Okay so we got water on the Moon and we got to know it quite a long time after the Moon Bombing. Which apparently is the reason why Google has taken the time to actually change its logo. Looks nice, perhaps I am big fan of the Sky, space and NASA but I am still wondering what more has NASA discovered and how rich is all the data those bombings have revealed to the space agency.

The Moon bombings might not have gone in vain as all television networks alerted the audiences of NASA finding water on the Moon. The LCROSS mission had uncovered the water on Moon last month in the Cabeus cater on Moon’s South Pole. The image released shows the explosion 20 seconds later and the plume sort of appears to be… a face [watch closely please]. Whatever that explosion may look like, NASA says it has hands on massive amounts of useful data, meaning we might have some other interesting things coming out for us in due time.
One question, is this water drinkable? I mean the astronauts might need some to kill their thirst in later missions.

What exactly is this new strategy of Rupert Murdoch? I mean why would he make News Corps’ content invisible to search engines? Okay, have the ever hungry lovers of News Corps subscribe to get the same news which they can elsewhere? Too many questions, but to be honest this is such a lame move, given that almost every other news service is leveraging the power of search engines to generate that extra bit of traffic along with a few bucks. Apparently Murdoch thinks Google users usually come to the site, thanks to a search, read one article and then disappear. So I guess he is trying to state that every other service should do the same? Bad move, and I hope he reverses it before News Corp is left to be nothing but some once glorified name in the next few years to come.

Now I didn’t know that Google GOing ahead to call its programming language Go would dig out some old ruins. Apparently Google has either been too careless with this or it really wanted to use its massive influence to overrun Frank McCabe’s efforts. Yes, McCabe has stepped out with solid proofs that state he already had a programming language by that name along with a book called Let’s Go! Now this is really annoying given that all your hard efforts just go in vain given that Big Daddy has chosen the same for his language. Google on the other hand is just quite, rather claims to be unaware of any such name to exist.

While Google must have taken quite some time to get rid of the beta label, Microsoft has been pretty quick with that. Microsoft removed the beta label off Bing. This is primarily for the UK users and offers them localized search. The other important announcement includes the release of Bing Maps for the UK, meaning that users will no longer be directed to Multimap. While all this sounds impressive enough, the homepage will also feature photos of favorite spots in the UK.

With all the confusion surrounding the Google Chrome OS project, the Google might just announce its launch in the coming week. The biggest issue to present remains the shadowy nature of the hardware drivers which its engineers desperately try to work on. The other bit of rumor also states that Google is pushing hardware manufacturers to help create drivers for them. Now, this OS might be one of the best decisions by Google of late, but if this driver issue isn’t brought to attention the whole thing might just fall apart. This indicates the obvious, Chrome OS will not be functional on any device out there and might be fully supported on a select few perhaps Lenovo, HP, to name a couple.

Myxer has achieved a milestone as it crossed the 10 million ringtone mark that it had provided for the iPhone users. Users can download its tones in either of the two ways. Oh here is Reddit in the news, I had almost forgotten about the service! How unthankful of me, to forget the site that sent quite some traffic here. However the service is testing a new system; sponsored links, which means that anyone can buy a link on the homepage. This is definitely going to get you a bulk of traffic given that you have the cash available to buy one (that will be $20 a day for a 10% slot out of the 24 hours). Sounds quite a deal given that the 10% would bring in quite some traffic through the link.
The test is more generic, meaning that you don’t get to target a particular category at Reddit, but that is only temporary. The plan is to introduce it for each category so advertisers can target specific categories that match their interest. And that doesn’t mean this link is popular, users will have the freedom to vote for the link too; which is good for the advertiser as a significant number of votes may actually win you a longer time slot that what you have paid for.

In bid to expand into the networking industry, the leading computer manufacturer HP will be acquiring 3Com. The idea is perhaps to counter Cisco whose networking products dominate the industry. 3Com also sells the similar devices. The other reason could be to break the hegemony of one vendor in the networking scene and Cisco is a perfect example while 3Com on the other hand has been stagnant in growth. The vendor can very well utilize HP’s global influence to gain market share. The acquisition will cost HP $2.7 Billion.

