Wrestler "Killer Kowalski" dies at 81

Canwest News ServicePublished: Sunday, August 31, 2008Killer Kowalski, one of Canada's most revered and feared professional wrestlers, died Saturday of complications from a heart attack. He was 81. Between 1947-77, the Windsor native, born Walter Spulnik, fought in a number of wrestling associations, including the National Wrestling Association and culminating in the World Wrestling Federation, where he won the tag-team championship.

Upon retiring from the ring in 1977, Kowalski opened an influential training school in Malden, Mass. Among his students were World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) stars Triple H, Chyna, and Perry Saturn. Kowalski's in-ring persona was typically that of a heel, or a villain, but when not sparring, the six-foot, seven-inch wrestler was known for his affable nature and being a vegetarian. Longtime WWE ringside announcer Jim Ross praised Kowalski for lifetime of dedication to the sport. "Walter was a staunch disciplinarian when he was actively teaching his students but had a heart of gold and a unique sense of humor," Ross wrote. "(He) was always considered too nice a guy by many promoters to be a wrestling "bad guy." The lifelong bachelor married for the first time in 2006. He is survived by his wife, Theresa.

How did you get your start in Wrestling? I've always loved roughhousing with guys and surprising them with my strength and viciousness, particularly since I look so sweet and gentle. A couple of years ago I decided to put on a bikini and do it for real, and I was hooked!

Where were you trained to Wrestle? I had a boyfriend who was a high school wrestler who taught me my first moves. A couple of years later I got the chance to wrestle competitively, which really helped me build my skills. Belle showed me some awesomely excruciatingly painful moves as well when I started working with Steel Kittens.

What is your favorite style of wrestling? I would say my style is vicious- I like slamming guys into the ropes, jumping on them, and squeezing until they cry for mercy! I also love dragging a girl around by the hair, since it takes the fight right out of her.

What is your favorite move and finishing hold? It's so hard to pick a favorite! I would say manhandling my opponent until he turns away, then getting his back, sinking my leg hooks in so he can't get away, and sliding my arm across his throat for the choke. It's so exhilarating to hear him wheezing for breath and then beg for mercy!

What other combat skills to you have and enjoy? Along with training BJJ, I also do some boxing and kick boxing a couple of times a week. I've got a mean right cross.

Any major injuries? No major injuries yet- I'm very careful to stretch and condition to hopefully prevent injuries.

What is your training discipline? If you're gonna do it, do it right- I try and train 5 or 6 days a week- a couple of times kickboxing, a couple of times ju-jitsu, and at least twice a week get out in the ring or on the mat and try and kick some ass!

What are your future plans or career goals? As long as I'm healthy, I want to keep wrestling and competing. I'm also about to finish school and get my CPA, so I've got brains to fall back on.

Fast Facts:

What are your interests outside the ring? Besides wrestling and working out, I like to cook, garden, read, and take my greyhound for long runs along the beach.

Favorite Desert? mmmmm...anything sticky and caramel and sweet.

Favorite Food? It's so hard to pick one...either a thick, tender, char-grilled strip steak with mushrooms and onions, or perhaps a perfectly juicy, tart, and complex tangerine.

Favorite Movie? I'm so fickle, this changes every few months.

My latest favorite? Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. If you haven't seen it, you should!

Favorite Car? For looks? Audi TT For practicality? a hybrid. Why isn't there a hybrid TT yet? :)

Favorite Store? Anywhere with designer high heels.

Favorite Drink? An unctuous ruby red glass of wine.

What is your most favorite thing to do when you relax?When I've got some serious time off, I love to take a bit of vacation somewhere sunny. Usually I don't have that much time, and content myself with some gardening and a great dinner instead. With some good intense wrestling for desert!

How did you get your start in Wrestling? I always LOVED wrestling as a kid, and when I was 14 I decided I really wanted to be a part of it. I started wrestling school at 17!!
Any hero’s in the business? I always loved Sunny. She was my inspiration. I wanted to be just like her when I was like 13! I also admire Trish Stratus because she had the determination to be on top.
Where were you trained to Wrestle? I trained at the LIWF doghouse in Brooklyn, NY.
Any favorite coaches or mentors? My trainer Homicide of course!! He is the best!! He really pushed me and I loved every minute of it.

