The game is all about letting you make points while you go along performing snowboarding tricks. So what do you get spending time performing tricks? Lucky users who compete in the game get a chance to win weekly prizes. The game isn’t a mind boggling, nerve wrecking strategy game or something. All that you need to be doing with this is controlling a snowboarder who has to perform tricks at the mercy of the keys you press: A, S, D and the Arrow keys. You are rewarded for each trick you perform and the special bonuses you collect across the four venues you have to show your skills.

Gaming On Facebook Will Get Even Better As EA Plans To Bring Madden NFL To It

It was only last week when we reported that Sid Meier’s Civilization, the famed strategy game on PCs was set to step onto the Facebook platform in June. Today, Peter Moore announced the coming of Madden NFL to Facebook. The reason to do so? Well everyone is jumping on the Facebook wagon, why not EA with a few games in its armory?

Madden NFL has been big in the gaming market with over 60 million games sold globally. Now I am not sure as to what exactly did Peter mean when he stated that he wants to give gamers a simpler experience. I personally think by simpler experience he meant a much wider reach of the game utilizing the social network’s platform. Other than this, another question I have in mind is as to who will be doing the game’s development? I am not sure if EA is going to get its team head on with it, and most probably it will head over to some existing leader in game development on Facebook. Playfish is more likely to take the game away given that there were already talks of Playfish having something from EA.

If EA does pull this one off, it will definitely be a major boot to gaming on Facebook. I mean think of having a complete 3D experience compared to the sluggish games that exist already and are bound to make you dull. While the news is still new and we expect quite a lot, there isn’t much out there to talk about except that the game will soon be here.

While Microsoft has really brought the Facebook experience to the desktop in the most complete manner with its Silverlight Client for Facebook, it did miss out one important aspect: Facebook Chat. To be honest that is one of the most wanted yet an equally problematic feature that drastically reduces browsing speed. I was quite surprised as to why Microsoft left this feature out its client.

Enough bragging about features being missed or not, if you are really into having a Facebook chat client then try Chit Chat for Facebook. I will call it MSN messengers version of Facebook, though without any intentions of taking away the credit from the hard work the team has put. There isn’t much you need to do and the installation is breeze. Simply download the setup from here and go about installing it just like you would any other software. Once the installation is done you can log on using your Facebook credentials to chat away.

The interface to begin with is really simple and eases chatting on the social network. It displays the list of friends who are online and offline much like they are on your Windows Messenger. You can click on a friend’s name to begin a chat session in a new window and it has the needed emoticons and the basic text editors. I have been using it all this while and I find it quite useful to help me with the chatting issue.

God Save Us From Zynga! Farmville Spreads To MSN Games And The Messenger

There you go, I thought Facebook will be the only one being infected by Zynga. Sadly that is not happening as the lead developer of Facebook Apps, like Farmville and many other Ville has shook hands with MSN Games. The result? Well all those Farmville addicts will now be able to play the game via the Games on MSN. More importantly each of these users will be able to connect to the existing 75 million users with the help of Facebook Connect. Bizarre!

While I might be hating all this and to be honest I am maxed out on hate, what’s worth noting here is the fact that with this partnership, the apps destined for Facebook will now have a channel to spread outside the social network. And those will include almost every brand on the Web, including the likes of Yahoo and perhaps even Google. And that’s just Zynga making the jump and the rest are all eager to follow the bandwagon. All this might very well be the result of Microsoft’s ever increasing love for Facebook and plan to work with it in a much closely knit manner, perhaps that way it could monetize the gaming aspect to its own advantage without burdening Facebook with the worry of monetizing content.

So how exactly is it going to work? Perhaps users will be provided or needed to go on to a browser based platform to play it, which sounds quite lousy. Or to make it more efficient let them play it within their messenger. The other interesting aspect could be the workaround for Microsoft to get both Live IDs and those of Facebook identical, which will help it rise substantially in the battle against its arch rival Google. While all those are speculation, I will stick to my narrow mindedness and state that alI I will be seeing now is Farmville everywhere. If you don’t have Facebook access to satisfy this lust for the games, try using MSN Messenger, it might just work there soon.

Facebook Turns 6 And a Bright Future Awaits

Time goes by pretty quick, I still remember very clearly that I started my university around the same time when Facebook was launched and Orkut was reigning supreme and so was MySpace. To be honest I always thought that Facebook wouldn’t go ahead. I was so wrong, so very wrong and I regret why I wasn’t the early adopters of the social network.

From starting off as a connecting platform all the way to growing over 350 million users, the social network has been nothing short of sensation, evolving rapidly in the last one year primarily. Pick anything up associated to the network and all you read is a rapid rise in usage. Facebook Connect that connects over 60 million pages at present and over 1.9 billion pages that are currently indexed by Google. Those are jus a few of the major achievements and numbers, the platform on whole has expanded for the good of everyone around.

Where could developers have found a place to produce applications that keep the users engaged for hours? No matter how much I hate Zynga for giving the people Farmville to do absolutely but this game alone brought in more than $180 Million from DST that is definitely trying to be a major stake holder in Facebook after Microsoft. While the revenue model is definitely a big worry for all those involved with Facebook, the social network is predicted to raise more than $700 Million in the current year and that doesn’t mean it will be introducing any paid options for its users.

While we can all continue to talk about Facebook, I will just end this one right away and wish Facebook a very happy birthday!

Facebook: The Platform Of Platforms, RSS [Really Simply Stated]

Why doesn’t it surprise me, or does it even surprise anyone around when Hitwise reports of Facebook being the largest platform for reading news? Now it might be following the likes of Google, Yahoo and even MSN at number four, the point why I would consider it even more important is the fact the top three are search engines and they direct traffic back to the source sites. Watch Facebook and it is a bit different.

How?

The social network has been working around its feeds, providing users a chance to read all content right there. More importantly as Nick points out, the average Internet user [and that number is in bulk] would easily recognize Facebook when it comes to reading feeds. Who really can relate to knowing what exactly is RSS? I bet the word has been around ever since the New Web Order came into existence, but people only know it to an extent that it is what brings news to their inbox, the functioning of which is not known [ah yes, who really needs to know the technicalities?]. But come to Facebook, everyone knows how it works around and what exactly are feeds at on the home page. RSS might be really simple syndication, but that really simple isn’t all that simple for the vast majority.

So What Exactly Is Facebook?

I call it the simple man’s platform for almost anything. News is just one aspect, although I personally feel flooded by the countless requests and notifications that are sent but that platform is improving eventually. I guess as Facebook continues to introduce better tools to filter content, give users the power to keep their notifications clean, the power and purpose of the platform would substantially improve. The issue primarily aren’t the functions on the social network platform, it is the fact that many users have little or no idea how to use them. For example many still don’t know how Grouping friends might help them or how to utilize the feed filters? And I am not talking about the gurus of Facebook or tech savvy friends out there, I am talking about the very basic user, who is simply using it to connect, confused as to how he/she can reduce the clutter and have a much better time on the social network.

To me Facebook has taken the cake away when it comes to sharing, connecting and spreading the word around. It is already far ahead in numbers and in direct challenge with Google and when you say it competes the likes of Google and Microsoft, you know its potential. It has become a primary source for many to read news and share it. What remains to be seen is the fact how it plays against the aggregators that exist on the Web. That’s the only thing left, I mean the businesses are already using it, so are charities and developers, even YouTube isn’t that far ahead of it when it comes to videos being shared and put on the platform. What else is left? Not much and the only thing that remains to be seen is how it continues to expand further and take away the last few chunks. Its strategy to bag in features what it can’t buy continues to make it more efficient and productive for all the users out their. To me it is a Platform of platforms, RSS: Really Simply Stated.

