Compiling Public Data Isn’t Hacking: Facebook’s Strategy Exposes Public Information of 100 Million Users

I was up talking to a friend a couple of days on how writing about Facebook was the biggest pain in life and the adverse psychological problems it got me into. But you can’t help not talking about it, given that the third of everyone online is on the social network. Plus Facebook has more to do with simply connecting people, its more to do with their lifestyles and their privacy, which is the biggest concern.

I had been reading about the latest turn of events on Facebook about Ron Bowes making user data publically available. That data was of over 100 million users who are a part of the social network. But before I proceed let me state that Ron Bowes is not a hacker in my opinion. Why? Well

He hasn’t broken security on social network
Didn’t hack any account
All he did was make use of publically available data on the social network

We are well aware on how boldly Facebook emphasizes users to share their data publically on the Web. If you aren’t aware on what I am talking about, try and explore your privacy settings or simply make you share a status update with everyone. Once done, this information is available for anyone to make use of, what’s needed is simply a smart brain to compile the data and out it out to public. Of course it is unethical but things as such are important to slap back at Facebook. Something which Facebook must learn from.

Bowes hasn’t taken up any user data, simply put public information together in one piece and that for me is not enough to accuse him or label him as a traitor. what needs to be told here is that your data is not yours the minute you signed up for it and no matter how strict your privacy settings are, all of it is at Facebook’s disposal. need an escape? Quit Facebook.

Facebook Integrates A Pointless Change: Divides Updates Into Status, Ask A Question, Photos And Links

In its latest frenzy to personalize and get more popular with its users, Facebook has finally rolled out Questions. What good is it? Primarily worth nothing, simply gives a new word or phrase to the status updates and ensures maximum user participation, the idea simply put is about divide and better engage users of the social network.

What’s different her is that previously users could only post a status update on their homepage and nothing else, the latest design gives users the options to post a status update, ask a question, add a photo or share a link with friends. I guess it’s nothing than just simplifying the Tabs on top of your status bar and giving users a much quicker link to the mentioned Facebook functions.

Update Status

This isn’t new and it lets you do exactly what you had been doing on Facebook since its inception. You can modify privacy settings as usual and share what’s the most recent happening at your side.

Add Photos

Access the numerous options on Facebook when it comes to sharing photographs. You can create an album, upload photos from your hard drive or simply take a quick snap with your webcam. The benefit here is that you don’t need to leave the profile or homepage like you previously did and share photos with connections staying where you are.

Post A Link

You can already do that on the status update, but if you are really into putting this up as a link specifically.

Ask A Question

This had been in test for quite some time and as already said, the feature enables Facebook to better engage your friends, friends of friends and it does something more sinister. If you notice the underlined section, Facebook makes your question available for all, meaning everyone can see it and quite obviously it is available for the search engines as well.

Given how users of the social network crave sharing statuses, news, links and questions, it is surely a smart move from Facebook to roll this one out. But honestly it only brings benefits to Facebook, primarily for the fact that most users worry about having their content available to public search engines and they would preferably want to keep this question thing amidst friends and their own trusted social circle.

Amazon Introduces A Smaller, Faster And Cheaper Version Of Its eBook Reader: Kindle With WiFi

The future of books lies in ebook readers one reason why so many players are stepping in the arena of rolling out devices to read and publish books to. Amazon started it off with its Kindle, Apple has taken it to the next level with the iPad and the battle continues. It will now be for more compact, yet powerful devices and Kindle has already got itself a sleeker, faster and a much better version of the ebook reader.

The latest release of Kindle maintains its 6 inch reading area while improving the contrast by almost 50 percent which is quite a big improvement given reading from device in sunlight was a bit of an issue. Other than that the pages are faster to turn over and with almost double the storage size. All these count a lot when you need to carry on all your favorite books within the device and use it as your personal digital library. Another winning aspect to it is the immense improvement in the battery life which can last up to a month.

The device is set to roll out by August 27 across 140 countries and the WiFi only version will be available for a cheap $139 compared to the Kindle 3G version worth $189 and the DX Model for $379. Of course all these devices cater to varying user needs, it will be interesting to see how much are consumers willing to pay for a dedicated reading devices. I mean $379 for a DX Model is too much for a reader and the better option would be to go for the iPad at a higher rate and with more functions. Err, am I thrusting my opinion/choice on consumers?

What would you prefer to buy? A cheap $139 WiFi only Kindle or the more expensive DX Model?

I know I have badly mutated the nursery rhyme but that is exactly what the story is about Facebook. Today there is another scam spreading through your social inboxes and growing on clicks from the careless people out there. As always, all we can say is that users need to be aware of any message that talks about A Shocking Video. The Message is as follows:

If you fall prey and click the link you will be taken to a malicious Facebook app which would then require you to fill in multiple survey forms before you are to be shown the life saving video. That’s just one of the many and there has been another similar case of a viral shocking video of a teacher that has been taped as she killed a boy. What ever the case be just avoid clicking on anything suspicious, especially my dear click happy friends.

In case you do fall prey the best thing to do is identify the malicious app and remove it from your Facebook Account.

When you talk about Apple, and more importantly the wide range of computing devices it has to offer you aren’t just confined to traditional computing. I mean writing codes, editing, playing games or even browsing; anything to do with Apple eventually become a way of life. It revolutionized music with the iPod, the mobile genre with its iPhone and now the next step ahead with their iPad. All these products have almost everything to offer the users out there and while the price me be significantly higher than other similar devices but the products are worth every penny you pay.

Coming over to the iPad, which Apple released back in April this year. The device has done phenomenal business, selling over 3 million devices in just over three months, breaking Apple’s own records. Many would use it for a better gaming option, others consider it a powerful tool to browse better than they do on their iPhones but the latest release of the iOS4 and the coming of the iBookstore, the iPad might actually be heading on to become one of the most powerful publishing devices for authors. I am not kidding, the books published for the iBookstore, [if kept strictly limited to iPad sales] has an initial market of over 3 million customers.

We all know how the eBooks have become a norm and that independent writers are actually able to spread their content to more eyeballs in a much shorter span of time. That is one why publishing books for Apple’s stores [the iBookstore in this case], is one thing that every author needs to leverage. Why? Well you have the developers publishing Apps and making fortunes, both to Apple and for themselves, likewise the book writers can do the same with this initiative. So what is or what might keep an aspiring author to stay away from this? The right content, the right tools and more importantly an effective guide that lets them:

Publish the right content
Ensure they have the right tool compile the content in best manner
Tips on distribution or in short; Marketing
Generating revenue

Now if I were an expert on all the above and had the sense of aesthetics, type and design, I would readily charge you anywhere between $500 to 3,000 [depending on the frequency of business I get]. Money comes hard and you aren’t sure how much money would your book make so it is better to make use of a free tool and perhaps a guide/tutorial on how to publish your book? Which brings me to FastPencil.com and the book by Michael Ashley: iPad Publishing Guide, The book has been published using FastPencil itself and I have been reading for the last couple of days.

