dropbox files in my Data drive, and when it auto started when Ubuntu started, it will pop out an error saying that it can't find the dropbox folder, because the Data drive is not yet mounted. In this guide, I will shows on how to easily enable the auto-mount for your non-primary drive.

1st step is to go to Ubuntu Software Center, and search for an application called MountManager. Install it.

After you install it, don't launch the application 1st, now, mount the drive you wish to auto-mount. After that, launch the MountManager, it should ask for your password.

Select the drive (for auto-mount) under the device. Under the setting at the right side:

Click "Show default options"

Change the "Who can mount the partition" to Everyone

Make sure the "Mount the partition during start of the operating system" is checked.

Don't do any other changes (if you accidentally change something else, restart the MountManager application).

Now click on "Partition" (top left corner) and click Apply. It should ask for confirmation, simply proceed.

So, I am going to show the step by step on how to activate Computer (it is called Computer in Ubuntu) icon and Trash (Recycle Bin in Windows) icon on your desktop.

First of all, open Applications > System Tools > Configuration Editor

If you can't find this Configuration Editor under your System Tools, don't worry, you can activate it at the Main Menu Preferences. Goto System > Preferences > Main Menu

Then at the Main Menu there, goto System Tools and check the Configuration Editor.

Go back to the Configuration Editor at Applications > System Tools > Configuration Editor. At the Configuration Editor, browse to apps > nautilus > desktop. Then check the computer_icon_visible and trash_icon_visible. It is up to you either you want to enable Home icon and Network icon.

Then you should have the familiar Computer icon and Trash icon on your Ubuntu desktop.

Install a Google Chrome 64-bit?

Ok, my favorite internet browser is Google Chrome, I use it as my default browser in Windows 7. Switching from Windows 7 to Ubuntu, of course I install back Google Chrome; sync to my email account, I get all my bookmark, and extension same as what I have in Windows 7's Google Chrome.

From some blog I read, Google release their 1st 64bit Google Chrome Beta for Linux, (http://www.pcmech.com/article/google-chrome-64-bit-version-available-however/). Which also means that I am eligible to try out the latest Google Chrome 64 bit. Even though it is Beta/Unstable version, why not I try it out.

After some search on the internet, I found this http://www.webupd8.org/2009/08/how-to-install-64bit-chromium-google.html, where they include the link to download Google Chrome 64-bit .deb file for ubuntu (download Google Chrome 64-bit .deb: http://www.google.com/chrome/intl/en/eula_dev.html?dl=unstable_amd64_deb). As you know, I am very new to Ubuntu, so I guess the .deb file is an installer format for Ubuntu, similar to .exe file in Windows. Besides the page above, there are a lot of other pages that guide you on how to build a 64-bit Google Chrome from its source file, which I think is quite complicated. So, I choose the easiest one, double click on the .deb file.

For those who are using 64-bit Ubuntu like me, you can have a try on the latest 64-bit Google Chrome unstable version. Before you install the 64-bit version, make sure you remove the 32-bit version of Google Chrome, or the Ubuntu Software Center will warn that the 64-bit installation cannot be completed because there is conflicts with the older Google Chrome (32-bit).

(Print Screen of Google Chrome on my Ubuntu, Version is 10.0.628.6 dev)

So, have a try!

Download Google Chrome 64-bit .deb:
The Terminal window is often a barrier for new Linux users blocking them from effectively using the Linux desktop. Many users have been using point and click methods of desktop navigation since MS-DOS in the 80s. The idea of typing text into a command window can be a bit overwhelming for todays average computer user but it shouldn't be. Today we'll be using the Ubuntu 8.10 desktop which is available for download here.

The advantages of using the command-line Terminal to accomplish tasks are great. The speed of using the terminal in a fraction of that it takes to accomplish the same task graphically. Try installing a package using the synaptic package manager. That would include at least six clicks of the mouse and typing in the root password once. Or you could use the terminal by clicking on Applications --- Accessories --- Terminal. (Kubuntu users click Menu --- System --- Konsole, Xubuntu users click Applications --- Accessories --- Terminal) Once you've opened the Terminal with your first click you can type
sudo apt-get install amarok

Then enter the root password and that's it. You package will be downloaded and installed from the terminal window.

From this example you can see the difference in speed, but another advantage of using the Terminal window is the return you get when something goes wrong. If you're using the GUI desktop to accomplish a task and something happens you generally get a one line description but if you're using the Terminal you will receive a more in-depth description of your problem. Yet another advantage to using the command-line Terminal is the universal element that giving commands holds over using a GUI. As you can see from even trying to locate the Terminal, the path to accomplishing a task with the GUI may vary when you're using Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu etc. While Terminal commands aren't always the same in different distributions, you can issue the same commands for Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu, Xubuntu and count on their effectiveness.

If you prefer to point and click instead of typing any commands into the Terminal you may find shelter under a few other Linux distributions like Mepis, Linspire and a few others. And also this all depends on what you use your computer for. If you play Solitaire and use the Internet to interact with your friends and that's it, it's possible you may never need the Terminal window on Ubuntu.

Lets take a look at some very simple commands on the Ubuntu desktop that will allow us to effectively accomplish some small tasks. After you've opened the Terminal window you can start typing in the commands. Below is a list of some useful commands and what they are used for.
If it is too slow, or a program or process is using too much resources I might use the Windows Task Manager to kill it. So, its like Windows Task Manager is a must have stuff in an operating system, for me.

Switching from Windows to Ubuntu, I found my self do sometimes right click on the taskbar looking for Task Manager, until I found out that I am now using Ubuntu. So, for all the Ubuntu newbie like me, there is a Ubuntu version of Task Manager, don't worry, just need to get yourself use to it.

Go to System > Administrator > System Monitor.

I will say it is quite similar to WIndows Task Manager, called System Monitor. With System tab showing the information about the Ubuntu system, the place to check the version of your current Ubuntu install, Processes tab, similar to Windows Task Manager Processes, and File Systems tab, where you can see all your drive informations.

Another thing to share here is, the System Monitor here is not accessible through the Ctrl-Alt-Del key. These key will only Shut Down the Computer menu.

It is actually a Multiboot boot loader that let you choose to boot into different version or safe mode of your Ubuntu (more info here).

I am just a beginner in Ubuntu and I am not very sure about the usefulness of this feature in Ubuntu. For me, it is just something the would increase my PC boot time. The problem is if you do not choose or press "enter" key at this GNU GRUB page, it will need to wait for 10 seconds for it to auto choose the default selection. So, what I would like to share here is how to edit the default selection and the "auto selection" timeout/countdown (I am not sure about the proper way of calling it).

If you try to search for "GNU GRUB auto selection" or any similar keyword, there is bunch of guide teaching you how to modify or edit the GNU GRUB default selection and the auto selection timeout. Most of them will instruct you to edit a file called "/boot/grub/menu.lst", and edit some lines in this file. For a very newbie like me, it is not always easy to do all those editing using command-line terminal.

So, what I found after some digging and some try and error, I found a very nice software called StartUp-Manager. You can use command-line to do the installation, but I will rather shows you the easiest way to do this. Go to your Ubuntu Software Center, at your application menu.

Then, Search for "startup-manager", and install it. (I already have mine installed)

After the installation, the StartUp-Manager should be located under System > Administration > Startup-Manager.

Now you can adjust the Timeout, Default selection, Display, and lots more about your computer startup.