I always find it interesting to browse through YouTube for funny videos on anything. Just thought about performing a similar search for Funny Facebook videos, though the results were filled with many useless videos I found the song worth sharing. It might not be very funny or meaningful, but it does gives visuals to the addiction that people have for the social network.

While the rap song had been put up back in 2008, it can still be applied to the present urge users have to keep spending time on the social network. I mean now it is even higher thanks to the countless reasons, from addictive games like Mafia Wars, Farmville to the numerous groups you can be a part of. The addiction is definitely more than what it was yesterday and less then what it will be tomorrow. Let me not stretch the word count here and leave our readers to enjoy the video:

Another Chain Reaction On Facebook: This Time It Claims That Automation Labs Has Access To Your Information

Success, the only thing that needs to be done to achieve it on Facebook is for anything to go viral. Forget about it being sensible or not, just a few clicks from users who fall prey to it. The most recent is the scam involving Automation Labs and it is fooling people into believe that their accounts are being watched by a few people and they need to be blocked.

There is no truth in this except that its like every other rumor send through a message that has gone viral. Seriously people continue to fall into this pothole despite being informed of such activities all across the social network. Just in case you are one of those who haven’t come across this, know that it will ask you to access your privacy settings and then the Block List and in the field for person simply Enter Automation Labs. Once you do enter this a new window pops up and displays you with a random list of 20 people who according to the message pose threat to your privacy and are spying on your activity. How bad can one get?

The worst part is tat you may not know anyone in the list. I am not sure if they are the people chosen randomly or were those who fell prey to the chain message.

This isn’t any different, I mean Facebook already displays you a list of people when you enter the surnames in the block list, Facebook simply displays a list of suggestions that you would like to block, if it’s just the surnames you have entered. What needs to be knows here is simply the fact that users need to be a bit more vigilant when such messages come across such notifications just try and verify it a bit and not fall prey to such scams. There is no such things that people associated to the Automation Labs have access to your information on Facebook.

HipHop For PHP Now Formally Out On Facebook

We talked quite in detail about the new PHP that Facebook was set to roll out for its developer’s community. While those were just rumors till yesterday, as today the social network confirmed the release of HipHop for PHP. This isn’t any compiler as I had thought of to be but a source code transformer, which turns your PHP into an optimized C++ and later compiles it in the g++ code.

HipHop for PHP isn’t technically a compiler itself. Rather it is a source code transformer. HipHop programmatically transforms your PHP source code into highly optimized C++ and then uses g++ to compile it. HipHop executes the source code in a semantically equivalent manner and sacrifices some rarely used features — such as eval() — in exchange for improved performance. HipHop includes a code transformer, a reimplementation of PHP’s runtime system, and a rewrite of many common PHP Extensions to take advantage of these performance optimizations.

The guy has been doing quite some work on the new transformation process and it eases the task of coding by eliminating the hard work of rewriting the entire code base for the platform. Sort of automates the coding process into the newer version. Plus it helps programmers direct both time and energy towards better productivity of any product or idea they need to implement without the need of manually modifying the entire architecture. Plus it adds scalability to Facebook, I mean think of scaling billions of pages each month for the platform, sounds ridiculously impossible.

The gist of the project has been to bring the ease of PHP closer to the complexity in C++. And with the Time Zhao has spent I bet the job has been done well. Facebook Games Will Get More Brain As Sid Meier’s Civilization Readies To Step In

For all those Fans of the famed Sid Meier’s Civilization and who are equally addicted to Facebook there is some news for you to look forward to. Take Two Interactive is planning to keep the Civilization mania off Facebook for a few more months and would be bringing it to the platform by June. I know many of you are a bit shattered, but hey patience always bears fruits worth it.

The game has been a huge hit in the strategy category, the development of which goes back almost two decades, in 1991. Much like the many games like Age of Empires, etc it enables users to battle and evolve technology to expand their empires. Stepping into the social network, the game will definitely make most of the network’s social aspects. I mean the whole excitement lies in multiplayer gaming and once it steps into Facebook, with no charges to play it, the game will definitely grow exponentially.

Just a tip, with the game on Facebook, users will be able to enjoy collaborative gaming and devising strategies to win over other competitors. The idea of social gaming would definitely be appropriately applied and taken advantage of with Civilizations and while there have been huge successes like Farmville, I personally think Civilization would add more brain to the brainless gaming that exists on Facebook.

How Safe Is Your Information On Facebook?

Earlier today Twitter asked its users to reset their passwords after a phishing scam set free earlier on the micromessaging service. Now haven’t there been many already on Facebook? While Twitter is definitely home to a lot of activity online, it can be less threatening given that you are primarily sharing links and very little information about yourself directly. So the most any one can do in a short time is learn about your pattern of activity across the platform, but have you thought about your Facebook profile?

To me its a haven for any hacker, the right place any hacker would love to toil to extract the best out of it. We have seen spammers making the most of it, so have the countless phishing scams. While all those have been about spreading a viral video or two every now and then, it just shows how vulnerable the whole population is.

Why Worry?

Well I won’t say the Facebook platform is insecure, the only issue is it has given the people involved too much to do with it. Primarily with the applications out there that have spamming the living wits out of every user on the social network. I know many of my friends who have very clicky fingers and are so polite that they would never turn down an app requesting access to their profiles and information. It has your name, location, pages you are a fan of and groups you have joined, all this is actively used to target content at you that you are bound to interact with and relate. The same information can equally be handled by hackers who can make use of this data in God knows how many ways.

Many of you might think that it’s foolish of me to say this. But if I only happen to know your name and the email address, I can post comments on any site or make a temporary registration to access a site or two. And trust me I have least idea about hacking or anything of the sort. The information on your facebook profile is way more and all it needs is a minor glitch, a fault anywhere and your entire data is in the hands of another person. Reminds me of the issue with AT&T where a problem with servers had people logging in to someone else’s profiles with their very own credentials. All that wasn’t Facebook’s fault, but it just shows that everything you have there is just an error away from being exploited, I mean if people can hack into Google via a flaw in the Internet Explorer, Facebook isn’t coded in ancient Mayan or something that it’s immune to hackers.

Will The Web Eventually Come Down To Facebook, Google Only?

I was skimming across the reports earlier today and figured out that Facebook has outgrown Yahoo on the Internet. Doesn’t surprise me least bit, not that I had predicted something of the sort, but it was pretty obvious how exponentially the social network has grown in the last five months, especially. And this is only beginning to balloon more.

While those numbers can be put aside, what is worth noting here is the fact that the groups on the social network have grown far more exponentially, starting from 52 million in October to over 620 million presently that are being indexed by Google. Those numbers are far more than what Google indexes from eBay and just a fraction short of the total videos at YouTube. And we are only talking about the groups here, seriously they have spread like wildfire, giving a rough estimate of each user having two groups to their name. And that number is 200 times more than those of pages [around 3 million].

Those numbers have surely grown substantially. Now many of those pages are pure spam tactics, but not all. There are many that are there for a major purpose which include those from brands that use them to engage their consumers with or sports groups giving their fans a place to discuss and gossip about their favorite teams. There some that might sound absolutely ridiculous like groups that exists for hate groups about text messages, etc. The obvious fact here is that there is no criteria or rules and policing to what page can be created and what should not be. Think of of, if you do happen to have groups in that number, each having bulk of information, key words that bait the search engine, you are bound to go up in the indexed pages on any search engine.

What becomes obvious is the fact that I have stated time and again; very soon the Web will be reigning supreme with two names, Google and Facebook. Of course Microsoft will stay there but I really wouldn’t count it in, because it is so different from the two. While all this sounds great, all the praise coming Facebook’s way, I seriously feel sorry for Yahoo that has lost its purple, just a figure of speech, I have no clue why I said said.