The book provides what you would call a walkthrough on how to publish your book and actually sell it off professionally instead of sitting ducks with it. I mean I have one ebook online for almost a year and it hasn’t sold off at all [you can download A Cup Of Tea And Other Stories]. The guide provides you with tips and answers to any question that you might have when it comes to writing a book using FastPencil.

Am I sounding like a sold off? Honestly speaking I am not a good reader of books and reading this one has been easy to understand and more importantly appears more implementable. Not sure how many you would actually like it but if interested, you can purchase the book right here.

Zynga Growing Strong, Eyes To Become The Google OF Games

We will be Google or maybe “We are Google”, such statements coming Mark Pincus, the CEO of Zynga won’t surprise me now and they won’t surprise me in the future. The social game developer has been more than just successful in the past one year. If I am not wrong, it has grown as exponentially as the social network, Facebook bagging in funds in bulk and pocketing revenue from foreign investors, the major being DST from Russia.

Pincus’ plans to turn Zynga into a gaming juggernaut may not be unrealistic after all, the Zynga Game Network might actually become synonymous to what Google is to search. While it is definitely neck to neck with Twitter in popularity, Zynga is far more intelligent when it comes to generating revenue off its platform. Something which the micromessaging service has failed to do. $500 Million in the present year is no joke and over 100 million users in less than three years of its inception, Zynga to me spells success all over. Does that change my hate for Farmville into love? Definitely not but you need to give credit where its due and Zynga deserves it by all means.

All the gifts, virtual farms, animals, etc have had users sink deeper into its addiction and got them to buy anything on the virtual on the Farmlands, its a frenzy, which you might find ridiculing, but it has been successful with its what it is doing. The game developer is valued to be worth $4.5 Billion, but that isn’t enough for Pincus and his team who dream big. And I guess there is no harm if they do so.

I am a big fan of the Sony PlayStation which is why I find it absolutely essential to mention psx4droid, the PlayStation emulator for the Android based devices. Excited? I am to say the least.

The app is available for download here and it will cost you $5.99 and would run the games from PS1 and offers the following features:

Trackball to be used as the D-pad

The application is a new one and it is bound to have some bugs which will be improved with later releases. I bet folks who love the PS1 and the ancient classics on it wont mind the bugs for now and if you happened to own quite a lot of games on PS1 feel free to download those [i am saying this because downloading games you don’t own is illegal]. When you talk about being a part of the Web 2.0 or the mobile arena, speed and convenience is what should be readily available. Same should be applied to buying books, those academic or general books on any subject. Book.ly is another startup that ensures that a college student finds the books he is looking for at one place at the most convenient of rates.

Here’s the catch, Book.ly promises to assist students by finding their required books and save up to 40% in price. Now that is a huge sum you save given the fact an average college student would spend over $700 on books each year and that saves him $280, which is quite a big amount. Now, this isn’t some random cheap bookstore aggregator that gives you links to external stores where you can buy books, rather it partners with numerous clubs, campus organizations in a university. The partnership is based on profit sharing, where Book.ly shares up to 20% of profits with a charity or even the club itself.

On the home page itself, you can search books availability based on university search, by book name, author or the ISBN. The University search also has suggestions if the letters you type match of the universities in their database. You can also sell your old books on the site, those that you no more need and can be bought for cheap by a student looking for a cheap bargain. There are more than 500 universities that supported at Book.ly and given how useful it is, more universities will soon be added. Just incase your school isn’t added, you can request them to try and add your college or school by sending them an email [it is just for the US for now I suppose].

In my opinion, the startup is based on a clever idea, it addresses a much important problem and targets students who are always up for something that helps them with studies and saving a few bucks. Other than that, they can always earn back some cash byre-selling the books on the site as well.

Apple To Halt The iMacs; Should We Anticipate A New iMac Soon?

Apple lovers and especially those who heart the iMac should know that Apple is rumored to halt supplies of the all–in-one desktop computer. According to sources, Apple has told several distributors in the region to no expect new shipments/stocks of the 21.5 inch iMacs.

I am not sure why Apple has done so, one reason could be the continual fallout in sales of the desktop computers as well as the arrival of more powerful MacBook Air, MacBook Pro and even the Mac Minis. Interestingly enough, Apple announced the release of the new Mac Minis with HDMI support that will be sold for around $699 a piece. Other than that Apple might actually be looking forward to overhaul its line of the iMacs totally, this could include a more powerful device, perhaps with a touchscreen.

I might be speculating here, but that’s how it is with Apple all the way.

You need to make a comeback in a market which you have lost to competitors? Make yourself more local! That is what Motorola is doing in the Arab World. The Cell phone manufacturer, who recently sold its wireless network infrastructure to Nokia Siemens for a healthy $1.2 Billion has decided to launch its Droid in the Arab region by the name of MileStone that will cost buyers $700.

Motorola has been reforming itself lately, especially with the releases of the Droid and the Droid X, its popular Android based devices in the USA, which have redeemed the cell phone manufacturer’s credibility big time. Likewise, Motorola has taken extra care to launch the right product, in the right market with the right ingredients, the Android platform boasts coming in the Arabic Version. This, in my opinion is always a great move primarily for the fact that not many people are able to adjust to newer and more powerful smartphone and one thing that makes life easier is to have them available in a native language. That is one reason why Nokia has made it big in the region for its previous sets came supporting multiple languages.

Create A Hook For Anything Interesting On The Map With MapHook [Location Based App]

Location, location, that is what is everywhere on the Web, although nobody gets lost online. Ah, forget it, I think it’s not appropriate to share the story behind it here and come over to MapHook, the latest entry in the location based content sharing application.

The startup application for the much loved iPhone enables users to create location based entries based on numerous activities you do online. These include hooking your events, places and sharing the same with your friends and connections. The idea is to take social networking anywhere utilizing the amalgamation of social aspects with location based features. So how does it work?

Perhaps you have already come across services/apps like Yelp, Foursquare, etc and you have an idea what location based apps are all about. MapHooks lets you come across interesting places and hook them up to a map, which can be shared with your friends. It is not just about places, you can also share events that you plan out with friends or family. I am not sure if would be correct to call it a more convenient method of making you a citizen journalist, but that is how I perceive, maybe that’s because how I might use it.