Online real estate firm; Redfin that enables users to search for real estate and also provides brokerage services has bagged a healthy $10 Million. The funding came from existing partners which include DFJ, Madrona Venture Group and was led by Greylock Partners. The service has been doing pretty good over time stepping over to profitability earlier this year and crossing $20 Million in revenue. The site is pretty easy to use as it lets you browse through real estate and set up a schedule online saving you on all those calls. The service, while not much popular in the real world real estates, is definitely winning huge followers since its launch in 2006.

Rumor has it that Sony Computer Entertainment is planning to launch yet another Firmware update for the Playstation 3 console as done before. What sets this firmware aloof and hence worthy of catching the attention is that this time it would include a Facebook integration, along with some general enhancements in its photo viewing option and an option to customize your game card.

The holiday season is quite far but I guess Google is just a bit too hasty on giving away to the people. The giant is planning to extend its free WiFi to a full 47 airports. That is not it, there is a plethora of more, the most impressive is the donation; any airport that manages to muster $250 in donations via the WiFi will get $15,000 worth in cash to donate to a local charity. The free WiFi comes from Lilypad, Time Warner Cable, Boingo, Advanced Wireless Group in collaboration with other airports that also offer wireless services. Sounds interesting, I just hope you don’t get hooked to an interesting conversation on Twitter or Facebook to actually miss a flight.

Resmus Lerdof, the man who founded PHP and had been long a part of Yahoo has like many other key people there has called it quits. He had joined Yahoo back in 2002 and had developed the PHP engine in 1995 and it has since then being the key language in developing pages. Its surprising that the man who had been since so long been associated to an organization takes a leave. But I guess there is little room for this surprise as Yahoo has lost many more and much senior execs in the last year or so. Wonder if this is actually bringing in new people who are as dedicated to Yahoo as the stalwarts.

Storage is not a issue for Google. I mean it offers 7GB for Gmail users, 40GB for Picasa users at $5 a year. And I guess Google just realized that it isn’t enough so its offering users 16 Terabytes of storage which is enough to store around 8 million high resolution photos. Don’t dance yet, for this isn’t free and you will have to pay $4,096 a year. Of course this isn’t for people like me and you who are doing general stuff and still utilize a mere 11% of their Gmail storage in more than half a decade. But those who do need that huge an amount, can definitely afford the price. There are varying models as well: 8 TB for 2,048 and 4TB at $1,024 a year. Sounds good enough, especially if you have loads of things you wont to access from anywhere.

Get Twitter and Yahoo to cross and you will have Yahoo Meme. Alright that was quite pervert of me but Yahoo continues to expand its product. It earlier launched the Spanish and Portuguese version of the platform and today it went a step ahead with the release of the Indonesian version [Bahasa]. The winning aspect of Yahoo here is that it expands the character limit to 2,000 while that of Twitter is a mere 140 characters. But is this character issue something to make a service actually stand against Twitter? I don’t think so, maybe there is a lot that needs to be done to make Yahoo Meme rise higher otherwise it may do great in a few regions but fail when it comes to the globe.

The bold vision of Sun Microsystems all of a sudden just lost it all and therefore the sun will set on it. I am talking about Zembly; the project it launched a year or two back and was set to provide an app development platform that would help bring forward innovative ideas. But I guess those were just boastful words and it failed the expectations big time and users have been notified that it will suspending the service on November 30th. One exec exit a fortnight is the schedule followed at Yahoo. We have seen a massive migration of key players in the Yahoo management in the last year or so and today another made his exit. Its SVP of strategic data solutions group, Bassel Ojjeh has left Yahoo. Well to put it more correctly, he had left Yahoo a few days back. This brings me to another useful news that the man today made an investment in ArabCrunch.NET a social networking platform which is a venture by ArabCrunch. Ojjeh had co-founded DMX Group, a data mining and warehousing firm which was acquired in 2004 by Yahoo.

While free is definitely a winner on the Web, but if you grow up and have quite some following, you are bound to put a price. Especially if you are providing the best or one of the best service, users wont mind paying a few bucks. Babbel today released version 2.0 of its translation service and language learning platform and is available in major languages including, English, French, Italian, Spanish and German. The bad part, it will now be abandoning its freemium model and only the first part of each course will be available for free while full access would cost $6.65 and $11.95 a month.
Well I agree that many users wont like the idea of the paid model. But you can’t really blame Babbel and others who charge you for providing licensed works.

