Maine doesn't have a lot of wide open country, at least in southern part. But I love open spaces. When we visit Texas and drive to any bit of elevation you can see for miles. This barn has that vibe and a lone cat sits in the shade watching the horizon.

Painting on wood panels is not new to me but not familiar. When I did this one there was joy to sliding the paint around and a fluid quality to the lines. So I stopped working on it before I ruined that feel to it.

ANNIE'S GARDEN Sold

Sometimes what I plan to paint just ends up to be a struggle. Then I give up and move on but use what is painted so far. That's how this one came to be. I like the softness of the colors and the flighty shapes.

This is loosely based on a barn that used to stand on Route 136. It's been long gone. The house that had been attached is also gone. The little milk room building is also gone. Without a use for a barn, they fall into disrepair quickly and sadly so many are gone.

LITTLE PEOPLE

This was a canvas with some stretcher marks on it so I decided I would do mixed media on it and give myself carte blanche to play on it. The first layer was placing a lot of random collage on it and then I played with some acrylic paints and ink. Then for the final stage I used oil paint to define shapes. It really was fun and I love this piece. It has lots of little hidden images to explore. Here's a few closeups.

HOT DAY

Sometimes giving my paintings a title is so difficult. This one makes me think of those hot summer days when you need your sunglasses before stepping out the door. I painted this one on a cradled wood panel which is so different than canvas but I'm happy with the result.

In my exploration of collage and mixed media I did this small one and considered it complete. But it got stacked face to face with another collage piece and a corner of this stuck and tore off. So I revisited it as I do with many older paintings. The recurring botanical theme reappears. The turtles remain. I think it's okay.

Sometimes I do smaller paintings which are a challenge for some odd reason. This 10x10" took several sessions to get to this point. Not a favorite but I gave it a shot.

MAINE PALM TREES

Maine's climate doesn't allow for real palm trees but sumac plants looks like palm trees to me. Their fall colors are so beautiful. There's a reason they grow in groves. The ropey roots can travel underground and spread quickly and far given the chance. Believe me, I thought I could grow just one once.

Experience is a useful thing. When I first started painting and creating artwork panic would set in when something went sideways. Now I know lemonade CAN be made from lemons. This originally was just an abstract, very green collage piece with no direction. Botanical themes are my default when I rework a piece. In this one I maintained most of the green and found areas that made for fun shapes of interest. I'm pretty happy how this one worked out.

It's not yet tulip time in our world but some have peeked through the ground. Spring bulbs give me so much joy after a long colorless winter. This one was an experiment with collage, cold wax, etc. on a wood panel. It seems like a happy painting to me.

POPHAM BEACH (SEGUIN)

Maybe with the weather warming up in the next couple of days we'll start thinking about beach days. Popham Beach is a favorite for many people but a few major storms altered its shape and Morse River now takes a sharp turn and flows parallel to the beach. The dunes have been eroded shrinking the beach. Maybe someday another storm will adjust back to its former glory.

STUDIO CHAOS

I haven't added gesso to the pre-gesso primed canvases I've bought over the years. But long story, I'm doing it now. It's a lot of work involved with doing 3 or 4 layers. Thankfully I was able to claim this space recently which gives me a place to work on several at once. This space seemed so big but it got filled in quickly with inventory that was stored elsewhere. Then I decided to play with collage and acrylics and then the paper collection happened. I'm not a hoarder but it looks like I have potential to be one. Oil painting happens elsewhere in the house and is very orderly given the limited space.

There's a stash of "craft stuff" for the grandkids but I'm not sure they're still interested.

One end of the table holds my acrylics and mediums. I find acrylics way more messy than oil painting. They are very challenging to me to get the right color and the quick drying time is off putting sometimes.

My collection of collage papers which are sorted other than the pile that's accumulated in the last few months. Never enough room!

Geraniums seem like very old-fashioned flowers to me. The nice thing about them is they can winter over in the basement and bloom again come warmer weather. But certain varieties seem messy and constantly shed petals. My neighbor has this one and others on her farm porch every summer. I love the look of them. So traditional.

Cats are wonderful creatures and a good cat makes for a good companion. But they can be ruthless killers out in the wild (the back yard.) Barn cats are valued for their help in keeping the rodent population down. We no longer have cats so I feed the birds freely now and their greatest danger is from hawks.

This was a one room schoolhouse near us that was torn down recently. I daydreamed that I could own it and turn it into a studio. Not that it was a practical or viable idea but fun to think about. This January really has felt like this cold and snowy scene. Winter blues.

Winter started very early and very cold this season. Snow comes in regular intervals and the sun is intermittent. So painting gardens with lots of color gives me a little relief.

GARDEN JUNGLE

Painting without a reference is always so different than say painting a barn, lighthouse or portrait. In my large inventory there are a lot of duds which make for this type of painting where painting over them leads me down the garden path. It seems to be the default that I go to. Creating these kinds of gardens leave me in control. The ones in our yard do what they want in spite of all my efforts.

GO FOR THE GOLD

Happy New Year! This past year I painted over a number of older paintings. Some with major changes and some staying with the same theme. This one was over a garden scene but the colors changed quite a bit. I haven't painted on cotton for years and found it disagreeable. So here's another makeover from 2025. Also I start thinking about studio clean up every January. I would like to shift the small paintings of 6x6, 8x8, 8x10 and 10x12 sizes. If any of those appeal to you please make an offer. I've increased my pricing for the larger paintings but am always open to offers.

PEGGY'S COVE LIGHTHOUSE

Some family recently visited Nova Scotia and stopped in at Peggy's Cove. I loved the photos they had of the lighthouse so had to paint this famous landmark. This concrete lighthouse was built in 1914 to replace the original one built in 1868. It's situated in a place where rogue waves can sweep folks off the rocks.

I'm not sure why, but the smaller canvases feel claustrophobic to paint. Like there's not enough elbow space. This 10x10" actually took me a fair amount of time. But now that it's done I'm ready to try some others.

Winter has come early to Maine with below normal temps and snow. Last night our area got 7 inches of snow. Summer and fall were warmer than usual so maybe this is payback so that we don't get too soft.
