Your family members are going to be who they are most of the time. There’s so much sanity to just letting yourself flow with someone else’s predictability—their norm, their nature. Accept it. Forgive it. Just tolerate it; or peace out if you don’t want it in your life. But don’t waste too much time wishing you could change it. Bless it.

The post A prayer for ALL of us. Pray it loud this holiday (or anytime). appeared first on Danielle LaPorte.

Psychologist Clarissa Pinkola Estes calls it the “missing zygote theory”—the idea that you were born into the wrong household. The stork was supposed to drop you off to the family down the street: those cool, enlightened, or highly harmonious people that you can, like, totally relate to. But in a twist of karma, you got plunked with some lovely (but cuh-razy-in-their-own way) strangers.

So here you are, a full-fledged grown up, feeling like a child at your family function. How can this be? You have your VERY OWN LIFE. You’re someone’s boss. You dress your own self. Your friends think you’re wise and hilarious and together. But no one can pull your emotional triggers or wipe out years of good therapy like yer kinfolk can.

My fellow grown up, let’s get you centered in your truth and prepped for gatherings… so you don’t end up in the bathroom panic-dialing your therapist. You have the inner resources. Acceptance! Compassion! And so much LOVE!

Here’s a prayer to bring that LOVE to the dinner table. Please print this out to read before meals. And ask everyone to toast to sanity.

A PRAYER FOR ALL OF US
– Danielle LaPorte

We give thanks for our togetherness,
our sameness, our contrasts,
and the light we reflect
to one another.

We give thanks for the Holy
that holds us, and the humanity
that brings us back to the Holy.

We ask that our happiness
be woven to the heart of the world,
and that our nourishment
feed the collective.

So be it. So it is.
May all be so blessed.

Focus on your own gorgeous heart. Hommmme. It was a cocktail of physical pain and anxious processing. It was training me how to surf the world upheaval. I’m grateful for it now. But whoa.

LeAnn has an exquisite heart and she knows a lot about what anxiety can do to your body and spirit—and how to heal and carry on. This conversation is intimate. With our shared challenges, and our dedication to God and love, we keep cheering each other on. We hope you feel it spilling out to you.

Is it a wise choice? How to tell.

Imagine deeply loving someone (a partner, child, friend). Feel that love. Wise decisions are always based in love and have nothing to prove to anyone.

The post Is it a wise choice? How to tell. appeared first on Danielle LaPorte.

Wise decisions aren’t an intellectual exercise. They aren’t always rational, and they aren’t led by data or opinion—though a wise decision takes all the facts into consideration, it’s an inside-out process. Wise decisions are from the heart-mind. They aim for harmony, and they increase the vibration of love—within one’s self and the people involved (whether they’re conscious of it or not).

Your body, your job, what you eat, where you work, what you say…
Who you partner with, what you wear, how you speak in public…
What to buy, spend, commit to, depart from…

What’s wise?

SHADOW SELF DECISIONS
Is your decision based on the threat of consequences?
On fear of what might happen in the future?
On what people are going to say about you?
On fear of loss?

We might add up those fear fragments and call it “logic” (when it’s really just an anxiety bandaid).
And then we might call that logic “following our heart.”
But it’s really the shadow self trying to keep us safe and small.

The heart helps us expand-heal-serve.
Wise.

HEART CENTERED DECISIONS
How to know if you’ve made a wise decision? You feel peaceful about it. Doesn’t mean that there isn’t work ahead and hard changes to make. But you feel at peace with what needs to be done.

Another characteristic of wise choices is that the decision benefits, or is at least neutral, to everyone involved. Meaning, there’s no vengeance or emotional hooks in it. It’s loving.

REFLECTION
Imagine deeply loving someone (a partner, child, friend). Feel that love. Can you feel how you’d go the distance for them? How encouraging you’d be of them? Feel the reverence, the goodwill, and the protectiveness you have for them.

Now be THAT LOVING and respectful to yourself and from that heart space, give yourself wise counsel. Have your best interests at heart. Our best interest has everything to do with staying aligned with our Soul and moving in the direction of Compassion and Loving Kindness.

Wise decisions are always based in love and have nothing to prove to anyone.

Does the choice help you expand, heal and serve?

Your call.

