Garreg Goch Caravans For Sale

I have spent most of my life holidaying in caravans and during this time, I have enjoyed the superb experiences caravans offer. They are places of peace and gentleness, offering a toasty fire and leaves you succumbed to calmness. I have never had the pleasure of staying in a Willerby Rio however- but it is easy to see why it arrests the attention of gleeful holiday-makers: its' opulent furniture makes it, in comparison to other caravans, a superior holiday home. It is also as spacious as it is lavish, with room for 'floating lounge seating', as well as a master and two twin bedrooms, which meets the desires of any family on holiday. Furthermore, it offers an exclusive laminate vinyl bathroom floor and a mirror in the lounge, which you can smile into after you realise just how good the Rio is.

Should the respectable holiday-goer need more, there are some special specified options to offer: for instance, instead of two twin bedrooms, you can have a double bed, as a second bedroom. In addition, you can have an electric fire and a MP3 sound system ( just don't let your teenage children play their music though). It can also be wheelchair friendly, which reiterates the fact that it meets the needs of all customers. Need I say more? As a caravaner myself, I must say that the Willerby Rio is an exceptional caravan, which I hope one day to use and if you like space and comfort... well, you can experience a bit more with the Rio.

As the name of it suggests, the Rio is situated in the surprisingly generous climate of North Wales, that offers an astounding coastline that leaves you mesmerised. The nature is so supreme in this area of Wales, which is illustrated through the cacophony of cheerful birds and dazzling plants. Do you like mountain climbing? The Piz Palu of Porthmadog, where Garreg Goch is situated, is of course Moel Y Gest. I have climbed it myself and I will admit, it is something that leaves you thrilled.

The view beneath is a fantastic spectacle and the sun deflects off the sea the way the beachballs bounce off the sand beside it. In addition, you can enjoy Black Rock sands, which will make your day brighter than the name itself.

Venture also into Criccieth itself, where I can give an exclusive suggestion to visit the Blue China, a friendly cafe that lies at the foot of Criccieth castle. It is a popular tourist attraction, that allows you to understand just how significant it was, as part of Edward I's 'Ring of Iron' castles across Wales. Also, on a hot day, visit Cadwaladers' ice cream, renowned for an abundance of luscious flavours( no wonder it's so famous). Through Criccieth, you can access other places, like Abersoch, that only takes a short time to reach. Abersoch has an array of wonderful, high profile shops and is the place, if this so meets your interests, where the best boats are sold by local brokers. Either going to Criccieth or Abersoch will guarantee a fun day out for the family, as well as the cease of groaning kids.

Back on Garreg Goch, as I have been made aware of, there is a new IT area where you can use iPads, Macs and other technology available. The wifi, as you may be totally aware of, isn't brilliant around the park, BUT, in the IT hub, the wifi works very well and can be a place to visit when you need to get football scores. The old, pre-modern toilet block has been demolished, paving way for more room, in which I am only sure will be used well. I have been a visitor at Garreg Goch for many years and the growth of it over the past years has been superb- so come over and visit, in a superb Willerby Rio! Quality is something that is always assured on Garreg Goch, but the Willerby Rio really is our favourite holiday home.

Wildlife Watching With Coastdale Parks

The cliffs of the coast are a haven for all manner of sealife and perfect for bird watching. RSPB Bempton Cliffs is a family favourite, and easily the best place in England to see, hear and smell seabirds! From April to August more than 200,000 birds make the cliffs seem alive. Take yourself on a bracing walk along chalk clifftops - at over 650 feet, they're Britain's highest. The skies are filled with puffins, gannets and guillemots. It's an astonishing sight. The RSPB is developing a National Seabird Centre there too, which will make bird watching even more accessible.

Whitby is the finest place for whale watching on the Yorkshire coast and early autumn evenings are the best time. Between mid September and early November, one of Whitby Coastal Cruises purpose-built, twin-decked pleasure boats leaves Whitby harbour in search of minke whales that follow the shoals of North Sea herring which swim down from the Arctic to their spawning grounds off Whitby.