The bruises and scars of the recession are going to take a lot of time to heal and while it heals, it will give more wounds to many. Today Sprint announced that it will be be saving around $350 Million in the fourth quarter and to achieve this it will be be laying off employees. The number of these layoffs will be between 2,000 to 2,500 and this round of layoffs will be completed by December 31 this year. The mobile carrier has already shut down 27 call centers given a phenomenal fall in call volume. Sad for the employees, especially those who will end a year with a layoff. Hope the new year brings glad tidings for them.

Users can buy credits for this right from the home page and get to save 95% on what they would actually end up paying for international calls on the mobile. NimbuzzOut is available for the iPhone, iPod Touch and Symbian mobiles with plans to come out for other platforms as well by years end and will utilize the 3G and WiFi for making calls around the globe. Quite an impressive move and I guess with more people looking forward to cheaper methods of communicating, this will definitely bear fruits for Nimbuzz.

There is a new iPhone worm that is nibbling through the device and is called iKee. There has been no great threat from it as it simply changes the background picture on the device putting up the image of Rick Astley, and the link directs them to his song on YouTube. While it is harmless compared to other attacks we are notifying our users of it just shows how vulnerable we are to these, particularly to the iPhone users. Why has it got people in its grip? Well the worm feeds on the poor security of the device and as many as 100 devices have been infected by the worms creator, Ashley Towns.
I guess the jailbroken devices are more prone to this, given that many people who do so usually don’t pay attention to security issues. The password is usually left as default [username: root and password: alpine]. This vulnerability is brought to light when they install the SSH program for jail breaking etc, leaving them vulnerable. I just wonder who exactly is more responsible for this? I guess there are developers too, to a certain extent, why? Because a few of them (remember not all) are often careless in seeing through these issues. Anyways, as always, I would suggest users to avoid Jailbreaking their devices, I mean, isn’t the App Store enough?

I dislike it when companies change names every now and then. Why? Are they superstitious that a particular name is cursed or something? DotBlu made me ask all this, once again, as it has done so for the third time all the way from BlueBet to DotBlu and now to TownHog. What’s interesting here is that the service had given up on all hopes and was confirmed dead last month but not anymore as it rises from the dead branded as TownHog. The working changes as it make a shift from being a betting platform. TownHog works simply as it features a deal in almost every city on a daily basis and you can recruit buyers from numerous social networks like Facebook and Twitter or even using the email. Sounds fun enough and we hope that this is the last time it goes about changing the name or ending up in a grave.

If a new app is not made available at the App Store, I can gulp it down and say it just didn’t get green. But a seasoned and a very popular one that has been around for quite some time vanishes, it looks odd. The TweetDeck app has seen the same, and has vanished from the scene after being around for quite some as the Twitter client on the iPhone. The reason? Appears it wasn’t bug free and caused a whole of crash and burn to have Apple pull it out. Though the bug free version has been submitted, but as it is with Apple, it wont rush with things and take all time to ensure it is bug free. I hope the update is out soon enough for the TweetDeck fans.
By the way if it doesn’t, why don’t you all just discard the iPhone and make another investment with the HTC? Just a thought.

Skype founders, Janus Friis and Niklas Zennström are putting their years of experience to push another startup: Rdio. Rdio is a digital music startup waiting for its launch and has quite a team to make it successful enough; including Carter Adamson the former GM of desktop products at Skype. The startup is still in the shadows and there isn’t much on it. I just hope it is able to perform as impressively as Skype.

Facebook continues to grow but there is something wrong big time with MySpace. Not only is it lagging behind Facebook but the social network is doing so bad with its traffic that it might actually cost News Corp $100 Million. The once leading social network had signed up a $900 Million ad deal with Google back in 2006. The deal covered up the $580 Million cost of MySpace but that will cost News Corp dearly as it fails to maintain a minimum traffic level. Sadly MySpace is the only entity of News Corp which has registered a very negative output compared to others it owns. So what exactly is going to happen with MySpace? It’s definitely not going to shutdown, but what is going to open up the Pandora box of success for it? Facebook committing suicide perhaps.