With Love,

We need to heal.
We need each other.
We need each other to heal.
Furthermore…
Relationships are vehicles for healing.
And that’s my thesis on love in these times.

We need to heal.
We need each other.
We need each other to heal.

Furthermore…
Relationships are vehicles for healing.

And that’s my thesis on love in these times. A lot of relationships are under duress right now. Obviously. Wars are being fought with cell phones and policies. We’re breaking each other’s hearts. The collective shadow is UP. And it’s rising to get our attention. All of the pain that we’re delivering and enduring… it’s time to get really conscious with it all.

. . . . .

We manifest through the mind. We can use our mind to manifest division or union.

If we want to intentionally raise our energy vibration and move out of suffering, we need to feed the mind with love. This practice is ancient, it’s scientific, and it’s ESSENTIAL.

It’s also very simple and doable. Want to do it right now with me? K…

Bring to mind someone that you’re feeling the tension with. And do this, please:

Breathe into your heart and…
remember the good times.

This isn’t a trivial exercise. It raises your energy. It gets you back to the intelligence of love. All conflict happens when we step out of our heart awareness.

The relationships that you’re currently feeling stress within? Reach for memories that generate the energy of love.

The time you almost peed your pants laughing. When you turned to each other for support and wisdom and hilarity. The trips. How they helped you through the break up (or break down). When you went way out of your way to see them. The talks, the food, the music, the love. THE RELATIONSHIP.

You fell in love for a reason. You kept showing up for each other for a reason.

All those experiences of love were real. Love given is the light of consciousness being shared. Anything that’s not love isn’t real… it’s shadow.

We heal because of, and through, each other.

Look and listen beyond the issues that are straining the connection. Yes, there may be stuff to sort out. But what matters most is our loving bond. The rest is just a contest for our energy and time.

Remembering love will lift all of us beyond the noise of fear and ego. And the very reason for the global (and local) flare-ups is to remind us to remember what really matters. Our loving bond.

With Love,

Instead of: How do I want to feel?
Ask: WHAT DO I WANT TO EMBODY?

The post One very liberating question appeared first on Danielle LaPorte.

Instead of: How do I want to feel?
Ask: WHAT DO I WANT TO EMBODY?

10 years ago, my New Year’s Eve fireside revelation called The Desire Map came to be. Over 300,000 people resonated with the idea that “We should consider how we actually want to feel as we plan our lives.” It was a soulful take on goal setting.

[Tomorrow I’m releasing the next evolution of this movement, if I can call it that. Drop your info here if you want the full details.]

I’ve never been afraid to change my mind in public. I’m anchored to love and I’m here to evolve. And I’ve grown (one would hope, after a decade). I’ve been traversing shadow work and compassion. Moving closer to the heart center.

Here’s what I figure: we’re here to heal and live purposeful lives. And purposefulness is not predicated on feelings. You can feel sad and still do something meaningful. Even in your deepest suffering, you can bring healing to someone else’s life. I know many of us can relate to this now. We’re holding our own fears, and we’re showing up to hold others.

In my darkest moments, reaching out to check on someone else was medicine for both of us. So then, was my purpose that day about feeling happy? Nah. It was about being love.

Emotions come from the subconscious. Virtues are states of consciousness. Love is not an emotion, it’s a state of consciousness.

DESIRE HIGHER

Desire is part of the human construct. Believe me, I have looked at this every which way and inside out. Should I relinquish worldly desires? Can desire be virtuous? Have I just swapped my Catholic hangover with New Age halo polishing?

Here’s the conclusion, and my evolution:
Feelings are beautiful information. Every feeling—when observed through the heart—helps us become more conscious (it’s the heart that expands consciousness, not the other way around). Feelings are a global positioning system for the soul.

The mind will always desire. The mind is a numinous and powerful force that manifests our realities.

How does the mind serve the heart? In virtues. In “desiring” for higher states of consciousness—Loving Kindness, Compassion, Forgiving, Resilience, Courage…

Let’s use the mind for love.

. . . . .

So… “How do I want to feel?” blossoms into a fuller question:

WHAT DO I WANT TO EMBODY?

Honour the feelings, embody the virtues. THAT’s what this next chapter is about.

Okay. Tomorrow we launch. The path is paved and Love will lead the way. Join me here.