For an out of this world experience, head off to the eerily enchanting Spurn Point, a prime spot for migrating birdlife. This unique hooked finger of sand and shingle sweeps across the mouth of the Humber into the North Sea. At 5km long but a mere 50m wide at times, it's a ghostly wilderness and a National Nature Reserve with a weird beauty all of its own. Head for the deserted lighthouse at the fingertip and look for terns and plovers which nest among spiky, dusty-blue clumps of sea holly and the vivid yellow blossoms of horned holly.

With decline of the honeybee population and the threat of rising food prices left in the wake of their extinction, how will you be affected but more importantly how will your children be affected.

In 1907 a report from the New York State Department of Agriculture discussed experiments that indicated many crops were dependent on bees for productive pollination, e.g., apple, cherry, pear, strawberry, raspberry, red clover, white clover, melon, squash, pumpkin, and cucumber. In a typical experiment researchers placed netting around some branches of an apple tree to exclude bees and then determined that the number of blossoms was dramatically reduced.

The bee has a wider range of utility and is, in reality, one of the main keystones of agriculture. One of the most celebrated naturalists the world has ever produced once declared this: Suppress the bee from the earth, and by so doing you will suppress at least one hundred thousand plants that will not survive. Remember that the milk and cattle industry are largely dependent on the bee for the fertilization of the clovers.

How many crops of different fruits are dependent on the bee for success? The bee is one of the main links of that wonderful chain forged by nature, and wherever that link is broken, there is bound to be trouble somewhere.

FOUR SKELETON SLIDERS READY TO TAKE ON SOCHI 2014

The British Olympic Association (BOA) today announced that four skeleton athletes have been officially selected for Team GB for the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

Selected athletes are (athlete profiles can be found on Team GB Athletes):

· Kristan Bromley (born: Waterfoot, Rossendale, lives: Sheffield)

· Dominic Parsons (born: London, lives: Bath)

· Shelley Rudman (born: Wiltshire, Lives: Sheffield)

· Lizzy Yarnold (born: Sevenoaks, lives: Bath)

Commented Sochi 2014 Team GB Chef de Mission Mike Hay:

"Going into these Olympic Winter Games with a current world champion in Shelley, and Lizzy having had a straight run of seven podiums, four of them gold medals on the skeleton world cup circuit, will surely make for some exciting competition in Sochi. Add that to that the fact that a skeleton athlete has medalled at the last three Games and I think we will have all eyes on the track come 13th, 14th and 15th of Feb when our women and men compete."

Lizzy Yarnold: “This really is a dream come true – my whole life I have dreamt about becoming a British Olympian and for the last five years since I took up skeleton, competing at Sochi 2014 has been my primary focus. This season has been great for my preparation, I am in a good place both physically and mentally - and I can’t wait to get back on the Sochi track, go over the lines and maintain my focus. I don’t take part in races to come second, so I will approach the Olympic Winter Games as I do every race and give it everything I’ve got!”

Shelley Rudman: “I am delighted to be selected for Team GB for my third Winter Olympics and take great pride in that achievement alone; when I started out in skeleton I would never have thought that was possible! My first Games in Turin in 2006 where I won the silver medal was a hugely positive experience for me, Vancouver in 2010 was disappointing after I just missed out on a medal – so going into Sochi I hope I will be able to merge all my experiences from the last two Olympiads to give myself the best possible chance of success. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported me up to now and I hope I will make you all proud in these Olympic Winter Games, whatever the outcome may be.”

Dominic Parsons: “Sochi has been my goal for so long that I'm very relieved to have been selected, and excited about the opportunity to represent Team GB at the Winter Olympics. I have tried to take this season race by race, focussing on my development at each event to make sure that I can perform at my best at the Games. My performances during the season have shown that I have the ability to be up there in the medal zone, so my aim over the next few weeks is to make sure I have the best preparation so that I can produce my best performance when it counts.