To end it, I might sound a bit too pessimistic about the Web scene here, but will the Web eventually come down to Facebook only?

Top 4 Facebook Pages That… Hate Something About Texts

I just thought of giving this one a try, searching for I Hate and then refining it to pages. I was pretty surprised seeing that a page on Hating Text Messages was at number four with over 2,500,000 fans. I thought of searching for similar pages that were Hate Havens and associated to text messages.

I Hate Getting Texts That Only Say "k"

The name says it all, it has more than 2,596,000 fans and the most active one in the pack. The page is highly engaging and to be honest I sort of feel like joining it, primarily because I dislike receiving the messages that just say K. While the interactive ratio is pretty less compared to the number of fans on it, but four out of the recent five posts there had over 500 comments and more than 3,000 likes. Showing that people do care voicing their hate for such annoying messages. Seriously it wastes a lot of energy to read a text and only see a K in reply.

I hate it when i get a text, but its not from the person i wanted.

I bet many would, how many times has it happened that you were anxiously waiting for your beloved’s message, you hear a message alert, pick to read it with absolute desire and anticipation only to read that it’s your boss asking you to get the task done by lunch. Deserves all the hate that the world combined could have, of course you can’t throw the boot back at your boss, but you can at least join this group and share your bit of experience. Oh just don’t forget that your boss might also be in the group and take it as a reason to fire you.

The page has over 2,596,000 fans, and there is quite some activity to make it an active page.

I HATE WHEN MY PARENTS ASK WHO IM TEXTING.

There are only two types of people or rather, kids who would hate this:

Whose parents are always spying on their kids
Kids who are really into something that they thing would invite parent’s suspicion

Whatever the case be, both reasons are valid enough for you to hate parents for this and join this group with the like minded. And with over 1,182,500 fans it has quite formidable following to make parents think that what they are really doing makes their kids hate them. I personally think if you are really angered to an extent that you really can’t take it anymore simply reply with this [Only if you are really a spoilt kid]

I Hate People That Don’t Text Back

While this page might sound fun to join, I think this one is for losers who seriously have no life rather than sitting, drooling over their mobiles in anticipation that they will get someone’s message. One bit of advice, if you do join this group, I bet you aren’t going to harm anyone but your reputation and people would readily avoid you given that you are so desperate to get some texts that you will flood one’s phone with yours to get that 160 characters of attention. On the other hand, I won’t mind it much if you do join this one, given you will have quite a brotherhood/sisterhood to cry and whine with.

When it comes to Facebook, it’s not more about connecting with friends and updating your statuses. You can do so much on the social network and with more features being added often the purpose of Facebook extends beyond a powerful connecting tool to a platform for sharing almost anything. And when I say anything, Photos and albums are what many would think of.

The very basic issue I have when it comes to photos on Facebook is that I find watching albums and pictures very slow and it more or less kills the fun it should be. The result, I always looking forward to easier tools to help me with watching those pictures and downloading them. And while there are a few tools that we have already discussed, another one is Fotobounce. The application rids you of the worries associated to downloading pictures from the social network. Firstly, lets get this straight it’s not a dedicated Facebook application rather a desktop client that helps you with Facial recognition and sharing photos right from your desktop and assisting with Photo sharing and viewing on Facebook is just one additional aspect that it has to be useful for all Facebook users.

The application can be downloaded here and the standard procedures followed for its installation. With that done you can register yourself with Fotobounce and specify the target directory where the photos you download can be saved. The home tab displays a list of icons that let you see how the collection you have is categorized, from there you can select Facebook and login with your credentials. Once logged in, you can grant permissions to the application to access/publish comments to your Facebook profile. Of course you have the luxury to deny the same as well and be prompted every time a comment is made.

After logging in, you can see your albums, or photos shared by your friends. Even those that you have been tagged in, which is pretty efficient and easy given what a huge pain browsing the Web to see your photos can be. And while viewing is definitely the fun part you can even download not just a photo at a time but entire albums, which is very smooth and all you have to do is click on the album cover and hit download, the rest is just a bit of patience depending on how fast your Internet connection is.

While the download feature is for sure worth all the praise, what I found a killer was the Slideshow, though it’s not anything out of the Heavens, but it truly impressed me, I mean why download the entire album for temporary or what if you don’t want to download the pictures and just have a look at them? The slide show is definitely the best feature in it to say the least.

New PHP To Go Open Source On Facebook, Soon

There is some rebuilding taking place within the Facebook platform amongst those developers as the word’s out on rebuilt PHP. That to completely. I am not sure how this turns up, but given that it is bound to be more efficient, developers out there will definitely adopt it as a their primary platform.

Now all this definitely sounds exciting and worth to talk about. I am primarily interested in how this platform actually helps with the development procedures and effectiveness. We all know that developers face some issues regarding notifications about their apps, etc, would this help them with their applications, like adding to them a threaded functionality. Further more it could be more like a development tool for beginners, for example a language tool that assists developers with writing codes easier and the running far more effective. Now if this is what it’s meant to be, I bet it will benefit amateurs like me the most.

This isn’t the first time that Facebook is actually heading out to do something for the developer community. The numerous Open Source projects it has, the developers have actually found for themselves not just a platform to get a wide following for their creativity, rather learn more from a developer’s perspective, benefiting from the resourceful site to create better applications on the largest social network.

Tips: Learn Your Applications Settings On Facebook And Avoid Excess Notifications

Has anyone noticed a sudden rise in more notifications from Zynga, Farmville, Mafia Wars and God knows clones of what else? The most recent one flooding my notifications is Astrology and I am so lost why almost everyone is rallying to use these? Don’t we already have horoscopes published in Daily papers, daily?

I have been trying to ignore this for quite some time and today just lost it. It’s annoying, friends you so love being connected to fall prey to these apps to kill time and in turn people like me bear the brunt. There is an update every second coming from these apps, games, etc. The app simply publishes your horoscope on your profile letting you learn what your star says about you and more importantly filling the news feeds of your friends who find it annoying. Well that’s just one app you have issues with sending notifications or the apps having access to your data. What if you need to stop all this from happening, I would like to share a few steps on how you can actually prevent all this and have more control over these apps.

Getting to know the settings

Click on Settings on the top right and from there select Applications Settings. Clicking on the selection will open a list of apps that you have recently used. You can also select categories from the menu on the right just above the list.

Exploring Settings

Next to each app you will see various options which include Edit Settings, Application Profile and a ‘X’ to remove the app from accessing your profile in any manner or making use of the data on the social network. The Application profile takes you to the page of the app on Facebook while you can use the Edit Settings to manage if your data is accessible for the app.

Playing With Settings

The Edit Settings have different options each. These let you define parameters or permission to be more precise for each app. It is here that you can define the privacy settings for apps, that is who can view updates to these. The Additional permissions help users further define or rather customize the accessibility for each of the apps and notifications you get.

Those are just very basic tips, but they can be really helpful for those who are grilled with access of notifications, crowded feeds with updates from apps, etc. While those might just be a bit elaborate tips, the best way still id to attend to your notifications and look out for the block application option. Especially if you really hate being a part of those. Developers Lose Big Chunk On Promotion As Facebook Murders Comment Reply Notifications

The status comments and comments in return of comments marching in numbers to my inbox bothered me big time. The idea to have it there was highly problematic to begin with as it kept bombarding you with notifications, however it is gone now. Thanks Facebook, as a user it has definitely removed the pain it caused me.

While I am here praising the move, the developer community is not happy. We all know why. I have no grudges against them or how their products benefitted from these notifications. This was already in the talks for the entire month as Facebook was always looking to put an end to notifications on user feeds, what might really be bothering them is the fact that hardly a few days back the social network had confirmed that they will not be making the move. So why exactly has been done and what was the issue?