For example you are walking on the road and come across an interesting place, MapHooks lets you take a snapshot with your iPhone, add a description or tags and then have the option to share it with selected friends or let everyone view the same. Once you are done with this selection, you can assign it a location on the app so anyone you share the picture with know where it was taken.

The Out OF Facebook Experience: Mark Zuckerberg To Appear On Simpsons

500 Million Users, a Hollywood movie on The Social Network minus all the controversies, Facebook and its CEO and Founder are having a ball. Mark Zuckerberg is set to leverage all sorts of media to have his presence felt. We will most definitely be seeing him in an episode of Season 22 of The Simpsons. What is it about?

Zuck is set to appear as a role model for Lisa Simpson an episode by the name of Loan-A Lisa. Of course that role model is all about the spirit of Entrepreneurship, wonder how Homer and Bart respond to this. There isn’t much we know other than what has been reported by the New York Magazine.

This star appearance isn’t new for Simpsons as they have had quite a many celebrities appear on their episodes as themselves. The season 22 will behaving quite a many stars / personalities other than Mark Zuckerberg, which include members of the Glee cast. I wonder how Mark looks all yellow, more importantly I will be interested to see the reactions of Bart and Homer, hopeful enough that they will have something absolutely stupid to throw at the ever controversial Mark Zuckerberg of our beloved social network: Facebook.

Is Facebook Down Or Something: Static Links On The Home Page

Celebrating the crossing of the 500 Million user mark, it appears that the social network is having some issues. Perhaps it is readying to introduce something new, I say so for I have been unable to access my Facebook profile for almost half an hour now. I have no idea why is this happening but its saddening.

As of now, even the login page freezes with a blank page and even it does lets me sign up to my profile, all the links are static. Anyone else facing similar issues?

Farmville Infests Markets Across The US With Farmville Cash! God Save Us!

Good God save us from the craziness of the virtual activity coming over into real lives. Who would have thought that our attempts to make the virtual world adopt things from real life would actually turn around and in fact influence reality? I am being skeptic? I don’t mind it, but Farmville is trying exactly that – teaming with Green Giant to bring Farmville Cash to around 4,000 stores across the US. Bah! Humbug!

I bet more folks have a reason to drool over Farmville and fight their bosses to enable access to Facebook so they waste time on the stupidest game ever to earn cash. This is being tested and users will be able to see 5 free farm cash sticker accompanied by a code, just like the the virtual currency on the game itself. If you are one of those hardcore Farmville-r, you can find out a store to cash out here.

I know I loathe the game like anything, but when it comes to numbers I must admit that the game has been prolific with close to 70 million user, a third of which are always busy farming. With its growing influence both on the Web, the social network and now the real world, I bet Farmville will soon become bigger.. err didn’t I just state the obvious?

Skype Embraces Multitasking On The iPhone, Won’t Charge You For Skype To Skype Calls Over 3G!

The multitasking capabilities coming with the iOS4 are doing good for the apps, Skype for one is taking advantage of this with updating its application for the iPhone. Users will now be able to make and receive calls, running their application in the background. However the multitasking feature is available for the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 3GS, sorry for those with the older iPhone 3G and the ancient iPhone 2G.

The multitasking has been a big relief to the users in general, think of it, you having to keep an application open in order to make use of its functions, sounds like a huge disgrace to the power the iPhone has. Thank Apple for giving this a serious thought and made it possible, you can now attend calls on Skype and there is more!

Do you recall Skype talking about charging for all calls on Skype? Even if they were within the Skype to Skype network, over 3G? Well they have given that up and users will only be charged for Skype to non-Skype calls. Another big relief and something that would see a large number of users flooding in to use Skype more on the iPhone. At least something good to hear and talk about after I called Apple the biggest whiner of 2010 over the iPhone 4 Antenna issues.

500 Million Users.. Burp! But Facebook Still Wants More….

Have you heard fairy tales from your grandparents about the gargantuan monsters in Greek Mythology or the ferocious genies from the Aesop Fables? How they were always hungry for more human flesh? How they allured them with fantasies? Well Facebook is the modern giant, drawing you deeper into the social networking frenzy, which you so hate but can’t help being a regular part of. I am not wrong, the numbers say it all, 500 Million users as of today and the social network is still hungry.

That’s half a billion people, almost a third of the entire Web population of 1.7 billion is hooked to it for one reason or the other. There are claims that if the social network were to become a country, it would be third only to China and India, each of which have over a billion people each. But I am glad it isn’t a country, especially given how monopolistic it is when it comes to governance. But putting the controversies aside, the last one year has been phenomenal for the Mark Zuckerberg and his Harvard project, if he dropped out then, it is all the more justified with Facebook’s success.

In celebration of reaching the milestone, Mark Zuckerberg thought it will be clever and important to praise the people who make up the social network by launching a new app by the name of Facebook Stories. Users will be able to share their own Facebook story here and read those from fellow Facebookers. Which is my opinion is quite an impressive move, I mean I am interested to learn why many of my friends joined the social network [of course many would say because someone else joined and they followed the bandwagon].

And The Biggest Whiner Is.. Apple For Its Continued Whining Over iPhone 4 Antenna / Death Grip

Alright, there is a new battle raging through the mobile world thanks Mr. Once Perfect; Steve Jobs, who took the stage to address with the iPhone 4’s antenna issue. The CEO, much to our surprise was open to allege the grip of death that causes all mobiles to lose signal strength. The death grip is nothing but how you hold your phone and the brave Steve Jobs highlighted similar problems with smartphones like: the BlackBerry, the HTC Droid and even Nokia.

Apple highlighted the E71 losing signal strength if gripped inappropriately while Nokia in reply stated there is no such issue reported. I agree with Nokia, have been using the device for almost a decade now and never experienced a drastic signal drop owing to handling of the device until today. I just thought that I must give it a try by holding the device in a manner Apple highlighted and yes, the signal strength did drop, abruptly from 7 bars to 1. This was tested with the Nokia E71, the E63 [took a lot of effort for one bar to drop] and another phone from China by the name of Q-Mobile, all three devices had a signal drop, but, I was holding the phones really tight from the bottom area, the way no mobile user would hold his or her phone. I tried doing the same with the iPhone 3G and it didn’t register a signal drop.

So why exactly is Apple playing a cry-baby’s role and blaming others instead of acknowledging the fact the iPhone 4 has some issues [irrespective if they are few] and do something about them. Of course they are providing covers to cover up the loss or something, but hey it isn’t really very clever of them to act immaturely. The engineers at Apple should have given it a thought when they were designing the architecture for the iPhone 4 and figured out an appropriate place for the antennas.