Kristan Bromley: “I am incredibly proud to be selected for my fourth Olympic Winter Games; representing your country at the Olympics is the pinnacle of any sport and the stuff that dreams are made of. It makes it even more special that it is exactly 20 years to the month since the first time I tried skeleton - to have remained at the top of the sport for that time, gives me a wealth of experience to take to Sochi. Every Olympic campaign has been 4 years of hard work to get there and has pushed me to raise my game going into each season. This year has been no different. I have been working with a focus on Sochi, and signs are showing that my performance is on track. I’m excited about competing in Sochi and will give it my all.”

Performance Director Nigel Laughton said:

“I am delighted that we have such a strong skeleton squad representing Team GB at the Olympic Winter Games. Collectively, our season has been excellent, with medals and Top 6 results at every World Cup, and hence the athletes will arrive in Sochi ready, prepared and confident ahead of this exhilarating competition. The team of athletes selected encompass a healthy balance of experience, previous Olympic success, youth and outstanding current form, and whilst for Lizzy and Dom this will be their first Olympics, for Shelley and Kristan, their 3rd and 4th respectively - incredible achievements in their own right.

“A similar balance exists amongst the coaching and support staff chosen to ensure we provide the optimal performance environment in which the athletes can thrive in the final weeks before Sochi. It is a great honour to lead this squad, ably supported by Head Ice Coach, Andi Schmid. Naturally, there is disappointment not to have qualified a full quota of 3 men and 3 women, however in gaining quota places for the team and their subsequent selections Lizzy, Shelley, Dom and Kristan can be exceptionally pleased with their own performances.

“I would like to take the opportunity to thank all our partners, sponsors and supporters, particularly UK Sport and the National Lottery who have been instrumental in getting us to the ‘Start Block’ in Sochi. England finished top of European Group H to reach the 2014 FIFA World Cup™ after securing victory on the final matchday against Poland, banishing the demons of four decades earlier when a draw against the same opponents saw the Three Lions miss out on the 1974 tournament.

The road to Brazil 2014 was not as smooth as their campaign to reach South Africa, where they won nine of their ten matches on the way to the 2010 finals. Even though Roy Hodgson guided his side to an undefeated campaign, automatic qualification evaded England until the final match at Wembley. Two draws against closest rivals Ukraine, as well as stalemates in Warsaw and Podogorica, left England fans nervous until captain Steven Gerrard put the home match against Poland beyond doubt with a late goal to double his side's advantage and seal qualification.

FIFA World Cup finals history England have appeared at 13 editions of the FIFA World Cup, including seven of the last eight. They were below-par at South Africa in 2010, narrowly qualifying from their group with a victory in the final match against Slovenia, before being outclassed 4-1 by Joachim Low’s Germany at the Round of 16 stage. The Three Lions have been FIFA World Cup winners once, in 1966 when they were hosts, but have since suffered a succession of early exits. Sir Bobby Robson came closest to matching the achievements of Sir Alf Ramsey’s ‘Wingless Wonders’, guiding England to the semi-finals at Italy 1990 only to be knocked out on penalties by Germany.

The key players
Wayne Rooney remains England’s greatest talent and his seven goals in six World Cup qualifying starts underlined his importance to Roy Hodgson's side. In midfield, Gerrard and Frank Lampard provide experience and creativity while young guns Jack Wilshere, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Andros Townsend highlight the Three Lions' attacking flair for the future. Danny Welbeck came into his own during qualification, scoring four goals on the way to the finals, while Daniel Sturridge's emergence as one of the English Premier League's top forwards can only bolster Roy Hodgson's attacking options for Brazil.

Discover Hayle

Surrounding a beautiful estuary on the edge of St Ives Bay in West Cornwall, archaeological excavations of Greek and Roman pottery suggest Hayle was an important trading port for tin thousands of years ago and during the industrial revolution copper smelting flourished in the town, the importance of which saw the town’s harbour and townscape being granted World Heritage Site status in 2006. Hayle was the first town in Cornwall to be awarded Walkers Are Welcome status which means the footpaths and trails around the town are well maintained and well-marked and with plenty of rugged countryside around, it’s an ideal place to pull on your hiking boots. To the west lie 3 miles of golden sands and with a constant breeze off the Atlantic, the area is well-known for its surfing, windsailing and blokarting. Hayle’s wide estuary, managed by the RSPB and the UK’s most south westerly, is an important stopping off point for migratory birds.