I am not sure if you noticed it or not, but it had been happening that you would see notifications on comments been made in response to those who aren’t friends with you. Result? You would see how threads just kept growing even when you hadn’t participated in a thread or had replied already. Sounded very spammy to say the least.

So what is my take on this?

I personally like this move. A promotion is something that apps should have but taking undue advantage of the features and excessive push at content sounds like a terrible idea. What this has done is reduced one way of contagious promotion that bugs everyone around you. And while developers would love to have this available to force others into engaging, I would suggest that it remains so and the social network actually sticks to keeping the feeds, notifications and inboxes clean of all this.

Facebook Scam Alert! Don’t Be Enticed Into Knowing What This Guy’s Revenge Is [Or The Half Naked Woman]

Scam alert! There is a new Facebook virus on the lose and it apparently wants you know what the person will do about his girlfriend when she cheated him two years back. This is no app and it appears the virus feeds on clicks by users who are unaware of its purpose or more importantly who are consumed by the exotic girl in her bikini.

I just logged onto my Facebook account and found out that our dear friend has been infected by it. Seriously I was baffled when I saw this coming from him, as he isn’t into promoting sexist stuff, but he himself is unaware of how it got through and made it to all his friends. However the viral link is not there on his own profile. What could have triggered this? Also how many people have been infected so far by this? I haven’t clicked on the link to test what it exactly does and how it spreads further, though I will be interested in learning about it from its victims. Please feel free to share this so that we may use the same to create awareness about it and help others be saved from falling prey.

I am not sure if this is also spreading through emails from those who are currently infected or is it just a browser based worm that works only via clicking the link embedded in it.

Coca-Cola In Full Swing To Use Facebook For Philanthropy And Brand Promotion

If you are a brand trying to capture a good amount of air time to market your name, be philanthropic and utilize the power of social media, know that all this can be done. The example is Coca-Cola that has plans to to integrate ads, philanthropic work with Social media and the tool is Facebook for the socializing purpose. Both the beverage manufacturer and Facebook have shook hands to add more social aspect to the campaign as Coca-Cola will have two ads during the Super Bowl XLIV on CBS on February 7.

The Fan page is all about philanthropy and carries the slogan of Live Positively enabling fans to send virtual gifts to their friends and families. Each gift sent would provide $1 to the Boys and Girls Club of America through out the campaign. This campaign will be running alongside the commercials the traditional television commercials though out the period till the date. The whole thing is in connection with Coca-Cola’s motto of doing a little good while refreshing people.

The whole idea is impressive as always and I liked the name of the fan page: Live Positively that reflect the purpose behind the whole thing. It is of course more towards bringing corporate benefits to the brand but it is also inclined towards bringing major boost to more philanthropic work using the power of social networks. This initiative is just one example of how the brands are building a very powerful presence across social networking platforms and who ever creates a niche will reap huge benefits.

Must Have Tools To Update Facebook Status Outside Facebook

I find this pretty interesting, discovering tools and apps to help Facebook experience better. We have talked about numerous tools already, which include Firefox add-ons to make uploading/downloading photos and videos easy to Silverlight Desktop client to have the best Facebook experience outside the browser. Today I will be talking about useful tools to update statuses on Facebook. Hope you will find them useful and do give us your feedback about these.

Facebook for iGoogle

The tool is from Google and you can simply follow this link to add it to your iGoogle.The Firefox option is added to your iGoogle page and when selected you are asked to give access to the application to Facebook. Once done you can easily access Facebook from within iGoogle using the gadget and make use of the tool to update statuses on the social Network. There is however one issue with the tool that it doesn’t work in Chrome and has issues at times with Firefox, as in it doesn’t load too often and hangs. Perhaps it works fine for you.

FireStatus

This is another useful tool that enables users to update their statuses on numerous social networking sites at once. This Firefox add-on is placed at the bottom right corner of your browser. When you right click the button and select the post status update from the menu the status is sent to all social sites you have selected from the options in preferences. In the preferences you can specify what networks you want to send updates to and receive from as well as the duration from each social networking sites you have checked. Makes the whole interaction bit more prompt much like you get with the Digg add-on for Firefox.

Facebook Updates Via Twitter

The idea to have both Twitter and Facebook synced in a manner that when you update status on Twitter, the same is sent to your Facebook profile. However this isn’t for ever status update you send on Facebook and only those hash-tagged #fb are directed to your Facebook status and updated accordingly. The app is pretty easy and integrates quite simply linking the two platforms together via a simple Facebook App.

After a long day doing nothing other than watching a countless fellows waster an eternity on Facebook’s Farmville and Mafia Wars, there is nothing better than a video parody. We shared with our readers a Farmville parody earlier and here comes another one from Tobuscus. I really admire the hard work put to create these videos and really slashing out the addicts.

While the games have a zero appeal to me and I find them to be very irritating, people to love wasting time on these. Together Farmville and Mafia Wars share over a 100 Million monthly active users. Firefox Add-ons For A Better Facebook Experience: Photos And Videos

Another set of useful Firefox add-ons to help your Facebook Experience on within the browser. I will be discussing in the post 3 useful Firefox add-ons to upload files to the social network of your choice. The add-ons are pretty easy to use and equally effective:

Firefox Universal Uploader

The Add-on appears quite like your FTP-Client that all of us are so used to. The add-on once installed can be accessed via the tool options in the Menu of the browser and clicking it once, opens up a new tab that gives you the client. The client is primarily meant for uploading content to numerous sides, but lets stick to Facebook for now. From the client, select Facebook as shown below.

With Facebook selected, you can then click manage accounts and a window will open to let you enter your Facebook credentials. With the Permission granted you can than have the privilege to upload photos or an entire directory of images to your Facebook account. Sounds easy and cool for all those users who have loads of photos and are tired of the ancient Facebook photo upload option.

FacePad

Another useful add-on. However this one isn’t to help you upload images or videos to Facebook, rather assists you with downloading the photos you have uploaded to your account. The Tool lets you download entire albums to your desktop by simply right clicking on the album on your albums and selecting the option to download with FacePad to the location on your system.

Pretty helpful if you are planning to remove those photos from Facebook and look forward to having a quick backup of all the hard work. The add-on lives up to its purpose completely.

Facebook Video

The add-on lets users share the videos on their Facebook with those who aren’t yet in the bandwagon of using the social network. It’s a bit against the Facebook terms which state that you aren’t allowed to export of download videos on the social networking platform but who cares, given that you can already do so with many tools. The tool also provides you with the embed code for the video or download option in various formats. A pretty tool to grab a video or two on Facebook that you don’t want to have left out.

Joe Wilson Takes The State Of The Union To Facebook. Does This Mean More Jobs For Social Media Experts?

There goes another one all Live on Facebook. First it was Lily being shown giving live birth and a fanpage for her all the way and today Congressman Joe Wilson has decided that he will rather use the social network to deliver his live response to President Obama’s Address on the State of the Union.

The decision has put aside the otherwise powerful YouTube platform which has in the past being the preferred platform for anything that was about going live on the Web. The video platform from Google was always in the eyes of campaigners all around the globe and was the default choice, but those days are gone for now. Everyone sees the power of Facebook and the multiple purposes it fills for the users. In talks to CNN, Wilson’s spokesman stated:

Just like you and I would talk with our friends through the Internet [Wilson] is going to sit there with a Mac Book and camera on it and talk directly with people across the country.

Wilson is the same person who had stated ‘ You Lie!’ to President Obama during his speech to a session of Congress. This is the exact spirit he will be bringing to his Fanpage on Facebook, responding to his fans once the State of the Union ends. Talk about entertainment coming Facebook in a very political way. And isn’t he interested to get the words across to the entire population on Facebook. He sent a status update on the page asking his fans to invite their friends to join the page. Now is he actually asking people to join? Who cares? I mean the president used it to become the most powerful man in the world, what’s the harm if he is doing the same just to have a fan following on Facebook?