Whatever the case be, at least stop diverting attention by flinging mud at other phones, its unprofessional and plain stupid.

6 Stupid Things You Think Are Cool But Aren’t On Facebook!

The social network, Facebook is filled with all sorts of people; the highly intelligent, intelligent, average Joes and the those with a primate mentality. There is a drama every now and then and the social networking addicts are almost always having something to share as their status updates. All good, but there are certain things you do on Facebook which are absolutely unnecessary and downright absurd.

I have kept myself busy so as to not post something ridiculing on my profile and equally detest those who think they are being smart when all they ae doing is nothing short of insanity. Here is my list of 6 things that make you a jester, while you think you are being cool:

1. Stalking

You are one of those Romeo’s whose Juliet was never in love with. You were rejected, turned down requests for giving you her cell number, even changed her city to escape you and Facebook gave you a chance to add her, send her messages and what not. Have some honor mate! She seriously hates you and your acts are winning you no sympathy! [The same goes for females who are passionate at stalking their X-BFs!]

2. Ridiculing Status Updates

My undergarments stink! High time i changed these

Excuse me! We understand that your Facebook profile is your property and we shouldn’t be bothered if you were to pour mud all over it, but that status update is becoming a part of everyone’s feed you have added. The next time you are making a status update, ensure it is remotely sensible, at least it should be funny.

3. Sending IM To Every Friend Online On Facebook Chat

I hate to admit this, but it is seriously for this reason I have gone on a permanent offline mode on Facebook chat. Why would some people make it a point to say hello to everyone, every time and have nothing more than a hateful WHAZZZUP! Nothing is more loathsome than such act of absolute rashness. In my opinion a DM is a better option, it ensures you communicate properly with friends and that you are replied to. But again, please be kind to not spam the inboxes with messages that say:

“Hey Mark, Whazzup?”

4. Tagging Everyone You Can On Notes And Pictures You Share

This is absolute randomness, you upload a photo of a newspaper clipping that is in a language half your friends wont understand and yet tag them all, thinking that interest might ignite their intelligence and they will understand every word. Or more importantly a totally random and not so funny picture that more or less makes your friends think that you better be unfriended. Tag only those of whom you are dead sure will be keen to see what you have shared.

Of course not many of you do this, but I know some who are masters at this.

5. Oh I Have Loads Of Friends And I Am A Celebrity!

Take a hike! If you have 1,000 or so fans and you think it gives you a reason enough to act like an Oscar Winner and all wise, you better shrug that attitude off. Such folks ensure their friends put up with everything they do and yet have the least courtesy to reply to a decent message sent to them. I bet many of you have come across such folks and they wont budge from their attitude no matter how much they are disliked or even hated.

6. Washing Your Dirty Linen In Public

Your love of life said something you didn’t like, stop posting hateful comments on his/her wall and making the matters public. You have the cell phone to have a long conversation or text messages or even emails, why the hell make status updates that slur abuses, apologies, regrets, hate as statuses? Get a life!

While the world is worrying about the BP oil spill and the damage control to be undertaken, Greenopolis is bringing environment friendliness to the social media with Oceanopolis. The app / game is designed for Facebook and will be launched in beta before making a full release in the next month or so.

From the description, the game is simple enough as it gauges how environment friendly you are by giving you charge of an island, you are supposed to recycle waste on the island and create a community that doesn’t harm the environment. This can be made possible by interacting with your connections and earning virtual points, which can be printed to be used as tickets for movie theatres, stores, etc. Before I head further, isn’t printing on paper being environment unfriendly? Other than that, you can also earn the points by simply blogging at Greenopolis, a social network that initiated operations two years back, with its main objective of being a socializing site for the environment lovers. But I guess furthering the idea and bringing out a Facebook game is definitely a positive move, especially for the fact that they are rewarding their users.

“Bing, Can We Borrow Your UI?” Google Tweaks Its Image Search Interface

Looks as if there is a greater influence of Bing coming Google’s way as the search engine pushes its images.google.com to a more visual mode. The Image Search Engine has shed off quite some weight in this experimental redesign and from the looks of it, it appears pleasant. Does that mean I was being arrogant to appreciate Microsoft’s Bing? Not exactly, but Google was simply getting too untidy with image results.

The new design has more thumbnails, which are bigger, the simplistic text that cluttered every bit of white space beneath images has now been removed and you can also see the description when you mouse over the thumbnails. What this is similar to is how you view pictures or other elements on your Apple iPad, I have been impressed by that and this makeover is equally pleasant. Honestly Google has been very good with making its search interface more visual, something which hasn’t really proven wrong for the giant, but as people look forward to have a more interactive and eye catching interface, it was evident that someday Google would give this makeover a thought. If I recall correctly, it had tried the same out in 2006-2007 but the change wasn’t appreciated.

The current user interface will prove to be more easier to view image results, especially when you are using devices like the iPhone, Droids or the iPad, where you are more concerned about seeing neatly aligned images instead of accompanied texts. Does that mean Google would be making changes to its main search engine as well?

Tumblr Soaring High: Crosses 1.5 Billion Pageviews A Month

I wasn’t even interested to think of Tumblr worth mentioning for personal reasons but the growth of the service has been phenomenal. It’s monthly page views have soared to a staggering 1.5 Billion a month, putting it in the list of top 50 sites in the United States.

The user base itself is seeing a massive boost as it continues to have over 25,000 new registrations a day along with the addition of over 300 million pageviews. It is obvious that if it continues this rate of growth in coming months it will easily surpass the 2 billion pageviews mark in the next couple months.

While that is all to do with reporting on Tumblr’s growth, the service is also set to release its theme in 5 different languages. This would give users the choice to select any language from English, French, Italian, German and Japanese. This would definitely add more variety for the users and especially the ease for users to publish blog posts in the language they are more easy with. Lets see what news we get from Tumblr in the next couple of months.

Apple To Bring The iPad In Nine More Countries, Coming Friday

I have been reading about Apple ever since the famed controversy over the lost iPhone 4, the raids, etc and the release of the iPad which, not surprisingly has created ripples around the globe. The device has sold over 80 million devices in a little over 3 months since its release and there is no stopping it. Today Apple announced that it will be releasing the iPad in another nine countries coming Friday.

The iPad lovers in New Zealand, Singapore, Ireland, Austria, Hong Kong, Mexico, Netherlands, Luxembourg and Belgium will be able to purchase the device directly from Apple’s retail stores in their respective countries. Although Apple had been selling the devices to customers outside the United States since May, putting the devices directly at local stores would make life easier for the clients who have to either ask their friends, relatives to bring the device for them or pay extra price to get it delivered. The iPad has a lot to offer to customers with over 11,000 iPad Apps already swarming the App Store added to the many for the iPhone that can run on the device as well.