Things to do in Hayle
Visit Hayle’s Oral History Centre, situated in the Old Brewery Offices, where you can become absorbed in tales told by true Hayle residents about life long ago in the town. Take a look at the photographic display and anecdotes written by local people. Open Tuesdays and Thursday 10.00 - 1.00

The Hayle Estuary Reserve incorporates Copperhouse Pool, built in 1788 which is bordered by the subtropical King George V Memorial Walk. Take a stroll here and see the astonishing display of flowers and plants.

Try a traditional Cornish pasty from Philps Famous Pasty shop, the debates rages but some say they are the best in Cornwall.

If surfing is your bag, Gwithian is the place to go. This three mile long beach is a surfer’s paradise and afterwards visit the Sunset Café for a welcome drink and snack. You can also hire surfboards and wetsuits here and book surf lessons.

Paradise Park and Jungle Barn has been entertaining families for decades and is home to over 650 birds including rare parrots, flamingos, toucans and even red-billed Cornish choughs. At the Fun Farm kids can interact with donkeys, goats, rabbits and guinea pigs and the undercover play area at Jungle Barn is ideal for rainy days.

Hayle estuary is a protected reserve managed by the RSPB and attracts birds and twitchers from far and wide. Visit the RSPB hide at Ryan’s Field just outside Hayle where there is always a chalkboard with reports of all the latest bird sightings or heading east along the Towans to Godrevy Lighthouse, look over the cliffs and see the seals with their young in the bay.

Atlantic Coast Holiday Park is a quiet and friendly 4 star holiday park, lying close to the sand dunes of the glorious St. Ives Bay, near Hayle in Cornwall. Blue Flag awards given to 55 beaches in England

More than 50 English beaches have met tough new EU standards to receive Blue Flag awards, recognising their high standards and water quality.

Thanet in Kent won eight awards, while the Isle of Wight, Bournemouth and Poole in Dorset, and Torbay in Devon each received four awards.

Campaign group Keep Britain Tidy runs the awards scheme in England.

The 55-beach total is down from 79 in 2012, but this year beaches were subject to much tougher standards.

'Town asset'

They had to meet the new "excellent" standard required under the new EU Bathing Waters Directive.

Beaches also had to advise users where they could obtain real-time information on discharges from nearby combined sewage overflows if it could temporarily affect the quality of bathing water.

Other well-known beaches awarded Blue Flags this year included Central Beach in Skegness, Lincolnshire; Lowestoft South Claremont in Suffolk; Martello Bay at Clacton-on-Sea in Essex; and Whitby in North Yorkshire.

Westward Ho! beach in North Devon was awarded a Blue Flag for the 10th year in a row.

A further 133 beaches in England were rated clean enough to be awarded Seaside Awards - formerly known as Quality Coast Awards - by Keep Britain Tidy.

The Isle of Wight won the most awards nationwide, with a total of four Blue Flags and 13 Seaside Awards.

Richard McIlwain, Keep Britain Tidy operations director, said: "Keep Britain Tidy campaigns to improve the quality of our local environment and we know that communities up and down the country love their beaches and understand what an asset they are for their towns' economies.

Holidaymakers and day trippers want to visit clean, safe beaches and the sight of the Blue Flag or Seaside Award flying gives them the reassurance that they will."

When you order a drink at The Wink in Lamorna you can almost imagine Alfred Munnings and best friend turned love rival, Gilbert Evans stood beside you at the bar. It was favoured drinking spot of the artists’ colony and with entertainment being as prolific as the art at the time, it played witness to many lively nights. Complete the experience by stepping into nearby The Cove which was once Jory’s Hotel and home to Gilbert Evans and later Florence and Alfred Munnings. Now a boutique hotel of apartments with a fine dining restaurant it was the base of choice for the cast and crew of Summer in February while filming.

