1. Luckenbach Birthday Celebration – Luckenbach, Texas

2. Fredericksburg Crawfish Festival – Fredericksburg, Texas

3. 10th Annual Memorial Day Ceremony at Sun City Texas – Georgetown, Texas

   Details: Georgetown will be honoring those who sacrificed their lives in defense of the nation with its annual ceremony at the Williamson County Veterans Memorial Plaza. This one hour ceremony will feature the 36th Infantry division band from Camp Mabry in Austin. Seating is provided, but guests are allowed to bring their own seating arrangements as well.

4. Carry the Load – Burnet, Texas

   Details: Carry the load is an organization dedicated to raising money for veterans, active duty service members, law enforcement, firefighters and their families. San Antonio generally fizzles when it comes to big holiday festivals, but People magazine’s festival this year at the alamodome aims to put San Antonio on the map, as far as holiday festivals are concerned. This Labor Day People magazine will be bringing a plethora of Latino stars to the Alamodome for an enormous 2 day event celebrating the city’s Latino culture. Scheduled to appear are 3BALLMTY, Armando Correa, José Fernandéz, Larry Hernandez, María Marín, Los Recoditos Band, Kika Rocha, Prince Royce, Tito “El Bambino”, Jeannette Torres, Daddy Yankee, and Luis Miguel, among others. 3. Central Texas State Fair – Belton, Texas

4. Belton, Texashosts the Central Texas State Fair from August 31st through September 2nd, and this year, the fair has jumped from #8 to #2 on our list based on its stellar line up of Texas musicians, affordability, and activities offered. Texas music stalwarts Stoney LaRue (Aug. 31), Aaron Watson (Sep. 1), and the Casey Donahew Band (Sep. 2) will be headlining each day of the event with tickets priced at an affordable $8 per show. In addition the fair features Pro Bull Riding (extra cost), a carnival, livestock show, Mutton Bustin’ Championship for kids 4-7 years old as well as food and gifts from local vendors. Tickets are only $7 dollars. Needless to say, a pretty impressive lineup for our friends up in Belton and Bell County.

5. Josh Turner (Sep. 1) & Lyle Lovett (Sep. 2) @ Austin City Limits – Austin, Texas

6. Ok, while these two events are separate, they are being held in Austin at Austin City Limits on back to back nights, so we’ll call it a festival and leave it at that. Country star Josh Turner’s performance on Saturday September 1st will benefit the OM Foundation and Dell Children’s Hospital. Josh has 5 studio albums to date and multiple #1′s on the Billboard charts as well as 2 Platinum albums. Tickets range from $39 – $69 for Mr. Turner’s concert. On Sunday, Texas music legend Lyle Lovett brings his unique style to Austin City Limits. Don’t miss this 4 time Grammy award winning popular music legend live on stage. 7. West Fest Polka Festival – West, Texas

8. West Fest, one of Texas’ largest polka festivals, is back for Labor Day 2012. This annual celebration of Czechoslovakian culture and influence in Texas features nightly Polka concerts, a kolache bake-off, carnival, polka dancing, authentic food and drink, arts & crafts, souvenirs, the miss westfest pageant and a preview party on Friday August 31st with Texas Country Musicians John Slaughter, Kyle Bennett, and headliner Wade Bowen. This annual event routinely brings in 20,000 plus visitors so come early and stay late.

9. Luckenbach’s Labor Day Weekend Concerts – Luckenbach, Texas

    

10. Luckenbach never disappoints when it comes to the big holidays, and 2012 is no different. The fun starts with free music on Friday August 31st at 1 p.m.Luckenbach with T-Roy and Candace Miller, Sol Patch performs at 4 p.m., and Jason Allen will be playing a free show in the evening starting at 8 p.m. On Saturday the Rankin Twins will be playing a free show at 1 p.m. and Texas Country superstars Jason Boland and the Stragglers will perform at 8 p.m. as the main event. Sunday Micky and the Motorcars will be making a triumphant return to Luckenbach after the tragedy from earlier this year in which they lost their bassist prevented them from performing on Memorial Day. Tickets for Saturday and Sunday night’s shows will be $20 per show.