With Love,

The post What do you do with pain? A simple practice to breathe space into it. appeared first on Danielle LaPorte.

I’m not trying to save the world anymore. Not because I think that my actions don’t matter—every action by every one of us counts. And I’m not giving up on the world because I believe it’s a lost cause—we’re at a fantastic threshold of awakening.

The most powerful thing I can do for the world is to heal myself. When I heal my own inner conflicts, immune system, and polarizations, two beautiful things occur…

ONE
I’m less of a burden, so to speak, on the system. I need less time and energy from friends, healthcare professionals, and social structures in general (worth noting that I live in Canada and, although we’re looking rather draconian these days, we do have free healthcare, which is exquisitely humane).

TWO
When I focus on healing myself, I tap into a deep reserve of self compassion—and self compassion is one of the most unifying forces in the universe. When you practice Loving Kindness toward yourself, you will feel connected to humanity.

Self healing melts the illusory lines between “self” and “other.” When you begin to find peace for yourself where there was once fear, and strength where there was chaos, you will naturally want to help others to find ease. You’ll become very encouraging. But mostly, you’ll be patient with everyone’s healing process.

It’s not your job to singularly save the world—or your partner, or the government. But it’s very much your job to heal yourself. And in healing yourself, you can inspire some people around you to heal themselves.

Imagine if tyrants healed their parent issues and started doing breathwork. Or greedy folk atoned for their imbalance with generosity. Or imagine yourself forgiving everyone you resent and meditating daily to restore your nervous system and align with your Soul’s guidance. And this: envision how your individual pain connects you to the collective.

I just so happen to have an exercise for that!

A simple how-to…

1. Think about a small pain of yours that you’re dealing with. A very manageable kind of suffering (we’re not going for the big trauma stuff with this exercise.) Okay…

2. Gently embrace that pain, breathe into it. Use your heart’s mind to do this, you already know how. Focus. Feel your pain without judgment. Pour on warm, luminous compassion. No bypassing, just all respect and attention. Depending on the spectrum of your pain, this could take thirty seconds while you’re in your kitchen, or a year of daily contemplation. You let your pain soften you.

Now we’re going to go from a personal to a transpersonal level. You’re going to use your pain point to create a connection with someone else.

3. Gently ask yourself:

Who else is experiencing this similar pain as me—or worse?
Is there a way I can help comfort them or alleviate their pain?

This is not to invalidate your own suffering. It’s to validate someone else’s. This is an act of inclusiveness. It’s not to take on their suffering, that’s highly counter-productive. This is to witness another’s suffering. And that’s love that transmutes pain.

THAT’s making the most of this situation. And it will save us all.

With you every step of the way,

If you can see yourself facilitating this type of exercise with people, we’ve got what you need to get started right HERE. Healing happens when we all go deeper, together.

I’ve heard it from so many women this past year: can’t sleep through the night. Waking up at weird hours. Anxiety that’s never been there is showing up… Interrupted sleep can be created by excess cortisol, which then impacts our insulin levels and our physical energy. It’s a stress loop.

Dumps of cortisol come when doom scroll, worry, and argue. We need to care for ourselves more thoroughly. We need to get our central nervous system out of the constant fight/flight and into rest and relax mode—which is our NATURAL and optimal state.

4 Calming Teas
To help reduce the inner stress and balance things out.

Throughout the day, drink any of the following teas:

1. Lavender

2. Chamomile
3. Tulsi (Holy Basil)
4. Lemon Balm

This also helps to stabilize our root chakra—our sense of safety—and reduce the impact of heightened stress levels on the adrenals. Which means less cortisol and more balanced insulin levels.

4 Calming Practices

MINDFUL BREATHING
The box breath technique is amazing:
1. Inhale for 4 counts.
2. Hold your breath for 4 counts.
3. Exhale for 4 counts.
4. Hold your breath for 4 counts.

PLEASE STRETCH! Create a mental reminder association for yourself. Everytime you go to the bathroom, stretch. Before you go to bed, stretch. After a meal… before you check social media. STRETCH. Every intentional body movement is bringing both blood flow and the light of love to your body.

COLD WATER. I KNOW, BUT COLD WATER! Cold baths and showers reset the Central Nervous System. You don’t need to go all Wim Hoff (unless you want to… I’ve taken up ocean swimming and it’s an utter miracle). But after a hot, soapy shower, splash some cold water on your body. You will be all the better for it.