Walk along the South West Coast Path
Secret lovers Gilbert and Florence enjoyed many walks along the South West Coast Path around Lamorna and it was one such walk that inspired the film's title. It was taken from one of Gilbert's diary entries, in which he wrote about a walk on the coast on a summer's day although the date it was recorded was in February. Fans of the story should also take a detour from the Coast Path to experience the Merry Maidens stone circle which was a favoured meeting place for the forbidden couple. Another must do is a visit to Porthcurno via the Coast Path which was used as the setting for a night-time beach party in the film.

Helston Flora Day

What’s it all about?

The origins of this famous celebration dance are more than likely pre-Christian and connected to ancient spring festivals that take place all over Europe. Nowadays the festival’s original purpose of ushering in a prosperous harvest expresses itself in a lively, colourful celebration that involves the whole town. A great family day out.

What happens?

The town is decked out with bluebells, gorse and laurel leaves gathered from the surrounding countryside. Dancing begins at 7.00am with gentlemen wearing shirts and ties and the ladies in light summer dresses. Not long after the Hal-an-Tow, a boisterous mummers’ play featuring scenes of St George slaying the Dragon begins cheered on by a crowd dressed in Lincoln green and Elizabethan robes. The children of the town dance at 10.00am wearing flowers and lily of the valley and at midday the formal dance of the day begins with men wearing morning dress and the ladies decked out in magnificent ball gowns and hats that could be the envy of Ascot. To round off the day of dancing, the Evening Dance starts from the Guildhall at 5pm.

How can you take part?

You'll probably have to park outside the town and walk in as thousands of visitors pack the streets all day to watch the dances. During the day the main street and down towards the boating lake buzzes with many stalls selling local souvenirs, Cornish crafts and food and a big fairground and there's a carnival atmosphere from dawn to well into the night.

Taking part in the dancing is by invitation only by applying to the Flora Day Association. The event is held every year on May 8th unless that day falls on a Sunday or Monday, when it is held on the preceding Saturday.

Did you know?

The Flora Dance melody, played during the celebrations every year by Helston Town Band, is said to date back to a pre-Christian times. Put to words in 1911 by London born composer Katie Moss, the lyrics are allegedly based on a true incident when, whilst visiting Helston Floral Day, Moss was grabbed by a stranger who enticed her to join in the dancing.

Petrol price to be cut by another 3p

Coming On A Touring, Motorhome or Hiring A Holiday Home this year in the UK it just got a little less expensive.....

Motorists will get a boost this weekend as Asda, Sainsbury's and Tesco will cut both unleaded and diesel prices by up to 2p a litre from tomorrow.

Prices vary locally at Sainsbury's and Tesco forecourts, but Asda says motorists will pay no more than 131.7p per litre for unleaded and no more than 135.7p per litre for diesel at its pumps from tomorrow (see our Cheap Petrol and Diesel guide to drive down costs).

Morrisons won't comment on whether or not it has any plans to do the same.

Today's move is the latest in a line of recent price drops made by the big four supermarkets. But the latest reductions won't necessarily mean any of these supermarkets will be the cheapest fuel provider. The website Petrolprices.com lists the cheapest in your area.

Earlier today, before the supermarkets announced their price drops, the AA said average unleaded prices could fall to about 134p a litre soon, thanks to wholesale fuel prices falling.

Supermarket cuts already helped push the average price of unleaded to 136.64p per litre on Wednesday, with the big four all cutting the price of unleaded at the pumps (see our Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Tesco cutting petrol prices MSE News story). This average price is 3.27p lower than a month ago.

Average diesel prices have fallen 4.94p to 141.44p over the past month, according to the motoring group.

AA president Edmund King said: "In the past 12 months, oil and fuel price speculation has swung back and forth through the fuel market like a wrecking ball, smashing family budgets, pulverising fuel demand, and rocking the foundations of fuel retailer and other business viability.

"At least, though, the current prices are going in the right direction, giving drivers a breath of optimistic spring air."

The Most Spectacular Springs In Decades

The warmer weather which is expected this week could herald one of the most spectacular springs in decades, with the arrival of migrant birdsand the mass emergence of insects, blossom and spring flowers, say naturalists.

But the prolonged winter may also have exacted a terrible toll on wildlife, with many birds, animals and plants perishing after months of bitter winds, limited food and repeated heavy snowfalls.