I am eager to learn the numbers when Apple releases its second quarter reports. If it is keeping up with its existing rate of sales I bet they must have crossed over 4 million sales. By the way, how many of you expect Apple to do a special giveaway of the iPads, at least in the nine countries?

The Missing Majority On The Web: Is Complex Technology Putting Barriers To Make People Look Beyond The Read Only Medium?

Something remarkable happened on the Web during the last few years. Initially the Web was like a spectator sport where millions of us sat around the stadium and watched the creation of a small number of people. That picture started changing a few years ago when a large number of us got off our seats and walked into the playing field. We were not passive spectators any more, and quickly realized while it is enjoyable to watch the game, it is lot more fun to play it too. Today many of us actively change the Web almost every day by writing blogs, commenting on them, exchanging notes through Facebook and Twitter, posting our photographs and videos, writing product reviews, or simply by voting on something. What was strictly a read-only medium became a read-write medium. What was a passive activity became an active one. The growth of Web 2.0 has been phenomenal and spectacular.

During all this time the number of people on the web has been growing steadily. According to internetworldstats.com, the number of web users across the world is 1.7 billion in 2010, and Facebook, by far the most popular social media site, have nearly 500 million users. Therefore, the percentage of web users who are on Facebook is about 29%. The web metrics company Alexa also estimates that 34% of all web users are on Facebook. This is a jaw-dropping number, and far exceeds any other social media site, including Twitter, which enjoys less than 7% of all Web users (see Alexa graph).

According to Technorati there are 133 million blogs out there, which also translates to 7% of Web users. However, in spite of the great success of Facebook, Twitter, blogs, and other social media sites, we cannot ignore the fact that most people are still sitting on the spectator stands. The exact percentage is hard to determine, but since there is a large overlap between the people who are involved in these various social media sites, the total number is not expected to be much larger than those who are on Facebook. Therefore somewhere between 60% and 70% of web users are still using the Web as a read-only media.

So what could be the factors that would stop some people, and by current indications a majority of the web population, from using the web as a two-way street?

Technology barrier: A large number of web users are still not totally comfortable with the technology. They have learned how to browse the web or send emails, but they don’t go any further. They don’t shop, they don’t join communities, they don’t play online games – in short they use it as a read-only device and never fill out a web form.

Security and Privacy concerns: A significant number of people believe putting any information on the web is inherently risky as it may compromise their personal data and their privacy.

Reluctance to share: Many of us do not like the idea of sharing their opinions and conversations in any public forum. This aversion to public discourse is sometimes a result of shyness, and sometimes it is simply a matter of personal taste. This is particularly prevalent among people who grew up in the pre-internet era.

Reluctance to commit: Many people do not feel the need to communicate with the world on a regular basis. However, it is hard to imagine, given the right platform, there is anyone out there who never feels the urge to say something. For these people, there is no strong urge to setup a blog and make the commitment for those few rare moments when they feel like posting something on the Web.

Whatever the factors may be, there is no denying that a majority of web users are still using the web as a read-only source (the unoccupied green area in the diagram to the left). To realize the full potential of the web, it is desirable that a larger fraction of the “rest” engages in the two-way discourse through some form of social media.

More and more people are joining Facebook, and this trend is likely to continue. However, there are many people who are not satisfied exchanging brief notes among personal friends, and would rather communicate to the larger world when they have something to say. Some of them may find formats like Twitter, with its 140 character limit, very restrictive. Therefore, the current set of tools may not accomplish this goal, and we need other platforms to emerge.

Due to the phenomenal success of services like Facebook and Twitter, we are seeing a deluge of other social media services. However, if you look at them carefully, almost all of them cater to narrow vertical groups, each trying to steal away users from other services, or offer the same set of people something additional. Most of these new services are targeting the same set of people who are already part of the read-write Web, and not offering much that would encourage the rest to join, which is why services like JotPress help remove the barrier for people to look at the Web as a medium to Communicate effectively instead of simply becoming a part of a global broadcast, of which they are just listeners.

The Redirecting Issue At Startup Meme Has Been Resolved – Apology To Our Readers For Inconvenience

The last couple of days have been pretty hectic, especially for the fact that Startup Meme had been under attack and almost the links redirected to a malicious site. We discovered that the issue wasn’t just affecting us and many sites, including GoDaddy had been affected by the same. It has affected us badly and more importantly has caused our valuable readers a lot of problems.

We have been working on the issue for the last two days and nights and have resolved it for now, waiting for feedback from our readers and subscribers to let us know if they encounter any bug or a broken link. Once again, we would like to apologize our loyal readers and hope no one comes across the issue in the future.

What Was The Problem?

The malware was affecting PHP pages on our site and the malware was redirecting the links back to “cechirecom.com/js.php” which took visitors to Security Threat Analysis, a fake online Antivirus / Security program. The users were shown numerous warnings in popup windows trying to fish the maximum number of people to install the software. Some screenshots will further explain what I mean:

We hope no one installed the malware.

The Solution:

The solution was found at Media Temple [the same service we use to host Startup Meme] and as stated previously it was an exploit present in WordPress that helped a script to generate a redirect link.You can follow the given procedures to troubleshoot:

Log into your AccountCenter
Click on the ‘Admin’ button located to the right of your primary domain
Click on the ‘Manage Databases’ tool
Click on the ‘Admin’ button to the right of any database to launch phpMyAdmin
Log into phpMyAdmin with your Admin database user (db######, without the underscores), as this user has read/write access to all databases
Select your WordPress database from the list on the left
You will be presented with a list of tables, however, at the top, you should see a tab labeled ‘SQL,’ click that tab
In the text box that appears, paste the following code:

UPDATE wp_posts SET post_content = replace( post_content, ‘<script src="http://ae.awaue.com/7"></script>’, ‘ ‘)

In case your database doesn’t use the standard wp_table prefix, you should the same with your prefix. For example, if your prefix is wp_smk, then the following would be the right:

UPDATE wp_smk_posts SET post_content = replace( post_content, '<script src="http://ae.awaue.com/7"></script>', ' ')

After entering in the query, press ‘Go’
If you are indeed affected by this exploit, you will see something that says "Affected rows: #". If you are not affected, you will see "Affected rows: 0".
Once completed, you can choose your next WordPress database from the drop down located at the top-left (underneath the row of icons: Home, Exit, etc.).

Yelp Makes Waves As The Android App Heads Closer To 1 Million Downloads

Remember we talked about Yelp upon its release of the Android App last year in December. The application is making headways as it is set to cross one million downloads as users leverage the update made recently.