Whatever it turns out to be, the need to take advantage of social media is rampant all across the globe and amongst all types of people. Be they brands, blogs, celebrities, all the way to the politicians. Sounds very positive and a bright opportunity for the countless social media experts online to have a future in politics too. No IPO In 2010 Too Says Facebook

Despite all the revenue in pocket and the network ever expanding, Facebook still think its not the time to eye going public in the current year. The reason? Well it has all the money, a large capital and no fear or need to return back to investors, the idea of making an exit sounds pointless to say the least. That is quite a dent on hopes that many had.

Many interested folks were thinking that the social network would go public in 2010. However the people should have given up all hopes when DST made a massive $180 Million investment in Zynga, which by far is the largest developer on the Facebook Platform. That particular investment at large along with added stability to Facebook had done the trick and its investors have shut doors for the IPO in 2010. Plus the investors still think that the social network needs to mature more with time and added investments from other parties would solidify the social network’s position.

That is sad for the prospective investors sitting outside the company’s existing ones and hoping to have their bit of share in its stocks. But I guess that is still a whole year ahead and the only way they can be a part of some Facebook related investment, they will have to make way through the apps that continue to roll out in large numbers across the network. I just have a question, when exactly will Facebook go for an IPO? Can the social network rise enough to challenge Google in the long run?

Experience Facebook From Your Desktop With Microsoft’s Silverlight Client

I have enjoyed using Facebook over time and have always wished for a better and more interactive way, primarily outside the browser itself. To be honest using the social network within the browser killed the efficiency ad slowed the entire process of browsing down, especially if you have multiple tabs open and were using Facebook chat. And while TweetDeck did bring the status updates from your Facebook profile to its app, it wasn’t really worth it. In comes Microsoft with its Beta client of Silverlight for Facebook and my first impression is WOW.

The idea is simply superb and the need of the hour, I mean having a tool to use from your desktop to engage with content on Facebook using a very neat app just wins my votes for Microsoft. You simply need to download Silverlight 4 on your machine to begin with and once that is done the app is installed. From there on the process is like the countless we have gone through to install the countless software and apps we use on a regular basis. Which in short means I will not waste time explaining those.

The Features:

Almost everything that you have on Facebook within a browser. You have a neat and ad free left column for the links to News Feed, Pages, Links, Status Updates, etc and each opens up separately. This is perhaps the best feature for me as I find the design on Facebook to be very crowded and I just find it untidy. With this I have the entire content on my social network profile organized very tidily and I know what updates do I actually need to begin with and go to.

The feeds are also categorized differently. Like you can view photo feeds to see what photos have recently been put up, commented on and liked by your friends. You can also alphabetically browse friends, see their walls and the pictures they have shared.

Those are just a few of the features and I personally like the status update feature. You can place a status update right from the app, add a photo or multiple photos to create an album. Plus you can also take a photo with your webcam and upload it directly to Facebook. Overall it just appears nothing less than impressive and worth having for every Facebook user. of course users will have some time adjusting to its interface but soon enough it will be the most used application to access Facebook.

3 Useful Firefox Add-ons To Block Facebook Ads

Who doesn’t want to have hold of some useful tools or add-ons to make the most of their browser? Especially when it helps you with spending an eternity on Facebook. I will be talking about three useful add-ons for Firefox that will help you get rid of those irritating ads all over your Facebook Pages. Now each of these add-ons aren’t specifically designed for Facebook but can actually help you make your Facebook experience better.

AdBlock Plus

This add-on removes any ad on any page that you find bothersome. Simply add the plugin and you are good to go. The add-on is one of the most powerful tool as well as the most popular one on Firefox with over 69,034,077 downloads as of now. All you have to do is just point your mouse on an ad and right click and select the option on the menu. Once you do so, a popup window would open and there you can assign exceptions to the filter. With the exceptions added you can apply the filter and it removes that huge banner from the screen making sure you come across the neatest page.

AdBye for Facebook

Quite less popular than the AdBlock but it has over 21,000 downloads, primarily that is because it is only about Facebook. But it does a wonderful job with removing those troubling ads from the Facebook pages. Seriously I have always found them to be very distracting and barely ever clicked on any or even felt like doing so. But AdBye does a fine job at ridding you of the torturous ads that line the right side of the page. See for yourself the image below and if you feel like giving it a try, you can always use the link above.

Remove All Facebook Ads

Another one of those useful add-ons with just a fraction less than 20,000 downloads. The add-on works in a similar manner as AdBye but this one is just a tip ahead. The plugin is just different by name however I did notice one glitch that at times it removes content on both the left and right of a page on Facebook, yes that includes your fans on a fanpage and description, etc. Otherwise it is no different in any manner.

Of all the best I primarily liked AdBye the most, while AdBlock Plus is definitely more powerful it blocks images to reduce the weight on the page not the text part of the ads. You of course have the option to modify it, but if its just plain old simplicity you ask for, go for AdBye, it definitely much easier. By the way if you do have a suggestion on another Ad blocker that works perfectly to kill ads on Facebook, do let us know about it in the comments.

Why Facebook ‘Hate Facebook For Charging’ Pages Nothing But Scam

This shouldn’t be worth a read for many out there who have a Fan count of over a few million already or have friends that follow you blindly anywhere. However Facebook is a place where you will find a countless really innocent people who will believe you readily even if you came up with the most insane idea. I have been overwhelmed by fan pages that started barely a month back and have outgrown the subscribers of many major blogs combined. Surprising isn’t it, to me it is.

I have gulped down a large number of such groups on Facebook for they did really have some plan and purpose, but there have been some that just appear so insane that their creators need to be put in some Facebook Asylum. Now I am not being anti-people or anti-freedom of speech, but seriously it gets annoying when you get notified of joining a fan page that is being made with a purpose to amass 1,00,000 users to stop Facebook from going over to a paid model or something of the sort. More importantly there is so much duplication all across the platform and the numbers keep growing, are people really thinking that the team running Facebook actually plans to go over to a paid format or something of the sort? I don’t think so it will.

Let me just clear this out for all those people who are exploited and made to join groups and spread the spamming hysteria all across the social network. The paid model isn’t coming along for many reasons, some of the major reasons why this wont happen are:

The social network is bound to generate almost a billion dollars this year. It has not yet charged a single penny for any one to signup.
If money is an issue for Facebook, it can place all those countless ads from ad platforms, including Google AdSense to crunch in some cash to at least its team to sustain itself.
It can sell ads on its sites for giants like Cisco, Apple, Samsung, Google, Microsoft and God knows how many brands more to make what users can generate by paying for it.

Those are just three major ways it can generate the money which is something it doesn’t want at the moment and for times to come. So if you still think that Facebook is definitely going to charge for using the platform, it’s only happening if Mark Zuckerberg is on the roadside with the rest of the staff singing songs on Facebook and its days of glory, which might only happen if the Mayan prediction comes true.

And Now A FanPage For Lily .. The Black Bear

This is insane, seriously, the latest buzz on Facebook is Lily, the Black Bear giving birth live to the audience on Facebook. This wasn’t something accidental, rather a group of researchers had installed a camera in her den to study the bear’s hibernation. The page as of now has close to 65,000 fans in under a fortnight.

The birth was given on Friday and the reason why it is creating such a stir is because this is the first time a bear giving birth in the wild has been recorded. So what exactly can this be put to use with? Researchers alone of course while Facebook users have a reason to talk about or should I say another reason to create a brouhaha about. While I was writing this post I just clicked over to the page and there is every sort of talk about the topic there. I mean there is even a talk about raising donations for the cause for www.bear.org and they have already raised a healthy $35,823. Surprising.