You can gradually work your way up to this. Start by kneeling in the tub after a shower and just let the bath tap run. Splash water under each armpit and on your face 7 times. Then work up to cold splashing your chest, belly and most southern parts. Then increase to more splashing. You’ll get so used to that—and exhilarated, that eventually you’ll dig the simplicity and rush of cold shower water.

RADICALLY DECREASE YOUR NEWS + SOCIAL MEDIA INTAKE. Turn off the news. Delete the social apps from your phone for a week or two. And use your free time to… be free. At the very least, please take a break for a week. It’ll all be there when you get back. But you might be way less interested.

Less inner conflict = less cortisol dumping = greater health and wellness.

With Love,

Respect for your shame + awe for your doubt… treating our feelings with dignity.

If you were to look at yourself with a loving gaze, what would shift?

What old, limiting stories would start to dissolve? What tightness would loosen? What would be forgiven, relaxed, diminished, celebrated, more cherished?

That loving gaze is Reverence.

The post Respect for your shame + awe for your doubt… treating our feelings with dignity. appeared first on Danielle LaPorte.

If you were to look at yourself with a loving gaze, what would shift?

What old, limiting stories would start to dissolve? What tightness would loosen? What would be forgiven, relaxed, diminished, celebrated, more cherished?

That loving gaze is Reverence.

Rev.er.ence
noun
a feeling or attitude of deep respect tinged with awe; veneration.
Honour, revere, respect, homage.

When we show reverence to our shadow self, we come closer to our Higher Self.

Can you possibly imagine being in awe of your doubt? Instead of talking down to your worries, you would uphold them with respect.

Wow… dear doubt, l get that you’re trying to tell me something. You make me pause and remember my Faith. I see your service. Thank you for helping me to get centered.

And as the doubt (or fear, or anxiety) is so respectfully acknowledged, it begins to settle down. All feelings calm down when they are welcomed into your heart.

Picture what it would be like to show some respect to your shame… That’s a big one. That shamey energy that likes to hide in the dark corner hoping it never gets talked about. What if you gave it back its dignity?

Hello shame, I see you, I get why you feel the way you do—totally understandable. I’m going to go on living, creating things I’m proud of. But you’re welcome to stay while I get some work done.

And then, like Boo Radley coming out from the porch shadows, maybe your shame takes a step into the light of acceptance that you’ve so kindly turned on.

So let me ask you again:

If you were to look at yourself with a loving gaze, what would shift?

With Love,

This is heart centering work. It’s the work I’ve been up to for the last few years. It’s a powerful turning point. And I share monthly updates on everything I’ve learned… right here.

I was a farmhand that died in a snowbank. I misused crystal technologies in Atlantis. I was a Dutch woman living by an apple orchard…

How important is it to know about our past lives? For me… it’s not so important anymore. Does the past referencing help me to navigate my current life? Nah. Not at all. Interesting? Somewhat. Ultimately useful? Not very much.

Are my recollections real? Don’t know. I’m sure there are accurate segments. I deeply trust in a multi-incarnational existence. But… the ego is a watery interpreter of the past.

You can take some past life visions simply as mythology to help unpack themes in the present. You can ask yourself why you might have a particular sense or memory about the far past. What pain is it pointing to now? What repeating pattern is it showing me? All of those are useful questions—without having to go down the slope of whether you were Cleopatra or a disciple.

You can know that Wisdom is cumulative for the Soul. We bring all of our expansion forward with us, life to life. But the rest—personality traits, knowledge, and intellect… all that gets wiped from the slate.

Use your energy to process current time reality. It’s all we know for sure that we have.

Live fully now. The soul reveals all information on a need-to-know basis.

How I’ve radically simplified my life in the last year.

The practice of simplifying has consumed me in the best way possible. I’ve simplified every area of my life. It’s become a magnetic pull in my cells. The only other times I felt such a strong yearning were when I felt it was time to make a baby (let’s go!). And when I knew I wanted to commit to my current partner (all in, my Love!). Very. Deep. Callings. Biggest learning? Like birth and being in love…

Simplifying is the rapture that comes after the complexity you wish you’d avoided.

