Well this video has a lot of people within the steampunk community in a tiffy. Justin Bieber has been accused of destroying steampunk. Loads of mainstream musicians have have used steampunk aestetics in their videos before - Justin Bieber isn't the first and he probably won't be the last.

This gorgeous Victorian artificial arm is made from steel and brass. The elbow joint can be moved and the top join of the wrist allows rotation and up-and-down movement. The reason I haven't blogged properly in a while is because I'm studying A LOT nowadays. As most of you may already know I've started studying social psychology at Högskolan Väst, to become a social worker for people with psychiatric problems. So far it's great but I don't get any money from CSN, so it's a bit tough trying to find jobs at the same time. Anyways I'll get a bachelors degree in caring when I'm done in about three years & that'll be great.

On another note I'm going to be on telly the 13st of December on Swedish TV3 in a program called "Svenskars Hemliga Liv" which translates to Swedes Secret Lives. It's not so bad as it seems, as me & my mates are filmed as steampunkers and it'll be really interesting to see what they've done with all the material they had after filming me for about two days. It's a bit scary as television normally doesn't get the "right things" into a show, and there's always a case of me looking like a total freak in the eyes of the viewers. But what I really hope is that it gives a positive publicity to steampunk in general!

This is a video of youtube that shows us new technology and design that work together to make high-functional furniture for small homes (with wealthy owners!). But I can't help to think that it's be so much more awesome if the furniture would be steampunk! I can't imagine it could be that hard to re-design into neo-victorianism, but I'm not a furniture designer. ;)

English food

My mum used to make a Sunday roast and a lot of English food that I really appreciated! To get some of the items needed for making English food in Sweden can be quite tricky. Luckily we have a Indian market in Gothenburg and the more expensive "The English Shop". Traditional English food is awesome imo, and of course they ate this kind of food in the 19th century. Want to eat like the Queen Victoria? Check out these recipes Found on shopenglandonline.com

Giant Sausage Rolls

Ingredients

13oz puff pastry

1 onion

8oz of sausage meat

6oz cheddar cheese

2tsp tomato puree

2tsp bread crumbs

1 egg, beaten

milk, to glaze

salt and pepper, to taste

Method
- Mix all but the puff pastry and milk together.
- Roll the pastry out to a rectangle 30cm x 40cm (approx).
- Put the mix into the middle third of the pastry in a strip. Seal underneath with the milk.
- Glaze the top and slash three times diagonally.
- Bake in the oven at 200° C for 35-40 minutes.
Can be eaten hot or cold.

Cornish Pasty

Ingredients
Dough

2 cups flour
pinch of salt
3 oz. lard or shortening
1/3 - 1/2 cup water

Filling

1/4 lb. beef or chicken liver
1 rib celery 1/2 lb.
ground beef
1 small carrot salt & pepper
1 small turnip
2 raw potatoes
1 egg, beaten
1 small onion

Method
Dough
- Mix flour and lard, then add salt and water.
- Work into smooth dough and rest under a cover for 30 min. Meanwhile, prepare the filling.

Filling
- Chop liver coarsely in a blender and mix with beef.
- Add salt and pepper and let rest for 10-20 minutes.
- Peel onion and pare potatoes, carrot and turnip; slice thinly, and blanch in boiling water for 2-3 minutes with thinly sliced celery.
- Drain and season with salt & pepper.
- Roll out dough to 1/8 inch thickness; cut into 3 large squares.
- Put a layer of vegetables on half of each square and top it with the meat mixture.
- Brush edges of dough with egg and fold plain half over the meat; Pinch edges together tightly.
- Bake for 1 hour: first for 2-3 min. at 400°, then at 325° for 1 hour.

Sultana Malt Loaf

Ingredients

225g/8oz plain flour

½ tsp bicarbonate of soda

1 tsp baking powder

225g/8oz sultanas

50g/2oz demerara sugar

175g/6oz malt extract

1 tbsp black treacle

2 eggs, beaten

150ml/5fl oz strained cold black tea

Method
- Preheat the oven to 150°C/300°F/Gas 2. Grease and base line 2 x 450g/1lb loaf tins with greased greaseproof paper.
- Measure the flour, bicarbonate of soda and baking powder into a bowl. Stir in the sultanas.
- Gently heat the sugar, malt extract and black treacle together. Pour on to the dry ingredients with the beaten eggs and the tea. Beat well until smooth. Pour into the prepared tins.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 1 hour or until well risen and firm to the touch. Allow to cool for 10 minutes in the tins before turning out on to a wire rack to cool. These loaves are best kept for 2 days before eating.

They've made lots of stuff for Disney, and for the Wild Wild West movie (you know - the steampunk film woth Will Smith in it). They've also make special bicycles for Universal Studios and Cirque du Soleil. My faves are the classical replicas. Theatrophone

In July 2, 1892, Scientific American Supplement reported on the use of a device called the theatrophone that had been in use for two years already in Paris. The basic idea was to be able to call into a theater and hear live music being played. One could either subscribe to receive the service in home or utilize one of the theatrophones set up in various locales such as hotels, restaurants, vestibules, and cafes throughout the city. For 50 centimes, one could listen to five minutes of music. A wicket on the front of the machine displayed the theater from which the music was heard. There was one central station where the Theatrophone Company operated out of, and this was connected to several secondary stations that were placed in the theaters. A series of microphones were set up on the stage and picked up the sound to be transmitted back to the central station.

The theatrophone had 3 cables, 2 used for the transmission of music and the other for an alarm set for 5 minutes, keeping track of the listener’s time and changing theaters at each interval. If a listener happened to catch the live performance as it was ending or during an intermission, he would be wired into a different location for the remainder of time paid for. If all theaters were in an intermission, then the listener would be treated to recorded piano music so his money was not wasted. The alarm was operated by a crank, seen to the right of the operator. There was a stop mechanism within the alarm so that each revolution of the crank caused the ratchet wheel supporting the disk of names to advance one tooth at a time.

At the time of the article, there were 100 theatrophones installed in Paris running on 11 different lines, as well as a number of private subscribers who paid a fixed amount for a certain number of listenings in the home. “Such is the installation that very recently permitted the Lord Mayor of London to give some guests an opportunity of listening to the opera, and the prefect of Nantes to hear the latest popular songs without having to submit himself to the smoky atmosphere of the concert hall.” It was later reported that the prefect of Nantes canceled his theatrophone subscription once he realized how much he missed crowd surfing and that it was much easier to meet girls if he went out to concerts instead of staying home to listen by himself.