While I do appreciate the research bit here and the need to learn about the animals in the wild the facebook fanpage for this is quite astonishing. Not that I envy this or hate the idea, but it just shows how the platform is being utilized by everyone around for the countless purposes. Just a bit worried because this has set up a new category how the social network can be used and I am more than ready to see a plethora of such pages springing up in the weeks to follow.

Experiment To Lock Journalists In A House: Access Facebook And Twitter For News

There is a new experiment underway that involves journalists from Canada, Belgium, Switzerland and France. No it doesn’t want to test out a new experiment involving telepathy, rather it is about Behind Closed Doors on the Net. The experiment begins on February 1 and will end on February 5.

So what’s the Experiment About?

The experiment is about having five journalists locked inside a house and they will be monitoring the news they receive via social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter. The purpose is to bring to light how these sites play a role in breaking a news and how authentic can these be called, given the fact that these social networks have been in the limelight on many occasions in the last one year, from presidential campaigns, Iranian elections to the most recent reporting on the Earthquake in Haiti. Not just that, Facebook for instance has been actively used to raise donations and aid for the victims in the country.

The participants will have no access to communication and reading material like mobile phones, printed magazines or papers of any sort. In short the only form of communication tool they will have is an access to the Web and can only access to the links they get in their Twitter stream of Facebook profiles. They will also have the permission to access streams of their fellow journalists and links they have posted on their profiles. Just wonder if they are allowed to expand and add more friends to their profiles to have access to more sources. Not sure about that and stating my opinion this shouldn’t be allowed and they must remain with their existing group when the experiment begins, I mean if they have the liberty to follow more people or links, they simply don’t need to have access to other forms of communication tools. They must stick to their Facebook and Twitter only, which would actually help figure out how beneficial these social networks actually are.

What will it result in?

Well to me both Twitter and Facebook are plain platforms to have a wider access to the links. More like a directory of links if I put it more appropriately. While these journalists can also access news through the links, I look forward to a similar experiment that lets the volunteers remain updated via the social network and see ho updated they are with the happenings during the experiment.

To me this experiment would really stretch out the ongoing debate that how useful these networks are for the news to expand and words to get across and more importantly how reliable these are. Lets see how it turns out, we will keep you updated as the news happens and once the experiment begins. It will be interesting to see the outcome of this one.

Dave Morin Takes A Bow From Facebook To Begin A Startup

Being one of Facebook’s key player since launch of the Facebook Platform, Dave Morin on Friday announced his departure from the social network. Dave plans to team up with Napster founder, Shawn Fanning tot begin a new startup. A big hit for Facebook given that the man has been the key man to create the developer community for the platform.

While the loss is big for sure but that is exactly what Mark Zuckerberg had been talking about; inculcating the spirit of entrepreneurship from those holding key positions in the social network. I personally think this is a good move as many a firms upon reaching the point like Facebook has, get less innovative, there is excessive development for sure, but the thrill of growing from zero to a solid position is not there. Also these people can add more value to the Web by teaming up with the like minded and bringing up a winning band on the scene creating more opportunities for everyone. The move, as said previously must have sent a jolt in the ranks of Facebook, since Dave was also the one who made more public appearances for the social network. However it will prove good for the industry overall and we might just have another brilliant idea soon. We wish you best of luck for your new venture Dave.

Facebook Users Continue to Contribute For Haiti’s Earthquake Victims. Reach 39% In Australia, UK And US

The Global Disaster Relief page on Facebook is definitely keeping us updated on what is happening at present about assisting the victims of the Earthquake in Haiti. The present reports on the help state that the close to 40% of the social network users have donated for the victims of the tragedy. The numbers speak of users based in the UK, Australia and the US.

The breakdown puts the aid at 32% in cash while the remaining is in form of goods. What’s interesting to see is that more users intend to put their bit of share for the cause. The details on the donations provide quite an insight and its interesting to see that more contributions have been made by females users and more than 60% of users aged over 50 were more likely to make contributions. Not that males and youngsters haven’t made any contributions, but the larger chunk has been from the two mentioned.

The Global Disaster Relief has also initiated the Hope live streaming at LiveStream and you can actively watch it and participate in the causes to help the people in the country. The attempt is to raise funds to help the aid work that is currently taking place.

Marketing on Facebook has really caught fire in the last year. We have seen many brands jumping the bandwagon and maximizing on the social network’s growing popularity. The latest to step in is Procter and Gamble, which has proudly stated that Facebook is the future of the of all marketing. Isn’t it stating the obvious?

While the energy is obviously positive, I just think they are being more than being positive as they say that the company can very well reach 5 billion people. What are they marketing Facebook and working on marketing the social network to indirectly market their brand too? The leading brand in the market sees it as a very essential tool when it comes to a marketing platform and managing the brand online and P&G is willing to spend any amount of revenue to maximize profits. The most important reason is perhaps the platform is very engaging and with more development within Facebook’s more social ads, the need of Facebook as an essential advertising tool becomes the need of the day.

While P&G is definitely the highest spender in marketing and ad spending with a 2009 expense of more than $9.7 Billion and with Facebook gaining more traction amongst brands, I bet the earlier adopter will reap maximum benefits in the long run. A Happy Pets Notification Free Day As The App Goes Down

Boy it must have been a relief for the countless Facebook users in the last 24 hours as Happy Pets suffered an outage. The app has been growing exponentially crossing more than 11 million monthly users and giving ever more credibility to Crowd Star that also owns Happy Aquarium which is one of the ten most popular apps on Facebook. What exactly is so engaging about these games anyway?

Coming back to the app being down. It appears the burst in traffic itself has choked the application and rendered it inaccessible for users. This primarily comes after the app added more than 2 Million users in just a month but honestly speaking I would disagree on this reason. I mean the developers must have taken into consideration the fact that such apps would see a major rise in traffic month over month so I guess they did have some preparation for such a happening. I will keep my thoughts on the side and state that the primary reason was apparently due to some bug which ended up violating a privacy violation within the app leading to the ban.

I guess this ban is temporarily imposed on Happy Pets by Facebook, given that the bug might compromise user privacy for those active on the application. Call me a social game hater, I at least got a day free of Happy Pets notifications!

Facebook Makes It Easier To Swallow The Apps with Games And Apps Dashboard

Facebook is all set to release the Dashboards for its games and apps. The new dashboard would ease the task of users for interacting with their applications right from their homepage and benefit the developers to ensure that any updates you sent are relevant and interesting ensuring maximum engagement. I personally think this is an intermediate step before notifications for all apps make way to users via their emails given that present the dashboard will only show a maximum of two apps as plain text fields. Those might sound like a subtle changes but a few major alterations will be discussed briefly here.

Recommended Apps

Facebook will suggest users the most liked applications so that users don’t end up using useless apps and more importantly that aren’t much trusted. I was however a bit surprised as to why it showed sponsored apps? Perhaps that is just been put their to test its new Ads system across the platform. Other than that it also features the recent apps ensuring that it is easier for users to engage and re-engage with apps.

Developers can also communicate with app users utilizing the news items. This would help developers communicate via the new dashboard. These won’t be like the page long notifications but simple text next to the concerned app.

Recently Used Apps And Directory:

The idea is to make app discovery easy. The dashboard would show what app their friends have recently engaged with as well as how many friends have used a certain app. The API also features a directory of applications that you might like, plus a link to Facebook’s Application Directory.

Some Tweaks After Homepage Redesign

Facebook would be introducing a few changes once the homepage has been redesigned for users. This would include placement for apps on the homepage and make them more prominent. The interesting feature is perhaps the Counters; which would enable the developers to inform those using the application about the actions or updates that are been made to the within the app. More like much cleaner form of notifications.