The latest update lets users share their location on Yelp across other social sites like Twitter and Facebook. The growth has been phenomenal with almost a weekly growth of 50%. Yelp of course has over 2.5 million users actively using the application per month, of which a near half uses Android app. The growth for Yelp has been remarkable in the mobile section, growing faster than competitors like Foursquare. The team has taken up the challenge to make Yelp for feature and function rich and to better stand competing with Foursquare.

It will be interesting to see how Yelp performs and what other features it integrates to make user experience better. And while it is letting you share locations across Twitter and Facebook, it is definitely keeping checkins for Foursquare at bay, another method to cut down on competitors growth.

YouTube Accounts To Be Integrated With Google Accounts: For A More Unified Access

Google appears to be rooting out accounts for YouTube and integrating with Google accounts system. We are already aware that new accounts on YouTube are created by using the cross site access functionality to use the online video sharing service. Most of the YouTube users from the pre-Google purchase have YouTube accounts that are not connected to Google, the idea to have one access for everything is a clever idea for sure.

Many of you might be worried if their previous accounts will be canceled or they have to create a new Google account. Engineer Brett Hobbs clarified this stating that al existing users will retain their usernames and these would be tied with a Google Account. There is no need to panic that if the integration would create another Gmail account for you or have your YouTube activity being shared across Google Buzz, the account would simply act as a one username for all services just like you do with Facebook Connect, Twitter, etc. Plus it lessens the hassle to remember multiple user IDs.

Open Letter To Wateen: Your Service Sucks !!!!

I am patriot, there is no doubt about it at all but, this is one is a big but, butting in between my love for the country, the tech sphere and the state of services provided. Every now and then we get big names stepping in the Internet scene promising big, delivering, well a bread crumb to the say the most. I am preparing myself to flood accusations at my Internet Service provider, Wateen Telecom for providing a service that is nothing less than crap. Oh, and the customer support is equally pathetic, sending those SMS updates with excuses for the service breakdowns.

I have been tolerating this absolutely trash of a service to get up and running for almost a week now, before receiving an update that they are currently doing maintenance work due to which the service will remain suspended for a day or two. What’s surprising is the fact that they send that alert after two days of poor speed only to yell it will remain same for another day. I know I am blurting this out at Startup Meme even for the fact I don’t use it as a platform to voice my disgust over things/happenings, but this has seriously started to get on my nerves and actually affecting my blog addiction. The wretched fools have done a great bit of damage to their reputation already, especially for the fact that I had been one of their most loyal users, a big reason why I have kept silent for almost two of months absolute nonsense.

The problem started with my device not receiving signals at the ground floor, for which the technician suggested I move the device up one floor [leave it bare to the weather, birds, etc] or get an outdoor antenna for a replacement.I submitted the form, for which I should have swiftly received the replacement, but so poor is Wateen that they have run out of replacement devices. That is exactly what the customer support agent stated, though they had plenty to give away for a new connections. WTF? Your first priority should be an existing customer, the idiot rather suggested that I buy a new subscription, get the outdoor device. I thought Wateen would be respectful enough to let transfer my existing balance over to the new device, but no! My current balance would be wasted for that. Shame, that is what you call blunt and shameless fleecing!

I know I will be getting quite a lot of calls from other Internet Service Providers in Karachi, Pakistan. But I have had my bit of experience with everyone, they are excellent in the first few months and the moment they gain your loyalty, the service starts to show its true colors.

Face2Face: A Genius Idea Getting All The Positive Press It Deserves

Call it a repetition and giving too much attention to Face2Face, but it definitely deserves it. Proximate Global, the firm that rolled this out with the geniuses of Umair Aziz and Hameed Khan is definitely getting press, one it rightly deserves. Surprisingly people back home in Pakistan need to understand how essential it is and give due credit. Perhaps not many are aware of its existence, are these bloggers even reading other technology blogs out there mentioning it?

First and foremost we at Startup Meme ensured it was written about the day it released at the impressive press event organized in June, then came articles from VentureBeat and Mashable; which to no surprise called it a genius idea. I understand I am getting over the edge here and this is definitely not the last mobile app of its kind, but proximity based socializing has been put forth first by my own countrymen [correct me if I am wrong]. I am just waiting to read more opinions from the locals here and get their feedback, all so to mention it right here on our blog.

We are looking forward to have some sort of an event where the blogger community can interact with the brains behind Face2Face. This is would be far more exciting as more questions would be put forward, those that will be more to do with the technical complexities and how exactly is Face2Face ensuring absolute privacy. I have tried it out on my Nokia, was impressed, though I seriously detest using apps for social networking on my mobile devices, but this one is addictive, with all the options to connect via multiple social profiles you have. So if you are on Twitter, MySpace, LinkedIn or Facebook, make sure you are connected to friends, friends of friends and indirectly the entire social community via Face2Face, you might bump into someone special and important [if you are lucky enough].

Like It or Not: The Like Button From Facebook Might Likely Come To Email With MailChimp

It appears that we will be seeing a further expansion of the Facebook Like button with the coming of MailChimp version 5.2. The new version, which is supposed to be released in the next week will include support for the plugin to be integrated within email campaigns. So what is this going to do? What ever does online: share your subscription to your Facebook profile if you do like it.

That behavior would help MailChimp keep a better track on the campaign and at the same time become a part of the social media monitoring. I know it sounds super cool for the promoters and campaign managers as we have already seen so much benefits it has brought to everyone around. Firstly it’s easy to get along with, you like a page, just press the button and there it goes to your profile and appearing as an activity on your friends’ news feeds. That brings in loads of referrals to any site and shift that over to emails, you have a viral campaign catching fire on Facebook.

It’s not just making you hit the like button or accessing the link provided via email, in my opinion it’s more about getting readers involved in the campaign itself. Other than that, the promoters are well aware how many people actually felt that the email and the product or message was worthy enough. Lets see how this turns out and how people respond to it, it will definitely be used crazily by Spammers!

When I talk to people and explain to them the benefits of blogging, I usually end up getting a response that it’s too big of a deal. Maintaining a site, sharing something meaningful, for which most of them aren’t going to be consistent about. In short, it’s too demanding a task and status updates on Facebook or the 140 characters on Twitter do the trick and a few others know about Posterous.

But if you are one these users and need an easy way to share photos, short stories, news, etc then give JotPress a try. The startup ensures that you get the best of any blog or website added with the facility of minimum maintenance. Its free, secure, because it shares whatever content you wish to share on the Web. All this sharing is done by simply emailing the content to your JotPress and it is there on your profile for the people to see.