11. Kerrville Wine & Music Festival – Kerrville, Texas

12. If a weekend of beer, wine, and folk/country music is your cup of tea, then Kerrville’s annual Wine & Music Festival is the place to be this Labor Day Weekend. In years past this festival has been all about wine and music, but starting in 2012, the festival will be adding a brewfest! All three nights feature 5 concerts from musicians from Texas and beyond, and afternoon concerts start at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. 13. Palomino Fest & Pro Rodeo – Uvalde, Texas

14. Uvalde’s Labor Day holiday festival is taking a step forward this year with a carnival, BBQ cook-off, concerts, a pro rodeo, pig racing, a ventriloquist show, and a Grand Parade at 10 a.m. on Saturday September 1st. Uvalde’s Grammy award winning musicians “Los Palomino’s” will be headlining the event on Sunday, and Palomino Fest will feature continuous live music from Friday through Sunday. World famous rodeo clown, Leon Coffee will be grand marshall of the parade.

16. Bandera, Texas, a.k.a. “Cowboy Capital of the World”, is back with its annual Celebrate Bandera festival this Labor Day weekend. 18. For over a century Boerne, Texas has been hosting the Kendall County Fair with great success. In 2012 Boerne looks to continue that tradition with this 4 day event packed with rodeo events, a mutton bustin’ competition for the kids, a carnival, and live music on Saturday and Sunday. 20. Oatmeal & Bertram, Texas team up each year for the Oatmeal Festival on Labor Day Weekend. This year marks the 35th anniversary of the festival and features a pretty zany lineup of fun, food, and family entertainment. Perhaps the zaniest thing about this festival, is that every event starts 3 minutes after the hour. On Friday, the festivities kick off with a BBQ Dinner at Oatmeal Community Center at 5:03 p.m. Later that evening the Miss Oatmeal Pageant takes place. The bulk of the fun takes place on Saturday with a trail ride, fun run, family friendly live music, a pet parade, a Grand Parade, food court, arts & crafts, wacky food based games, and a concert in the evening by Texas Music Entertainer of the Year Pauline Reese. Saturday’s events start off at 8:03 a.m. and the closing concert starts at 9:03 p.m. so come early and stay late. And, maybe, you’ll find out just what the signifigance of the 3′s are.

21. Whitewater Amphitheater Concerts – New Braunfels, Texas

22. New Braunfels’ Whitewater Amphitheater will be hosting two starkly contrasting concerts this Labor Day Weekend. Perhaps the only thing tying them together at all are the fact that both headliners hail from the Lone Star State. On Friday alternative rock group, the Toadies, will be headlining “Dia de los Toadies”, a one day rock festival. Also featured are Mariachi El Bronx and Helmet along with 7 other bands.

• American Hero 25K Relay

  • The American Hero 25K Relay offers 4 different races to choose from includeing: a 25K five person, team relay; 25K run for solo runners; 5K Run/walk; and Kids Fun Run/Walk. Festivals and Events in the Austin and San Antonio Area for Memorial Day Weekend 2012

Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer for most Texas families, coinciding with the end of the school year. Following in our series of covering Central Texas events going on around Austin and San Antonio during the major holidays, we’ve been hard at work gathering info on this years festivities for Memorial Day Weekend in Central Texas. Because Memorial Day is also a time to honor our fallen heroes, it is also a time for reflection, thanks, and remembrance. We’ll be sharing ceremonies around Central Texas where you can go to honor our fallen soldiers and veterans in a forthcoming post. But, for now we’ll focus on family friendly events at which you can enjoy the unofficial start of summer in Central Texas.

• Luckenbach’s 160th for the 4th dang time – Luckenbach, Texas

• 

  “Everybody’s somebody in Luckenbach” and to celebrate that famous motto, Luckenbach is throwing its 160th birthday party for the 4th time (or their 164th for the first time if you’re counting for real). As always, Luckenbach has plenty of concerts and festivities for the Memorial Day weekend including Rosie Flores on Saturday night (5/26) (all ages and no cover charge). The big celebration is on Sunday (5/27) with Micky and the Motorcars and Jason Eady, plus a vintage baseball game with old timey rules and uniforms starting at 5 p.m. (tickets are available here for $20). On Monday The Gourd’s Ice Cream Social will be providing rock and roll for the moms and dads and plenty of fun for the kids from 1 p.m.-5p.m. From then, you may want to head down to our #4 event, for a few hours before returning for Austin favorite Bob Schneider and his Texas Bluegrass Massacre starting at 8 p.m. (tickets are $20 and available here).