"The main pulse of southern migrant birds, such as swallows and housemartins, should arrive this weekend," said Matthew Oates, a naturalist with the National Trust. "The winds are at last in the right direction. There are reports of a lot of chiffchaffs in the Channel Islands. They may be stuck there."

Late springs are not unusual, but 2013 has been exceptional because of the unremitting cold.

"This is stretching my experience," said Oates. "Frogs have only just started turning up. Even in 1996 they had done their thing by the end of March. This is quite remarkable. The insects still haven't got going, but as soon as it warms up the midges and flies should be out. The bigger insects still haven't started."

Some ornithologists fear that tens of thousands of migrant birds which feed on the wing off insects and usually reach Britain by the start of April may have arrived and died.

"We're actually not sure where they all are," said Grahame Madge of the RSPB. "Possibly many have already arrived and perished. Or they may be hanging around waiting for the right conditions.

"Migrant birds like swallows, housemartins and willow warblers travel thousands of miles from sub-Saharan Africa to get here and use up all their fuel. When they arrive they are exhausted: they have probably lost half their body weight and are right on the edge of survival. If they arrive and there are no insects to feed on, they are in big trouble.

"We could be looking at a bleak picture. Swallows should be here by now to the point where the casual observer sees them in parks. But we're a long way from that. The evidence is that some of these birds have arrived but perished."

Reports of 11 stone curlews found dead in Norfolk last week, and others seen feeding on beaches, suggest that many birds are now desperate for food. The rare birds, who number only around 400 pairs in Britain, overwinter in Spain or North Africa and feed off spiders and other insects.

"If the birds have any sense they will have waited for the weather patterns to shift. They may take a cue from a few warm days. We could get a mass arrival. If this weekend coincides with a mass emergence of insects, those that have arrived could be the lucky ones," said Madge, who advised people to continue putting out bird food in their gardens.

Other wildlife is said to be on a knife-edge and desperate for warmth and food. Butterflies, struggling after one of the wettest years ever in 2012, have barely been seen. Humans have also been affected by the long winter and are close to their natural limits after many months of dull, cold, wet weather, according to Berkshire eco-psychologist Vivienne Bonnett. "This long winter has made us all feel lethargic. We find it hard to move on in our lives. People haven't even started spring-cleaning. All living creatures, including humans, need a sense of renewal, of getting rid of the old and finding the new. We have all had a terrible year, which has been bad for health. We all need to move on."

Oates of the National Trust is optimistic that this week will see the real start of spring: "Early spring often ends in tears. There is a long record of good summers following late springs. I love a late spring. It's all the sweeter after a long wait."

Weather pattern to bring a heatwave – Met Office

The Met Office 3 month forecast suggests that the same pattern which brought the cold weather could also bring a welcome heatwave by the end of spring.

Just a nudge to the south will mean winds come in from much warmer parts of the Continent. Even if that does not happen, as the interior of Europe warms (including Scandinavia) it will mean that the UK enjoys much warmer weather and will be protected from westerly gales.

The forecast reads: “By late spring, blocking patterns can bring warmer-than-average conditions to northern Europe and the UK.”

Dr Liz Bentley, of the Royal Meteorological Society, said the “blocking pattern” that has caused cold winters and springs in the UK recently has been blamed on climate change as melting Arctic ice could have caused the high pressure to move south – just north east of Britain.

She also said the pattern could mean a warmer spring.

She pointed out that last year’s warm spring was caused by a similar blocking pattern, except it was a littler further south.

It is unlikely March will break the record of 1.9C in 1962.

Looking back at weather history -

1906

The United Kingdom heatwave of 1911 was a particularly severe heat wave and associated drought. Records were set around the country for temperature in England, including the highest July temperature of 36C (97F) in Epsom, Surrey, only broken 79 years later in the 1990 heatwave.

The UK drought of 1955 and associated heatwave were a set of severe weather events that occurred over all parts of the country. The drought was the 7th worst drought in Yorkshire, and worse than the famous 1976 drought and heatwave in the region. The drought followed a period of extremely wet weather previous to the event, limiting the effects. However, the usual impacts were seen with water levels and the water table dropping and reservoirs running low.