Facebook continues to grow exponentially. Oh please it’s a cliché for sure as the social network grows like a wild creeper without a stop while all other social networks continue to be dwarfed next to it. It now has crossed the 325 million mark and I am sure by the time I finish writing this piece and you end reading this and ReTweeting it, a thousand or so more would have joined it. Why this growth? In my opinion the rapid rise is primarily because it is not bound to be a network for a particular age group, although it started solely for the purpose to connect college students. You will find everyone, be it a young kid or a 50 year old guy, from absolutely useless quizzes to extremely addictive applications, there is every reason there for anyone to join the network.
I just wonder what or when is it going to stop? Any clue or prediction, leave it in the comments please.

Twitter is making its interface more active and bringing the features the third party desktop applications offer to its page. We have seen the filtering of followers with the List feature and today it tested the retweet with a few users. We have been noticing this for quite some time which is pretty good, given that it earlier relied solely on third party apps/developers to keep an eye if a tweet has already made it to a stream. With this feature, it will show the original tweet plus have the retweets appear under it as roots.

Bad day, very bad day at Microsoft as it cut short its staff by 800 or so employees. The worst part: firing Don Dodge, Director of Business Development for Emerging Business Team. Why exactly did that happen or needed to happen? The guy has been one of the most active people at Microsoft attending numerous conferences and events that are startup focused and to be honest it is a huge error laying off such an active person. The guy is definitely not slurring abuses at Microsoft and still honors the company, but in my opinion he simply wasted his time and energy for a company that didn’t return him with the same favor.

When do you know that your service is the best? When users are actively engaged with it, something that’s quite a drawback with Twitter and many other services. Lately the micromessaging service has been making some efforts to make it more interactive with the launch of List feature and widget, etc. Today however it made another important move with the release of Notifications, though it is only available to a limited number of users at present. What it does is simply notify users when ever there is a new tweet in the line by indicating it just above the tweet list. Of course with the notification right there, users will be more active and might just be triggered to see what the new tweet is about and spent a few extra minutes on the site. Good work, I say Twitter is making itself better by the day.

It was only a week back when we informed that the apps at the App Store had crossed the 100,000 mark. Today however, Apple confirmed the numbers as the official report confirmed reached the milestone. And that is more than impressive in just a little under a year and a half. The chart above shows category wise distribution apps at the app store and the games lead the shares with a 16% share followed by books and entertainment at 13%.
So what are the predictions for the coming year? When is it crossing the 200,000 mark?

There appears to be some problem with Gmail as users log in to find their inbox with zero unread emails. The reason? Well a bug is behind all this, minor or major I am not sure, but the problem is like sporadic and not widespread. The problem is primarily owing to the way Google handles the IMAP message body, but I guess users should not worry about their accounts being hacked or something of the sort and I hope it is fixed quickly.

The authorities found that the search giant was involved in a tax fraud. The authorities require Google to pay taxes on the revenue it generates through the registered companies in the country. Google on the other hand says that no wonder it leads the search market in Turkey, but the entire ad network is based in Ireland, which exempts it from paying taxes to Turkey. There has been no final settlement on the issue and both parties are still involved in talks for some sort of settlement. The Traffic Server is pretty efficient itself handling more than 30,000 requests and at present caters to more than 400 TB of data each day. Along with that yahoo will also be updating its Distribution Hadoop, which is at work across its data centers and will numerous new features and fixes for bugs. The same Hadoop provides framework for Yahoo’s services like Yahoo Mail, Search, etc.

Not all news from Germany can be bad news for all and this one is definitely good for Yahoo as Yahoo signed up a much needed deal with O2 Germany to become a mobile search and services partner. The bad part is that Google was previously the partner for the same. With this O2 subscribers will be able to access Yahoo Search across its mobile portals and Yahoo will offer sponsored ads along with the results. I just wonder how effective would this be given that it will only place Yahoo’s search box on O2 site. I mean who uses that when you have Google which is so widely used? As for facts, Google still has a 70% mobile market share in Germany compared to Yahoo 8.2%.