My Take

The application directory overall gives a much neater look and I personally liked talking about apps on Facebook for the first time. With the directory its easy to know what friends of yours use apps on the social network as well as the apps each one of them is using. Gladly enough Facebook has taken care of letting users know what the trusted circle of their friends engage with and keep the bulk directory towards the end of the page dividing them in neat categories.

Facebook’s Desperate Attempt To Win Over Orkut In India, Goes For Sponsored Ads On Google In India

There is seriously no limit to the extent one can go to grab market share, even if it involves spending cash. Facebook is doing the same to challenge Orkut in India as the Google owned social network reigns supreme there. There is a surprisingly high number of Facebook references or should I say promotions of Facebook on Google ads as reported.

The social network is actually buying ads on the Search Engine. The users in India have been experiencing this for quite some time now and as I said earlier, it is a desperate measure that makes me believe me that if you can’t win it, buy it, which is exactly what Facebook is doing. The social network despite making huge leaps in amassing users Globally, has failed terribly to make a mark in India where Orkut is the ultimate leader in the social networking scene. I guess the Facebook is feeling the brunt of it as it can’t maximize on the massive Indian Market and make huge profits there.

On the other hand, what’s even worse is the fact that when you perform a search on Google and are displayed a sponsored ad on a person, you are linked in no way to the searched person’s profile or friend request page but to Facebook’s homepage. I can’t personally test this out since the Facebook is clocked here, but I will definitely update the post as I get a chance to experience it myself. Facebook To Shrink Profile Photos [Doesn’t Like Your Pictorial Presence?]

I am wondering what will those creative Facebook users go through when they learn that the social network is about to slice and dice your profile pictures. I know its nerve wrecking. Not for people like me who just add their own photo taken randomly, but the artistic people whose photos won them a lot of praise would be cursing this.

The social network plans to reduce the size of the profile pictures in the coming week and at the same time enable you to upload larger file sizes. While this does sound bad, I personally think there are some useful updates planned to be made in its photo application. To me it isn’t anything surprising, given that the social network is doing some redesign of the entire site, we have seen some changes in the homepage, well that’s not the only place on Facebook where it’s happening. The redesign would most definitely include profile and fan pages as well as those for groups. The idea is to make the platform appear cleaner and more effective. The tabs themselves have been reduced from 720 to 520 pixels, meaning that the developers out there want the content more condensed.

When I mentions redesign, I usually include the policies and how the things work around on the social network. We have reported already how Facebook is going more independent, from Removing Microsoft banner ads on the site to having its very own data centers. Which I personally find quite positive. As for the shrinking of images, well it might not create problems for any. I mean someone who can have a custom photo for the current size can also alter it to fit the current size.

Pull Those Microsoft Banners Down!!! Facebook Opts For More Social Ads

I just spoke of it earlier today, Facebook is being more independent as time goes by or should I say as it continues to grow exponentially. The biggest brunt appears to be falling on Microsoft as the social network adopts for more social ads. Its surprising given that Microsoft invested $240 Million for a very small stake in the social network at a rather high evaluation of $15 Billion last year. Sadly enough all Microsoft will eventually get out of it are the shares it has.

Facebook had already stripped off banner ads from Microsoft outside the US. It appears that the same will be implemented within the US market too and though Microsoft does help it generate quite some revenue, the social network just doesn’t find them engaging enough. The idea is to introduce more engaging advertisements on the social network, primarily the brands who can leverage the banner placement to promote themselves and have more people join the groups. The whole concept speaks one thing on the whole that Facebook is confident that these ads are bound to be very profitable for Facebook, which is why it is pulling the food out of the giants mouth.

While many might think that I am being negative at representing my point of view on this development, let me correct it that there is no crack between the two at present. Why would there be? Microsoft is a share holder and its interest lies in Facebook munching success which would directly affect its evaluation and bring in more revenue from others. It also reminds me of Facebook Search results were to be powered by Bing, I sense that the social network would go independent with the search as well, perhaps not right away, but sometime in the near future. What do you think about this? Would this really help Facebook achieve what it intends to with the more social ads?

Here is another Facebook Connect enabled website on the Web and its another biggy: Microsoft. The software giant is easing connectivity for users for Ribbon Hero, its add on for Windows Vista and Windows 7. The add on is for Office 2010 and 2007 with an idea to make learning the Office tools like Word, PowerPoint and Excel fun and more interactive.

I am myself a bit shaky when it comes to using Office 2007 to even half its potential like many others out there and with all those tool bars at the top, I get intimidated. Seriously it has taken me years to improve on that and memorize functions with the hit and try method. But Ribbon Hero has been designed for the purpose to give you more confidence when it comes to using the tools. The result? Well you might very well end up learning many of the tools that an awful lot of Office users are unaware of, eventually you will be able to call yourself a pro at the Office Suite.

The app works much like the countless that already exist on Facebook. The moment you are connected via Facebook Connect, you are asked invite your friends, why? Well the bait here is you competing with them and seeing who is better? If you do manage to do better than others you can also boast it by sharing the achievement with fans of the app on Facebook. The only major requirement is that users who plan to challenge others must have at least Windows Vista running Office 2007 or 2010.

It interests me a lot to see how almost every name on the Web is utilizing Facebook for publicity of their products and applications. Microsoft has however been the forerunner at integrating with Facebook more than usual. I mean its quite unlike Microsoft to actually use a service without actually creating a brouhaha about acquiring it.

Post Insights Go Live For Some Page Administrators On Facebook

Status updates and sharing news on Facebook lacked a lot initially. Firstly you barely ever got to know the source of a news or link that was shared, which Facebook improved with the via feature. Today it made another useful change or should I say introduced a more useful feature: Post Insights. And as simple the name is, its functioning isn’t difficult either.

Post Insights will enable page administrators to learn which one of their stories has been viewed the most, as well as how engaging it has been overall. The engagement factor is shown as percentage of feedback against the total impressions. The sad part as of now is that it isn’t available for all administrators at present. The feature is definitely very useful, primarily for the fact that you never know how many of your fans actually visited the link or viewed updates on the page and another winning feature that makes Facebook stand out from all competitors, primarily Twitter that still has no such feature available. Other than that I am just a bit skeptic about the authenticity of these insights given that they are controlled by the social network itself.

Other than that I also fail to understand what exactly is Facebook calling impressions? I mean a page might have tens of stories and we all know that many users wouldn’t really scroll down all the way, even if the page is fully loaded. So what does impression define or include? What about the overall accuracy of these? While the feature might make many ask questions about its functioning, I personally think its a much needed step taken by Facebook to help page administrators determine what is it that engages users more on the pages.

I am unable to view insights at present hence I can’t really have a true picture of it, but what about you all? Are you seeing those on your pages?

Enough Of Wholesale Data Centers! Facebook Will Its Own Data Centers

There is nothing better than having your own storage facility for the bulk of data you have. Facebook for one has that and not to forget a very valuable bulk of it. The company is making the right move as it plans to have their very own data centers instead of leasing them from third parties. Talk about growing independent, rapidly, isn’t Facebook pushing past firms that helped it get to this other than the users?

While that might sound very true and worrying at the same time for some [Microsoft ads booted from Facebook outside US]. But the news in my opinion is all good given all that storage will now be the headache of Facebook solely and we will know exactly who to look at if something leaks out. The social network continues to get closer to the 400 million user mark and with cash flowing in from the investors globally, a company owned data center sounds pretty reasonable. We aren’t sure about the identity of this new company that will boast of being the first Facebook owned Data Center, the servers there are bound to have a newer and possibly a better method of distributing and consuming power.