The 1976 United Kingdom heat wave led to the hottest summer average temperature in the UK since records began. At the same time, the country suffered a severe drought.

The 1990 heat wave in the United Kingdom was a particularly severe heat event with temperatures hitting record highs of 37.1°C on 3 August. The temperature was recorded at Nailstone, Leicestershire, and was a full degree Celsius above the previous record, set in 1911. However, this record was subsequently broken in the 2003 heatwave.

The United Kingdom in general was suffering from a warm summer with temperatures well above average. However, Atlantic cyclones brought cool and wet weather for a short while at the end of July and very beginning of August before the temperatures started to increase substantially from 3 August onwards. Several weather records were broken in the United Kingdom, including the UK's highest recorded temperature 38.5 °C (101.3 °F) at Gravesend in Kent on 10 August. London also recorded 38.0 °C (100.4 °F). Scotland also broke its highest temperature record with 32.9 °C (91.2 °F) recorded in Greycrook in the Scottish borders on 9 August.^[23]According to the BBC around 2,000 more people than usual died in the United Kingdom during the 2003 heatwave.

The 2006 European heat wave was a period of exceptionally hot weather that arrived at the end of June 2006 in certain European countries. The United Kingdom, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Italy, Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Germany and western part of Russia were most affected. Several records were broken. In the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Ireland, and the UK, July 2006 was the warmest month since official measurements began.
The Spring of 2011 in the United Kingdom was exceptional for the warm weather which occurred during April and the dry weather which was persistent during March and April in certain parts of the UK. April was statistically the warmest and driest in the country since records began in 1910. There was a contrast between north-western parts of the UK which received substantial amounts of rainfall and south-eastern parts which received very little. As lack of rainfall continued in many parts during May, concerns arose that the country could submit to drought.
High pressure was the cause for the warm, dry weather experienced during April. A high temperature of 27.8°C was recorded on 23 April at Wisley, Surrey, the highest temperature recorded in April in the UK since 1949. Thus, the Central England Temperature for the month was 3.7°C above the 1971-2000 average, and daily maximum temperatures were up to 6°C higher than average.
The Autumn 2011 United Kingdom heat wave was a period of unseasonably hot weather which arrived towards the end of September 2011 and continued into October. As a result, record high temperatures for the country were broken for the autumn months. The Autumn heat wave followed the warmest temperatures to occur on record in the Spring, but also the coolest temperatures to occur in the Summer months since 1993.
The March 2012 United Kingdom heat wave was a period of unseasonable warm weather with temperatures getting above 20 °C (68 °F) in many places. The average temperature for this time of year in the United Kingdom is 10 °C (50 °F). Aboyne, Scotland, recorded a temperature of 23.6 °C (74.5 °F) on 27th March, the highest March temperature in Scotland since records began.

Historically when britain has a colder than normal March, April & May tend to be on average 22°C and 6°C over the national average. Years when this weather system happens see an above average summer.

St Michael's Mount is the place to be this Easter for some special family fun. What’s it all about?
Celebrating the end of winter and the coming of spring is a tradition that stretches back hundreds of years in West Cornwall and St Ives rekindled its connection to the past when it revived its May Day festival a few years ago. The event offers fun and excitement for all the family.

What happens?

At midday at the Guildhall the Grand Bard and Mayor choose the May Queen and King and their attending Prince and Princess, in a ceremony known bizarrely as the “pee whip” The St Ives Guisers, dressed in their traditional black and white "mock formal" make an appearance, horn blowers herald the start of spring and there’ll be May sticks. At 1pm there’s a parade to the harbour where you can watch May pole dances, traditional Cornish dancing and music. Various local choirs and brass bands perform by the harbour throughout the day.

How can you take part?

Parking is plentiful at the top of the town or you can forget the car and take the beautiful branch line off the mainline railway from Penzance. Throughout the May Day celebrations there’s a fish barbeque by the harbour and for some local shopping a lively harbour market where you can stock up on some of the region’s produce.