• 2012 Kerrville Folk Festival – Kerrville, Texas

  Kerrvile’s Annual Folk & Music Fest is celebrating it’s 40th anniversary this year, and as always, the festivities begin on the Memorial Day Weekend. To commemorate 40 years of this famous Central Texas music festival, they’ve lined up some well known special guests to get the 2 week festival kick-started. Austinites will be familiar with Guy Forsyth and Jimmy LaFave among others on Thursday, May 24th. Former Texas Gubernatorial candidate Kinky Friedman will be playing on Friday May 25th along with Austin band Milkdrive. Russian polka band Limpopo takes the stage on Saturday May 26th. On Sunday May 27th guitarist Tom Prasado-Rao will be debuting songs from his new album. Tickets for the festival are available on the Kerville Folk & Music Fest website and are priced at $30 (5/24), $35 (5/25), and $40 (5/26,5/27). The festival also features concerts and performers for children at the Threadgill Memorial Theater plus Kids-Ville, an activity and learning center.

• 43rd Annual Fiesta Amistad – Round Rock, Texas

  Round Rock will be hosting the 43rd annual Fiesta Amistad, “Central Texas’ largest Hispanic 2 day event“, on Memorial Day Weekend 2012. The festival has grown steadily over four decades and this year will be hosted at the Lakeview Pavillion at Old Settler’s Park behind Dell Diamond in Round Rock. Festivities include concerts by Elida Reyna on (5/26) and Little Joe y la Familia (5/27) among others, as well as a car show on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. and a horseshoe tournament on Sunday at 12 p.m. In addition to the music, there will be family entertainment and plenty of excellent food.

• Fredericksburg Crawfish Festival – Fredricksburg, Texas

  Fredricksburg presents it’s growing, 6th annual Crawfish fest from May 25th-27th. Enjoy a bit of New Orleans in the heart of Texas. The Crawfish festival in Fredricksburg offers visitors Cajun and country music, crawfish and German sausages, and lots of fun for the kids as well. Highlights of the event include appearances by Billy Mata & The Texas Tradition (5/25), Little Texas (5/26), multiple cajun and zydeco musicians, lots of crawfish, a Gumbo Cook-off (5/26), and a washer pitching tournament (5/26). Admission is a reasonable $7 for adults and $1 for children 12 & under with 2 and 3 day passes available as well.

• The Cowboy Capital of the world, Bandera, Texas, will be hosting its 2012 RAM PRCA Pro Rodeo on Memorial Weekend, May 25th-27th. The rodeo will be going on all three days, while a BBQ cook-off will highlight Saturday’s events, and the 12th annual ‘Boot Kickin’ Golf Tournament will take place on Sunday. Kids activities include Mutton Bustin’, Calf Scramble and Stickhorse Races. Admission for adults is $12, ages 6-12 are $6, and 5 and under get in free!

1. Free Concerts at Luckenbach – Luckenbach, Texas

    

2. Again, Luckenbach offers up a weekend of free music with a variety of country artists. On Friday, the concerts begin at 1:00 pm with Jimmy Lee Jones and go into the night with dancing and a kick a boot band. On Saturday, the afternoon will begin again with a free band at 1:00 pm. Saturday night at 9:00 pm the only cover charge will be $15 to see Mickey and the Motorcars. Sunday and Monday will also feature free concerts. 3. Buddy Guy – Austin, Texas

Here is a legendary way to end the summer: join Rock and Roll Hall of famer blues guitarist, Buddy Guy at Austin City Limits Live for a night of music that has inspired the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaughn. Jus this year, Buddy Guy, won his sixth Grammy Award for his most current release, Living Proof. At Austin City LimitsLive, Guy will be playing with Michel Williams, the son of Texas Blues legend, Junior Medlow Williams. The show will be on Saturday, September 3rd at 8:00 pm. Tickets Range from $19.50 to $39.50 and doors will open at 6:30 pm.