The post How I’ve radically simplified my life in the last year. appeared first on Danielle LaPorte.

The practice of simplifying has consumed me in the best way possible. Over the last year or so, I’ve simplified every area of my life.

HOME + STUFFS
I’ve let go of more than half of my material things. Sold it, gave it, recycled it, donated it. My old neighbourhood is rife with Free Piles in the alleys. For months my LIFE was the free pile. I let go of things I’d actually cherished. Like my grandmother’s dishes that I boxed up and hauled ‘cross country three times, but only used once a year. Alma bought those plates with food stamps during The Depression. I offered them for free on Craigslist and gave them to the person who seemed the most excited. That nice lady texted me photos of her and her hubby drinking tea with the cups and saucers. She also mentioned that she would pray for me. Thank you!

Worth noting: my son and I did about fifty transactions via Craigslist and other marketplaces. We left most items on our porch and asked people to just leave the money in the mailbox. Every person came through. Humans are good.

Also worth noting: “In case I need it,” is a racket. If you haven’t used it in over a year… considering move it on. Other people probably need it now. Just give it away.

I moved my son and me from a house with a yard into an apartment that’s walking distance to the ocean and giant Sequoias. I sold my bed frame, and just have my mattress on the floor. I gave away most of our art. I gave away all the wine glasses. Regular glasses are just fine. Vases, sacred objects, art supplies? Gifted it all. Paperwork, photos, files? Recycling bin.

My son and I (he’s a teenager) have dialled way back on buying anything brand new. It’s amazing what happens when you let your online shopping cart just sit there for a day. You come back and realize, Nope, don’t need that stuff either. If I do bring in something new, I remove something old from my closet or space.

I burned about seven years of journals. Pyre of relief, I tell you.

I cancelled my Amazon Prime membership and stopped shopping there almost completely. Not just for less consumption, but because Amazon is a major supporter of prison labour, which is part of the heinous racket of over incarcerating People of Colour. Watch Ava DuVernay’s stunning documentary The 13th. Also because Amazon’s founder’s phenomenal wealth would be better used to say, save the actual Amazon rainforest, or get clean drinking water to poisoned communities, rather than using that phenomenal wealth to invade life on Mars. As a small business, we’ve stopped linking my books and any products that we recommend to Amazon.

Speaking of books… Part of letting go of half of my material things included many boxes of books. Boxes of loved and well-marked books. Boxes of brand new books that I had never read but promised myself to read so I could feel more accomplished about all the books that I bought and then responsibly read. If I’m meant to read a book, I can bike over to my favourite independent bookstore and pick it up.

BEAUTY + BODY
I stopped coloring my hair—for a few reasons. Watching the hair dye spin down the drain was always guilt wracking. I can’t call myself an environmentalist and keep pouring super toxic substances into the water systems. Gaia or my vanity. I’m choosing Mother Earth. This was a “put my money where my body is” kind of decision. Also… Planet’s body = my body. Hair dye + many synthetic fragrances are proven endocrine disruptors… no bueno for hormone balance. (If you want to know more on the topic watch the documentary, Stink!)

The silver has started to filter in and I’m embracing it. This is me now and that’s that and I’m freeeeee.

I used to be the type of person who wouldn’t leave the house without her toes painted. Never chipped, I loved navy and mocha lacquer. It was a signature. Once a month, I’d flip flop down to the local mani pedi place for a treat… and feel guilty AF when I watched them use a plastic bag in the foot bath, and see pregnant technicians inhaling nail polish fumes. Done. Going on two years now of no polish, even in the summer. Life has not lost its deep meaning and I’m just as sexy.

BUSINESS
Simplifying can be complex and time consuming. We’ve started rearranging everything in the business to focus more deeply on fewer projects. You’ll see the shifts gradually unfold, especially with the new Heart Centered Facilitator Program that’s rolling out (get on the interested list HERE! It’s incredibly useful and applicable to so many industries and communities). Focusing more on our community feels like relishing, like nourishment, like growing beautiful relationships that create change.

