That crafty lot over at WETA (fine makers of such things as oh…I dunno, Lord of the Rings?) are at it again. They’ve recently expanded Dr. Grordbort’s product line to include a miniaturized version of the practically sold out Goliathon 83. The good news is that this one is actually within the realm of affordability by mere mortals at only $49!

Its a limited edition run of 900, with 400 signed versions that were sold out at Comic Con just recently.

If you are interested in purchasing this fine piece of craftsmanship, their order page is here. If you’re not already familiar with Dr. Grordbort’s “Infallible Aether Oscillators & Other Marvelous Contraptions”, then you’ve been living in a hole and need to get your introduction with their “commercials” that they created for these products–take my word for it, they’re hilarious and have have the production values of the crew that brought you some of the best CGI that has yet been seen in movies.

Keep up the great work WETA!

A Japanese craftsman named Haruo Suekichi, has finally agreed to sell some of his fantastic steampunk watches that originally gained fame after a gallery of them was posted online last year. He’s selling two glorious steampunk men’s watches, and two steampunk women’s watches in a partnership with Chief magazine. Quite expensive at $1200 and $800 respectively but wow…seriously…wow.

One of the things that attracts me to steampunk (and I’m sure others as well) is the intricacies of the details. While the overall form is nice, the little steampunk refinements that he’s made to this such as the etched faces or the storage compartment are simply brilliant. What fan of steampunk doesn’t like little hidden compartments?!

While the price is a bit much for me personally, I think it reflects the quality of the workmanship. This isn’t something he pieced together in a weekend and the purchaser of such a fine work of art knows it. There’s definitely something to be said for wearing something that was hand-crafted and completely unique in the world.

Purchasing info and more pictures can be found here. You can also read a fascinating interview with the craftsman here where he talks about his watches.

Male Watch:

***Contest Update***

Well, it looks like we may have a chance to relaunch this contest in the near future. Stay tuned for our RSS feed for updates–the Kreigerhund might still be yours for the taking!

You’ve seen his work on BoingBoing, you’ve seen it on The Brother’s Brick, and even on Brass Goggles. Now you can win your very own custom-made “Kreigerhund” LEGO steampunk mecha direct from the craftsman himself (link goes to exclusive interview with Jamie).

Once you’ve finished drooling over the above image, you’ll find wondering how you can win this amazing steampunk artifact. Well, you see the Kreigerhund and its big brother the Dardenbahst are very three dimensional, and Jamie and I think there are a lot of talented artists out there who could create some fantastic 2D artwork incorporating one or both of these creations.

To that end, we are challenging all you artists out there to submit a single piece of art based off of these creations. After the submission period is over, I’ll post all of the submissions in a follow-up post with voting functionality and allow all of you to decide who should win the model. In addition, Jamie himself will be picking his favorite entry and the creator of that will receive a custom painted steampunk minifig!

In order to try to keep this as simple and fun as possible, there are only a few rules to follow.

Contest Rules

Artwork can be illustrative or painterly, LEGO-inspired or a re-imagining of what the model(s) would be like as a real machine. You can also Photoshop something using the actual images of the models which Jamie has so kindly allowed, but the name of the game here is creativity. We want to see what these models look like through YOUR eyes. Remember, you can either do the Kreigerhund or Dardenbahst or incorporate both into the same image.

Key dates/deadlines are as follows:

All artwork submissions must be received by *EDIT* Deadline TBD.

Once all submissions are in, Jamie will immediately select his favorite and we’ll announce the winner of the minifig.

The reader voting period will begin shortly after that and will last for two weeks. Exact dates will be given in the follow-up voting post, so be sure to subscribe to our RSS feed so you can be notified when voting has opened to check out all the cool work!

Winners will be announced the day after voting closes.

Limit of one submission per person.

We’ll be covering the costs of shipping for the model but we are not restricting this to the US…anybody in the world is welcome to enter!

To keep things simple and manageable in terms of posting entries, and to allow us to print out all your cool art in all its greatness, all art must be submitted as an 8.5×11, 300dpi hi-res JPEG. All entries must be emailed to haltingpoint@gmail.com with the subject: “LEGO Steampunk Contest Submission”.

Winners will be notified via email so please use a valid email address and make sure to add haltingpoint@gmail.com to your whitelist.

A minimum of 5 entries must be received for the contest to continue to the voting phase. During the first run we only received 2 entries and its kind of hard to have a contest without more.

BE CREATIVE!

That about covers it. In terms of resources and inspiration to get you started, you can find some standalone images of each model with a white background through the links below.

Dardenbahst Images

Kreigerhund Images

Feel free to post any questions as comments in this thread or email me directly at haltingpoint@gmail.com. Also, the more entries the merrier so tell your friends, spread the word on your blogs and in forums, use the buttons below to Stumble us, Digg us, you name it!