5. Kerrville Wine & Music Festival – Kerrville, Texas

6. From September 2nd through the 4th ease into Fall by celebrating wine making and music. The Kerrville Wine and Music Festival is located at Quiet Valley Ranch (about 9 miles south of Kerrville, Texas) and will feature three 6-hour evening concerts and two 2-hour afternoon concerts. During the evening concerts, Texas’ top wine makers will offer up tastes, glasses, or bottles of their best vintages. The festival also features events such as yoga, bike rides, and wine seminars. 7. Celebrate Bandera 2011 – Bandera, Texas

8. Go back to the roots of the wild wild west with ‘the cowboy capital of the world’, Bandera, Texas. This Labor Day celebration beginning Thursday, September 1st and ending Saturday, September 3rd includes music, horses, bull fights, traditional pow wows, longhorn cattle, and the Kings of Western Swing. 9. West Fest Polka Festival – West, Texas

10. Each year, close to 20,000 people visit the town of West, Texason Labor Day weekend to celebrate Czechoslovakian food, dance, and culture. The West Fest Polka Festival includes fun for the whole family ranging from polka dancing to tractor pulls. The festival kicks off with a preview party Friday night from 5:30 pm to 12:30 am. On Saturday the fun continues with a parade at 10:00 am and open fair grounds until 12:30 am, and on Sunday, the fair grounds open at 8:00 am and close at 12:30 am, guaranteeing a full weekend of fun. On Friday night, adult tickets are $12 and children under the age of 12 are free! Saturday and Sunday adult tickets are $8 and children under the age of 6 are free!

11. Texas Labor Day Weekend Celebration – Uvalde, Texas

12. HEB presents the Labor Day Weekend Celebration at Uvalde Memorial Park on September 2nd and 3rd in Uvalde, Texas. Come out Friday night for the fourth annual Briscoe Ranch Beef Barbeque cook-off challenge hosted bye the South Texas CattleWomen. Saturday get the fun started with a parade at 11:00 am on North Getty Street. Admission to Uvalde Park will be free and the day’s activities will include arts and crafts, food vendors, live music, three-on-three basketball, and horseshoes. There will also be fun and games just for the kids such as a bungee bounce, pony rides, rock climbing, and inflatables.

13. Kendall County Fair – Boerne, Texas

14. 100 years later and Boerne, Texasis still helping us celebrate the Labor Day weekend with the Kendall County Fair. • This official San Antonio Independence Day Festival takes place at the Woodlawn Lake Park in the heart of San Antonio, Texas and the festivities start at 10 am and last until 9 pm. At 10 am there will be pre-parade fun and games followed by the Salute to the Red, White, and Blue Parade at 11. This family friendly event is an easy way to celebrate the nation’s birthday with games, food, and live music. The non-stop fun culminates in the H-E-B firework extravaganza at 9pm. • This Event has been Cancelled H-E-B Austin Symphony July 4th Concert & Fireworks

• On July 4th, at Auditorium Shores, thousands gather annually for the largest Independence Day celebration in Austin, TX. Led by the ASO music director, Peter Bay, this Fourth of July symphony will feature patriotic tunes. This night of spectacular music will finish with the 1812 Overture accompanied by 75-millimeter Howitzer canons, thanks to the Texas National Guard Salute Battery. The music will lead right into a half hour of dazzling fireworks over Lady Bird Lake. • Luckenbach’s 4th of July Celebration

• Here is another FREE, annual, Central Texas 4th of July bash. Located in Luckenbach, Texas this popular 4th of July festival starts at 1pm and lasts until 6pm featuring 5 hours of live music as is customary in Luckenback. Hosting the show are Walt and Tina Wilkins and other performances will include The Drakes, Tommy Alverson, and The Mystiqueros. After the celebration a special 4th of July edition of Picker’s Circle will take place from 6pm to 9pm with Bill Lewis, a singer, songwriter, guitarist, and pianist. • Kerrville’s 4th on the River featuring Kevin Fowler

• Celebrate the 4th of July in Kerrville on the banks of the Guadalupe in the historic downtown area with food, art, live music, and fireworks. This Independence Day Festival starts at 9 a.m. with a fine arts and crafts show and the music begins at 4 p.m. at Louise Hays Park. The concert features Texas country stalwarts Kevin Fowler and Charlie Robinson with special guests JB and the Moonshine Band and John Wolfe. Adult tickets are $20 in advance and $25 at the door. • Take a blanket and picnic basket to Pickrell Park this 4th of July in Schertz, Texas. This 4 day extravaganza includes live bands and music, a parade, bbq, apple pie contest, watermelon eating contest, and much, much more! Events and music from July 1st to the 3rd begin at 6pm and go to 11 pm.