After almost a decade of printing day planners and Truthbomb decks, we retired ALL OF IT! Massive decision. Design, printing, shipping, warehousing and distributing printed goods is a complex business. Different provincial and state taxes, shipping returns, trying to compete with Amazon’s undercutting… it’s a lot. In the case of the day planner, we had to design them 14 months in advance of launch. That’s not how I want to live. It’s a tough business and it’s not why I’m here on the planet. There are many other eco-friendly planners out there. I do think ours was one of the most “soulful” and effective… but I can deliver that soulfulness in so many other ways.

Phasing out my printed products allowed us to end our relationship with our warehouse/fulfilment company. They were great, but what sweet relief to stop spying pick n’ pack fees and for storage space. In turn this allowed us to lighten up on HR hours on our own team. Also… bye bye packaging costs.

On the digital front… We reorganized 11 years’worth of content into a new website (!)—that took nine months. In the process, I canned dozens and dozens of writings that I no longer resonate with. Trimmed it all down to what I can still stand by in my heart. Free.

SPEAKING GIGS
I’m not travelling for speaking gigs. Not because of any restrictions or caution. Just… simplifying. It turned out that I’m having just as intimate of an experience with an audience or team on Zoom. I miss high heels but I also let most of my shoes go so… barefoot n’ philosophical is working just fine. Hire me.

NOT DOINGS
I used to paint. On canvases. Big abstracts of circles and seeds. My stuff was never that great. Maybe it could have been but I decided that being the next Rothko isn’t my dharma. So I retired. I have a vocation. Heart Centered is it. So I gave my materials to a truly talented painter, who also happens to be my best friend: Candis Hoey. It got down to this: do I want to paint for the zero people who see my work? Or do I want to spend time with the people I love? People over paint.

RELATIONSHIPS
I’ve relaxed a lot of my efforting with relationships. This wasn’t intentional at first. It was the result of a calmer nervous system and more quiet and space in my life. That energy just flowed into… everything else. (And in full disclosure, I also fell in love and am writing a book so… I’ll call y’all back.) I’m less in touch with my friends but our actual connection time is just as deep, revealing, and fun. I also gave up being pissed off at certain people for things they’ve been doing for years and decided, “meh, just love ‘er.” Simple.

With all of this simplifying and cleansing, I feel an Inner Peace is starting to reveal itself (which, BTW, is the October theme for the Heart Centered Membership). The peace is always there. It’s a virtue of the heart. We just bury it under to-do lists and ambition.

SPIRITUAL PRACTICE
I decided to simplify my practices and my near constant seeking. I’ve been wrestling and relaxing with my spiritual search for… lifetimes. It’s tiring.

What I’m discovering is that spirituality is a practice of simplifying all forms of clutter and noise so that you can be with what arises.

I decided to focus on ONE particular meditation practice for 21 days. Then on Day 21, I re-committed to a full three months of the same daily visualization. This has been such a beautiful experience of becoming more intimate with myself and Creation. Some days, I dial it in by rote. Other days, my heart is aflame with seeing some new dimension of courage or love within me… and the universe.

(I’m doing the Golden Blue Chalice Meditation, BTW. If it calls to you, please come into the Heart Centered Membership. We have a few practices that are kept within the community for energetic containment—keeps the “containers” of the practices clean. I produced all of the meditations in Heart Centered and for the public, with an energy healer, V.S., who has been creating the practices for us for about five years.)

I have all but stopped reading new self help content. I can’t under-state the significance of this. After years of conceptualizing that “the light is within”, I’m putting that theory to the test. Knowledge accumulation is a habit of the ego mind. Wisdom has nothing to do with methodologies or philosophy. Wisdom is a virtue. And all I need to do is make room for that light to stream into me. It’s not in another theory. It’s in my own heart centered.

This sounds like an easy simplification, but it’s actually been the most challenging––and nourishing. If I stop seeking will I lose divine favour? Will my wit or willpower atrophy? So far I’ve only become softer and more compassionate with myself and others. Fewer opinions to uphold means more space in heart, my living room and my life.

Of course, the upheaval in the world reaches into my personal life and I have to keep choosing ways to keep my life simple. I know enough to know that my inner chaos is reflected in the outer world. And as I let go of all forms of clutter and noise… I am being with what arises.

Lighten your load and you’ll see what matters most.

Work less to buy stuff to impress people that haven’t yet considered loving you unconditionally.

Live lightly on the land that keeps us alive.

Simplify to deepen.

With Love,