I am quite intrigued by the idea of a better power distribution system for the servers, they will definitely be more efficient that the ones that have been used previously. This is another advantage as it would help Facebook save a lot more on spending large sums on electricity bills and maintenance. I personally think the data center is going to break away from the traditional modes, primarily adopting the energy model of Google that relies on on board batteries on servers which ensure uninterrupted power supply to servers and has a far superior efficiency compared to power and even UPS. To make it sound more statistical, the losses during power distribution from 35% to 15%.

At the Data center Rich Miller has confirmed that the new tenant for the servers is in no way associated to Google or Yahoo. Talk about a disclaimer to make it sound all so exclusive. Lets see how things work out with Facebook and how much it is actually able to save with its very own data centers.

Free UGG Giveaway On Facebook: Sorry Scammers Not Interested!

Everything evolves with time and everyone gets cleverer, scammers are no exception. Facebook has perhaps become the best place for them to learn all the tricks to phish users. The latest occupation of these is across the groups,inviting users to rush in for a offer they find hard to overlook. The most recent development is with the fake UGGs group which allures users into joining the group, complete a few offers before they can actually get a free pair of UGG footwear. You wish you did!

The offers are the plain, old, loathsome IQ quizzes that I bet many of us are already tired of and know that they are nothing more than just links to phish you out. The group in discussion has amassed 140,000 users as of now and as I can predict it will grow to double that amount within a couple of days despite reports of it being a false group and that there is no giveaway of any kind whatsoever. So why so many people are flooding in? Don’t these users have the least bit of sense to ask when exactly will those offers end? Of course there can be an actual giveaway by UGG but spammers are making the most of it with using its invite tool to pull in massive amounts of users.

While they might continue to thrive now, Facebook will eventually stamp its feet on all such groups. But isn’t it too late? I mean if I were to create such a viral group and convert less than half of those people towards various sites and offers, I could have actually generated a healthy revenue. The other reason why the numbers on these groups never decrease is that many of the users will most probably never quit a group once joined and the only way is either the group is deleted by the administrator or shut down by Facebook itself.

I would just give in a piece of advice to all users who fall prey to such scams, please do try to authenticate such offers, at least when they come humming about big brands and big offers. And incase you learn its a scam, do spread the word out.

As had been reported earlier, Facebook is going live with its Email API for applications. Thankfully enough, it will remove all those annoying notifications from the millions of apps that swarm the social network. The API is will alter how the apps communicate with the users shifting their mode from flocking your news feeds, etc to email. That too if you do want them to communicate via emails.

The notifications API will continue to function for another month, meaning it will be removed by mid February. While that does nothing good for users save for freeing you from notifications but developers would use the emails provided to notify you of the latest development about their apps and information. Plus data on what you have been doing using their app and be prepared to get reminders now and then in your inboxes if you haven’t used a particular app for quite some time. Well Facebook really wants to get the word across and it will be promoting the new API a the top of every apps page for the entire next month. The best part here is that Facebook will be providing its users with a Facebook extended email ID [xyx@proxy.facebook.com] to make sure that you don’t compromise sharing your personal email ID.

There has been quite a lot of emphasis on cleaning up the home page of users as well as other applications leveraging user trust on the social network. There is an app from NutshellMail that enables page administrators to send newsletter for their fans on the fan pages.

AT&T Facebook Drama: Security Flaw Taken Care For

Earlier yesterday CNET reported that a glitch in AT&T causes users to login into someone else’s accounts using their credentials. Bong! The issue wasn’t with Facebook as already said, but with AT&T when users logged in with their credits to the social network on their mobiles. The problem was with handling request of accounts accessibility from the carrier to Facebook. The first of these being disabling subscriber identification for automatic logon. Is Lexicon Dead On Facebook?

I guess its pretty common to get disconnected with what has been happening with the countless apps that Facebook has. It appears that one such app; Lexicon has fallen prey to this negligence and all support from Facebook has ceased. I just wonder why Facebook has done so given that it continues to publish data via Memology, whereas Lexicon hasn’t seen any update since July last year.

The lack of discussion around the tool shows clearly that it wasn’t being used at all by its users, which is also the reason why Facebook hasn’t actually reported on any development. The tool itself wasn’t that great of a use and its absence shouldn’t really bother anyone around, but it was different when it was launched, providing useful insight on stats and trends on the social network. The purpose was obvious, Facebook needed to analyze the data that users shares, including wall posts and other that they made available for public. The result provided popularity of the words or phrases you searched for, pretty much like Google Trends.

While the graph doesn’t show anything after July 1st 2008, there has been no notable activity on the tool for almost a month. What’s surprising is that Facebook had talked about releasing its new version of Lexicon back in September. But it has been long since then and no further reports have rolled out regarding it anywhere. I guess it’s been out and done with, it might very well disappear from Facebook soon enough. By the way how many of you actually used the tool and found it useful?

We Are With You Conan!’ Supporters Move I’M With COCO Out From Facebook

The hype began on Facebook when almost everyone joined in to support Conan O’Brien by being a part of the I’m With COCO campaign. Looks like what started in the virtual sphere by real people is coming out into the real world as people organized rallies in New York, Seattle, Los Angeles and Chicago. The fans are rallying in to support the Tonight Show, perhaps they realized that a massive Facebook Page isn’t going to get any good out.

The major showdown is taking place right where the show was hosted in L.A. and the pack is lead by Steven Ho, who was also the first guest on the show. The word has really got out into the real world after it has amassed more than 300,000 fans on Facebook. The numbers for the events include over 1,600 guests who have confirmed their attendance for LA while another 1,000 might join in Chicago.

That makes it the first large event on Facebook or to put it more correctly the first Rally for a cause in the real world after being seeded on Facebook. You can already see that Facebook is no more just about having rallies or groups functioning within the realms of the Web, rather users consider everything on the platform to be very real and to be serious about. While I bet this wouldn’t really help Conan with his job, but it will lift his spirit up to see how his fans are there to support him.

While Everyone Else Madly Creates Fan Pages: Manchester United Prefers To Stay Away From Facebook

It really surprised me a lot when I read that the name that is known to almost every sports fanatic and not just that of Soccer is officially not allowed to be on Facebook. Now that only applies to the official profiles and pages as of now. We are talking about Manchester United being absent from the social network. Very sad and even more astonishing. Why wouldn’t they resort to not having a fan page when they do have a website?

The news was broken forth by the football clubs communication department and the very news gives an idea that the club has no idea on how to maximize on the potential the social network has. The players have been strictly forbidden to create their profiles on the social network either. This sounds justified given the issues concerned with privacy. While I might be exaggerating here and siding with team management, I personally think it is quite justified given that valuable data might just leak out in one way or the other from the social network. But not having a page? Seriously this is more like ManU trying to be from stone age.

The management wants to make sure that the only source of news regarding the club should come from the clubs site. While that is perfectly fine, I think they could have leveraged the social networks population to drive more traffic to the primary site as well as actively engage the fans. A quick search for Manchester United reveals many unofficial pages, one of them has more than 360,000 users and the other is just a few thousand shy of 300,000. Which alone tells how much is being talked about the club across the network and that’s just Facebook, the conversation are in even large numbers on Twitter.

The strategy of sticking on with the more traditional form of media but eventually they are bound to lose big time. Fans want to be heard and the Web is giving them that power. While the social network has got everyone consumed within its platform, well to quite a large extent if I don’t exaggerate. I just think what is going to happen if somehow Facebook disappears? What is life going to be like? While I can’t speak on everyone else’s behalf life will have one task subtracted from my online activity and make it a bit simplified. Seriously I am beginning to have problems if I am not getting a response.

While my words can’t actually define or illustrate what life is going to be, the pictures speak a lot. Seriously for those of you who see life without Facebook being nothing but empty, you are bound to be doing what the pictures show. Enjoy!