Though JotPress isn’t doing something unique by letting post content via email, it is definitely doing the right thing to leverage the massive Internet population. Given the fact that only half a people on the Internet are managing or writing content via blogs, websites or social networks almost everyone uses the Email, making the idea of Jot-Pressing really easy and more convenient to make use of.

The idea is interesting enough and if I am right it is competing with Posterous for the same. Of course Posterous has been an old player but people are always looking for alternatives. My comparison should by no means take the credit away from the team behind JotPress for putting up the effort and releasing this. For those of you, who thought publishing content on the Web was a nightmare, well with JotPress it is just an email away!

LG Set To Release Its Own Android Powered Tablet…. And There Begins a Race!

Looks like everyone is heading over to make tablets and compete with Apple’s iPad. Let’s not make this article too search engine friendly and come to the point as LG announced its plans to introduce Google’s Android based tablet computer. If that is true we might be testing the Android based LG Tablet by the end of this year, probably.

Before I go any further, this is a whole new rat race and everyone is trying its best to stay abreast of Apple, LG throwing the ball in the same direction doesn’t surprise me. This signals at the shift in the computer industry as we have seen quite a rapid evolution of the machines in the last decade, especially. Desktops computers becoming lesser in volume, with additional power, laptops shifting towards netbooks and now the tablets. The idea of portability is the key here and with the iPad, we have seen that these can be equally powerful. The manufacturers stepping in the field would encourage tougher competition and there will be a coming of more powerful devices.

Think for a moment if Apple would have been a lone player in the smartphone industry with its iPhone, trust me all the models would have been the same with a bit of tweaks. If tomorrow, Motorola, Microsoft, LG, Samsung, HP all release these tablets, each with features better than the other, I bet more people will have these or at least want those. Other than that, there is always the price factor, if you are getting an iPhone for $200, an Android based HTC for the same price, chances are another manufacturer might introduce something similar, yet cheaper.

Whatever is coming up, chances are quite high that there is going to be an influx of tablets in the next year or so. I just hope we get quality stuff and one that is readily affordable for the masses.

Isn’t the Internet really becoming a larger than life thing, especially when it comes to relations? No, I am not going to mention Facebook or other social networks resulting in ugly divorces but how relations can be built and people, err, singles can become couples. Doesn’t make sense does it? But Tastebuds is doing exactly that. Not necessarily helping singles get involved in a relationship but make acquaintances based on the likeliness of their taste for music.

Created by two musicians based in London: Julian Keenaghan and Alex Parish. The idea was brought forth seeing other dating websites failing to get things done. Tastebuds tries to remove the clichéd method of bringing people closer; that of telling each other about their interests, favorite colors and God knows what else. You love Rolling Stones or Sting and there is someone out there who has love for exactly the same, Tastebuds lets you know about people who share the same taste in music, believing that this might be a good criteria for you to date or at least make friends with.

Tastebuds integrates with your Last.fm account, which is where it gets to know what music you hear day to day and using the same data suggests similar music that you might enjoy and at the same time match you with other people with similar tastes. If you are worried that you don’t have a Last.fm account, simply mention a few of you favorite bands to get started.

I just wonder if it was about music why call not call it Earbuds? Err.. perhaps that would have sounded too medical or something.

China Hammers Another Ban: Google Suggest Feature Now Un-Suggested

Google is getting some kicking in China and Pakistan by the authorities. I had been experiencing a block on certain Google Search Suggestions on random sites by the PTA and I kept ignoring this until I came across news from Cnet. While it’ about China extending its impenetrable firewall further.

Apparently the suggestions feature has taken a hit in Mainland China . The links from the suggestions feature are all blocked while others that are done without utilizing the feature work fine. This isn’t the first ban nor it is the last, given that services like YouTube, Blogger have been doomed inaccessible in the region. Bad luck for the users in China, who might have been utilizing the feature for searches and quite positively.

I am honestly annoyed by such actions. Authorities taking such initiatives are actually stuffing their decisions and shaping how a consumer uses the Web. The same has been adopted in Pakistan lately beginning from the whole Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook Ban controversy. It wasn’t really helpful as it failed to achieve its purpose, more importantly people somehow managed to access the social network despite a ban on over 800 sites. China, might be more stricter, but hey, I guess Google complies strictly to the laws of the Chinese government, and blocking it is merely frustrating the Internet User back home.

Kindle Kindle Everywhere, Kindle Previewer For HTML: Why Just A Preview Amazon?

The Kindle e-reader might be feeling threatened by the iPad, but lets not take the credit away from Jeff Bezos from bringing forth these handy devices to read content. The concept of Buy Once and read everywhere has made life easy and it’s not just confined to one device alone. You have the Kindle app for the iPhone, the iPad itself, Android, BlackBerry, PCs and Macs. However there has been a vacuum when it came to the Web. That might just get resolved as Amazon is set to release the Kindle Previewer for HTML5.

This was announced today and would let users preview a section or a sample of any book that is available at the Kindle Store. In short, users will have the option to review the books right on the Website before they actually get a copy for their Kindle devices. Sounds good, but illogical!

Why would Amazon try and push out this feature to simply enable preview, especially given the fact that they already have apps that enable downloading entire books to your desktop machines and the laptops. That is my only concern with this update, perhaps not that important but still. Other than this, the preview will definitely help promote the Kindle library and if it really does enable full downloads of the books or reading within the browser, I think it will only remove the barrier to create individual apps for each operating system of the devices. You have a browser, you can go Kindling, hope Bezos grasps that.

Simplified Permissions For Apps – Making Life Easier For Facebook Users

Facebook continues to make usability of its platform a bit easier. Especially when it comes to user allowing apps across the platform. The social network today rolled out permissions model for third party applications, which would now make it necessary for these apps to specify what data they require the user to share. This isn’t something absolutely new, as it had been in tests since last year.

This is quite a needed move given that earlier these apps requested to share user data and never specified to what extent could this be used. All that users had to do was simply click through on Yes in order to make use of the application. With this current update, users will now be displayed a dialog box that specifies what private data of theirs will be shared or used by the application. This includes your photos, videos, etc. In my opinion it is a much needed improvement, since I hated using any application for they spammed the messages as well as sending rubbish promotions to friends. More importantly I don’t trust these apps.

Over all, the social network has been quite serious in responding to user worries associated to privacy and sharing of their data with third parties. Of course this isn’t yet enough to put a lock on anti-Facebook folks out there. We should be thankful that at least Mark Zuckerberg is taking those baby steps towards a better People’s network.