And 3…2…1…GO!

In our first addition of Crafter’s Spotlight, I’m pleased to introduce Mr. Jamie “Morgan19″ Spencer. Jamie is a LEGO enthusiast who has recently gained some fame on popular blogs such as BoingBoing, The Brothers Brick, and Brass Goggles for his “Dardenbahst” and “Kreigerhund” creations. These LEGO masterpieces are not only technically impressive from a design and construction standpoint, they also manage to perfectly encapsulate all that we fans of steampunk hold near and dear. From their metallic tanks to their custom painted minifigs, these are true works of art.

After a few emails with him, it became clear that he came from a similar background as myself. He grew up with LEGO much like myself and was fortunate enough to have parents who encouraged his creativity and tolerated the distinct sound of little hands rummaging through LEGO bins of that perfect part. His favorite LEGO themes were the Space and Castles lines which surely comes as no surprise after looking at all of his work on Brickshelf (also check out his MOCpages.com profile). Also, like many of us who group up with LEGO, he went through a bit of a “Dark Age”, which can simply be defined as a period of time in which you no longer have an active interest in LEGO.

Thank god he snapped out of that one! Now, combined with his skills as a graphic designer he is well-rounded creative who is able to bring his work to life in 2D as well as 3D. Before we dive into the interview, be sure to click the images below and view the full size schematics for his latest steampunk masterpieces.

You obviously have a lot of interest and talent for LEGO design, however most of your previous work seems to be of the futuristic variety–what inspired you to do steampunk-style creations?

The endless variations of futuristic worlds that the genre presents has always fascinated me so most creations I??ve built definitely skew towards science-fiction. I chose to dive into a new theme because of Kaminoan??s steampunk contest over at FineClonier.com. It was just one of those moments where I sat back and thought ??Well hey, I should give that a shot,?? and went from there.

How many hours would you say you invested into the Dardenbahst and Kriegerhund models including design time?

Because the Dardenbahst was my first venture into steampunkery, I needed to put in a chunk of research time upfront before I felt comfortable with the genre. While doing online research over the span of a couple weeks, the information I found on steam locomotives and other turn-of-the-century mechanics was especially instrumental in creating a real-world functionality for these two models to be grounded in.

That was followed by another two weeks?? worth of actual building during the evenings and weekends. I completed the Dardenbahst in a week and a half; the Kriegerhund was finished in a single weekend because a lot of its aesthetic and construction choices were carried over from the first model.

Tell us a bit about your design and planning process. Are you more of a “make it up as you go” type of LEGO designer or do you plan things out with software such as the LEGO Digital Designer?

Being a classically trained artist, I make sure to sketch out any ideas as I think of them and am always on the lookout for creative inspiration from the real world. Beyond that, it??s definitely a make-it-up-as-I-go process, complete with experimenting, re-builds, and the always pleasurable ??completely starting over from scratch??.

For example, I knew the general idea of the Dardenbahst before I started (a steampunk walker with arms and legs), but tinkered with at least four or five types of leg constructions over the course of several days before I??d even thought about what the main body would look like. Once I had the legs down, I moved on to the rest of the model and started the tinkering process over again, going through several versions before finding a body that both worked structurally and felt like a good design.

Where do you get most of your parts from? I notice a lot of them appear to be Technic parts, which make sense since they are perfect for steampunk, but I’m not sure what sets the helmet with goggles or the minifig outfits are from.

For better or worse (depending on who you ask), The LEGO Group has moved towards more of a Technic-centric construction approach in its base System models over the past decade. While that can mean fewer classic bricks in each set, it also opens up a ton of construction possibilities.

I don??t necessarily limit my collection to any one of LEGO??s lines so I happily pull accessories and parts from wherever will work. In this case many of the Technic pieces originated from the Star Wars and Exo-Force lines, while the source of minifig parts ranges anywhere from Indiana Jones to Castle. One of the greatest aspects of LEGO is that it??s all interchangeable!

Every LEGO project I’ve ever worked on as a kid had at least one problem with it that drove me absolutely bonkers trying to figure out, whether it be figuring out how to make mecha legs move better or how to make space for a minifig. What challenges did you face in creating these?

The overall stability of both MOCs was definitely a challenge. The Dardenbahst in particular was tricky as its legs are basically constructed from several extremely spindly bits, so I had to make sure they reinforced each other and could support the weight of the much bulkier body while at the same time still looking like functional sections of a machine.

What would your advice be for fans of steampunk and LEGO alike looking to creative similar works of art?

Research! Whether you??re browsing other members?? models on Brickshelf or perusing Google Images for inspiration, the best way to learn about something is to immerse yourself in it, soak it up, really get to know it, and then let your creativity loose.

And there you have it folks–a fantastic interview with a true master of his craft. Stay tuned for more exciting steampunk news and a chance to win your own Kreigerhund!