For many years I have been ordering custom matches from different company’s. To my regret I’ve wasted a lot of time and money. My eyes were finally opened by the beautiful Belle and her Steel Kittens. For the past two years I’ve received nothing but the best custom matches.
Some company’s have beauty but lack talent. Steel Kittens gives you beauty, talent and better yet, Belle and her staff provide the best customer service I’ve ever received. Also the camera work, photo’s and make up are exceptional . The prices are more than reasonable for the work that is done. All that I can say is anyone not trying Steel Kittens does not want the best in custom matches.

How did you get your start in Wrestling? After a winning a bodybuilding show in New Jersey some promoters asked have I ever wrestled before? I said only in bed. I also said I love Professional Wrestling and I am very much interested in doing it.
Any hero’s in the business? Yes, My favorite The Rock, and Steve Austin.
Where were you trained to Wrestle? The School of Hard Knocks in California.
Any favorite coaches or mentors? Jesse Hernandez is the best and will always be my coach and mentor.
What is your favorite style of wrestling? Submission first, I love to go toe to toe.
What is your favorite move? The Power bomb.
What other combat skills to you have and enjoy? I am a dynamic submission wrestler and June ke do is my favorite combat style.
Any comments on your first bout? My first show was in San Diego and it was exciting and I loved every minute, the audience, the show and the win.
With whom have you had your best bouts at Steel Kittens? And why? My bout with Frankie was amazing she and I have a style very similiar, dirty fighting and she is a good size for me to destroy, lots of energy and lots of take downs and techniques. I love to see this in Wrestling matches.
Who is your toughest competitor? Japanesse Wrestlers, I love the way they give you their all.
What are some of your personal career highlights? My fights with Steel kittens and AWA and of course my Firm Series of fights.
Any major injuries? None as of yet. However because I am so muscular, I don't bend as well as others and I have to always understand that.
What is your training discipline? I run 6 days a week and train with weights 5 days and Pro training 4 days, so conditioning is how I stay in shape and learn my techniques. I believe in fitness first and training your skills just increase your chances of being the best.
What are your future plans or career goals? I teach others my fitness and training techniques to help others get into the field of Wrestling. It only makes me better.
Any other comments?: As a firefighter, bodybuilder, wrestler and fitness coach, I increase my chances of victory of wins in this sport.

What are your interests outside the ring? My family and friends, hiking, running with my dog and designing programs to help people live longer and get healthy.
What are your hobbies Hobbies? Fitness and any sport.
Favorite Desert? Frozen Fat free yogurt.
Favorite Food? Sushi (shashimi) Tuna.
Favorite Band? Xavier and Chazuka.

What is your most favorite thing to do when you relax? On the beach with my Itunes and a good book or Watch a comedy or a suspense thiller and be in the company of my family and friends. Been in any movies? STAN out this summer 2008

Interview with Raquel, Professional Women Wrestler

Biography: Raquel was trained by Peggy Lee Leather for Los Angeles based promotion "Women of Wrestling". Known as Caliente, her gimmick was a "Fiery Latina". Her love for Salsa dancing was the inspiration for this successful model, actress and writer. A graceful athlete and exciting performer, Raquel is an accomplished Professional Wrestler. Her (yet to be released) Steel Kittens matches are tough bouts with the likes of Valentina and her number one advisory, Onyx former "Bronco Billy" from "Women of Wrestling".

Interview Questions:

How did you get your start in Wrestling? I started on the TV show WOW--Women of Wrestling as Caliente--the salsa-dancing wrestler.
Any hero’s in the business? My favorite wrestler to watch of all time was Becky The Farmer's Daughter from WOW.
Where were you trained to Wrestle?
I tried out for WOW with almost a thousand women. We were trained for three months and every day people were cut until we ended up with about 25 women who became the cast for the show.
What is your favorite style of wrestling? Pro-style
What is your favorite move and finishing hold?
The Mexican Surfboard is my finishing move.
Any comments on your first bout? Riot from WOW hit me in the face, twice, with her steel, wrist brace during my first match with WOW. I remember thinking, "game on!"
With whom have you had your best bouts at Steel Kittens? And why? I had great chemistry with Onyx and I gave Frankie a great drop-kick.
Who is your toughest competitor? Onyx and I have an ongoing rivalry.
Any major injuries? No. Knock on wood.
What is your training discipline? I run on the beach a lot.