Face2Face: Worlds Should Meet, Not Collide – Welcome Proximity Based Social Networking

As promised, here is a bit more composed post on the launch of Face2Face. Pardon my excitement, many might not actually consider it an awesome, groundbreaking product but to me it means a lot. Especially coming from the region where doing something innovative is quite a daunting task. Lets put aside the negatives here and focus on the application alone for now. The app has been created by Proximate Global, headed by Hameed Khan from Pakistan and its Chief Technology Officer being Umair Aziz.

The main phrase in the launch was proximity based social networking. It had me scratching my head for a bit, I mean there are a lot of location based social networks in the likes of Gowalla, Foursquare, Loopt, to name a few what makes F2F swing away is it lets you consolidate your existing social networks. Those include the ever popular Facebook, MySpace and LinkedIn, again this is different from the perception I had earlier that it was solely a Facebook App.

So What Does It Do?

Ever felt like there was some way you could know about a friend in your vicinity without needing to call a friend or two? Face2Face lets you do that and this is what proximity means here. Users can learn about the presence of a friend nearby without compromising your location. While connected to your existing social networks you can send instant messages, call and keep control over your privacy. Just like you do in your real life.

I was a bit worried when they said friends and friends of friends could know about you being in proximity. But that’s not so as it lets you customize the settings and decide who should know about one being at a close range. Block people, allow certain to have the privilege to know where you are heading to and if you feel all alone and think connecting with friends of friends can help you get a bit more socially active with mere acquaintances than Face2Face does a lot to help you with its feature.

Runs on any device you call smart. Simply download the application here and get started. Whether you have an iPhone 2G, iPhone 3GS or the latest iPhone 4, a device running the Android or your loyal Nokia, it runs on almost every device out there.

The application has been launched officially and they will having a Press launch in the US on July 4. The event there has to be far more better and I bet it will get a lot more feedback from the blog community there. Best of luck to these guys for putting up a commendable effort and bringing us Face to Face, err I mean Face2Face.

Face2Face: Bringing Proximity Based Social Networking To The Web [From Pakistan]

Finally! something really worth mentioning in Pakistan for the Web 2.0. I have been complaining a lot about how the events need to be planned and what exactly they should be focused more on. Late, very late but a very important move to bring out a startup from Pakistan by our countrymen.

Welcome Face2Face, the application bringing proximity base social networking. I have had a conversation about this with Umer Umair Aziz late last year and I was impressed by the idea, today the global launch with an event worth mentioning. What’s best about it? It a cross platform social network, removing the need for you to register yourself on a new social site and runs on almost all existing smartphones. From the iPhone, Android to Nokia’s standard Symbian and the J2ME, which pretty much means all devices out there.

Then there is the product itself. What it does is simply base your connectivity with friends by letting you be aware of your friends’ location if they are anywhere close to the proximity [which is roughly around 50 to 100 meters]. I am still exploring the application further but take my word, the application is promising privacy as per your needs. You can customize the app to let you decide who can know about your availability in the proximity.

Facebook Movie: The Social Network Set To Release In October [yawn]

So now we will have Hollywood vomiting Facebook as well. Sony Pictures just released the trailer of the first ever movie on the social network, but the same name: The Social Network, aka the Facebook movie. The movie is set to be released in October this year. It’s one movie I am looking forward to …… not.

The movie is based on the book by Ben Mezrich titled The Accidental Billionaires: The Founding of Facebook and God knows what else. The book is based on the new centuries phenomenon, the story of Mark Zuckerberg, the founding of Facebook alongside its co-founder Eduardo Saverin and how it was money and not a woman that divided the two friends. It stars Jesse Eisenberg of the Zombieland and Adventureland portraying Mark Zuckerberg, Andrew Garfield as Saverin and Justin Timberlake as the founder of Napster. The movie has been written by Aaron Sorkin with the directional expertise of David Fincher.

It will be interesting to see if the movie sees anything close to the success that has come the way of Facebook in real.

Google Desperate To Rock The Social Networking Arena With A Facebook Competitor

Google made quite a buzz about Google Buzz in trying to compete the likes of Twitter, FriendFeed, etc. Honestly it isn’t that big of a success. And while all this was supposed to have down, Digg’s founder, Kevin Rose tweeted a rumor. Google might be in the process of releasing it’s very own Facebook Competitor called Google Me.

Sounds more like you are forcing folks to search you on Google. Why would Google want this? In my humble opinion, it might just be a move to amalgamate its branched services into one, just like I had been predicting for well over a year now. Facebook started off as a social network and then introduced services, features like groups, fan pages, personalized profiles and now location. Head over to Google, it has all those services in the form of Buzz, Latitude for location and who can forget Google Wave? What Google would do is try and integrate these in Google Me and might just make it big.

Whatever Google does or brings out, challenging Facebook [forget about toppling it] is quite impossible, given the fact that the social network is pretty close to passing the 500 million mark. Plus people have generally not accepted Google’s role beyond a search engine, an email service provider [Gmail]. It’s going to be a tough hill to climb the social networking arena, provided that people are already spending more time on social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter etc [around 15 percent of all Web traffic]. Whatever the case be, we can wish Google good luck.

Gmail Enables Viewing Microsoft Word Documents In Your Browser

There must be a lot of you out there who get Microsoft Word files or documents as attachments to your Gmail account. What’s the worst part about it? Opening it, or saving it to a destination and then reading it! Worry no more as Gmail now lets you view these attachments right in the browser.

This is an extension of the support you already had for the attached PDF or .ppt files and the same will now be available for the .doc and .docx files. If you do get a word file attached to the email and all you need to do is just view it, simply hit the View link at the bottom of the message. The rest is all easy and in case you need to edit the same just click on Edit Online and you will be able to edit the same with Google Docs. Oh if you aren’t pleased with editing with Docs, there is always the traditional and more tiring way to download the file and edit it on the desktop.

Facebook Credits A Step Further: Pay For Facebook Ads With PayPal – Advertisers Get More Localization

It appears that Facebook is strengthening its bond with PayPal as the two extended support for the Facebook Credits to include all advertisers on the social network. With this support available any advertiser can utilize PayPal to make payments for ads on the social network. This would help Facebook move a step ahead on its plans to monetize its platform, more effectively.

Oh, and there are more localization options available for advertisers. They will now be able to schedule their ads as per local times to target a more specific category instead of having them appear randomly.

I personally think that this move is far more secure compared to advertisers using their credit cards to buy ads on Facebook. It might have been easier at places but proved hectic, especially for those outside the US. I am always up for localization instead of centralization, primarily for the fact that it makes everything more accessible and more closely associated to the local market or demands. I as a consumer would love to see what I might be interested in buying or simply clicking on, similarly an advertiser would rather pay a better price if the ad he has can be customized in a manner to appear to the right audience at the right time and with convenience. The move is in the right direction for sure.
